‘Don’t be greedy,’ Jeffrey tells Pakatan

KOTA KINABALU:    Newly-installed State Reform Party (Star)  Sabah chapter chairman Jeffrey Kitingan has warned Pakatan Rakyat today 'not to be greedy' and to focus on their challenges in the peninsular.

He also said  that it would not be of any good to Sabah if  peninsular-based parties are allowed to "dominate and control" Sabah like what Umno is doing.

"Enough is enough. We cannot depend on outsiders to lead us. Let Pakatan Rakyat parties concentrate in Peninsular. They control already four states, why must control Sabah and Sarawak too? Don't be too greedy.

"If they (PR parties), like Umno also want to dominate and control over us, then there is not much difference between them and Umno or Barisan Nasional.

"A takeover by any Malayan-based party will result in us in the same situation under Umno. You can take from me," said the maverick Kitingan who was once jailed for speaking up for Sabah rights during former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's rule.

He was speaking at the launching of the Sabah chapter of the Sarawak-based party at the Hongkod Koisaan hall near hear Friday.

Kitingan, who was a a vice-president of PKR before this, said the time had come for Sabah-based political parties to take charge and responsibility again in the state matters.

During his 50 minutes speech, Kitingan explained the conditions of Sabah and Sarawak in at the onset of Malaysia formation in 1963 and the dashed hope of the people in both the successive governments as well as the current and previous leaders of the two large states.

The Harvard scholar also explained why he finally chose Star instead of other state parties as his vehicle.

Letter to a cow

Open letter to Sharizat. Many senior citizens are outraged by your uncalled for comments about
the RM100 given to them by the Penang state government in appreciation
of their contributions to the development of Penang .

Your comments indicate how uncultured you are, totally unbefitting of
a cabinet minister. You said you are ashamed and offered your
sympathies to Penang 's senior citizens because they are worth -
according to your absurd calculation - less than RM10 a month in the
eyes of the state government.

Can I ask you how much a senior citizen was worth when the BN ruled
Penang ? Absol! utely no thing, Yes Nothing at all.
You went on to say that you thank God that there is a federal
government and a Barisan Nasional government to take care of the
people's welfare without which the poor in Penang will be starving.
Yes, the BN government looked after the people of Penang so well that
on 8 March 2008, they kicked the BN out of Penang !

As a senior citizen, let me tell you this. It is not the money that
matters. It is the thought, the appreciation and the caring attitude
of the state government that senior citizens value most.

Did you say that the BN government looks after the people's welfare?
Let us examine the BN's track record. The NEP has been in existence
for almost 40 years and during this period about 1 trillion! ringgit
was allocated supposedly to help Malays through ASN, ASB and numerous
other government programmes involving many government agencies.

Umnoputras hijacked the NEP and by masquerading as champions of the
Malays siphoned off a sizeable amount of the funds to enrich
themselves, their families and their cronies. These Umnoputras live in
palatial houses and live opulent lifestyles. Look at the posh cars
they and their cronies drive and the designer clothes they wear while
the poor Malays continue to languish in poverty, even after 52 years
of Umno's total dominance in Malaysian politics. How much have these
Umnoputras, their families and cronies invested in high-end properties
overseas? How much of the loot is stashed away in overseas banks?
A Morgan Stanley analyst estimated that between 1984 and 2003, RM360
billion was siphoned off by Umnoputras and their cronies. The
Auditor-General's Report bears ample testimony to the plunder of the
nation's wealth.

After more than 52 years of Merdeka, many kampungs do not have basic
amenities like piped water and electricity while Umnoputras are
wallowing in wealth and luxury. No wonder the income differential in
the Malay community is the highest among all ethnic groups in Asia .

You were defeated in the last elections and came into the cabinet
through the backdoor. We are ashamed of you No wonder Rafidah poured
scorn on you. As minister of Women, Family and Community Development,
you did little to genuinely empower Malaysian women, especially Muslim
women whose problems - marriage, divorce, custody of children,
alimony, property rights etc,etc have remained unresolved. Your
failures in this regard are well documented by women NGOs and Sisters
in Islam.

You had the audacity to offer your sympathies to the senior citizens
of Penang . Let me tell you this:
Shut your face, honey. Guan Eng is making money (for Penang , of
course), unlike you and the rest of umno gang.
My advice to you is this:

Don't open your mouth to make a bloody fool of yourself. Do us a
favour; disappear from the political scene.
.
Stop monkeying around.

BERSIH 2.0: Judge Failed to Uphold Constitutional Rights of Overseas Malaysians

Press Statement: 6 January 2012

BERSIH 2.0: Judge Failed to Uphold Constitutional Rights of Overseas Malaysians

BERSIH 2.0 is deeply disappointed with the decision given by Judge Rohana Yusuf on the application by six overseas Malaysians to register as absent voters.

The judge failed to uphold the constitutional rights of the applicants. With this one decision, the judge has effectively disenfranchised not just the six applicants, but up to approximately 700,000 overseas Malaysians.

Article 119 of the Federal Constitution clearly defines an absent voter as any qualified and registered voter who is not a resident in his or her constituency. It is the duty of the Election Commission (EC) to uphold the democratic rights of all citizen of Malaysia. However, the EC has failed to uphold the right to vote of overseas Malaysians.

BERSIH 2.0 has maintained that reform of absentee voting is of utmost importance in ensuring enfranchisement of all voters. We reiterate our call to the EC to immediately make the necessary arrangements including amendments to the Elections (Registration of Electors) Regulations 2002 to enfranchise all overseas Malaysians.

Salam BERSIH 2.0!

Steering Committee

Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (BERSIH 2.0)

The Steering Committee of BERSIH 2.0 comprises:

The possibilities that could occur on 901...

2012 begins with the end of a sandiwara, where a male political aide who was allegedly sodomized had the time to sip a cup of coffee, with curry puffs, after being vigorously defiled by his aged attacker.

This is in addition to a string of factual controversies such as the aide's ability to not drink, eat, and excrete for two days after the alleged incident, and that semen was 'found' in both orifice – the mouth and the anus.

The test results concluded that three different DNA samples were apparent in the 'found' semen. Despite the samples being left in the open by the officer in-charge. And might I add another alleged affair between the victim and the X-chromosome Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP).

Yes, I'm referring to our Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, who is the forebearer of the injustice of our Malaysia judicial system. The Malaysian public is anxious to know the judgment, which the Kuala Lumpur High Court will deliver on Monday, Jan 9.

Here are some of the possibilities that could occur on Jan 9:

i) Anwar is found guilty (90% probability)

This seems to be the general consensus within the public and I might add that the High Court will put a stay on execution so that Anwar can appeal his case. This would be a win-win scenario for Barisan Nasional and Umno because a 'guilty' verdict migh! t sway t he rural voters into believing the sexual promiscuity of our opposition leader.

It will also be an efficient way to further prolong the case, to exert more stress and pressure on Anwar and to weaken Pakatan Rakyat. BN/Umno might want to deny Anwar from contesting in the upcoming general election by disqualifying him owing to his guilty verdict, thus allegedly creating a leadership vacuum within Pakatan, hoping that such a move might cause the alliance between PKR, DAP, and PAS to disintegrate.

Pakatan has already taken precaution by announcing that a replacement is already in place in case anything happens to Anwar.

ii) Anwar is ordered to jail immediately (50% probability)

This is definitely a conundrum for Umno as its warlords have been debating for months on the pros and cons of jailing Anwar. By putting Anwar to jail, proponents have justified that the alliance within the component parties of Pakatan would be weakened severely as thousands of members in PKR would leave the party.

This then will reinforce the mentality of the rural folks that DAP is infact the leader of Pakatan. This move, to strike fast and hard could face severely negative repercussions for the BN as tens of thousands of people, if not more, would go on the streets to protest the judgment.

If not for the Arab Springs and the global protest phenomenon happening all over the globe – where the will to protest seem not to dissipate even after nearly approaching a one year anniversary – this would have been the most likely option for the Najib administration.

PKR is currently assembling 100,000 members to support Anwar during his v! erdict, as a counter measure to BN. The police had just approved the rally, which would be held in the open car park in front of the High Court.

iii) Anwar is acquitted (< 5%)

BN might hope that by acquitting Anwar, and allowing the prosecution to appeal the judgment, the government might be able to demonstrate the independance and fairness of our judicial system.

The Prime Minister might also hope that this would convince the urban voters that actual change is happening in the political environment and along with the 1Malaysia campaigning, will propel BN/Umno back to recovering its two thirds majority with the support of both rural and urban voters.

This tactic might be seen as a good sell but it creates too many uncertainty for BN/Umno and with the current political landscape, uncertainty is never a good thing.

Anwar has just stated the importance of having a strong opposition and that a simple majority in the government is enough, even if Pakatan comes into power.

iv) The High Court will postpone its judgment (20% probability)

The High Court might just postpone its judgment, citing safety concerns due to the masses of people, seemingly trying to devour the Malaysian courts. Postponing judgments will allow the BN/Umno to observe the political strength of Pakatan.

Regardless of the Jan 9 outcome, I believe the desire for change among Malaysians is not confined to the opposition leader. The people are tired of the economic and political piracy of Barisan National and the Najib-Umno administration.
Pakatan has already shown to be better administrators in Penang, Kedah, Kelantan and Selangor than their BN/Umno counterparts who had more than 54 years to prove their sincerity and worthiness.

Pakatan believes in freedom and equality for all. Pakatan believes that Malaysians are able and talented, who can stand on their own feet and succeed.

Pakatan believes that Malaysia is the greatest country, and that the current mismanagement and excessive corruption of the ruling BN government is causing our children to leave the homeland unwillingly.

We have asked the police to facilitate the Jan 9 peaceful gathering, a right enshrined in our Federal Constitution, and we welcome our opposition to have their assembly, including Umno and Perkasa.

Let 901 be the day of liberty – history is in the making – and the day our people are finally allowed to express their rights as enshrined in our constitution.- Hee Loy Sian

Malaysian politician greatest skill… Talk and Talk!

  • Malaysiakini reported that PM says that the listing of FGV is good for settlers. He said that the settlers are expected to get a windfall. He had to resort to using his fathers name to convince the settlers. He said. "I give you the guarantee – your annual bonus, duit raya, RM40, 000 loan for house renovations and funds for socio-economic projects – will continue.

"As for those who are getting 14-15 percent dividends from Felda Investment Co-operative (KPF) – it hasn't reached its full potential just yet – and therefore we cannot guarantee the dividends in future," What's the problem with this statement? From my understanding, the settlers will continue to get what ever they had been getting i.e. status quo. Therefore where is the big windfall? He cannot even commit to the 14%-15% dividend payout. Therefore what he is saying is that the settlers are expected to get less that what they have been getting. My point then why should they support this restructuring? Clearly what the PM must do is to show explicitly to everyone exactly what is the windfall and when are they going to get it?
  • While Najib made one promise over his father's grave, Anwar made a similar promise that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) will immediately renegotiate all "lopsided" agreements with independent power producers (IPPs) and revamp national land development authority Felda once it is elected into federal power. Immediate renegotiation does not mean immediate resolution of issues. It may take forever and I am sure another set of excuses will come out as time goes. It is not easy to renegotiate something that has been inked without having to compensate any potential lost of profit or revenue. Either way, I see it as a convenient political promise that has a major impact on the nation coffers.
  • While the politician talk and make promises, the ordinary people listen with awe. The promises made are populist promises. It meant nothing other than good to the ears. Many people trust what ever the politician says en verbatim. They listened with their mouth open and clapped relentlessly. Their needs are different from the ordinary people in the street. Why does the people continue to listen and believe this people? In BA I am still waiting for the SSG to respond to my simple dare which I posted a few days ago. So far no news.

Azmin promises peaceful Free Anwar rally

PETALING JAYA: PKR today promised that next Monday's '901 Free Anwar' rally at the Jalan Duta Court Complex will be a peaceful one.

PKR deputy president Azmin Ali said that the Pakatan Rakyat coalition had a track record of having peaceful assemblies, and had no intention of breaking this trend.

"In the past 12 years, PKR, DAP and PAS members have shown a great amount of discipline. There has not been any kind of incident…aside from provocations made by irresponsible parties," he told reporters at PKR's HQ this afternoon.

He was also confident that the rally, which will take place at the court complex parking lot at 7am next Monday, will see "100,000 or more" people attending.

In his assurance that the rally would go on smoothly, Azmin said that PKR was going to use 500 uniformed "marshalls" for crowd control purposes.

"After the verdict is over, we will disperse peacefully," Azmin said.

Monday is the day the High Court will deliver its verdict in the sodomy trial of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Trafic police to help out

Earlier today, PKR leaders including Azmin, vice-president N Surendran, Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin and Director of Strategies Rafizi Ramli met with Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohmad Salleh to discuss Monday's rally.

After about 90 minutes, the police announced that the rally was allowed to proceed, with conditions to be set by the police officer in charge of the district.

Azmin said the police asked PKR to guarantee that the gathering would run without a hitch.

He added that traffic police would be in the area to make sure that there would be no traffic problems.

"Because this is a peaceful assembly, I am confident that there will be no road blocks," he said.

In many previous rallies, including the Bersih gathering last July, police set up roadblocks in various parts of the city to prevent people from participating.

Azmin also said Monday's rally would not have an official colour or dress code. He advised would-be participants to arrive early and park their vehicles at the car park near the Matrade centre.

The PKR deputy president also had a few words about PAS firebrand and Selangor state exco Hasan Ali, who has said he would not attend the rally.

"If Nik Aziz (the Pas spiritual leader) can give his support and assure that he would come for the rally, who is Hasan Ali? Is there a certain agenda?"

"He has gone against Pakatan's principles, and shouldn't have made open and baseless statements. I leave it to PAS to take the necessary action."

Azmin also criticised university authorities for prohibiting their students from attending the rally, saying they were suffering from an "old mental block".

Save-our-market campaign still on

KUALA LUMPUR: A signature campaign to save the Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) market will continue despite official assurances that it will not be demolished any time soon.

"We don't know what will happen after the general election; so the campaign is still on," said Jenny Loo, who chairs the TTDI Traders Association.

The New Straits Times reported today that Kuala Lumpur City Hall had shelved plans to demolish the 25-year-old market, but Loo said traders and their patrons were taking the report with a pinch of salt.

"We wouldn't know for sure," she said. "People have no confidence in the authorities. Even our customers say they don't believe the authorities' assurance. We don't want to be conned."

The signature campaign started last Saturday, during a demonstration staged by the traders and their customers. The traders said they began receiving demolition notices about two months ago, but were not told where the new market would be located.

It has been reported that City Hall plans to build a condominium on the site.

The demonstration prompted Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin to clarify that there was no concrete plan to demolish the market. He said there had been only proposals.

He criticised City Hall for its failure to consult the traders and patrons on the proposals.

Loo said she had a meeting with Raja Nong Chik in Putrajaya yesterday and that he told her the demolition would be put on hold for the time being.

"He also said that since we did not want development, we must not regret our decision in the future," she told FMT.

Raja Petra Kamarudin (RPK) is still the same man

The temperature is lower now after a few days of enlightenment for RPK. RPK is not seeking for popularity, be famous or a materialist. It is you, the people that go after him, believe in him, follow him and to some, worshipping him like an angle. I would say it is leaning more towards a cult like fascination.

I must admit that I did once adore this man, met him once at the 2007 Anti-ISA rally, a nice, gentle and quiet man. I would say that he is still that same kind of person even though his recent interviews may let many people thought otherwise.

RPK is playing a game, a game that only one person can play and he sets his own game plan, rules and regulations while you, the people are the guessing spectators. Each time he played his game the people will start guessing what it is.

Since his unfortunate pressured departure from Malaysia, RPK is no longer aligned to anyone or party but himself. He is a one man show and he plotted his game plan very carefully and he played it well. In a cult like manner, he listen only to himself and play his game, the type to his own liking and when to play it. Since he is outside the boundary he has nothing to lose, he does not care if you are happy or not with him as long as he felt that every game he played he is the winner.

The latest interview with NST is one of his game plan but may have gone off course unexpectedly. Did umno really gain anything from it? Who is umno targeting from this news, the rural or urban folks? I would say none. The urban folks are able to sense what is going on and why umno is so hard press to get this interview. For the rural folks, they are scratching their heads, apa ini? Not long ago they are fed with all sorts of denial of what RPK wro! te, RPK is a fugitive, a wanted man and a liar and today they are praising him. These latest interview added no value to umno and may harm them even more.

The first game RPK lost or is it? There must be a winner and who is the winner if umno and RPK lost? Of course its the rakyat, the voters and to an extend Pakatan Rakyat. Maybe RPK did not lose after all, this may be what he wanted it to be. To arouse the anger of fence sitters and his faithful followers to look deeper and seek the right choice.

Yes, RPK does not like to lose in his own game, that is why you are seeing his latest bombardment against the Selangor Government because he is challenged. He does not care whether what he wrote are the truth or lies, its not in his game book to write the truth all the times.

So do not get over excited when RPK has another pow wow with umno, another time another game. Just follow his game but always lookout for the positive aspect of the game.

Lastly, many are asking, 'is RPK being bought over, a turn-coat'? The answer will be known if anyone knows what has become of Bala lately. RPK has yet to play the latest Bala game, when, no one knows accept RPK himself.

SPAN Dan SYABAS Digesa Tukar Paip Air Usang

`Tiada pembersihan daftar pemilih'

Indian votes will remain a challenge for BN

KUALA LUMPUR: Irrespective of the outcome on Monday when the Kuala Lumpur High Court delivers its verdict on PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, Pakatan Rakyat can be certain of support from its Indian voters.

According to political analyst A Thiruvengadam, whichever way the court decides will make no difference to the Indian opinion of Anwar.

"The verdict will not make a difference to the Indians' opinion of Anwar. The Indian community here strongly believe that our judicial system is dominated by politicians and not fully independent.

"Whether he is found guilty or not, the current Pakatan supporter will continue to give Anwar his vote. In fact there may even be a wave of sympathy for him if he ends up in jail," said Thiruvengadam, a political columnist in the local Tamil daily.

He said Barisan Nasional vis-a-vis MIC will have a tough time convincing loyalist Indians in the coming general election.

"You must understand the Indian thinking. Cases involving politicians like Anwar Ibrahim are seen more as a politically motivated rather than morality problem cases."

"BN is to be blamed for the increasing perception that Anwar is innocent. Just see how the case was handled.

"Several BN ministers have accused Anwar as sodomite, "kaki liwat' even before the judgment and the way of police handle this case since the beginning will also be a reason for a sympathy wave for Anwar and Pakatan," said the former Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) councillor.

'No win situation for BN'

Thiruvengadam added that the bulk of the Indian grassroots community believed that Anwar was innocent and that the sodomy charges was a conspiracy to discredit him.

He said current political environment is far different from the days before 2008 and much of the credit for increased public awareness goes to the alternative media and social networks which were freely publishing details of issues in a way that was easily understood.

"It's a no win situation for BN as far as the Indian voters are concerned. Putting the opposition leader behind the bar will result in a large number of Indian voters voting BN out.

"Acquitting Anwar of the sodomy charges will only confirm to them that the whole trial was politically motivated.

"Either way the 13th GE is going to be a challenge for BN to win over the Indian voters," said Thiruvengadam.

Anwar super confident in takeover of Putrajaya

NONEHaving given a string of interviews this week, one would think that PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim would run out of things to say.

But meeting with Malaysiakini for an interview yesterday, Anwar was chatty and upbeat, hardly betraying the slightest apprehension over the sodomy trial verdict due to be delivered on Monday.

Requesting a cup of coffee from an aide, the 64-year-old lamented about being "a wee bit sleepy" at that time, and went on to add that this was not due to his ongoing nationwide ceramah tour.

Instead, it was his "health freak" son, Ehsan, back from New York to attend his sister's wedding, who was the reason for this - by being a "taskmaster" in pestering Anwar to "lift dumbbells" at "odd hours" of the day.

"This morning, after the subuh prayers... we arrived home around 2am. We then wake up for the dawn prayers, but at 6.30am, Ehsan says, 'Let's go exercise'. I told him, 'No, no, I do that at 8 o'clock'," Anwar said of his little-spoken-about son.

A Master's student in the Big Apple, Ehsan's absence throughout his father's trial has been used as a point of attack by his detractors and this little peek into the duo's relationship could be well-timed by the consummate politician.

The timing of the verdict delivery in the Sodomy II trial also appears to be "favourable" to Anwar and the opposition coalition, with Anwar joking ! that a n umber of coalition leaders and supporters felt that if he was jailed, it would garner more support for Pakatan Rakyat in the coming general election.

Regardless of the outcome of Monday's verdict, the ever optimistic Anwar insists that Pakatan will make considerable gains in the general election, "enough to take over Putrajaya".

States that will fall into the coalition's hands, he said, are Perak and Negri Sembilan, with the BN mounting a formidable challenge to Pakatan's efforts in the southern states of Johor and Malacca.

All the same, Anwar says, Pakatan will take more seats in both states, as well as in Sarawak and Sabah, where "substantial gains" will be made.

In the following excerpt of Malaysiakini's exclusive interview, the Permatang Pauh MP also concedes that incumbency, as well as Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat's age and ailing health, may be a problem for PAS in Kelantan.

The interview has been edited for language and brevity.

Which states will be problematic for Pakatan in the next GE?

They're in the south, Negri Sembilan, Malacca and Johor. More so Malacca and Johor. Johor because we have huge difficulties in getting across.

Not that people don't come. In Muar, 4,000 people came, that's a huge crowd for Muar. But there is an exception. We can't get a place near a town, where people can converge. Like in Ledang, a comfortable crowd but so difficult to get there. We have to work a bit harder.

pkr ! congress 271110 jimmy chua jui mengAre we better off compared to 2008? Certainly. Not just Keadilan, but DAP networking in the urban areas of Johor is much better now. PAS has been penetrating new areas. Keadilan machinery after (Johor PKR chief Dr Chua) Jui Meng took over has managed to really beef up, both in resources and machinery. Far better than in 2008.

Then we have Sabah and Sarawak. Sarawak you have this belt of Chinese majority, penetration into three or four pockets of Dayak group. Can we get a majority of the seats? No. Realistically, we can manage 30 or 40 percent of the seats. Sabah is a different story.

Are you saying you're confident of taking Malacca and Johor?

No, I'm not saying that. Johor will take a lot more effort. Malacca, we'll gain substantially and Negri Sembilan is easier. The mood is good.

Do you think you'll capture Negri Sembilan?

Yes.

Is Penang a solid state for Pakatan?

Yes, solid. Which means we can gain in Penang. That's my point.

The main focus of the Perkasa-Umno types is to abuse and accuse (Penang Chief Minister Lim) Guan Eng. It does not work. I go to Penang a lot. Unlike the other places where I go as a national leader, but when I go to Penang I sit down, go to masjid. There's no impact. Guan Eng, has been successful in that.

The Malays... know he is Chinese, he is DAP. I'm not suggesting they agree with everything he says and DAP policies, but they see him as a credible le! ader.

What about Kedah, Kelantan?

I'm going to Kelantan today (yesterday, Thursday). There are some concerns, and the state government has to address them now. It has to be done now. The water issue. Issue of land in some of the constituencies. I'm going to ask Tok Guru Nik Aziz (Kelantan MB Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat) for advise and how this can be resolved faster.

There is problem of incumbency in Kelantan. (PAS) has been there for too long. Maybe people think it's time for a change?

pakatan ceramah shah alam 041211 nik azizTok Guru Nik Aziz has a certain flair about him. People say he is old, he has been there for some time. (But) he is clean, doesn't cheat us in this society and political system where you have too many scoundrels squandering wealth...

But the people do say he is getting old, so he should be planning (to retire), and the team he presents is important.

I mean, I would share with him some views in private today, because the people would like to see the team that is backing him presented in this general election. It must be seen to be a credible team.

Maybe some people are thinking Nik Aziz should not go on anymore. He's old and ill.

I'm not sure if that sentiment is that strong. I've heard about it. They say we need him at least to make sure the issue of integrity and good governance is there.

He's clean, that's good, but...

Yeah, I know. You need a stronger team to back him up. That's important.

So basically, he'll remain, but push the second liners?

Yes, which is what they're doing now. But if they can handle some issues fast, like the water issue, which is a real issue. I think we have to concede. If they can handle this and land issue, I think it should be okay.

Is there a successor for Tok Guru Nik Aziz who you can work with?

I don't have a problem. Why should I have a problem? The important thing is the successor should be acceptable to the people of Kelantan.

What about Kedah?

It is far better among the Malays and the rural Malays, but there are some concerns with the Chinese over some pronouncements, like the liquor areas, etc. I have discussed this with Ustaz Hadi (PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang) and both of us will discuss with Ustaz Azizan (Kedah MB Azizan Abdul Razak).

penang kedah timber logging azizan abdul razak 310708 03The first reaction has been, 'Okay, back to status quo and we'll look at it.' (Azizan) wants it to be well-regulated. Like here, with (Selangor exco member) Hasan Ali. The point I will concede is that it is okay if it is a Malay village, with 80 percent Malays, we don't need to have a kedai arak. If it is very mixed, majority non-Malay, we shouldn't create problems.

To put lab! els such as 'under 18 years' or 'Muslims cannot buy', is okay to me . But we should not create a situation where new rules, affecting non-Muslims particularly, have to be imposed. Other than these issues, I think we should be fine. Sarawak, Perak we'll do better.

Will you regain Perak?

Yes. All studies, all surveys indicate that.

Back to Kedah. Why do you think issues that seem to concern the Chinese community keep occurring?

PAS is the majority there, so concerns about gambling and liquor will crop up from time to time. I don't believe we can dismiss that. We have to provide the forum for Muslims and the Chinese and Indian communities to sit down and reason out.

It doesn't mean we should just maintain the status quo. If there are ample reasons why liquor cannot be sold at certain localities, I think they will concede. These things can be done.

Is it a case of the PAS government there taking a more hardline stance on these issues?

These are concerns expressed by the grassroots. Of course we have to listen to them, some we have to explain to them. It is not healthy to derail the process.

How are things in Selangor?

Selangor is interesting because the masses, and the business community in particular, has a lot of reservations, and a lot of criticism. Particularly those who have committed 'deeds' in the past. And they they are stuck.

Khalid seems to be adamant to say, 'Look, the agreement must be corrected' and therefore you have these... delays in the process. He has a case too, although I look at it and say, 'Never mind, what to do, they are businessmen, they work with everybody.'

But he says, 'If there is evidence of hanky panky, and they paid millions of ringgit to the former administration, I want to have this corrected.' In that sense, he is more principled. So I think we are adjusting between the two (approaches).

Khalid has a point, so I don't push beyond that. Particularly when there are cases where millions of ringgit have been disbursed and the agreements are lopsided. Taking land just like that. It was a huge problem... a major stumbling block for Khalid. He became very prejudiced in not wanting to go through with the same set of rules.

But having said that, when it comes to work on the ground, you can't fault him. I mean, it's not easy to persuade him to get some of the programmes on the ground because he has been very much a corporate player... but when he agrees to something, that's it.

Like micro-credit. I said: 'Do it fast. Five million ringgit, plus five.' This man, once he was convinced, he said: '50 million, then 70.' Because we can afford it. He was initially very reluctant, for he thought this would be something messy, working on the ground. But I said to the people, it counts... Having said that, it is very difficult for Umno to penetrate the ground.

Would Khalid stay as MB if Pakatan retains Selangor?

Well, it depends. Some feel he should continue to stay. Some feel if we do take Putrajaya we would need his e! xperienc e and expertise in building up and correcting major national institutions.

How will Pakatan fare in Pahang?

I'm quite confident we will get more seats. You know, Umno has huge problems too to explain. You talk about country's deficit, it doesn't register. But talk about cows and condos, zakat money, people stealing shampoo and getting two years in jail, the same as Khir Toyo.

Of course they'll say, leaders are the same. There is always this permissive kind of view that is contrary to the Islamic spirit, which calls for reform, but (the rakyat) is resigned to the fact that it will be the same.

But when we come with issues that affect them directly, I see the people get very enraged. This cow issue is very interesting. You mention this and 'Oh!' but you mention one trillion ringgit in deficit... or even financial outflows...

Pakatan will make these gains in the next GE, regardless of the trial verdict?

Those who feel that Anwar is guilty will think that Anwar is guilty. Those who think he isn't will think he isn't. What the judge says will have no bearing whatsoever on public perception, except for a small group.

(This interview was conducted by Steven Gan, Aidila Razak and Salhan K Ahmad from Malaysiakini).

cheers.
