How myths can be necessary and also dangerous

— Farish A. Noor
The Malaysian Insider
Feb 12, 2012

FEB 12 — Over the last two days I have been interviewed three times by three different media publications over the question of where I stand on the latest silly debate in Malaysia, namely the question of whether Hang Tuah existed or not, and whether it ought to be taught in schools.

This is, I have to confess, one of the smaller histories of Malaysia that has been in the footnotes of my mind for ages, and I recall how I was once asked by an elderly gentleman during a forum discussion in Kuala Lumpur in 1998 if it was true that Hang Tuah was of Chinese origin.

Let me state what little I know of the matter, and make my stand relatively clearer:

Firstly, I don't know or care if Hang Tuah was Chinese, Malay, Japanese, Eskimo or Serbo-Croat. He could have been a mix of all of the above with a Martian wife and a Venusian mother-in-law, for all I care.

Secondly, no, there is no record of the keris Taming Sari either, and every antique shop that claims to have one is lying to get your money.

Thirdly, please note that in the Hikayat Hang Tuah, we also have stories of kerises that fly, magical potions, demons and monsters, and a magical bean that when swallowed allows you to speak all languages. (A bit like the Babel fish in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy methinks.)

Look, for the umpteenth time, may I state that in my opinion the Hikayat Hang Tuah is a work of fiction. Looking for facts in fiction is like trying to find the exact location where the battle of the Mahabharatta was fought, or the exact spot where King Arthur removed the sword Excalibur from the stone. It's a story, for heaven's sake!

Though I have not read the exact comments made by Professor Khoo Kay Kim that sparked off this debate, I was made to understand that all Prof Khoo said was that Hang Tuah did not exist in the form of an actual, living, historical human being. On that count he happens to be right, as there are also no written records to show that Marco Polo ever went to China — and some historians have even claimed that his account of China was entirely fabricated, and put together from other accounts of other travellers who did make the journey to the land of the Celestials themselves.

Hang Tuah was, and remains, a myth. And Myths are only that — grand narratives that make it into the national consciousness and become part of a nation's symbolic and discursive repertoire. Some works of fiction may indeed have historical details in them, and Tolstoy's War and Peace stands out as a prominent example. Nobody doubts that Napoleon existed, that Napoleon invaded Russia, that the battle of Borodino was fought in 1812. But just because these places and dates are true does not mean that Pierre Besuhov or Prince Andrei Bolkonsky existed too. Tolstoy simply weaved a monumental tale that was spun through a combination of fiction and facts, and the product was a classic of European literature.

And this is where my gripe lies: That for decades too many extreme right-wing nationalist buffoons in Malaysia have sought to instrumentalise the myth of Hang Tuah as a vehicle for all sorts of nefarious and dubious ideological ends: as a testament to ethnic majoritarianism, as a primordial claim to land and belonging, as a means to proclaim ethnic dominance etc.

And yet — until today — an overwhelming number of semi-literate Malaysians pontificate at length about a text they have never read in full. People claim Hang Tuah as a member of their "race", despite the fact that in the second part of the Hikayat Hang Tuah the character renounces all worldly belonging to kingdom and kind.

Right-wing nationalists claim him as an ethnic hero, despite the fact that by the end of the story Hang Tuah gives up his keris, abandons his kingdom, turns his back on power and becomes a wandering everyman mystic-emissary of peace. He finds/found salvation through a denial of the world and its attendant riches and power, and becomes a nobler man because he denies racism, nationalism and forms of parochial sectarian power-politics. That is why he is a hero, for heaven's sake. And despite all that — which can be found in the Hikayat if only people took the time to read it — Malaysians still ask if Hang Tuah was Malay or Chinese???

I agree with Prof Khoo that history has to begin by teaching students to differentiate between fact and fiction, data and myths.

The Hikayat Hang Tuah falls in the latter category — but as a myth it is, and should be seen as, truly inspiring, uplifting and noble for the manner in which it valorises our common humanity above all else. Hang Tuah, in the end, does not care about race: So why should we??

In the final analysis, the Hikayat Hang Tuah ought to be taught in our schools — but only if it is taught in full, and equal emphasis is given to the development of the character who eventually becomes a universal figure, standing above narrow ethnic and political loyalties, and who sees the human race as his family and the world as his home. What a great message that would be for a new generation of global and globalising Malaysians!

But for that to happen Malaysia still has to evolve a little further, and we need to render ourselves immune to the crass and vulgar attempts to turn our national heroes, myths and legends into parochial tales to frighten the masses and to compel blind loyalty from people who can't even read beyond page one. — aliran.com

Is Greece facing disorderly default?

By Barry Neild and Irene Chapple, CNN
Feb 10, 2012

Greece is in negotiations over its latest bailout deal, but needs to meet harsh new terms
The country is implementing austerity measures but faces protests and deteriorating finances
The default of a eurozone member is politically and economically charged

London (CNN) — Will Greece default?

Greece is negotiating to repay some creditors less than what it owes in order to avoid a disorderly default. If Greece is unable to repay its bills at all on the day they fall due, this would trigger a sudden default which would send shockwaves through the market. Greece faces its next large bond redemption, of €14.5 billion, in March, and is in negotiations over its latest bailout deal as the deadline to this payment approaches.

However, it needs to meet harsh new terms laid out by Europe's leaders. Jean-Claude Juncker, the prime minister of Luxembourg and head of the Eurogroup, has said three elements must be nailed down in order for the country to access the funds.

The sweeping reform package agreed to by Greece and the so-called troika, made up of the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund, must be approved by parliament this weekend.

Secondly, Greece's political leaders must pledge that they will continue to implement the measures after elections in April. Finally, Greece must also find a further €325 million in "structural expenditure" cuts for 2012.

Greece has been implementing harsh austerity measures to try to balance its books, but has faced protests on the streets, and finances that are worse than expected. Its economy is deteriorating, and it cannot raise money with investors due to the high premiums they demand — leaving it dependent on the bailout funds.

Why is Greece still being supported?

The default of a eurozone member is politically and economically charged. The common currency lies at the heart of the "European dream" and a default by one its members would be devastating.

So Greece is being financially supported by its eurozone peers as Europe's leaders, led by Germany's chancellor Angela Merkel and France's president Nicolas Sarkozy, desperately attempt to figure out how to fix the problems. But the situation is getting worse as the eurozone economy heads toward recession.

The potential for the crisis to spread to Italy and Spain — the so-called "contagion" effect — is a powerful incentive to contain the problem. Bailouts of Greece, Ireland and Portugal have created backlashes in countries such as Germany; the prospect of holding up the bloc's far larger economies is economically and politically unpalatable.

So what are Europe's leaders doing?

Most European leaders have agreed on a fiscal pact which strengthens a financial firewall and is designed to prevent governments running excessive deficits. The €500 billion permanent bailout fund — called the European Stability Mechanism — is being introduced mid year, rather than next year as originally planned.

But Europe's leaders have come up with grand plans before and been knocked back by the markets. Unless this plan addresses all the concerns with some force, the crisis is likely to escalate.

How serious is default?

It depends if it is disorderly, or controlled. It is now clear some creditors will not be paid back in full, and markets will likely be relieved once a deal on this is done. However, there have been numerous grim predictions should Greece be suddenly unable to pay its bills. Most doomsday scenarios see global panic and market sell-offs. A default might mean French and German banks exposed to the debt will begin to struggle, resulting in a credit lockdown by the wider banking sector.

If banks are forced to take this hit, it could have global economic consequences similar to those seen in the financial crisis that followed the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008.

Investors would also begin looking at which other countries are facing financial difficulties, including Italy and Spain. If investors stop supporting these countries, the eurozone's stronger countries could again be leaned on for financial assistance.

But that's where the help from Europe, and further afield, could run out of capacity. Italy's economy, for example, makes up 17% of the eurozone — nearly seven times bigger than that of Greece. These countries are regarded as "too big to fail," because bailouts would be too expensive.

How did we get here?

Greece's economy has struggled since the country joined the euro in 2001. In 2004, it admitted its budget deficit was higher than allowed under rules of entry.

By 2008 the government had narrowly passed a belt-tightening budget, designed to trim its massive national debt burden, triggering massive protests. In 2009, Greece admitted its deficit would be more than 12% of gross domestic product — far higher than previous estimates and more than four times the requirements of entry into the eurozone.

The country was hit with ratings downgrades, pushing its sovereign bonds into so-called "junk" territory. At the same time, resistance to the austerity measures and a contracting economy have made it extremely difficult for Greece to clamber its way out of the financial problems.

Is it time for Greece to drop out of the euro?

Greece is running out of options as pressure grows on its finances. Unless it can make good on massive debts it faces financial collapse, with heavy consequences not only for the eurozone countries but for the global economy.

The ECB, IMF and eurozone countries have poured money into Greece to prevent this outcome and may have to continue doing so unless another solution can be found.

This has led some to call for Greece to be allowed to quit or be thrown out of the euro, to ease the burden. Some Greeks also support this since they believe it would spare them from harsh austerity measures demanded as conditions for assistance.

Economists are divided. Many say it is impossible for Greece to drop out because the consequences would be so disastrous that eurozone economies will not allow this to happen.

However, the likelihood is increasing as Greece continues to struggle with its financial obligations.

How would quitting the euro affect the Greeks?

This would liberate Greece from the eurozone's fixed exchange rate, allowing it to become a more competitive exporter and an even more attractive tourist destination.

But it would come with a heavy price. It would still leave Greece in debt and reliant on handouts that former eurozone partners would be less willing to supply. It would also mean Greeks would face higher prices for imported goods.

It is also likely to drive people out of the country, as they face lower wages and higher taxes, leaving the country unable to recover for years.

Greece set to agree to bailout as Germany demands action

By Harry Papachristou and Matt Robinson
Reuters
Sun Feb 12, 2012

ATHENS (Reuters) – Greek lawmakers looked set to agree to a deeply unpopular bailout deal on Sunday to avert what Prime Minister Lucas Papademos warned would be "economic chaos," and Germany demanded Athens dramatically change its ways to stay in the euro.

The austerity bill sets out 3.3 billion euros ($ 4.35 billion) in wage, pension and job cuts as the price of a 130-billion-euro rescue package from the European Union and International Monetary Fund – Greece's second since 2010.

Greece needs the funds before March 20 to meet debt repayments of 14.5 billion euros and the bill has stirred anger on the streets and turmoil within the coalition government.

Addressing the nation late on Saturday, Papademos warned that failure to back the bill would mean a disorderly default and "set the country on a disastrous adventure."

"It would create conditions of uncontrolled economic chaos and social explosion," he said.

"The country would be drawn into a vortex of recession, instability, unemployment and protracted misery and this would sooner or later lead the country out of the euro."

Greece's Communist Party accused him of "lying and scaremongering."

But euro zone paymaster Germany ratcheted up the pressure, saying Europe needed action, not words.

"The promises from Greece aren't enough for us any more," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said in an interview published on Sunday in Welt am Sonntag newspaper.

German opinion polls show a majority of Germans are willing to help, Schaeuble said, "but it's important to say that it cannot be a bottomless pit.

"That's why the Greeks have to finally close that pit. And then we can put something in there. At least people are now starting to realize it won't work with a bottomless pit."

"Greece needs to do its own homework to become competitive – whether that happens in conjunction with a new rescue program or by another route that we actually don't want to take…"

When asked if that other "route" meant Greece would have to leave the euro zone, Schaeuble said: "That is all in the hands of the Greeks themselves. But even in the event (Greece leaves the euro zone), which almost no one assumes will happen, they will still remain part of Europe."

DIRE WARNINGS, STORMY DEBATE

He said that the rescue efforts for Greece were proving more difficult than efforts to unify Germany in 1990.

"The reason is the realization that there is a need for change, and change dramatically, still needs to develop further with a lot of people in Greece."

The 300-seat parliament is due to begin debating the bill at 2 p.m. (1200 GMT) before a vote expected late in the evening.

Demonstrators have pledged to turn out in force at 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) on the main square in front of the assembly, although rainy weather may limit the numbers of protesters.

The austerity measures include 300 million euros in pension cuts and a 22 percent reduction in the minimum wage from about 750 euros a month.

The bill aims to cut Greece's bloated state sector workforce by about 150,000 people by 2015.

It also provides for a bond swap to ease Greece's debt burden by cutting the real value of private investors' bond holdings by some 70 percent.

On a day of dire warnings and stormy debate on Saturday, leaders of the ruling coalition told uneasy lawmakers to support the bill or be dropped from party lists for an election that could come by April.

At least 20 deputies from the two main parties in the Papademos coalition threatened on Saturday to vote 'No' – but the bulk of the coalition's 236 MPs are still all but certain to approve the package. Six members of his cabinet have resigned.

Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said the deal had to be approved by Sunday or the country would miss a February 17 deadline to offer the debt "haircut" to its private-sector bondholders.

Euro zone finance ministers also expect Greece to explain by then how 325 million euros from this year's total budget cuts, as yet unspecified, will be achieved before it agrees to the bailout.

Bailout documents released on Friday left blank the amount of the full rescue package, and Venizelos said Greece might need 15 billion euros more to save the country's banks, confirming estimates from EU officials.

The EU and IMF say they will not release the aid without clear commitments by the main party leaders that reforms will be implemented, whoever wins the next election.

A sad day to be Malaysians and Muslims — Islamic Renaissance Front

FEB 12 — The Islamic Renaissance Front strongly condemns the deportation of Hamza Kashgari over his allegedly offensive tweets.

Due to the irresponsible and cowardly actions of the Malaysian government in enabling the deportation, Mr Kashragi now faces the possibility of the death penalty in his home country of Saudi Arabia for the simple act of demanding his right to practice the most basic human rights – freedom of expression and thought.

Since the Syri'ah Law that is practised in Saudi – just like any other Muslim countries that implement Syari'ah – is subject to individual interpretation by the clerics, and Saudi is known to have a very poor record in ensuring fair trials compounded by a history of denial of rights to lawyers and clients; we do not feel that Hamza Kashgari will stand a fair trial.

More importantly, Mr Kashgari has already removed the tweets and apologized for his statements. We believe no further punishment is necessary upon the trauma he had already endured being on the run for such an innocuous act what more while facing the risk of punishment by death.

In this, we wish to remind Muslims of the importance of forgiveness in Islam. The importance accorded to forgiveness in Islam is very much tied to another key value of the deen which is the freedom of speech and conscience. This can be seen clearly in verse 256 of Al-Baqarah which states that "There shall be no coercion in matters of faith. Distinct has now become the right way from [the way of] error…"

Humans were created as subjects of freedom, divinely endowed with the rational faculties needed to be able to determine what is right and wrong on their own accord without the threat or imposition of external forces. The development of character depends on our ability to make that journey towards the good on terms we can relate to and understand most.

This is the core of any ethical system whereby meaningful choices and virtuous acts find their meaning on the basis that they have been willed freely by the person. For if coercion is what is needed most to ensure good conduct, then notions of love, solidarity, genuine trust or sincerity lose their meaning.

In appealing for the humane treatment of Mr Kashgari, the Islamic Renaissance Front once again points to the values of freedom, justice and democracy in Islam.

We are also deeply disappointed with the complicity of the Malaysian government for succumbing to pressures to deport Mr Kashragi. As a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Malaysia could have used this opportunity to set an example to the region, if not the entire Muslim world, of what responsible governance based on human rights could be.

Instead, with barely a pause in its conscience, the Malaysian government saw no problems deporting someone accused guilty for the supposed crime of tweeting his opinions.

The Islamic Renaissance Front adjures that the Malaysian government should just step down from the Human Rights Council so that the world would no longer be led to believe that Malaysia somehow stands for something it actually does not. The reality is that beneath the proliferation of malls and skyscrapers, we are still of an administration that does not understand basic human compassion.

This will save everyone's time.

The deportation of Hamza Kashgari despite a High Court order preventing it is clearly a show of disrespect and a contempt of court. The Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein must be held resposible for this wicked and egregious act. Considering that Malaysia has no extradition treaty with Saudi Arabia, the deportation is a clear insolent and uncivil act and in breach of international laws.

There is nothing to be proud of being a part of the so-called Global Movement of Moderates. It is just another superficial and manipulative evocations of democracy and rights. Today is indeed a very sad day to be Malaysians and Muslims.

Dr Ahmad Farouk Musa, Ahmad Fuad Rahmat, Edry Faizal Eddy Yusuf and Muhammad Nazreen Jaafar from the Islamic Renaissance Front sent the above article.

SUK(A)E & DUK(A)E? Tak tau nak kata!

  • Like thousands of residents in BA and surrounding neighborhood depends entirely of MRR2 to take me to office and home on daily basis.  The MRR2 is so bad that once I am in, I chose not to go out unless it is absolutely necessary. I prefer to hide in the comfort of my home surrounded by the green lungs within BA. The business of building highway in this country will continue as long as there are no clear programs to improve public transport in this country with the last mile connection. The current bane of residents of BA is largely due to the poor exit and entry ramp into DUKE and AKLEH. DUKE has become the cause of "duka" of the many people in BA and surrounding neighborhood.

  • Prolintas is proposing to build another highway that is called SUKE (Sg. Besi Ulu Kelang Expressway). I don't know whether I should be "suka" about this highway. As such today I spend 2 hours at the MPAJ/Prolintas exhibition on the SUKE to understand more about the Prolintas proposal.

  • It is hard to given any comment with the limited information being displayed. What was shown were the aerial map of the Klang Valley and some dashed line that indicates the proposed alignment would be. Not a very useful map for anyone to make any inform decision.  I gave my feedback that there is a need to have a more detail drawing and the need to have a special briefing for the residents of BA and the surrounding residents. Without such detail drawing, it is pointless for anyone to make any comment.

  • These residents would be directly affected when the construction starts in 2013 that will last for 4 years. What I don't understand is that why didn't the local authority display interactive information on the net. It would make it easier for people to make the necessary decision. MRTKV did it and it was very useful. I could analyze and make a clear decision at the comfort of my home. I would like to urge the residents of BA to visit MPAJ office or attend a special briefing on the matter at MPAJ on Saturday 18 Feb 2012@1000am. Please note the highway starts somewhere near the exit of Jalan Wangsa 1 into MRR2. I suspect if the ramp is built there and without any special ramp for residents of BA, we would be in trouble. As if we don't have enough problems in BA. I would like to urge the authority to get Prolintas to realign their exit and entry into AKLEH immediately before looking at another highway. I cannot "tahan" already.

Parliament to be dissolved in June, polls in July?

On 26th January, I wrote of a late night meeting with people in UMNO who had late last year alerted me to a dissolution date this month and polling date next month.

Then, they had said they were not appraised of any change of plans.

Met them again for supper on 7th February.

Change of plans, they said.

Dissolution in June, and polls in July.

"Any firm dates?", I asked.

"As of now, no", was the reply.

I'm checking with other sources now.

You folks hearing anything?

Country Breaking Down

Yes I think so. There is going to be a "sum of the parts" situation in this country sometime. The breakdown is happening slowly all around us, a little bit here, a little bit there. One day however, all these little breakdowns are going to add up - the sum of the parts - and then the whole country is going to blow up. Quite unfortunately, this breakdown is going to affect some people more than others (like the poor, or some races).

1. The recent news about the nurses is a clear example. The nurses from the private nursing colleges are unemployable. So the government says they may absorb them. This will certainly affect service quality at Government hospitals. (Which has its own set of problems already). This is a breakdown in the system.

The better option is to tighten up nurses training at all nurses training centres - private as well as public. But this wont happen. Why? Because in Malaysia things are not that simple and straightforward. It is always more complicated. There are always vested interests, people with connections w! ho want to make money at the expense of you and me. That is why the system is breaking down.

2. In Japan, a Minister with even one "inexplicable" cow in her house will not just resign but she may commit suicide, ritual harakiri, because of the shame and embarrasment. Over here it is different - it is 'complicated'. The Minister proudly says that "untuk tenangkan jiwa" she and her spouse travelled separately to the Holy Land not once, twice or three times but five trips in total.

Wow! Orang lain nak pergi sekali pun kena kira banyak kali.

Surely that would have involved at least five First Class tickets (I dont think the Minister travelled Economy). Plus assistants, PAs, hangers on etc, what was the Bill? Say another RM100,000 for "soul searching" trips to the Holy Land? This is another breakdown in the system.

3. This morning I joined some really senior veteran journalists for their weekly Sunday breakfast at an unearthly 7:30 am.

The conversation also turned to the deteriorating roads and the worsening trash situation in Kuala Lumpur. It is getting from bad to worse. There are potholes everywhere. It is as if the Government does not care anymore.

Someone (if I mention who, you will all be terkejut - he is not in the picture) said that the Federal Government does have a Budget for road maintenance inside Kuala Lumpur. Strangely for the past few years this Federal funding has just stopped. The money has been diverted elsewhere - still spent inside Kuala Lumpur but for river cleaning and such. So the roads are becoming like Four Wheel Drive tracks at some parts of Kuala Lumpur. These deteriorating road conditions are a visible manifestation of a breakdown in the system.

4. Then here is some more news about the declining education system :
  • address declining interest in Science and Maths, says Muhyiddin
  • 'The decline in interest among students for Science and Mathematics in schools is being addressed..' said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
  • .. there was a 37% drop in students taking up Science and Mathematics, and a 29% decline for pure science subjects.
This will have serious repercussions in the poverty levels in our country in another 10 years or 20 years. Students who do not study Science and Mathematics will (or should) fall behind others who do study Science and Mathematics. They will have less job opportunities and will become a bigger burden on their families and on the country. Our country too will attract less investments from overseas if our work force does not like Science and Mathematics. We will become poor.

I am positive there is a racial element to this as well. What are the races that are shying away from Maths and Science? Surely they will fall behind those races that embrace Science. Then we will scratch our heads and ask 'Pasal apa jurang perbezaan antara kaum masih wujud lagi - tanpa habis?' One of the biggest reasons is because we have switch! ed away from the PPSMI. This will cost our country tremendously. Abandoning the PPSMI will make us poor. This is another breakdown in the system.

5.  Here is another example of yet another breakdown in the system.

Virus outbreak in state under control, says Liow

The rotavirus, which also causes vomiting, fever and dehydration, had caused two infant deaths and some 2,200 acute gastroenteritis (AGE) cases in the Batang Padang and Hilir Perak districts.

..a high density of cases reported in areas close to the water plant that supplies both districts. . "Initial investigations show that the water was polluted by the virus.

Two infants, aged two and 10 months old, died on Jan 31 from severe dehydration.

AGE cases in the Batang Padang and Hilir Perak districts have risen to 2,544

In a related matter, the Perak Water Board has increased the amount of chlorine at its water treatment plant in Bukit Temoh, Tapah..

This is another breakdown in the system. The water treatment plant is producing dirty water which has now caused the deaths of two infants and made another 2,544 children very sick. Only now the Perak Water Board has increased the amount of chlorine in its water treatment plants.

Why only now? The first water treatment plants were set up by the Orang Putih more than one hundred years ago. In any water treatment, they always use alums and (maybe) put chlori! ne in th e water to remove organic material, kill bacteria and other germs. So what happened? The technicians at the water treatment plants suddenly did not like Mathematics and Science? Or they cannot read the instruction manuals (which are most likely still in English). Or it is simply the "saya peduli apa" attitude.

6. The fracas at the Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet is also another manifestation of the system breaking down. The restaurant had run out of chicken. The customers got testy after the KFC guy had said "lu mahu apa lagi' (or words to that effect). Words were exchanged and the KFC guy let fly. It is the same 'saya peduli apa' attitude again. The country is breaking down.

We need strong leadership folks. We need to scrutinise the details and pay attention to doing the right things in this country. There is no time to foya foya, fly off to the Holy Land, lose billions to the Arabs or get fleeced by just about everyone. A revolution is nigh. Just exactly when or how it is going to happen is the big mystery. Complicating the matter are the liwatters, the bearded monkeys and the racists who are chomping at the leash - waiting to let loose their own destruction upon the land. May Allah save this country.
Outsyed the box
******************************************************************************
This is almost similar to what I had in mind to write so I will add on.
This country is running on auto.  We do not have a leader but just a rich bastard who had been gold fed since the day he opened his eyes to smell this earth.
People like that are good for nothing, they live in a different set of life style and have different thinking.
They use people like toilet papers. When they need you, they are nice but once you are no longer needed, you are discarded.
This country need to change, in order to get this change, we need to be ruin like a shattered glass that cannot be glue back.  Then a replacement glass is brought in.
Today the Government had registered not 1.3million 6P illegal migrates but 11 million.  Yes the shocking truth is that out of 28 million population 11 million are Indonesians, Filipinos, Bangladashi etc. So this coming election (if there is one) is definitely explosive because it is the 6P migrates vs the Malaysians.
Today the Government is not a government but a set of gold diggers. The more they dig, bigger the holes.

Learn from BBC and apologise, Ah Jib Gor urged

NONEDAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng hascalled for the prime minister to follow BBC's example and apologise tothe public for "embarrassing our country".

"NajibTun Razak (left) should direct his Prime Minister's Office (PMO) toapologise for paying RM84 million to to burnish the Najibadministration's image on global broadcast networks, just as the BBC isapologising..." said Lim.

He was responding in a statement today to BBC World News' worldwidebroadcast apologizing for having aired programmes whose editorialcontent had been compromised.

The UK broadcaster in their statement yesterday singled out Malaysiaas one of the countries affected, where eight programmes aired werefound to have been paid for by the Malaysian government.

UK daily The Independent reportedyesterday that FBC Media had received £17 million (RM83 million) for'global strategic communications' resulting in the said programmes.

Najib himself had in a written parliamentary reply to Batu MP Tian Chua last year confirmed the expenditure.

Lim called the episode a disgrace and an embarrassment to the nation.

"The Prime Minister's Office must therefore take full responsibilityfor this utterly disgraceful episode and follow in the footsteps of theBBC by apologising for embarrassing our country," he said.

BBC apologises for airing paid PR pieces

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has apologised for airing sponsored current affairs programmes which includes eight that featured Malaysia.

In a statement posted on the BBC website yesterday, thebroadcaster said the "small number" of programmes that were aired onBBC World News between Feb 2009 and July 2011, broke the internal rulesaimed at protecting its editorial integrity.

"These rules ensure that programmes are free, and are seen to be free, from commercial or other outside pressures," read the statement.

Although the nature of programmes unrelated to Malaysia were mentioned without much details, the BBC made it clear that eight programmes "appeared" to have a financial relationship with the Malaysian government.

"This meant there was a potential conflict of interest, though the BBCwas not aware of it when the programmes were broadcast," read thestatement.

The statement made no direct mention of London-based PR firm FBC Media Ltd which produced the eight documentary programmes.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had admittedto Parliament that it had paid 19.6 million euros (RM80 million) to FBCMedia between 2007 and 2010 to spruce up Malaysia's image.
Among others, the documentaries painted a rosy picture of Malaysia's oil palm industry and treatment of indigenous peoples.

Yesterday, British daily The Independent, the newspaperthat broke the scandal, reported that the BBC would be apologising to! an estim ated 74 million people globally over the matter.

The report said viewers from "Kuala Lumpur to Khartoum" will be able towatch the broadcast which is available to 295 million homes, 1.7million hotel rooms, 81 cruise ships, 46 airlines and 35 mobile phoneplatforms, at four different time zones.

According to the BBC statement, the BBC Trust'seditorial standards committee had identified various breaches ineditorial guidelines due to the errant programmes.

"It agreed that given the serious nature of the breaches an on-air apology to the audience was appropriate," read the statement.

BBC mohon maaf siarkan dokumentari tajaan M'sia

Hanuman: Suara Hati – Bahagian 4

"Mengucap, tuanku! Itu hanyalah mainan fikiran. Mimpi hanyalah mainan tidur. Jangan biarkan mimpi-mimpi buruk seperti itu mengganggu ketenangan jiwa tuanku."

Maramanden datang berdiri di sisiku. Dia terus memegang bahuku. Aku membenarkan.

Aku pergi bersendirian sahaja.

Entah mengapa fikiranku tiba-tiba sahaja melayang jauh. Lalu aku pun terkenang kembali segala kejadian masa silam. – Bersambung minggu depan

An angelic Voice -- Whitney Houston -- has left us...

but her heavenly company will still abide by human kind who art kind and gentle, and believe in ever-lasting living.

And mGf from Down Under shares a similar sentiment with desis's, viz;

http://youtu.be/oyQdCJwJZck

"I'm sure God will let Whitney in with A beautiful voice like hers .. " ~~ sweetsspirits:)
I came back from a long" brunch starting at 9.30AM and ushered away by the stall owner at 2.00PM -- beneath an 100-year-old angsana tree -- ich we awe wished was a durian tree! -- the brunch consisted of RM1.30 nazi lemak, washed down wit' RM1 tehtarik; then we rested and I enterained 'em with short stories including whether we'd like to go elsewhere with Dolly Parton than ushered into that glory place with the Queen, but I won't repeat it hear because my innocent ER don't play Poke and so don't know what is royal flush and the greatest Pears on earth on a femail bod.

Then my wiser audience comprising God-fearing Furongites revealed in a show of hands they'd rather go where Dolly (no, not the first genetically engineered sheep, you goat!), Marilyn M, Ziana Z and Madonna would likely go or had gone. Please this ws only a "straw poll" amongst simpletons staying in Malaysia's peytonplacesque Seremban. We are a long, long way from Tipperary or Where Einstein and Newton lived OK! Then we had lunch with Desi sharing a Rawa tosai with a matey knot lawar at all but baik-baik at heART.

I returned home falf-dazed on two kopi-oh and bizarre tails from the Furong General to be right or left on time to watch Breaking News on CCN that Whitney Houston had been found dead at a hotel at the young tender age of 48. I have always enjoyed vocalists with a wide range and heart-stopping climaxes, though I still preferred Faith Hill anytime.

I compleatly agree with SweetSpirits that Whitney's voice was in the realm of heavenly beauty, and hearing just two testimonies -- from Sim! on Cowel l and Lionel Ritchie -- one would know tomorrow's newspapers would have frontpage songs of praise mournig an angelic voice's premature departure.

I will wish Whitney complete serenity and rest at the place she has gone to before us most sinning mortals. God bless her with all her human frailties and all the awesome vocal assets she had been entertaining we humans worldwide. It's a universal loss. God bless the world with more folks like Whitney. Rest in peAce ~~ Amen.

Stop The Presses!

Pop Vocal Legend Whitney Houston Found Dead

By Billy Johnson, Jr. | Stop The Presses!3 hours ago

Follow me on Facebook, Twitter.

Whitney Houston WireImage/Tibrina HobsonToo many of us—myself included—are guilty of making insensitive jokes about the demise of Whitney Houston, her frail frame, loss of one of pop's purest voices, and battle with drugs.

But none of us are laughing now.

On Saturday, Houston's publicist confirmed ! to the A ssociated Press that the award-winning "I Will Always Love You" singer died. She was 48. The timing of her death, the eve of the Grammys, the biggest music event of the year, makes the horrible news even more tragic. According to CNN, Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. PT at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The Beverly Hilton is the venue for the music industry's most prestigious pre-Grammy party hosted by veteran executive Clive Davis, who discovered Houston.

In an industry flooded with novelty artists, who disappear after scoring one hit, Houston's longevity was unquestioned when she released her debut single, the ballad "You Give Good Love" in February 1985. The song's soothing opening ad-libs displayed her soulful roots while also celebrating her pop sensibilities.

Houston's sound was distinct, and clearly separated her from the funk-laden stylings of the era's other female R&B singers. Plus, she was a model who appeared in "Glamour" and "Cosmopolitan" magazines.

Houston's sound made sense when considering her pedigree. She was the perfect melding of the styles of her mother, gospel singer Cissy Houston; cousin, 1960s pop singer Dionne Warwick; and godmother, queen of soul Aretha Franklin.

Houston's self-titled debut album topped the charts and was certified diamond. Her career was impenetrable throughout the release of several follow up albums, 1987's "Whitney," 1990's "I'm Your Baby Tonight," and 1992's "The Bodyguard" soundtrack.

Houston's fans were concerned when she married R&B bad boy Bobby Brown in 1992, but they professed their happiness.

By the late 1990s, Houston's drug problems began to become tabloid fodder. In a 2002 interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer, Houston admitted to her struggles, but maintained that she was doing fine.

The public received its first real glimpse of Houston behind-the-scenes in 2004 when she appeared on Brown's reality se! ries "B eing Bobby Brown." The bad publicity move depicted Houston as profane, combative, and delusional, seemingly supporting the behavior of someone on drugs.

Among the saddest indications of Houston's fall was her 2009 comeback album, "I Look To You." While the album received positive reviews, her live performances signaled that the damage to her voice was beyond repair.

Concertgoers stormed out of her 2010 "Nothing But Love World Tour" angry, complaining that Houston was not fit to sing live, and they demanded that their ticket costs be refunded.

On stage, Houston made light of her vocal struggles, and even seemed to be confident when doing so.

But the public scrutiny intensified, and was followed by additional stints in rehab.

While the cause of death has not yet been revealed, one can only wonder whether it was drug-related.

Anyone who remembers Houston's early work and the impact it had on music can only be saddened by her death.

I extend condolences to her family and friends, especially her daughter, Bobbi Kristina.

Print Friendly

Short trip to Jakarta | Photo by Azlan DuPree

Pernah tak terfikir,
kau dan aku,
duduk berbicara,
hati ke hati,
seperti saat itu.
di padang itu.

padang luas yang menjadi tempat kejadian,
kau baring di riba ku,
mengalun irama merdu dengan siulanmu,
sambil kau membaca buku kegemaranmu.

Gila !
memang gila !!
Tapi entah mengapa,
aku rasa,
aku rindukan saat itu.
tolonglah, tolonglah, tolonglah.

aku rindukan kamu,
aku rindukan kamu,
aku rindukan kamu,
yang hanya, dalam khayalku.

sekeping gambar, sebuah nesan. sebuah kenangan.
Jangan lupakan aku.
aku di sini, tetap menunggu.

Apabila rakyat mempunyai wang, mereka berbelanja.

— berita harian online

Cheaper transit with MyRapid card?

PETALING JAYA: RapidKL users may enjoy cheaper public transport fares than normal users with the MyRapid card in the near future.

National transport company Prasarana official Masnizam Hisham hinted at this when Prasarana was asked why the MyRapid card was being favoured over the already-existing Touch 'n Go smart card.

"(It is currently the) same rate for Touch n Go and the MyRapid card, but we intend to make the MyRapid card more convenient for the user."

"There will be advantages of using the MyRapid card. Perhaps in later parts of the year, we'll have price differentiation when it comes to parking and also when you want to use (it) for the Ampang, Kelana Jaya and (KL) Monorail lines," she told reporters at a press conference at the Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa.

According to the Economics Online website, price differentiation (or price discrimination) is simply charging a different price for the same good or service.

A May 2008 European Metropolitan Transport Authorities (EMTA) report divided price discrimination into two areas: journey and passenger.

"Some modes cost less to operate than others; off-peak services are cheaper to provide than peak services; it costs less to cater for short trips than for long ones," it read.

Passenger-type discrimination, it added, could come in the form of concession fares involving students, senior citizens or the disabled.

One example of journey-type price discrimination may be seen in Singapore's EZ-link card, currently used on the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) and buses there.

EZ-link users pay cheaper rates for public transport than those who opt for flat fares.

Currently, Touch 'n Go as well as MyRapid card users pay the same rates as normal RapidKL users. Their only advantage at the moment is not having to wait in line to buy tickets during rush hour.

Today, Masnizam declined to elaborate on what Prasarana had in mind over price discrimination.

However, she said that the MyRapid card was merely a rebranding of RapidKL's stored-value ticket, and that it would complement the Touch 'n Go system.

Having a better control

Prasarana chief Zulkifli Mohd Yusoff – who was also present- echoed this sentiment, adding that public transport users here could still use Touch 'n Go to get around on RapidKL's routes.

"Touch 'n Go will still be there. We will still give the public the choice, because some people have Touch 'n Go for the highways, and they can use it for public transport."

"We want to be self-sufficient…We want to have a better control of our products and services. Having our own card will give us that advantage, (with us) not relying on another company or another system," he said.

Currently available for use on the Ampang and Kelana Jaya RapidKL lines, the card would also be extended to the KL Monorail.

Prasarana, Zulkifli added, was also in talks with My Rapid Transit's (MRT) project owners – MRT Corp- to integrate the MyRapid card system there.

Using the MyRapid card for Keretapi Tanah Melayu's (KTM) Komuter, he said, was also "in the pipeline".

Will liars and swindlers of taxpayers' money go to Heaven?

Parliamentary panel was told NFC cannot use loans for property

By Yow Hong Chieh
February 10, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 — The Finance Ministry had told a parliamentary committee last November that there was no provision that permits the National Feedlot Corporation (NFCorp) to use its federal loan to purchase property.

A ministry official had disclosed this to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) during a meeting convened to discuss the NFCorp issue and was "very specific" that such loans could not be used for purposes other than what had been specified, Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua revealed today.

Pua (picture), who sits on the PAC, said the senior official had explained during the meeting on November 23, 2011 that the purpose of each drawdown must be clearly stated, and that the ministry had never received an application from NFCorp to purchase property.

"Therefore if the senior MoF official was telling the truth when testifying with the PAC, then Wan Shahinur Izmir (Salleh) must be lying through his teeth to defend the indefensible," Pua said in a statement.

Wan Shahinur Izmir, NFCorp's chief executive, said yesterday that the company had the right to use its RM250 million soft loan from the government as it saw fit, even to invest in property, as long as it repaid the interest.

He was responding to claims by PKR that NFCorp had purchased two luxury condominiums worth RM34 million in Singapore's posh Marina Bay Suites.

Wan Shahinur Izmir said the company had decided that it would make better use of the money by investing in property during a break in business operations caused by the government's decision to suspend construction of an abattoir that would have been rented to NF! Corp.

Pua said PAC has yet to be presented with documents relating to NFCorp — including the loan agreement, schedule, terms and conditions of the loan drawdown and financial reports — despite specifically requesting for them at the November meeting.

"It was decided during the meeting that the next meeting shall be held at the soonest possible time in January to ensure that the PAC is able to get to the bottom of the scandal," he said.

"It is unfortunate that no meeting has yet been called by the PAC chairman to date on this matter... We hope that the matters will not be delayed further as the rakyat deserves to know the truth, and nothing but the truth."

NFCorp hit the headlines following last year's Auditor-General's Report, and has continued to hog the limelight after it was linked to federal minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Jalil's family.

The publicly-funded company is headed by her husband, Datuk Seri Mohamad Salleh Ismail. Their three children, including Wan Shahinur Izmir, also hold executive posts in the company.

PKR has since made several revelations relating to the scandal, including NFCorp's purchase of two luxury condominium units in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, and the alleged use of project funds to pay for Shahrizat and her family's personal expenses.

The opposition party has also alleged that Shahrizat's family used nearly RM600,000 from NFCorp's funds to settle their credit card bills in 2009.

But the management of NFCorp has maintained that the credit card expenses were solely for business purposes.

It has also denied allegations that funds from the RM250 million government loan were channelled into its accounts before the loan agreement was signed.

Shahrizat applied for three weeks' leave from her duties last month after new allegations of bribery surfaced. She has since resumed her duties.

On Wednesday, she was called in for questioning by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commiss! ion (MAC C).

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced last month Putrajaya would appoint an auditor to scrutinise NFCorp's books in light of accusations made against the company.

DESIDERATA: I must thank MI for running gOod stories regardless of whether UMNO, UMCA or PKR, DAP miscreants have their backsides exposed. Frankly, I don't care whether the NFC's topguns go to Heaven or Hell. We the Rakyat must make sure they are hauled second to the Cpourts to answer many charges, now they have been exposed by the Court of Public Opinion, yes?

Faith is not a bottle of vodka martini

Faith is a belief system that comes from within. It is not something that can be, to paraphrase Britain's fictitious spy, James Bond's famous line, "shaken not stirred".

In short, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's faith in Islam is not a bottle of vodka martini.

Yes I am writing this in response to Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria's remarks over Najib's visit to Batu Caves in conjunction with Thaipusam.

An online media report quoted Harussani as saying: "Najib's visit is blasphemous. I have been telling this to him for years."

It also quoted Harussani as saying that Najib "sacrificed his faith" and that it was an "idolatrous act" on Najib's part when he attended the Thapusam festival on Tuesday.

Najib has been visiting Batu Caves for the past three years.

How can Najib's Islamic faith be shaken and stirred when his motive of being there is purely political, not religious?

He was there to announce about the funds for the temple and additional Tamil schools, hence Harussani's contention that Najib joined Thaipusam celebration does not hold water.

From a political perspective, one can decipher Najib's "nambikei" (trust) speech as a bait for election.

At the end of the day, Najib & Co must obtain the people's trust to form the next government at the 13th general election.

Harussani does not need to do so since his appointment as mufti, by convention, is done by the sultan.

It is also vital for Najib to be present in Batu Caves, Selangor, since 52% of the voters in Selangor are non-Malays.

My second point would look at the issue from the Islamic perspective.

Islam is a religion of reason

The Islamic civilisation had world reknowned scholars such as Avicenna because arguments are based on facts and Muslim scholars then were able to reason.

Unfortunately, Harussani has not given any reasoning in lashing out at Najib.

Based on the news report, Harussani also did not present his argument by using the four sources of Islamic as his basis for argument. The four are Al- Quran, As-Sunnah, Ijma and Qiyas.

The Sunnah are actions and quotations of Prophet Muhammad that is recorded in the Hadith.

Ijma is the general consensus among Muslim jurists (ulama) on a particular issue whereas qiyas refers to process of legal deduction where jurists are allowed to argue by using the Quran and Sunnah.

As a mufti which is equivalent to the top most religious official, Harussani's statement is detrimental to Malaysian Muslims as it gives the impression that the faith of the Muslims can be shaken and stirred.

It also serves to belittle Islam to the Western world that has not wholly come out of Islamophobia since the 9/11 incident in 2011 where Muslim terrorists crashed two airlines onto the World Trade Center in America.

MAS may have crippled Sabah tourism

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has cautioned that the state tourism industry will face a challenging year due to Malaysia Airlines (MAS) recent decision to cut several flights to and from the state.

"The rationalization will especially affect the Japanese and Western Australia markets", said Sabah Minister of Tourism, Culture & Environment Sabah, Masidi Manjun recently.

"There are now no direct flights between Sabah and Japan. As for Australia, STB (Sabah Tourism Board) is working hard with other airlines to continue offering Sabah holiday packages," he said.

Masidi also maintained that it was premature, in fact short-sightedness for MAS to cancel the KK-Perth route.

"It should have continued to develop the route as there was very strong growth of Australian arrival in Sabah last year, i.e 33.3 percent. I am sure the route would have eventually been very profitable for MAS in a relatively short period of time," he explained.

He noted that recent news reported strong public opinion against the route cuts into Sabah by Malaysia Airlines affecting direct air access from Australia, Korea and Japan as well as the suspension of Malaysia Airlines low cost carrier, Firefly.

He added that as for this year, Sabah is targeting regional and domestic markets and is working closely with local industry players to improve the quality of its products, as well as packaging attractive holiday offers during low-season.

"We are also looking into collaborating with 3-star hotels to offer affordable holiday packages during non-peak season to achieve the 2012 projection of 2.93 million visitors. This means we have to do better, and be more aggressive.

"We are open to work with other airlines to achieve this target," he said.

2.84 million visitors

Touching on last year's tourists arrival in Sabah, he noted that it was a record-breaking all-time high with 2.84 millions visitors.

The figure not only exceeded Sabah Tourism Board's (STB) arrival projection of 2.64 million for 2011 but has also achieved their 2012 projection of 2.75 million visitors.

"It is a 13.6 percent increase compared to 2010's total arrival and an estimated RM4.98 billion in tourism receipts, proving the importance of air accessibility for the industry," he said.

Masidi congratulated the tourism players in the state for this better-than-expected result.

He attributed this to the close rapport between STB and the industry players, and their hard work.

"STB's marketing strategies were very effective and everyone has worked on 'overdrive' mode to ensure success," he said.

While acknowledging that it was an unpredictable year last year, with the flight issues, he was nonetheless pleased to note that Sabah recorded double digit growth every month since March last year.

"This consistency of growth shows the strong demand of visitors coming to our state be it for leisure or business. 96% of these arrivals come by air.

"The numbers show it all, air accessibility into Sabah is essential and the only way for the industry to grow," said Masidi.

Strong markets indicated were from China (including Hong Kong) at 37.6% growth and Australia (33.3%). Despite recent Japanese tsunami crisis, the Japanese market remained strong at 18.4% growth.

Domestic tourists recorded the highest number of visitors of 1.99 million or an increase of 17% compared to 2010.
