A timely message from the Intergalactic System Busters!

"You are living in a time when opportunities for self-empowerment, expanded awareness, and spiritual growth appear to be unlimited." ~ The Pleiadians.

"What the Pleiadians are saying is that we inherit all the abilities of our ancestors. We've all had ancestors who were traumatized and never processed their trauma because they didn't understand it. Now, today, with the energies increasing, we're cleaning the [human] gene pool by [replaying] all of the traumas our ancestors went through, as well as all their joys and victories... During the period from about 1987 through the end of 2012 is a time for humankind to build a frequency of healing so that we can make a new paradigm. As we bridge the gap from the Piscean to the Aquarian Age, everything [we think, say or do] is registered genetically to sum up the age and to carry a frequency or information into the next Age. They say it comes down to real simple choices - fear or love."

Penstrukturan semula industri air

Ex-IGP’s appoinment renders panel a ‘sham’

KUALA LUMPUR: Polls watchdog Bersih 3.0 and opposition leaders today described the independent panel set up to probe police violence during the April 28 poll rally a sham.

Critics said the announcement made earlier this evening that former inspector-general of police Hanif Omar would head the panel had undone Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's reform credentials.

Bersih 3.0 steering committee member Wong Chin Huat said the outcome of the panel's investigation into alleged police violence against media personnel and rally participants was as good as done – "that the police would be made to look innocent" given Hanif's prejudice towards the movement.

Hanif had claimed in the past that the coalition for polls reform, backed by the federal opposition bloc Pakatan Rakyat, had communist elements and was aiming to overthrow the government through a coup, an allegation that the latter denied.

The statement was made before thousands thronged the city streets less than two weeks ago in an otherwise peaceful rally that turned chaotic after police used force to disperse the crowd.

"That is as much independence that you can get from the Najib administration," Wong told FMT.

'Panel is not independent'

Opposition leaders echoed his sentiment, calling Hanif's appointment an "embarrassment."

"He has been bashing Bersih from the beginning. All I can say is that the panel is not independent," PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, who is the most vocal opposition leader to back the polls reform group, told FMT.

DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang in his twitter posting called on Hanif to reject the offer "after his horrific support of Najib's wild allegation about a coup d'etat or the Bersih 3 panel would lose all credibility."

PAS vice-president Mahfuz Omar, speaking to FMT, said Putrajaya's move to appoint the former IGP made clear the ruling coalition's intention to cover up the violence and pointed to the government's refusal to allow observers from the United Nations to conduct the probe.

Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said Putrajaya's rejection of the proposal was a matter of principle – that Malaysia was against "outside interference" in its affairs, an excuse often used to deny foreign observation of the elections.

Other members of the panel were former Chief Judge of Borneo Steve Shim, Sinar Harian managing editor Hussamuddin Yaacub, legal adviser to Media Chinese International Liew Peng Chuan, Petronas corporate
affairs senior general manager Medan Abdullah and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia psychology Prof Dr Ruszmi Ismail.

No representatives from the Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) were included in the lineup despite strong calls by both Bersih 3.0 and opposition leaders to include them.

Wong and Mahfuz said the exclusion only strengthened accusations of possible discrepancies in the probe.

  • Bekas ketua hakim Borneo Tan Sri Steve Sim.
  • Editor Pengurusan Sinar Harian Datuk Hussamuddin Yaacub.
  • Penasihat undang-undang Media Chinese International Liew Peng Chuan.
  • Pengurus besar kanan hal ehwal korporat Petronas Datuk Medan Abdullah.
  • Ahli psikologi Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Prof Dr Ruszmi Ismail.

Hanif Omar leads Bersih 3.0 probe panel...

Former inspector-general of police Hanif Omar has been appointed the head of the independent panel to probe incidents of violence during the Bersih 3.0 rally.

Five others on the six-member panel will compris! e academ icians, former judges and media presentatives.

Hanif was the fourth and longest serving police chief in Malaysia.

bersih 3 rally 090512 05 crowd at jalan tun perakHe had recently courted controversy in claiming that communist sympathisers who were active demonstrators in the 1970s were involved in the Bersih 3.0 rally.

"The tactics of using provocateurs to cause the demonstrators to clash with police and to bring children along in the hope they would get injured were tactics learnt from past pro-communist demonstrations," he was quoted as saying.

He was also criticised for supporting Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's claim that Bersih 3.0 was a coup d'état attempt.

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, who made the annoucement today, said the terms of reference would be decided within the next few days when the panel holds its first meeting.
He said the other members of the panel are:
  • Former Chief Judge of Borneo Steve Sim
  • Sinar Harian managing editor Hussamuddin Yaacub
  • Media Chinese International (Sin Chew group) legal adviser Liew Peng Chuan
  • Petronas corporate affairs senior general manager Medan Abdullah
  • Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia psychology Prof Dr Ruszmi Ismail
No lawyers, no Suhakam reps

Hishammuddin said that the purpose of the panel is to collect evidence and conduct investigations in order to unravel the truth behind the incident.

NONEHe added that should investigations be solely conducted by the home ministry and the police, there will be concerns over the independence of the process.

"Those who claims that they were victims, who claims that there are no avenues to speak up, can raise their grouses through the panel," he said.

On whether foreign police agencies will be roped in to help, Hishammuddin replied that this will be decided by the panel.

On why there are no lawyers or Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) representatives on the panel, Hishammuddin said the Bar Council was already busy with Bersih 3.0 related matters.

He said that it was up to the panel to decide if it requires Suhakam representation on the panel.

Ambiga 'deeply horrified'

In an immediate reaction, Bersih coalition co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan said she is "deeply horrified by Hanif's appointment", especially after his recent comments on Bersih 3.0.
NONE"I think he is a bit paranoid in personality, we will certainly object to his appointment. We need somebody independent," she said.

Ambiga said that as a lawyer, Hanif should know that his previous comments would immediately disqualify him and all the other former IGPs who made some extreme statements from sitting on the panel.

"We trust that he will do the right thing and decline the appointment.

"In any event it is our view that the government ought to have appointed Suhakam and accepted the invitation from the UN rapporteur to assist the inquiring panel," she said.

In another immediate reaction, veteran opposition lawmaker Lim Kit Siang said Hanif should decli! ne his a ppointment.

"He should decline the appointment after his horrific support of Najib's wild allegation on
coup d'état attempt or Bersih 3.0 panel will lose all credibility," he said in a tweet.- malaysiakini

Mariam Mokhtar on the Scorpene's Sting...

[Reproduced from Malaysiakini in the public interest]

  • Mariam Mokhtar
  • 11:16AM May 7, 2012
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak sealed his own fate, 11 years ago at a meeting to discuss the Scorpene submarine purchase. The date was July 14, 2001.

As any history student will tell you, the storming of the Bastille in Paris, on the morning of July 14, 1789, signalled the beginning of the French revolution. Every year, the French celebrate their National or Bastille Day, on July 14.

From now on, Malaysians may also attach some significance to July 14. It might not be the start of a Malaysian revolution, but it was on July 14, 2001, that Najib held a meeting with DCNI, the subsidiary of the French shipmaker DCN.

Najib, who was the defence minister at the time, had allegedly demanded that the French pay US$ 1 billion (RM3 billion) to the Malaysian company Perimekar, as a condition for meeting him.

NONEThese details were divulged by the French investigators for Suaram, and form only the tip of the iceberg. Their list of witnesses includes Najib, Abdul Razak Baginda and the current Defence Minister Zahid Hamidi. All are required to testify in Paris.

It has not been a good week for the PM. The government's response to the Bersih sit-down protest has attracted international condemnation. In the week which coincided with World Press Freedom Day, his policemen have been accused of brutality and his administration has been villified for media censorship.

Independent foreign observers have criticised Najib for mishandling the peaceful protest, and denying the rakyat their fundamental right to freedom of assembly.

Two newspapers face legal action; the New Straits Times, by an Australian senator, Nicholas Xenophon, because the paper libeled him, and Utusan Malaysia, which ran a front-page story that the Opposition politician Azmin Ali was involved in a tryst.

Diminishing support

With the French court case looming, corruption scandals rocking his cabinet and further delays to GE13, Najib fears that support for him and his party will diminish further.

Is it any wonder that a few days ago, Najib tried to distract us, by claiming that Bersih's sit-down protest was a plot to topple his government?

Najib's opposition to Bersih 3.0 is a clear indication that Umno knows that it cannot win a clean election. He knows he cannot allow a free and fair election.
That explains the concerted effort by Umno and the Election Commission (EC) to cheat. In desperation, Najib has accused Bersih 3.0 of wanting to turn Dataran Merdeka into Tahrir Square.

In a press conference last week, Suaram confirmed that the French judicial probe had evolved from a "civil complaint" into a "criminal investigation."

The French lawyer acting for Suaram, Joseph Breham said: "Investigations so far have provided sufficient evidence to point our finger at Malaysian officials in this (court) hearing."

NONESuaram secretariat member and lawyer Fadiah Nadwa Fikri said, "....The parties involved in the scandal would soon be charged in the French criminal court. It's going to be bigger than it already is now".

Suaram secretary-general Cynthia Gabriel (left) called the Scorpene scandal, "the Great Malaysian Robbery" with several companies, including the pilgrimage fund (Lembaga Tabung Haji) and the military servicemen's pension fund (Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera) being used to obscure the money trail.

Gabriel said, "The Malaysian and French people have clearly been misled, cheated and robbed of their monies through blatant corruption and mismanagement of funds in the name of national safety and security."

The former finance director of DCN, Gerarde Philippe Maneyas, alleged that Malaysian officials in the deal had been bribed.

With the introduction of new laws in France and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Convention in 2002, bribes made to foreign officials are considered a criminal offence. Previously, these bribes were tax-deductible.

As a result of these laws and the OECD, all documentation relating to arms deals would replace reference to the payment of "commissions" with "payment to service providers."

Terasasi surfaces

The French inquiry also revealed the presence of a previously unknown company, Terasasi, which is owned by the PM's former aide, Abdul Razak Baginda.

abdul razak baginda pc 201108 06Baginda (left) also owned Perimekar, and both these companies received several million euros in commissions and kickbacks. Baginda's wife and father are also linked to Perimekar and Terasasi.

Interestingly, French investigators found an invoice from Terasasi to a French company, Thint Asia International, dated Aug 28, 2004 for 359,450 euros (RM1.43 million) with a handwritten note saying: "Razak wants it in a hurry." Needless to say, the race is on to discover which "Razak" this refers to.

Despite the rapid pace of development by the French investigators, members of Najib's cabinet have remained eerily silent.

One thing is clear. Najib cannot be non-committal in future press conferences and abruptly terminate them when any reference is made to Scorpene. He cannot use that old trick of saying he will go the mosque and swear on the Quran. He cannot avoid the French subpoena without risking an international arrest warrant.

Despite the internal power struggles in the upper echelons of Umno, none of those who wish to be PM has appeared to lodge the first knife in his back. Perhaps, they all realise that despite Najib's unpopularity, they have to band together to save their skin.

Najib faces a dilemma. He needs the support of Umno members so he can remain as PM, because it is said that a head of state enjoys immunity while he is in office. Once he stands down, he becomes another ordinary person and will be prosecuted, for any crimes committed.

Najib probably rues the day he entertained the French on July 14, 2001. Even Swiss bank accounts and exile to a "friendly" country are no guarantees of freedom.

Hanif pengerusi panel penasihat bebas

PUTRAJAYA: Kerajaan hari ini mengumumkan pelantikan enam anggota Panel Penasihat Bebas bagi mendapatkan gambaran sebenar mengenai kejadian rusuhan di Kuala Lumpur berikutan penganjuran Bersih 3.0 pada 28 April lepas.

Mereka terdiri daripada bekas Ketua Polis Negara Hanif Omar selaku pengerusi panel, bekas Ketua Hakim Borneo Steve Sim, Pengarah Urusan Kumpulan Akhbar Sinar Harian Husammuddin Yaacub, Penasihat Undang-undang Kumpulan Akhbar Sin Chiew, Liew Peng Chuan, Pengurus Besar Kanan Hal Ehwal Korporat Petronas Medan Abdullah, dan Pakar Psikologi Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Prof Dr Ruszmi Ismail.

Penang passes local polls law

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed the Local Government Elections (Penang Island and Province Wellesley) Enactment 2012 here today.

Hence, barring any legal challenges from the Barisan Nasional federal government or the Election Commission, local government elections must be held in Penang within 180 days from the day the enactment has been enforced.

State executive councillor in charge of local government and traffic management affairs, Padang Kota assemblyman Chow Kon Yeow has said that the state government would attempt to obtain a pre-emptive court declaration that the enactment was not ultra vires the Federal Constitution to compel the EC to conduct the local polls.

The bill was not opposed by the 11 Barisan Nasional opposition members from Umno, who were all not present in the House when it was passed. Neither were they in when the bill was up for debate in the first, second and third readings.

With the legislation, the DAP-helmed Pakatan Rayat state government has taken a giant step forward to restore third vote process as promised during the last general election.

When talking about the bill to the press after the opening of the party new state headquarters, Wisma DAP, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has that DAP also stood for 'delivery as promised.'

In his winding up debate on the enactment, Chow suggested for both the island and mainland councils – MPPP and MPSP – to be restructured, transformed and reformed to streamline the power dynamic between the state and federal government.

"This would ensure the people benefitted whichever political alliance forms the federal or state government," he told the House.

DAP's Komtar assemblyman Ng Wei Aik has suggested that the current  RM1,300 allowance for municipal councillors was not proportionate with their heavy workload, responsibilities and high number of meetings.

To this, Chow said that the state government hoped to fix a better rate to enable candidates elected to be full-time municipal councillors.

On a question by DAP's Jawi assemblyman Tan Beng Huat on why candidates needed to be locals, Chow explained that the state government wanted municipal councillors who knew well about local area's "in-and-outs"

Chow concurred with DAP's Padang Lalang Tan Cheong Heng that the local government elections should be held despite the possibility of Pakatan not securing a 100 per cent victory.

"It's our stand to respect the spirit of the elections despite not being guaranteed of win every time," he said.

Progressive step

Meanwhile, Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) said the enactment was a progressive step to pave way for the return of third vote.

Its Penang branch coordinator Lee Hui Fei said the EC, which previously turned down Penang's request for local elections, can no longer ignore and escape from its responsibility to administer elections.

"The enactment removes questions on whether local elections can be held legally and constitutionally," she said in an e-statement.

Noting that the legal obstacles regarding a federal suspension since 1965 no longer applies for Penang, she stressed that the EC must respect the state's right to exempt its local councils from the anti-democratic Section 15 of the Local Government Act 1976.

"Suaram hopes that the EC would accede to Penang's request," insisted Lee.

She said the Pakatan government should now intensify its commitment in the democratisation of local governments and empowerment of local communities.

Stand and deliver, Khalid!

SHAH ALAM: Selangor MIC Youth members today staged a peaceful protest in front of the state secretariat (SUK) demanding for free education at higher education institutions.

They submitted a 10-point memo to Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim, urging him to keep to his 2008 general election manifesto to provide free education should Pakatan win Selangor.

The memorandum was received by Khalid's press secretary Hazuri Ismail, who promised to looking into the demands.

"We are disappointed with the state government which has failed to provide free education at the state level as promised," said Shanker Raj Ayanger, the state MIC Youth chairman.

The three higher education centres under the Pakatan state government are University Selangor (Unisel), National Institute of Valuation (Inspen) and Selangor International Islamic University College (KUIS).

"It has been four years since their election victory and until today the state government has done little or nothing to fulfill its promise," said Shanker.

He also lashed out at the state government for shifting the blame on to BN for it inability to provide free education.

"This is utter rubbish. The state government has all the means to provide free education in their higher education institutions," said Shanker.

He added that MIC Youth is eagerly waiting for Khalid's response. He challenged Pakatan leaders to provide free education in Pakatan-ruled states instead.

"Instead of calling for the federal government to abolish PTPTN loans, I urge Pakatan to implement their pledge to provide free education at the state level first ," said Shanker.

The demands

Among the other demands in the MIC Youth memo are:

  • Abolish WiFi fees in I-City (MIC claims the state government charges student RM100 per semester)
  • Abolish health fees for students in Unisel, Inspen and KUIS
  • Ensure transparency when allocating scholarships to students
  • Upgrade sports utilities in Unisel Shah Alam
  • Provide free shuttle service for students to fulfill their religious obligations at their respective places of worship
  • Allocate vegetarian food facilities inside the campus
  • Tamil be to implemented as an elective subject
  • Adequate facilities for associations and clubs to carry out their activities
  • Upgrade the quality of lecturers and professors

MIC national Youth secretary, C Sivaarraajh, who took part in the protest said that Pakatan has the responsibility to cater for students education.

He also warned Pakatan leaders to keep away from students and desist from feeding them with inaccurate information.

In another development, MIC central working committee member, KP Samy, questioned the Selangor MB's motive to offer legal aide to all those detained by police during the Bersih 3.0 rally.

"How come he did not do same for all the Hindraf supporters who were detained on Nov 25, 2007 during the Hindraf rally?

"It smacks of racism as the case was ongoing when he took office. He could have easily extended the same offer" said Samy, who provided financial help out his own pocket to several of those who arrested and charged for taking part in an 'Illegal' assembly.

Lynas Plant Approval After GE 13 if UMNO Wins?

Report from Reuters:

Lynas officials say they are confident the plant will win approval in coming months. Opponents suspect the government is waiting until after the election to approve the plant at a less sensitive time.
"The timing could be all too convenient," said Fuziah Salleh, a local opposition member of parliament who has thrown her weight behind the protest movement. "Basically it is a delay tactic until approval."

GEBENG, Malaysia (Reuters) - The expensive machinery lies silent, idling as Malaysia's government weighs a delicate decision to allow shipments of raw material to arrive from Australia and finally start operations at the wo! rld's la rgest rare earths plant outside China.

At the industrial estate on the country's east coast, 20 or so protesters gathered in the searing afternoon heat have begun a chant. "No to Lynas. Lynas go home!".

The handful of demonstrators seems an unlikely obstacle to plans by Australia's Lynas Corp to build its company-making 2.5 billion ringgit ($ 800 million) plant, seen as crucial to challenging China's near monopoly on the production of rare earths, used in items ranging from smartphones to smart bombs.

But the expanding protest movement they represent, feeding off broader frustrations with Malaysia's government as elections loom, has already delayed the project by eight months and cast a shadow over its future.

The resistance - fed by social networks and Malaysia's increasingly lively independent online media - also raises broader questions over the global expansion of an industry that has created huge environmental problems in China, which currently accounts for about 95 percent of global supply.

"Western countries don't want it. Why should we in Malaysia?," said Norizan Mokhtar, who lives less than 10 km (6 miles) from the plant in the industrial area of Gebeng, close to fishing villages and Kuantan, a city of half a million people.

"My youngest is six, the effects might not be seen now but in the future. We eat fish every day, what if there is radiation?"

She's afraid controls on the plant will become slack after the first few years.

Lynas has been plagued by delays and controversy in Malaysia since it broke ground on the plant two years ago with the aim of easing China's grip on the supply of rare earths and capitalizing on rising prices for the material.

Its share price has halved since early last year as investors worry that it will lose out in the race to feed surging world demand.

Lynas has orders covering its first 10 years of production. Japan, the world's biggest consumer of rare earths, is counting on Lynas to supply 8,500 tonnes a year by early 2013.

"Our customers are waiting," Mashal Ahmad, the managing director of the Lynas plant, told reporters during a tour of the plant for media last month.

"We have nothing to hide," he said, adding that "too much misinformation" had been spread about the company.

Temasek’s triple personality bodes well for returns — John Foley

HONG KONG, May 9 — Temasek is turning into a financial chimera. Where that mythical beast was part lion, goat and serpent, the Singaporean fund combines aspects of a hedge fund, private equity house and investment bank. That combination sounds good for returns, though it might not sit well with Temasek's political ties.

First, consider Temasek's recent opportunistic. It sold US$ 2.5 billion (RM7.5 billion) of shares in two China banks on May 3, just weeks after buying US$ 2.3 billion of shares in another. Temasek reportedly flipped China Construction Bank shares for 20 per cent more than it paid last November — which in turn was 20 per cent below where the shares were trading when it sold in the previous July.

The fund has also shown a taste for private-equity style financial engineering. Temasek is kingmaker in a proposed US$ 7.2 billion takeover of Indonesia's Bank Danamon by Singaporean bank DBS, which would leave the fund with 40 per cent of the combined group. Last year's exchangeable bond, convertible into part of Temasek's 18 per cent stake in Standard Chartered, reflected more cleverness than necessity.

Finally, there are shades of an investment bank. Temasek has hired big-hitting bankers like UBS finance director John Cryan, whose influence may explain the chance of gear. So too may its investment-bank-like pay, which leans heavily on performance. Temasek even claws back past bonuses when the fund fails to meet its internal hurdle rate, as happened in 2010.

This combination could be just what's needed. Temasek's return to the finance ministry, its sole shareholder, was below five per cent in 2010, its last reported period — compared with a 20-year average of 15 per cent. Without healthy returns, it's hard to justify the US$ 155 billion fund's existence. Singapore already has a bigger sovereign piggy bank in the form of foreign reserve fund GIC.

But Temasek's cleverness may have limits. The DBS and Danamon merger has already created a nationalist debate in Indonesia which Temasek's role as a sovereign investor has only inflamed. Regulators are now proposing a cap on foreigners' stakes in local banks. If Temasek does well, its fund managers will get the credit; flunk, and it's politicians who will have to clean up. — Reuters

Tunku Aziz to be dropped as senator

PETALING JAYA: DAP vice-president, Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim, has confirmed that his open condemnation of the Bersih 3.0 rally has cost him his Senator's position.

Rumours had surfaced earlier that Tunku Abdul Aziz would be booted from his post and that his term ending May 30 would not be renewed as a result of him breaking ranks with his party leadership by publicly opposing the rally for clean and fair elections.

A senatorship is for three years with a maximum of two terms. The 78-year-old Tunku Abdul Aziz is the first senator from the DAP.

Just a few days before the rally was set to take place on April 28, Tunku Abdul Aziz had said that the event would encourage Malaysians to "break the law".

He also questioned the Bersih 3.0 organisers' insistance that the rally would be a peaceful one and noted that many such rallies began with a similar intent but ended up in violence and chaos.

Tunku Abdul Aziz's words rang true on April 28 when police and protesters clashed an hour after the rally began.

In the aftermath, he appeared to pin the responsibility of the violence on Bersih and was quoted saying that they "are not a group of angels descended from heaven who are completely blameless."

Tunku Abdul Aziz has acknowleged that these statements were what led to him losing his Senator post.

"Yes it is true that I will not be re-elected," he told Bernama. "It is merely a small sacrifice."

Tunku Abdul Aziz joined DAP in 2008 and was elected as a Senator the following year as part of the Penang state government quota.

Penang chief minister and DAP secretary-general, Lim Guan Eng, had earlier reprimanded him for placing the party in an "embarrasing position" with his comments on Bersih 3.0.

RM15k 'ang pow' for Felda settlers, but, how much is Isa Samad's share...

With the 'windfall' for settlers finally announced amid much media fanfare, PAS is urging prime minister Najib Razak to come clean on the other 'windfall': the profit reaped by Felda chairman Isa Samad (left) following the controversial listing of Felda Global Venture Holding.

The outspoken chairman of PAS-linked whistleblower group National Felda Settlers' Children Association (ANAK) chairman Mazlan Aliman has urged Najib to reveal the source of the RM1,689 billion to be distributed to Felda settlers nationwide.

"How much cronies are paying to Isa Samad, Sabri Ahmad (FGVH president), his [Najib's] brother Nazir Razak (CIMB chairman), his advisor Omar Ong and others?" he asked.

Najib announced that each family in the Felda settlers community and staff will get RM15,000 in three instalments: RM5,000 for settlers (phase 1), RM5,000 for their wives (phase 2), and RM5,000 for the second-generation settlers (phase 3). Saying it would require RM1.689 billion for the exercise, Najib said the money came from Felda's own strength. Najib also announced a two-and-half month bonus to all Felda employees.

Saying it was never against incentives for settlers, ANAK however questioned the sudden cash handout.

"Why now, after 55 years Felda is established. Is it a political drama due to concerns about settlers' change of attitude towards Barisan Nasional?" asked Mazlan .

PAS vice president Salahuddin Ayub said a proper comparison can be made if Isa's share of t! he 'wind fall' was revealed, to find out whether settlers had indeed got "a windfall or a pittance".

"The announcement is a clear sign that election is near. I am not dismissing the possibility that the parliament will be dissolved in the coming days," said the Kubang Kerian member of parliament.

Harakahdaily earlier reported about speculation that Najib would dissolve the parliament before May 14 to pave way for the 13th general election latest by early June.- harakahdaily

Kroni Umno untung besar.

Hilang dividen 15% setiap tahun

cheers.

Najib To Promote Himself At The London Dome – All At The Taxpayer’s Expense!

Sarawak Report

Big enough stage for Najib Razak? Maybe – but not large enough for Bersih 3.0!

The Malaysian Prime Minister, Najib Razak, has hired London's top venue to stage a self-promoting event, all at the cost of taxpayers, next week!

The O2 Arena, known locally as the Dome, is one of the UK capital's most eye-catching modern landmarks and it will feature as a key location for the up-coming Olympics.

It is also frequently used to host major pop concerts, such as the fateful Michael Jackson final tour.

However, on Monday Najib Razak has commandeered it for an event starring himself. 'An Evening With The Prime Minister'!

According to the London High Commission website all Malaysian's living in the UK are invited to attend what is billed as a free event, with food and and drink provided and cultural entertainment on offer throughout.

Sarawakians, for whom the fund for hard core rural poverty could only afford RM3.47million this year were left aghast.

"Why is Najib spending this sort of money on a foreign PR event"? asked one bemused London student.  "Does he think it plays back home, because hardly any Malaysians living in London are allowed to vote?  The only people who can vote are government workers and they are forced to vote BN anyway!

Another told Sarawak Report

"This is a party political electioneering event that will have cost millions to stage. It is not correct to spend public money on this sort of PR event and I don't think people will be impressed that it is being held in Britain either.  Perhaps he just does not dare hold a rally in KL anymore after the turn out for Berish 3.0!"

'Hired audience' to be bussed in from all over the UK !

'Unmissable opportunity" – according to the promoters from the High Commission!

Even more scandalous, Sarawak Report can reveal that the High Commission is also arranging for free transport and provisions for students to attend the event from all over the UK!

Students from as far away as Edinburgh University up in Scotland have been urged to attend in a highly organised effort by diplomats.  The roundup is presumably designed to avoid too many empty front row seats that might otherwise be picked up by cameras beaming back pictures to the censored media in Malaysia.

An insider email has been passed to Sarawak Report, revealing the scale of the operation:

"The Coordintor for the entire event is the Malaysian High Commission in London. They are targeting 1000 Malaysians to join in the gathering.

Travel by Coach to London will be provided. Refreshments and a Dinner pack will be served on the Coach. All branches are asked to confirm attendee numbers so that we will know whether to book one of two Coaches. Please pass this message to your local groups(?) and other Malaysians. Get back to me with the total number.

Ideally, let me know by Tuesday 8th May so that i can submit the Budget and total number of attendees to the High Commission.

This is not a formal gathering – the PM will just say a few words and will then mingle with the crowd throughout the evening.

if anyone is interested , please pass me your name, phone number and University. Thanks [email to student organisers]

Demonstrators likely!

The masked protest in support of Bersih 3.0 gained about 1,000 people in London last week for free! Clearly, the PM is not so confident he can round up that level of support without free food and transport

The irony of the attempt to buy in supporters for the Prime Minister is highlighted by the fact that just two weekends ago the Bersih 3.0 support rally in London achieved at least the same numbers without any incentives save a desire by Malaysians to support democracy and end corruption and the theft of public money.

On this occasion the same students who are now being rounded up by BN were BANNED from attending, on pain of losing their education grants.

As a result many of the demonstrators were forced to wear masks.

It is highly likely that a similar peaceful protest will develop outside the O2 Arena, although the Malaysian Embassy have a record of attempting to hire security guards to prevent legitimate demonstrations, even in London.

Friends of BN UK

Sarawak Report can also reveal that the Prime Minister will again be using public money to promote BN's party interests by hosting an event for the organisation Friends of Barisan National UK, which he set up in July last year on his last visit to London.

The purpose of the group, according to its website, appears to be primarily to encourage trade links with UK organisations.  A number of British public figures, including Prof Lord Desei, Lord Parry Mitchell, Lord Sheikh of Cornhill and Dr Dawn Gibbons MBE have been co-opted as 'Patrons' for the society.

They are listed on the FBN UK website alongside the Malaysian Foreign Minister, Hanifah Aman, whom Sarawak Report has linked to the timber corruption involving his brother, the Chief Minister of Sabah, Musa Aman.

Friends of Barisan National UK – the Patrons

Sarawak Report has now written to each of these UK patrons to ask on what grounds they have agreed to support a political organisation that in the last week alone has been responsible for gassing and bludgeoning peaceful demonstrators asking for free and fair elections; caught out secretly censoring the BBC, Al Jazeerah and CNN as well as being responsible for criminally defaming an Australian senator, who observed the human rights violations by police at the Bersih 3.0 rally (see previous stories).

Our letter, which has been supported by Suaram International, also questions whether it is appropriate for a party political organisation to declare its main object to be to provide "valuable business contacts" and trade opportunities to its members and to set out to be the "leading organisation" for trade between the two countries! Surely the government should be providing a level playing field for trade and not trying to keep it exclusively for BN cronies?:

'"Through the FBN UK, members have the opportunity to develop valuable business contacts within the British Malaysian community and to exchange ideas and information with a cross section of business, trade and governmental interests. FBN UK shall act as Malaysia's and UK's leading organisation helping both Malaysian and British companies grow and develop their business in both Malaysia and UK.

Free crowd – Bersih marchers in London were forced to wear masks

In case the UK patrons were unaware of the case, our letter also alerted them to the recent trade scandal surrounding the Scopene submarine purchase in France and reminded them of the 'Aid for Arms' scandal between the Thatcher Government and Najib Razak, when Malaysia's Minister of Defence.

Najib Razak may have been encouraged by the UK Prime Minister David Cameron's 'pat on the back' for supposedly abolishing the ISA legislation allowing imprisonment without trial.

However, Malaysians in Britain have been active in informing officials here that such window-dressing is by no means the end of repression in Malaysia, let alone political corruption.

The events of Bersih 3.0 have proved their point.

Najib's people are working hard to keep as much of his schedule under wraps as possible, however they should brace themselves for protests here in London none the less.

The ball is at your feet, Teck Ghee

FMT LETTER: From Dr Chandra Muzaffar, vian e-mail

It is a pity that Dr Lim Teck Ghee has chosen to ignore some of the arguments and analyses I had presented in my earlier reply, and instead has clung stubbornly to his dogmatic position on the political scenario in the country today.

An example of this is his warped reasoning on the use of the words "irrefutable fact" in my article 'Bersih and the Quest for Human Rights (May 2, 2012)' which triggered his initial response.

My argument in that article was that since the ISA has been abolished, certain fetters upon the freedom of expression removed, and some other democratic changes initiated, "the space and scope for the expression and articulation of human rights has been expanded and enhanced as never before."

Surely, when shackles are eliminated, freedom is enhanced anywhere in the world. Isn't that an irrefutable fact?

I had gone further in my reply to Teck Ghee on May 6, and provided concrete evidence of what I regard as the manifestation of more pronounced democratic articulation – peaceful public assemblies, increased Chinese participation in Bersih 3, and the position adopted by the Chinese media on Bersih 3.

These are facts on the ground. Teck Ghee has failed to address them in his latest rejoinder.

Political Change

Teck Ghee uses an NGO document 'Spirit of Merdeka Declaration of 2007′ as the benchmark for determining whether the changes that have taken place in the last few months are significant or not. To evaluate the changes introduced in recent times, one should compare them to the situation that had prevailed all these years especially in relation to various restrictive laws.

Teck Ghee is doubtful if the changes introduced are sustainable. In this regard, he queries if the BN government will allow a peaceful transition of power at the Federal level in the event of a PR victory. He alludes to the Prime Minister's alleged refusal to answer a question on that issue at a talk in Kuala Lumpur as an indication that there may not be a peaceful transition.

Apart from all the possible reasons that Teck Ghee suggests for the PM's answer, "I don't have to answer that question"- it is quite conceivable that Najib was, as a close aide of his had opined, simply irritated and annoyed that someone could even raise such a question in the first instance.

While no one can be absolutely certain about how the incumbent would behave if it is defeated in the Federal polls, I'm amazed that Teck Ghee gives so much weight to that incident when there are other episodes of much greater significance that suggest the BN may respond positively in such a situation.

As a student of politics, I'm encouraged by the fact that the Alliance (the BN's predecessor) gracefully accepted its defeat in two states in the 1959 elections, two years after Merdeka. And between 1959 and 2008, apart from Kelantan and Trengganu, the ruling coalition was ousted in Penang and Sabah at different times.

Unfortunately, in Sabah the opposition party that won the election in 1994 was denied its right to rule through the machinations of a then BN leader who is today masquerading as a great champion of democracy!

In 2008, the BN allowed for a smooth transition of power in five states though in one of them, Perak, the PR was pushed out a year later through manoeuvres engineered by a BN leader who is now the BN chief and PM. I had on two occasions criticised his action as "unethical."

I was equally critical of the mischievous attempt by the Leader of the Opposition to induce cross-overs to the PR in September 2008 in order to overthrow the legitimate, democratically elected BN government. Given his infamous role in Sabah in 1994, I became convinced at that point that the man has a penchant for backdoor politics.

Teck Ghee, the danger of backdoor politics in the aftermath of the coming 13th General Election is as great as the challenge of a smooth transfer of power. As citizens we have to be vigilant against all forms of Machiavellian politics.

Police State

That the article that Teck Ghee e-mailed me arising from the PCORE forum attributed the term "Police State" to me without any reference to source or context tells us something about the materials that Teck Ghee uses to frame his position or his argument. No scholar worth his salt will resort to such writings to buttress his argument.

I remember that when a Toronto newspaper in 1988 also alleged that I had described Malaysia as a Police State in the wake of the Salleh Abas episode, I objected immediately. The term I had used in that newspaper interview was "authoritarian government".

Public intellectuals should be a little more careful about how they advance an argument since people tend to take them their words seriously.

Debate

This brings me to the question of a public debate with Teck Ghee. It is because both of us have strong views on Malaysian politics that a debate rather than a lengthy discourse via cyber media will be more appropriate. A discourse as we can see from this exchange will only generate more heat than light. Both of us will hold on tenaciously to our respective positions.  That is what one does in a debate.

So why not hold a debate? We can put across our arguments to the people and let them judge whether real political change is taking place in the country or not. The debate can be disseminated widely through the print, electronic and cyber media.

Integrity

Right through his reply of May 6, and in his earlier attack on me, Teck Ghee, implicitly and explicitly, casts aspersions on my integrity. He accuses me of "intellectual gymnastics", of changing my position, of doing a volte face. He is not the only one to do this. Many others have.

Some have used vulgar and vicious language. In fact, every time, an article of mine appears in cyber media, there would an avalanche of crude, coarse, sometimes cruel comments giving the impression that the assault on me is well orchestrated and organised.

From time to time I have responded to some of these attacks. But I have never really defended myself. Since the viciousness of the comments is becoming more brazen, I have decided to explain a few things.

As I had stated in my last reply to Teck Ghee, it is true I have changed my attitude towards to an individual politician – Anwar Ibrahim – and towards an institution, the political Opposition.  Why I regard Anwar as the most unscrupulous  politician – a cross between a Machiavellian and a chameleon, a Machileon – that this land has known will be revealed in detail during  Anwar's legal suit against me on Sept 10 -11, 2012.

Related to the issue of Anwar is my negative view of the Opposition. In the two and half years I was in their midst as Deputy President of Parti KeAdilan and Coordinator of Barisan Alternatif,  I realised that for some of the leaders, power was as great an obsession as it was for the BN. They would transgress any moral code to achieve their goal. I should hasten to add that at the same time, there were – and there still are – some really fine men and women in the Opposition.

Because I have changed my position on Anwar and the Opposition, it does not follow that my perspective on various national challenges has also changed. On ethnic relations and national unity, on Islam and religion, on democracy and accountability, on economic justice and equitable distribution of wealth, and on corruption and integrity, in Malaysia my approach and analysis remains fundamentally the same.

It is true that since 1991 when I stepped down as President of Aliran, I have been writing much less on Malaysia given my current focus upon global politics. But I challenge Teck Ghee or anyone else out there who has been shamelessly smearing me as a "turncoat" to produce evidence to show that I have changed my position on any of the fundamental challenges facing the nation.

If Teck Ghee in particular cannot substantiate his scurrilous comments on me, he should shut up. Otherwise, I would be compelled to reveal how he has metamorphosed from Marxist to MCA intellectual to PR apologist.

It is not just my perspective on national concerns that remains the same. I have not deviated from my balanced approach to issues that confront our society. While I showed why it is wrong to label non-Malay citizens as "pendatang" in an article shortly after that controversy broke out, I have never ceased to argue that recognising and accepting the Malay root of the Malaysian polity is crucial for the evolution of a united  Malaysian nation.

While applauding the reduction of absolute poverty, I continue to criticise the wide gap between the have-a-lot and the have-a-little. While I commended the DAP state government for the declaration of assets of its Executive Councillors, I expressed my disappointment in the Federal government for its inability to act with more firmness on the weaknesses in financial management highlighted in the Auditor-General's recent Report.

Even when I was Aliran President, my criticisms of the government did not blind me to the shortcomings of the Opposition. I wrote then – as I continue to write now – about the inherent flaws in PAS' notion of an Islamic state. By the same token, I was strongly opposed to the DAP's  endorsement of  a Chinese medium university, the Merdeka University.

It was partly because of my balanced approach during my Aliran years that the Malaysian government was willing to support Aliran's application for roster status with the UN's Economic and Social Council in the eighties.

This was also the reason why when I was arrested under the ISA in 1987, two former Prime Ministers, Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tun Hussein Onn, submitted affidavits on my behalf. So did a former Opposition leader, the late Dr Tan Chee Khoon. Once again, it underscored the virtue of balance in one's approach to national challenges.

Even after my formal break with the Opposition, there are Opposition leaders who come to see me. At the same time, I continue to engage with Government leaders. This engagement and interaction has not compromised my integrity in any way.

Nonetheless, because I value my integrity and independence above everything else, I have politely turned down positions of power. Neither have I accepted the lofty titles offered. My conscience is clear. And that is what counts.

Concluding remarks

To Teck Ghee, once again, my humble request: Accept my invitation to a public debate. If you turn down my invitation for a second time, I will not want to continue this exchange. I would rather concentrate upon a number of urgent tasks that await me and other citizens, like persuading both Federal and State governments to assume a caretaker role during the forthcoming General Election.

The ball is at your feet, Teck Ghee

Has the PM forgotten?

Has the PM forgotten?

Najib knows that if there are genuine electoral reforms, BN will be wiped out.

By Selena Tay | FMT

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak has mentioned last year that he is all for electoral reforms as he does not want BN to be seen as winning via electoral fraud. No one knows why he says one thing one day and absolutely forgets it the next day but this is just the case.

Now even after Bersih 3.0 on April 28, he has remained silent on electoral reforms. This means that his talk about wanting electoral reforms is just a cock and bull story. He also knows that if there are genuine electoral reforms, BN will be wiped out.

This confirms it that Malaysians have been cheated at the polls since the dawn of Independence. And yet there are still many who seem to enjoy being cheated by continuing to vote for BN.

However, eventhough PM Najib may have conveniently forgotten about electoral reforms, the French court will not forget him and the Scorpene submarine case.

It will be so shameful and embarassing for us Malaysians if we are international businessmen with overseas contacts because we will be asked countless questions pertaining to this matter.

Our international friends will think we are nuts for voting in PM Najib because they do not know that we do not have direct Prime Ministerial elections. The deal pertaining to the purchase of this submarine has tarnished the image of the nation.

As it is now, his administration is already riddled with financial scandals galore. It is high time we have a clean, transparent and efficient government for the good of the nation and its people.

The recent Bersih 3.0 events have booted Malaysian democracy a few rungs down the world democracy rankings.

All the Prime Minister's talk about Malaysia being a model democracy is plain rubbish. There are many pictures on Facebook showing the treatment meted out by the police force towards the Bersih participants.

Is this a model democracy? Clearly PM Najib never fails to forget his words. With this type of credibility, it will not be long before more foreign investors bypass us. Woe is us if we are still stuck with the Bolehland mentality!

All the Prime Minister's talk about BN being a caring government is also another lie. Why then are there so many hardcore poor in Sabah today? Why is the water in Johor more expensive than in Penang and Selangor? Why deny oil royalty payment to Kelantan?

Take note that Sabah is known as BN's vote bank, Johor is Umno's fortress and Kelantan has the most number of Malays. Who is oppressing who? And yet BN leaders like to use the race card in order to sow the seeds of distrust and disharmony.

Time for fear is over

It is high time that the BN be taught a great lesson, the lesson of obedience to the rakyat. Otherwise they will continue to bully us and take us for granted and treat us as dumbos.

It is time for us to say to the BN: 'Look here, we are the boss and we are firing you for insubordination and sabotaging our interests as will as general disobedience'.

Time for fear is over. If we are governed by fear then all is lost. As the saying goes in the movie 'V For Vendetta': The people should not be afraid of the government but the government should be afraid of the people.

The time for a new awakening is now. Do we want to make history by ushering in the dawn of a new era through voting for a new government? Can we see this in our lifetime or never at all?

Therefore we need to stand up and be counted. Open our eyes to see that PM Najib is nothing but a dream-wizard casting spells to make us believe his stories of grandeur which are just plain hogwash and falsehood designed to deceive us into voting for BN.

He is not a wordkeeper but a promise-breaker. He is dull, insipid and lacks conviction. It is time that BN be the opposition so that we can evaluate their performance as the opposition.

Nevertheless, they will have an easier time as the Pakatan Rakyat government will not be so nasty as to deny them their rightful allocation unlike what the BN government is now doing to the Pakatan MPs.

An example of the PM's forgetfulness or rather evasiveness was shown at a function in January this year. During this private lunch talk the Prime Minister was asked this question: "Mr Prime Minister, would you make the transition of the government for Pakatan a smooth one if the Opposition wins the general election?".

According to some of those present, after some hesitation the Prime Minister responded: "I do not have to answer that question" or words to that effect; following which he abruptly left, ostensibly for another function.

Now, why did PM Najib not answer that question? Among the Cantonese, there is a proverb which best describes him. It is 'kum kar geh' which translates into English as 'what a fake' and that in essence fully sums up what PM Najib is all about.
