Did Wanita Umno abuse NFC funds...

kt pkr 5 arrest fariz musaJingga 13, the PKR-linked NGO that has been harping on the National Feedlot Centre controversy, suspects that the RM250 million government soft loan given to the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) has also been abused by Wanita Umno.

"Jingga 13 challenges (Wanita Umno chief) Shahrizat Abdul Jalil who just returned from performing umrah to deny that not a sen of NFC funds has been channelled to Wanita Umno," said chief coordinator of the NGO, Fariz Musa (left).
Fariz noted that the women, family and community development minister is seen to be dragging the women's wing into the scandal involving her family, and diverting the issue by claiming that the attacks against her are aimed at destroying the wing.

"The question is whether the NFC fund has also been abused for the purpose of  Wanita Umno when she tried to drag in (Wanita Umno)?

"Shahrizat must explain the matter with full transparency, honesty and truth, more so when she had been to Mecca three times in two-and-a-half months," he said in a statement today.

Jingga 13 also urged the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to take immediate action against the NFC in a transparent and professional manner.

shahrizat general hospital 050212Facing pressure from both the opposition and within her own movement to resign over the NFC controversy, Shahriz! at (r ight in photo) yesterday reiterated that she will soldier on.

NFC's chairperson Mohamed Salleh Ismail, who is also Shahrizat's husband, is accused of mishandling the RM250 million government soft loan.

The NFC project is aimed at reducing Malaysia's beef imports but the Auditor-General Report 2010 has stated that the project is very far off the target.

Following this, several PKR leaders have "exposed" how the RM250 million soft loan was used for non-cattle rearing related matters, such as purchases of luxury condominiums in Kuala Lumpur.

The funds were also allegedly used for a plot of prime land in Putrajaya and for the purchase of a luxury car. - malaysiakini

Shahrizat returns from leave with all guns blazing - not slayed the ghost of the “cattle condo” scandal but reared more monsters

Media statement by Lim Kit Siang in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, 6th February 2012:

Shahrizat returns from leave with all guns blazing - not slayed the ghost of the "cattle condo" scandal but reared more monsters

Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, the Wanita UMNO leader and Minister for Women, Family and Community Development, has returned from her three-week leave from Cabinet with all guns blazing but instead of slaying the ghost of the RM330 million "cattle condo" scandal, she has only reared more monsters.

When announcing her leave on January 12, Shahrizat said: "I hope the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will be able to investigate whether or not I was involved in any of the decisions made by the government on the NFC in which my husband, Datuk Seri Dr Mohammad Salleh Ismail, is the executive chairman."

Has Shahrizat been cleared of any impropriety, abuse of power or conflict of interest in the RM330 million NFC "cattle condo" scandal by the MACC?

The answer is in the negative. As the purpose of her Ministerial leave has not been achieved, shouldn't her Cabinet leave be extended until a clear answer is available?

In the absence of any unequivocal exoneration by the MACC, the only alternative open to Shahrizat is to rebut one by one the many specific allegations of abuses of public funds or her knowledge/complicity, for instance allegations like the RM13.8 million used for purchasing luxury condominiums in Bangsar, RM10 million to purchase a luxury condominium in Singapore, RM3.4 million for plots of land in Putrajaya, RM830,000 for holiday trips, RM530,000 for a luxury car, payment of RM600,000 credit card bill for Shahrizat's family, etc.

Shahrizat has not done this but instead launched a deplorable and most unbecoming below-the-belt attack against Rafizi Ramli, PKR strategic director, who had led the three-month exposes of the RM330 million NFC scandal – further highlighting the weakness of her case!

What cannot escape attention of astute political observes is that Shahrizat had been abandoned by the UMNO leadership to fend on her own – in the face of increasing pressures for her to accept responsibility and resign from the Cabinet coming not only from her predecessor as Wanita Umno chief, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz and her current Deputy Wanita Umno chief, Datuk Kamila Ibrahim but also different levels of UMNO leadership whether from former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir or Cheras Umno division head Daltuk Syed Ali Alhabshee.

This reflects the growing impotence and isolation of Datuk Seri Najib Razak as Prime Minister and UMNO President to provide the political leadership and set the political pace in UMNO and Barisan Nasional.

Just before the Chinese New Year, the MCA President Datuk Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek in an interview blamed the Barisan Nasional government, "particularly embattled minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abd Jalil", for the "poor handling" of the RM330 million "cattle condo" scandal, causing the public to perceive the National Feedlot Centre (NFC) project as "real rotten".

Have the four MCA Cabinet Ministers the political courage to put things right by insisting at Wednesday's Cabinet meeting that Shahrizat should extend her Ministerial leave until she is cleared of any abuse of power and/or conflict of interest in the RM330 million NFC scandal, and better still, to ask for a full-scale Royal Commission of Inquiry into the NFC scandal?

Unlike MCA, DAP will not permit but will take disciplinary action against any DAP member caught attending Perkasa functions

Media statement by Lim Guan Eng in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, 6th February 2012:

Unlike MCA, DAP will not permit but will take disciplinary action against any DAP member caught attending Perkasa functions

Unlike MCA, DAP will not permit any member to attend Perkasa functions but will take disciplinary action against any DAP member caught doing so. For any Malaysian to attend Perkasa functions not only lends legitimacy to Perkasa's objectives of reducing non-Malays to 2nd or 3rd class citizens, but also that UMNO's racial dominance is more important than the critical issues of human rights, corruption and abuse of power.

I will not stoop to the level of MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, who has launched personal attacks against me just to avoid answering the question why MCA will not ban but still permit its members and supporters to attend Perkasa's functions. Today MCA Deputy President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said in The Star that MCA is still studying the agenda of members attending Perkasa's functions.

This is an admission by Liow of links between MCA members and Perkasa. DAP calls on Chua Soi Lek to reverse this irrational and irresponsible decision and instead follow DAP's example of banning MCA members and supporters from attending Perkasa's events. Is MCA willing to take a bold and uncompromising stand opposing all forms of racism and extremism even though Perkasa is openly supported by UMNO?

Chua should also stop his defence of Perkasa distributing "white pows" packets was not done on purpose.(New Straits Times 4 February 2012) Chua's claim that Perkasa did not distribute "white pows" on purpose was disputed by former Sri Desa MCA branch chairperson Dr Collin Tiew. Dr Colin Tiew said that he did tell Ibrahim that "white pows" is not suitable but Ibrahim did not bother. Chua should stop being apologists for Perkasa's claim that they did not distribute the "white pows" on purpose, as this serves to help Perkasa deceive not only oneself but others too.

At every Chinese New Year event attended by me, people have not only expressed their anger at Perkasa's 'white pows' act of deliberately trampling rudely over the sensitivities of the Chinese community. However there is also disappointment at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib's refusal to condemn Perkasa and Najib's light dismissal of this gross insult as a "social experience".

Is the Prime Minister's refusal to condemn Perkasa caused by BN also distributing "white pows" during the BN Chinese New Year event in Seri Setia, Selangor. MCA Kelana Jaya division chief Ong Chong Swen had not denied that white envelopes with BN logos were distributed during the BN Chinese New Year event. If that is the case, then BN should immediately apologise to the Chinese community and stop such wrong practices.

In contrast, PAS has displayed openness in respecting the Chinese community by distributing not only ang pow, mandarin oranges and Chinese New Year cards to market traders but also to a pork seller, with his pork openly displayed. Has any UMNO leader done what PAS leaders have done?

MCA and Chua Soi Lek should ban MCA members from attending Perkasa's functions to send a clear and unequivocal message to Perkasa that right-thinking Malaysians, including the entire non-Malay community, will have nothing to do with a racist and extremist organization.

Itulah dia HAsan Ali.

Hanya menjadi perkakas UMNO selama-lamanya. Samalah seperti Chandra Muzaffar, Ezam Mat Nor, Lokman Adam dsbnya.

The abuse of EPF to extend soft loans to low-cost housing purchasers is a blatant attempt by the Ministry of Finance to circumvent the need to add to the Federal Government debt

Joint Media statement by Nurul Izzah Anwar and Tony Pua Kiam Wee in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, 6th February 2012:

The abuse of EPF to extend soft loans to low-cost housing purchasers is a blatant attempt by the Ministry of Finance to circumvent the need to add to the Federal Government debt

What appears to be a routine and noble scheme to assist the poor who are unable to secure bank financing to purchase their low-cost housing units has stirred controversy ove-r how the Employees Provident Fund is being abused by the Federal Government for political motives.

Under normal circumstances, any welfare programmes will be funded by the Federal Government through its tax revenues. In the event that tax revenues prove insufficient, the Federal Government may issue bonds to raise money to finance its deficit expenditure. Again under normal circumstances, EPF could subscribe to the bonds issued by the Federal Government, hence in effect lending to the Federal Government.

It is hence extremely odd that the Minister of Federal Territories and Urban Well-Being, Datuk Raja Nong Chik Nong Raja Zainal Abidin announced that the Employee Provident Fund will be extending RM1.5 billion in loans directly to those who failed to secure commercial loans to purchase their houses.

The difference between the two approaches is that the Federal Government is considered a low-risk borrower and hence the contributions by Malaysian workers to the EPF are considered safe, while the loans to those who failed to obtain commercial housing loans are considered very high-risk borrowers.

We have over the past week attacked the Government for putting EPF funds at risk. However, the fact that the Government could have easily circumvented the entire controversy and still achieve the objectives of helping the poor by issuing bonds to the EPF, arouses suspicion that something is amiss.

We can only conclude that the Government did not want to borrow directly from EPF, and instead passed the buck to EPF to lend directly to the low-cost housing purchasers because the Government does not want to further increase further to its much criticised and already high debt levels. The Federal Government debt has reached RM456 billion as at the end of 2011, which is a 88.4% increase from RM242 billion 5 years ago in 2006.

Will our debt levels expected to increase significantly in the next year as a result of massive infrastructure projects such as the RM53 billion Klang Valley MRT, the RM7.1 billion West Coast Expressway, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) is attempting all means to reduce its debt obligations.

Instead of issuing debt papers, the MoF is attempting to hide its debt exposure by issuing Government guarantees instead. Therefore, the EPF is being asked to lend RM1.5 billion to those who failed to secure loans from banks, and the loans will be in some form "guaranteed" by the Federal Government. This way, the RM1.5 billion will not be reflected as an increase Federal Government debt.

In the current climate of sovereign credit crisis, especially in Europe as epitomised by the Greek financial fiasco, the Federal Government is attempting what is called "off-balance sheet financing" to hide from public view its total debt exposure. In fact, as at the end of 2010, the Government's contingent liability i.e., loans which were "guaranteed" by the Government but are not directly part of the Federal Government debt has reached RM96.9 billion in 2010, which is a sharp 14.9% increase over RM84.3 billion in 2009.

In the event that some of these guaranteed loans goes into default, then the Federal Government will be directly exposed to the debt and this will trigger a debt induced financial crisis in Malaysia. For example, the government guarantee for Port Klang Free Zone project's RM3.6 billion has resulted in the Federal Government having to extend at least RM4.6 billion in loans to bail-out the project. The cost is further expected to increase to RM12.5 billion.

Apart from MoF debt papers, there are already alternatives available to help the poor. Cagamas Bhd was set up in 1987, enabling banks to extend more housing loans. And recently in 2008, the government established a fund to provide loans for farmers, small traders, i.e those without fix incomes to buy low and medium cost housing.

Unfortunately, to be constantly perceived by the rakyat as the champion for the poor, the government is now coming up with a new and ill thought scheme - utilizing EPF monies to hide its current debt levels.

The MoF must not renegade from its responsibility as not only the caretaker of our coffers but also as a prudent decision maker as MoF screens and approves all decisions made by EPF's investment panel.

The Ministry of Finance and the Federal Territories Ministry must hence come clean on why it has chosen to risk the worker's retirement savings and the real reason why the Government can't fund the housing for the poor directly. The MoF must solve its own financial problems and not for the Malaysian workers to bear the burden of the BN government's follies.

Pakatan mourns 3rd year of Perak putsch...

Perak Pakatan Rakyat leaders marked the last day of Chinese New Year celebrations by "mourning" the third anniversary of their ouster as the Perak state government.
perak 3rd anniversary tree 060212
The short gathering under a tree at Medan Istana, Ipoh, where they once held the historic state assembly 'sitting' on Mar 3, 2009, saw lawmakers from the three parties wearing black. They also held a minute of silence.

After singing the national anthem and several speeches later, Pakatan state assemblypersons released black balloons to symbolise the rise of democracy.

Contacted after the event, former Perak Menteri Besar Nizar Jamaluddin said that the Feb 6 was a blight in Malaysia's history.

On this day in 2009, Umno's Zambry Abdul Kadir was appointed
the new menteri besar after the palace ruled that Nizar no longer commanded a majority in the Perak legislative assembly.

This was triggered after three Pakatan state lawmakers quit their respective parties and pledged ! allegian ce
to BN two days earlier.

Next year, leaders will wear red

"We must remember, that on this day three years ago, BN had robbed the people with the help of the police and the Election Commission.

"The people must be aware of Perak's history, that the current state government has denied them of their rights. Umno does not respect their rights nor the laws," said Nizar.

perak 3rd anniversary tree 060212DAP state secretary Nga Kor Ming said the public must remember that despite the court rulings that went in BN's favour, it was Pakatan that was voted into power in March 2008.

"As Abraham Lincoln once said, the only legitimate government in the world is one of the people, by the people and for the people.

"No one can deny the fact that BN does not have the mandate of the people of Perak," he said.

Nga notes that despite it being Chap Goh Meh, the last day to mark Chinese New Year, Pakatan leaders were "forced" to wear black, instead of red.

"We have to mourn the death of democracy. Next year we will gather again, but we will wear red once we win back Perak and gather under the same tree," he said. - malaysiakini

Nurul Izzah Anwar & Tony Pua Media Statement on RM1.5 billion EPF funds abused by MoF for low-cost housing

Pot calling the kettle black

If DAP should distance itself from the "religious" PAS then MCA must be suckers for sleeping with the ultra-racist and corrupt UMNO ! Unless MCA themselves are equally as shitty as their "masters". ( Hey.....what am I saying...of course they are ! ) How dare these UMNO lapdogs challenge DAP ? Don't they know that MCA is a race-based racist party ? Or MIC for that matter ? All parties in BN are racist parties.

No race is mentioned in PR component parties, right ? Does that not tell you something ? And to add salt to the worm infected wound in BN there's Perkasa, the sneaky mouth-piece of UMNO. Yes, Perkasa the shit-stirrers of racists remarks and champions of the "ketuanan" Melayu crap. Nobody has questioned the Malay rights issue. It is only made worse by these goons who demanded crutches where it was not needed. Now thanks to Perkasa, simple and ordinary Malays in UMNO are at a cross-road deciding between their ready rights and an evil and ex-premier's pet project called Perkasa !

And that porn-star president of MCA too should keep his filthy mouth shut and tell his "konchos" to disassociate from the very people who labelled the Chinese race as "pendatangs". And has he no balls to face up to that Ibrahim Ali who dished out "white" ang pow packets to elderly Chinese folks from old folks homes at a Chinese New Year dinner hosted by Perkasa recently. Have the Chinese in MCA no pride in themselves anymore ? Shame on them !
Stupid and shameless MCA !

Keep waiting — Lim Sue Goan

FEB 6 — According to the original plan, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak wished to hold the 13th general election in March or April this year. However, the plan was held back by various problems and even former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad advised that he should delay calling the election.

Dr Mahathir said that the BN has sufficient time to win more votes from groups, particularly the Chinese community. He said that he was confident Najib would probably secure a simple majority in Parliament, instead of the two-thirds control lost in the 2008 general election if the 13th general election was held today.

According to an assessment, it is almost impossible for the BN to win back the two-thirds majority and thus it should be considered as an accomplished mission if it can achieve the targets of not doing worse than the 2008 general election and winning back Selangor.

Since the BN needs more votes to keep federal power, the BN government has introduced other people-friendly plans, in addition to giving out money. The government introduced the Skim Amanah Rakyat (Sara) 1 Malaysia, which guarantees a return on investment of 12 per cent per annum over five years; and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) will channel RM1.5 billion to the Federal Territories Foundation as part of a special funding scheme to help eligible buyers purchase public housing units in the city.

Umno leaders have taken alternative measures to gain support instead of relying only on transformation plans as the plans lack direct political effects. Therefore, the pace of the transformation plans has been slowed down.

British business magazine The Economist recently criticised that Najib's reforms have not only offended Umno conservatives but as well failed to impress swing voters.

However, Umno cannot overly please the grassroots and Malay enterprises who rely on government projects, or take the radical chauvinist line to please kampung and conservative Malays. At the same time, Umno needs non-Malay votes. Particularly, in some constituencies where the ruling and alternative coalitions are equally strong, Chinese and Indian voters will play the role of "kingmaker".

Taking a multi-faceted strategy, however, has brought some problems, including the lack of direction and focus.

In addition to various transformation plans, the BN also introduced various programmes, including the Bantuan Rakyat 1 Malaysia (BR1M), 1 Malaysia Shop (KR1M), 1 Malaysia Public Housing (PR1MA), and 1 Malaysia Unit Trust. There are indeed many benefits offered but too confusing to digest.

Reform programmes need much concentration and more resources to achieve, but too many programmes have distracted attention.

If the people think that the government is vacillating in reforms, Najib will then find it difficult to win swing votes.

Another disadvantage is many cases are unresolved. Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil is back to work after taking leave for three weeks, but the National Feedlot Centre (NFC) scandal remains unsolved.

The Court of Appeal recently granted leave to Teoh Beng Hock's brother Teoh Meng Kee to seek a review of the coroner's open verdict on the political aide's death, but the three Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers involved have not been charged yet. It is believed that the case will remain unsolved even when the next general election is held.

In addition, the Jalan Sultan Ismail controversy, the rare earth plant issue, the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) infighting and the split among Sabah BN component parties should be solved before the election is held or they might evolve into a big problem.

The BN hopes to hold the next general election as soon as possible, particularly when it has almost finished distributing the RM500 BR1M aid. However, there are still too many problems to be solved and therefore, it has no choice but to keep waiting for a good timing. — mysinchew.com

Cabinet should extend Shahrizat's leave...

pakatan convention alor setar lim kit siangWanita Umno leader Shahrizat Abdul Jalil should remain on her ministerial leave, since the MACC has not cleared her of connection with the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) scandal said DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang.

"Has Shahrizat been cleared of any impropriety, abuse of power or conflict of interest in the RM330 million NFC 'cattle condo' scandal by the MACC?

"The answer is in the negative.  As the purpose of her ministerial leave has not been achieved, shouldn't her Cabinet leave be extended until a clear answer is available?" said Lim (
right) in a statement today.

"Shahrizat ... has returned from her three-week leave from cabinet with all guns blazing but instead of slaying the ghost of the RM330 million cattle condo scandal, she has only reared more monsters," he quipped.

He was referring to the women, family and community development minister's attacks on her critics since her return last week.

Instead, he said, Shahrizat should rebut the "many specific allegations of abuses of public funds or her knowledge/complicity" in the scandal, citing the many alleged cases of personal spending using a government soft loan for NFC's cattle project.

NONEAmong these, he said, were the RM13.8 million used for purchasing luxur! y condom iniums in Bangsar, RM10 million to purchase a luxury condominium in Singapore, RM3.4 million for plots of land in Putrajaya, RM830,000 for holiday trips, RM530,000 for a luxury car, payment of RM600,000 credit card bill for Shahrizat's family.

"Shahrizat  has not (countered the allegations) but instead launched a deplorable and most unbecoming  below-the-belt attack against Rafizi Ramli, PKR's strategic director who had led the three-month exposes of the RM330 million NFC scandal – further highlighting the weakness of her case!" he said.

Yesterday Shahrizat took a pot shot at Rafizi calling him a"stalker"
and an aspirant for the post of Umno Wanita chief.

Najib's 'impotence'

Lim, who is also Ipoh Timor MP, also slammed Prime Minister Najib Razak for his inability to handle the situation both publicly and within Umno.

kuala terengganu by election bn launching machinery 050109 rafidah"What cannot escape attention ... is that Shahrizat has been abandoned by the Umno leadership to fend on her own – in the face of increasing pressures for her to accept responsibility and resign from the cabinet coming not only from her predecessor as Wanita Umno chief, Rafidah Aziz (right) and her current Deputy Wanita Umno chief, Kamila Ibrahim but also different levels of Umno leadership whether  from former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir or Cheras Umno division head Syed Ali Alhabshee.

"This reflects the growing impotence and isolation of Najib Razak as prime minister and Umno president to provide the political leadership," said! Lim.

He also took a parting shot at MCA, Umno's largest BN partner, asking if its four ministers and its party president Chua Soi Lek, who had gone on record as critical of the scandal, would insist on extending Shahrizat's leave at the cabinet meeting next Wednesday or better yet, dcmand a royal commission of inquiry into the scandal.

Cuti Shahrizat patut dipanjangkan

Thousands pay homage to Lord Muruga

GEORGE TOWN: Thousands of Hindus thronged the city early this morning to pay homage to Lord Muruga Perumaan as the silver chariot procession takes to the road to mark the start of the Thaipusam festival.

Lord Muruga Perumaan is the most revered deity among the Tamil-speaking Hindu community.

Organised by the Nattukottai Chettiar Tamil sub-ethnic community, also known as Nagarathar, the chariot procession carrying a statue of Lord Muruga Perumaan marks the start of the annual four-day festival.

Previously, the silver chariot was made of wood.

Lord Muruga Perumaan began his annual journey on the chariot from the Nagarathars' spiritual home, Kovil Veedu in Lebuh Penang, at 6am.

The silver chariot is scheduled to reach his destination at Thandayuthabani Kovil, Waterfall, at midnight after travelling for some 15km across major roads in the city.

The chariot will return from Balathandayuthabani Kovil to Kovil Veedu in an overnight journey commencing at 6pm on Wednesday.

Thousands of coconuts were smashed on the road to give a cool feeling to the warm legs of the devotees following the procession.

Tomorrow will be a full kavadi day, in which thousands of devotees would show their love and gratitude to Lord Murugan Perumaan by carrying various types of kavadis to the Waterfall hilltop Bala Thandayuthabani Kovil.

Many devotees have gone bald to offer their hair to their Lord.

Thaipusan in Penang is the oldest Hindu religious-cultural festival celebrated in the country.

The festival is expected to attract some 800,000 people, including Hindus from other states and tourists.

Some 200 panthals (refreshment sheds) have been erected along the festival route, especially in the Waterfall area, to provide free food and drinks to devotees.

Undeniably, Penang Thaipusam has always been the grandest and vividly celebrated Hindu religious festival in the country.

The festival is also good for businesses in Penang, which are expected to generate over RM30 million in turnover.

Meanwhile in Kuala Lumpur, the silver chariot from the Maha Mariamman Temple in Jalan Tun HS Lee arrived at Batu Caves at about 2pm. Thousands of devotees followed the procession which started at midnight today to the Batu Caves temple.

EPF housing loans bid to hide debt...

NONEPakatan Rakyat today charged that the government's move to use RM1.5 billion from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) for a low cost housing loan scheme as an attempt to hide its national debt.

In a joint statement by Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah (right) and Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua, the duo said the move was unusual as welfare programmes are normally funded through tax revenues or by issuing bonds.

"We can only conclude that the government did not want to borrow directly from EPF, and passed the buck to EPF to lend directly to the low-cost housing purchasers because the government does not want to further increase its much criticised and already high debt levels."

The national debt, they added, had reached RM456 billion at the end of 2011, an 88.4 percent increase from 242 billion in 2006.

"Instead of issuing debt papers, the Finance Ministry is attempting to hide its debt exposure by issuing government guarantees instead.

Risking financial crisis

The scheme that the government has proposed asks the EPF to set aside RM1.5 billion as loan to those who fail to secure bank loans for low cost housing purchases.

The loans will also be 'guaranteed' by the federal government, which means the amount will not be reflected as an increase government debt, said Pua and Nurul Izzah.

NONE"In the event that some of these guaranteed loans go into default, then the federal government will be directly exposed to the debt and this will trigger a debt induced financial crisis in Malaysia."

For example, they said, the government's guarantee for RM3.6 billion Port Klang Free Zone has resulted in the government having to extend at least RM4.6 billion in loans to bail out the project.

"In the current climate of sovereign credit crisis, especially in Europe as epitomised by the Greek financial fiasco, the federal government is attempting what is called an 'off balance sheet financing' to hide from public view its total debt exposure."

The Finance Ministry and Federal Territories Ministry, they said, must come clean on its reason for risking worker's retirement savings and why it is unable to fund housing for the poor directly.

The loan scheme announced by FT Minister Raja Nong Chik recently has drawn fierce criticism from the public.

Nurul Izzah has called the move "vote buying"
ahead of the next general election using workers' savings as BN's private "piggy bank", while Pua has charged that the move violates the EPF Act 1991.

Malaysian Trade Union Congress(MTUC)
secretary-general Abdul Halim Mansor also issued a statement last week blasting the scheme.

We were in Singapore, PD, Temerloh, Kuantan and Ulu Tiram, Johor. Professionally I graduated from UKM and did my postgraduate training NUS, Singapore. While in the Army I pursued various programs like Tropical Medicine, Aerospace Medicine and finally an MBA.  While in the Military I had the pleasure of serving the King and country. I had served as part of the UN peacekeeping force in Cambodia and several Army and Air Force bases around Malaysia. I left the MAF in 1999. One thing that I realize is that I am not the kind of guy that can sit still and taking money from the sick people. I tried GP practice for 3 months and gave up when I could not get rid of the guilty conscious of taking money from the sick. Post military, I served in the corporate world in several capacity and currently working with a German company that is a world leader in Islamic Reinsurance. I stopped practicing professionally in 1999.I have strong views and sometimes quite rigid about them. Some labeled me as a firebrand. I started to blog when I realized it is almost impossible for me to be heard on the MSM. I write because I want to express myself and I like to read what others have to say. Continue to place your ‘nambikei’ in us, Najib tells Hindus

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak has called on Malaysian Hindus to continue to place their "nambikei" in the government.

With this trust, he said, the government would be able to effectively engage with and help the community overcome challenges and achieve personal visions for a better life.

"We remain committed to fulfilling all our promises to the community and we'll do what's needed to help people achieve their dreams," he said in his message in conjunction with the Thaipusam festival posted on his blogsite www.1malaysia.com.my.

Najib noted that Hindus marked Thaipusam by offering their thanks and sacrifice throughout the country.

He said many would also be making vows and praying for a better life and a secure happy future for their children.

"It's a basic human wish to improve and progress towards a better quality of life for oneself and our loved ones," Najib said, adding that the government knew and understood this instinct for progress.

The prime minister took the opportunity to extend his greetings to all Hindus in Malaysia as they observed Thaipusam.

"We can, once again, appreciate our diverse culture as Malaysian Hindus mark the auspicious day," he added.

Sabha, Sarwak, Ramly, Indra and Chin

By Chekukong

Free first story – just email me at pepstoriesforyou@gmail.com  and get a free copy of the e-story by return email.

My modest attempt at short story writing. Due to financial constraints, and the haughty attitude of local publishers, I decided to sell this e-book online. Some of the stories were written with my tears.

Sabha, Sarwak, Ramly, Indra and Chin

"But what are we to do?" asked Pak Din in a desperate voice.

"Yes indeed, it is a difficult situation" said Mani, his head bowed, staring emptily at the ground.

"Not to worry, we put our heads together, and we will definitely come up with a way to solve this crisis", commented Ah Lim, trying hard to sound optimistic, "we have always solved our village problems. Let's go have a teh tarik, and brainstorm and for sure we'll come up with something".

But in their hearts, though they believed they would somehow solve the problem, they knew it was going to be tough. And they haven't got much time either. The village cattle were dying one by one. And there were not many places they could hide them.

Slowly they turned around to face the other villagers crowding the field, and who were looking at them with expectations, and hope. Pak Din, Mani and Ah Lim were the people the villagers entrusted to solve their problems.

"Well?" asked one of the villagers, "have you decided what to do? Do you have a plan?"

The rest of the crowd murmured in unison, muttering and mumbling incoherently, moving uneasily among themselves. They were very worried. After all the cattle are gone, would it be the children next?

"Listen everyone," called out Pak Din, "this is indeed a very difficult matter. We have not yet come to a course of action. We are going to brainstorm now. Meanwhile, let's all go and have teh tarik first, then we'll see".

"What?" exclaimed a villager, "such a serious and dangerous situation that warrants immediate and urgent action, and you say go for teh tarik first? Never seen you people behave like this before."

"Are you guys serious ah?" queried another.

The crowd shook their heads disapprovingly. You could almost hear them gnashing their teeth. Everyone started voicing out their disapproval.

"Go for teh tarik? You guys giving a tre! at ah?, "asked one sarcastically.

"No lah," answered Pak Din, "too many of you. We will go bankrupt".

"Hold it friends," called out another villager sensing the situation was getting too hot, "since this matter is of such serious gravity and a correct and accurate course of action is necessary, I think it does require some serious thought to find the solution. Let's give our leaders some time to think about it. I am sure they will do their best in the shortest possible time."

There was not universal approval, but in the end everyone nodded in agreement.

"Thank you everyone," said Pak Din.

"For tonight, keep your cattle, goats and sheep in their sties, and hang lighted lamps around the sties. The brightness should help." suggested Ah Lim.

"And you might like to carry out periodic checks throughout the night. Remember to call out and make lots of noise if you see anything wrong, and we will all come out to help" said Mani, "and keep some something ready, be it a parang, an axe, a hoe or a changkul. And don't let your children out at night".

"Oh yes we certainly will", replied the villagers empathically, "if we catch it, it will surely be shorter by a head!"

And everyone dispersed, seeming to be giving their views to each other. Pak Din, Mani and Ah Lim heaved a sigh of relief and make their way to Maidin's teh tarik stall down the road.

"I think we need to get some outside help," suggested Mani, "it may be too big for us".

"Yes, perhaps so," agreed Pak Din, "what do you think Ah Lim?"

"I can agree to that suggestion by Mani, but why don't we see one more night? Maybe it might not happen again".

"All right then," agreed Pak Din and Mani together, "we'll discuss this again tomorrow morning."

After some drinks and light bantering, the trio then left to go do whatever chores they had.

Unnoticed, three strapping young lads were closely observing the proceedi! ngs. Aft er everyone had left, they made their way to the football field at the fringe of the nearby forest, and sat under the large flame of the forest tree. This was their favourite meeting place for the three best friends. Ramly, Indra and Chin were soon engaged in a very animated discussion.

At the first peep of the morning sun through the trees, with the village still heavily engulfed with the darkness and stillness of early morn, an ear piercing scream suddenly ripped through the village waking up everyone, except the heavy snorers, and had them rushing out of their houses. Most were in their sleeping garments but all were holding some weapon including bread knives expecting that the worst, whatever it was, had happened. It sounded like the scream came from Aru who lives at the far end of the village.

They all ran towards Aru's house where they found him in a state of fear. He was shivering, hardly able to speak. He pointed to his cows' sty a short distance away. The group made their way to the sty. The door was unlocked and opened. The same ghastly sight greeted them, a sight they have seen for the past weeks. Aru had five cows and they were his pride and joy. They were his wealth, his security. And he was breeding and selling the calves, and also one of the main suppliers of fresh milk in the village. And he hopes to save enough to send his son and daughter to the university when they finished their schooling. The children had so much wanted to become doctors so that they can help the poor people.

Now all his five cows were lying on the ground, dead as stones. It was not the animals' death that was ghastly, but the manner by which they died. There was blood all over the ground, with pieces of intestines, brains, gouged eyes, and other internal body parts strewn all over. It was cruel and brutal killing of the animals, with no care for the suffering inflicted. But the strange thing was that what
were left were basically just the bones wrapped by the skin. Outwardly everything was i! ntact. T he dead animals looked like deflated balloons. Whatever killed them did not devour everything. It appeared that only their innards were the meal.

"Looks like all the insides of the cows, the organs, were sucked out leaving only the skin and bones" observed Mani.

"Must have been something huge and powerful" enjoined Ah Lim.

"And has a humongous appetite too. Just imagine, five grown cows!" exclaimed Pak Din.

A huge crowd had gathered by then.

"I have never seen anything like this before", said one.

"See lah how serious this is," said another sorely, "and you go drinking teh tarik some more lah".

"When, whatever this is, runs out of cattle and sheep, will it go for our children?" said a really worried mother, "First it was one cow belonging to Samad, then three goats belong to Ali, now FIVE cows! I am really worried for our children".

Everyone concurred without hesitation.

"What are we going to do," wailed another mother.

"Maybe we should pray and perform some exorcism rites," suggested someone, "maybe that will chase it away".

"No it won't, it will only be a waste of time," opined another, "what we need is some concrete action".

As if on cue, a young voice spoke out.

"Dear brothers and sisters, uncles and aunties, we, I, Indra and Chin have been thinking deeply about this situation and seek to find a solution", said Ramly, "we would like to suggest a method whereby, hopefully, we can solve the problem".

"First of all, we cannot catch something if we don't know what it is. So we must find out what it is, and then try to trap or destroy it." added Indra.

Everyone listened with rapt attention.

"True, true,' they murmured.

"Let's listen to them some more," said somebody.

"Okay, we want to set conditions which will draw out this thing into the open, then we can see what it really is." said Indra.

"But we will need s! ome help from a cattle owner. Here's our plan," said Ramly, "we need to borrow a cow and we are going to tie it in the centre of our football field. This will be the bait to lure this thing out."

"Aha! Right, then we will be able to see what it is, and do whatever is necessary to disable it. Good idea," said Ah Lim.

"Really good thinking," agreed Pak Din.

"Of course we will do our utmost to ensure the safety of the cow. But please be realistic. This thing is dangerous. We may lose the cow," warned Indra.

"In which case, we the villagers will all chip in to repay the owner of the cow," said Pak Din earnestly.

"Darn good idea, if I ever heard one," Mani joined in.

"All right I will contribute a cow," volunteered Pak Mustafa standing nearby.

"That's decided then. We'll come and fetch your cow before nightfall," said Ramly.

"Also, nobody should be coming anywhere close to the designated area," added Chin, "Firstly it's dangerous, and secondly lots of human presence might frighten the thing away."

"Wish us luck," said Indra.

"Yes, good luck to you three young brave men. Everything depends on you. We sure hope you succeed," chorused the crowd so pleased that at last something was being done to stop the disasters befalling the village.

At dusk, Ramly, Indra and Chin went to Pak Mustafa's house and found him waiting for them.

"There he is,' said Pak Mustafa on seeing the youths, pointing to a cow tied to a tree, "He has just eaten, so there won't be a problem feeding him. He also takes well to strangers and will follow you".

"Thank you, Pak Mustafa," said Chin, "we will take good care of him and return him tomorrow morning depending on what happens. Please don't worry."

The trio untied the cow and led it to the middle of the football field where they had earlier on driven a stake into the earth, then proceeded to tie the cow to it. Nearby was a large pile of ! grass wh ich they had earlier collected, which they fed to the cow.

"Good thing we have no football match tomorrow morning otherwise we could not use the field," said Ramly as they made their way to the edge of the field where there was a large depression on the ground.

This was where they planned to sit in and hide from view. And they really made sure they were well fortified with food and drinks in case they got hungry in the night. They had packed three flasks of hot drinks, biscuits, desserts and their dinners. For good measure, they brought two baseball bats, three parangs and a length of rope.

"It's going to be a long night," said Indra, sitting down on the mat laid across the depression.

"When it gets late, we'll take turns to keep watch through the night," Ramly said, adjusting his thick pullover.

Then they quickly absorbed themselves with discussing football, their favourite sport. As the night ground on, their conversations grew less and less.

"It's 11 o'clock. Since I am not so sleepy yet, I will take the first watch. Chin will take the second and Ramly will take the next," said Indra and added, "by then it should be close to morning."

"What time is it?" asked Chin, rubbing his eyes, "anything yet?"

"It's 2. No, nothing yet," answered Indra.

"Okay, I'll take over now," Chin replied.

"Sure," Indra replied, "wait a sec, I think I hear something. Listen."

Chin cocked his ears. Yes indeed, there seems to be an unusual sound above the stillness of the night.

Sensing like something was going to happen, Chin gently shook Ramly to wake him.

"Uuuh…is there something up?" asked Ramly waking up.

"Maybe so, listen to that sound," said Chin.

Ramly listened hard then got up and peered towards the far end of the field which was uncleared jungle, largely unexplored because it was reputed to be a dangerous area. It fact, the football field was built at the outskirts! of the village, fringing the jungle.

"It sounds like something heavy and walking laboriously," Indra said.

"There seems also to be a low squealing sound which does not disturb the tranquillity of the night," said Ramly.

The trio strained their eyes the hardest they could to try to see what it was at the end of the field. There was pale moon hiding behind the clouds the light of which hardly cast any shadows. It was still dark, so dark you couldn't see an elephant easing itself.

"There it is, there it is," exclaimed Chin quietly, "it's there at the side, not at the end of the field."

"Yes, I see it too," said Ramly excitedly.

"Let's keep quiet lest we frighten it away," cautioned Indra.

As it moved ponderously out of the jungle, the trio were beginning to be able to make out its shape. It appeared to be a four-legged animal the height of a grown horse, about 2 meters tall. It had some stripes on the lower part of it body. The front part of it, where its head was, appeared to be very animated and un-symmetrical.

Slowly but surely it was making its way towards the tied cow in the middle of the field. The trio could barely hide their excitement.

"Should we make our move now?" asked Indra in a whisper.

"No, not yet, Let it get closer to the cow first," said Ramly, also in a whisper.

"I'm so darn excited I might just not be able to control nature's call right now," said Chin, grinning.

"Just a little more…it's good that the creature moves so slowly, " said Ramly, "okay, let's grab a parang each. Looks like we will be needing them."

The creature stopped about three meters from the cow, and looked around. It took a tentative step forward, then it stopped again. It appeared to be suspicious of the "offering". Then it seemed to cast all caution aside and advanced to the cow, clearly to make the cow its meal.

"NOW!" yelled Ramly, and together with Indra and Chin, climbed o! ut of th eir hiding place and raced towards the creature, waving the parangs and yelling at the top of their voices.

Just in time too, for the creature had reached the cow and was just about to devour it.

The clouds had thinned some, and a pale moonlight bathed the sports field giving some improved visibility. When the trio got closer to the creature, they were so shocked to find that it looked like a giant mosquito, big as a horse but had four heads! There was a big head, a small head beside it, and two little heads on the other side.

The four headed monster looked surprised for a moment, then turn to face the trio. Moving aggressively towards them, its eyes turned red almost like balls of fire, all eight of them. You could almost feel heat emanating from them.

Ramly, Indra and Chin raised their parangs, ready. They knew this would be fight to the death. Such a creature would give no quarters. They would be fighting for their lives.

Suddenly, the big head spat out something at Indra, who nimbly jumped out of the way. They had the shock of their lives at what actually came out of the mouth of the big head. It looked like a sword, which darted out with every intention to stab and went back into the mouth again.

"It's a proboscis," yelled Chin, "keep out of its way, it can stab you dead."

"Yes, so that's what it does. It uses the proboscis to stab into an animal's body and suck out all the insides of the animal" observed Indra.

"This looks like a monster mosquito, and a highly dangerous one. It will suck out the life of anything that it can lay its proboscis on. We must try to destroy it," resolved Ramly.

"Yikes! He almost got me," said an angry Chin, as the small head attempted to stab him with its sabre-like proboscis, "I'm going to get you, I tell you!"

Chin attempted to rush and plunge his parang into the small head, but the small head continued to flick out its proboscis, keeping Chin away.

The big head had an eve! n bigger proboscis and Ramly was having a hard time trying to effectively attack it.

Indra tried to attack the two little heads, but to no avail. The little heads had smaller proboscises but they attacked and defended in cooperation with each other.

The courageous trio continued jousting with the creature but could make little headway. Those proboscises were far too dangerous to take unnecessary risks. They could not even get close to the heads to be able to do any real damage. And any slip on their part, or just a bit too slow to get out of the way would be disastrous, they could get seriously injured.

"Since we cannot get the heads, let's try to attack its body," yelled Indra.

Except for Ramly who had the hardest task keeping the most dangerous head occupied, Chin and Indra took turns slipping to the side and behind the creature to attack its body with their parangs.

"The body is hard, it's so difficult to penetrate it with our parangs," said a disappointed Indra.

"Keep on trying in any way we can," said Chin, gritting his teeth as he continued to flail away at the creature.

"I think it's too tall, that's very disadvantages for us," said Ramly, still avoiding the periodic and sudden stabs of the big head's proboscis, "we need to bring it down to our level somehow."

"But how?" queried Indra, "every time we try to get near enough to it, it gets too dangerous."

It is some two hours of virtually non-stop battling. The trio was getting tired, while the creature seemed fresh as a daisy. Worse, because of their tiredness, they were having trouble moving fast enough to get out of the way of the proboscises. They were getting slight stabs and cuts here and there, some of which were bleeding and would eventually lead to a loss of strength. Though desperate, the trio never entertained the thought of giving up.

"It's for the people we are doing this," encouraged Ramly, "we must fight this evil to the end!"

"! Yes, to the end," said Indra with great determination, "however difficult it is to win."

"WE SHALL OVERCOME!" the trio chorus together signifying the strongest bond between themselves and their confidence to attain victory.

As they encouraged themselves and fought on, they began to feel their youthful strength slowly drain away. Would they soon fall they wondered quietly, but immediately banished the thought from their mind. The creature seemed to be getting stronger and stronger with each passing moment.

"WE WILL HELP YOU!!!" thundered a voice from the end of the field behind them.

The courageous trio turned around, taking care to take two steps back first to be out of range of those slashing proboscises.

They saw two figures in unfamiliar garb. As they came nearer, they saw that the duo each wore headgear, but different from each other. One of the headgears looked like a hornbill head, while the other was shaped like a rhino's head. In each of their hands they held a spear and a shield, and around their waists hung a sheathed parang.

Wow, some warriors! There was hope of victory at last thought Ramly, Indra and Chin.

"My name is Sawak," the hornbill introduced himself.

"And I'm Sabha," the rhino said in introduction.

"Our problem is how to reach those heads," said Chin to the duo, "they can reach us easily enough, but we cannot get to their heads. Their bodies are very hard and only concentrated hitting can break it. It seems the only way we can defeat it is to attack and kill the heads."

"I can see the problem, "said Sawak, "here is what we must do. We must cut off its legs. That will lower it by about one meter. That will bring its heads well with range for out attacks."

"Sawak and I will engage the big and small heads while Chin and Indra will attack the little heads," suggested Sabha, "in the meantime Ramly will slip in and out under the creature and cut off the legs."

"Let's do it ! now!", shouted Ramly.

They five of them approached the creature and quickly took up their positions.

Sabha and Sawak, with their shields to afford them protection and their long spears to keep the slashing proboscises at bay, were more than a match for the creature.

Chin and Indra had an easy time with the little heads. It was easier now, one to one.

Suddenly the creature let out a loud squeal and seemed to collapse before recovering to stand upright.

"Just chopped off one of its hind legs," shouted Ramly triumphantly from the rear of the creature, "now for the next one."

The creature seemed to panic. Its red eyes were now blinking instead of staring like before. It was now appearing to want to escape rather than fight some more.

"There goes another one," shouted Ramly as the hind end of the creature totally collapsed. Another hind leg had been cut off.

The creature was now standing only on its front legs and had much trouble moving and turning.

But as soon as Ramly started chopping at a front leg, his parang broke at the handle.

"Here take mine," yelled Sawak as he unsheathed his parang and tossed it to Ramly, all the while dexterously keeping the big head busy.

Sawak's parang was long and sharp and made Ramly's work easy. In a short time the front leg gave way. The creature was only balancing on one leg. But before long, the efficient Ramly chopped off the final leg and the creature collapsed totally to the ground with a loud sickening thud.

"Now we are equal," said Sabha sneering at the creature.

Indeed, the heads' proboscises were not as effective as before and could be easily avoided.

Sabha and Sawak skilfully maneuvered themselves around the big head and small head and on finding an opening, plunged their spears into the mouths of the creature causing it to squeal devilishly.

Meanwhile, Chin and Indra had managed to cut off the proboscises of the little heads and were busy trying to cut of! f its he ad.

Ramly proceeded to cut off the big head and it was hard, like armour.

Still it would not die.

Surely they would need more people to finish the job quicker.

The fighting five had not noticed that it was already dawn. And they also didn't notice that a large crowd of villagers had gathered at the edge of the field watching all that was going on with much fear and trepidation. Now, sensing that the five heroes needed some help, suddenly all the women ran forward screaming and shrieking as women do when they are rushing to some fire sale, armed with knives, sticks, hoes, rocks, stones and whatever they could get their hands on, and casting all fears aside. Upon reaching the creature, they duly proceeded to beat, pummel, chop and stone the hapless creature over and over again until, at last, the creature died.

The five heroes quietly moved to the edge of the field, and sat down to a much needed rest, leaving the villagers to decide what they want to do with the carcass of the evil creature.

"I say we burn this evil creature to ashes," proclaimed a villager.

"Hear, hear ," said another.

"Yes, destroy it forever so that it may never walk on the face of Earth ever again," another villager said, holding up his fist.

With that the village men ran into the forest and collected a huge pile of dried branches and whatever wood they could find. Then they hoisted the dead creature up onto the pyre.

A villager ran up breathlessly and said, "Here, I got the kerosene and matches." He had actually run back to his house nearby and got two gallon containers filled with kerosene.

The villagers poured the kerosene on the carcass and the pile of wood and set it on fire. In a short while the fire raged as though it was also doing its part to destroy the evil creature forever while the villagers milled around, some dancing happily.

"And hey Pak Mustafa, here's your cow, quite unharmed!" someone shouted to him.

Everybody clappe! d. Pak M ustafa was so relieved. He ran over and hugged his cow.

Over at the edge of the field, the five heroes quietly observed the proceedings.

"You guys came just at the right time. We really needed help then," said Ramly to Sawak and Sabha.

"Yup, we may have been goners if you didn't decide to help," said Indra.

"Oh, we definitely will help. We were only worried that we might not be on time," said Sabha.

"Although we live under other skies, our fate is the same," Sawak said philosophically, "we the victims must always be united and help one another from evil creatures that would suck our blood dry."

"I'm so happy today. Come, let's go and have a hearty breakfast, on me," offered Chin.

"We definitely will never refuse such a good offer," chorused the others laughingly.

And arm in arm, shoulder to shoulder, they made their way to Mak Inah's nasi lemak stall.
