Stop the lies – Tan Teck Huat

APRIL 28 – Today more than 100,000 Malaysians showed they cared: they turned out to show solidarity with the objective of making our elections clean.

But you can bet that all the novel aims of the vast majority of people will be buried in the Utusan Malaysia, Star, New Straits Times and TV3. Only photographs of water cannons and those which create the impression of chaos and militancy will be used.

Some of their editors and journalists will write columns and commentaries from their ivory towers or only after getting directives.

And guess what? We will troop faithfully to the shops tomorrow to buy paper and be fed lies upon lies by political operatives who are masquerading as journalists.

It is obvious from today's turnout that there are tons of Malaysians who have their moral compass in the right direction and who care greatly that the coming polls could be decided by "non-citizens".

But let's take this spirit of caring one step forward and stop buying the mainstream newspapers from now till the elections are over. We will achieve two goals by doing so: making futile their attempt to influence Malaysians with their propaganda and hitting their bottomline.

So let's say no to Utusan, TV3, NST, Star, Berita Harian and also to BN-backed sites like Stop the Lies.

Who caused Bersih 3.0 chaos? – Muhammad Farouk

APRIL 28 – Bersih 3.0 is over, cut short by teargas and water cannons raining on those converging at Dataran Merdeka today. Thousands of Malaysians surrounded the square patch of grass, once known for its cricket, but now garlanded by barbed wires, fencing, plastic barriers and guarded by riot police and policemen.

It was supposed to be a peaceful sit-in, and for hours, it was. Until some people apparently went through the barricades of a public square barred to the public. The riot police snapped to action and plumes of teargas wafted through the air and streams of jet from water cannons rained on the people. And mayhem ensued.

Now, who do we blame for this? The authorities for not learning the lessons of Bersih 2.0? Bersih people for being hijacked by politicians? Who else can we blame?

The authorities have made up their minds about this. From yesterday, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein briefed mainstream media editors and told them the government had done its best to have a peaceful rally.

They offered Stadium Merdeka, the venue that was denied to Bersih 2.0.

The Home Minister warned that the police would have to guarantee security if things went out of hand, saying that there were politicians out to hijack the movement. This was after the police got court order that turned every Malaysian a persona non grata at Dataran Merdeka, where the British Union Jack was lowered down for the last time on our soil in 1957.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman told the same story to the foreign press yesterday. That the government had bent over backwards but the Bersih organisers were obstinate. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the same thing today too in Kuching, far away from Ground Zero in Dataran Merdeka. Funny, there were no untoward incidents in other cities in Malaysia or across the world.

Only in Dataran Merdeka. Where pandemonium broke out. Where Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and a host of other Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders turned up. So, naturally, they get the blame.

Of course, the mainstream media has picked on this and have blamed these political leaders for what happened around Dataran Merdeka today. It is easy and convenient to say that they were behind the chaos. Simple mathematics really, a huge crowd facing rows of policemen under the hot sun plus opposition politicians and what do you get? Chaos.

Except, the riot police didn't really have to fire teargas and water cannons repeatedly and chase people until 7pm. The authorities didn't have to put up roadblocks or stop LRT trains from taking or dropping passengers at the several LRT stations in the vicinity.

It was a peaceful assembly outside the zone barred by law. The crowd was young and old, from all walks of life. They wanted to show they cared for a clean and fair election that would benefit everyone, especially the politicians.

However, the police decided otherwise. They decided to rain on the people's parade and conveniently, the establishment can blame Anwar for it. As easy as that.

But they will have to account for the streams of Instagrams, Facebook photographs and videos uploaded since this morning to reinforce their innocence or guilt. The people know better.

We know who to blame for today's mayhem. We know who to vote for in the next general election. The ones who stopped us from sitting down, the ones who sprayed gas and water at us because we cared for Malaysia's future won't get our vote but our eternal damnation.

So go on and blame Anwar and the rest. We know better.

Bersih 3.0 A Success ...

Inline image 2

A handful of protestors led by rowdy members of the opposition managed to provoke the police to react. The image above clearly shows the red-shirted Unit Amal of PAS charging and daring the Police to stop them.

Lydiawati Osman

For once, I have to disagree with my mentor, Datuk S. Ambiga. She says Bersih 3.0 was a success because many people attended. The Malaysian Insider puts the crowd at 30,000 while Malaysiakini puts it at 100,000. For me, for my friends who were marching, there is one reason and one reason only to proclaim Bersih 3.0 a 'success' and that is because a handful of protestors led by rowdy members of the opposition managed to provoke the police to react. The image above clearly shows the red-shirted Unit Amal of PAS charging and daring the Police to stop them. Because the police reacted with water and gas, the quantum of news minutes that Bersih 3.0 will get online and around the world will multiply by more than ten times.

To be fair to Datuk S. Ambiga, she did clearly urge the crowd to disperse before the water gas and water cannons were fired because she felt that objectives of the rally were achieved. But one group who were there for other reasons clearly did not listen. The troublemaker segment of the crowd instead listened to Anwar Ibrahim and Azmin Ali who pushed them hard to break down the barriers the police had constructed. For the police, despite not having roadblocks into KL the night before like they did during Bersih 2.0, despite allowing us to walk through KL in the right spirit which was almost carnival like, Azmin breaking down barriers that a Court Judge had effectively ordered the police to erect were just too much for them to let go. Anwar knew this, which is why he ordered Azmin to ensure that adequate provocation was carried out.

If there was any further proof that any rational Malaysian needed to know that the Opposition had unfairly hijacked Bersih 3.0, this provocative action was it. It was in effect the final nail in the coffin for the independence and civil-society orientation of Bersih 3.0. I feel cheated to have marched for Bersih and for Ambiga. Instead, my small part that I wanted to play for my country's future, my sacrifice to! face an y bodily harm was instead cheaply purchased for the propagation of the Opposition.

I will never march again if Anwar and his troublemakers are allowed to take over what belonged to civil society. We created the awareness of this, we sweated and struggled for this, we were arrested and inconvenienced for this yet it is Anwar and his henchmen who will gain the most from Bersih 3.0. It is Anwar and Pakatan Rakyat not democracy that gains from this. The irony is that all that Bersih and Datuk Ambiga were fighting for are the same practices that Anwar openly practiced as UMNO leader, Barisan MP and most recently as Keadilan Supremo when he rigged the entire Parti Keadilan Rakyat elections and good leaders like Zaid Ibrahim were forced to exit the party.

Without Anwar and Opposition politicians, the situation was much better, especially in the morning. The image below of my friend engaging the police is proof of this. When actual independent supporters of Bersih were the ones marching, we approached the police in peace, we did not desire a confrontation with the police but just wanted the make our point heard loud and clear. If the rally had continued in this spirit, Bersih 3.0 would have a been a real and true success for the people and Government of Malaysia. Instead it is real 'success' for Anwar Ibrahim and Pakatan Rakyat as BN will be skewered and vilified by the global media, with CNN etc. smiling with glee at the amount of entertaining footage that Azmin Ali and his band of hoodies has freely provided.

Bersih condemns violence, wants investigation

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersih has declared the rally a success but regrets the violent turn of events.

Bersih co-chairperson S Ambiga said that 250 000 people turned up for the rally and that it was a "success".

However, she added that the police must investigate the actions of a few protesters who breached the barriers which cordoned off Dataran Merdeka.

Later, speaking to FMT, Bersih steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah said the movement achieved in getting the numbers that it was aiming for.

"We don't support the violence that happened…we have no idea who they are and the police should investigate the matter," she said.

The rally began peacefully with thousands gathered in the city hours before the scheduled sit-in protest.

People were allowed to gather and chant slogans with minimal disturbance from the authorities. There was fairly little disturbance even when the protesters began to make their way to Dataran Merdeka around 2pm.

Speaking to the crowd then, Ambiga hailed the rally as a success and asked the crowd to disperse after 20 minutes because the point had been made to the authorities.

However the crowd insisted on marching forward and some broke the barriers which cordoned off Dataran. The police then fired tear-gas and water cannons at the protesters.

Four hours after the rally, some protesters are still refusing to disperse.

Large turn-out at Bersih gatherings in Sabah, Sarawak

KOTA KINABALU: About 1,500 people from all walks of life converged at the historic Padang Merdeka in the city today, only to be turned away by hundreds of policemen barricading the field.

They, however, managed to conduct their Bersih 3.0 sit-in – for free and fair elections – around the field which on normal days is open to the public either for sport or recreation.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) officers were quick to thwart Sabah Bersih 3.0 plans to hold its peaceful sit-in protest against electoral fraud which the state has seen more than its fair share of since the 1990s when the Unmo-led Barisan Nasional coalition came to power.

However, DBKK's hastily organised anti-crime programme was poorly attended with almost all the stalls set up on the field empty.

Only scores of DBKK staff were present in the stalls. Nevertheless, they used their loud speaker system to disrupt the speeches of some Bersih leaders who were using a hailer.

Among those present were Bersih 3.0 Sabah chairman, singer Atama, whose real name is Andrew Ambrose, State Reform Party (STAR) Sabah chairman, Jeffrey Kitingan, state DAP chairman, Jimmy Wong and PKR leaders.

Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Yong Teck Lee, who sent 200 members from the party's youth wing, also appeared briefly.

Police put the number of Bersih demonstrators at about 800 to 1,000.

However, opposition leaders claimed there could be easily more than 2,000 who turned up.

There were no untoward incidents, no arrests were made and the crowd started to disperse.

Sudden cleanup at monument

Meanwhile, a small group of 20 activists who gathered at the now famous Peter Mojuntin Monument in Donggongon, Penampang, some 12km from here, were prevented from holding their sit-in protest at the site.

But unperturbed, they went on to stage their sit-in at a cafe next to the monument.

In a bit of a comedic operation, workers of the Penampang District Council and some policemen carried out a clean-up at the monument from 11am till 4pm without stopping, the first time the authority has done so in years, according to locals.

They were seen scrubbing the floor areas and the lower part of the bronze statue of the revered leader of the Kadazandusuns.

The workers also made sure the area was wet at all times so that it was unsuitable for a sit-in protest.

Among the activists present there were chairman of CigMa or Common Interest Group Malaysia, Daniel John Jambun, representative of Mafrel and Transparency International, Jerry Ombou, Penampang representative Bernard Solibun and lawyer Peter Marajin.

Himpunan Bersih

Meanwhile, in the east coat town of Tawau, scores of residents came out in a show of solidarity for Bersih 3.0 as well as to protest the approval for an Australian company to process rare earth in the country.

About 100 young and elderly folk gathered at the Union Tea House here between 1pm and 3pm and chatted over cups of tea and coffee before posing for a group photo.

They were joined by Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Tawau MP Chua Soon Bui, DAP woman chairman Cristina Yeo and MCA Tawau Youth chairman Marco Yap .

Plainclothes police personnel kept the group under watch but did not interfere.

Yap, the only BN member there, said he received support when he posted on his Facebook that he will come to the gathering to back Himpunan Hijau.

"Tawau politicians showed maturity, pushing aside politics when fighting for a good cause," he said.

Chua said the protest had nothing to do with politics, but rather was a bid to show that people are not happy with the Election Commission and the government's indecisiveness over the Lynas rare earth plant project.

"With the gatherings in Malaysia and around the world, it is the people's hope that the message will get across to the government that transparency and accountability must be taken seriously."

New experience in Sarawak

PAS also held its own gathering but it was more like a picnic by the seaside, with several members wearing the Bersih's yellow T-shirts.

In SARAWAK, the Bersih sit-in went on without any major incidents. It was apparently the first such experience for Sarawakians who have only read, watched and heard of street protests.

Organisers in Kuching and Miri said they were happy with the support shown by Sarawakians for Bersih's nationwide sit-down demanding clean and free polls.

In Kuching, some 1,500 people gathered at the Old Courthouse area near the Kuching Waterfront. The Waterfront was cleaned by Kuching City Hall, making it inconvenient for any "sit-down" activity.

Nonetheless, the crowd proceeded to the Old Courthouse and joining them were DAP elected representatives Chong Chieng Jen (Kota Sentosa), Violet Yong (Pending), Chiew Chu Sing (Kidurung) and PKR assemblymen Baru Bian and See Chee How. Also present were several NGOs championing native and environmental issues.

Meanwhile, Miri saw a 1,400-strong crowd gather in front of the Resident's Office while in Sibu some 600 supporters made a beeline to the Central Market.

According to Sibu Bersih's Dominic Sii, the sit-down protest was a "new" experience for Sibu residents.

He said the gathering saw a large turnout from the local Iban and Malay communities.

"We have never protested like this. It is a new experience for us. We were surprised and encouraged to see the participation of a large group of Ibans and Malays.

"Everyone was cooperative. We sat down until 4pm and then dispersed," he told FMT.

Also present were DAP's two assemblymen David Wong (Palawan) and Yap Hoy Leong (Tutong).

Bersih admits lost crowd control after police action...

Bersih admitted it lost control of the tens of thousands on the streets of the capital today when protesters failed to adhere to strict instructions not to breach the police barricade surrounding Dataran Merdeka.

Steering committee member Wong Chin Huat told The Malaysian Insiderthat Bersih chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenavasan had ordered the crowd to disperse some time after 2pm but this message did not reach the crowd of thousands gathered outside the square.

"The dismissal was announced but they could not hear. Ambiga could have been at one end and they could not hear it," he said, adding that the Bersih co-chair had marched from her meeting point at Central Market and reached Jalan Tun Perak near Dataran Merdeka when she told the crowd to disperse.

When the rally continued, said Wong, Bersih leaders and security personnel from PAS's Unit Amal failed to hold back protesters from proceeding to breach the barricade, which the election watchdog group had earlier promised it would not do today.

Following the breach, the Federal Reserve Unit and hundreds of riot police sprung into action, raining down chemical-laced water and tear gas canisters upon protesters who were running in droves towards the square.

The coalition of 84 civil societies also called for investigations into the violence that took place, pledging to give full co-operation to the police.

Ambiga told a press conference that the some 250,000 to 300,000 protesters who turned up were "extremely well-behaved and excellent," until "someone" pushed through! the bar riers in front of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) leading to Dataran Merdeka.

"The turnout itself was a success as we received so much support. Everything was going fine until someone broke through the barriers — which we do not support at all — and thus provoked the tear gas.
"We want the police to fully investigate all who engaged in violence. This was not what we wanted at all," the former Bar Council president said.

Police had fired water cannons and tear gas on demonstrators who pushed through the barricade in front of DBKL, resulting in chaos on the streets.alaysian insider

Some of the 15,000-strong crowd, led by PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, broke down the barriers and moved towards the historic square, leading to police firing chemical-laced water and tear gas canisters.
Police fired as far as the DBKL premises, which are across Jalan Parlimen, and the move broke up the crowd at Dataran who fled helter-skelter.

Angry protestors later attacked a police car which then crashed into at least two people while trying to flee.
The angry crowd then surrounded the policemen but volunteers from PKR's Jingga 13 formed a human shield around the officers, saying "don't blame them, it's not their fault."

After an ambulance took away the injured policemens, the protestors flipped the car over on its side but then fled after tear gas was fired.- malaysian insider

Polis tembak gas pemedih mata, meriam air...

PKR MP: Cops fired without warning

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR leader Fuziah Salleh has recounted what transpired this afternoon prior to the police firing tear gas and water cannons at the Bersih 3.0 protesters.

According to the Kuantan MP, who has been at the forefront of the anti-Lynas campaign, she was travelling in a Toyota Hilux with Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and Bersih chairperson S Ambiga along Jalan Tun Perak where the duo addressed the crowd.

"Ambiga wanted to get down from the truck but the crowd was too tight.

"We asked the crowd to disperse but spirits were too high so we decided to drive forward so it would be easier to disperse them," she added.

Following this, Fuziah said they had stopped at a junction and wanted to turn into Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.

"Anwar and (DAP supremo Lim) Kit Siang were about to give a speech when we suddenly saw them (the police) spraying chemical water. (There was) No warning whatsoever.

"My bodyguard pulled me to the DBKL (building) and we rested in an ambulance. People were coughing blood and (tear gas) canisters were flying everywhere.

"People couldn't walk because they couldn't see or breathe. Police didn't allow people to be static so they chased them off," she added.

Fuziah said if the authorities had allowed the organisers to use Dataran Merdeka, "there would have been space for everyone."

She pointed out that the anti-Lynas Himpunan Hijau 2 rally in Kuantan proceeded peacefully because the organisers were given a field.

The police escorted us and made sure we were safe, she added.

Protesters hound 'SB'

In another development, protesters at Masjid Jamek vented their anger on those whom they suspected of being undercover policemen.

Just minutes ago, a Malay man in his 40s was hounded by a crowd of 500, shouting,"SB (Special Branch), SB!"

The man quickly produced a Bersih headband, which simmered the crowd down. Nevertheless, some PAS Unit Amal crew members quickly led the man to safety.

The PAS members then tried to get the crowd, numbering close to 1,000, to disperse.

Just then, several police trucks drove past, prompting some in the crowd to pelt the vehicles with bottles and stones.

The police convoy stopped for a moment, causing the crowd to scatter, before moving on.

Police blame demonstrators for violence

KUALA LUMPUR: The city police have blamed participants of Bersih 3.0 rally for the event turning violent towards its tail end.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohmad Salleh said the situation was under control until 2.55pm prior to speeches by opposition leaders at the rally, which called for free and fair election.

"After 2.50pm some of the demonstrators tried to break through the police barricade at Dataran Merdeka.

"This was the barricade placed at the junction of Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. They also threw objects at the police.

"Once they broke through the barricades, we decided to fire water cannons to disperse the crowd. When they continued, we fired the tear gas," he said in a statement today.

The city police are also expected to release those arrested later this evening.

"We are trying to ascertain the number of arrests made so far… we will inform the media of the numbers and where they are being taken," a senior police officer told FMT.

Eye-witnesses on the ground reveal that four bus loads of those arrested are being ferried to an undisclosed location. They are expected to be taken to the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) for their statements to be recorded.

Did Bersih walk into BN’s trap?

KUALA LUMPUR: At about 3.20pm, a riot squad truck was seen firing chemical-laced water at a handful of yellow-clad protesters near the Dataran Merdeka area. A few minutes later, several tear gas canisters were shot.

This was just after poll watchdog Bersih 3.0 co-chairman S Ambiga declared the sit-in protest – to demand for free and fair elections – a success after more than 20,000 had defied police lockdown to gather just in front of the police barricades blocking the entrance to the square.

And despite police warning that stern action will be taken against those found near the barricaded area following a restriction order obtained yesterday, the police made no indication that they would act on the crowd.

It had been peaceful from the start. Those gathered at several meeting points throughout the city were allowed to converge near the square.

In fact, opposition leaders like PKR's Anwar Ibrahim and DAP's Karpal Singh were permitted to pass through the police blockades en route to the rendezvous point.

So what led to the fracas at around 3.20pm?

What drove the police to fire tear gas and water cannons on the protesters despite the crowd's intention to disperse already?

Let's look at the chronology of events.

Just after zohor prayers at around 1.45pm, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali made an appearance at the Dataran Merdeka intersection and delivered a short speech whipping up sentiments with the 20,000-strong crowd present.

He asked the crowd: "Do you want to enter Dataran?" The crowd shouts back, "Yes". And Azmin replied: "Dataran does not belong to DBKL."

Ambiga dispersed crowd

At about 2.30pm, Ambiga was in Masjid Jamek and declared that the rally was a success and urged the crowd to disperse.

At 2.35pm, Anwar took to the stage in Masjid India. He echoed Ambiga's declaration of success and spiced it with a "we want elections to be clean. Malays, Chinese and Indians today all want the dirty government to end".

Ambiga again called for the crowd to disperse peacefully before continuing her journey to Dataran Merdeka.

Barely had she asked the crowd to disperse when a handful of Bersih supporters forced their way through the barricades leading to Dataran.

This prompted the police to retaliate and the peaceful protest inadvertently became a repeat of the Bersih 2.0 rally that saw the city turned into a war-zone and a headache for the Najib administration.

But the tables are likely to be turned now.

Unlike the July 9 rally which saw police acting brutally against a peaceful rally, today's fracas was triggered by some unruly supporters of a group that often prided itself on its peaceful demeanour and politically correct demands.

This is exactly what their rivals in the ruling Barisan Nasional want.

BN has tried hard in the past to depict the coalition of rights groups as anti-establishment hell-bent on overthrowing the government through mob rule.

Bersih in bad light

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Today's untoward incident gave them just that – the political ammunition to invalidate's Bersih's demands and strengthen accusations that it never had intentions to improve the election system.

Anticipation is rife that government-owned mainstream media are almost certain to highlight the encroachment made by some of the Bersih 3.0 protesters which forced the police to act.

What would worsen it is the fact that the altercation came amid Ambiga's vow to respect the court order and pledge that Bersih 3.0 will act in accordance with the law.

Bersih leaders and their opposition backers are likely to deflect the issue.

They will likely blame the violence on agent provocateurs or turn the argument around on "principled grounds", saying had they been allowed to assemble in Dataran, none of this would have happened.

But this argument has often fallen on deaf ears.

The votes from the highly critical fence-sitting electorate are key to turning around Pakatan Rakyat's fortunes in its ambition to capture Putrajaya.

Given that omnipresent perception that Bersih and Pakatan are inseparable, the political repercussions from today's fracas would likely repel neutral support for Pakatan and at the same time discredit Bersih's otherwise valid demands.

Selepas Bersih, KL jadi kotor

Turut hadir pemimpin seperti Ketua Pembangkang Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Nurul Izzah Anwar, Lim Kit Siang, Azmin Ali, Salahudin Ayub, Datuk Husam Musa dan lain-lain.

A Yellow Mellow tomorrow

an instant poem to be shared quite urgently
by Azly Rahman

I told you already
of the fate of this country
that has moved so fast
and now we have another BERSIH rally
yellow mellow what will it be like tomorrow?
we all won't know until we wear yellow

I have advised the country already
to go to the national square and treat it like a samba party
why aggravate the authorities when they too wish to join in the party?
they are all lonely and want to be clean and happy
in their hearts they powers that be want to be corrupt-free

what then must we do
for a yellow mellow hot potato tomorrow?
i am into cultural parties and and sports events aplenty
so– BERSIH people let us do things differently

wake up very early
brush your teeth and eat capati and mutton curry
get your yellow mellow -shirt and hide it in your bag together with your Rolling Stones CD
out of the house you shall march and march and march quietly
march and march on your own quietly to the station LRT
don't let anybody see your yellow tee and your lunch pack of mutton curry
the authorities will want some of it but don't give your capati to anybody

ride the LRT quietly
when folks ask you where you're going
tell them you're visiting a sick auntie
a white clean lie goes well with the spirit of a BERSIH rally

when you reach your destiny .. opps .. destination i mean seriously
wait till you see people suspiciously carrying a backpack of capati and mutton curry
these are your brothers and sisters in arms and legs and limbs aplenty

when all eyes locked in unspoken camaraderie
jump up and down and sing hip hip hooray and do a bit of funky chicken dance to release some BERSIH energy or the Africans call it honoring the "good chi"

mind you folks the authorities don't want you to march or rally
especially if you still have that capati and a plastic bag of mutton curry

but here is what the organizers can do to make it a smooth sailing sit-in party …

Now take your yellow mellow hot potato tee
wear it with pride and unquestionable dignity
it might smell a bit of capati and mutton curry — but what me worry?

get in groups of twenty
we will have a three-hour sports and cultural party
do the samba
dance the rhumba
sing "honga honga"
do the tai chi
put away the capati
do the yoga
wear a yellow toga
perform the malay silat
be careful of the flying lalats
do the breakdance
make sure those over sixty just sit and watch quietly if they can
sing the acapella
singing praises of the global listing of FELDA
dance the zapin
remember it doesn't go with the songs of led zeppelin
ahhaa .. don't forget the dance poco-poco
banned in perlis and 13 states more to go …
this is the time in this yellow mellow sports and cultural sit-in rodeo
for those poor perlis folks to overdose on the poco-poco
those with a guitar or a sitar or an avatar of the sitar and sitar
sing the blues and the jazz tunes praising the beauty of Perak's left and right bota
johoreans can sing the ghazal
accompanied by PERKASA performers from silat pulut sambal
pahang folks can do the joget pahang
dancers imported from telok bahang
i'd like to join the indian classical dancers
the bharat nadyam i think is a cool dance that provides life's difficult answers
ahhha … we must not forget the shaolin dance
inspired by ancient chinese buddhist monks always in trance
yellow mellow kung fu hot potatoes
— not that's a shaolin training laced with "Ohm-mi-to-fu" as verses fit for budding Shaolin heroes

i can go on and on and on and on
suggesting how a yellow mellow clean rally can be Malaysia's open big samba party
so big that both the proper and improper authorities can see the beauty and possibilities of a peaceful rally
even the world's royalty can join in the yellow party
since they wear yellow outfit daily
they will save on BERSIH yellow tee …

Malaysians I honor and respect thee
Rallies need not be ugly
Sit-ins need not be a time to get angry
A regime change is a possibility in any democracy
A gentlemanly and lady-like act to relinquish power held for centuries
Deep in the heart of any regime
is the cry to repent from all its sins
and to take a break from doing the work of devils and djinns

Yellow mellow hot potatoes
Yellow mellow sweet potatoes
We shall all see a better tomorrow

Adios amigoes …

Burger ‘Anti-Bersih’ King

KUALA LUMPUR: Fast food outlet Burger King has been branded as "anti-Bersih" when one of its outlets at Masjid Jamek barred people from using the toilet.

The excuse being there was a water shortage.

"I managed to sneak upstairs and there was water and a queue of people waiting to use it. I don't understand why they didn't allow us to use the toilet," said an irate Nancy Chiew.

Dennison Lim said he felt that the manager seemed particularly antagonistic towards those wearing the yellow Bersih t-shirt.

"Maybe he was stressed or tired, but he wasn't very polite. When I asked about plug sockets, he just waved his hand and said 'there'. Altogether, the staff wasn't very polite," he added.

To add to this, around 11.45am, yellow cones, ironically, were put against the entrance of the fast food restaurant barring anyone from coming in.

When queried about this, an employee just shrugged his shoulders and said: "Boss suruh letak." (Boss asked to put it).

Evelyn Law was of the opinion that the Burger King management here seemed "anti-Bersih".

"I came here with my family, we spent over RM150 and we were given looks like we were table crashing," she said.

The manager was unavailable for comment.

Paragliders cause a stir

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have been accused by some Bersih 3.0 protesters of provocation, while the same is also being said of the crowd.

Earlier, when two motor propeled paragliders, believed to be policemen, flew overhead of the crowd here near Dataran Merdeka, it drew cheers.

But the cheers turned into "boos" after protesters claimed that it was a form of provocation by the authorities.

Hundreds of police, forming a line, also paraded through the crowd, asking those too near to the barricade to step back.

Earlier the crowd also chanted "jatuh, jatuh" when a police helicopter hovered over them.

Dataran Merdeka ‘face-off’

KUALA LUMPUR: An inevitable tense stand-off between supporters of Bersih 3.0 and the police is expected at Dataran Merdeka within the next two hours as marches – in support of the rally – from various part of the city centre converge at the historical site within the next 90 minutes.

Reports from the ground showed that the police have upped their preparation for a face-off with nearly 20,000 protesters, who started besieging the city centre since early this morning.

Water cannons and the dreaded Federal Reserve Unit (FRU), usually used for crowd control and dispersal, moved into the vicinity of Dataran Merdeka a few minutes ago signalling the start of the stand-off.

Ground reports reveal that the police are moving closer to the Jalan Raja/ Jalan Tun Perak intersection.

Police trucks and lorries are about 50 metres from the barbed wire blockade while the FRU personnel are about 75 metres away.

The crowd is in a jubilant mood.

Scores of police personnel are wading through the crowd from Masjid Jamek station towards the intersection in front of DBKL.

Bersih 3.0 participants from various parts of the city like Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Dataran Maybank, the Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Brickfields and other areas of the city are inching towards Dataran Merdeka.

Whipping up crowd sentiment

Opposition leaders, including Anwar Ibrahim, are expected to meet the crowd at the intersection of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Raja at 2.30pm and deliver speeches.

It is yet to be ascertained if the police would allow any form of speeches at the location.

PKR deputy president Azmin Ali kicked off the "ceramah" session at Dataran Maybank just a few minutes ago.

Azmin was joined by several PAS leaders, whipping up the crowd sentiment.

About 20,000 people have gathered at Dataran Maybank and are expected to move towards Dataran Merdeka at 1.30pm.

The Jalan Sultan and Jalan Pudu crowds have converged on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock and are now marching towards Dataran Merdeka.

Because of the hot afternoon sun, many are marching in the shade of the Ampang Line RapidKL LRT tracks.

Oddly enough, a couple of paragliders were seen flying above the crowd, minutes after a police helicopter hovered over the same area.

The police late Thursday obtain a court order restraining Bersih 3.0 chairperson S Ambiga, Bersih organisers and the public from meeting at Dataran Merdeka.

The order is for four days starting yesterday.

Police and the City Hall have also placed barricades to "protect" Dataran Merdeka.

Meanwhile, the organisers are asking the people to move towards the Central Market carpark as police are not allowing anyone to use the pathway linking it to Dataran Merdeka.

Suhakam, Bar Council show support for Bersih 3.0

KUALA LUMPUR: Suhakam and the Bar Council are fully in support of the Bersih 3.0 rally.

Suhakam commissioner James Nayagam says the Bersih 3.0 rally is a peaceful gathering.

"I am here to negotiate. Its peaceful according to the Federal Constitution, said the Suhakam commissioner who was near Dataran.

"I am neutral party to ensure both parties respect each others rights and assemble peacefully.

"I am here also to monitor any form of abuse, which is anything that would lead to violence. I don't see any reason why people are not allowed to gather.

"I'm also here to mediate if there's any negotiation that needs to be done. I am concerned with the presence of children and elderly people. Generally, the constitution says everyone can gather anywhere and by right they should be allowed into Dataran."

Bar Council observer Daniel Lo, also echoed similar sentiments

"Its their right to protest. In principle Bar Council supports rights to peaceful assembly," Lo said.

Meanwhile a number of opposition spokespersons spoke to the crowd gathered in front of the Maybank towers in Jalan Tun Perak.

Zulkefly Mohamad Omar, a PAS spokesperson said: "We are here because the EC has been used by the BN. We are here to say our support to the Pakatan Rakyat and NGO to clean our democracy. We don't want corrupt leaders who take bribes."

"We don't want foreigners in our voter rolls!"

DAP's Bakri MP Er Teck Hwa said: "I hope those of you who have not registered to become voters will do so soon."

Students warned: Rally and you will lose scholarship

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian students studying abroad on government scholarships have been warned to stay away from "any activities that are detrimental to the stakes of the government".

In a harshly worded e-mail issued on April 26, Public Service Department (PSD) education and training adviser Mohd Nazrol Marzuke warned students that their scholarships were at stake if they were found to have breached the clauses 5.4 and 5.5 of their federal scholarship agreement.

Mohd Nazrol's e-mail was sent out to students studying in the US, but it apparently mirrors numerous verbal threats that were reportedly issued over the past few days to students in several countries including the UK.

He said students risked "very serious peril" if they rallied calling for free and fair elections in Malaysia.

In the e-mail, Mohd Nazrol drew the udents' attention to clauses 5.4 and 5.5 of the Federal Scholarship Agreement, urging them to "digest the full meaning of the fine-written clauses" .

He said the government "would not hesitate to invoke a proper termination procedure as in paragraph 7 " against any student who breached the clause and the content of the agreement.

"Please think and use your wisdom carefully before making any rash action that could adversely affect your own self, sponsoring department and the nation in general. Refrain yourself from joining, conspiring or contributing in whatever ways to any activities that may be considered detrimental to the stakes of the government and the nation," Mohd Nazrol wrote.

Posting a copy of Mohd Nazrol's letter on its portal, Sarawak Report said: "The content of the advisory message from the Malaysian government had forced many of the students to wear masks so that they can take part in the peaceful demonstrations without being identified by the dozens of Malaysian Special Branch officers, who are expected to be monitoring and photographing the rally."

SUARAM slams intimidation of students

Meanwhile, Suaram in London has criticised the government for intimidating students and other demonstrators.

"Suaram wants the police and the government to stop harassing the people from practising their fundamental liberties. We urge the government to look into the demands of the Bersih 2.0 instead of clamping down on their freedom of expression and assembly.

"If the Prime Minister Najib [Tun Razak] is sincere in listening to the people and practising the slogan "People First", then he should not curb people's rights and freedoms.

"We call on the government, as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, to end the intimidation and threats immediately and to adopt the core principles of human rights in all laws and policies," it said in a statement yesterday.

Universal right to assembly, free speech must be respected!

FMT LETTER: From E Nalini, via e-mail

Suaram strongly condemns attempts by the police to stop the Bersih3.0 sit and protest rally today at Dataran Merdeka. As a member of the Bersih 2.0 coalition, Suaram condemns the police and the government under the Najib's administration for disallowing people to exercise their fundamental human rights.

We condemn all the harassment and tactics by the Government, Police, Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Court to stop the people from practicing their fundamental liberties and to intimidate supporters of  Bersih 2.0 coalition which is calling for free and fair elections.

The Election Commission has lost its credibility after it failed to act on recommendations towards strengthening and improving electoral processes. The failure of the EC has led to the peaceful assembly known as Duduk Bantah 3.0 (Sit in protest 3.0).

The court order issued yesterday by Magistrate Zaki Asyraf Zubir, KL Magistrate's Court, banned any gathering at Dataran Merdeka, which is the land bordering Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, Jalan Raja and Jalan Kelab except the area occupied by the Selangor Royal Club.

The order also warns the public against attending, being present or taking part in any gathering from today to May 1.

On April 20, Tan Hong Kai, an intern of Suaram, was arrested on allegation of trespassing while putting up Bersih3.0 posters in University Science Malaysia; Tan was released later that day under police bail.

On April 22, the Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) and police officers raided a protest campsite at the Merdeka Square and arrested two activists (Fahmi Reza and Umar Mohd Azmi) under Section 186 of the Penal Code (obstructing public servants from performing their duties). They were released later the same day under police bail.

On April 23, Umar Abdul Aziz was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate Court under section 186 and he was fined RM1,000.

On April 24, the authorities again arrested three student activists and one supporter at the same campsite and took them to the Dang Wangi district police station at Kuala Lumpur.

On April 25, the four were charged at Kuala Lumpur Magistrate Court under section 186 and two was fined RM1,000 and another two were fined RM 900.

Adopt core principles of human rights in all laws and policies

Suaram wants the police and the government to stop all the harassment to stop the people from practicing their fundamental liberties. Suaram urges the government to look into the demands of the Bersih 2.0 instead of clamping down on their freedom of expression and assembly.

If the Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is sincere in listening to the people and practicing the slogan "People First", then he should not curb people's rights and freedoms.

We call on the government, as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, to end the intimidation and threats and to adopt the core principles of human rights in all laws and policies.

We also call on the government to stop placing its influence on the EC and employing dirty tactics during elections. Instead, the government should be pressuring the EC to ensure clean, free and fair elections.

This is a national challenge that the country will have to confront if it wishes to move forward in creating genuine harmony and open democracy.

The writer is Executive Director of Suaram

Crowd near Dataran begins to swell

KUALA LUMPUR: Although the Bersih 3.0 protest is only slated for 2pm, the crowd along the

Masjid Jamek LRT station right up to the intersection to Dataran Merdeka has swelled to more than 1,000 as of 10am.

Chants of "Duduk Bantah" echoed along Jalan Tun Perak to Dataran Merdeka.

The court order barring Bersih chairperson S Ambiga and Bersih organisers from Dataran Merdeka had been pasted at the traffic light near the iconic square.

The court order was also published in several newspapers to inform the public that Dataran Merdeka was off-limits.

After calling on the Bersih protesters to sit, the protesters also chanted for the police personnel stationed behind the barricade to sit as well.

The protesters cheered, clapped and chanted "Bersih" and "Allahu Akhbar". They also targetted Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's wife Rosmah Mansor by chanting: "Turun-turun, Rosmah turun."

There are also unverified rumours spreading that the police might resort to high frequency sound devices to disperse the crowd.
