Christianity threats?

  • The Johor Education Department (JED) and the Johor State Religious Department plans to organize a seminar. The theme of the seminar is about teacher's role in strengthening the Islamic faith and addressing the threat of Christianity. As a result of the program, there has been strong reaction from both the Muslims and the Christians. A non-issue has been made into a major issue, which actually is a slap in face of the organizers. It reflects their shortsightedness.
  • I firmly believe there is nothing wrong for anyone to organize such seminar. It is not wrong even for the Christians to have a seminar on similar topics like "threat of Malaysian Muslims on Christians". Any religious group can organize such seminar. However what are not acceptable is the involvement of the JED as the co-organizer and the involvement of teachers via the department. The MOE and the various ED are supposed to be color blind and they are suppose to be religiously neutral. In a school setting there are Muslim and Non-Muslim teachers as well as students. If MOE do not maintain such neutrality, than the national school will eventually be mono-ethnic school. What happen to national unity? What will happen to Malaysia? Why is that some Muslims fear the Christians?
  • Islam as a religion is backed by the constitution and is part of the government system. Christianity is not and yet the Muslims are scared about the Christians? This fear is self perpetuated by Muslims with low quality of faith. The Christians don't point a gun to the head of a Muslim and force the person to become Christian. In reality, many Muslims left Islam not because of the attraction of Christianity but because of the Muslims themselves pushed them out with their insensitive and illogical approach in perpetuating Islam.
  •  I'm for one is extremely pissed with the unreasonable committee members of my mosque. My request for a reasonable volume Azan has gone to deaf ears. In fact it appears that the more I raised the issue the louder is the Azan. The human ear has a limited threshold. Anything beyond certain decibels, it will not sound like Azan but merely noise. Why can't they appreciate that? Unfortunately my mosque committee members are insensitive of the community views. Proposal like sound mapping has been ignored. My neighborhood non-Muslims are laughing at us. They asked is this Islam is all about? The other Muslims in my neighbor don't want to raise the issue because they felt it is "sensitive".  They took the simple action of closing their doors and windows. Doesn't the Mosque committee see that they are an extension or represent the religion and their current action only makes Islam looks bad? They are pushing more and more people away from the religion rather than attracting people to it. The way I see it, Muslims should not blame others if one of them choose to convert to another religion. They need to blame themselves for having a shortsighted view and lack of foresight in approaching the community. I am fed up the people who represent Islam and only Allah knows how close am I about giving up this religion that I have profess since birth. It has nothing to do with Christians. Its all due to the torch bearers of Islam in my Taman. One day if I choose to walk out from this religion, they should shoulder all the blame and dosa.

RM445m suit: Anwar rejects subpoena

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim had refused to accept a subpoena compelling him to turn up in court over the case of businessman Low Thiam Hoe, who is being sued by Hong Leong Finance Bhd (HLFB) over a breach of repayment suit involving RM445 million syndicated loans given in 1997, the High Court here was told today.

Low's lawyer D Paramalingam said an attempt was made to serve the subpoena on Anwar yesterday, but failed. This was the second attempt this week.

"We tried to serve it on Anwar at Parliament yesterday evening but he refused to accept it. We will now move the court to give the necessary orders," Paramalingam said.

It is learnt that if Anwar continues avoiding the subpoena, Low's lawyers may apply for a warrant of arrest.

The court will decide on April 6 on an application by HLFB's lawyers to set aside two of the subpoenas the court has issued – on Anwar and HLFB executive chairman Quek Leng Chan.

Aside from Quek and Anwar, Low's defence had also last week obtained the subpoenas for Mohd Faiz Abdullah, who was Anwar's speech writer, and Hamzah Harun – both former director and shareholder of Arus Murni Sdn Bhd.

HLFB's lawyer Andrew Chiew today argued that it was "almost vexatious" to call Quek and Anwar as witnesses as they were "nowhere close" to the case and none of the evidence heard today shows that the two had any value to add to the case.

On March 19, the presiding judge Hadhariah Syed Ismail dismissed Low's application to amend his defence statement to include Anwar as "the person behind the deal".

In rejecting his application, Hadhariah said it was made at the "eleventh hour" and had come too late in the course of the trial.

However, the court had last week allowed the defence to subpoena the four individuals. Six witnesses of the plaintiff had already taken the stand.

In 1998, Hong Leong Finance filed a suit against Low, Mekuritek Sdn Bhd and Arus Murni over non-payment of the syndicated loans amounting to RM445 million.

The loans were given to the parties in a bid to acquire financial institution Arus Murni Corporation Bhd (AMCB) which owns Kewangan Bersatu Bhd (KBB). Each defendant was sued for over RM28 million plus interest for the non-repayment of the loans.

In 1999, Low filed a counter-claim against HLFB, HLG Capital Markets Sdn Bhd and Hong Leong Credit Bhd's former CEO Seow Lun Hoo asking for damages for alleged wrongful or negligent advice.

Hong Leong also filed another suit against Mekuritek and three guarantors – Hussin Abdul Karim, Agus Salim Mohd Dom and Abdullah Abd Karim Bajerai – as defendants for a similar claim of RM28 million.

Friendly loan

Hamzah had taken the stand after the court heard from Low earlier in the morning.

He told the court that Hong Leong initiated legal proceedings to remove all the directors of AMCB right after the sacking of Anwar in 1998. (Anwar was then the deputy prime minister and finance minister.)

Paramalingam: Did HLFB finally acquire KBB?

Hamzah: No

Paramalingam: Nothing happened?

Hamzah: Nothing happened until September 1998.

Paramalingam: What happened in September 1998?

Hamzah: The sacking of Anwar Ibrahim.

Hamzah also told the court this syndicated loan was a "friendly loan" which was arranged by Hong Leong Credit Bhd's former CEO Seow Lun Hoo.

He also said that there were no credit assessments on himself and other nominees before the loans were given.

Hamzah also said that when HLFB issued a margin call notice in December 1997, the borrowers decided to ignore it as Seow had said it was "all right".

Hamzah also claimed that Seow had told him that "we have to get out of this together" as well.

Chiew, during cross-examination, suggested that it was impossible that seven different banks had given syndicated loans without considering the borrower's credentials or doing a credit check.

However, Hamzah said: "It is possible, sometimes banks just rely on another bank's assessments."

House can’t impeach Anwar, says Deputy Speaker

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat's Deputy Speaker today dampened the hopes of those who want to see Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim go through an impeachment process.

Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar told a press conference at Parliament House that neither Parliament's standing orders nor the Federal Constitution had any such provision.

"But if there is a motion brought in the House, it's up to the Speaker's discretion to allow it to be discussed or not," he said.

Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia today quoted the ASEAN Human Rights Commissioner to Malaysia, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, as saying that parliamentarians could introduce a motion to impeach Anwar for alleged immoral behaviour.

Wan Junaidi, however, said the Dewan Rakyat could not remove a sitting MP unless a court of law had found him guilty of a criminal offence.

"We cannot use someone's private affairs as grounds for removing him," he said.

PKR vice president Tian Chua, the MP for Batu, said it was "stupid" for Shafee to come up with such a statement.

"Even a prime minister cannot be impeached," he said. "What is Shafee talking about? It's nonsensical."

Yusmadi Yusoff (PKR-Balik Pulau) said Shafee should understand that not everything practised in the United States was applicable in Malaysia. "He probably thought about former US president Richard Nixon being impeached over the Watergate scandal in the 1970s and wanted the same to be done here."

He described Shafee's statement as "weird", saying the Umno-aligned lawyer should have known better than to bring up such a question.

"Shafee's statement and conduct show that he is not fit to be a human rights commissioner," he said.

Kembara Ke Tempat Lama: Kenangan Dan Sayang

KEMBARA KE TEMPAT LAMA: KENANGAN DAN SAYANG
Prof Madya Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin

Setelah 15 tahun meninggalkan University of Jordan, saya kembali melawat semula. Perasaan saya terbang bersama keindahan lampau.

Gambar: Penulis Dalam University of Jordan

Mudah masuk, mudah faham. Melihat wajah pun sudah mengembirakan perasaan. Kehadirannya dinanti, maka ilmunya mudah dinikmati. Jika guru dibenci, segala ilmunya menjadi pahit.

Saya masih terasa betapa nikmat semasa saya mencium dahi al-Syeikh Muhammad Salih ibn Uthaimin r.h. Beliau seorang yang amat soleh dan alim. Ratusan ribu muridnya. Ribuan manusia sering mengelilinginya.

Saya sayangkannya, walaupun beliau tidak kenal saya. Saya berdoa kepada Allah tentangnya. Banyak kali Allah rezekikan saya mencium dahinya.

Apabila kita mencintai guru, kita mencintai ilmu. Apabila kita mencintai ilmu, kita wajar mencintai guru.

Bau kedai kitab menggamit kenangan masa belajar.

Malaysia minta Isreal melobi agar KL jadi tuan rumah Persidangan Gas Dunia...

Gov't sought Israeli vote to host gas meet...

PKR has documentary evidence to prove that the Malaysian government had sought Israel's support and vote for it to host the World Gas Conference scheduled to be held on June 4-8.

NONEThe party's secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (left) said he has obtained reports, letters and other documents as proof of Umno's hypocrisy over its ties with Israel.

"The conference gathers major oil and gas companies from all over the world.

"The organisation of the conference is based on vote by members of the International Gas Union (IGU) which includes Malaysia, Russia, Israel, Brunei, Indonesia and some others.

"The government had lobbied to hold the conference and sought Israel's help to support Malaysia's candidacy as host.

"Malaysia also indirectly offered to manage the registration and accommodation of Israeli representatives who attended the 2005 IGU Conference in Tianjin, China," Saifuddin told the media in parliament house today.

mahathir ebook launching 091211 04He said the manner taken to seek Israel's help and blessings,! and als o to seek Wisma Putra's advise towards the organising of the event by the Malaysian Gas Association (MGA), which represents Petronas, and former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad as advisor, is questionable.

Saifuddin claimed PKR has evidence of Mahathir's and Wisma Putra's blessings for the MGA to appeal for Israel's support towards getting the rights to organise the triennial conference.

The PKR secretary-general also showed a letter written by a Malaysian representative to his Israeli counterpart, which verifies that Wisma Putra had approved the approach used for Malaysia to seek Israel's support.

Evidence of Umno's hyprocrisy

"Umno leaders' attitude in determining Wisma Putra's policy is against the desire of Malaysians who do not want any diplomatic relations with Israel.

"This expose proves Umno leadership's hypocrisy on issues pertaining to ties with Israel as it shows they want to establish diplomatic ties, and also proves that they are willing to bow down to get Israel's support.

"PKR urges Wisma Putra and Mahathir to state their stand on allowing the organisers to appeal for help from Israel as this is against the solidarity of Malaysians in supporting the Palestinian cause," said Saifuddin.

For the past few weeks Umno and its media have been attacking Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim over his
Wall Street Journal interview claiming that the Permatang Pauh MP supported the Israeli cause.

Anwar, however, claimed that the mainstream media had taken the report and his statement out of context.

Foreign Minister Anifah Aman had also said that Malaysia
does not have ties with Israel.-malaysiakini

Umno Youth dares ‘Confusing Master’

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Umno Youth chief Shaik Hussein Mydin has dared Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to include several vital issues in his imminent libel suit over the Bayan Mutiara fiasco.

Lim announced that he would take legal action against Shaikh and Umno-owned daily Utusan Malaysia for playing up religious sentiments by making claims that the state government had sold a reserved plot of land for a mosque to facilitate the Bayan Mutiara project.

Shaik said he wanted Lim to sue him not only for making the allegation, but also for his other allegations including that the Bayan Mutiara project award was not done via open tender and its process was not transparent and competent.

He also wanted Lim, whom he described as a "confusing master " to include his claim that the 41.6 ha Bayan Mutiara land was sold to Ivory Properties Group Bhd for an unrealistic sum of RM1.2 billion.

The state government sold the land at RM240 per sq ft to Ivory, which Umno claimed was below the market price of RM420.

The Umno Youth leader also criticised the five-year period given for the settlement of the land premium as "senseless" and that the project was shrouded by elements of corruption and breach of trust.

He also claimed that the DAP-helmed Pakatan Rakyat state government suffered losses for not carrying out the project on its own.

"Leave out Utusan just sue me. But don't just sue over the mosque land allegations. Include all these issues and I will reveal all in court," he told a press conference at the state Umno office here.

Present were state Umno deputy chief Musa Sheikh Fadzir, secretary Azhar Ibrahim and Youth wing vice-chief Norman Zahalan.

Police report lodged

Lim had accused Shaikh of "playing with religious sentiments" to slander the Penang government.

"I don't want to take legal action against him. But I don't have a choice. Let the truth be exposed in court," the chief minister had said.

But Shaikh said he was not playing with religious sentiments but merely protecting the interests and rights of Penang Muslims similar to how non-Muslims would safeguard theirs.

"To me, Lim is not a chief minister. He is a confusing master," he rebuked.

With Shaikh declaring that he would not be cowed by Lim's threat, the Bayan Mutiara fiasco was now heading towards an interesting legal wrangle, provided that the DAP secretary-general filed the suit.

This morning, a group of students from Universiti Sains Malaysia lodged a police report against Lim's administration over the Bayan Mutiara fiasco.

In the report lodged with the Jalan Patani police station by Students Voice of Peace chairman Muhamad Mukhlis Maghribi, the group called on the police to probe whether the change in the project plan was done according to procedure.

The group also wanted the police to investigate whether the sale of plots reserved for mosques and schools infringed the law.

In the Utusan article, Shaikh said that the original plan had been approved the Penang Municipal Council on Oct 30, 2006. That plot was given to the Penang Islamic Affairs Council and gazetted under the council.

Shaik urged Lim to compensate the sold mosque land with another plot.

Public prosecutor can order wire taps

KUALA LUMPUR: A public prosecutor can give law enforcers the power to intercept a communications network if relevant information regarding an investigation or offence can be found there.

Citing the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, Minister of Information, Communications and Culture Rais Yatim said that unless this power was given, no one in his ministry was allowed to perform such a tap.

"Section 252 of the Act gives power to a public prosecutor to allow law enforcement and investigative agents to perform a lawful interception on the condition that these communications might contain relevant information for the purpose of an investigation or offence under the Act of under a subsidiary legislation.

"The ministry's jurisdiction in carrying out lawful communication interception for enforcement and investigation purposes is subject only to the power provided under the Act… it can only be performed with the permission and power of the public prosecutor," he said.

Rais said this in a parliamentary written response to Bukit Bendera MP (DAP) Liew Chin Tong, who wanted to know what laws allowed the authorities to tap phone lines and emails.

He also asked the minister to list the number of interception cases from 1998 until now, and for it to be divided by criminal suspects, politicians and foreigners.

In his reply, the minister did not answer this query.

However, the minister said that other acts allowed for communication interception to take place.

He listed them down as:

  • Kidnapping Act 1961, under the Home Ministry (KDN).
  • Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988, under the National Anti-Drug Agency and KDN.
  • Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.
  • Strategic Trade Act 2010, under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).

Persempadanan semula hanya selepas PRU13

Sekitar Dewan Rakyat

Bagimanapun Mohamed Nazri berkata SPR mengalu-alukan maklumat sekiranya ada bukti kukuh pendatang asing diberi hak mengundi seterusnya membolehkan SPR menjalankan siasatan lanjut.

Corruption: Files on Gani, Bakri, Musa closed

SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commissions (MACC) has closed the files on the corruption cases brought against Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail, Crime Investigations Department director Bakri Zinin, and former Inspector-General of Police Musa Hasan.

MACC's operations deputy director general Mohd Shukri Abdull said: "We have decided to close our investigation papers until and unless someone brings forth new evidence."

Shukri was commenting on allegations of graft made by former Commercial Crime Investigations Department director Ramli Yusoff.

Ramli had filed the case two years ago.

Shukri said this during a press conference after being a panellist at a forum entitled "Political Corruption: Perception or Reality" organised by the Karangkraf Group.

He said MACC's investigations indicated that there was lack of evidence.

"There is no evidence against the two of them and weak evidence against the third," Shukri said.

To another question, he urged parties wishing to file a report to do so without fanfare.

"Many investigations have been affected when the complainant speaks to the press after filing a report," Shukri said.

"This troubles us since in most cases we have to rely on witness accounts. We also lose the element of surprise because witnesses might gang up to close our case," he added.

Pemimpin-pemimpin besar negara adalah orang Melayu, Ketua Setiausaha Kementerian-kementerian orang Melayu, KSN orang Melayu, Ketua Polis Negara orang Melayu, Ketua Turus Angkatan Tentera orang Melayu, pegawai-pegawai Daerah orang Melayu.

Apa lagi? Wakil-wakil rakyat dan penggubal dasar majoritinya orang Melayu. Tetapi kenapa Melayu masih layu..????

Hentikanlah!!!

Yet another blown Budget — Lim Sue Goan

MARCH 29 — The Finance Ministry has sought approval for a supplementary budget in the Dewan Rakyat every year for additional expenditure by various government agencies and ministries.

This time, it seeks a total of RM10.29 billion. It is the second additional expenditure application in a fiscal year, and many are "political expenditures".

The government's account is just like a household's account. A family with a total monthly income of RM5,000 allocated RM4,500 for spending. However, when they saw a lovely handbag, they spent RM2,000 to buy it, causing a RM1,500 deficit for the month. Since they were unable to make ends meet, they had to use their savings or borrow money from relatives. The family could be destroyed as the debts snowballed over years.

The country has been in fiscal deficit for 15 consecutive years because there is no proper control over expenditure. Oil revenues might still be able to sustain the huge expenditure today, but once we become a net oil importer, the "emperor's new clothes" will disappear.

In June last year, the government had requested an additional RM13.186 billion. This time, the government sought a supplementary budget amounting to RM10.29 billion, with some expenditure to be spent on preparations for the next general election. For example, a total of RM204.45 million has been allocated for the RM500 BR1M cash aid.

Last year, the government announced the cancellation and reduction of a number of toll charges, causing the Ministry of Works to pay a compensation amounting to RM100 million, which does not include the RM120.55 compensation for toll reduction of the Cheras-Kajang highway, which took effect in March this year.

To alleviate the people's burden, the government also increased subsidies for necessities. The additional fuel subsidy last year consumed RM4.45 billion.

The government had spent RM186.94 billion last year, far surpassing the RM181.6billion operating expenses tablet in the 2012 Budget.

Although the government's revenue had increased by 16.1 per cent last year, the expenditure had also increased by RM23.4billion.

It is expected that the government will continue to have much additional expenditure this year. For example, RM6 billion is expected to be needed for the seven to 13 per cent salary increments for civil servants. Also, after the surge of international crude oil prices, the subsidy for petrol increases by 10 sen to RM1.03 per litre.

If the election is further delayed, the expenditure would continue to rise as the Barisan Nasional government needs to keep the feel-good factor going.

The national debt is currently accounted for 54 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP), and it is not far from the dangerous level of 60 per cent. The national debt would go beyond the dangerous level in four or five years if we do not reduce expenses.

Therefore, the government is expected to reduce subsidies for petrol after the election. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Idris Jala also said that he hopes that the goods and services tax (GST) could be implemented after the election. If the government's annual revenue can be increased by RM25.7 billion, it would then enough to meet the urgent needs.

The deterioration of national financial situation and the implementation of the GST are national issues involving the people nationwide. These issues should be concerned and resolved by the ruling and opposition parties, but politicians have instead wasted time on minor issues.

Most members of the public can see only politics, but not a potential crisis. And everything would be too late when the crisis strikes. — mysinchew.com

Kayveas ‘never initiated’ entry into S’wak

KUCHING: Peninsular-based Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) Sarawak has come to its national president M Kayveas's defence claiming that the party's presence in Sarawak was at the bequest of locals.

State PPP vice-chairman Charles Liew said it was "never the initiative" of Kayveas.

Liew's defence of Kayveas came in the wake of verbal attacks by state Barisan Nasional leaders after he (Kayveas) had expressed disappointment at their refusal to accept PPP's help in the coming general election.

Speaking at a dinner here last Saturday, Kayveas also warned local component party leaders to be "careful" when making statements (about PPP) as they risk losing (PPP) 54,000-strong members' support.

Party Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) senior member Peter Minos had responded to Kayveas' statement with a stinging 'stop dreaming'  and 'PPP has nothing to offer'  comments alluding to the party disastrous outing in the 2008 general election.

Said Liew in a statement yesterday: "PPP is disappointed with Minos' remarks. He may not realise that it was Sarawakians who wanted PPP to come to Sarawak and was never the initiative of Kayveas.

"It is the spirit of BN that we (offered to) help the component parties… it is based on friends helping friends."

Liew reiterated that PPP Sarawak had 54,000 members and that these members were voters who would rally behind any BN candidate who were friendy to PPP.

"We will support BN candidates in the general election, but we would also like to say that anyone who rejects PPP, our members will reject the candidate.

"This is because they (party and candidates) do not need our votes," he said.

MOTO! GP SUPPO RT RACE ORGANISER BANNED FROM SEPANG CIRCUIT

A biking enthusiast who is also an organiser for Malaysian MotoGP Support race in Sepang Circuit has been banned from entering the track and its vicinity for all events indefinitely.

A chief editor for Bikerz Magazine and an administrator of Malaysia's biggest online biking forum at malaysianbikers.com.my or MBC, Abol Ismail has been a familiar face in Sepang Circuit for the past five years organising the small capacity (250cc and below) bike race.

Already a major headache for authority, small capacity illegal street bike racers or 'Mat Rempit' will occupy Kuala Lumpur roads during weekends in the wee hours. Police roadblocks are the norm on Friday and Saturday nights. Thus, legal races at a proper circuit with adequate attire have been promoted to curb this neverending issue. With that intention in mind, Abol had pooled many of these racers to legally compete at Sepang Circuit.

While the death of MotoGP rider Marco Simonchelli on the fateful Sepang Circuit in October leaves many of us heartbroken, many incidents have not been reported offtrack. Fans worldwide have been disgusted by how the track marshals dropped the racer's body while carrying him on a stretcher. Amateur videos uploaded at YouTube have been viewed by the thousands. Many local fans are complaining at the cutthroat food and beverages prices which many thought were similar to F1 even though the quality is not.

An incident at the 2011 Malaysian MotoGP on 23rd October where track officers had mishandled and accused Abol of being an illegal ticket seller has prompted an ensuing battle between these two unlikely parties. Abol was dragged to a nearby police station which was more than 30 meters away. Sepang Circuit CEO, Razlan Razali defended his staff of the situation even though the police thought it was a misunderstanding. The police even! let him go without any conditions.

At a recent local race, Abol received a threatening call from a circuit official to avoid coming to the race he organised and had to appoint someone on his behalf. The officer even asked him to officially write a letter to not pursue his legal intention towards the track. Started in 1999, this could be the first and only case where someone is banned from coming to his own organised event at Sepang Circuit, a public place.

Owned by Malaysian government with public money, runned by Chairman Mokhzani Mahathir (son of ex Premier) and CEO Razlan Razali (Mokhzani's cousin) the Sepang Circuit management have long been abusing the system to satisfy their needs. Razlan is more interested to run concerts and parties at the circuit rather than racing.

Phantom voters,'pendatang haram' with blue Mycards and fraud will be rampant in 13th GE...

ambiga question by police over seksualiti merdeka 071111 1Ng Yuen Chan has occupied the same room for 20 years, so the retiree was surprised to learn recently that he had two Indian Malaysian women as roommates.

They were phantom voters registered at his home in Seremban, capital of Negri Sembilan, a key political battleground state and one of many such cases fueling fear of possible fraud in coming elections in the multi-racial country.

"The government should take action. These people don't exist here," Ng said angrily.

Opposition election workers and independent vote-reform advocates say a rash of irregularities could tip the balance in what may be a tight contest between the long-ruling BN coalition and an upstart opposition. Campaigners warn that if the government does not address the issue, they could take to the streets again as they did in a protest by tens of thousands last year that was crushed by police.

"I certainly think the playing field is still very skewed. It could cost the opposition the win," said Ambiga Sreenivasan (right), co-chair of electoral reform group Bersih 2.0.

"If they (the government) don't commit to reform before the... election, there will be a Bersih 3.0 rally."

Bersih 2.0 and other critics allege the coalition, despite promising reform, is illegally registering non-resident supporters in shaky constituencies or those held by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's three-party alliance.

In one case near Ng's house, more than 60 people wer! e regist ered living in two apartment blocks that do not even exist, say opposition activists who have been scouring quarterly voter rolls compiled by the Election Commission.

The government denies a fraud campaign, and the commission says it is cleaning voter rolls. Late last year it purged more than 40,000 names that could not be accounted for, but the revelation only added to fears of widespread irregularities.

The commission also recently fired hundreds of staff after it was found they were responsible for registering voters twice, adding non-citizens, and other "negligence," government-controlled media reported.

Electoral roll a fundamental issue

NONEAnthony Loke (right), an opposition parliamentarian representing Ng's district, said a report by a government-appointed organisation found some 80,000 people were registered in just over 300 addresses, among other discrepancies.

"The most fundamental issue is the electoral roll. It must be cleaned up," he said. "If they don't clean up the roll, other changes are not as significant."

Bersih 2.0 and opposition parties led a rally in Kuala Lumpur last July to demand clean elections - 'Bersih' means clean - and were met by tear gas and water cannon. Some 1,600 people were arrested.

The rally gave voice to widespread suspicions documented in many cases over the years that the ruling coalition has routinely used fraud, vote-buying and a stranglehold on traditional media to stay in power.

bersih 2 rally guy fawkes mask 090711Stung by condemnation over the rally crackdown, Prime Minister ! Najib Ra zak set up a bi-partisan parliamentary panel in October to study possible reforms. A final report is due on Monday.

An interim report suggested measures including introducing indelible ink to prevent multiple voting, which the Election Commission has pledged to do.

"The main (recommendations) are all accepted and done already. Now we are busy doing the preparations," commission deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar told AFP.

But critics accuse the government of dragging its feet on far-reaching reform and ignoring calls to halt abuses like alleged vote-buying and preventing fair access to media.

New report on irregularities

NONEConcern has sharpened recently amid heavy speculation that the polls - due by next April - could be called within months.

"You can't expect BN to implement (all the) reforms for a system that has benefitted them for years," said Loke, also a member of the parliamentary reform panel.

In 2008, Anwar's three-party opposition alliance snatched away the BN's long-held two-thirds parliamentary majority and now holds four of Malaysia's 13 states, its highest ever number.

Bersih 2.0 has calculated the BN coalition won a parliamentary majority by only 27,000 votes.

Leading polling firm Merdeka Centre, along with another institute that monitors the electoral process, will launch a new report on such irregularities on Friday.

Ibrahim Suffian (left), head of the centre, said its research has found an "abnormal increase of voters" in closely contested constituencies.

"So it would affect the outcome of the election" in some ar! eas, he said

Nazri - no need to worry, no foreigners,or dubious voters coz voters must produce Mycard to vote...

There is no need to worry over the possibility of foreigners being registered as voters or cases of dubious voters, as they must produce their MyKad to register or vote.

NONE"No foreign citizen can be registered as a voter, as the identity card (MyKad) must be used in the registration process.

"As for dubious voters, they still need to produce an IC to vote. If they cannot do so, they cannot vote," Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Aziz (
right) told the Dewan Rakyat today.

He said this when winding up for the PM's Department in the debate on the royal address.

As such, Nazri said, foreigners or voters of dubious origin would not be able to vote as by right none of them would be able to produce a MyKad.

Nazri explained that this was in accordance to Article 119 of the constitution, which allows only Malaysians to vote.

"There are 33 levels of checks via the the ALIS system, which links agencies to the National Registration Department, and the system will reject voter registrations from those who are not citizens," argued the minister.

He was responding to concerns raised by opposition MPs while debating the royal address.

Electoral system in ruling government's favour

Cases of foreigners allege! dly regi stered as voters and of 42,000 dubious voters with incomplete information that the Election Commission itself admitted to have been opposition fodder to push for electoral reforms in a system they claim has been weighted to favour the ruling government.
NONE
Nazri also brushed aside the call by Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Ipoh Timor) for a special committee to ensure fair elections, saying that the parliamentary select committee (PSC) for electoral reform is already doing the job.

When Lim stood up to press the issue, arguing that the issue was the lack of transparency in the current system, not just the technicalities handled by the PSC, Nazri hit back at him.

"This is like what a Year Six student would say... Not what I would expect from a veteran parliamentarian like you.

"Why would you say something stupid like that? You were an MP when I was still in school," sniped the minister.

As Nazri continued his winding-up, more opposition MPs stood up to refer to issues concerning irregularities in the electoral system.

Special meeting with EC proposed

Saying that he did not have answers to the issues as they were  either new matters not raised during the debate or something that only the EC could answer, Nazri then proposed a special meeting to address those concerns.

"Since all the MPs are here, I suggest that we meet with the EC in the coming weeks, maybe on the 16th of next month, and I shall be there myself, so that the commission can answer.

"If possible, we can give advance notice so they can come prepared with answers," offered Nazri.

The opposition MPs agreed and said that they looked forward to the meeting.- malaysiakini

comments...

AngryBird - I do not know whether Nazri is bodoh, bangang or bahlul. Many foreigners in Sabah have acquired blue MYCARDS. How the hell they got this document? Don't pretend you are not aware of this, as your bloody stinking BN/UMNO parties are behind the issuance of blue Mycards. With Mycards, these foreigners have been registered as voters.

wira - Nazri. The point is anyone with a MyKad can vote if he is registered. UMNO is giving easy registration to hundreds of thousands of new MyKad owners just to ensure their survival at the detriment of the country. You are mischievous not to address to that point..

Kgen - Nazri is ignorant or playing stupid. There are lot's of foreigners with MyKad walking around like instant citizens.

JBGUY - He is such a nincompoop. Nazri should know by now that there are huge numbers of foreigners being given ICs on the premise that their new found citizenship would be forfeited if they don't vote for UMNO. The Electoral Roll is also filled with dead and phantom voters. An independent audit firm should be given the task of cleaning up the electoral rolls and they should be given adequate time to do so.

Lt Cdr.B.RMK - Well said GovPayMaster! Nazri is teaching us how to suck eggs. An estimated number of more than 3 million foreigners, especially, Indons are already bumiputras of this country, of course with blue ICs. And yet he got the audacity to say foreigners can't vote. He must the first one to be 'guillotined.'
cheers.

Gazette water catchments areas

FMT LETTER: From S M Mohamed Idris, via e-mail

Friends of the Earth Malaysia (SAM) urges all state governments to take immediate measures  to gazette all  Permanent Reserved Forests that have been identified as water catchment areas in the country in line with the decision by the National Land Council.

This call is to avoid damaging activities such as deforestation and other encroachment, upstream of the water catchment areas as it would be detrimental to the forests and water supply to reservoirs.

The National Land Council had set a policy that all Permanent Reserved Forests identified as water catchments are not compromised by activities that may damage the forest ecosystem and main source of water in the country.

The National Forestry Council's 22nd meeting that took place in 2009, had discussed and agreed that state governments adopt the Water Catchment Forest Rules to coordinate the management and control of water catchment forests within the Permanent Reserved Forests.

SAM is of the view that it is time for all states to implement what was agreed upon. States must adopt the Rules and gazette all water catchment areas to confront issues related to development in the Permanent Reserved Forests as executed by Perak.

Issues relating to inconsistency in zoning the water catchments must be resolved soon. The state government should play an important role to gazette areas that have been identified as water catchments to avoid conflicting zoning by the various state departments such as the Department of Forestry, Department of Water Supply, Water Regulatory bodies and the Town and Country Planning Department.

According to the 2008 Auditor General's Report, there are many states that have yet to gazette water catchment areas that have been identified. These states are Kedah, Johor, Pahang, Sabah and Sarawak. The areas identified as water catchments are now vulnerable to encroachment and illegal logging due to the inaction of these states.

The recent encroachment at Sembrong Dam and Bekok Dam in Februari 2012 in Johor should serve as a lesson. The relevant authorities should pay serious attention to the water catchment areas.

Periodic and frequent monitoring is needed to ensure this kind of encroachment does not happen again.  Stern action must be taken against the trespassers based on provisions set. Although the policies outlined may be good but it is an utter loss if not accompanied with proactive measures.

In addition, good management practices should also be emphasized to reduce risk and increase the capacity of a water catchment in terms of quality and the area covered. This involves land use planning, preventing pollution, protecting and conserving biological diversity and ensuring ecosystem balance.

Open fire on military and lose votes

KUALA LUMPUR: The armed forces will not support the opposition if the latter attacks the purchase of military equipment.

Deputy Defence Minister Abdul Latiff Ahmad said that those politicising military matters risked hurting the feelings of Malaysia's soldiers.

Though he did not specifically label the opposition, he told the Dewan Rakyat: "When it is politicised, our soldiers feel hurt. It doesn't matter if (they're) from the navy, ground (forces) or from the air (force)."

"Each time the government makes a decision to procure new assets, they (the military) are very happy, because they are trained to be a professional army.

"So if that party… the more they condemn these assets, the more support the Barisan Nasional federal government gets," he said.

Abdul Latiff said this in response to a supplementary question by Sri Gading MP (Umno) Mohamed Aziz, who asked about certain parties playing up issues related to defence.

He had originally asked the deputy minister if the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) intended to "empower" the Royal Malaysian Navy's (RMN) fleet where maritime operations were concerned.

In recent years, Pakatan Rakyat had questioned the government's procurement of defence equipment.

These included salvos against the Scorpene submarine, RM9 billion for six Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), an estimated RM2 billion for a Mindef IT project, RM7.55 billion for armoured carriers and other matters.

Abdul Latiff also said that politicising defence matters ran the risk of revealing the country's secrets and military readiness to "uncertain enemies".

Criticising the government's critics as "less intelligent", he argued that Malaysia was a maritime country, and estimated that there was more than 600,000sq kilometres of sea area to cover (twice as much as Malaysia's land mass).

This area, he said, was filled with gas and petroleum deposits, that Malaysia had to guard.

"When we bought the LCS, we didn't do it for fun. We bought them because they have sonar (capabilities)," he said, adding that the price tag was more "competitive" than other countries.

In another query, Bachok MP (PAS) Nasharudin Mat Isa said that neither side of the political divide was willing to compromise on national security.

He then asked what Mindef's procurement process was in upgrading military equipment, and pointed to Singapore's AWACS (airborne warning and control system) upgrade.

Abdul Latiff then reassured the House that when it came to military procurement, Mindef did not operate out of the Finance Ministry's bounds.
