RM3b master account claim under MACC scrutiny

GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is studying reports lodged against Anwar Ibrahim, claiming he had control over 20 statutory accounts worth RM3 billion.

MACC chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed, however, declined to comment further on the issue when met by reporters after attending a roundtable presentation and discussion on the national key result area (NKRA) on prevention of corruption, with foreign investors, here today.

He was asked to comment on the statement by Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali who wanted to know the status of the MACC's investigation into a claim allegedly made by former Bank Negara assistant governor Abdul Murad Khalid.

"Whatever complaint that has elements of corruption, we can investigate, regardless of who made the complaint and who were being implicated. But I cannot say anything more because I am bound by MACC's policy to refrain from divulging information on the investigation," he said.

Murad had allegedly claimed that Anwar, as finance minister in the 1990s, controlled 20 master accounts involving assets, shares and funds worth more than RM3 billion.

Meanwhile, Abu Kassim said MACC would open an investigation paper on PKR deputy president Azmin Ali if it receives new evidence on claims that he had assets amounting to more than RM30 million.

BN's kiss of death

by Dean Johns | Malaysiakini

Of the dozens of comments on Malaysiakini's story on the appearance of Najib Abdul Razak's picture on the 100Plus can, the most telling I saw was from someone writing as 'Patchen': "Can you imagine putting your lips on Najib's face as you drink?…It's like kissing him…!"

Like Patchen and seemingly almost everyone else, I  have been racking my brains to think why F&N (Fraser & Neave) would defile one of its most popular brands with pictures of Najib.

Was it a 'clever' marketing concept gone horribly wrong? Or the company's misguided attempt to get itself back into BN's good books after Ambiga Sreenivasan committed the unforgiveable sin of kindly offering 100Plus to anti-BERSIH protesters outside her house?

Or was F&N's use of Najib's picture on the can of one of their most popular brands in response to a Mafia-style BN "offer that they couldn't refuse"? Whichever, it certainly served to highlight the increasingly evident fact that, to multitudes of Malaysians, Najib, his BN accomplices, and all their works and words are the absolute kiss of death.

Terminal blight

They have even managed to terminally blight their own 1Malaysia brand by making it a by-word for suspect, shoddy or otherwise undesirable products and services foisted on an unsuspecting public by crony suppliers.

1Malaysia shops notoriously sold, and perhaps still sell, a whole range of illegally-labelled goods, many of them no more cheaply than the genuine articles available elsewhere.

And they even stooped so low as to cheat mothers and children by selling so-called "growing-up" milk powder completely devoid of essential vitamins and minerals.

The 1Malaysia email service was launched as a "free" link for citizens with the government and its agencies, yet outrageously paid the crony operators of this "service", and may do so still as far as I know, 50 sen of public money for every message subscribers sent.

As for the BR1Malaysia "gift" of RM500 to every needy Malaysian, there's been no accounting or auditing that I've seen, and so I assume at least some of those responsible for dispensing the cash kept a good deal of it for themselves in the notorious "I help you, you help me" spirit of 1Malaysia.

And recently we saw the launch of the 1Malaysia tablet, which was greeted by those claiming far more IT expertise than I have to be both under-performing and overpriced.

But surely the most insulting offering to date has been the book Menyerlalahkan Amalan Nilai-Nilai Murni 1Malaysia(Highlighting 1Malaysia's values), which was launched by Information Minister Rais Yatim as an ideal gift for supporters of BERSIH.

With a cover prominently featuring Najib Razak pressing the flesh with a member of his adoring public, this sickening exercise in hypocrisy proposes 21 "moral values" including patience, discipline, respect, meritocracy, cleanliness, education, integrity, humility, courtesy and loyalty.

Thus vividly highlighting the fact that the BN 1Malaysia gang practices none of the virtues to which it pays lip-service, and clearly has no intention of ever doing so.

Indeed, it can't manage a morsel of morality even when its activities almost literally result in the kiss of death, as in the disgracefully-disorganised drag-race at its so-called "Millions of Youths" gathering in Putrajaya last month.

The Sports Minister had the extraordinary cheek to claim that there were "no grounds for the government to apologise" to the families of seven young people seriously injured when a car ran off the inadequately barriered track.

In fact he went so far as to claim that "the victims' families understood that (had) their children not been there, they would have gone somewhere else and faced other mishaps," and thus they "have foregone suing the government as had been urged by certain quarters."

Catastrophic crash

I wonder if the Minister for Transport (MCA-BN) will be so callous and cavalier in his attitude to victims and their families if and when the allegedly defective 1Malaysia regime air traffic control radar upgrade results in a catastrophic crash.

Of course there's always the chance he wouldn't even notice, as these days he seems to be devoting most of his attention to trying to stifle public anger aroused by the antics of the lying Health Minister (MCA_BN) Low Tiong Lai over his alleged bid for a WWW number plate

And the Malaysian public would be shielded from any bad news about the 1Malaysia brand and its promoters, as usual, by the 1Malaysia "news" media, largely owned as they are by BN and its crony "communications" corporation, Media Prima.

But to judge by the sinking circulations of most of its so-called "newspapers" and the pathetic content, on-air-personalities and production values of its television stations, Media Prima appears to be succumbing to the 1Malaysia kiss of death too.

Though not as quickly, unfortunately, as many of us would like. Elsewhere the process appears to be speeding-up, however, with virtually instant calls for a boycott of 100Plus following the appearance of the number 1 promoter of 1Malaysia on its can.

So, considering the visceral revulsion of Patchen and countless others at the thought of pressing their lips to a lMalaysia-polluted drink can, I hope has plans for lots more crony-enriching 1Malaysia scams posing as products and services.

The opportunities are endless. From foodstuffs, or rather stuff-ups like 1Malaysia beef from the National Feedlot Corporation to a range of sub-standard 1Malaysia cosmetics featuring lipsticks with a picture of a pouting Najib Razak on their packs.

We can't look forward to a 1Malaysia car, unfortunately, as the country is already stuck with the 1Mahathir Proton. But the Najib Razak administration has already floated the prospect of as 1Malaysia nuclear power.

And if that comes to pass, and proves as much of a combined rip-off and stuff-up as most other BN projects, it could prove the kiss of death for millions of citizens.

Though by then there would likely be a chain of 1Malaysia undertakers, so surviving BN politicians and cronies could still go on making a killing.

Mengapa tiada tindakan ke atas Musa Aman?

KENYATAAN MEDIA
14 Jun 2012

Jeffrey hopes Pairin won’t defend seat

KOTA KINABALU: Political maverick Dr Jeffrey Kitingan is fervently hoping that his brother Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin will not seek to defend his seat in the 13th general election.

"He's my brother but this is not about family, it's about politics. The ground swells for change.

"As much as I wish not to stand, I must do so now," he said explaining his decision to contest in Keningau, where Pairin is incumbent.

Jeffrey believes that this time round he is on firmer grounds.

Following his defeat in the 2008 general election against Pairin in the Keningau parliamentary constituency, Jeffrey had decided to stay out of the political race.

But the political landscape in the country and in Sabah has changed since the 2008 tsunami.

Jeffrey himself is now seen as a beacon of change amongst the younger Kadazan Dusun and Murut community with whom his Borneo Agenda resonates well.

Jeffrey helms the Sabah chapter of the State Reform Party (STAR) ,an opposition group which is pushing for the reinstatement of the terms of the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

Since its launch six months ago, the party has chalked a membership of 165,000 people, 60% of whom are below 45-years-old. The bulk this group comprise educated and professional youths.

Asked if Pairin is supportive of his party and Borneo Agenda, Jefffey said: 'I don't know… but he once told me 'buat yang terbaik' when I thanked him for letting us use the KDCA (Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association) hall for the STAR launch.

Jeffrey's a visionary

In the coming election STAR has said that it will contest in all 60 state seats and 25 parliamentary constituency. Whether or not this pledge materialises is left to be seen

But for Jeffrey himself, it will be a return to Keningau, where his brother holds court as the Huguan Siou (paramount leader).

Pairin is the MP for Keningau and the state assemblyman for nearby Tambunan constituency.

"I will contest in Keningau again.  I'm hoping he (Pairin) will not go for the seat anymore.

"He (Pairin) has served the constituency for 30 years," Jeffrey said who is also planning to contest the state seat of Bingkor.

In the last election, Jeffrey lost the seat in a four-cornered fight. He lost the seat to BN's Justine Guka by 171 votes.

A Harvard graduate, Jeffrey remains an enigma to many. His political history is littered with shifts and jumps.

He was formerly a member of  his brother's Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS). Then he moved to Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS).

Unhappy here, he later joined Parti Angkatan Keadilan Rakyat (Akar Bersatu) and eventually settled with United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko).

But this too did not last as he joined Anwar Ibrahim's PKR and was later appointed as party's vice-president until his resignation in October 2009 over differences with the leadership.

But looking at Jeffrey's growing legion of supporters, it appears that he may have the support of the people in Sabah.

Said STAR youth chief Hasmin Azroy, a teacher: "Dr Jeffrey is a visionary. We are educated, we understand his thoughts and his ideas for Sabah.

"Our job now is to educate the people about the Malaysia Agreement and the 20-points. The people must know this first.  The winning will eventaully come, " he said.

"Maka dia kena buat penjelasanlah. Apa pula saya? Saya cuma quote sahaja, kenapa pula saya kena dedah (akaun)?

"Saya punya duit apa (sangat) yang ada," kata Muhyiddin kepada pemberita selepas majlis lawatan kerjanya di Sungai Besi petang tadi.- malaysiakini

Tuduhan Anwar sorok RM3b tidak berasas – Bekas Pengarah Siasatan BPR

Muhyiddin: I won't show Anwar my accounts...

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has snubbed a challenge posed by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to disclose all his bank accounts for public scrutiny, saying that he has! nothing to do with the issue.

Responding to Anwar's call last week for him to disclose his accounts, and then Anwar would follow suit, Muhyiddin said he was not the character who is accused of amassing RM3 billion cash, assets and funds in his accounts and thus should not be subjected to such a challenge.

He said he was merely commenting on the issue when a reporter asked him.

"(Anwar) is being accused, not me. It has nothing to do with me, why should I disclose my accounts?" he said at a press conference in Sungai Besi today.

"I don't have that kind of money," he added.

Meanwhile, he downplayed PKR's assertion that the opposition will be able to win 110 seats based on a survey recently.

"Maybe they are conducting a psychological war, so that people will feel like they are supporting the winning side.

"They declare to the public that they can win, in order to garner support," he said.

Muhyiddin added that BN understands its strengths and weaknesses and will not be frightened by such surveys.

"They can have their survey, we can also have ours," he said. - malaysiakini

Syamsul Azhaari - Apasal nk kena jawap...kes ni dh ditutup. Isu ini bermula apabila No 2 terikut2 rentak satu NGO bodoh persoalkn dakwaan miliki 3b. Kn isu ni dh ditutup oleh BPR.13 tahun lalu...maka sebagai TPM..dia tak sepatutnye persoalkn kredibiliti Agensi berikut...dia sepatutnye dudok diam je..sekarang Anuar cabar dia...kita sama2 tunjuk akaun...terus kecut....apalah...

Hermitic - Those living in glass houses do not throw stones at others. If one does not have enough ammunition, don't try to shoot at others. If you have nothing to hide, just ope! n up wit hout any fear.

Noriman Saari - kalau mcm tu baik diam saja..jgn la msuk campur..lebih baik cakap ' saya tiada komen' ini nak komen jugak..na suruh org buat itu ini...tapi sendiri tak berani buat...kalau telus apa salahnya....DUN pas kena dedah harta...anwar kena jawab account, kalau BN, x ble dedah harta...nanti BAHAYA...

Anonymous #15167679 - If you have nothing to fear why takut to declare? As a DPM u should not comment on something based on heresay!! u must have at least some basic standard but in this case u blew yourself up! No standard and worst still anything DSAI u all BN go stupid. I just pray that the all mighty will punish those whose niat is bad, including me if l m wrong.

Kiro Hmd - "kalau sayia punya duit apa (sangat) yang ada" Dedahkanlah wahai TPM...Kasi malu sikit sama DSAI tuuuu....biar padam muka dia...TPM tunjukkan bukti yang TPM ni amalkan wasatiyyah seperti yang PM dok laungkan....ermmm tapi ada BERANI ker TPM Malaysia niii....ada teloq tadaq teloq, ada teloq takdaq teloq....entahlahhh

NX - With regard to Anwars account, you DPM has no bloody business to comment on it. Since you tunjuk berani nak comment, now show us your accounts. Guess you dont have the balls just like your PM. All Menteri Umno dont have balls because everyone of you is a thief.

Roll Royce - TPM yg cukup bangang. Kalau kita tuduh org, adalah tangjwb yg menuduh utk membuktikannya bukan sebaliknya wahai TPM yg entah2 apa. Kalau kata2 tu dr pak begong kedai kopi, org tak ambi pot.

Anonymous_3ff5 - DPM started it all by telling DSAI to explain on the the 20 accounts to which ACA/SPRM investigation already cleared and close case. DPM should accept DSAI's challenge if he has nothing to hide. But instead he blamed the reporter for asking him to comment on the issue. It only prove how irresponsible for him as DPM to blame the reporter when at best he can respond as "no comment" just as when asked to respond on the scopene case.

akuna matata - Come on DPM, take the challenge and declare your bank accounts...

cheers.

Irshad Manji. What is in her books? Is our faith so fragile?

Irshad Manji in KL for her book launch - Photograph: irshadmanji.com

As Manji rightly says, God's post is already filled and there is no vacancy. So let's stop playing God, reiterates Sarajun Hoda Abdul Hassan.

Irshad Manji, a Ugandan-born Canadian author who claims she is a faithful Muslim, was in Malaysia recently to launch 'Allah, kebebasan dan cinta', the Malay translation of her book 'Allah, liberty and love'. But the Malaysian authorities banned it under section 7 subsection 1 of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, on the grounds that it contravenes the teachings of the Qur'an and Hadith.

This is her second book banned here. The earlier book 'The trouble with Islam', later renamed 'The trouble with Islam today', was banned in 2009. Malaysia sees her as a threat to Islam.

The world sees Manji as a Muslim reformist, a celebrated professor from New York University – but to Jakim, the Islamic authority in Malaysia, because she is an LGBT activist, she is a deviant. Hence her books must be banned. She is also wickedly being blamed for trying to reform Islam when what she is doing is only to reform the understanding about the religion. And those who strive in our paths to find us (God) – we will certainly guide them to our paths: For verily God is with those who do right (Qur'an 29:69).

This is because Qur'anic teachings are grossly misinterpreted to justify terrorism, human rights abuses against women, injustices, grave worship and honour killings, just to give a few examples. Verses from the Qur'an are cherry picked, taken out of context, sometimes partially and most times given their own meaning. If Islam is really a religion of peace, then where are these abuses coming from? Why then are these damaging beliefs still followed with total conviction in almost all pockets of the Muslim milieu? How can murky water come from a clear well? Who is misleading them? Why is it necessary to correct the wrongs?

Qur'an 13:11 – God does not change the condition of any people unless they change themselves. Unfortunately, countries with sizeable Muslim populations that give power or politic! al clout to the clergy – see Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Sudan, Yemen and many more – are the very places where you find the most horrific abuses to the rights to dignity, honour, life, freedom, respect and justice. These abuses are atrociously committed by Muslims against other Muslims. Mind you, these countries are also signatories to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It cannot be a coincidence. Can it? Can it be Islamic teaching?

Islam cannot be blamed for evil and discriminatory practices by Muslims who blindly follow skewed interpretations of the faith. Truly God commands you to give back trust to those to whom they are due, and when you judge between people, to judge with justice… (Qur'an 4:58); …. And act justly. Truly, God loves those who are just (Qur'an 49:9); …And let not the hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just, that is nearer to piety … (Qur'an 5:8).

Jakim's attitude towards Manji's books is dreadfully mystifying. If Manji and Jakim are both proponents of Islam and believe in the Qur'an, how is it then possible that these two believers cannot with maturity reconcile their diverse views? Why can't they both be right? I mean even coins have two sides. The believers are nothing else than brothers (in Islam). So make reconciliation between your brothers and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy (Qur'an 49:10). In the event, it was Jakim that unwisely shunned engaging her.

Ijtihad – intellectual reasoning

Manjii is known to be always on the lookout to engage people for healthy intellectual discourses, even with those who oppose her faith. That's why in choosing to revive the traditions of intellectual reasoning, ijtihad, she prefers to talk to those in higher education institutions all over the world, not the unassuming illiterate villagers. But on this soil, Malaysian authorities had to canc! el her programmes both at the Islamic and Monash Universities and ban her books without seeing the need to justify their actions to the believers.

Contrary to the concept of taqlid – copying or obeying blindly, ijtihad is a concept promoting debates that helps reconcile faith with the teachings, disciplines, beliefs, traditions and practices of followers of the Islamic faith. It is a science promoted in the Qur'an but disastrously abandoned by Muslims on the wrong advice of the clergy, who took it upon themselves to abrogate the thinking faculty of the Muslims. Did Allah mention anywhere in the Qur'an that ulamas need to teach his religion or speak for him?

In the Qur'an verse 3:7, Allah says, he has sent this scripture very simple, for everyone to understand and follow … no one knows the correct interpretation except him … only those who posses intelligence will take heed. Does that mean one cannot question in order to seek truth? Furthermore, Allah proclaims, "their affairs are decided by consensus among them" (Qur'an 42:38). This development is only possible through freedom of scholarly research, the acceptance of different expressions and views, and the active appreciation and conciliation of diverse views of the learned, scholars and thinkers. Then should Islamic authorities outrightly reject the different interpretations from people within the same faith?

Only with constant and continuous ijtihad can any Muslim stay firmly committed to the teachings of Islam. The Qur'an, chapter 17, verse 36 says: Do not accept anything that you yourself cannot ascertain. You are given hearing, the eyes and the intelligence (mind), in order to examine and verify. Failure to verify and follow blindly, will lead them to hell (Qur'an 14:21), and Those who listen to all the views and follow the best are the ones guided by God, these are the ones that possess intelligence (Qur'an 39:18). Are these Quranic ! verses f oreign to Jakim?

Hence, why did Jakim so arrogantly think it better for the Home Ministry to ban her books and cancel all her local engagements instead of sensibly inviting Irshad Manji for a dialogue that would have allowed her to present her point of view and engage in healthy discussion as directed by the Qur'an? Are our 'jaguh kampong' intellectuals not 'man' enough and do they not have the stomach to face her? Or were they simply cowed with fear that their lack of intellectual capacity would be exposed?

Insecurity

Jakim insists that her book contains elements that will confuse and deviate Muslims from their faith and that her writings insult Islam. Fair. How can these claims be proved? Or are they above God's laws that it isn't obligatory for them to justify their actions? Did they at least read her book before judging her? When the announcement of the ban was first made in the mainstream newspapers, it was also reported that a copy of the book was sent to Jakim to study – meaning they opted for the ban simply because of complaints from certain quarters, even before exploring the book. Simply out of insecurity, our religious champions just automatically went into a defensive overdrive mode?

Why do we Muslims feel so insecure? Is our Islamic faith so fragile that it cannot stand scientific and intellectual analysis and examination? That would be a shame. Let's say freedom of speech and expression is not divine and that it comes with responsibilities. Let's also say, Jakim is right in finding that Manji's book is indeed damaging to the Islamic faith. Then shouldn't Jakim first come up with the quotations or passages from the book that it deems to be offensive and misleading and would deviate Muslims in this country; shouldn't Jakim put these passages forward to the people to judge for themselves?

In the spirit of Qur'an 17:36, the people have to decide for themselves. The people would want! to hear Jakim's side of the story and their arguments but before anything is proven why must our authorities jump the gun and ban Manji's book banned. Regimes that thought they could genuinely control people's minds, thought and expression anywhere around the world failed miserably.

Anyone who does not agree with Manji's opinion has a choice not to read her book or throw it away the moment they find the book is deviating from the teachings of the Qur'an. But when and to whom did Allah ever grant the right to decide what is true about Islam and which is the only opinion that we must statutorily believe and follow? Is Islam really about policing morality? Banning on the basis that one particular teaching is deviating from one's own belief is playing God.

There are so many books of other faiths available on the bookshelves and on the internet – do we then ban them all, fearing they might fall into Muslim hands? Manji's book can still be downloaded free from her website. Surely inquisitive Malaysians with a God-given thinking faculty and a mind of their own will still get to read her opinion. This is a free world. Why should one think and decide for others?

There are thousands of different Islamic sects around the world, all claiming support from oral traditions that overrule the written laws of the Qur'an. Malaysia officially follows only one. How do we make sure we are definitely on the right track? And that such representation actually receives God's sanction. Blind followers should be reminded … the devil on judgment day will say, "Don't blame me, God gave you the truth, I just invited you, who asked you to follow me?" (Qur'an 14:22).

Enlightenment: Accepting differences

It is an internationally known fact that Manji is a Muslim and she is not talking about reforming Islam but reforming how we actually understand and interpret the faith, more so in changed circumstances. She talks about ijtihad, the return of enlightenment, the very glory of Islam and the rich diversities that actually unite the people of the Muslim faith. We also know dogmas and ideologies can never be static. They adopt and assume current manifestations. Isn't that why God gave humans brains and Allah says think and scrutinise, not just accept what is thrown at you? (Note: Which explains why the beginning of the Qur'an starts with the verse, Iqra' [read]).

What's wrong with how we interpret our faith? Look at how Muslim societies have broken down, how women are treated and how pagan teachings that Prophet Mohamed spent his live to repel, later after his death crept back in the name of 'sunnahs' riding on the back of fake hadiths. We find very many beliefs and practices, believed to be from the religion, are actually recycled traditions of the local tribals and pagan rituals that were picked up along the path that the Islamic faith passed – the very practices that Prophet Mohamed himself (as were many other messengers of Allah) was sent to correct.

It is certainly a tragedy today – and not uncommon – to find one Islamic cleric calling another cleric 'infidel' on the basis of the slightest difference in opinion or interpretation. Questioning or disobedience can invite death. Honour killings in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and in the Arab and African states that have sizeable Muslim populations prove this point. Here, Muslims are guided purely by mullahs not by reading and understanding the Qur'an themselves.

Differences in the early Islamic period were tolerated. Otherwise, how could we have so many sects called 'mazahabs'? This renaissance period of glory was the catalyst that led Muslims to invent so many theories in the arts and sciences. When the difference of opinion stopped being tolerated, when the concept of ijtihad was thrown out of the window, Islam stopped growing in quality and its glory has b! een tumb ling ever since.

Today, we may have a bigger Muslim population but it is hollow in substance. We lost our excellence in science , astronomy, medicine, mathematics etc to those who took over and further worked on them to produce countless discoveries and inventions. Muslim minds froze because indulgence in critical thinking as encouraged by the Qur'an was prohibited all together.

In an immediate response, Manji said she was very disappointed and added "censorship treats citizens like children and denies human beings to think for themselves". The Qur'an actually, she claims rightly, advocates the use of the heart and mind in forming opinions.

Does Islam really prohibit differences in opinions? Does Islam really prohibit engaging in intellectual discourses? The pagan followers in seventh century Mecca ordered that nobody should talk to Prophet Mohamed, saying he was a dangerous man, that he brought strange teachings that insulted their gods and called for him to be pelted with stones. Those in authority are now quite fond of repeating these same words.

Taking a leaf from history, when Prophet Mohamed first decided to lead an entourage to go to Mecca for Haj from Medina, he was stopped at a place called Hudaibiyah. He was not allowed to enter Mecca because he was propagating a teaching that would deviate and confuse them. In subsequent negotiations, Prophet Mohamed pleaded that it was all right to have a difference in faith, that there was no compulsion and that they should not prevent him from engaging and communicating with the Meccans. Being able to communicate and engage with the people was a victory for Prophet Mohamed which changed the Islamic landscape for good.

No vacancy

Isn't it better to teach, train and empower Malaysians to think right? For example we can make all the laws to punish theft, but isn't it better to help people think and feel that stealing is sinful and wrong? If we cannot make them feel! the gui lt, you punish the thief today, tomorrow he will steal again. Similarly if Jakim really does its work effectively, more Muslims will know better what is right and what is wrong in understanding the finer intricacies of Islam. But in a world where it is increasingly 'open skies' and borderless, how can people's thinking be restricted? People instead should be taught how to make better judgements for themselves, both for the sake of themselves and for upholding the sanctity of their faith.

We can stop Manji from coming to Malaysia but we cannot stop people from going to Manji. We should talk about what we can agree and move forward. If indeed she is a lesbian, it was God that created her as such and let's leave it to Allah to do his job. She even says, you don't have to follow her.

Finally, as Manji rightly says, God's post is already filled and there is no vacancy. So let's stop playing God. Nobody is asking us to believe her, but think for ourselves and thank you, we do not need others to think for us. If there are books by Manji, how could they have been published if it wasn't God's will? The wisdom lies in reading them and all other similar books that challenge out convictions; then we decide. Not decide first and shun. After all, if we are sure about our faith, why do we worry that others will deviate us. Allah hates people who do not scrutinise.

Explain ‘no-action’ on boxer’s case, AG told

PETALING JAYA: DAP leader Gobind Singh wants Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail to explain the lack of action on the part of the police to investigate the case of a national boxer who was assaulted by a group of people.

The Puchong MP demanded an explanation within the next 48 hours.

"I call upon the AG to explain why no action has been taken against anyone up until now despite the serious nature of the allegations made in the police report.

"As a MP, I demand that the AG respond within the time stated, failing which I will move a motion against him in Parliament next week in respect of this matter," he said.

Gobind was commenting on the case of national boxer Mohd Farkhan Mohd Haron who was assaulted on May 6.

Reports claimed that a member of the Johor royalty was involved in the fracas.

Gobind said Farkhan's case should be investigated since there were various provisions such as Sections 326, 307, 362 and 506 of the Penal Code which provide for investigations into assault.

The lawyer added that no investigation was conducted even though a police report on the assault was lodged on May 21.

Gerakan asks Penang to junk its building guidelines

GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan today urged the Penang government to discard the real estate development guidelines it currently uses and replace them with a comprehensive set that protects the rights and interests of local residents.

"The current guidelines are affecting locals adversely," said Teh Leong Meng, who heads Penang Gerakan's local government bureau.

Speaking at a press conference here, he said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's administration should consult the local public before drafting the new guidelines.

In the meantime, he added, the construction of high rise buildings should stop.

Teh alleged that the guidelines that the Pakatan government adopted in June 2010 allowed high rise buildings "everywhere in the state without any control" and were among the chief reasons for the mushrooming of posh condominiums and apartments, which in turn had caused house prices in the state to skyrocket.

"Ordinary people cannot afford to buy homes in Penang today," he said.

The "uncontrolled" development, he added, had also worsened traffic congestion and resulted in the destruction of hilly areas and degradation of the living environment.

He said the Pakatan guidelines allowed the density of high rise buildings to increase from 30 units per acre to 87 units and, in the case of low-cost houses, to 120 units.

"Height has increased three to four times from eight-storey to 32-storey buildings."

He said the people of Penang cherished the natural beauty of their state and would not want to live in a crowded concrete jungle like Hong Kong, where "we can't even see the sky".

He criticised the state government for failing to upgrade roads and improve the traffic dispersal system and public transport services to accommodate the surge in population due to "unscrupulous" construction of high rise buildings.

MPs query PAC delay to probe cases

KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Rakyat MPs called upon the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Azmi Khalid to call for meetings soon in order to probe several high profile cases.

Speaking at the press conference today, Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said that PAC had not called for meeting since mid-March despite Azmi's earlier promise to probe several high profile cases.

"Is it a bid to cover up the financial scandals as the general election may be called anytime? This shows that there is a hidden hand trying to cover up the investgations," claimed Pua.

Also present were Tumpat MP Kamaruddin Jaafar, Kepong MP Tan Seng Giow, Teluk Kemang MP Kamarul Bahrin Abas and Selayang MP William Leong.

Besides the NFCorp scandal, PAC was poised to investigate three other issues: former MAS managing director Tajuddin Ramli's RM589 million debt write-off; 1Malaysia Development Board's investment in PetroSaudi; and the KLIA 2 cost increase from RM1.7 billion to RM3.9 billion.

Kamaruddin said that he met Azmi on Monday to enquire of the meetings but received a non-committal answer.

"The PAC committee lasts for an entire Parliamentary term and it can be called anytime," said Kamaruddin.

Tan, who is also PAC deputy chairman, said that this was the reason the opposition bloc had always asked the government to appoint a Pakatan MP as the committee chairman to ensure transparency.

"We will be sending an official letter to Azmi soon," he said.

When met later, Azmi denied allegations that the there were hidden hands trying to halt PAC's probe on the high profile cases.

"No orders to stop PAC meetings," said the Padang Besar MP.

On why he did not call for meetings, Azmi said that he did call for a meeting in April but had to call it off claiming many of its members did not turn up.

He also said that he will call for a meeting next week but said he would only decide on the date after consulting the parliamentary secretary.

He fears not death but evil

PETALING JAYA: He does not fear death and will embrace when it comes knocking on his door. But until there is still life in him, he vows to battle evil from destroying this country that he loves.

The above is not an excerpt from the script of a new Hollywood superhero flick but the words of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

To his more harsher critics, the doctor-turned-politician is evil personified as his 22-years in office is riddled with allegations of corruption, conspiracies and abuse of power.

His long-time foe Lim Kit Siang claimed that Mahathir is anxious over the prospect of Pakatan Rakyat forming the next government as the hammer of justice would come down hard on him.

It is because of this, the DAP leader charged, the 84-year-old former premier is working overtime to ensure that the opposition bloc, led by his nemesis Anwar Ibrahim, does not come into power.

Mahathir retaliated in his trademark manner, saying that Lim would relish witnessing him being dragged to court or even sentenced to death.

"No doubt he is inspired by what happened to Gadaffi and Mubarak.

"He would love to see me dragged to the courts and sentenced to death or to at least a life sentence. Maybe like Gadaffi I would be murdered," he added in his blog.

However, Mahathir conceded being gripped with fear but for different reasons. Once again, without naming Anwar, the ex-premier trained his guns on his former heir.

"I am afraid of the kind of abuse of power that has already been shown by one of Pakatan' s great leaders who got a senior police officer to frighten Dr Ristina [Majid] and Ummi Hafilda into withdrawing Ummi's letter to me.

"I am afraid of the fabrication of charges so as to put me behind bars. That I am innocent would be irrelevant. What is important is Kit Siang's satisfaction at seeing me behind bars and more," he said.

Ironically, Anwar had accused Mahathir and his confidants of fabricating the sodomy charge against him in 1998 which eventually led to the former's dismissal from government.

'I have never abused power'

Apart from this, Mahathir wrote that he was not afraid since he had been careful not to abuse the power he possessed when being prime minister.

Since a Mahathir response would be incomplete without wit and sarcasm, the former premier, in claiming that his hands were clean, admitted eating some of the fruits given to him in order not to let them turn bad.

"I was mindful of having to step down and lose power at some stage. If I had abused power, my detractors would gleefully expose me and strive to put me behind bars," he added.

In fact, he said, certain quarters had tried this and since his retirement he had been questioned by the police and the AG's office several times.

"I was also made to appear before a tribunal to be questioned by all and sundry, including representatives of the Bar Council. So far nothing could be pinned on me," he added.

Mahathir said even now he is open to investigations as to whether he received illegal gratifications, detained people for personal reasons or benefited from the projects carried out during his tenure.

"I have not taken anything that is not mine. In fact all gifts given to me, many very valuable, have been given to the government including a score of expensive cars.

"They can be seen in Langkawi or at the old PM's house in KL. I must admit that I ate some of the fruits given to me to prevent them from going bad," he added.

Mahathir said he forbade his children from doing business with the government or to be candidates in elections though there were such offers when he was prime minister and president of Umno.

"Only after I stepped down did I allow Mukhriz to contest (in the general election)," he said.

The former premier also claimed that his current bank balance resulted from his savings as a government servant for three decades.

"My salaries were not big. But the government took care of my housing, water and electricity, my travels. I don't even spend much on food as I get invitations to functions like weddings etc. I was therefore able to save my pay and allowances," he said.

Except for his son Mirzan, Mahathir said that his other children did not receive scholarships.

"I believe Mirzan paid back what he owed MARA. He had the scholarship before I became a minister, in fact when I was expelled from Umno," he added.

As for owning shares, Mahathir said that he purchased 200 Malayan Tobacco shares long before he joined the government.

"Other shares are unit trusts issued by PNB and state governments which I was obliged to buy. I own shares in Mico pharmacy in Alor Star which I set up when I was a private practitioner.

"I am not interested in getting rich or living a life of luxury.

"What I have now is far more than what I had hoped for when I was dreaming as a student. I am grateful to Allah for what I have and for sparing me to live this long," he added.

Mahathir also said that he was prepared to depart "when the time comes" and was aware that his possessions would not accompany him to the grave.

"But for as long as I can, I would work hard to prevent evil people and crooks from destroying this country that I love," he added.

'I don't wish to see him jailed'

Meanwhile, Lim said he had no desire to see Mahathir incarcerated but added that he must not block full investigations into the host of financial and political scandals during his term.

In his blog, the veteran DAP politician wrote that it was "unworthy and dishonourable" of Mahathir to accuse him of possessing such a macabre intention.

"I do not know whether Mahathir is becoming a victim of a very fevered imagination, to the extent that he could imagine and blog that I would want him to end up like Gadaffi or Mubarak.

"Nothing is furthest from my mind but I forgive Mahathir for these wild and preposterous imaginings," he added.

However, the DAP leader said Mahathir must answer for the infamous financial scandals under his watch and also how key national institutions were compromised and subverted to serve the behests of one man, the prime minister.

"Mahathir has claimed innocence to any abuse of power in his 22 years as prime minister. It is for him to prove his case to the nation, future generations and history," he added.

Full video of Pakatan MPs being enticed out soon

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS MP Khalid Samad said he would reveal the full video of an alleged attempt by 'Umno agents' to buy over Pakatan Rakyat MPs once the Parliament is dissolved.

As a teaser, Khalid showed an additonal five-minute clip showing the two agents attempting to strike a deal with a couple, said to be representatives of Pakatan MPs.

The agents claimed to have offered RM2 million to the MPs to jump ship and also offered government contracts as additional inducement.

One of the agent is said to be a former Kita leader from Kedah.

The former Kita leader is seen mentioning the name "Zahrain" in the conversation but it is not known if he was referring to Bayan Baru MP Zahrain Hashim.

Present by Khalid's side today were PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution and Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi.

Last week, Khalid showed reporters the first part of the video of the agents involved in buying over Pakatan MPs.

The clip is said to be part of a three-hour long video and was shot in 2010 at a restaurant in Klang Valley. It is said that most of the MPs targeted were from PKR.

The Shah Alam MP said that this was clear proof that taxpayers money were used to finance dirty politics.

"We knew Umno was doing it all the while but had no hard evidence. Now we have something solid and we will upload the clip on YouTbe soon," said Khalid.

Whether he would lodge a report with the MACC soon, Khalid said he would look into the matter

Saifuddin, on the other hand, said that it would an exercise in futility to report the matter to MACC claiming the latter would take no action.

"We reported a case to MACC of a former menteri besar trying ot buy over one of our state assemblyman but no action was taken," he said.

Since most targeted were from PKR, Saifuddin said the party had set up a comprehensive vetting system to ensure they field credible candidates in the general election.

"We've learnt our lesson and we are better prepared but as always there is not guarantee," he said.

Meanwhile, Zahrain said he had no knowledge of the meeting and said he never received any monetary reward when he left PKR in 2010.

"All I know is Pakatan is enticing BN MPs to join them, not otherwise," he said.

Dont worry, s/o Mohamed Kutty. I’ll be fair to you

Early this year, over dinner, a Pakatan leader said that many of them could not understand me.

"You don't want to contest in the elections. When you were offered a senatorship after the 12th GE you declined. So what do you want?", he asked.

"When we remove BN from Putrajaya, I would like the new AG to give me a fiat to prosecute Mahathir for all his wrongdoings. I have a legal team that is ready to do this without fee, and without fear and favour. That is all I want.", I replied.

Harakah reports that Kutty is worried that he will be wrongly jailed after Pakatan takes over Putrajaya.

Don't worry, Kutty.

I'm not interested in seeing you rot in jail. It would mean having to feed you and wasting more of the rakyat's money, what little that has been left by you.

No, we don't want that.

What we want is to get you to sing like a canary and divulge details of where you and your cronies have squirreled away the wealth of the nation.

And I know of just the trick to get you to sing.

Looking forward to our date, Kutty.

Sultan Johor murka terhadap Nizar

Sekitar Dun Johor

UMNO/APCO-BN PERMAINKAN HUDUD

Minimum wage for all workers

PUTRAJAYA: All workers, including contract workers, cleaners and gardeners are eligible to receive minimum wage.

Human Resources Ministry's human resources policy division secretary Kua Abun clarified this during a meeting with members from a NGO, Oppressed People's Network (Jerit), and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).

Earlier this morning Jerit and PSM held a demonstration involving 30 people. A closed door discussion with the ministry was then held for about an hour.

On May 1, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak announced that minimum wage was fixed at RM900 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM800 in Sabah and Sarawak.

It would be gazetted on July 1 and would come into effect in January 2013.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Jerit coordinator M Sivaranjani said: "The information department in the Human Resources Ministry had erred by stating that cleaners and contract workers are not eligible for minimum wage."

"Only domestic maids and those who are self employed are not eligible for minimum wage," she added.

She said that only companies which had less than five employees were allowed to implement the minimum wage system in July 2013.

"The list of those companies with less than five staff will be released next year," she added.

Sivaranjani also said that the government would assist companies that were unable to implement minimum wage.

In addition to that, she said that the ministry would be reviewing minimum wage every two years.

Sivaranjani said the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) was also guilty of issuing a circular which claimed that allowance were included in the minimum wage.

"The circular is invalid. Discussion between MEF and the Human Resources Ministry is ongoing.

"If there are employers implementing what is stated in the circular, complaints can be lodged against them at the labour department," she added.

Rais: We did not jam networks during Bersih

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's mobile phone networks are unable to handle thousands of people using their devices in one area, the government said today.

Minister for Information, Communications and Culture said that the thousands of people using their mobile phones during the April 28 Bersih 3.0 rally caused networks to fumble.

He also denied that the government had intentionally blocked mobile networks that day.

"There were more than 20,000 people gathering in a small area according to Bernama. A cellular telecommunications system generally does not have the capacity to accomodate phone conversations and data transfers as was needed during the Bersih rally," he said.

Rais was replying to a query by Batu Gajah MP (DAP) Fong Po Kuan, who asked why mobile networks experienced difficulties during the rally's events.

She also asked if any investigations had been conducted, and if it was true that the government had intentionally cut off communications in the area.

Rais added that blocked calls would happen when too many phone calls were made at the same time. This, he said, was because transmission cells within the network were unable to bear the large number of phone calls being made.

"When these cells are full, the system will reject these (phone) calls, resulting in blocked calls with none of them able to be made.

"Therefore, it is untrue that the government has blocked communications systems (that day)," he said.

Many people, including FMT staff, were unable to make calls, send text messages or access the internet at around 3pm that day.

Some blamed this on mobile jammers, which were supposedly set up on four-wheel-drives near the Dataran Merdeka area.

Various photographs appeared over the Internet showing these alleged jammers operating during the rally.

FMT was unable to verify if these devices were indeed jammers or communications equipment of another sort.
