How to resist Big Brother 2.0 — Don Tapscott

MAY 20 — As the Net becomes the basis for commerce, work, entertainment, healthcare, learning and much human discourse, each of us is leaving a trail of digital crumbs as we spend a growing portion of our day touching networks.

The books, music and stocks you buy online, your pharmacy purchases, groceries scanned at the supermarket or bought online, your child's research for a school project, the card reader at the parking lot, your car's conversations with a database via satellite, the online publications you read, the shirt you purchase in a department store with your store card, the prescription drugs you buy — and the hundreds of other network transactions in a typical day — point to the problem.

Computers can inexpensively link and cross-reference such databases to slice, dice and recompile information about individuals in hundreds of different ways. This makes these databases enormously attractive for government and corporations that are keen to know our whereabouts and activities.

George Orwell's iconic text Nineteen Eighty-Four described the dystopian society where a totalitarian state rules in its own interests and everyone is under constant surveillance by authorities. This situation was often correctly alleged about the totalitarian East Bloc countries during the Cold War.

It is unfortunately increasingly true of Western democracies today. In the name of national security, governments are collecting real-time information from us, sampling phone calls, emails and social networks, and taking our biometrics at airports and a growing list of other places.

We have little idea what governments are doing with this flood of personal information. And the aftermath of 9/11 should remind us just how quickly our civil liberties can be undermined in the name of national security.

Recently the New York Times reported that: "Law enforcement tracking of cellphones, once the province mainly of federal agents, has become a powerful and widely used surveillance tool for local police officials, with hundreds of departments, large and small, often using it aggressively with little or no court oversight."

The Times reports that this practice has become big business for cellphone companies, too, as carriers market a catalogue of "surveillance fees" to police departments to determine a suspect's location, trace phone calls and texts, or provide other services. Sure, you could argue that it's becoming difficult to restrict the information that governments can collect, and yes of course we need to be vigilant about how that information should be used. But we still need to resist attempts of governments to collect unnecessary information. We still need to fight for the basic privacy principle of "data minimization" — of limiting the information collected to clearly definable and socially helpful purposes.

There should be no tapping of phones or anything else without due process. If a government agency proposes setting up a video camera in your neighbourhood, you need to decide if the benefits of possible crime reduction outweigh the possible dangers of unknown governments being able to watch you constantly.

Or increasingly, governments want to collect biometrics information about you — like fingerprints, retinal scans and even DNA. We each need to make choices. Sometimes this benefits you with better government services or faster movement through airports. But what are the long-term implications should a government agency or individual become malevolent? The average person must be cautious and vigilant, and even resist the collection of unnecessary personal information.

To me, it's not so likely that the future will resemble Orwell's 1984, or Jeremy Bentham's panopticon prison, or an East Bloc police state during the Cold War. Those are dystopic models from another era that depended upon a single, all-knowing malevolent power seeking control.

The appropriate metaphor for the growing loss of privacy today is found in Frank Kafka's The Trial: The central character awaits trial and judgment by an inscrutable bureaucracy for a crime that he is not told about, using evidence that is never revealed to him, in a process that is equally random and inscrutable.

In like manner, we, too, will be judged and sentenced in absentia by unknown public and private bureaucracies having access to our personal data. We will be the targets of social engineering, decisions, and discrimination, and we will never really know what or why.

In the private sector, companies want to know more and more about what makes each of us tick — our motivations, behaviour, attitudes and buying habits. The good news is that companies can give us highly customized services based on this intimate knowledge — and build trusting relationships. Sometimes it is great to have highly customized ads.

I don't want to hear or see car ads except when I am interested in buying a new car. When I am, I would like to advise the car companies to bring it on! And as the Net becomes part of almost everything we do, the possibilities are limitless for fabulous, customized value for each of us, courtesy of the corporate world.

But there is a dark side. Companies can use our personal information to our disadvantage. Some of these are rogue "bad actors." In the Rupert Murdoch tabloid scandal in the UK, cellular phone company technicians could sell the location of a specific phone. This way Murdoch's reporters could track down celebrities.

Now, imagine a world where corporations have near-perfect information about each of us. As the aphorism goes, "knowledge is power." Could companies go beyond fairly influencing us to being able to manipulate us? Could they abuse their detailed knowledge and cause us to purchase goods or services or take other actions that are not in our interests?

We already live in a consumer society where people go into debt to purchase things they really can't afford. If corporations had information about our every purchase, articles we read, movies we watch, things we say, places we go, food we eat, medications we take and "big data" from myriad other sources, how could they use that asymmetrical power to advance their interests against ours?

Sometimes the information is used in a very roundabout way. Drug companies buy information from pharmacies about the medicines doctors prescribe to their patients. That way they know which doctors to target for their advertising and promotional campaigns, in the hope that the doctor will prescribe different drugs.

So, given that there are few controls and even fewer companies that practice "privacy by design," it makes sense to be cautious about what information you provide.

Don't fill out warranty cards. A warranty is valid whether or not you fill out a card. They simply provide information about you to companies.

Refuse junk mail, and take time tweaking your spam filter.

Don't let a merchant copy your driver's license. Never give out your Social Security number unless it's legally required.

Make sure that online forms are secure. Don't automatically consent to the collection, use or storage of your personal information.

Question why people want your personal information. Make it clear that you do not wish your information to be disclosed to any third party.

There are many things you can do, while we wait for companies to change how they treat our data.

Moreover, the information you provide has value — to market researchers, advertising companies, social networks and other online platforms. But most companies disagree that individuals own the rights to such information, since people provide the data for free or nearly free.

The entire value of Facebook, estimated at US$ 100 billion (RM300 billion), for example, is the knowledge it has of its users: their likes and dislikes, what they say, what they do, where they shop, who their friends are, and so on.

The degree of detail Facebook has is mind-boggling. Facebook does not pay users any money in exchange for this information. Facebook insists that it provides a superior service as a result and that the service is sufficient payment.

The same is true of Google. It prides itself on its accurately targeted advertising, for which its advertising clients pay top dollar. None of this money is shared with Google's users, however. If they are selling your information without your permission, they are depriving you of the opportunity to capture that income yourself.

The situation becomes more grim when companies exchange information with one another or with different arms of the same corporation, taking a series of seemingly simple isolated acts and compiling them into a detailed profile of an individual's behaviour.

Google recently announced it would share information across its search engine, YouTube downloads, Gmail use and more than 50 other separate services the company provides. Again, this is done so that Google has as detailed a profile of individuals' behaviour as possible so that advertisers will pay more for the possibility of influencing your behaviour.

If history is any guide, advances in privacy have tended to arise in the wake of widespread privacy abuses — for example, the negative effects of mass printing presses, the emergence of the fascist state, and the abuses of credit reporting companies in the 1960s. Something similar may be happening today with data breaches and identity theft "in the cloud," as more and more people come to understand the pain and consequences of personal data misuse.

By all means, be as open as you want, but realize that with openness can come vulnerabilities, especially for your children. "Discretion is the better part of valour," to borrow Shakespeare's thought, and that means it makes sense to be careful in the face of unintended consequences and risks. — Reuters

An obituary for Mahathirism ~ by Josh Hong

A deranged doctor in the house

Josh Hong | Malaysiakini
4:07PM May 18, 2012

Mahathir Mohamad may have been a dutiful and well-respected medical doctor back in the 1940s. But his decision to enter the political fray has - it's safe to say - turned out to be a sheer nightmare for the country as a whole.

Mahathir could have maintained his good reputation as a doctor, but his name is now ruined, forever associated with the Twin Towers of corruption and cronyism, his only solace being perhaps the personal wealth that he and his sons managed to accumulate when he was at the zenith of his tyrannical rule.

And the most pathetic thing about this old man is that he had a choice to become either a statesman or a rascal, but he has clearly opted to be remembered as a deranged veteran who refuses to believe the world around him has changed.

By any standards, Mahathir was an intelligent man among his contemporaries. Even Lee Kuan Yew found him a tough nut to crack.

Lee is an elite member of the old anglophile school who could easily quote a famous British judge to justify his own autocratic governance, but was confronted with tremendous difficulties in articulating his thoughts with the masses in Singapore's early days as an independent state. But Mahathir, himself from the top drawer of his time, was often able to return to the grassroots and arouse populist sentiment for his own cause when the going got tough.

Which makes it all the more tragic that the doctor has now become deranged in his own house. With Barisan Nasional appearing to lose power sooner or later, he is living in great fear of his own misdeeds and transgressions being laid bare under the Malaysian sun. Had Mahathir been a righteous and just-minded leader, he would not have to shudder constantly at the scenario of an alternative government, for his rectitude would remain intact, come what may.

But integrity is precisely what the doctor is short of. To pre-empt potential change of government, he is now working profusely to smear both the Bersih movement and the opposition by joining the government's chorus of vilification.

In fact, he is almost a lead singer!

Admittedly, Mahathir, who is single-handedly responsible for the erosion of the Malaysian judiciary does not see eye to eye with the Bar Council. The bad blood, however, came only from the doctor himself as he tried to 'fix' the judges as he did his own patients in Alor Star. His caustic remarks that the Bar Council has become a political party therefore only reveal his ineptitude in understanding the role of the legal fraternity.

Hence, it was a blessing that the colonial administration allegedly denied him a scholarship to read law in London!

Instead of hurling hollow accusations at the Bar Council, Mahathir should have the decency to admit as many as 90 percent of the judges, high-ranking police officers and "mainstream" journalists - especially those from RTM, TV3, Utusan Malaysia, Berita Harian, The Star and the New Straits Times - actually joined Umno and became his underlings after 1988.

Speaking truth to power

No, the Bar Council is not partisan. It just so happens that the current government is more often than not found to be on the wrong side of the law, and our lawyers are duty-bound to correct it. A Singaporean lawyer once told me how much she wished her colleagues back home would have the guts to speak truth to power like many of her Malaysian counterparts. This time on the Bersih 3.0 rally, the Malaysian Bar Council has again proven her right, of which I am indeed proud.

And Mahathir consistently refuses to accept the simple fact that Malaysians have different political identifications as rightful citizens. As far as he sees it, anyone who votes for the opposition is a bad Malaysian and less worthy, yet he ought to be told that not all who vote for Pas are religious "fanatics" and those who opt for the DAP are Chinese "chauvinists". They simply want a government that is less corrupt, more honest and knows its limits.

My parents, for one, voted first the Barisan Sosialis Rakyat Malaya and then PAS throughout their lives, and did that make them racists or religious bigots? And how would "racists" like my parents have chosen PAS over either the MCA or the Chinese-dominated Gerakan in the first place? Can the doctor see the abject lack of logic in his view?

Simply put, Mahathir is now so paranoid and caught up with profound angst that he has lost all his senses, bent only on poisoning the minds of the Malays - young and old alike - with his race-centric rhetoric. Instead of championing greater transparency, public accountability and political integrity, he is going on an immoral crusade against anyone who simply wants to make Malaysia a better country to live in.

Which, in retrospect, was perhaps a reason why he was rejected by the colonial administration, for Mahathir just beats the British at their own game: divide and rule that is.

JOSH HONG studied politics at London Metropolitan University and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. A keen watcher of domestic and international politics, he longs for a day when Malaysians will learn and master the art of self-mockery, and enjoy life to the full in spite of politicians.

‘Majority of rural folks earn below RM850′

KUCHING: Krian assemblyman Ali Biju has questioned the state government's programme to modernise agriculture and eradicate poverty in rural areas.

Debating the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng's address in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly sitting, Biju said:

"The state government has been developing large-scale plantations for commercial crop.

"However, Bumiputera participation in agri-business does not even reach 20% and the majority of rural communities are having income below the poverty line index of RM850 per month.

"As such, an aggressive socio-economic transformation plan is required in rural areas.

"This transformation requires complete overhaul of agricultural practices and construction of basic infrastructures."

Citing the situation in the Krian constituency, Biju said the most effective way to improve socio-economic conditions in rural communities is to develop smallholdings of commercial crop, especially oil palm and high-yield rubber.

"Smallholdings do not only eradicate poverty rate among rural farmers but also reduce dependency on foreign workers in plantation, provide job opportunities, minimise rural-urban migration, develop rural entrepreneur, empower rural communities and provide a sense of pride to farmers through self-reliance.

"It also helps to preserve native culture and customary practices on their land.

"Smallholdings of four hectares of proper commercial farms can create tremendous socio-economic change for rural households," Biju said.

He urged the government of the day to come out with specific programme to assist and cultivate at least four hectares per family of commercial crops, either oil palm or rubbers.

No assistance for smallholders

He said that throughout the Krian constituency, there are many genuine poor rural farmers interested in oil palm planting.

"However, a lot of their applications for assistance to MPOB [Malaysian Palm Oil Board] office are not entertained or not processed without any reason.

"I would like to thank State Agricultural Modernisation Minister [Alfred Jabu Numpang] in his oral reply that the government will provide assistance through MPOB irrespective of their political affiliation since poverty eradication is applicable to all poor farmers.

"So far, the government has not allocated sufficient budget to cater for the needs of oil palm smallholders. I would like to know how much has been allocated to oil palm smallholders.

"How many applications have been received and approved by MPOB?" Biju asked.

He also questioned the financial capability of the government to plant 200,000ha by 2021 of high- yield rubber trees as planned by Pemandu (Performance Management and Delivery Unit).

"I would like to express my concern on the availability of federal fund to finance such an ambitious undertaking.

"Such undertaking costs about RM13,500 per ha to plant rubber trees so the government has to set a budget of RM2.7 billion over the next 10 years or RM270 million per year.

"Looking at the budget to plant rubber for 2012 of about RM70 million, it means we are way behind our target already," he said.

Rubber smallholders

A lot of smallholders, through their own efforts, plant commercial crops like oil palm and rubber without waiting for assistance from agricultural department.

"They are facing many obstacles, especially relating to terracing and construction of farm roads leading to their farms.

"I urge the agricultural department to come out with a specific scheme to assist those genuine farmers.

"Rubber smallholders are also facing problem with the quality of seedlings provided through the agricultural department.

"Many of the seedlings cannot grow properly or simply die after planting. Replacement seedlings should be supplied immediately to replace dead seedlings.

"Farmers must be advised and given technical training assistance so that they can produce their own seedlings with quality 'bud eyes' taken from reputable suppliers of high-yield rubber clones," he added.

Traders plan two-day market at Ambiga's house...

Sixty petty traders are planning to open up stalls in front of electoral reform group Bersih 3.0 co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan's house in Bukit Damansara here on Thursday and Friday.

Pembangkang dakwa rakyat makan rumput

Sekitar Dun Sarawak

‘No clean water, electricity in Krian’

KUCHING: Despite having been under Barisan Nasional rule for four election terms, longhouses, schools and clinics in the Krian constituency are still without clean water and electricity.

Raising this issue during the current Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting, Krian assemblyman Ali Biju said clean treated water and electricity were rare commodities in Krian as well as in the state government-owned Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Salcra) settlements.

He said Salcra, which has been tasked with developing NCR land into oil plam plantations, had failed to provide electricity to some 13 longhouses in the Krian constituency as part of its obligation.

"The construction of electrical transmission lines along Ulu Awik and Ulu Kabo areas under rural electrification scheme has been stalled due to Salcra's refusal to have its oil palm trees under the transmission line to be cut down.

"I urge the state authority to settle the matters with Salcra for the sake of the people.

"Those longhouses are Rumah Ngerubong, Engkala; Rumah Balang, Sungai Sawa; Rumah Majang, Ukir; Rumah Aji, Jaong; Rumah Achai, Ulu Awik; Rumah Beti, Ulu Awik; Rumah Kat Jugah, Ulu Awik; Rumah Entalang, Lubok Rembai; Rumah Jilan, Ulu Risau; Rumah Tangan, Ulu Risau; Rumah Bennet Buan, Ulu Risau; Rumah Kadam, Sungai Tapang and Kabo Ulu," he said.

Biju also said that many longhouses, clinics, and schools in his constituency still do not have clean treated water and proper electricity.

He said the longhouses that did not have clean water included Rumah Belong, Munggu Embawang; Rumah Untan, Tanjung Sikup; Rumah Tajak, Kaki Wong; Rumah Gana, Nanga Drau, Sungai Tapang and Sungai Wong.

He also said that schools and many more longhouses in Krian constituency were not listed in the construction of clean water project currently being carried out.

Biju was elected as the Krian assemblyman in the April election last year after he defeated the four-term incumbent Peter Nyarok. Nyarok was the former deputy president of Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP).

Fear over perimeter survey

Biju also said many native landowners in his constituency are worried about the perimeter survey exercise, which will convert their NCR land into so-called Communal Reserve Land under Section 6 of the Land Code

"Section 6 (3) of Sarawak Land Code mentions clearly that such land remains as state land whereby landowners become licensees only from the government.

"Many native landowners havde refused to convert their NCR land into Communal Reserved Land.

"Instead, Krian natives have been waiting for the establishment of a NCR Land Registry under the Land and Survey Department.

"It is surprising to know that this assembly had passed the native land registry legislation way back in 2000 but so far has yet to be implemented or gazetted.

"Once the registry is established, native landowners can be easily trained to demarcate their own NCR land for registration," he said.

He also suggested that the state government survey all NCR land under Section 18 of the Land Code as this is what native landowners want.

He said that "land use map" for Sarawak and Brunei showed that there is no state land in Krian constituency.

"The natives have been in occupation of the area long before the coming of Rajah Brooke.

"Recently Awik-Kabo natives discovered certain parts of their NCR land of about 2,000ha are mentioned as state land.

"They are concerned about the matter as they know that there is definitely no state land in that area.

"In view of this, I am seeking a proper explanation from the Land and Survey Department," Biju said.

No regrets joining Bersih 3.0,says MCA member...

Kian Sit Har malacca mca wanita chief at bersih 3.0
As thousands of yellow-clad protesters took to the streets on April 28 in cities across the country for clean and fair elections, Malacca was no exception as some 5,000 protesters converged at the town's own public square, Dataran Pahlawan.

Standing at the frontline of the protest and clad in matching bright yellow T-shirt and cap, was 73-year-old Kian Sit Har, whose photograph later made into the newspapers.

Kian's presence at the rally earned the wrath of Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam as the septuagenarian is no ordinary MCA member.

Kian joined MCA at the tender age of 18 when the country was on the cusp of independence, and went on to found the Malacca Wanita MCA in 1975, and through countless party elections, remains its president to this day - 37 years later.

NONEBut her elder politician status did not however protect her from Mohd Ali's ire as he accused Kian of backstabbing the BN and demanded that she resign from MCA.

Despite the furore, Kian told Malaysiakini in an interview at her office in Malacca last week that she had "no regrets" for participating in the Bersih 3.0 rally.

"I'm happy and proud that I had not missed this chance to stand with the young people," said the former senator, adding that it was a "lost" for those who did not join the rally.

The experience, she said, was unlike anything she had seen among young Malaysians previously.

"I saw so ma! ny young people, even beautiful ladies were willing to stand under the hot sun and chanted 'Bersih!'

"Last time, the ladies wouldn't want to go for such things. They would be more worried about getting sunburn, but the young generation now care about their country," she said in reference to her work with women during her early years in Wanita MCA.

"I have never seen anything like this before."

Dataran Pahlawan also cordoned off

Explaining the photograph depicting her with a raised fist at the protest, Kian said she did not want to appear like a "MCA spy" by standing silently amongst protesters, and had decided to join in with chants of "Bersih".

"I arrived at about 12 noon, many people were already there. I admired the young people, they were very creative with their banners, they made special hats and even had something to wear on their nose," she chirped.

NONELike Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur, protesters in Malacca arrived that Saturday only to find their iconic Dataran Pahlawan - the place where 'Bapa Malaysia' Tunku Abdul Rahman had, immediately on returning from London, declared that Malaya would gain independence - had been cordoned off by the authorities.

"There was a brass band performing," she lamented. "I never heard about it (the event) before and only a few schools sent their team. Maybe it was organised at the last minute to prevent us from going in."

On the plus side, Kian said the police did not rough up protesters and their conduct was exemplary.

NONE"I do! n't feel it was right to say that Bersih 3.0 had wanted to topple the government. The police here were very good, they only stood and watch. If the police in KL were like that, I don't think anything (untoward) would happen," she said.

"That day, the coffee shops were full of people, businesses were doing great. I spoke with other participants and we exchanged views. I made many new friends and met school teachers too," said Kian, who was herself a former teacher.

Kian stayed out of last July's Bersih 2.0 protest after MCA threatened disciplinary action against those who took part. But she decided to join the rally this time when MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek said the party would not object.

However, following Mohd Ali's criticism, Chua poured scorn on Kian. Nevertheless, he stated that the party would not take action against her to avoid turning her into a hero.

NONEKian defended her presence at the rally, pointing out that the demand for clean elections and the opposition to the Lynas rare earth processing plant - which was advocated by environmentalists at the Bersih 3.0 protest - are issues supported by the party.

She dismissed claims by Mohd Ali that her presence among the protest leaders suggested she had a hand in organising the rally.

Kian said there were other MCA members who had joined the protest though they were not from the party's top echelons.

"As a leader, we need to know what the people want and to stand with them," she insisted.

'Don't point the gun at me'

Asked to comment on rumours that she will be quitting MCA, Kian said that it had never crossed her mind.

"Of course, after how the president scolded me, ! people w ould expect me to leave the party.

"But I am faithful and loyal to the party, not the individuals in the party. Throughout my life, I've seen many party crises but I will not simply leave the party," she said.

NONEAcknowledging the negative public sentiments against MCA, Kian stressed that Malaysians could serve the people "anywhere", be it in the opposition, the ruling party or even NGOs.

Aside from her role as a women's leader, Kian heads the Malaysian Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis (Malacca) and she is also the vice-chairperson of Rumah Sejahtera Bukit Baru, an old folks home.

The Bersih 3.0 protest, she said, was something that the party leaders needed to reflect on, rather than spending their time condemning her for her prominent participation in the event.

"Frankly speaking, as a MCA member, I'm worried - why so many young people, so many rakyat went to the streets (on that day), this is a big question mark for us.

"I hardly see these people before, even housewives came out... If there are weaknesses in BN, then we must change. Don't point the gun at me, I'm just an ordinary citizen," she said.

EC to ensure postal voting for media personnel transparent

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) will ensure that the postal voting process for media personnel during 13th general election is transparent to avoid negative perception and complaints from various parties.

Deputy chairman Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said EC will avoid third parties and proposed that media personnel take ballot papers from the returning officers (RO) office where they are registered and vote.

"Media personnel can use the 10-day campaign to return to their respective constituencies to collect them as the campaign period is quite long," he told Bernama today.

Postal voting for media personnel are among 22 recommendations of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Electoral Reform which the EC agreed to implement.

Facilities for postal voting is in accordance with sub-regulation 3 (1) (f) Election Regulations (Postal Voting) 2003.

Wan Ahmad said the EC is prepared to give exemption to media personnel who are assigned too far from their registered areas such as Sabah and Sarawak.

"Eligible media personnel must apply to become postal voters from their respective ROs and the applications must be supported by their employers.

"The form can be downloaded from the EC official website after an announcement, including the submission deadline," he said, adding that not all media personnel are entitled to become postal voters.

Among information that must be furnished is their voting registered address and place they are assigned to during general election.

"When the application as postal vote has been approved, the name of the media personnel will be removed from the standard elctoral roll."

He urged employers to finalise the assignment location as changes at the last minute will not be entertained once the EC has approved application as postal voters.

On the rationale for media personnel to return to their areas to vote, Wan Ahmad said the EC did not want it politicised by sending ballot papers to their assignment locations.

"EC does not want the ballot papers to get lost as our practice is to send them to the office of ROs where the voters are registered.

"If you want, the RO office can send ballot papers to the RO office where media personnel are located but this will lead to speculation and wild accusations against the EC."

He, however, said that all are still proposals and the EC is willing to receive feedback to ensure smooth implementation of postal voting for media personnel for the benefit of all parties.

Muzakarah UMNO-PAS Patut Diteruskan

MUZAKARAH UMNO-PAS PATUT DITERUSKAN
Prof Madya Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin
(sertai facebook DrMAZA.com dan twitter realDrMAZA)

Saya suka dengan idea muzakarah UMNO-PAS. Sejak dahulu lagi saya menyokong hasrat itu. Berdialog, berbincang, berunding, cuba memahami antara satu sama lain adalah perlambangan manusia bertamadun. Kedua parti besar itu mewakili rakyat kita yang sudah dan ingin bertamadun, maka adalah patut untuk mereka menzahirkan manifestasi ketamadunan itu dalam bentuk mampu berbincang apabila ada keperluan. Maka di sini saya ingin sebutkan beberapa perkara yang saya lihat perlu diberikan perhatian dalam hasrat tersebut;

No protection for civil servants involved in illegal rallies

KOTA BARU: The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Service (Cuepacs) will not protect members found guilty of participating in an unlawful assembly, president Omar Osman said.

Reminding members to stay away from such gatherings, he said: "Those caught will have to face the consequences themselves. It is not in our jurisdiction to help them.

"According to regulation, it is clearly stated that civil servants cannot participate in such gathering because it can jeopardise the country's security.

"Civil servants found guilty of participating in such unlawful assemblies can lose their jobs."

He said this when met after the opening of a nursing seminar held in conjunction with the state-level World Nursing Day celebrations here today.

International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed opened the event.

In a related matter, Omar requested the police to give the names of civil servants who were detained in connection with an unlawful assembly which was supported by the opposition in Kuala Lumpur last April 28.

"Cuepacs wants to meet them [the civil servants] to know the reason which prompted them to participate in the gathering," he added.

He said Cuepacs was prepared to organise briefing sessions for its members to explain to them the regulation prohibiting them from participating in such gatherings.

Mohan to Rama: Quit your HEB post

GEORGE TOWN: P Ramasamy should step down as the Hindu Endowment Board (HEB) chairman and focus on his executive task as Penang Deputy Chief Minister II.

In making this call, MIC Youth chief T Mohan said Ramasamy should allow other assemblymen to head HEB to enable more Indian leaders to serve the community effectively.

"HEB is merely a statutory body entrusted to safeguard and manage Hindu endowments.

"Ramasamy should not compromise his dignity and integrity as a state excutive council member to head a lower-ranking body

"It is only proper for him to quit immediately as HEB chairman," he said.

Mohan challenged Ramasamy to show his leadership quality by making the right decision immediately to pave the way for another assemblyman to take over HEB.

He said Ramasamy should only assume one position to correct the growing public perception that he was greedy for positions.

He added that being a political novice, Ramasamy, a former academician, has failed to realise that perception was vital in public judgment.

He said Ramasamy should not allow the public to see him wearing too many hats and dominating all positions, while hindering others from holding posts.

Despite strong opposition from the Penang DAP Indian grassroots, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng re-appointed Ramasamy as HEB chairman early this month.

DAP assemblymen Seri Delima's Rayer and Bagan Dalam's Tanasekharan, and PKR's Batu Uban representative S Raveentharan also sit as board commissioners.

Mohan asked why virtually all Indian assemblymen are sitting as board commissioners, likening it to "putting all eggs in a single basket".

He said Ramasamy should be prepared to swap positions to make way for bigger Indian representation in the state government.

"Big responsibilities come with high position. Penang Indians need a full-time Indian executive councillor to serve them, not part-time or past-time politicians.

"It's only fair that Ramasamy steps down as HEB chairman for the sake of the community," Mohan told FMT.

Based on the past four-year record, Mohan, however, is convinced that Ramasamy would eventually fail miserably to perform his tasks as deputy chief minister II.

Ramasamy is in charge of state economic planning, education, human resources, science, technology and innovation.

"He has done nothing worthy in his executive portfolios. He has also not done anything different for the Indian community.

"He has only been a perfect mandore for Guan Eng," Mohan said.

Uthayakumar to contest in general election

KLANG: Hindraf and Human Rights Party leader P Uthayakumar today officially announced that he would be contesting in the 13th general election in both state and parliamentary seats.

The seats are Kota Raja parliamentary seat and Sri Andalas state seat, currently held by Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud from PAS and PKR Dr Xavier Jeyakumar, respectively.

"We have no choice but to stand as independents now. We are going in as the first Hindraf activists. Three years after our release from ISA detention, none of Hindraf leaders have taken up any government positions in the Pakatan states. That's because we want to champion the Indian cause without fear or favour," Uthayakumar told a crowd of about 400 at Padang Chetty at Tengku Kelana in Klang.

"They (Pakatan Rakyat) only want us for our votes. They only want the Indian votes, not solve the Indian problems," he said, expressing clear disappointment that his invitation to the opposition to state its 100-day plan to address Indian issues has been "rejected" twice.

However, Uthayakumar stressed that Barisan Nasional was still its main enemy and it "wants Pakatan to go to Putrajaya, but to bring along seven Hindraf MPs and 14 state assemblymen as check and balance".

‘Jangan letak syarat muzakarah’

Turut hadir Presiden Kongres Kesatuan Pekerja Dalam Perkhidmatan Awam (Cuepacs) Datuk Omar Osman dan Pengarah Jabatan Pembangunan Persekutuan Kelantan Datuk Makhtar Mustafa.

Mengapa tolak Islam?

Beliau mengulas kenyataan Mursyidul Am PAS Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat yang bersetuju mengadakan muzakarah dengan mana-mana badan bukan kerajaan (NGO) termasuk Umno, namun dengan syarat pokok persoalan muzakarah haruslah tertumpu
mengapa menolak Islam.

Bersih 3.0 not clean, says Najib

WASHINGTON: Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak expressed his disappointment over the Bersih 3.0 rally, describing it as "not so bersih" (clean) after having been hijacked by parties with their own agenda to create the perception of instability in the country.

He said the unruly protesters had refused the government's offer of a suitable venue and then broke the law, which resulted in the situation escalating into violence and chaos where even police officers were assaulted.

He compared this with the massive Umno rally held at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium where more than 100,000 people gathered peacefully and without any untoward incident.

Najib was speaking following a luncheon and a Friday prayer session with students and embassy staff.

Also present was the Malaysian Special Envoy to the US, Jamaludin Jarjis.

Earlier, Najib said Malaysian students should look at the world as a stage and take advantage of the enormous opportunities abroad.

"You can maintain your roots but also have a global perspective by acquiring job experience and proficiency in several languages," he said.

He said students should take advantage of internship programmes such as the one initiated by the Malaysia-US Chamber of Commerce based here, in collaboration with Education Malaysia in Washington DC, which opens the door for Malaysian students in the US to intern with Malaysian or American-owned companies in either Malaysia or in the United States over the summer to enhance their learning experience.

"Even if you work in the US, we won't lose you forever, " he said at the luncheon hosted by ambassador Othman Hashim.

"My job is to create as many opportunities – beyond that, it is up to you," the prime minister told

told about 30 Malaysian undergraduate and graduate students currently pursuing engineering, biotech and actuarial science at Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey; Rutgers University, New Jersey; Temple University, Pennsylvania; and Purdue University, Indiana.

Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor are on a private visit to attend the graduation of their son Nor Ashman yesterday.

'Malaysia is for all Malaysians'

The proud dad, in a lighter moment, recalled his rare visit to his son's dorm room in Washington DC, where he was "horrified" when he did not see any books.

Noting his father's concern, Nor Ashman calmed him by reminding him that he did not need many books because he can read them digitally, and that the proof would be in the results.

As many proud parents would do, Najib happily reported that his 21-year-old son surpassed his expectations by completing his Bachelor's degree in International Affairs with Magna cum Laude honours and an above average CGPA of 3.71 from Georgetown University.

The prime minister also touched on the 1Malaysia concept, and emphasised that it was not merely a slogan but an initiative to make Malaysia inclusive – that Malaysia was not only for a particular ethnic group or religion, but for all Malaysians.

He updated Malaysian students on several development projects in Malaysia, including the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) complex launched by Petronas in Pengerang, Johor, in addition to a petrochemical complex undertaken by a Taiwanese company, which is expected to create some 5,000 jobs on a permanent basis and an additional 5,000 jobs on a contractual basis.

Najib also spoke of the River of Life beautification project aimed at transforming the Klang and Gombak rivers into vibrant and liveable waterfronts and to increase the economic viability of the area.

"We have to make the cake bigger and redistribute it to all Malaysians," he pointed out, adding that the Malaysian economy was improving and the government last year collected RM26 billion in tax revenue following assertive measures to collect taxes.

The improving economy has permitted the government to provide financial assistance of RM500 to some four million households earning less than RM3,000 per month.

Reject money politics, Salang tells rural folk

JULAU: Julau MP Joseph Salang has reminded the rural people to reject money politics in the next general election.

He said he had learned that certain people planned to spend a lot of money to buy votes in the next general election to topple Barisan Nasional (BN) incumbents, especially from his Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).

The giver and receiver of money would be penalised upon conviction of the offence, he said when officiating at a housewarming last night at the Rh Laman longhouse in Nanga Nyuyau here and two other longhouses in the constituency.

Salang, who is deputy information, communications and culture minister, said people who used money to win the elections would neglect their constituents later by giving the excuse that they had been paid in advance.

He also said that the opposition elected representatives would have neither the means nor the resources to undertake development projects and programmes, big or small.

On the continuing attempts by a certain local politician to discredit him, Salang said he would not respond to the many allegations made.

"I believe the majority of the people in Julau know the truth. This is based on the increasing pledges of support for the Barisan Nasional and myself," he added.

Penang Umno backs new state BN chief

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Umno has thrown its full support behind Gerakan secretary-general Teng Chang Yeow for his aggressive leadership of the state as the new state Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman.

In a matter of three weeks, Teng has fired up the imagination of the coalition which would be starting up as an underdog in the next general election for the first time since 1969, Penang Umno liaison chairman Zainal Abidin Osman said.

Realising that Teng has now come under attack by Pakatan Rakyat since his appointment as Penang BN chairman, Zainal Abidin said that the former has brought in creativity and a sense of leadership.

The DAP-dominated Pakatan has been criticising Teng online or through the mainstream media hours after his appointment, he said.

Zainal Abidin added that he would like to assure Penangites that Umno is not interested in leading BN at Penang.

The population census shows that there are more non-Malays than Malays in Penang, therefore Umno accepts the notion that a non-Malay (Chinese) be given a chance to lead Penang, he said.

He admitted that previously, there were calls for Umno to take over the reins of BN here and to also assume the chief ministership should BN regains the state.

However, the reality on the ground shows that people are comfortable with a non-Malay leading the state, hence Umno's willingness to allow Gerakan to lead the state, Zainal Abidin said.

He also said that Teng is his own man and Umno has no plans to interfere with his stewardship of the state.

"Teng has shown firm leadership and we are now focusing on regaining the trust of the diverse communities here."

Zainal Abidin expects Pakatan to mow down Teng since the latter is proving to be an obstacle to its strategy of eradicating BN here.

"We realise this, as Pakatan's strategy is to always exploit the weaknesses of its opponents rather than to show its own strengths."

Sooner or later, the people would realise this cheap form of politics, which is to constantly blame others only, Zainal Abidin said, adding that people should be asking what has changed in the state since Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng began his tenure here.

He also said allocating funds to the people is a standard form of governance.

All governments do it either directly or indirectly, he added in reference to the handouts that the state was allocating to the senior citizens, newly-wed couples and families who have their first-borns besides educational incentives for Penang-based students.

He claimed that the BN-led federal government had dispensed RM22.5 billion worth of projects, initiatives and services in Penang since 2008.

"Without such expenditure where local contracters have also benefited, we doubt the state can register economic growth."

Ambiga wins hands down

Bersih 2.0 co-chairperson A Samad Said is asking a very pertinent question – why are the detractors not giving him a hard time and are hell bent on harassing his colleague S Ambiga?

"Why are they only targeting Ambiga, they should choose me too," asked the 77 year-old national laurette.

Samad or better known as Pak Samad has deduced  that the targetted protest against Ambiga could have a "racial or religious" connotation.

"If they continue to only target her, there may be a racial or religious slant which I think is not good," he had said.

Indeed, Samad has spoken the truth. Had it been an Malay or Chinese woman battling for electoral reforms, would politicians like Ibrahim Ali dare clamour that her citizenship be revoked?

Or for that matter would the MCA or Umno remain silent had it been a Chinese or Malay woman whose life was being made a living hell?

Strangely or regrettably, the MIC has chosen to pander to the fancy of Umno, the dominant force of ruling coalition Barisan Nasional. Not a murmur was made by MIC big-wigs to reprimand those who continue to breach the law and harass the former Malaysian Bar president.

Ambiga spearheaded both the Bersih 2.0 and Bersih 3.0 protests demanding for reforms to the nation's electoral system. It was the Bersih 3.0 protest with its hundreds of thousands of turnout  that saw detractors attacking Ambiga.

Post-Bersih 3.0, a series of protests that have taken place in front of Ambiga's residence. On May 10,  a group of burger sellers staged a protest in front of Ambiga's house by distributing 200 burgers.

Malaysia Small and Medium Entrepreneurs Alliance (Ikhlas), the NGO behind the protest said burger stall owners had suffered losses amounting to RM200,000 due to the April 28 rally.

On May 15,  a group of 15 army veterans carried out butt flexing exercises facing her house. In reaction to the protest she said that it was a "targeted and planned harassment".

Ambiga had said that since people know where she lives, they have constantly been coming to her house asking for free burgers and merely standing at her gate calling out her name.

On May 18,  there was an attempted break-in at Ambiga's office in Damansara. She did not rule out intimidation tactics to scare her from pursuing the Bersih cause for clean and fair elections.

Protect the rakyat, stop the tasteless humour

While Ambiga's privacy continues to be infringed upon, the police does not find it troubling enough to warrant action.

Instead, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar had declared there was nothing wrong with protesting in front of her house as these protesters did not trespass on private property.

Likewise, the police continues to downplay the attempted break-in at her office. Ambiga in her police report had mentioned that two men on a motorcycle have been following her for several days.

Would the police's reaction be the same had Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's house been the target of those unhappy with his leadership which is riddles with corruption, nepotism and cronyism?

Or is it a case of 'pilih bulu' or choosing whom to protect based on their skin colour?

Khalid's comment that it was not wrong for protesters to demonstrate in front of Ambiga's house is full of ambiguity. Is creating nuisance outside the residence of a person not unlawful? Also, is it unlawful to sexually harass an individual, albeit the distance involved?

If it is not, then the time has come for such acts to be criminalised. Khalid has to stop making a fool of both himself and the police force.

When non-governmental organisation WargaAMAN said it would set up stall outside Khalid's house in Ampang on May 20 to distribute thosai for free to the public in an attempt to promote the dish, Khalid found it humorous enough to order a 'thosai telur' and suggested that the stall be set up at a nearby field since his house was not a suitable location.

Khalid clearly lacks wisdom in discerning the gravity of an issue. Trying to display his sense of humour which was tasteless at best, he has only reinforced the people's belief that the police force is on a tight leash of the 'powers that be'.

As for premier Najib, how can he expect the rakyat's mandate to rule the country when as a leader who claims that he puts "people first" above all else, he is not the least concerned about the threats and harassment being made against a member of the public?

Najib has also failed the rakyat when he opted to 'play' spectator each time Umno and Malay right wing Perkasa demanded that Ambiga's citizenship be recalled.

Whatever the case, Ambiga wins hands down

When she led the rakyat in the Bersih 2.0 and Bersih 3.0 rallies respectively, Ambiga's intention was far from being hailed as a hero. She was perturbed by the hanky-pankies taking place via the electoral process and decided it was time for a clean-up.

But her guts have scared the politicians, espcially those with much at stake, hence the dirty move to deter her from pursuing her agenda of pushing for free and fair elections.

Have those underhand tactics worked? Hardly. The spin-off effect is that the rakyat has realised the sincerity behind her call for electoral reforms.

And unlike Khalid and her detractors, Ambiga has revealed immense maturity when she asked WargaAMAN not to proceed with its 'free thosai' event.

Ambiga knows only too well this is not going to solve the already tensed situation.  Besides, such actions transgressed the law and amounted to being a public nuisance.

"I strongly urge all to refrain from these acts which infringe on the privacy of an individual. I urge those who are proposing to give the thosai to make them and distribute them to charity.

"Everyone must work towards making Malaysia a better place for all and we must be respectful of private spaces," she told FMT.

Suffice to say that therein lies the difference between a woman who is out to fight for the rakyat and a top cop who takes dictates from politicians.

Intimidation on Ambiga continues because she is INDIAN

MALACCA: An Opposition high tea programme in Merlimau turned ugly when hundreds of youths turned up and pelted those attending the function with eggs and stones.
The youths also surrounded and damaged the vehicles of at least two people, one of which belonged to a DAP assemblyman.
The youths had gathered there after hearing that Bersih co-chairman Datuk S. Ambiga was invited to give a speech at the ceramah which was supposed to begin at 5pm yesterday. However, she did not turn up.
The youths, all clad in red T-shirts, hurled abuses at several local community leaders who came for the function held at a field here.
The group shouted Bersih Bodoh (Bersih is stupid) an! d Ha lau (Drive them out).
About 20 riot policemen arrived to cordon off the area and provided a safe route to those attending the ceramah, while other policemen helped to separate the group and the crowd.
However, when the ceramah ended at 7pm, the crowd began to attack several cars.
DAP state assemblyman Tey Kok Kiew said his car was ambushed by the boisterous group while he was driving out to the main road.
Both my side mirrors were broken and my car was hit with eggs and stones, he said after lodging a report at the Merlimau police station last night.
Another victim Lui Poh Siong, 42, said the drivers side window and left rear window of his car were smashed.
The ceramah was attended by some 300 community members, who arrived using alternative and village roads.
A police officer later confirmed that Ambiga had not turned up at the event, which was attended by PKR Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin.

It is good that the Malays and Mamak continue to intimidate Ambiga.  This clearly confirm to us that certain groups of Malay and Mamak will seek our blood and confirm that UMNO will make use of PDRM, Armed Forces, Rela, Perkasa, Pekida and Mat Rempit to obstruct PKR from forming the next government.  Win or lose UMNO will NOT LET GO.
Today we are certain that the brain washing of the Melayu and Mamak are beyond repair.  BTN, Mara, Malay NGOs and Government Servants are taught to go against the Rakyat.  These are lessons taught through the years of Mahathir, Pak Lah and now Najib's era.  But I know destiny can change when the leaders walk opposite direction plus there is karma in these three leaders hand that need to be cleanse before their death. These three leaders are responsible for the run down and corruption of this country.
Many racial talks, action and rampage does not only happens in Malaysia.  Government Servants carry out their duties also on the same line.  There are many Malaysian Embassy and Consulate office who also do not help our Malaysian Chinese, Indians and other races fairly.
There was a case of an emergency where a Malaysian Chinese boy who wanted to return home immediately because his dad was very, very sick.  He rushed to the Embassy whereby a Malay staff told him that her working hours is over.  That was only 3pm.  He ap! proached another staff and got the same reply.  The poor boy just collapse and cried at the staircase not knowing what to do.  Then in come along two Malay girls who approached the same staff that he spoke earlier whereby they were entertain.  The two Malay girls waited and within 45 mins got their paper work done.  The Chinese boy was surprised and approached the staff and was rudely told to come back on Monday.  Whereby the boy replied that he wants to catch the earliest flight home because his dad was dying.  The Malay staff just walked away.  Just then the Secretary General walked in and saw a confusing, red-eyed and angry Chinese boy.  She approached him and was told what happened.  The Secretary General called and reprimanded the Malay staff who beg not to be sent back to Malaysia and promised she would help all Malaysian Citizen regardless of their race in future.  The Chinese boy managed to leave the country the same day and came home in time to see and say good-bye to his dad.
