Viewer Discretion Is Advised

Judge yourself by viewing this video if possible over and over again and study carefully:

Are the people there planning and getting ready to overthrow the government?

Are they communists?

Do they look like rioters, gangsters or hooligans?

Are they what the Prime Minister, IGPs (present and former), Home Minister and top leaders claimed what they are?

No police brutality, they are just doing their jobs?

Bersih: Muhyiddin trying to instigate fear

PETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0 today reminded Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to remain focused on electoral reforms and ensure the 13th general election is "clean, free and fair".

"As an elected representative and deputy prime minister, Muhyiddin should instead fulfill his responsibilities and focus his attention and energy on more important issues of electoral reforms and taking steps towards ensuring the 13th general elections are clean, free and fair.

"The huge turnout at Bersih 3.0 was a call for a fair electoral process. We remind the DPM that his role as an elected representative and minister is first and foremost to serve the needs of Malaysians, and not to advance his personal nor his party's political agenda," said the committee in a statement.

Bersih 2.0 said this in reaction to Muhyiddin who claimed on Saturday that the steering committee along with opposition alliance, Pakatan Rakyat, wanted to topple the BN through violent means after the 13th GE.

Days earlier, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad also wrote about the conspiracy on his blog.

The steering committee also dismissed the conspiracy theory hatched by Mahathir and Muhyiddin.

"Bersih 2.0 views the conspiracy theory hatched by Mahathir and supported by Muhyiddin that Bersih 2.0 intends to topple the government through chaos after the 13th general election as malicious and misleading.

"We question their intentions in hurling such wild allegations against Bersih 2.0 and attempting to instigate fear amongst the public," said the steering committee.

Political dynasty: Bane or boon? — Khoo Ying Hooi

JUNE 6 — In a recent interview with Malaysiakini, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali said he was against the practice of dynasty politics in the country.

Though he "defended" Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's family members (wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and daughter Nurul Izzah are respectively the party's president and vice president) whom he said were democratically elected to their posts, he warned PKR not to fall into the trap of "nepotism and cronyism" as in the case of Umno.

The practice of dynasty politics exists in both the Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat (PR). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is the son of the second prime minister, Tun Abdul Razak; Mukhriz Mahathir is the son of former prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad; DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng is the son of senior advisor Lim Kit Siang; Karpal Singh's sons, Gobind Singh and Jagdeep Singh, are both elected representatives; PAS Youth deputy chairman Nik Abduh is the son of PAS Spiritual Advisor Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat, and the list goes on.

We have dynasty politics everywhere, although it is most apparent in Asia. For generations, political dynasties have dominated politics and governance in Asia, particularly in South Asia. Like the Nehru-Gandhi family in India, the Bhuttos of Pakistan are one of the world's most famous political dynasties.

From the United States, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh in South Asia, to Japan and China in East Asia and Singapore, Philippines in South-east Asia, prominent family background has proved to be a central factor for one's ascendancy to the pinnacles of power. This phenomenon takes place regardless of the independent levels of economic development, cultural differences, and types of political systems.

A brief list includes: in the United States, former President George W. Bush (son of former President George Bush); in Argentina, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (wife of former President Nestor Kirchner); in Japan, former Prime Minister of Japan Yukia Hatoyama (grandson of former Prime Minister Ichirō Hatoyama); in Thailand, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra (sister of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra); and in the Philippines, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (daughter of former President Diosdado Macapagal).

In the Philippines, for example, dynasty politics is very pervasive. Each time there's an election, it serves as a regular reminder of the roles that feudal instincts and the family name play in that nation's politics. The current president Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III is the son of the former president Corazon Aquino.

According to Raymond "Mong" Palatino, a former civil society academic turned Congressman who blogs about Filipino politics, Aquino belongs to the most prominent family in the Philippines today – in fact to the most powerful political family in the past half century.

While dynasty politics continues to conquer the Senate and Congressional contests and political dynasties continue to dominate local politics so much that, there have even been demands for laws against these dynasties. Although Filipino law limits incumbents to three consecutive terms of three years each, families find a way to maintain their power through a loophole that allows relatives to run for the same office.

Such dominance, however, has grown more extensive in recent years. In a political landscape populated by family names, the prominence of so many dynastic elites makes it seem like a family business. Children of the dynasties seem to own a "licence" regarding their political power and positions while ordinary citizens can only accept the arrangement as destined.

So what are the possible consequences of the dynasty politics? Apart from contributing to corruption, the inequality in the distribution of political power may reflect imperfections in democratic representation. The dominance of dynasties anticipates the expansion of political participation and empowerment of people. There are more fundamental problems, too.

They are also in a way preventing new talent, new ideas or literally, new blood from entering politics. A senior fellow at the Tokyo Foundation, Sota Kato, said, "it takes a blood test to get elected these days". With dynasty politics, politics becomes about personalities alone and name recognition places a much more important role than the competence.

The Kennedys were the most famous Western political dynasty, while the Bush election as the second instance in American history of a father-son presidency ascertains that dynastic politics do not just happen in Third World democracies and dictator regimes.

So are we ready for another political dynasty?

Prepare for an uncertain future — Lim Sue Goan

JUNE 6 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak pointed out that the country's economy might face risks this year and next year due to global economic instability and therefore, the national capacity of response must be strengthened.

However, we have no idea how to strengthen the capacity of response as we have limited resources.

The worsening European debt crisis, the unstable US recovery and the slowdown of China's economy have led to fears of another global economic recession. World Bank president Robert Zoellick warned that the summer of 2012 offers an eerie echo of the Great Panic 2008.

The northern hemisphere has now entered summer and even if Zoellick's prophecy is not accurate, it is still certain that the euro zone will continue to cause troubles.

First of all, the Greek Parliament will have an election in the middle of this month and if the Greek people decide to leave the euro zone, it would cause the market to lose confidence in the euro and accelerate the flight of capital. The euro zone monetary system might also collapse.

Secondly, Spain is facing a financial crisis and it might need the assistance of international joint forces. The Spain economy is too huge to be saved and it might need RM1.8 trillion to save it.

Thirdly, social unrest would intensify. Unemployment in the euro zone was 11 per cent in April, with a seasonally adjusted total of 17.4 million people unemployed, up from 17.3 million. Spain had the highest rate at 24.3 per cent.

In addition, the situation of the world's top two economic powers does not look good, too. Unemployment in the US had risen to 8.2 per cent in May, showing that it had affected by the European debt crisis and its pace of recovery was bounded.

As for China, the signs of its slowing economic growth are also very obvious and its economic growth of the first quarter was almost the lowest in three years.

In such an economic situation, Malaysia must get prepared early, particularly in strengthening domestic demand and investment to offset the reduction in exports and foreign investment. A sharp drop in exports might lead to a layoff in the manufacturing industry.

However, the country has faced fiscal deficits for 15 consecutive years and the deficit has increased to 54 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP).

It is feared that the government might be unable to inject capital into the market and the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) might also be affected.

It is bad news to hear of drops in prices of oil and palm oil. The government has been too dependent on oil revenues. National revenue drops when oil price falls. The fall of palm oil price to below RM3,000 also affects the people's spending power.

Bank Negara also tightened its lending guidelines to prevent household debts from going out of control. Reduction in loans and the slowing of the economic growth engine would lead to the burst of real estate bubble bursting.

All in, the deterioration of consumer sentiment would affect the commercial industry, causing the private sector to reduce expenditure. The vicious circle would lead to a chain reaction.

Under the cloud of a possible global recession, Najib should cut the Gordian knot and schedule the general election in July. However, there is still no sign of election so far, probably due to the worries about the impacts caused by the Bersih 3.0 rally.

If the election is delayed to September or next year, the Europe debt crisis might have detonated.

Also, the government would not dare to implement massive tax reforms before the election, and the consequences would be difficult to predict.

Barisan Nasional is facing political and external economic risks, and the general public must prepare for an uncertain future. — mysinchew.com

It shouldn’t be changed just like that — Lim Mun Fah

JUNE 6 — There is nothing that's perfect in the world. There is nothing that's the best, but only the most suitable and the most feasible.

However, education officials might not share the same perspective. In their cognition, we must accept everything considered the best and it does not matter whether they are suitable or feasible.

Therefore, when the Europe and the US implemented the reading, writing and arithmetic (3Rs) system, we followed suit; when Singapore introduced the Gifted Education Programme, we introduced the Level One Evaluation to allow excellently scored students to skip Standard Four, regardless of whether our conditions were suitable, whether our teachers could handle it and whether our children could keep up the pace.

When it comes to education reform, the Education Ministry has always been too "efficient" for the people to react. They always implement policies, including far-reaching education acts, without understanding parents' views, consulting experts, holding discussions or going abroad to research and study. They just implement it, as long as they gain majority votes in Parliament regardless of the opposition from the Chinese community and education organisations.

As a result, the 3Rs system was abandoned, so were the abacus math and Standard Four skipping policy. The assessment system has been repeatedly changed, causing suffering to children while tiring teachers. However, our education standard has not moved forward because of the Education Ministry's courage to "reform".

The Education Ministry has never learned its lesson and just keeps repeating the same mistake.

The latest reform would be the plan to change the admission age to the first year of primary education from seven to five, starting from 2015, and making education compulsory from six years to nine years.

Also, the Civic Education and Kajian Tempatan subjects for Standard Four, Five and Six would be replaced by History beginning 2014. At the same time, the time duration for the Bahasa Malaysia and English language lessons would be increased, while Music lessons would be reduced to one period. The Pendidikan Jasmani lesson would also be increased to two periods to achieve the goal of 1 Murid 1 Sukan programme.

It is again a major reform this time, particularly changing the school admission age from seven years old to five years old. It would bring far-reaching effects that must not be overlooked.

And here come the old problems: Is the Education Ministry again having the final say for such a huge reform? Have parents been granted the right to express their views? Did the ministry consult experts and scholars?

It is not new to have History lessons in primary education. When I was studying in primary school in the 1960s, I started to learn national history in Standard Four and history of the four ancient civilisations in Standard Five and Six. What would be included in the syllabus of the History lessons to be restored two years later? Would it be true history or the so-called history meant to instil patriotic consciousness and gratitude?

No one would oppose to the intention of strengthening Bahasa Malaysia and English. However, does the crux of the problem lie in lacking learning periods, or the syllabus and teaching method?

Could hasty changes really help in solving the problems? Would our future leaders become another badge of white mouse for the education reform? I am at a loss, and I am worried. — MySinchew.com

Pajak tanah rezab Melayu Felda berisiko tinggi

PETALING JAYA: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) mendakwa masa depan tanah rezab Melayu kini berdepan risiko tinggi apabila dipajakkan selama 99 tahun kepada Felda Global Ventures Holdings Berhad (FGV).

Sedition probe: Police record statement from Nizar

IPOH: Two officers from the Johor Baharu North district police headquarters today recorded a statement from former Perak menteri besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin over his Twitter statement on the bid for the WWW 1 vehicle registration number by the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim.

The district's crime investigation head, DSP Sanawi Muhamad who led the investigation with DSP Sukiman Arshad, arrived at the Perak PAS office, here, at about 2pm and took about an hour to record Mohammad Nizar's statement.

The Perak PAS deputy commissioner when met by reporters, said he answered all the 28 questions posed by the police officers.

"They (police) have investigated and I have given my statement, so I leave the matter to them as I respect the police," he said.

Mohammad Nizar said the case was being investigated under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act.

On Monday, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Johor police had received 39 police reports over Mohammad Nizar's offending statement.

Anwar looking at 10-seat majority

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim said he is confident that Pakatan Rakyat would win a "comfortable" majority in the next general election that is widely expected to be held within months.

Anwar told about 70 diplomats and foreign journalists at a dinner talk on Wednesday that the opposition is ready to lead with at least a 10-seat parliamentary majority in the upcoming election.

"I don"t expect to win all the states but there are no survey that says we will do worse now compare to 2008," Anwar said.

"They (ruling coalition Barisan Nasional) tried. In the last election when they lost five states… they could not have accepted that they did not have these states. I think they are now resigned to the fact and many of them are now uncomfortable, you know ministers have lost," he added.

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is expected to call the election anytime from now before his government"s five-year mandate ends April next year.

Analysts said the election is an important gauge for Najib"s support after BN was dealt the worst blow in history by losing five states and its two-thirds majority to the opposition in the 2008 election under the previous administration.

Najib's approval ratings fell from 69 percent in February to 65 percent in May after the government was accused to have mishandled the Bersih 3.0 mass rally on April 28, according to independent pollster Merdeka Center.

Anwar described Najib as a weak prime minister who appeared to be "too scared" of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the longest serving premier who modernised Malaysia, but in Anwar's view, had "small influence" among the people.

BN real enemy to press freedom

GEORGE TOWN: Barisan Nasional is the real enemy to press freedom, blasted Penang DAP, hitting back at state BN chief Teng Chang Yeow's claim that Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was not media-friendly.

Thanks to BN's near 55-year rule, state DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow said Malaysia was now ranked joint 122nd with Tajikistan and Algeria on press freedom, and even behind Cambodia, Liberia and Zimbabwe.

Malaysian level of press freedom was described by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) as a "difficult situation".

In an open letter dated May 15, 2012 to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, RSF noted that Malaysian media was exposed to censorship and violence, and its independence has been severely curtailed by ruling coalition's political meddling.

"Surely Teng understands that press freedom is not about getting chummy with reporters," said Chow at a press conference here today.

On Monday, Teng said compared with Lim, former chief minister and Gerakan president Koh Tsu Koon was far more tolerant towards media criticisms.

Teng said that Koh has never banned any media or journalist, or rapped them for being critical of his state administration.

"But current Chief Minister Lim is a stark contrast," said Teng.

He said Lim has banned media and certain journalists, ticked off reporters who are critical of him, threatened to take legal action and has even sued the media.

Recently Lim threatened to sue any media that dared to print prevailing allegations about his private life.

Teng also said Lim's undesirable press culture has spread to other politicians, who even refused to shake hands with newsmen.

Media blackout

But Chow, also a state executive councillor, returned fire by raising questions on political ownership of media groups and government control on media permits vis-à-vis the Printing Presses and Publications Act.

He also questioned the national mainstram media blackout on French 'Scorpene' probe on Malaysia.

Chow demands Teng's explanation on his deafening silence when journalists were roughed up during Bersih 3.0.

He wants to know on whether Teng agreed with Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein's suggestion that seizing media cameras was police standard operating procedure (SOP).

He pointed out that in a recent defamation court case between Lim and Utusan Malaysia, judgment by Varghese George Varghese Jr stated that "Utusan conduct was tainted by a disregard of a basic requirement to verify, which is an integral part of responsible journalism, and that the article was published with malice against CM Lim."

He blasted Teng for being naïve, and called on him to wake up to the fact that certain media has been unfair with malicious intent against the Pakatan Rakyat state government.

"The last thing on these media organisations' agenda is fairness, freedom and democracy.

"To defend them on the basis of these ideals is not only hypocritical but utterly despicable of Teng," claimed Chow.

He justified Lim action to sue newspapers because that's the only way to defend when denied the right to reply against wild and untruthful criticisms.

Ng Wei Aik on Teng Chang Yeow

http://www.selangorku.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/guan-eng-tv3-utusan.jpg

Despite winning defamation suits against Utusan Malaysia, Utusan has continued to defame the Chief Minister. Without the right of reply, the only recourse is to sue. UMNO party organs like Utusan is not afraid of defamation suits as they have unlimited funds to pay. However, the Chief Minister does not possess unlimited resources and time to file defamation suits daily at NST or Utusan Malaysia.

DAP regrets that Teng Chang Yeow continues to adopt Gerakan President Koh Tsu Koon's discredited approach of bowing down to UMNO and its party organs Utusan Malaysia and the News Straits Times. The Penang Chief Minister's refusal to be cowed by UMNO and its party organs of Utusan Malaysia and NST has led to Teng Chang Yeow twisting and distorting Lim as not respecting the media.

DAP respects the freedom of the press, which is why DAP passed the Freedom of Information Act. DAP protects pressmen, unlike Perkasa and UMNO members who have attacked pressmen on 2 separate incidents. The first was on 1st of July 2011 and the second was at Padang Kota Lama on 26th February this year. Unfortunately, no action was taken to punish the UMNO and Perkasa perpetrators involved. If Gerakan talks so much about press freedom, why is it that Gerakan has not condemned the inaction by the federal goverment in bringing these UMNO and Perkasa culprits to court?

The Chief Minister respects press freedom, but not party organs that masquerade as newspapers. The fact that Utusan Malaysia and NST are UMNO party organs can be proven by the fact that they have consistently refused to give YAB Lim Guan Eng the right of reply. That refusal of right to reply has left the Chief Minister with no choice but choose to neither engage nor invite them to his functions as an act of self-defense.

For these 2 reasons – Utusan Malaysia and NST'! s refusa l to give right of reply and them not afraid of repeated defamation suits – the CM has no choice but to disengage with Utusan Malaysia and NST.

Would Teng Chang Yeow keep quiet if not only his personal character is defamed, but even his under-aged child and wife are viciously maligned with blatant lies and character assassination? Every person has the right to protect his family and the Chief Minister will protect his family even when those bullies are from UMNO.

Perhaps for Teng Chang Yeow, he is willing to tolerate such misbehavior from UMNO and such disgraceful behavior from Utusan Malaysia merely because it is an UMNO-owned newspaper. If Teng Chang Yeow says that the Chief Minister has no right to sue other newspapers for lies against the CM, does that mean that he will also ask UMNO leaders to stop filing defamation suits? His refusal to do so only shows his true character of not only fearing UMNO but also UMNO-owned newspapers, which is much worse than Koh Tsu Koon who only fears UMNO.

A response to Jeswan Kaur's "Will Karpal's dream come true?"

Truthbespoken

There were six photos in Jeswan Kaur's posting of previous and current PMs tittled "Will Karpal's dream come true?" However, not all the personalities were given a mention in the posting. So as a Malaysian citizen I would take the liberty to rate their performance as leader of the nation/PMs as follows. But before doing that, I would like to include Onn Jaafar into the list. Here goes ... what say you about the ratings?

Rating as Malayan/Malaysian leader/PM:

1. Onn Jaafar – (90%)
Reason:   He was 100% for national integration of Malayans.

2. Tunku Abdul Rahman  (80%)
Reason:  Notwithstanding he was honestly for Malayans and subsequently Malaysians living harmoniously under the same roof, he bears full responsibilty for ousting Onn Jaafar from his original national noble objective.

3. Abdul Razak – (50%
Reason:
He was probably not comfortable with Tunku holding on to the PM's mantle for too long. Unfortunately, he was also affected adversely by the likes and advice of Harun Idris and Mahathir and was convinced the Tunku was too soft on the non-Malays. He decided to overthrow the Tunku using violence on his countrymen. He set up the National Operations Council (NOC) and initiated the NEP aimed at improving the economic status of the Malays and other impoverised Malaysians which should last until 1990. However, his objective were later messed-up, hijacked, abused and extended by UMNOputras for anotehr 20 years ironically led by a Mamak.

4. Hussein Onn – (60%
Reason:
He was a real gentleman who was not overtly ambitious but was firm in ensuring that there must be no more upheavals during his PMship. He arrested the arrogant trouble-maker Harun Idris, placed him in prison and set the course for a more stable Malaysia. Be! ing not so creative and un-ambitious, he soon surrendered his PMship to Mahathir Mohammed.

5. Mahathir Mohammed – (30%)
Reason:
He was a disastrous PM insofar as race-relations was concerned. He deliberately enforced and expanded on his divide-and-rule policies on Malaysians, controlled the press and the whole government machinery and brought in illegal immigrants to change the population demographics of Malaysians. Through all these, he banked on the uninformed populace mainly the Malay kampong people's gullibity to sustain his  rule. Even the grand projects and highways which were built under his rule were mostly crony-based or Petronas-supported and the people will still have to suffer the effects of paying him his share or his familily through his cronies for the next few decades! His legacy was one of uncontrolled corruption, cronyism and failed race-relations amongst Malaysians.

6. Abdullah Ahmad – (40%)
Reason:
He was the one PM known best for his sleeping abilities yet he was the one who was consciously or unconsciously more liberal in allowing Malaysians to express themselves on matters of national concern probably through the influence of his son-in-law. He was a fluked-shot PM who became one when Mahathir decided he should have a mild deputy after having two strong deputies and one foremost challenger in Tunku Razaliegh earlier. He was forced to resign by his UMNO warlords after the 308 GE debacle but along the way he had already quietly amassed great fortune at the expense of the weak accountable public system and a new wife to his heart's content.  !

7. Najib Razak – (50%)
Resaon:
He is trying hard as PM but he is not strong enough or has the political will-power to overcome and rope in those wayward politicians and warlords from his own party to stand out as a successful Malaysian PM. He just do not have the guts to hold himself up to perform the Hussein Onn's act. With the baggages he is personally carrying in the submarine and altantuya affairs, he appears at most time to be a lame-duck PM being overshadowed by the domineering former PM Mahathir who is now still pulling the strings from behind the scenes and serving as UMNO's supreme spiritual political head!

All said, even in simple layman's terms here, there are so much more to be demanded from all previous PMs to make Malaysia a truly outstanding, progressive and harmonious nation. So dear Jeswan Kaur, you may have a point in bringing forward Karpal Singh's hope of having someone else in future, regardless of race or religion, to take up the mantle of Malaysia's PM so long as the leader concerned is seen and accepted as a capable nation-harmoniser-and-builder! What else can Malaysians dreamily hope for under prevailing prospects and circumstances?

A dare to Hisham: Don’t edit Bersih video

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP today challenged Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein to release, unedited, all 73 hours of video footage of the April 28 Bersih rally that the police have in their possession.

Party strongman Lim Kit Siang issued the challenge in reaction to reports that the Home Ministry would release an edited clip on its website. Initial reports said the clip would be posted today, but ministry sources subsequently said the upload has been postponed to a date to be announced this afternoon.

The ministry is most likely to get its footage from the police. The panel appointed by the government to investigate violence at the rally disclosed on Monday that police were in possession of 43 video clips with a total running time of 73 hours.

"If Hishammuddin is prepared to let the public draw their own conclusions on what happened at the Bersih rally," Lim told a press conference here, "is he prepared to upload all the 73 hours of the video clips?"

He accused the Home Minister of engaging in a "video war to support the government's conspiracy theory" and to vilify the rally, which he described as a "great historic event".

He said Hishammuddin's "priority duty" as Home Minister "is not to be accuser, judge, jury and executioner all in one" but to give his full support to independent efforts to determine the truth of what happened on April 28, such as the inquiry by Suhakam.

"He should rise above it all, unless he is not interested in the truth. Looks like he has made up his mind."

Referring to the government-appointed investigative panel, which is headed by former IGP Hanif Omar, Lim said it should be dissolved now that two of its proposed members have withdrawn. The two are former chief justice of Borneo Steve Shim Lip Kiong and Petronas corporate affairs senior general manager Medan Abdullah.

He expressed a suspicion that the Hanif panel's "real objective" was to "produce a finding to match the government's script".

Lim, who is the MP for Ipoh Timur, called upon Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to provide a progress report in Parliament on Monday on Bersih's eight demands, on the progress over the 22 recommendations made by the parliamentary select committee for electoral reform and the additional four recommendation made in the subsequent minority report.

DAP's own video

DAP today released its own video of the April 28 events. The edited video, which lasts for about 15 minutes, starts with scenes of protesters in a festive mood, holding up banners, chanting "Bersih!" and clearing rubbish from the streets. There is also a scene of Bersih leader S Ambiga asking the crowd to disperse.

"Just as Ambiga asked the crowd to disperse, the ruling government started acting violent," says the voiceover above clips of police firing tear gas and water cannon into the crowd.

The video also juxtaposes statements by Najib and Hishammuddin against happenings on the ground that appear to contradict them. For example, a scene of Hishammuddin speaking in praise of police professionalism is followed by scenes of policemen beating up protestors and journalists.

The DAP video did not show images of protesters breaching the barricade around Dataran Merdeka. Asked why this was so, DAP publicity chief Tony Pua said the that incident was subject to debate.

"We don't know what happened," he said. Referring to clips available on pro-BN websites, he said: "You have clips of Anwar Ibrahim and Azmin Ali instructing the crowd to breach the barrier, but anyone looking at the video can only see both using sign language. Even so, it does not justify the police using any form of violence against protesters who didn't breach the barrier."

The DAP video will be uploaded under 'Dapvideo' on YouTube.

Umno exploiting poor Penang Malays

GEORGE TOWN: Umno is exploiting poor Penang Malays, who make up the silent majority here, to win over their support, a PAS leader said today.

"Their votes will play a decisive role in determining who wins in the next general election," said Mujahid Yusof Rawa, a PAS central committee member.

Penang Malays are struggling to cope with the rising living costs, particularly on the island and with an acute shortage of land, affordable homes are beyond their reach.

However, Mujahid said the community should wise up and realise that Pakatan Rakyat should not be blamed for the plight they are in now.

In Penang, there are about 55 villages earmarked for development, and when and if this happens, there will be a squatter explosion.

About 7,000 families will be homeless in five districts as a result of these development projects, turning about 35,000 people into squatters, the majority of whom are Malays.

The blame for this, said Mujahid, rests squarely on Umno. Despite having ruled Penang for over 50-years with Gerakan, BN has failed to lift the Malays out of their economic doldrums.

"And, it is unfair to blame Pakatan for their plight. Malays must not fear Pakatan and vote out Umno the next polls, otherwise they will continue to be stuck in a rut.

"Umno days are numbered because they have lost the ground among the youth and non-Malays," said Mujahid.

He said that Umno set up many organisations, foundations and formulated policies to help Penang Malays, but none were effective, mostly because of corruption within its rank.

"Now, Umno wants to use the plight of the poor Penang Malays to whip up support from among the Malays from other states," he said in a bemused tone.

"Malays have only themselves to blame if they continue to support Umno. The party should not be given a second chance. They were given ample opportunities, but failed to deliver."

Mistake of the previous planners

Mujahid said, in Penang, Pakatan's policies are clear that whoever needed help got it regardless whether they are Malays, Chinese, Indians or other minorities.

"The age of playing the race or religious cards, should no longer be part and parcel of the Malaysian political landscape," said Mujahid.

He said Penang Malay's socio-economic plight is not a new one as it has been around for years. The community is struggling to cope with rising costs of living and the social changes taking place.

Previous planners, from BN, ignored the need for balanced development when they plunged the island's resources into high-end ventures such as manufacturing services and tourism.

They failed to appreciate the need to preserve the environment and the eco system, or the growing imbalances in the socio-economic structure among the various races here.

Now, the problem has reached a climax with many projects poised to take off, especially luxurious housing projects, Mujahid said.

The poor and middle-income groups are priced out of such development and unless the Pakatan government can find a way to arrest it, there'll be unhappiness among the folk here.

"It also widens the gap between the rich and the poor. We need a respite and redo the economic planning of Penang, so everyone can feel at ease," said Mujahid.

Priority duty of Hishammuddin as Home Minister is to give full support to Suhakam inquiry into Bersih 3.0 rally and dissolve the Hanif Panel instead of kicking off a video war to support official version of what happened on “428”

KDN’s Bersih video release postponed, reasons unknown

PETALING JAYA: The Home Ministry, originally scheduled to release today a video compilation of 'the original footage' of the Bersih 3.0 rally chaos, has postponed its plans.

Ministry sources said that instruction was given by the minister, Hishammuddin Hussein, earlier this morning to hold back the posting of the video on the ministry's website.

However, no apparent reason has been given for the sudden decision.

"The minister gave an instruction this morning to postpone it, we don't know the reasons as yet," a source in the ministry told FMT.

It is understood that a press release on the matter would be issued later.

On Sunday, Hishammuddin said that the video, which would show "the good, the bad, and the ugly", would be uploaded onto the ministry's website on Tuesday and could be viewed the next day.

"We are still compiling the visuals. The point of showing the video was to provide the people a wider perspective of what went down during the rally," Hishammuddin reportedly said.

"The video is to show what really happened in the rally so the rakyat can make their own judgments after viewing it and not be influenced by the narrow opinions of others," he had said.

Hishammuddin also said the ministry was ready to face the possibility of legal actions by any group after viewing the video.

Peralihan kuasa aman jika Pakatan Rakyat menang – Anwar

!
Anwar - no violence if Pakatan takes Putrajaya...

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim is confident that Pakatan Rakyat will take over Putrajaya in the coming general election with a simple majority and the power transition would be a peaceful one.

This is because BN leaders, including Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, would not want to risk their future in order to stubbornly cling to power should they lose, he said.

Anwar's response was seen as an attempt to reassure the fence-sitters after both former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin warned that the opposition might cause chaos if they lose in the next general election.

The same message was echoed by Information Minister Rais Yatim two days ago.

"By and large I think they know the people would not condone this... I think sanity will prevail because they know there will be major risk. If you create (riot), your life will be at stake.

"No country has s! een a tr ansition election stolen from the people that leaders can get away free," he told a dinner held by the Foreign Correspondents Club of Malaysia (FCCM) in Kuala Lumpur last night when asked whether riots would break out if BN loses the election.

"Unless, he (Najib) is dictated by Mahathir," added Anwar, tongue-in-cheek.

Anwar also promised no "retribution of justice" against BN leaders should Pakatan come into power.

"We want to rule, not take snipes at the opposition. If you are obsessed with the past, you will never succeed."

'Give us at least a 10-seat majority'

The former deputy prime minister appeared upbeat on Pakatan's chances in the upcoming polls, which could be called in the next few months.

"I'm absolutely certain that we'll perform much better (than 2008), enough to secure a simple majority in Putrajaya," declared a beaming Anwar.

However, like Najib, he warned voters against producing a hung parliament, but instead deliver at least a 10-seat majority to Pakatan.

"Anything exceeding 10 (seats) will be quite alright, less will be problematic in the sense they (BN) will be trying to harass (Pakatan MPs)," he said.

In other words, Pakatan will have to win a minimum of 116 out of the 222 parliamentary seats, which is an increase of 34 seats compared to its haul of 82 seats in the 2008 general election.

Najib had issued a similar warning during an earlier dialogue with FCCM members that a hung parliament would spell trouble for the nation, but he did not disclose how many seats BN has set its sights on.

He, however, conceded that regaining BN's two-thirds parliamentary majority would be "challenging".

Recipe for Pakatan's success

Meanwhile, on his recipe to put Pakatan in Putrajaya, An! war pred icted that the coalition will make major inroads in Johor and Malacca, especially among the Chinese voters who are deeply hurt by extremist groups such as Perkasa, which he claimed is endorsed and funded by Umno.

The Indian community, he said, is angered by the insults and abuses inflicted by Umno-linked right-wing groups on Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan, leader of the movement campaigning for free and fair elections.

In Sarawak, Pakatan has been working extremely hard over the past four years after it lost miserably in the last general election, winning only one parliament seat out of 31 seats.

According to Anwar, the anti-establishment Radio Free Sarawak is very popular in the Iban longhouses, which Pakatan hopes to score gains among those from the majority ethnic group.

As for Sabah, the emergence of new state-based opposition parties, he said, will bring surprises that will eventually change the political landscape in the state.

Nevertheless, Anwar conceded that the main battle will be over the Malay voters, whom both PKR and PAS are doing their best to win their support.

Naquiyuddin’s ‘pill’ targets dengue scourge

By Romen Bose

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian prince is promoting a novel weapon against the worsening scourge of dengue fever: a protein "pill" that starves mosquito larvae and could revolutionise the global dengue fight.

It is a fight that is intensifying: more than 2.5 billion people — around 40 percent of Earth's population — live in areas susceptible to the mosquito-borne virus, with up to 100 million infected annually, according to the World Health Organisation.

Dengue kills 20,000 people worldwide every year, and its complexity — and what health advocates say is a lack of priority given the race to find cures for higher profile viruses such as AIDS — means a vaccine has proved elusive.

It is mainly transmitted to humans by the aedes aegypti mosquito, and causes symptoms including high fever, body aches, rashes and heavy fatigue. In severe cases, white blood cells drop to potentially fatal levels.

Enter Prince Naquiyuddin Jaafar, one of the most popular members of Malaysia's nobility, whose anti-dengue technology targets the offspring of mosquitoes in a bid to win the battle against the virus-spreading pest.

A former diplomat and son of Malaysia's past king, Naquiyuddin, 65, has been involved in a wide range of philanthropic and charitable pursuits, but dengue has been a particular passion.

It is a growing problem in Malaysia, where cases surged 22 percent to 6,141 from January to March this year, with 17 deaths. Just eight dengue deaths were reported for all of 2011.

Among Naquiyuddin's diverse business activities is the biotech company he founded in 2007, EntoGenex, which has taken a pre-existing protein called the Trypsin Modulating Oostatic Factor, or TMOF, and developed it into what he calls a fatal "diet pill" for mosquitoes.

'Larvae love yeast'

TMOF is mixed into yeast cells which are then inserted in rice husks, allowing them to float on water where they will be eaten by mosquito larvae, said Alan Brandt, EntoGenex's research head. "Larvae love yeast," he added.

Once consumed, it shuts down mosquito larvae digestive systems, starving them to death before they can grow and spread dengue, Naquiyuddin said as he showed slides and photographs of dead mosquitos at the firm's high-tech research facility in downtown Kuala Lumpur.

"The 'pill' has a 100 percent success rate against all larvae species within 24 hours, and there is no way for resistance to build as it is not a toxic chemical but a protein which only affects mosquitos," Naquiyuddin said.

The protein stops production of trypsin, a critical enzyme without which digestion cannot occur.

TMOF is harmless to animals and humans, Brandt said, washing a handful of the rice husks down with a glass of water in his laboratory as proof.

The firm has combined the TMOF with the equally tongue-twisting bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) bacteria, which eats holes in the guts of larvae but is non-toxic to people.

Most larvae die within an hour, and nearly all within 24 hours, according to EntoGenex, which has held several successful Malaysian field trials with universities and health authorities.

"What they have come up with is quite remarkable in combining Bti and TMOF, and the field trials have shown that there is success in using it," said the Malaysian Health Ministry's Disease Control Division director Chong Chee Kheong.

Although known for hundreds of years, dengue has emerged as a global health problem in recent decades as cases have rapidly mounted.

This spread has been blamed on factors including population growth, urbanisation, and increased human mobility taking the disease to new areas.

Field trial

Authorities in Malaysia are unsure of the reasons driving the recent spike in cases there, but have speculated that wetter weather as a result of changing climate patterns could be a factor.

Current methods of mosquito control include fogging with chemicals such as the insecticide DDT which can be harmful to both humans and animals, and to which insects can develop a resistance.

Malaysia in 2010 released 6,000 genetically modified mosquitoes designed to have offspring with shorter lifespans but no more releases were made amid concerns as to how the insects would interact with their cousins in the wild.

Naquiyuddin's "pill" is now registered for use in Malaysia, Pakistan and the Philippines, while Ghana, South Africa, Cameroon and Sri Lanka are either conducting field trials or seeking approvals to use it.

He hopes it could potentially become a weapon in the even larger fight against malaria, which kills an estimated 650,000 people per year.

More than $ 5 billion is needed annually to control malaria but only $ 1.8 billion is being put into the fight, according to Roll Back Malaria, a group that carries out global anti-malaria campaigns.

The "pill", which costs about one-eighth the price of manufacturing conventional neurotoxins like DDT, will lower costs dramatically, said Naquiyuddin.

"We are offering a cheaper and much healthier alternative to fighting dengue and malaria, and this is why we are in the business: to improve the quality of life of people, while helping to solve a major health threat," he said.

"If it means my wife and family will never again have to worry about dengue, then I urge the government and businesses to help make it available to everyone," said Ahmad Ismail, 47.

A recent field trial in the suburb where he lives north of the capital Kuala Lumpur caused dengue cases to disappear, said Ahmad, an engineer whose wife was struck down with the virus just months before the trial. She later recovered.

Azmin: Why 17 years later?

PETALING JAYA: PKR deputy president Azmin Ali has asked why it took the authorities 17 years to pursue a corruption case against him.

"Why didn't they do it during 1995, 96, 97? It's been 17 years since 1998.

"Whatever action that needed to be taken… should have been done 17 years ago. Why was this matter raised last week. Even the IO (investigating officer) has passed away," he told reporters here.

He was referring to the decision by the MACC review panel to recommend that the case against Azmin be re-opened based on new information revealed by blogger Raja Petra Raja Kamarudin.

According to Raja Petra's documents, Azmin was supposedly involved in corruption while he served as Anwar Ibrahim's (then deputy prime minister) political aide in 1995.

This included the allegation that Azmin was paid a monthly stipend of RM15,000 by Berjaya Group tycoon Vincent Tan, and paper trails seemingly showing him and his wife owning millions of Ringgit in shares, houses and cars.

This was despite Azmin earning less than RM3,000 a month at the time.

Anwar covered up Bank Negara losses, says RPK

The influential blogger said the former deputy prime minister had absolved Bank Negara of any wrong-doing in 1994, which prompted Lim Kit Siang to accuse Anwar Ibrahim of lying.
(FMT) - Former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim was involved in covering up the multi-billion ringgit losses by Bank Negara some 20 years ago, blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin claimed.
In his blog posting yesterday, the blogger said that even DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang had called An! war a li ar in 1994 when the latter was alleged to have denied it.
"Lim raised the matter in Parliament back in the mid-1990 and Anwar denied it. Lim was so upset that he accused Anwar of lying to the august House," alleged Raja Petra.
Raja Petra was responding to former Bank Negara deputy governor Dr Rosli Yaakop's allegation two days ago, when the latter reportedly told a forum that there were four people involved in the losses amounting to RM30 billion suffered by Bank Negara between 1992 and 1993.
Rosli named former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin, former Bank Negara governor, the late Jaafar Hussein, and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nor Mohamed Yakcop of being involved in the scandal.
He accused them of gambling recklessly on the foreign exchange (forex) speculation activities at the expense of Bank Negara's assets.
It was said that Jaafar and Nor were trying to beat billionaire financial speculator George Soros in the forex speculation market.
When the matter was raised in Parliament in April 1994 by Lim, Anwar had denied it, saying he was "fully satisfied with the reasons" given by Jaffar for the Bank Negara's forex losses.
Raja Petra said that Anwar's attempt to cover up the losses itself is tantamount to him being involved in the scandal.
The blogger also queried Rosli, who is also a PAS member, on why he did not expose the matter in 1999, when he resigned from Bank Negara.
"Why after more than 10 years did he decide to speak up even though he has not offered any evidence to support his allegation?" asked Raja Petra.

Dear Administrator, I am resending my comments below that I forwarded to you a little while ago, but I'm not sure if it reached you because I accidentally press some buttons. Thanks!

I would like to share my thoughts from a layman's point of view as follows:

When the matter was raised in Parliament in April 1994 by Lim, Anwar had denied it, saying he was "fully satisfied with the reasons" given by Jaffar for the Bank Negara's forex losses.

•It looks like the person who really tried to cover up the case was the late Jaffar Hussein, the then Bank Negara Governor. If Anwar was "fully satisfied with the reasons" and Lim had no evidence in hand or grounds to push the case further, Lim, being the astute politician he is, knew it was pointless to pursue the case presupposing that the four great-time gamblers had faultlessly and fully covered their tracks.

Raja Petra said that Anwar's attempt to cover up the losses itself is tantamount to him being involved in the scandal.

•If what Anwar said was tantamount to him being involved in the scandal, I believe it should be proven, not assumed, that Anwar was privy to the case as well. Isn't this stretching the matter? If not, couldn't it similarly be said that Lim was "fully satisfied with the reasons" given by Anwar and therefore it was tantamount to Lim also being involved in the scandal? Certainly, no!

The blogger also queried Rosli, who is also a PAS member, on why he did not expose the matter in 1999, when he resigned from Bank Negara.

•I believe Dr. Rosli is no fool and neither was he "chicken." He was not only ! careful and realistic but also smart and wise knowing that was not the right time to expose the matter then, unless he wanted himself and maybe his entire family persecuted by the authorities. Remember how Marina Yusof was mercilessly treated and punished after she challenged the PM then?

"Why after more than 10 years did he decide to speak up even though he has not offered any evidence to support his allegation?" asked Raja Petra.

•Probably, he is brave enough and he thinks it's the right time to do so now. He knew and we wonder how many others with him knew about the nonsense that was going on in Bank Negara then even though they might not have access to the hard evidence. Did Bank Negara ever dabble in forex trading and lost billions as alleged? If it did, that meant it was an undeniable fact, the evidence notwithstanding. Maybe it's time to get to the bottom of his horrendous felony.
