Dua graduan UiTM sertai DAP

Judge Najib on his record — Rizal Omar

JAN 21 — While it is the right of everyone to criticise the government, it should not be criticism for the sake of running down the government.

I have been reading some of the articles on Anwar Ibrahim's acquittal and the response to the decision by the Attorney-General to appeal the acquittal.

The High Court judge must have had a good reason to say that he couldn't rely on the DNA evidence. Let us wait for his written judgment instead of writing about his body language and all the other conspiratorial stuff.

If the government really engineered Anwar's acquittal, then shouldn't it reason that it would not appeal the decision.

But in this case, it is appealing the decision and is clearly unhappy with the outcome in the High Court. It is the right of any party to appeal a decision and yet Pakatan Rakyat is going around slamming Datuk Seri Najib Razak and saying that his reforms will not amount to much because his government is appealing a decision that it doesn't agree with.

This is extortion. If Anwar and his lawyers are confident of their case, there is nothing to be afraid of.

Similarly, why shouldn't the Court of Appeal order Karpal Singh to make a defence in the sedition case? Should the courts go easy on individuals who are Pakatan Rakyat politicians?

My point is that let's not tie everything as a conspiracy and criticise everything blindly.

Najib is right. Malaysia is one of the best countries in the world to live in and despite some mistakes along the way, the government has done a good job over the years as has the public service.

Judge the government on its track record and not a whole bunch of conspiracy theories.

Chinese-Indonesians celebrate once-forbidden roots

JAKARTA: A troupe of lion dancers jerk and sway down a busy Jakarta street to usher in the Chinese New Year, moving to the beat of traditional instruments and handing out red envelopes inscribed with good wishes in Chinese characters.

Such a scene would be unthinkable just over a decade ago, when former dictator Suharto ruled Indonesia with an iron hand and disallowed any expression of the Chinese minority's own heritage.

"If you opened a shop with Chinese characters on it, it'd be closed down," said Adrian Yap, 25.

In 1967, two years after a failed coup by the Indonesian Communist Party, Suharto cracked down on Chinese art, music, literature, language and other cultural expressions.

But since the dictator was ousted in 1998, these have flowered again in the world's most populous Muslim nation, where the mostly non-Islamic Chinese minority makes up only a small fraction of its 240 million inhabitants.

In 2003, the Lunar New Year was declared a national holiday and this year — as the nation marks the 10th year of unrestricted celebrations — nearly all of Jakarta's glitzy malls are festooned for the occasion.
Red-and-gold banners with Chinese characters decorate many shopping centres, and Lunar New Year parades are scheduled around the city.

Workers at Jakarta's upscale Plaza Indonesia mall greet shoppers in traditional Chinese clothes as Chinese music wafts from the speakers.

Across the city, passersby are greeted by colourful banners wishing them a happy "Imlek," as the locals call the holiday.

"When I was growing up the celebrations were all hush-hush, said Jevelin Wendiady, a 24-year-old university teacher.

"Everybody knew that during Imlek you would visit relatives at home. But you wouldn't go out to malls like you do now. You'd have no idea it was Imlek, it was like any other day," she said.

"Today when you walk around there is atmosphere, decorations, music. Outside, there are even fireworks at night."

The festive season is not only embraced by Chinese-Indonesians but also by retailers, who look forward to more business.

In the run up to the Lunar New Year newspapers have been filled with hotel and restaurant adverts, offering special new year's packages and deals.

"Every store usually comes up with different schemes, just like during Christmas and Eid al-Fitr holidays," said Fetty Kwartati, spokesperson for Mitra Adi Perkasa, the company that operates such stores as Debenhams, Seibu and SOGO.

"Every festive season, including the Chinese New Year, we boost retail sales," Kwartati said. "But the volumes are not as high as during Eid-al-Fitr," she added.

Rediscovering roots

For Mandarin teacher Fifi Effendi the newfound acceptance of Chinese culture has made it easier for young Chinese-Indonesians to rediscover their roots.

"I had to go to China to learn Mandarin in 1997 when I was in my 30s. I had seen how (badly) Chinese were treated here and I was searching for my identity," the 47-year-old said.

Now, young Chinese-Indonesians have much easier access to their own culture. Mandarin classes and even lessons for traditional Chinese musical instruments are offered as electives at some schools.

"When I started teaching Mandarin in 2000, no one taught it and no one knew how to teach it," she said. "Now, everyone is able to open Mandarin-language centres and the language is in hot demand."

Student Meliani Xu, 21, decided to go to Shanghai to pursue her mother tongue and immerse herself in her lost heritage.

"My parents felt very strongly about Chinese culture," she said, adding that she and her siblings "want to preserve our culture for our children as well."

Xu said she was not alone.

"I met so many Indonesians over there (in China), so it's definitely a growing trend."

Yap said that while he grew up understanding a Chinese dialect he is thankful for the public Chinese New Year celebrations, because it is the only time he feels "Chinese."

Fifi Effendi said that non-Chinese have been so impressed by displays of Chinese culture that they now want to emulate it.

"They're attracted to Chinese culture, they say we work hard. They want to know our culture and our language now.

"It makes me happy… We're now part of Indonesia."

On changing horses midstream and the man who can walk on water — Sakmongkol AK47

On changing horses midstream and the man who can walk on water — Sakmongkol AK47

JAN 21 — The prime minister told the people not to change horses midstream. So we asked, don't we change even if the horse is limping and is running on three legs? In endurance races, riders change horses in order to arrive at the destination. Malaysians should be pragmatic when it comes to deciding their future.

Midstream for Barisan Nasional and Umno is already over 50 years. Since 1955, when the first elections took place until now, from Perikatan to BN, we have had more than 50 years of BN rule. What do we have?

We have development, for sure, but are also damaged by rampant corruption, utter disregard for the rule of law, abuses of all kinds, political manipulations, deception and lies and gross mismanagement of the economy. To all that, the PM says, we don't change? If we don't, we shall have another 50 years of unchecked corruption, emasculation of the judiciary, thugs running the legal institutions, abuses and gross mismanagement.

At another point in his speech, the PM says we don't know whether the opposition knows what to do if they come into power. We don't know whether, under Pakatan Rakyatwe, we can achieve developed status by 2020 with the fabled per capita income of US$ 15,000.

Of course Pakatan knows what to do. In the short years since they came into power, direct investments have been highest in Pakatan led states of Penang, Selangor and Kedah. These states have achieved balanced budgets without doing arithmetic tricks.

In Penang, which is led by a non-Muslim, grants to Islamic religious institutions have reached RM30 million a year. Compare that to Negri Sembilan, which is led by a good Muslim, where the grant is only RM 12 million a year. How is that possible? Because the state coffers have been managed better in one state than in the other managed by BN and Umno.

So, in answer to the PM's pained exhortations, we should change horses if and when necessary. It's now most necessary to change the tired horse. Retire him. But as a good animal lover, we won't put it to sleep, but maybe employ it as a riding horse for children.

The other piece of news that struck me as odd was the statement from Khazanah Nasional that it didn't make a profit from its sale of Proton shares to DRB-Hicom. If no profits were made, why sell the shares? You mean, a simple bottom-line judgement call require a phalanx of Oxbridge analysts to justify in order to sell at a profit?

Secondly, Khazanah's statement can be construed as an admission that it was given a fait acompli, take-this-and-don't-ask-any-questions offer. In Malaysia, only one person can do that – the man who can walk on water.

I hope I can throw more light on the sale of Proton shares to DRB-Hicom. Were there any other bids besides DRB-Hicom's that were presented to Khazanah? Is Khazanah brave enough to publish the identity of all bidders?

If it has the courage to do so, we shall not be surprised if the bidders were only the Tengku Mahaleel- Arumugam group, DRB-Hicom, plus Nadzmi Salleh and Co.

If that is the case, whoever gets the shares has only one master. The man who can walk on water. — sakmongkol.blogspot.com

Will Lajim’s exit hurt Musa?

Sabah's 25 parliamentary and 60 state seats have remained Umno's 'most trusted fixed deposit". In the 13th general election, with uncertainty looming over peninsular politics, Sabah must be won and local Umno 'warlords' cannot be simply dismissed because 'their too old".

A case in point is Lajim Ukin, an influential warlord or 'strongman' as some call him from Beuafort. He's a humble man and well liked in his constituency and unfortunately for some factions a 'winnable' candidate.

Coffeeshops here are abuzz with rumours that Lajim may announce his exit from Umno later this month.

"Wait till Jan 31… The tree will not shake if there is no wind," said one of Lajim's acquaintances when asked of his 'boss' will leave Umno for Sabah Peoples Front (SPF), a local party currently headed by Berman Angkap.

The acquaintance also also reinforced that Lajim's main reason for leaving is because he "knew" that he was among several veterans who were considered 'under-performers" and  most likely would be dropped by Sabah Umno head, Musa Aman in preparation of the coming general election.

Musa is said to be responding to a call by Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is Umno's president, to identify those who should be dropped and replaced by younger and more educated candidates.

While it is true that Lajim is now a veteran politician having served as people's representative since 1985, it cannot be said that he has been underperforming.

He is among the most popular Barisan Nasional MPs and is in touch with his constituency  in Beuafort. He is amiable and easily approachable to people seeking his hand.

According to an insider, the problem lies in the fact that "populist Lajim" is indeed a winnable candidate" at least in his own Beaufort area.

"He is humble and close to the people in Beaufort. He works tirelessly and that's threatening to some quarters who are instigating Musa, " said the insider who also spouted common rumour that Musa is contemplating replacing Lajim with a relative.

Musa's family ties

Currently Musa's younger brother, Anifah, who is also the Foreign Affairs Minister, is the MP for Kimanis, just adjacent to Lajim's Beaufort.

Already, Musa's son in-law Ariffin Arif is the assemblyman for Membakut which comes under Beaufort.

While Lajim has been successful in evading speaking to the media about the rumour of his quitting Umno, his men readily admitted that they already ordered thousands of SPF flags, printed thousands of t-shirts and opening a big office somewhere here.

A senior Sabah Umno, when approached for comment, said the press should ask Lajim when he will announce his exit.

"Rumour are that he will wait until after Chinese New Year to announce his move. We will wait and see lah," said the insider.

Musa's principal political secretary, Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, when asked about the  rumours recently, answered in text: "We have asked the persons concerned but they denied".

Nizam's 'they' refered to  Ghapur Salleh (MP Kalabakan) and Bung Mokhtar Raden (MP Kinabatangan) and Lajim.

All three are on Musa's 'drop list' and rumoured to be heading for SPF.

Yesterday Musa, in a  bid to counter these rumours, called on BN leaders not to dwell too much on the issue of candidacy.

Musa under Najib scrutiny

Musa himself, some insiders claimed, is already a subject of stringent auditing by Najib and his team as to whether he should continue to be the Chief Minister or not after the general election.

There are speculations that Najib could have asked Musa (as he did to Sarawak Chief Minsiter Taib Mahmud) to step down early and pave the way for a transitional state government as the "general election will not be held very soon".

Despite PAS's 'confident prediction' that polls will be held in March, Musa insiders claim Najib had insinuated that there will be no polls this year.

Not to be muscled out this way,  billionaire Musa has leveraged his position by going the extra kilometre and "contributing" to oil the Barisan Nasional's election machinery in its embattled base in Peninsular .

Meanwhile waiting in the wing for the coveted Chef Minister post are Sabah Umno's deputy head, Salleh Said Keruak, who is also State Assembly Speaker, and Shafei Apdal, Umno's vice president who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister.

Both, however, are currently not an assemblyman – a prerequisite to be considered for state cabinet posts.

Things would however get clearer when election is called.

While Salleh and Shafei may harbour hopes of standing in a state constituency, Lajim for now is said to be weighing his options in the event he is not renominated.

Lajim, a thorn to Musa

The threat is if Lajim quits Umno and forms an alliance with STAR' Sabah chapter Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, together they might spring surprises in many seats, especially in Sabah's west-coast area where Kitingan's Kadazandusun communities are substantial.

Lajim, himself being a Bisaya, is from the Dusunic group.

Could the political saying "there is no permanent enemy or friend in politics" ring true for Kitingan and Lajim?

According to their respective inner circles, both leaders have been in contact with each other over politics since as early last year.

Berman, when asked yesterday about Lajim joining SPF,  refused to comment.

All he said in his text message was, "no idea, tq", further fueling speculations that Musa may see more that one surprise spring in coming months.

Let Malaysian Chinese unite as one Dragon and together with other Malaysians, effect a change of power in Putrajaya in 13GE

With the closer approach of the 13th General Elections, whatever the date decided by the Prime Minister to dissolve Parliament, one common aspiration uniting Malaysians is gathering momentum – the possibility and potential for change of power at the federal level for the first time in the nation's 54 year history.

Let Malaysian Chinese unite as one Dragon in the Year of the Dragon and, together with other Malaysians, effect a change of power in Putrajaya in the 13th General Elections to fulfill Malaysia's potential as an united, harmonious, democratic, just, prosperous and competitive nation.

In his pre-Chinese New Year walk-about in the Federal Territory on Friday, Datuk Seri Najib Razak claimed that Malaysia is the best place in the world to live in as it provided the "best value for money".

This is the strongest reason why Malaysia needs a change of federal power because the powers-of-the-day in UMNO and Barisan Nasional suffer from an incorrigible disease of denial complex in refusing the admit the failures of government and nation-building in the past few decades which have driven some two million of the best and brightest Malaysians to foreign lands for they could not get respect and recognition or able to hold their heads high as Malaysian citizens in their own homeland.

If more evidence is needed to prove how cut-off the Barisan Nasional leadership has become from the aspirations of ordinary Malaysians, one need only refer to the message by the MCA President yesterday calling on the Chinese voters not to "experiment" in the next general elections as Barisan Nasional's (BN) leadership has allowed the community to prosper.

Just as the Malaysian economy has developed in the past few decades despite the misgovernance, corruption and abuses of power of the UMNO/BN leadership, the prosperity of the Chinese community had been achieved despite the failings of the Barisan Nasional leadership.

There is nothing that the Malaysian people need thank the UMNO and Barisan Nasional leadership for as it is the reverse – Malaysians are entitled to blame the UMNO/BN leadership for the lost opportunities of Malaysia becoming a more developed, prosperous and competitive economy and a more united and harmonious nation because of its failures of leadership and governance.

This is why a total change of power in Putrajaya is uppermost in the minds of more and more Malaysians and I call on the Malaysian Chinese to unite and rise as one dragon, together with all other Malaysians, to effect a change of power in Putrajaya in the next general elections to begin a new page of history celebrating the greatness of all Malaysians.

At crossroads

FreeMalaysiaToday reported Hatta Ramli as saying that, based on insider info from UMNO people, polling for the 13th GE will be held on 11th March, 2012.

I got this same information before Christmas.

Polling on 11th March.

Parliament to be dissolved on 17th February.

It would appear that the indelible ink will be a given the next elections.

1 out of 7 of the Bersih 2.0 demands.

Clean up of the electoral roll by MIMOS?

If you people believe this, you deserve to have UMNO / BN for another 50 years!

The postal vote is not going to be reformed.

Malaysian overseas voters are again going to be disenfranchised.

As will the several hundred thousand Sabahans and Sarawakians working here in Malaya, who cannot afford to fly home to vote.

The mainstream media will go into overdrive to spin the lies and poison the minds of the kampung folk.

You think the 13th GE, if held as is rumoured now, will be free and fair?

Would you, if you were UMNO, level the playing field?

I recall reading somewhere in cyberspace that the 13th GE will be the dirtiest by far.

I think so too.

Bersih 2.0 has, at a recent press conference, launched an initiative to get 100% voter attendance at the next elections.

Can that ever happen?

Is it possible to get enough voters out on polling day to neutralise the wholesale cheating by UMNO / BN?

Or is that wishful thinking, deluding ourselves that we could still beat them even as they rig the entire electoral process?

Bersih 2.0 has also recently intimated that if there are no adequate reforms to the electoral process, another rally before the polls may be on the cards.

On 5th November, last year, I joined several others to issue a warning to Najib : call for elections without the fullest reforms to ensure a free and fair election, and we would be on the streets again, this time now in a 3 hour rally, but to bring down his regime. FMT has the story here.

I've said this subsequently and I will say it again now.

This was no idle threat.

I am not prepared to be cheated at another general election.

I would rather take my chances on the streets than delude myself at a tainted poll.

What about you?

Najib beri 3 bulan kaji SBPA

KUANTAN: Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak hari ini berkata jawatankuasa khas yang dipengerusikan Tan Sri Ismail Adam diberikan tempoh tiga bulan bagi membuat kajian dan penambahbaikan pelaksanaan Skim Saraan Baru Perkhidmatan Awam (SBPA).

Perdana Menteri berkata skim baru berkenaan mestilah mendapat kepuasan semua pihak sebelum dilaksanakan.

‘We can no longer compromise on oil’

KOTA KINABALU: The Jeffrey Kitingan-led State Reform Party (Star) chapter in Sabah wants the licensing of the oil and gas industry in Sabah to be left in state hands. Currently licensing is under federal control.

This is among several points listed in the party's 'Petroleum Masterplan' which was unveiled here yesterday.

According to Kitingan the "rights of Sabah and the welfare of the people can no longer be compromised by the continued exploitation of its oil resources at the expense of the people of  Sabah."

"We cannot rely on and cannot depend on outsiders to decide on Sabah's oil and gas resources which belong to all Sabahans."

Kitingan said the masterplan was conceived based on the rationale that "Sabah Oil and Gas Resources Belongs to All Sabahans".

The masterplan, he said also included a review of the cash royalty payment from the current 5% to 50%, establishment of PetroSabah Corporation and the PetroSabah Wealth Fund and a Sabah Petroleum Advisory Council.

Explaining further, he said the Sabah Petroleum Advisory Council will advise on and oversee the planning and policies for Sabah's oil and gas resources, while PetroSabah Corporation will spearhead the development of the oil and gas industry in Sabah.

"Getting only 5% from its oil resources is no longer acceptable today. If this continues, Sabah will continue to remain as the poorest state in Malaysia.

"The masterplan will involve a three-pronged strategy that will seek a review of the existing arrangements on Sabah's oil and gas resources.

"It will also look at the overall development of a oil and gas industry in Sabah and the utilization of the oil and gas resources for Sabah and Sabahans first and the preservation and investment of the oil revenue for the well-being of Sabahans and for the future generations," Kitingan explained.

He promised that under such a plan, Sabahans will enjoy cheaper petrol, diesel and gas products, lower electricity rates and enjoy annual grants from revenues generated from the state's oil and gas.

Review of Kimanis-Bintulu pipeline

He said Star also porposed that special tax incentives be given to oil and gas-powered plants in Sabah and that the federal government give PetroSabah Corporation tax-exempt status.

Kitingan said the master plan also recognized the fact that oil and gas are fast depleting resources and will be exhausted in future despite recent announcements of new oil and gas finds off the coast of Sabah.

"Bearing this in mind, the third strategy of the master plan will be seek to invest some of the oil and gas revenues and at the same time to provide for the benefit and well-being of Sabahans.

"The oil and gas revenues need to be conserved and invested for the future of Sabah and all Sabahans and cannot be wholly used in the annual state budget as currently practiced by the government," he said.

He added that a "PetroSabah Wealth Fund" will also be established under the master plan.

The fund will be entrusted to invest Sabah's oil and gas revenues for the future generations. The investment guidelines and criteria will be formulated by the Advisory Council.

"It is proposed that 12.5% of the annual profits of PetroSabah Corporation be set aside to provide for Sabahans and another 25% will be invested in the PetroSabah Wealth Fund," he proposed.

Kitingan did not leave out the controversial RM3.5billion Kimanis-Bintulu Gas pipeline project.

The pipeline will channel gas from Sabah to Sarawak leaving little for Sabah. Kitingan also noted that Blocks L&M have been signed away by the federal government to Brunei and that little was known of the oil dealings over Labuan, which was once part of Sabah and is now a Federal Territory.

Petronas must be accountable

Kitingan said the master plan will also review the pipeline project and assurances given by Petronas and the federal government inclusive of the guarantee to leave sufficient gas for Sabah's use and review of sales tax revenue on oil and gas products in Sabah.

The proposal also includes a request to the Federal Government for a special subsidy for petroleum products equivalent to the volume of oil extracted from Sabah for consumers in Sabah.

"Sabah consumers should pay less for petrol, diesel and gas products compared to their counterparts in Semenanjung," said Kitingan who noted that following the 1976 air crash tragedy which killed then Chief Minister Fuad Stephens and several senior members of the cabinet, the state government had signed away 100% of the state's oil and gas resources.

It even gave up the collection of its 5% oil royalties and accepted a cash payment under the Petroleum Development Act, 1974.

"If Sabah had not waived collecting the 5% oil royalties, today, Sabah will be receiving at least 10% of the revenue from its oil resources, 5% oil royalties and 5% cash payment," he said.

He noted that in 2012, Petronas is expected to receive RM14.734 billion from Sabah oil resources while Sabah will receive only RM0.775 billion and none is specifically invested for future generations.

"The present day system of secrecy, non-transparency and non-accountability will be abolished.

"Petronas will have to be accountable to the people of Sabah for Sabah's oil and gas resources," said Kitingan.

Robbed and beaten up by drunk cop

PETALING JAYA: A 44 year man today related how he was beaten up and robbed by a police man  last night.

Speaking to FMT shortly after a press conference with Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng of the DAP in Rawang, he related his bad experience.

"Last night, at 9 pm a drunk policeman by the name of Mansur started scolding and beating me," said Khoo Gin Seong who was gambling at a restaurant in Bukit Sentosa, Hulu Selangor.

Khoo said he recognised Mansur as a policeman who he claimed frequently got drunk in that restaurant.

He said he was then taken to the Bukit Sentosa police station.

"They took  RM1,000 from me and a group of policemen started beating me. They also threatened to lock me behind bars if I don't give up my money.

"After that I was beaten up until my dentures broke and my body was in pain," said Khoo.

At this point, Lim told FMT that Khoo returned home at 11 pm and later lodged a report at 4.30 am at the same police station.

"The front desk personnel in the police station were initially reluctant to accept the report."

Lim claimed the investigating officer for the case urged Khoo to settle the case at 9 am.

"Khoo declined and informed him that he had alerted the DAP of his predicament," said Lim.

"Don't try to charge this innocent man for obstructing police work," he said because the police, according to him, had a tendency to charge the public for alleged obstruction.

"Don't play tricks because I have witnesses," said Lim who said that several patrons in the restaurant had witnessed the entire incident.

Dear Najib, are you ready to die for your country?

I am.

It's rumoured that you will move the Agong to dissolve parliament on 17th February and that the Election Commission, acting upon your instructions, will fix 11th March as polling day.

Yes?

You want to take the nation to its 13th GE without giving us the full electoral reforms we demanded on 9th July, last year?

Yes?

I'll see you on the streets.

And God will be with the righteous.

‘Anwar, Azmin, Kak Wan tetap musuh saya’

Bagaimanapun Azmin mendapat sokongan kuat Anwar, kata Ezam.

Keluarga Anwar

Gerakan’s New Year wish for Pakatan Rakyat

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Gerakan has a strange Chinese New Year wish for Pakatan Rakyat. They hope that Pakatan settle all their internal differences.

Penang Gerakan committee member Wong Mun Hoe said Gerakan has been listening on the sidelines for a long time the complaints from PKR and PAS members about the state is run.

The complaints are not from Barisan Nasional (BN), Wong stressed.

There are claims that some state leaders are dictatorial when discharging duties, to an extend they "ruffled the feathers" of some in the state civil service, fellow Pakatan members including state assemblymen as well as city councillors, Wong said in an interview.

He believes that Pakatan leaders are waiting to speak up stumbling to speak up buyt they are afraid their  differences may erode public support for their alliance.

"It is normal for any party to have differences. What makes them better, is their willingness to resolve it. This shows a streak of strong leadership qualities instead of sweeping things under the carpet or issuing gag orders."

Wong hopes the voters here would realise the hiccups in the state government, and vote in a credible opposition to ensure a check and balance occurs in the system of governance.

"It is acceptable to give the benefit of doubt to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who is seen to be transparent and enjoys a cult-like hero status. But at the same time, the people should vote in an opposition which ensures the entire state government does not misbehave."

Penang does not revolves around Lim alone, there are many elements which holds a state administration together, Wong said.

Pakatan has 29 out of the 40 state seats here.

Dr Chua’s soiled views — Tan Teck Huat

JAN 21 — I salute The Malaysian Insider and other news websites for giving space to politicians from all parties and differing views.

I suppose it is because of this commitment that you have given space to MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek to spin his stories and give his two sen's worth on the National Feedlot Corporation controversy.

Unfortunately, there is little context in that interview and first time readers of this scandal will come away thinking that Dr Chua is saying something reasonable.

Well, his views are anything but reasonable. He says that Barisan Nasional (BN) and Shahrizat Jalil mishandled the issue. Mishandled? This sounds like some spinning to me.

When taxpayers' funds are abused in such wanton fashion, it is not spinning. It is a tragedy that till today, more than three months after the Auditor-General highlighted problems with the project, the prime minister and his band of ministers and component party heads are still accusing the opposition of making a mountain out of a molehill, and speaking about the criminal breach of trust as an administrative problem.

And now that the BN has realised that this scandal has really upset Malaysians and become the symbol of what Umno and BN is, there is a rush by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and a sudden move to appoint an audit team.

Dr Chua, you don't get it. Malaysians are not stupid, nor are we spineless. We don't need to wait for a green light from the boss before we address an issue.

It is astounding that there is NOT ONE leader in Umno or BN who has called the NFC scandal as it is.

Please don't even mention "Ah Jib Gor". The man is so consumed by his own image and branding and survival that he brings to mind the Italian cruise ship captain who looked out for himself when his ship ran aground.

So, Dr Chua, you are entitled to call the NFC mishandled and I am happy that you do so because it shows how detached the MCA is from the public view.

* Tan Teck Huat reads The Malaysian Insider.

* This is the personal opinion of the writer or publication. The Malaysian Insider does not endorse the view unless specified.

BR1M is not the right economic solutions for the people

This is the problem with a government which has no clear strategic plan for poverty eradication, neither a clear plan for economic development of the state. We may have failed to notice that all these years the villagers had actually been mostly left out to fend for themselves in the villages.

DANIEL JOHN JAMBUN

I feel it is rather amusing to read so many leaders calling for us not to politicize the RM500 BR1M handouts, some even going to the extend of warning people not to link it to any political motive, because the handouts are "the government's sincere way of trying to assist the people in today's difficult economic climate." But the problem is, after so many BN leaders make this warning, we can't help thinking this must be very political indeed! It is quite clear that their intention to warn us not to politicize the matter is their way of telling us that it is all actually political. Ironically, by warning us not to politicize the matter, they are the ones ending up politicizing it!

Or is it being done on purpose? It is a very subtle and clever way of telling us it is in fact all very political. After all it is hard for the government to be generous and not be appreciated, especially because the total amount to be disbursed is so huge it can sink a ship. But as Datuk Wences Anggang of UPKO confirmed it, it is very political with some 'unnecessary' questions being put on the application form, such as where does the applicant vote and if he or she is a registered voter.

The other day someone said that you can confirm whether your name is in the approved receivers' list by checking the list at the UMNO or PBS offices! My immediate reaction was what does UMNO and PBS have anything to do with it if it is not political? Are UMNO and PBS taking advantage of getting support by also becoming a checking centres other than the district offices?

Of course we are thankful for these handouts. At least the people are now in a state of excitement about getting some real cash to help them overcome many difficulties. But many deserving people are not qualified to receive them, while many who make more than RM3,000 per month end up getting them. And what I am afraid is that a lot of the amounts received will be abused, with many re! cipients going for the quick fixes with "tiga sepuluh, aramai it is." The government, eventually had decided to continue spoiling the people by directly giving them fish, as if all the efforts to teach them how to fish had failed. But then again BR1M is not a surprise if we remember that the government has been practicing this method of "helping the people" all the time – giving them house building materials, water tanks, food items such as rice and other forms of groceries. At one time this was called the government's way of reducing poverty – give them some food items and they are not longer poor for a few days! How very creative! In the case of fishermen, they are given allowances of RM200 per month, and are allowed subsidized diesel, which is welcomed, but is it the best solution to their problems? The MP for Papar, Datuk Rosnah Shirlin on January 18, during the ceremony to roll out the allowances, said that hundreds of fishermen from Papar "will have fewer worries of not having enough to makes ends meet." Does it mean the fishermen can't even make RM200 per month to feed their families? If that's the case, shouldn't the government be helping them to switch to other economic activities?

This is the problem with a government which has no clear strategic plan for poverty eradication, neither a clear plan for economic development of the state. We may have failed to notice that all these years the villagers had actually been mostly left out to fend for themselves in the villages. They go on with their traditional way of life without any new way of increasing their income, to such an extent that when the YBs come bringing in handouts they grab at it all with a lot of gusto. And then they are insulted with speeches asking them to be thankful to the government!

But these acts of giving plain handouts, which have now become a political tradition in Sabah, is in many ways an admittance and proof of failure of the government to develop the peopl! e after half a century of independence. By now, the system of roads should have been developed to give access to all farmers to send their goods to the towns and cities, and the villages should have long become centres of food production where farmers are involved in planned farming methods and are active in small village industries. The government should have placed various systems to purchase and transport these goods for processing and export and thus give the people consistent incomes. Such a system, if properly put in place, should have solved part of the problem the high import of food into Sabah, which is a staggering, and frightening, 70% of our needs!

The government can use intensive food production as an effective means to solve poverty with the intensive production and distribution mechanisms efficiently in place. The people needs to be guided and assisted to move out of their traditional backyard farming which is of non-commercial scale, to one that is of commercial-scale and targeted for factory and downstream processing.

But I guess the government is in no mood for these measures at a time when the GE13 is just around the corner. All those strategic planning can be discussed another day. The BR1M, therefore, becomes the quick political fix at a time when the election fever is already here. It shall run its course in the hope that it will influence the voting trend of the voters. And all the while the warning not to politicise it will continue.

Several congested spots on North-South highway

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic heading out of the city has slowed down as people have started leaving for their hometowns for Chinese New Year, which falls on the coming Monday.

A PLUSline spokesman contacted here today, said there was a build up of vehicles at several locations on the North-South Highway in both directions.

Among the stretches affected were Nilai to Seremban, Kota Damansara to Bukit Lanjan, Sungai Buloh to Bukit Tagar, and the north bound Tanjung Malim rest area.

"Traffic is slow from Jawi to Bukit Tambun due to an accident near the Bukit Tambun toll plaza and south bound traffic is congested but still smooth on the Second Link highway towards Johor Bahru," he added.

Plus has advised motorists using the highway to plan their journeys well to reduce the risk of congestion and accidents this festive season.

Laksamana Arjuna

Laksamana Arjuna mengahwini Pooja, bukan?"

"Jadi, apa nasib Draupadi?" Seseorang bertanya beberapa minit selepas itu; mungkin kerana tidak mampu menanggung perasaan ingin tahu.

Vrihanala tersenyum pahit sambil merenung kejauhan.

Kemudian muncul wajah tampan Laksamana Arjuna.

Kemudian muncul wajah tampan Laksamana Arjuna.

Can Bersih clean-up EC?

At this point in time, ground and grassroots reports indicate that Pakatan Rakyat can do better than in the previous general election. The reports indicate that Pakatan can maintain Kedah, Kelantan, Penang and Selangor, capture Perak and Negeri Sembilan besides making further in-roads into Perlis, Terengganu, Pahang, Malacca, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak.

As for KL-Federal Territory, indications are that the status quo remains with only the seats of Setiawangsa, Putrajaya and Labuan still eluding Pakatan's grasp.

However, all these are merely ground reports. But the actual situation after the votes are counted may produce totally different results. And this due to none other than the ever-powerful spoiler, the Election Commission (EC).

Although the use of indelible ink can prevent multiple-voting, the crux of the matter is that there are still many areas where the EC can manipulate to assist Barisan Nasional in maintaining power. Chief among these is postal voting or advance voting or whatever terminology it is called.

Recently, retired Brigadier-General Abdul Hadi Abdul Khatab who has served 30 years in the Royal Malaysian Air Force informed PAS that the BN federal government must be pressured to abolish postal voting in the coming 13th General Election. If not, then the postal voting must be conducted outside the military camps so that polling agents from both sides of the divide can monitor the voting. From the dawn of time till the current practice, postal voting is conducted inside the military camps and anything can happen as the Opposition's polling agents are not allowed inside the camps.

Bersih must take heed of this retired Air Force man's suggestion because postal voting is prone to manipulation and postal voting is the deciding power because it has rescued BN's candidates in many cliffhanger vote-counts, for instance the victory of Rembau MP, Umno's Khairy Jamaluddin against PKR's Chegu Bard in the previous general election. During our school days we talked about being saved by the bell but in the case of BN it is being saved by the post.

Last year, four retired army personnel revealed to PAS that they have voted on behalf of their colleagues. This news was put up on PAS' Harakah's website. One of the retired servicemen even said that his fingers were numbed due to voting on thousands of ballots.

There certainly needs to be more transparency on this postal voting.

Felda settlers' vote

Another problem that needs to be overcome by Bersih is the vote of the Felda settlers who are ferried to the polling centres by BN using government machinery. On the way towards the polling centres, these settlers are coerced into voting for BN, otherwise they will be denied Felda benefits and treated as outcasts in their community. This situation happened openly in the Galas and Tenang by-elections in 2010 and 2011 respectively and yet the EC did not act to penalise BN for using government machinery in the wrong manner.

Clearly it is not wrong to announce that EC is a subsidiary of BN and therefore has abused the trust of the public due to its lack of impartiality.

Another problem-prone area is the mainstream media which BN has abused to make use as a propaganda campaign tool. As usual, the EC is blind to such abuses.

As long as the EC is still in BN's grasp, the EC will continue to help BN to win as they have done so throughout the past and will continue to do so in the future.

The short campaign period of eight days is also a great advantage to BN. EC should set a minimum campaign period of 21 days. In the old days there was once a campaign period of more than a month (42 days). The lengthy campaign duration is a necessity so that the voters in the interiors of Sabah and Sarawak can be reached in order for them to make an informed decision.

The Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) which was formed to look into ways of improving the electoral process is working too slowly. The next Parliament session is in March and it lasts for a month. What will the PSC recommend during this coming Parliament session? So far all the changes are only cosmetic. The only big thing is the use of indelible ink.

Time has come for Bersih 3.0

The time has come for Bersih 3.0 because let us face it: the BN federal government is certainly not going to improve the electoral system as it will mean their downfall from political power. BN is not stupid – they know the stakes and they know that it is only the EC that is hindering Pakatan from winning Putrajaya. BN will never allow EC to capitulate to Bersih's demands for that will mean the end of BN at the ballot box.

Thus it can be seen that BN's survival lies with EC's cunning and ingenuity. Will Bersih act now? Will there be another Bersih Rally in late February or early March? After the votes are counted, it will be too late to do anything. Filing lawsuits after lawsuits will not solve the problem as in the case of the Perak power-grab (the third anniversary is coming up on Feb 5, 2012).

The age old adage "prevention is better than cure" is applicable here. We do not want the case of the stolen election or the stolen government with BN winning the 13th General Election through dubious tactics. Then it will be the case of the "Thieves of Putrajaya".

That is why although ground reports indicate that the Opposition will do better than in 2008, it will not be a surprise if after the votes are counted, Pakatan only manages to retain Penang and Kelantan or nothing at all. Nothing is really amazing in this land of Malaysia Boleh. It is EC that is BN's last line of defence but what a powerful rear guard – it will need all the might of the people to execute a change – indeed we live in interesting times.
