‘Chua-Lim debate lacked bite’

KUALA LUMPUR: Two of the nation's most prominent Chinese politicians faced-off today in what was described as a historic televised debate, and perhaps more importantly, a small but significant step towards more of such events.

The opponents, MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, were engaged in a verbal sparring over the topic "Chinese at the Crossroads. Is the two party system becoming a two race system?" at a forum about the Chinese political future this evening. The debate was organized by Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (Asli) and MCA think-thank Insap.

It was watched by a crowd of almost a thousand supporters and observers at Berjaya Times Square hotel ballroom here with many being unable to get seats in the hall, and probably thousands more watched it live on Astro's AEC and Awani channels.

The debate was the climax of a full-day forum entitled "Malaysian Chinese at the Political Crossroads", where a number of prominent MCA, SUPP, Gerakan and DAP leaders talked about issues such as Chinese education, demand for good governance, and other challenges faced by the Chinese community.

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak had officiated the event and delivered the keynote address.

The event was not however free from troublemakers and controversial characters, especially during the question time, where some members of the floor forcefully made their presence felt with not only answers but also long monologues.

MCA supporters were especially rowdy and hostile towards DAP speakers while the DAP supporters showed a more noticeable restraint. In one instance, a man asking a question from the floor got so angry with the noisy MCA supporters that he screamed back at the crowd, asking for a fight. He had to be escorted out of the hall.

Chua had, earlier in the day, fired the first salvo at Lim during his opening speech, a move that DAP leaders had condemned and described as being 'below the belt'.

Right before the debate, which was moderated by KL and Selangor assembly hall CEO Tang Ah Chai, the crowd erupted into a deafening chant by calling out the names of the debaters.

Chua on the attack

And during the debate, both leaders looked confident and were described as being "not too emotional" and "well behaved" by some observers.

Chua, who started the debate going, had talked about how DAP was always on the attack mode and practiced "politics of hatred". Chua also harped on the hudud issue, and criticised the DAP of being unable to keep PAS on a leash.

"Even simple things the DAP is unable to prevent, like in Kedah men and women sit separately.

"In Selangor PAS opposes cinemas and Kelantan has banned alcohol… we should congratulate the DAP for being so good at misleading and packaging things nicely.

"They should win the Oscar award," Chua, who received copious amounts of cheers from MCA supporters.

Chua also attacked Lim's party of being a Chinese party but disguises itself as being multi-racial, and would never face-off with Umno in a non-Chinese majority seat.

"They have also given false hopes to the Chinese that they can have a Chinese chief minister in every state but its impossible outside of Penang. If you vote DAP today, you are voting in PAS to become the boss,"said Chua who asked: "Who is PAS's biggest accomplice?" and the crowd shouted back "DAP!"

Lim backs Pakatan policies

Lim, in his opening remarks, said that it should be Najib and Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim who should be debating. "If you can't debate you shouldn't be the PM!"

Lim also showed his skills in wordplay when he retorted the PAS hudud issue by saying: "We don't make use of anybody and we don't let anyone make use of us, accept the rakyat.

"We are not against anyone, but we are against corruption!".

Lim also said that Pakatan Rakyat was a platform based on consensus and remarked that PAS has, to date, never killed anyone.

Pressing on with his arguments, Lim also pledged that if Pakatan made it to Putrajaya, he would be giving RM1,000 to the rakyat each year.

The two also took several questions from the floor but not all of them were answered, some due to the tight time contraint.

Chua also cleverly countered a question by Lim about MCA's reaction to only MCA leaders being charged over the PKFZ scandal but not any Umno leaders.

"The Penang CM seems to have asked the question in a racial manner. He is saying why a Chinese is charged, and why not a Malay? We keep quiet during a court action, unlike others who need to demonstrate for their leader's innocence"

Chua also attacked Lim for paddling populist policies and repeatedly asked Lim to tell him what are his long-term economic plans.

Lim then told Chua the Penang model of making money, by bring in private investments, open tenders, focus on innovation, and also avoid corruption.

Ignoring certain other questions from the floor, Lim then made a short speech:"Our future has been stolen for 50 over years, and I told my daughter before I came here that we want to create a future for this country."

At the end of the hour long debate, the moderator closed by saying that he hoped there would be more culture of intellectual discourse, more maturity in accepting good ideas and also tolerance in accepting differences too.

Addressing the TV audience

An observer noted that Lim seemed to have given up at one point on rebutting issues raised point-by-point but instead had chosen to capitalise on the airtime by addressing the TV audiences.

"It is campaigning rather than debating," said an audience.

Both the MCA supremo and Penang Chief Minister held a joint press conference after the debate and said that the debate was a good platform to voice their respective party's stand.

Chua said that he was "not the winner, but the people". Lim added to say that the debate was a "small step in allowing people to decide" their own leaders.

Chua also indicated that he would be open to a second debate in English or Bahasa Malaysia with Lim, though Lim joked that some might be bored of the two already.

Speaking to FMT at the end of the event, political analyst Khoo Khay Peng said that he was disappointed with the debate as it turned out to be a "war of words" rather than a proper debate.

"The occasion is good but organisation was bad, the topic was slanted. But the saddest part is that both speakers did not even try to address the issue or topic," said Khoo.

He said that MCA skipped from the fact that the party itself was part of a raced-based system and DAP had avoided committing to the PAS-hudud issue.

"The focal point of the debate was 'what you didn't do for Malaysia' and 'what I did' kind of arguments," said Khoo.

Khoo said both leaders should have taken a step back and look at the issues and debated in a more positive manner.

Chua: People the winner in the debate

KUALA LUMPUR: The people has emerged as the ultimate winner in the debate between the MCA and DAP here today as it allowed the Malaysian public to evaluate for themselves the policies and stands of the Barisan Nasional and the opposition.

"The winner is the rakyat and not Lim Guan Eng (DAP secretary-general) or Chua Soi Lek," said MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek in a joint news conference soon after concluding the debate, which drew a hugh public interest, especially from the Chinese community and was telecast live on Astro, that is on Astro AEC and Awani.

"An engagement like this will allow the rakyat to see the stands of BN and Pakatan," he said after the hour-long debate titled "Is the two-party system becoming a two-race system?" organised by the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (Asli) and MCA's think-tank, Institute of Strategic Analysis and Policy Research (Insap).

Right from the beginning, Chua and his fellow debater, the Penang chief minister, agreed to keep the debate professional and not as a platform to decide who is the winner or loser.

The debate was conducted in Mandarin and was moderated by Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall chief executive officer Tan Ah Chai.

On a question whether both parties had answered the questions raised in the debate, Chua said he believed he could have provided better explanation if they were given more time and opportunity.

Meanwhile, Lim said the debate could be a good beginning to become a more matured democratic society, adding that such an event should be more frequently organised.

"I think this is something good and I hope this will not be the first and last. I feel it will open up the mind of our rakyat because issues must be debated rationally," he said.

Lim said both he and Chua had agreed to meet again for another round of public debate, which would be in Bahasa Malaysia or English, and they would decide later on other details of the debate including topics, time and venue.

Lim added the ultimate debate that the people were awaiting to see would be between Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Clean up your act first, Waytha told

PETALING JAYA: A leader of a grassroots movement today lashed out at London-based Hindraf Makkal Sakti chairman P Waythamoorthy for criticising Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's efforts for the Indian community.

Action Team Force president and a former Hindraf supporter B Kalaivanar said Waythamoorthy should first reveal details of Hindraf's accounts and its political stand before hitting out at Najib.

"A total of 196 were detained during the protests in 2007 and we never got funds for our court cases.

"The court cases finished last year and we forked our own pocket money. Waythamoorthy has been collecting funds overseas and no one knows any details of the ammount since 2008," said Kalaivanar in response to Waythamoorthy's latest criticism against Najib.

A BN critic-turned-supporter now, Kalaivanar defended Najib's various policies that helped the Indian community, including giving out MyKads for those who were 'stateless' before, and ensuring that this group also receives financial aids.

Kalaivanar also queried how Waythamoorthy was living in the UK without holding a job, and questioned Waythamoorthy's personal commitments to safeguard the Tamil schools.

Pressure Pakatan too

He further urged Waythamoorthy to make clear Hindraf's stand in politics.

"If you are neutral, remain neutral (instead of bashing Najib in the media)," said Kalaivanar.

"If Waythamoorthy is a brave politician, he must be based here and oppose the government instead of issuing statements to the local media."

Kalaivanar also dared Waythamoorthy to push Hindraf's 18-point demands to Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang if he had the interests of the Indians.

"Why don't you (Waythamoorthy) push for Anwar to announce the 18-point demands in Pakatan Rakyat's election manifesto?" asked Kalaivanar who was a former Jerai PKR leader in Kedah.

He claimed that the Indian community did not gain anything even though they placed Pakatan Rakyat in power in several states in the last general election.

"Indians are not given privileges in the local councils. One of the 18 points was a demand to increase participation of the Indians in local councils but I haven't seen that in Selangor and Penang," Kalaivanar said.

Hindraf's accounts

Before Kalaivanar, many other critics of Hindraf had also asked the movement to account for the money it had collected from the public, resulting in the movement releasing details of its accounts in January 2010.

Waythamoorthy had said then that all the money it had collected from the public was accounted for and dismissed allegations of misappropriation.

He also had said that Hindraf had paid a total of RM111,706.60 for fines for Hindraf supporters charged in court and for their travelling allowances and accommodation.

KFC makes peace with punched customer

PETALING JAYA: KFC Malaysia has officially settled with Danny Ng Chee Fei, 26, who was punched by the one of the fast-food chain's workers earlier this month.

In an half-hour meeting at 3pm today, KFC officials apologised to Ng and his family over his hot and spicy Feb 6 ordeal.

In a Facebook statement, the company wrote: "Our management has met with Mr Danny Ng and his family, and they have accepted our apology."

"We deeply regret the occurence of this incident and would like to assure you that it was related to the quality of service provided and not due to any (other) reason whatsoever."

According to KFC Malaysia's Facebook page, its deputy president Alan Au, vice president (KFC Operations) Conrad De Lima and Corporate Communications General Manager Rosniza Baharum were also present at the meeting.

On Feb 6, Ng, his wife and sister had gone to the i-City KFC outlet in Shah Alam at 10:15pm. He had been hoping to redeem RM132 of coupons on an offer that would have expired the next day.

After 45 minutes of waiting, KFC workers there had told Ng – and dozens of other customers – that there were no fried chicken left.

Annoyed by this statement, Ng threatened to make a complaint to KFC's management. He was threatened by several KFC employees before being punched by one of them.

The episode, which was captured on video, caused a public outcry to erupt over the Internet.

As Ng was Chinese, and the offending workers Malay, some netizens assumed that the fight had started because of race. Since then, both Ng and KFC Malaysia have denied this claim.

Ng didn't want compensation

Speaking on behalf of Ng, his lawyer Eric Tan said that Ng had accepted the apology, and had refused any form of compensation.

"It may not be so meaningful to the public's eye (that he didn't get compensation), but I would like to emphasise that this public apology was meaningful to Ng," he told FMT.

Tan said that some people might accuse Ng of taking advantage of KFC Malaysia if he received something in return for the abuse.

"We don't want any chance for this incident to be interpreted as him making any personal gain…Some people might think that he did (this) for (his) personal benefit."

"That was never his intention. He just wanted justice, and for (KFC) to acknowledge (this)," he added.

As far as Tan was concerned, both he and Ng were equally convinced over KFC Malaysia's sincerity over the matter.

He added that according to KFC, the Feb 6 incident was due to a "failure in service", and that Ng had not intended to provoke the workers present.

On the workers involved, Tan said that three of them had been suspended thus far. He confirmed however, that none of them had been sacked. The police, the lawyer said, were still investigating the matter.

On its errant workers, KFC Malaysia said that "all relevant steps" were being taken to "review and improve" its training programme.

Hubungan dagang Malaysia - Isreal for real...

Pendedahan SAMM dan Chegubard mengenai hubungan dagang Malaysia-Israel juga perlu diambil kira dan diberi perhatian. Di bawah ini dipaparkan semula kenyataan SAMM bertarikh 13 Februari 2012;

Kenyataan Terbuka
Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia
13 Feb 2012

Karpal: DAP must decide on Ramasamy’s case soon

GEORGE TOWN: The DAP should decide on P Ramasamy's disciplinary case soon in view of the fast approaching general election, said national chairman Karpal Singh.

He said the party should resolve all outstanding issues including the Penang Deputy Chief Minister II Ramasamy's case, so as to have have a clear sight in its preparations to face the next polls.

"We cannot afford to have issues bugging the party when facing the election.

"All must be cleared fast within the confines of the party before the election.

"Ramasamy's case must be decided soon," Karpal, told newsmen during his routine constituency here today.

Ramasamy, who is Batu Kawan MP and Prai assemblyman, is facing charges of gross internal misconduct for allegedly organising an unprecedented noisy protest against Karpal Singh during the Penang DAP annual convention in Prai on Sunday Dec 11 last year.

But Ramasamy, the DAP deputy secretary-general and state deputy chairman, has denied the charge.

Last Thursday, 15 DAP members, including assemblymen RSN Rayer (Seri Delima) and A Tanasekharan (Bagan Dalam), testified before the DAP disciplinary committee against Ramasamy.

The hearing was conducted by three-man inquiry team headed by disciplinary committee chairman Tan Kok Wai. Others included Ipoh Barat MP and Penang state exco Lim Hock Seng.

Party leaders, political observers and media were shocked with the ugly December protest, in which Karpal, Rayer and Tanasekharan were abused and ridiculed by the pro-Ramasamy protestors.

Sivanesan denies claims

Several persons, who were said to have taken part in the December protest, were allegedly seen outside the party national headquarters in Kuala Lumpur during the disciplinary hearing.

Sources claimed that some individuals from the group had tried to intimidate the witnesses, including making obscene gestures and nasty remarks, while departing after the hearing.

Some witnesses claimed that earlier Perak's Sungkai assemblyman A Sivanesan was seen escorting several individuals from this group to meet Ramasamy outside the disciplinary hearing room.

However, when contacted, Sivanesan rubbished such claims, saying that he was at the headquarters to testify only as a witness.

"I had to rush back to my office after the hearing.

"I never took anyone with me, nor had time to talk to anyone. Its utter rubbish," Sivanesan told FMT.

Some witnesses said they would obtain video footage from the surveillance camera installed at the headquarters to prove their allegation on Sivanesan.

"Gangsterism ala MIC has crept into the party

"We have a duty to end it," said the aggrieved party members.

  • Today I attended the briefing related to the proposed SUKE (Sungai Besi Ulu Kelang Expressway) at MPAJ. MPAJ facilitated the meeting where Prolintas top management did the briefing. I was disappointed with the presentation as it failed to provide the much-desired information for any of the residents to make any informed decision. I express my displeasure over the matter. At the end of the presentation I learned nothing new other than the rehashing of business reasons why they should built the highway. My expectation is that they would have presented the impact of the highway during construction and after construction and how they plan to minimize the problems that affect the current road users.
  • The meeting was organized on the instruction of MTES. I supposed now MPAJ and the developer will write to MTES and says that they have explained there is no major complains. Most of the matter can be resolved. MTES will than approved the project as it has gone through all due process. This business of building highways must stop. We have enough roads to move goods. What is lacking is the infrastructure to move people. New highways will moved more cars and minimal number of people. It is not cost efficient. The answer lies in public transport system with last mile connection. That is what is needed. In reality the main cause of massive jam on MRR2 is caused by DUKE and AKLEG exit and entry ramp (EER). It is poorly done and is inappropriately located. The way I see it they cause the jam to justify the need to build more highway. After all that is their only business i.e. build, operate and collect toll.

‘Let’s have debate between PM designates’

GEORGE TOWN: It is time for Malaysians to adopt the US-type presidential pre-election debate to provide first-hand information and knowledge on country's future policies to electorates, says DAP.

Proposing a televised premier debate between Prime Minister-designate candidates of both Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan Nasional for the next general election, DAP national chairman Karpal Singh said it would spice up the democratic flavour of Malaysian electoral process.

"The voters will know a future premier's policies and make better judgment.. But BN will not want it," said Karpal adding that  while Pakatan premier candidate Anwar Ibrahim would be gutsy to face the challenge, BN's incumbent Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak would 'chicken out' from such debate.

Karpal also welcomed the proposal by the parliamentary select committee (PSC) on electoral reform to allow sufficient and fair access to mainstream media, especially air time in state-sponsored radio and television channels, for all contesting political parties in the next election.

He said Najib's administration should also adopt and implement all electoral reform proposals before the next election.

He also said Najib should repeal the Internal Security Act (ISA) as promised in the coming March parliamentary sitting.

He predicted that the next parliamentary sitting, which would last for a month, could be the last for this term before dissolution to pave way for the country's 13th General Election because "Najib can no longer prolong it."

Morally, he said Najib can't afford to continue governing the country with a federal government and Cabinet inherited from his predecessor Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

"Najib got to call for election fast to obtain his own mandate and earn his rights to govern the country.

"Any delay will erode his credibility," Karpal told newsmen during his routine Bukit Gelugor parliamentary constituency visit here today.

People seeking change

He predicted that Pakatan should do better than 2008 in the next election based on its increasing popularity, crowd turnouts at rallies and swelling ground sentiments seeking a change in governance.

Karpal expressed confidence that Pakatan could capture Umno-held seats in Peninsular besides making progressive inroads into difficult electoral terrains of Borneo states.

"Even if it wins more seats in Sabah and Sarawak, BN can't possibly offset its losses in Peninsular," said the Pakatan leader, hinting of an evitable change in Putrajaya.

On a cautionary note, however Karpal pointed to the 1995 election results that a reverse can also happen and wipe out Pakatan altogether.
In 1995, the DAP's Tanjung 3 project to capture Penang fell flat when Penangites wiped the party out in all, but one state seat.

Given to the dramatic change in political landscape caused by the 2008 tsunami, Karpal said all seats would be hot seats and no incumbent elected representative can be sure of retaining any seat.

"There is no longer safe seats … all will be tough battles," he said.

DAP kecewa RCI Sabah gagal dibentuk

‘BN too should reveal shadow cabinet in opposition states’

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak's challege to the opposition to reveal its shadow Cabinet seems to have inadvertently boomeranged at him.

Earlier today Najib taunted Pakatan Rakyat of being afraid to unveil its shadow minister line-up as the coalition's disunity had prevented them from dividing key portfolios among them.

He then challenged the opposition to do so in order to strengthen the idea of a two-party system in the country.

Pakatan has deflected repeated calls by civil society to set up a shadow Cabinet claiming that it would burden its resources.

The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) agreed with Najib's challenge but issued a similar one to BN to unveil its own shadow Cabinet in opposition states.

"PR's (Pakatan) failure to set up a shadow Cabinet despite its increased presence in parliament is saddening and I urge PR leaders to fix this problem," said  IDEAS' CEO, Wan Saiful Wan Jan, in a press statement.

"(But) it is even sadder to see the failure of Barisan Nasional to announce their own state shadow cabinets in the states where they are opposition."

"Despite the rhetoric of top BN leaders, there has never been a BN shadow cabinet in Kedah, Penang, Selangor, and Kelantan," he said.

Shadow cabinet – it works both ways

Saiful concurred with Najib's argument that a shadow Cabinet is important to strengthen a two-party system in Malaysia.

He also agreed that failure to announce a shadow cabinet is a failure to agree on who should hold what post which in turn indicates that the opposition may not be able to inspire public confidence.

But he added that the "truthfulness and the generic nature" of this argument makes it applicable equally to both Pakatan and BN.

"I urge all BN component parties to take heed from the wisdom of the prime minister, and announce their shadow cabinet line up now," Saiful stated.

"As we get closer to the general elections, the BN opposition at state level must not allow voters to  say that the prime minister is just a pot calling the kettle black."

Nik Sapeia kecewa PAS pecat guru halaqah

Pertandingan kolem erat perpaduan pelajar

Sabahans entitled to a clear and unequivocal answer why Najib has not announced the formation of RCI on illegal immigrants in Sabah

I am most disappointed that the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak has ended his two-day visit to Sabah without making the widely-touted announcement on the formation of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants in Sabah.

Sabahans and Malaysians have been given to understand that the Cabinet had approved the establishment of a RCI on illegal immigrants in Sabah and that Najib would be making the announcement during his Sabah visit this week.

Sabahans and Malaysians are entitled to know why Najib has failed "deliver" on this issue during his Sabah trip and whether the claim of certain Sabah Ministers that the Cabinet had made a final decision on the establishment of a RCI on illegal immigrants in Sabah is mere "hot air" without any basis grounded on facts or whether this is another example of the Cabinet being subordinate and subservient to the dictates of UMNO hegemony?

For more than three decades, I have personally been raising the issue of illegal immigrants in Sabah, creating political, economic, social and security problems for Sabahans and making them feel that they have become foreigners in their own homeland because they have been outnumbered by the unchecked influx of illegal immigrants.

Immediately after the 2008 general elections, I had sought to move a motion in the first meeting of the new Parliament to fulfil the three-decade dream of Sabahans for a RCI on illegal immigrants but this effort was thwarted by the refusal of Sabah Barisan Nasional MPs to support the RCI motion.

I had thought that at last there would be a RCI into illegal immigrants both in Sabah and throughout Malaysia but this has proved to be premature.

Sabahans are entitled to a clear and unequivocal answer from Najib whether there is going to be a RCI on illegal immigrants in Sabah and Malaysia, its full term of reference, the composition and most important of all, the time line particularly on whether there would be time for the RCI not only to submit its report and recommendations but also for their implementation before the next general elections.

TAK HABIS-HABIS UMNO/APCO MELALOK

Zainal Abidin, Abdul Rahman sedia berundur?
Lim Guan Eng

‘Not two-party but two race political system’

Is the two-party system becoming a two-race system? My hunch is 'yes'.

But before I explain my reasons, I should first like to clear the air on the premise underlying today's Chua Soi Lek-Lim Guan Eng debate.

Applying the term 'two-party system' to our political framework is a misnomer. The two-party structural model is A versus B – such as in America, Republicans vs. Democrats; in Britain, Labour vs. Conservatives/Liberals.

This duopoly implies that Party A and Party B are discrete, cohesive units, for instance, the 'GOP' (nickname for Grand Old Party) in the US or the Tories in the UK are entities characterized by a single discernible party ideology, for example, capitalists eschewing high taxes and big government.

Pakatan Rakyat can hardly be said to be 'one party' standing on a clearly defined and common ideological platform when the raison d'etre for PAS is seemingly to establish hudud, and for DAP 'Malaysian Malaysia', now morphed into 'Malaysian First'. Ask any PAS member and he will answer without hesitation that he is Muslim first.

Meanwhile, the Barisan Nasional is not one party but comprises 14 parties and recently added three affiliate members, namely Gabungan Wawasan Generasi Felda, Bekas Anggota Kemas Malaysia and Persatuan Kontraktor Melayu Malaysia.

Hence what Malaysians have in mind is rather a 'check and balance' format with the two coalitions being almost equally balanced in strength so that they can keep a sharp eye on each other and curb any excessive abuse of power.

The 'two-party system' is beneficial if Umno Malays can check PAS Malays to prevent the latter, for example, enforcing regulations prohibiting the sale of alcohol or passing laws banning concerts and entertainment, and correspondingly the PAS Malays should check the Umno Malays from taking communal 'rights'/'privileges' to an intolerable level.

If the system becomes two races lined up on opposite sides – a Chinese opposition checking the Malay establishment – then you can well ponder on the fate of our country.

Commonsensical Malay get-together

Umno and PAS held their 'secret' unity talks not once but several times. The pull factor must have been very great for them to keep trying and trying albeit the backroom-dealing ultimately not yielding result.

If their talks had been successful, a two-race system would be a done deal. And furthermore, an Umno-PAS consolidation makes a lot of sense.

An Umno-PAS coalition can rule Malaysia on the basis of Malay-majority seats alone. This would allow them to push Malay-Muslim interests without effective intervention.

Umno and PAS members speak the same language, profess the same religion, and originate from the same kampungs.

On the other hand, what do PAS and DAP members have in common? Not language. Not religion. Not culture or tradition nor shared history. And they look so different and dress even more differently.

Recently a DAP Member of Parliament facilitated a press conference for a Chinese assaulted by Malay KFC workers. The 26-year old victim required an interpreter which led Malays to wonder why someone turning for help to the 'Malaysian First' party is so lacking in confidence to speak the national language, and whether the victim is from the Republic of China.

Public sentiment over the KFC dust-up quickly divided along ethnic lines. Following on the heels of the 'fight chicken' was an online call to boycott the product in the vein of an earlier Bread War (Gardenia vs. Massimo) which was similarly racial in nature.

Another KFC-like episode in future will assuredly elicit an identical race-aligned response.

Is this racialised reality on the ground replicated in our political system? In the BN it is. Whereas DAP is tying itself in knots trying to convince voters that in Pakatan it's not.

However Penang which is led by DAP has a Chinese chief minister, Malay deputy chief minister (I) and Indian deputy chief minister (II).

The circumstances of this debate between the party secretary-general and the MCA president too shows up the DAP cognitive dissonance. The organizers have revealed that it is Lim Guan Eng who requested that the debate be carried out in Mandarin.

Lim claims his party is multiracial but he opted for a language that is alien to three-quarters of the Malaysian population (Chinese are 24.6 percent).

How fares DAP with the Malays

Previously Lim had been quick to accuse Hindraf as being "racist" when the movement chose to keep its focus on Indian issues. Nonetheless Lim is debating the president of the Malaysian Chinese Association on the future of the Chinese under the ambit of a day-long forum titled 'The Chinese at a Political Crossroads in the Next General Election' to be televised live on a Chinese satellite channel.

The Indians can see through the DAP quite clearly. Therefore it is naïve to assume that the Malays are unable to detect the deceit.

Despite the DAP's almost psychotic forays to fish Malay support, the catch has been meagre.

Thus far the party has netted two rejects – former state assemblyman Mohd Ariff Sabri Aziz, who was not nominated by Umno to re-contest his Pulau Manis seat in the last election and Aspan Alias who is unable to boast having held any significant Umno position before.

Note that the two men are never labelled 'frogs' for their crossover because DAP supporters practice double standards. (Refer to Lim Boo Chang who has sued Ng Wei Aik, Lim Guan Eng's political secretary for frog-calling).

DAP also snagged a former Utusan Malaysia journalist Hata Wahari whom the party claims to be "a Malay opinion leader".

Hata's news portal Harian Malaysia fails to even make it to a top 50,000 placing in the Alexa internet traffic ranking (Malaysia) despite being sponsored compared to "a Malay opinion leader" like Kulim Bandar Baru MP Zulkifli Nordin whose personal blog is ranked the 1,856th most popularly read website in the country.

DAP's Zairil Khir Johari and Tunku Abdul Aziz Ibrahim are also unappealing to the Malay grassroots, among whom their party has admitted it is not making inroads.

Implicit in the debate question is "if the 'two-party system is becoming a two-race system?'

The assumption is that the Chinese electorate is already in opposition hands. The outcome will be determined mainly by the Malay voters, and the rest, particularly Indians sitting on the fence.

Just two days ago the Ulama Association of Malaysia urged the government to draw up a guideline on interaction between Muslims and non-Muslims. Although the barrier is between religions, in Malaysia it is equivalent to a race wall.

DAP's forgot its 2008 plea

It has been four years since DAP and PAS hooked up yet every Valentine's Day PAS Youth will voice its protests against the celebration.

The recent Feb 14 raids on couples for khalwat were conducted in Petaling Jaya, Selangor – a Pakatan-ruled state where the two parliamentary constituencies of PJ Utara and PJ Selatan are under Chinese Pakatan MPs. What does this say?

An ethnic relations survey done by the Merdeka Center in the middle of last year polling non-Malays on the question 'Do you feel like second class citizens?' had 45 percent of the respondents answering in the affirmative.

We are two politically constructed races – 'bumiputera' and 'non-bumiputera'.

In the last general election, the Malay vote swing was actually only a small one. Lim had then pleaded with the electorate to reduce the BN's perennial two-thirds majority.

Within a short period of obtaining a larger mandate from voters, DAP changes its tune to declare it's now or never to wrest control of the federal government. Forgotten is its 2008 election campaign plea to merely weaken BN a wee bit. It now wants nothing less than Putrajaya.

Thus the Umno Malays – the party has 3.4 million members – view DAP Chinese with a distrust and suspicion that PAS Malays in parallel have never viewed MCA Chinese.

The Malays (Umno and PAS) are not caught in a time warp attacking Chua Soi Lek's sexual lapse. That the DAP Chinese, including Hannah Yeoh most recently at the DAP national confab last month, are still doing so after five long years is seen by them as vindictive and reflecting an inability to move on.

If the Chinese are rallying solidly behind DAP, what makes you think that the Malays are not banding under the Umno banner in backlash?

Just use the heated public reaction to the KFC incident as a yardstick as to which way the cookie crumbles.

A 5km jam at Anwar's ceramah in Ah Jib Gor's hometown Pekan...

pakatan pc on spr ban pondok panas 280409 dzulkefly ahmadA roadblock on the main road leading to the PAS headquarters in Pekan, Pahang, where PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim spoke yesterday, caused a traffic jam five kilometres long.

According to Kuala Selangor MP Dzulkefly Ahmad (
right), those wanting to hear Anwar speak ended up stuck in the traffic gridlock for "more than 40 minutes".

He said the roadblock was mounted just before Pekan's main bridge Jambatan Abu Bakar.

"I ended up travelling by motorcycle to the venue 3km away. Anwar also had to take a bike from 5km away."

He added that the traffic jam caused a delay to the ceramah so much so that Anwar's speech went beyond the 12am police permit limit.

"The police were there at 12am on the dot, but (Anwar) managed to extend the programme, saying that it's only fair due to the troubles we had to go through to get there," he said.

Dzulkefly said about 3,000 people attended the event, "mostly local", which he observed was "unusual for Pekan".

Anwar spent the whole of yesterday in Prime Minister Najib Razak's home state Pahang.

The parliament seat of Pekan is held by Najib, who 'inherited' it from his father, Abdul Razak Hussein, Malaysia's second prime minister, following his death in 1976.

Menurutnya lagi, kesesakan lalulintas itu menyebabkan kelewatan ceramah bermula, sehinggakan ucapan Anwar melebihi waktu had permit polis sehingga jam 12 tengah malam.

Soi Lek fires salvos at Lim Guan Eng ahead of debate...

MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek kicked off the much anticipated 'Malaysian Chinese At the Political Crossroads' conference today with an all out verbal assault against Pakatan Rakyat, ahead of his debate against DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

NONEIn his speech officiating the event, Chua contended that should Pakatan form the next federal government, the federal constitution would be in "jeopardy" because of PAS' Islamic agenda.

Chua argued that PAS' "obsession" with implementing hudud law was a threat to the prevailing legal and judicial system embodied in the Malaysian constitution.

! Malays ians have to ask themselves: what is the track-record of hudud oriented states? How have they fared in terms of governance?

"Have they reduced the level of corruption? Countries that practice hudud are mostly corrupt. Have they curbed abuse of power? Are hudud states of higher moral calibre than other states?" asked Chua.

'Hudud under Pakatan is real'

Chua said that while Pakatan has claimed that the hudud agenda was not part of its policy document - the Buku Jingga - it will not guarantee that PAS will not push for it when the coalition comes to power.

"In the 1999 general election, hudud was not mentioned in the opposition's common manifesto but within months of assuming power in Terengganu, PAS formulated hudud legislation," said Chua.
The legislation which outlines punitive action such as stoning to death for adultery is still in place today after BN took over the state in 2004.

Chua pointed out that the PAS-led Kedah state government has already announced that it will follow Kelantan's footsteps in implementing hudud law, and that PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim had "very slyly" expressed his personal commitment towards hudud.

"Though the danger of hudud becoming reality under Pakatan rule is real, there are some naive commentators who insist that the DAP will be able to check PAS' agenda," he said.

'Racially charged DAP'

In contrast, Chua said BN's approach was "diametrically" different from PAS', which had a "puritanical zeal" that curbs women rights, interaction between sexes, public access to entertainment and the freedom of cultural expression.

NONEChua's hudud bashing spree took place while keynote speaker and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak listened on.

Meanwhile, Chua also claimed that DAP was becoming so "racially charged" to the point of being "arrogant".

"DAP in its campaign, especially with the Chinese crowd, likes to allude to their success in forming the Penang government and a DAP leader as the chief minister.

"This has given false hope to the Chinese that this is possible in other states. By tradition, this is only possible in Penang but not others.

"Hence, DAP has been planting hope in the minds of an approximately 6.5 million Malaysian Chinese that a Chinese-led government is possible and that Malaysian Chinese have been short-changed by MCA," he said.

Against the odds

A case in point, said Chua, was the case of the short-lived Pakatan government in Perak, where DAP won the most seats, but the menteri besar's position was ceded to PAS, which had the least number of seats.

hee yit fong perak state assembly chaos 070509 01Moreover, he pointed out that DAP was now receptive of a PAS nominee for the position of Johor menteri besar.

"In short, a vote for DAP is a vote for PAS and PKR, as they are partners in Pakatan. To empower DAP is to strengthen PAS and paving the way for PAS to be the 'taiko (big brother)' in the state and federal government," he said.

The highly watched conference today will see four topics being discussed, and will feature one DAP leader in each session facing up to five top Chinese BN leaders.

Some sessions will be moderated by MCA leaders such as Fong Chan Onn, Ng Yen Yen and Kong Cho Ha.

The event will culminate in ! a debate between Chua and Lim, that will be televised live.

The event is jointly organised by Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute(Asli) and MCA's think tank Institute of Strategic Analysis and Policy Research (Insap)

Pointless if extremists still sponsored, says Guan Eng...

Lim Guan Eng said today it is meaningless trying to combat radicalism when "sustenance and even sponsorship is offered to bigoted and extremist organisation."

"There is no point forming a coalition of moderates while, at the same time, sustenance and even sponsorship is offered to bigoted and extremist organisations," the DAP secretary general said at the True Moderation conference in Penang.

The DAP has repeatedly criticised Datuk Seri Najib Razak's move to fight extremism by forming the Global Movement of Moderates, saying the prime minister's Umno was itself a danger to moderation.

The Umno president had said embracing moderation and rejecting all forms of extremism is the only way for the world to move forward and for all countries to co-exist in peace at the launch of the movement on January 17.

But DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang responded by saying Najib must first transform Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia, which has previously accused DAP of trying to turn Malaysia into a Christian state, to prove he qualifies as a voice of global moderation.

DAP publicity chief Tony Pua also said the following week that "the game that Umno and Perkasa are playing... is a highly dangerous one which m! ay forev er tarnish Malaysia's reputation as a moderate country."

Guan Eng also said today "we must be wary of those who use the holy books for their own private and selfish ends — those who speak with forked tongues and quote the Scriptures in vain" in his speech at the event held in conjunction with the United Nations' World Inter-Faith Harmony Week.

The Penang chief minister added that "true moderation can only come from knowledge and understanding" as those who are "ignorant and fearful about the place of his religion and of his relationship with persons of other faiths is bound to be defensive and extreme in his dealings with other faiths."

Muslims and Christians have repeatedly disagreed over the use of the word "Allah" to denote God in Malay-language bibles as well as alleged proselytising of Muslims in the past two years.

Several houses of worship were fire-bombed in early 2010 following a court ruling allowing the Catholic Church to publish the word "Allah".

Muslim NGOs formed Himpunan Sejuta Umat (Gathering of a Million Faithful) this year in response to "the threat of Christianisation."

Malaysia's 28 million population is over 60 per cent Muslim, but more than half its citizens in Sarawak and Sabah, long considered the ruling Barisan Nasional's vote bank, are predominantly Christian.

cheers.

Orang Islam umat vampire?

Oleh Farhana Abdul Halim

"Darah! Kami mahukan darahnya.

Wartawan Arab menghina Nabi?

Jadi adakah masyarakat Islam masih mahukan darah Hamza?

Masih ingat waktu sekolah dulu,
Berbincang tentang penerusan perjuangan kita itu,
Anda berkata anda No.1,
Tidak boleh pergi sahaja begitu,
Itulah kawan ku, Daniel Ng,
Victorian ku…

Anda pergi tanpa berkata temu,
Rehatlah kawan ku…
