Believe us when we say… — Daud Kilau

APRIL 9 — The Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar wants Malaysians to take his force's word that Nazri Aziz's son did not assault a 50-year-old security guard.

That is a fair request because all along we have "trusted" the IGP and his band of merry men.

We "believed" the cops when they told us that:

• only 5,000 people turned up for Bersih 2.0

• they "detained" 10 men for putting up defamatory posters about A. Samad Said and Ambiga Sreenevasan in Taman Tun Dr Ismail in Kuala Lumpur a couple of months ago and then went silent.

• the Penang cops were not trained to handle the Umno hooligans who disrupted an anti-Lynas gathering in Penang and bashed up two journalists.

• they are "investigating" the Umno bloggers and Utusan Malaysia who accused Christians of trying to take over the country.

• A. Kugan's and all the deaths in custody were due to accidents and natural causes.

• two foreign workers were guilty of the murder of Darren Kang in Sri Hartamas a few years ago. Some coincidence, though, that Nazri Aziz's son was also said to be involved.

Don't worry, bro Ismail, gua percaya sama lu. I also believed you when you said that only one per cent of cops are corrupt.

Kesah Benar: Pengundi Hantu Marang 1990

KLIK IMEJ

— Sakmongkol AK47
The Malaysian Insider
Apr 09, 2012

Mengenai sombong Najib jangan cakap besar lah.

Malaysia will need to improve its performance in education

— Tunku Munawirah Putra
The Malaysian Insider
Apr 09, 2012

APRIL 9 — Our deputy prime minister/minister of education announced that the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Competitive Index (GCI) report 2011-2012 for Malaysia ranks the quality of our education system at No. 14 out of 142 countries. Malaysia should be proud of this accomplishment which is above many developed countries including the United Kingdom, the US and Germany.

We really should give ourselves a pat on the back for being ranked at par with these First World nations. But instead, many have voiced their concern over the misrepresentation or misinterpretation of the data by the minister. Many are not amused but aghast.

The WEF CGI report has, for three decades, been perceived as the world's most respected assessment of national competitiveness, by leading business executives around the world. The control sample is based on the opinion of 87 senior-level management in the business community in Malaysia. It is a snapshot of what they believe is true and they believe that Malaysia has one of the best education systems in the world.

Therefore, their opinion is credible and the report is not for dispute. The information is to be helpful for business communities to evaluate the viability of Malaysia as a global player in the corporate world, and specifically to serve the needs of this niche group only.

To put the WEF opinion poll into better perspective, the respondents would have belonged to the top echelons of the business community. It can be safe to assume that they are among the elite — high income, highly educated and living in the urban areas, specifically Kuala Lumpur, with their children in private and international schools and a plan for overseas tertiary education thereafter.

Therefore, to be ranked 14th would have highly likely been based on the quality of private and international education, and not the overall level of the Malaysian education system as a whole. The choices of good private and international schools are plentiful and thanks to the relaxation on local students' enrolment, these schools are available in every high-income housing area, making such schools very accessible to this group.

To determine overall students' performance and the education system as a whole, the international standardised test, Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and Trends in Mathematics and Science Survey (TIMSS) for Malaysia, would be a more accurate determinant of the current state of affairs in education.

The number of students assessed in Malaysia for PISA 2010 is 4,999 and TIMSS 2007 is 4,466. Cognizance and modesty would point us to evaluate our entire education internationally via PISA and TIMSS. Unfortunately, the reality is that we performed below average in both tests.

One would err to interpret the WEF GCI Education ranking report in isolation without considering the control environment of the sample and generalising that it represents the whole education system when it clearly does not. The WEF CGI shows a true picture of only a cross section of the population whilst PISA and TIMSS covers a wider spectrum.

At least now, nationally, we have been apprised of our ability to compare the level of education available to the wealthy minority versus what is available to the less fortunate majority. This goes to show that we have the capability to provide quality education locally and we should strive hard and work towards that benchmark.

Without doubt, these private and international schools offer mathematics and science in English. We wonder what the opinion would be if the following question was asked: "How likely are you to send your children to schools which offer science and mathematics in English?"

Of Nedim Nazri Aziz, gold-plated 'bubur ayam' and fine wines...

The lifestyle of cabinet ministers and their kins has again come under public scrutiny following the assault case allegedly involving Mohamad Nedim, son of de-facto Law minister Nazri Aziz.

The responses by netizens to news reports about the incident, based on a police report lodged by a security guard who alleged that Nedim and his bodyguards had manhandled him, reveal the depth of anger among ordinary citizens to the kind of behaviour displayed in public by the likes of Nedim.

In the past, such a public contempt made newspaper headlines, during the height of the constitutional crisis in 1993, sparked by the assault case involving the then Sultan of Johor and a hockey coach, both of whom had since deceased. It led to a controversial but popular amendment to clip the immunity hitherto enjoyed by royalties, particularly when faced with criminal charges.

In the case of Nedim, such contempt from the public as can be seen on online social media extends beyond his alleged misbehaviour. The focus has shifted to the fact that at the time of the incident, the young Nedim was driving a Porsche, and had bodyguards accompanying him in a luxury MPV.

One is now able to understand the claim by PKR de-facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, when he described the next general election a 'class war' between the rich and poor.

Nedim and his busy schedule

Harakahdaily has stumbled upon photographs of Nedim and his circle of friends posted under his account on the image-sharing site Lockerz (above), giving the public a glimpse of this personality, but more importantly, they offer a pictorial explanation of the rich-poor gap that continues to divide Malaysians.

From "chillin by the pool", participating in a convoy of luxury sports cars, holidaying in Europe to dining at fine restaurants, Nedim is the epitome of Malaysia's "one percent", the current parlance for elites of society who own the bulk of a country's wealth at the cost of 99 per cent of the population. One should not expect such characters to have any inkling about the complaints of rising costs of living that have coloured political debates around the world.

Of course, not unlike sons of recently deposed leaders of the Middle East, there are also the symbolic gestures by the rich, and in Nedim's case, he brandishes a photograph of him "breaking fast with anak yatim" (orphans).

SILVER SPOONS ... Nadem's 'bubur ayam' for sahur

His political views, needless to say, are a chip off the old block. In one posting on Lockerz, he published a Twitter message containing UMNO's now-familiar name-calling of election reforms coalition Bersih: "Kepala hotak PKR,DAP and ambiga babi!", with a poster saying that Bersih's rally was for the sake of a 'sodomite'.

He also has a picture to 'prove' his attendance in the optional Tarawih prayers during Ramadan, not to men! tion his favourite chicken porridge in a plate of gold, for his sahur (pre-dawn meal during Ramadan).

With such a lifestyle and display of wealth that is out of sync with the realities faced by Malaysian working adults, it is little wonder then that Nedim's father was at the forefront of attacks against the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for suggesting that cabinet members and families declare their wealth.

The young chairman

Nedim, according to his Twitter account, is chairman of Harrison (M) Berhad in addition to his post as director of Charisma Positief, which turns out to be a company selling used, presumably luxury, cars.

Presumably, this is the same 'Harrison' which has its website at harrisons a company which has its origins in Sabah, and concentrates its businesses in East Malaysia, dealing with "marketing, sales, warehousing and distribution of fast moving consumer goods, building materials, engineering products and agricultural chemicals; operation of shipping and travel agencies".

BOTTLED TASTE ... One of the wine brands available at Harrison's wine shop

One of its clients liste! d under its fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) division is Asia Pacific Brewery, dealing with such brands like Tiger Beer, Heineken, Anchor, Guinness, Anglia and Malta

Indeed, one of Harrison's subsidiaries, Harrisons Marketing and Services Sdn. Bhd, is set up to specialise in the business of fine wine, with a large retail store located at Jalan 222, Petaling Jaya.

In the unlikely situation that cabinet ministers are required to declare their wealth, these information, if true, would spell disaster to Nazri more than his son.

After all, Nedim has made it known that he is least bothered with the publicity around him.

"I seem to attract haters/poor media and I enjoy every moment of it," says a message introducing himself on Twitter.- harakahdaily

Anak menteri serang pak guard...

PSC Lynas mula mesyuarat minggu depan

Sekitar Dewan Rakyat

Where Anwar is ahead of Obama

FMT LETTER: From Harish Subramaniam, via e-mail

US President, Barack Obama, centered his entire election campaign on hope and change. "Change we can believe in" was Obama's mantra at every campaign speech he gave. The clear victory against John McCain showed that the message of change resonated strongly with the people tired of eight years of Republican rule under the clueless George W Bush.

Obama convinced more than enough Americans that America should and can change. Obama himself has not changed and stuck to his principles and beliefs in his first term even though it would be politically more expedient to dump some of them, e.g. Obamacare and the individual mandate for health insurance.

While Obama is consistent and has not changed to bolster his political fortunes, in the spirit of 'Malaysia Boleh', we have Anwar Ibrahim who has changed and changed again to better his chances of concentrating power in his person. In this way, Anwar is clearly ahead of Obama.

In the 70s, Anwar was the head of ABIM, an Islamic youth group which defined itself exclusively as an Islamic group. The divide he nurtured in order to build his own relevance was a Muslim vs Non-Muslim divide. This paid dividends when Dr Mahathir decided that Anwar was so good at dividing the people through religion that it would be best for Umno to co-opt him. Mahathir wanted to see if Anwar's proven skills could be used to divide the people a different way.

In the 80s and 90s, Anwar rose through the ranks in Umno to become deputy president and as we know, Umno is a party that defined itself exclusively as a Malay or Bumiputera group. The divide he nurtured in order to climb the ranks of Umno and reach the very top was a Malay vs Chinese/Indian etc. or a Bumi vs Non-Bumi divide. What he achieved by playing up and reinforcing these racial divisions was the deputy presidency of Umno and the deputy prime ministership of the country.

In the 2000s, when wayward sex and corruption forced Anwar back from the pinnacle, he and his family formed a vehicle called KeADILan to divide Malaysians once again as liberals and conservatives. He would become the champion of anti-corruption, press freedom, anti-ISA, anti-affirmative action for the Malays etc. The very same issues he championed and defended just a few months earlier as deputy president of Umno. He knew this would make him hero of the urban elite.

A! n elite who were more concerned with national issues rather than those the BN was good at addressing i.e. developmental issues from roads to clinics to schools. This also catapulted him to international stardom at a time when the Washington consensus was looking for Eastern puppets to repeat their mantras to 'ignorant' third world audiences. The dividends for this are still paying off till today in the form of foreign funding and grandstanding opportunities from and with foreign leaders and figures.

In the 2010s and even leading up to 2008, when his utter defeat at the hands of the hapless Pak Lah forced his family party KeADILan to the brink of extinction in 2004, Anwar would try the latest form of his dividing game. He would cobble together the left-leaning DAP and the simple-living PAS to put together a class war.

He would now pitt Malaysians against each other on the traditional Western basis of rich and poor. The dividends he has gained from this division is coming within 16 seats of capturing the Federal Government in the 2008 election and becoming the leader of the Opposition.

When a man is first an ultra-Islamic leader who can threaten a Government, to an ultra-Malay leader who can put fear into the hearts of Chinese and Indians, to a liberal leader who can fight against Government on all issues he used to champion just months before to a leader of the poor who can wreck the economy forever and therefore plunge the poor into ever more desperate straits if he takes charge, Malaysians have to again ask;

Ultra-Muslim to ultra-Malay to ultra-Liberal to ultra-Class Warrior? Who is Anwar really? Will we ever know?

He has divided Malaysians in four different ways over 40 years, how will he divide Malaysians once again when he becomes PM? Anwar can and will take the 'Malaysia Boleh' slogan to the next level by changing again and dividing again. PKR, DAP and PAS have to think carefully as they can still get rid of Anwar and all his divisiveness and put forward a leader who ha! s the be st interests of all Malaysians at heart.

UUCA changes insulting, say students

PETALING JAYA: Student activists have denounced proposed changes to the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) as "insulting".

They say that the main amendment, which would allow students to join political parties, held little meaning for them.

"Allowing students to join political parties is nothing to be proud of," student activist Adam Adli told FMT.

"Nothing much can be done by merely joining a political party. They are insulting students by doing this."

He said students were demanding the right to full political expression.

"Much bigger things need to be done, like looking at the right to form unions."

Adam shot to public notice last October, when he lowered a flag bearing the Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's portrait during a protest outside the Umno headquarters here. He has since been suspended from the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris for three semesters.

He said the UUCA should have been abolished altogether.

The amendments were tabled in Parliament today. While allowing tertiary-level students to join political parties, they bar these students from contesting in campus elections and from campaigning for their parties inside campuses.

The amendments also give university authorities the power to decide which organisations students could not join.

In April 2010, four Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia students were hauled up for campaigning during the Hulu Selangor by-election, an act prohibited by the UUCA.

The Court of Appeal has since ruled that the prohibition of political campaigning went against Article 10 of the Federal Constitution, which provides for freedom of expression.

Looking at the larger issue

According to Malaysian Students Solidarity (SMM) chairman Muhammad Safwan Anang, no student for or against the UUCA wanted any amendments to the law.

"Even the pro-government, pro-Najib students did not want the UUCA to be amended," he said.

"We don't know whose wish it was to amend Section 15. The larger issue here is student autonomy, not membership in a political party. Give us the ability to run campus elections ourselves.

He too called for total abolition of the law. "These amendments are only cosmetic," he said.

He also said the amendments in fact allowed for further politicise the student realm, adding that Umno had started stepping into campuses.

Higher Education Minister Khaled Nordin, who tabled the amendments today, said the changes were aimed at curbing the influence of political parties on campuses.

Petronas will fold if Pakatan takes over

BANGI: Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today ridiculed Pakatan Rakyat's plan to abolish the students' loan scheme and offset it using the oil income, saying the idea would bankrupt the country's oil company Petronas.

He called the idea mooted by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim an irresponsible populist measure proposed without considering the repercussions.

Weak exports and domestic market makes oil Malaysia's major income contributor. Muhyiddin claimed Petronas would have to spend as much as RM43 billion to offset the loans, something the country can't afford.

"Petronas is a company and if we squeeze it dry, how is it supposed to reinvest? So how is it supposed to generate money from other fields? Anwar can suggest that (as) he has no responsibility.

"We in Barisan Nasional have experience and we know it is not possible to do this," he told reporters here, adding that other countries have raised their taxes just to cover their education bill.

Anwar recently dismissed Putrajaya's argument that abolishing the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan scheme would cost taxpayers RM43 billion.

Higher taxes

The former deputy prime minister claimed it was possible to scrap the scheme if the government maintained fiscal discipline through eliminating corruption.

He said the country's RM150 billion revenue could easily finance Pakatan Rakyat's plan to rid of PTPTN if most of the money were not was wasted on construction projects rife with abuses that resulted in ballooning costs.

Pakatan had made the PTPTN issue one of its key fodder for the elections, riding on the wave of anger from majority of the country's graduates coping with loan repayments amid soaring inflations.

Students, led by Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM), are planning to hold a rally next month calling for the abolition of the PTPTN. They argued that education should be made free.

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, however, said the idea was not feasible unless higher taxes were imposed, an idea that he said would burden voters.

Muhyiddin, who is also the education minister, said PTPTN was necessary for the country's future in education and it is the responsibility of those who received the loans to repay them.

Altantuya's dad,"I did not take even a single ringgit from the Malaysian government"...

NONESetev Shaariibuu, the father of murdered Mongolian national Altantuya,  has denied talk that he had been paid to shut up.

"I deny this. I did not take even a single ringgit from the Malaysian government," he said through an interpreter, at a press conference in Parliament House today.

Setev said that he was made aware of the accusations against him from a posting on video-sharing site Youtube.

The rumour began to circulate shortly after political consultant Abdul Razak Baginda was acquitted of all charges in connection with the murder.

altantuya razak baginda mongolian murder case 030907The trial established that Altantuya had been shot dead and then blown up with military-grade explosives by two Malaysian Special Action Unit officers in 2006.

Setev explained that he is currently in Malaysia to seek closure of his daughter's death, as many questions remain unanswered despite the fact that the two police personnel have been found guilty of murder.

"You know me. This is the second time I am here. Why am I here? I have travelled the world seeking justice," he said, adding that he is also representing Atantya's children's interests.

'Still no answers'

He said that he knows that Malaysians in general are not responsible for what happened, but ! lamented that the government has done nothing for the last six years to help end his search.

Although the Mongolian government has issued several diplomatic notes to Malaysia, "there have been no answers".

"I don't understand how there has been no response to official communiques between two sovereign nations," he said.

"najib special address malaysia day 150911I want (the government and Malaysians) to solve this case as soon as possible. I want to take my girl home, to bury her in her own country."

Asked what else he might do to fight his case, he said that he may try to meet with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak again.

"Najib ran away when I wanted to meet him last time. I want to meet him again, not as a minister but as a father and a man," said Setev.

An elite who were more concerned with national issues rather than those the BN was good at addressing i.e. developmental issues from roads to clinics to schools.

When a man is first an ultra-Islamic leader who can threaten a Government, to an ultra-Malay leader who can put fear into the hearts of Chinese and Indians, to a liberal leader who can fight against Government on all issues he used to champion just months before to a leader of the poor who can wreck the economy forever and therefore plunge the poor into ever more desperate straits if he takes charge, Malaysians have to again ask;

PKR, DAP and PAS have to think carefully as they can still get rid of Anwar and all his divisiveness and put forward a leader who has the best interests of all Malaysians at heart.

PKR gesa keluarga Shahrizat cagar harta peribadi

Sekitar Dewan Rakyat

The power of LGBT votes in Malaysia

FMT LETTER: From Pang Khee Teik, via e-mail

Around the world, LGBTs represent around 3 to 10 % of the population. Malaysian homo sapiens are not more homo. So it is certainly not 30 % here as recently claimed by a counsellor in Utusan.

This counsellor said his data is solid because he heard it from his gay clients who are being cured of gayness by him. This is what happens when people have a simplistic understanding about the world. This is how our education has failed us.

The Ministry of Education is not the only institution that has failed us. All other Ministries, either in promoting discrimination and misunderstanding of LGBTs or keeping silent when we are discriminated, have also failed us.

But the country has not only failed the LGBTs. It has failed all minorities. This government has only been manipulating and pandering to the majority because it is interested in their votes. This is where they are wrong.

The upcoming General Elections will be a close fight. In many constituencies, the difference between the winning candidate and the losing candidate will be about 3 to 10 % of the votes, the same percentage of LGBTs in society.

LGBT voters therefore make up that difference between winning and losing. With the majority split half and half to either coalition, the fates of this election lies in the fabulous hands of the minorities.

Whether we are out and proud LGBTs or we are in the closet or we are friends and families of LGBTs, we must vote the candidate most likely to create a better future for everyone, minorities and all.

So all you MP wannabes who want our votes?

1 Be nice to us.

2 We don't need special treatment. We don't need to be cured. We are fine as we are. We just want equality. Treat us all with respect.

3 We are a peaceful people. We want to make peace with ourselves. We want to make peace with others. Yet many are fighting us. We are not surprised. It is because they are ignorant about us, they misunderstand us. Your task is not to take sides, not to censor, not to ban. Your task is to facilitate peace making. And understanding leads to peace.

4 Give us space to be who we are and to promote our rights. We want to fully participate in society. We are tired of simply existing in the shadows where it becomes easy for others to mistreat us. We want to help make Malaysia a better home for everyone.

5 Educate yourself about us. Talk to us. Hear our side.

6 Educate the public about us. Promote understanding. Give us space to talk about ourselves.

7 Stop saying stupid shit about us or other minorities.

8 Apologise for your party's stupid shit. Call on your own members to apologise when they say stupid shit.

9 You don't only represent the people who vote for you. You don't represent the majority only. For the majority certainly doesn't represent the minorities. You represent all.

10 Be nice to everyone, especially minorities. Malaysia is big enough for us all.

Seriously, we are watching you now. We have families and friends who care about us too. So don't mess with us. We are the king and queen makers.

The writer is the co-founder of annual sexuality rights festival Seksualiti Merdeka. Though banned by the police on Nov 2011, Seksualiti Merdeka vows to keep fighting for the rights of LGBTs in Malaysia.

Lift menders bring relief to disabled couple

PETALING JAYA: Technicians are currently repairing the lifts at a Selayang public housing project (PPRT) that malfunctioned on Friday and caused a weekend of distress to a disabled couple.

A source from lift suppliers Dover Elevators Sdn Bhd said the repairs were delayed because workers could not gain access to equipment during the weekend.

He told FMT the company despatched technicians to the Taman Wahyu 2 flats this morning and they were attending to the problem.

"It is not that the repairing process was deliberately delayed," he said. "We could not access equipment from our office during the weekend.

"Also, the flat's management office was closed as well. So even if we had the equipment, we could not access the motor room of the affected block."

Yesterday FMT highlighted the plight of a wheelchair bound couple who said they had suffered loss of wages because two of the three lifts in their block of flats had broken down. The only working lift does not stop at the first floor, where they reside.

The husband, 40-year-old A Thangarajoo, said technicians did some repairs on Friday, but the lifts malfunctioned again on Saturday.

He said he had no choice but to crawl up and down the stairs to get groceries for the household and provisions for his hawker stall.

Contacted today, Thangarajoo confirmed that the lifts were being repaired and said he was relieved.

He said his wife's employer had cut his wife's salary by RM600 because she missed work on the weekend.

"I'm just glad that the problem it is being rectified now," he said.

Talk cock award

Jangan risau K? You pi main bola. Najib take care your land for you ok? Ha! tu rakyat yg patuh. Bagus....bagus....pi sekarang.

One of the most ludicrous statements he's ever made must be Najib's announcement yesterday that 50 of the best footballers from FELDA schemes will receive training in the sport at the Cardiff Football Academy! Najib also said that the stint in Britain was part of efforts to develop the sport as an industry and a nation-building tool. Develope the sport as an industry and a nation-building tool???  I thought sports is developed for the love of sports. Obviously, in Malaysia everything is boiled down to Ringgit and Sen and politics. And I never even knew that FELDA schemes were a hotbed of football talent waiting to explode on the World Cup arena. But I suppose it is an attempt, no matter how silly, to divert attention from the fact that FELDA people are about to be fucked big time.

Tabung Haji moved RM300k to CEO's account...

A PAS parliamentarian has questioned the alleged transfer of over RM300,000 from Tabung Haji to the private account of its CEO, Ismee Ismail.

NONE"The government and Tabung Haji must explain this," Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar told reporters in the Parliament lobby today.

"Deputy Finance Minister Donald Lim had answered this in Parliament (and) said it is according to procedure, but he failed to say why. What was the money for?

Mahfuz said the money could not have been in payment of Ismee's salary, "which amounts to RM85,000 a month".

He distributed copies of a Tabung Haji document which detailed an order from the chief financial officer to the company's banker, instructing the telegraphic transfer of the money to Ismee' personal account.- malaysiakini

Dayak union rejects Masing, Jabu

KUCHING: Fed up with Senior Minister James Masing's disinterest in their affairs, the 100,000- strong members of Sarawak Dayak National Union recently rejected his presidency and elected instead his arch political rival William Mawan.

According to the union's deputy president John Anthony Brian, Masing, who is also State Land Development Minister, had never responded to the union's invitation to be its patron of its functions nor has he contributed to SDNU's coffers.

"We often invited him, but he failed to respond to our invitation to be a patron of a Gawai Dayak function, not to mention donating funds to SDNU.

"He just refused to respond to the union's functions. So how could the union members want him to be their president?" asked Brian, adding that members themselves were clueless as to what Masing was thinking.

Brian was responding to Masing's statement that a full-time politician should not be elected as SDNU president.

This, however, did not stop members from voting in Mawan, who is Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) president.

Mawan was elected unopposed as president of the 66-year-old union, which is one of the most influential Dayak NGOs in the state. Kapit MP, Alexander Nanta Linggi, was elected deputy president.

Masing, who is Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president, is rumoured to be miffed by the turn of events. But the union feels that Mawan's election is justified.

'Interfering wife of a leader'

Mawan is not only committed to the cause of the Dayaks, but has never failed to attend its functions, Brian said, adding that he even donated some funds to the union.

"We had a discussion among our members and decided to approach Mawan to be our president, and he accepted our invitation.

"We have willingly accepted a new leader to take over the union, especially someone like Mawan. We believe Mawan can help solve some of the problems like restarting the stalled the Rumah Dayak project as well as some other projects which the union has proposed to build on its own land.

"Our projects had also been cancelled even after agreements were signed just because a wife of a senior Dayak minister had complained to the State Planning Authority not to entertain our proposals," Brian said.

Although he did not name the person, it was learnt that the "wife" is Empiang Jabu. Empiang is the wife of Deputy Chief Minister Alfred Jabu Anak Numpang. She is also the president of Sarawak Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS).

On why SDNU had not approached Jabu to helm the union, Brian said that Jabu had always been critical of the union since the time it was headed by Daniel Tajem, former president of the defunct Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak in the early 1980s.

"Jabu is not the right person. He has been criticising nearly all Dayak non-governmental organisations.

"So instead of uniting the Dayaks, especially the Ibans, Jabu keeps them away from the union," said Brian.

'Dayak unity elusive'

Meanwhile, Masing said that it was not wise for active politicians to head the union because their inherent enemies would tend to follow them wherever they went.

"Because of this, unity is an elusive dream," he said.

He said that he had been approached to head the union, but had to reject it.

Howerver, Masing gave an assurance that he would assist the union behind the scene if needed.

In his acceptance speech, Mawan called on members to cast aside past problems and political affiliations so that the union could move forward.

"Unity must prevail and past issues should never be allowed to become distractions. Now is the time to uphold the spirit of working together and moving forward," he said.

Liow: Medical council not biased

KUALA LUMPUR: Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai denied that the Malaysia Medical Council (MMC) was practising double standard in sending local medical students to overseas.

"That's not true. MMC is a professional body and we cannot have this problem," said Liow when met at the Parliament today.

Last month, a former medical student from Ukraine alleged that students doing medical courses in Baltic countries were compelled to do a foundation course while those going to Egypt and Jordan were exempted.

"If a student plans to do a medical programme in Ukraine for example, he has to score at least five Bs in SPM each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Additional Mathematics and another optional subject."

"A student would be required to sit for a foundation course or other pre-university examinations like STPM, Matriculation and A Levels. This is set by MMC," said the student.

But those going to universities in Jordan and Egypt, the student alleged, were seemed to be given a "special privilege" as they are not required to undergo the foundation course.

Liow promised to probe the matter. "I'll double check on the matter and we will be transparent," said Liow.

Internal probe on MACC trio still on

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Abu Kassim Mohamed today said that an internal probe against the three officers implicated in Teoh Beng Hock's death was still ongoing, despite almost a year after the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) named the trio.

"We've forwarded the case to a disciplinary panel, which is headed by former Court of Appeal judge Mohd Noor Abdullah and four other independent members," Abu Kassim told reporters at Parliament today.

He said that he was informed that the panel was still giving an opportunity to the three officers, namely the then Selangor MACC deputy director Hishamuddin Hashim and his subordinates Mohd Anuar Ismail and Mohd Ashraf Mohd Yunus, to explain their case.

"We're still waiting for their explanation…" he said.

Abu Kassim declined to say what sort of disciplinary action the panel will take after deliberating the case, but added, however, that it would be done according to whatever procedures the officers had gone against.

On the Teoh family's request to have a dialogue with him and MACC over their youngest son's death, Abu Kassim said he welcomed it.

"They can come to MACC anytime. I welcome that," he said.

On Satuday, Teoh's sister Lee Lan, marched to the Selangor MACC headquarters in protest against the government's decision not to prosecute anyone over Teoh's death.

She said that her family was seeking an "open and transparent dialogue" with Abu Kassim to once and for all put a closure to the case.

Open verdict

On Thursday, it was revealed in Parliament that the Attorney-General's Chambers has closed its case on Teoh's death and had cleared the three MACC officers named in the RCI report – which had found that Teoh was driven to suicide following aggressive interrogation – of all offences.

Teoh, 30, was the political aide of Selangor executive council member Ean Yong Hian Wah. He was found dead on July 16, 2009, on the fifth-floor corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after he was questioned overnight by MACC officers on the 14th floor.

An inquest was held but could only reach an "open verdict". A RCI was subsequently held and the five-man RCI panel, headed by then federal court judge James Foong, had singled out the three officers who were involved in Teoh's interrogations in their report in July 21, last year.

The Bar Council, which played an active role in the RCI into Teoh's death, had urged the A-G to clarify and explain his decision.

Contrary to the RCI report which named the three men, the Bar Council had recommended that five MACC officers be investigated for culpable homicide.

The five officers include Hishamuddin, Mohd Anuar and Mohd Ashraf as well as Selangor MACC investigations chief, Hairul Ilham Hamzah, and Klang MACC assistant enforcement officer Zulkefly Aziz.

The Bar had recommended that the five be investigated under Section 304A of the Penal Code for causing the death of Teoh via negligence.

Ucapan Setiausaha PKR Rembau mengimbai sejarah parti di hari keADILan

SAMBUTAN 13 TAHUN PARTI KEADILAN
4 April 2012, Rembau, Negeri Sembilan

Dibaca oleh Sdr Norazizi - Setiausaha Parti Keadilan Rakyat Cabang Rembau

a. Dr. Mohamad Rafie Bin Ab Malek
Presiden Penaja, Parti Malaysia Baru (PMB)

b. Sdr. Norizam Yasin
Presiden Penaja, Parti Himpunan Angkatan Keadilan (HAK)

c. Sdr. Suhaimi Salleh
Setiausaha Agong Penaja, Parti Angkatan Reformasi Malaysia (ARM)

14. Pada ketika itu tiada langsung sebarang peruntukan kewangan dari mana-man! a pihak, maka anak-anak muda inilah yang telah mengeluarkan semua belanja untuk menampung semua kos termasuk sewaan di Hotel Renaissance dan bahan cetakan.

Reformasi, Reformasi, Reformasi.......TAKBIR!!
