Najib.. Najib... HENTIKAN LAH PENIPUAN!

TUMBANGKAN UMNO/APCO-BN pada PRU ke-13!!!

Penang excos will declare assets

PRAI: Penang executive councillors will declare their assets by next month the latest, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today.

He said the declarations would be for assets owned before the last general election in 2008 and now.

"We have decided to declare a few months ago. We don't want to wait for the central government.

"I don't want to talk about it (but) we will declare, latest in a month," Lim told a press conference during Penang DAP convention here today.

Previously the state executive council planned to declare its members' assets only after the federal government ministers have done so.

DAP national chairman Karpal Singh told newsmen he would suggest that party parliamentarians too declare their assets in future.

"DAP MPs too shall declare their assets at one point," he said.

‘Soi Lek, jangan hina Islam’

"Tolong jangan campur urusan Islam.

Umno Baru at a crossroads again — Nur Jazlan Mohamed

DEC 10 — The recently concluded Umno General Assembly came and went and offered little in terms of the new manifesto of the party. The public were disappointed with the lack of new policy initiatives. Many Umno delegates who had to sit through many stale and uninspiring speeches were left with little enthusiasm to return to their respective constituencies to rally their fellow members in preparation for the impending 13th General Election soon.

The uninspiring lack of ideas put forward by the members best describes the state of the party at the moment. Umno has the largest base of members and voters of any political party in the country. It is the party that claims to have the most support from the Malay population which is the largest ethnic group and expected to be about sixty per cent of the population by 2020.

But as a party that claims to represent the majority race in the country , it doesn't seem to able to break away from the "Malay under siege mentality" rethoric it has used since the fight for independence to attract support from the public. The party is frozen in time and is paralysed to steer the nation through a more challenging future.

The party has failed to offer new ideas to attract the young Malays to support its idealogy which in recent years has drifted more to the right. The Prime Minister, Dato Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, through the concept of One Malaysia has tried to bring Umno back to the centre space of national politics where race and religious tolerance is at equilibrium.

But his message doesn't seem to resonate with the majority of the delegates and even among his bench of Supreme Council members who may have come to a conclusion that another event of racial and religious strife in the country is the best way to retain Malay power.

The underlying message from many of the speakers at this years General Assembly was that the Malays were under threat from the minority group of non Malays who were trying to grab power and overcome Malay supremacy by defeating Umno and Barisan Nasional. The statements made by many of the delegates had strong racial and religious undertones aimed at the Malay population to alert them to the threat posed by the non Malays especially the Chinese who are determined to take power.

Many of them were not even subtle in communicating their extreme views especially when attacking the DAP , the everlasting bogeyman of Malaysian politics. The DAP were accused of playing racial politics and inciting the Chinese to hate Umno and hence the Malays which interests it protects.

But the speakers failed to mention that it is impossible for the Chinese who represent about a quarter of the country's population to take power in the country without the support of the Malays. None of them offered any explanation on why many Malays shunned Umno and had decided to vote for Pakatan Rakyat in 2008. None of them wanted to admit the weaknesses of Umno that caused a significant number of Malays to choose Pakatan as their preferred government.

None of the speakers and the top leaders of the party bothered to raise the issue of corruption and financial mismanagement which is the main reason for many Malays especially young to reject the party. The silence on the issue was deafening in the light of the revelations from the National Feedlot centre issue which involves a senior leader of the party.

The DAP is in an excellent position to take advantage of the situation. The anti-Chinese message from Umno is driving more and more Chinese voters away from it. If this situation continues , the DAP can expect to win the forty five Chinese majority seats in the country's parliament and claim legitimacy to represent the Chinese community in the country.

The Chinese community may decide to dump MCA and Gerakan for the DAP. The MCA and Gerakan would be history and the Barisan Nasional would consist of Umno and the Sabah and Sarawak coalition partners. Barisan Nasional would lose its legitimacy as the party that represents all the races and religions in the country.

Dato Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak would become the first Prime Minister in history to be elected without a majority of Chinese support. He would have to consider the risks of being the leader of Barisan Nasional and Prime Minister without the support of the majority of the Chinese population.

He may have to consider extending the olive branch to the DAP just as his late father Tun Abd Razak Hussein did to the then opposition Gerakan party in 1970 for the sake of achieving overall national unity. If that happens, will it come at a price that Umno can accept?

Will Umno have to swallow its pride again?

Bisik-bisik mingguan — Awang Selamat

Awang tertanya-tanya apakah motif Nik Aziz mahu bertanding lagi?

Malaysia. — Utusan Online

Umno is at point of no return — Ali Kadir

DEC 11 — There is a tendency to soften the facts that face this country. So when a government official says that Malaysia could be bankrupt if profligate spending is not curbed, he is "corrected" immediately.

And when the World Bank paints a dire situation of the brain drain, the government says no such thing. And when Malaysia drops a few notches down the corruption index, the apologists at Pemandu get to work.

Basically, everyone is downplaying the real situation. In similar vein, the Umno MP Nur Jazlan Mohamed talks about his party being at the crossroads. I have to disagree with his conclusion though I agree with many of the points he raised about his anaemic party.

He noted that there was little substance or enlightenment during the party's assembly and instead of discussing real reasons why Malay support for Umno has dwindled, party delegates were more interested in blaming others.

If someone or an organisation is at the crossroads, the main assumption is that the individual or organisation realises that things cannot go on like business as usual. There is introspection, examination of conscience and honest appraisal of how things are and the way forward.

There has been no such ethos in Umno for more than two decades. The party is about the rich getting richer and power grabbing. To borrow a phrase currently in vogue in Russia, it has become a party of scoundrels and thieves.

The crossroads were passed a long time ago. They were passed during the Mahathir era when joining Umno became a passport to enrich oneself and amass government largesse. They were passed during the Abdullah era when the party president crouched and shrank from the challenge of reforming the country and its institutions in the face of backlash from Umno.

Malaysia has gone even deeper into the backwaters during the Najib years where Umno has adopted and embraced the most right wing voices in the country.

Let's not kid ourselves. Umno is not at the crossroads; it has regressed much further. And that lot we saw at the party assembly don't look capable of doing much, let alone reforming themselves.

Dr M minta Shahrizat berhenti. Yang lain macam mana? — Aspan Alias

Dr M minta Shahrizat berhenti. Yang lain macam mana? — Aspan Alias

Itulah etikanya. Dr Mahathir patut menyeru semua ahli jemaah Kabinet negara berhenti bersama-sama dengan Shahrizat Jalil. Kesemua mereka itu sama sahaja. — aspanaliasnet.blogspot.com

Utusan Meloya scrutinising PAS's candidates...

himpun rally hasan ali speakingPAS today refused to confirm or deny reports that its former Selangor chief Hasan Ali(left) will be dropped as a candidate in the next general election.

Party president Abdul Hadi Awang (right) said the front page report by Mingguan Malaysia, the weekend edition of Utusan Malaysia, was erroneous.

He said that the party has yet to scrutinise the candidates that would be fielded and hinted that it would only be done once polls are called.

"We haven't even looked at the list of candidates," Hadi told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

Mingguan Malaysia reported that the Selangor PAS leadership had "dropped" Hasan as a candidate and the central committee had endorsed the decision.

DAP blamed again

Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that Hasan had failed to secure enough nominations from party branches in order to be considered as a candidate.

This was confirmed by Selangor PAS secretary Saari Sungib. However, the PAS central leadership today refused comment on this.

"The matter does not arise. Even we don't know if we will be fielded as candidates or not," said PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, who was also at the press conference.

The
Mingguan Malaysia report puts the weight of the blame of Hasan's alleged axing on the DAP, an Umno's primary target of late.

"Mingguan Malaysia understands that Hasan's axing as a PAS candidate is linked to allegations which said that the Gombak Setia state assemblyperson is the thorn in the flesh for Selangor PAS and the opposition alliance, particularly DAP," read the report.

The report also retraced several incidents in Selangor that saw Hasan crossing swords with Selangor PAS and DAP, including his tiff with fellow state cabinet member Ronnie Liu over the sale of alcohol in convenience stores.

A single spark starts the prairie fire? — Sakmongkol AK47

DEC 11 — Dengar cerita CEO NFC (suami Sharizat) dpt gaji 100k sebulan, anak sulung (age 31) dpt gaji 45k sebulan, anak kedua (age 27)dpt 35k sebulan, anak ketiga (age 25) dpt 35k sebulan. Jika ini betul, ia sesungguhnya memalukan. Ambil duit rakyat buat bayar gaji besar.

Anak saya pun graduate juga. UPSR, PMR, SPM dapat semua A. Umur 24 tahun. Kerja swasta. Dia pun work hard. Balik kerja paling awal jam 9 malam. Kadang2 sampai 1 pagi. Gaji dia RM2,700/sebulan. Adakah anak saya akan sokong BN/Umno kalau begini keadaannya? Saya dah tahu jawapannya. Umno tak boleh kelentong orang cerdik. Umno is not capable of changing, not with the current leaders.

When more than 50 per cent of our working population is earning less than RM2k/month, tak tahu malu ke mereka-mereka ini. Merompak siang dan malam, 7 hari seminggu. Perompak Ali Baba P. Ramli pun ada cuti hujung minggu.

8 December 2011 15:12

Even if we refuse to admit it, the above is an outpouring of bitterness. Although Umno people will wish it's confined, it's personal anecdotes such as this that strikes fear in Umno. Maybe it's already that single initial spark that has ignited the prairie fire.

Shahrizat Jalil can huff and puff and weave her tales as her mythical namesake did in 1,001 Nights. While she can fool Umno delegates by employing attack as the best form of defence, her actions are only an exercise in futility. For her, the writing is already on the wall. Whatever she does will not extinguish her blackened image.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called for her exit from Umno politics. She's finished. Incidentally, the 1001 Nights contained the story of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves, which the writer of the comment cited.  Perhaps, Ali Baba and the thieves aptly describe what Umno has become.

This kind of anecdotal and very personalised tale of feeling marginalised and alienated reflects the wider bitterness of Malays with Umno. There is nothing that Umno can do about it now.

It's a discredited brand. It's synonymous with pillage and plunder, corruption, arrogance that can only be the result of being far too long in power. It's the manifestation of the political dictum — power corrupts absolutely and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Last year, every big idea thrown up by the Umno president was rejected by Umno delegates. When he spoke about 1 Malaysia, delegates insisted on Malay first, Malaysia second. The deputy Umno president was even forthright in affirming that line of thinking, which is more in common with the Umno ground.

Even as Umno members deny it, there is worrisome disconnect between the Umno president and the rest of his team. When he spoke about his nebulous New Economic Model, delegates spoke about more NEP like policies.

In the end, what has Najib Razak got to defend himself?

He has only the claim that he is the son of Tun Razak, imagining such pedigree is testimony that he won't abandon principles dear to Umno. When a person has nothing else to defend himself with but lays bare his bloodline credentials, it's a sign he is in trouble. No one can deny that biological connection. The similarities end just there, as people are arguing whether he has inherited the leadership talent of the father.

This year, what has Umno got? It didn't encourage delegates speaking about economic achievements. No talk on vision, policies and so forth. No one debated about how Shahrizat got the RM 250 million. No one spoke about the ETP, EPP, GTP and whatever labels the Umno president gave to his string of initiatives. None.

The Umno president pleads for continued mandate from the people as the Malay Agenda has not finished. No one spoke or elaborated about the agenda.

How is it that the agenda can only be achieved through Umno, if at all? No one puts forth convincing arguments telling us why Umno is the only qualified instrument for Malays to achieve their collective agenda.

Najib is confused about the concept that he came up when he took over from Pak Lah, which is the claim that the age of government knows best is over. Yet, by asking the nation to give him the mandate to enable him to continue the agenda, he is reaffirming the exact opposite. The government and the party is the deity and dispenser of what is good to the people.

The 2011 Umno general assembly was an occasion for an orgy of vituperative shouting matches. Umno does nothing but direct themselves to attacking and insulting its political opponents. Umno does two things actually; one, heighten the morbid patriotism and nationalistic urges of Malays. And two, it did what it hasn't done before: speak about Malays' greatest fear — assault on the religion of Islam.

But here is the irony, just as Najib — who last year had nothing to offer but to invoke the name of his father — similarly too this year, Umno hasn't got anything.

Listening to the maddening speeches by Umno delegates, I am reminded of what Arthur Schopenhauer in his Essays and Aphorisms said:

"Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority."

That is what has Umno become: an inferior good. It is a good that decreases in demand as social awareness increases. Malays in rural areas are not exactly insular in their outlook. They read the papers, understand what's written in between the lines. Their children come back and inform parents. Umno can't fool all the people all the time with its scare mongering tactics.

Every speaker comes up before the podium, trying to outdo the previous in terms of bellicosity and vehemence. The spectre of the Yellow Peril is upon us; the Chinese will take away Malay rights, turn Malays into Christians, abolish the monarchy and so forth. It's not going to work because of millions of people are thinking like the person sending in the comment posted above.

People know. They talk among themselves. It has become a huge money making juggernaut. The ones making money are the Umno chieftains, cronies, families. Umno operates a giant Ponzi scheme, not dissimilar to Harry Madoff's multi-level marketing.

It can't defend itself on its track record other than reminding people that Umno has done much for the people and country. That claim sounds hollow because ALL governments in the world carry out programmes and implement policies.

Hosni Mubarak of Egypt did the same thing. Muammar Gaddafi gave Libyans much development and personal help to people. The Tunisian president did much development for Tunisia. Therefore, what Umno did, is not unique in that it is sufficient for people to feel beholden and enslaved by Umno.

I feel sorry for the people who think of the widespread disenchantment with Umno since 2008 and that has been building up as a flash in the pan, and regarded — for self-assuring purposes — as mere protest votes.

This time it's real. Ordinary Malays are disputing Umno's empty claims of fighting for the interest of Malays. And Umno people realise this. This is what Umno fears most, when Malays themselves start disputing what Umno says and does.

The facts are these: the people who are ripping off Malays are the Umno elites. Since Dr Mahathir took over, Umno has evolved into a company doing a gigantic Ponzi scheme. The elite, the Umno chieftains, their families and cronies have been ripping the Malays.

Who threatened the royal houses? Umno did, during the constitutional crisis years. Umno leaders were the ones who proposed to tie up royal members on trees and let the fire ants sting them. Umno was behind the exposure of scandalous behaviour of members of the royal family.

It wasn't the Chinese who so much as besmirched the reputation of Malay rulers. I have said it before: The entrepreneurial Chinese would want to befriend the royalty so that, through the royal houses, they can corner more businesses.

How can a numerically smaller group dominate a larger group? How can DAP convert Muslims to Christianity when the majority of DAP members are themselves not Christians?

The only way Malays lose everything, is the result of the rot in Umno. And Umno, says Dr Mahathir, is rotten to the core. It's rotten as a result of endemic corruption. We now speak of billions and not a few hundred thousand being ripped off.

How does Umno rally Malays into its fraternity? By preying on irrational prejudices, fear and probably some bad personal experience. This is the only way Umno can rally the Malays.

It's a reaction that reflects the fear and paranoia that is enveloping Umno now. It hasn't got any big ideas or visionary elements to bind the beliefs of Malays anymore. So, it's only way out is to sound and represent itself as the uncompromising champion of Malay extremism.

That approach will fail simply because extremism and the patriotism promoted by Umno are seen as measures by leaders to preserve themselves.

"Patriotism in its simplest, clearest and most indubitable signification is nothing else but a means of obtaining for the rulers their ambitions and covetous desires, and for the ruled the abdication of human dignity, reason, conscience, and a slavish enthrallment to those in power."

Leo Tolstoy said that a long time ago. — sakmongkol.blogspot.com

The Government has taken 5.2 million for a very expensive ride.

BR1M; cutting our own flesh to feed ourselves

By Lee Wee Tak at
BN administration latest flagship gadget to retain power, which is estimated to cost tax payers RM2.6 billion for 2.5 million applicants, will do the country more harm than good for the country.

Instead of worshipping this as a blessing from demi-god, first and foremost, it looks like an one-off election gadget, a customary by-election sweetener ("remember Najib's 'you-help-me-I-help-you' classic in Sibu?); only on a wider scale.

In fact, the PA of Koh Tsu Koon, a minister in the prime minister department, informed one of the local Chinese dailys that only offcials from Barisan Nasional can certify applications of this BR1M forms. Any forms carrying a Pakatan representative signature will be rejected

Title of the report: Pakatan Rakyat elected representative are not empowered to certify (BR1M forms), only certifications by Barisan Nasional people's representatives are accepted as effective

If this is really a governmental initiative using tax payers' money to aid the poor, then civi service is suppose to be apolitical. The above effectively confirms this initiative as political campaigning scheme funded by misallocated public funds and misuse of public service machinery, no more, no less.

Question 1 : is this expenditure included in the 2012 budget which already carrying a bigger deficit than the Pakatan akyat's alternative budget and having a very optimistic gowth forecast when all other news around the world is doom and gloom? The potential collapse of EU monetary unionsoft landing of China'seconomy etc?

Question 2 : who is financing this handout? Tax payers, of course. Whatever that the BN administration spend, be it submarines we do not need, KLIA 2 which has huge cost overrun while KLIA is underutilised, wanton abuse of public funds highlighted by the Auditor General's report, it is our money.

Yet, it is the hallmark of Barisan Nasional to remind Malaysians to be grateful for whatever that they are enjoying now.

Why should we, when our own money is used to finance a public relationship campaign? And is BN administration going to continue with this dish out on an annual basis when there is no anticipated forthcoming election?!

Treating voters like beggars is not the mark of a sucessful and responsible government. Democratically elected government should implement policies and administrative structure that help the tax payers and citizens to be financially independent and excel, not rendering them status of beggars and grateful for meagre, 1 time hand out.

Business dynamics and employment opportunities won't grow too much when too many people are kept disempowered and counted on an easy to mine voters deposit. Certainly not the way to create a high income population in our nation.
Is the RM500 a cure all for our cost of living woes, fuelled by corruption, inefficient and stifling public sector? (The drop in our ranking in recent international corruption index says it all).

RM500 would probably lasts a month or two. And to strike the iron while it is still hot, all signs of a GE to be announced within a 2 months window period once the payment mechanism are sorted out and carried out. I heard unconfirmed rumours that February has been considered as the target month for GE.

The wanton expenditure today will come back and haunt us tomorrow.

The Inland Revenue Board will be given higher collection target. Recent tax amendments (section 107C) have given the IRB wide range and undisputable power (even above the judiciary) to hit tax payers with amounts that the IRB thinks fit. Helluvaway to encourage foreign and local investment sentiment.

Come next budget, here would be some more creative measures like imposing service tax on credit cards and hike in service tax on Astro for example, converting temporary teachers' contract of service to contract for service to squeeze basic amenities from them, will be introduced.

And rest assure GST will resurface once GE is over and done with. The amount of tax recovered, while no reduction in income tax rates will make this RM500 handout looks like chicken feed.

The massive handout is a credit to Pakatan Rakyat. Following Penang's measure to ! eradicat e hardcore poverty and Selangor's Mesra Usia Emas, Tawas & Jom Shopping schemess, BN has no choice but to match Pakatan's policies and up the stakes.

Even the forthcoming RM200 book voucher scheme was a 2009 proposal mooted in DAP's alternate 2010 budget.

Anyone remember any BN initiative that provide such open cash handouts? Maybe the road tax rebate as an appeasement in Badawi's administration. That is also a loose change from the petrol rates hike pre-GE12.

The difference between Pakatan schemes and BN schemes is that Pakatan funded their schemes from budget surpluses while BN continue to accumulate massive budget deficits and national debts - drawing out from EPF, banks and insurance companies as well as issuing international bonds.

There is nothing wrong to take back some rebates from taxes paid although the payers and the payees are probably different categories of tax payers but we do not owe any vote buyer any favour. Secrecy of our votes is stated in the election laws and you won't see this handout again until there is another need to ask for favour again.

Joy for 5.2m households

By Minderjeet Kaur and S.K. Thanusha Devi

FROM today, millions of people earning less than RM3,000 a month will be able to apply for the one-off RM500 aid to ease their financial burden.

Some RM2.6 billion will be paid out from the middle of next month. It will benefit some 5.2 million households, or 79.5 per cent of households in the country.

Yesterday, people started collecting the application forms from several places here, well ahead of the official release of the forms today by the Finance Ministry.

A 57-year-old single mother here could not hold back her tears of joy when she collected the two-page form from a community service centre in Lembah Pantai.

"I really need the money to take care of my daughter and granddaughter. I cannot bear to see them suffer," said S. Jayamary.

"Since my husband's death, life has been difficult f! or us. She was babysitting her granddaughter.

Lembah Pantai community service centre special officer Nor Asyikin Jaafar said the response had been overwhelming with more than 1,200 people taking the forms.
Others were also happy.

"All my neighbours were asking each other about this RM500 that we would get. We are so excited," said 28-year-old unemployed Surita Mohd Isa, whose parents run a nasi lemak stall.

She said her sister was "extra happy because they can start back-to-school shopping for her children".

Tabling the 2012 Budget, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced the unprecedented one-off aid to reduce the impact of the increasing cost of living on the low-income group.

Second Minister of Finance Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah had said the forms could be collected at various government agencies, including Inland Revenue Board branches.

He said eligible households included heads of family and single parents or individuals with dependants and senior citizens living alone.

In Kedah, about 400,000 families are eligible to receive the RM500 aid.

Kedah Federal Action Council chairman Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum said the eligible recipients could obtain the forms for the aid at more than 40 centres, prepared by the state IRB, from today.

"Some 400,000 forms will be available at the board's offices and several schools.

"There is no need for anyone to rush for the forms as the deadline to submit them is Jan 9 next year," he said when contacted on the council's preparations to identify those eligible for the aid.

Johari said the council would soon carry out registrations for those eligible for the financial assistance.

The Finance Ministry has also set up a hotline, 1-800-22-500, which is operational between 9am and 5pm on weekdays.

Kelantan Economic Action Council chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed had said two days ago that 1.3 million people, or 85 per cent of the population were eligible for the handout.

He had said the state Federal Development Department would act as the secretariat to distribute the funds.

Teachers I met told me that teaching maths in schools nowadays is their biggest headache. Students simply do not use want to understand the basic nor do they bother to use common sense in their answers. I have seen some of the test papers and counted my blessing I am not a teacher.

The media has once again over-played the excitement of people getting RM500. The Government so-called aid to ease the burden of the people. I am of the opinion that at least 50% of the people applying for the money does not understand that the Government is screwing them big time.

Let me give you one example. A widow by the name of Ah Fah told me that she is happy for once the Government is thinking of the people. So I asked her about her electricity bill. Ah Fah told me that for many years her electricity bill was only RM20-RM22 per month. Since she is alone and only uses 1 light for not more than three hours a day, 1 fan for six hours and her only electrical item is her mini fridge. But then since April, three months after her electricity meter was changed she was billed RM120 per month. When she went to Selborn to complain. She was told her meter was tampered. The problem is, how could her meter be tampered when she is never home in the day and only comes home to sleep. And if it is tampered she was never fined. She has repeatedly complain to Selborn who refused to come and check her new meter and her house to determine the usage of electricity. So I pointed to Ah Fah that she now has to cough out extra RM1,200 per year for electricity. So using common sense and logic the RM500 receive from the government minus from RM1,200 there is still that dangling RM700 remaining. Which mean that the Government give out RM500 and take back RM700. This month there is an extra 1% levy by the Energy Department added to the electricity bill and next year another 6% GST. So is the Government clever or not? Ah Fah then agreed that the Government is cunning and has taken the citizens of this country for a ride.

Yes a very expensive r! ide inde ed!

Peter Chin takes over as SUPP president

KUCHING: Peter Chin Fah Kui, 66, has been announced as the new president of the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) when he won unopposed after his challenger, Wong Soon Koh, boycotted the party election held today.

Chin, who is the Energy, Green Technology and Water minister, said he was thankful to the delegates for giving him their trust to continue to lead the second biggest Barisan Nasional (BN) component party in Sarawak.

"I'm happy with the election today and certainly my task after this will be more challenging to rebuild the strength of the SUPP, and I will also go down on the ground to meet with grassroots leaders," he told reporters, here today.

When asked on the fate of Wong, he said there were still several vacant posts in the Central Working Committee (CWC) and they might be offered to Wong and several of his followers if they were willing to accept.

He said he would personally try to get back to Wong's group which included the Lanang MP Tiong Thai King and the state assemblyman for Simanggang Francis Harden Hollis, Lee Kim Shin (Senadin), Dr Jerip Susil (Bengoh), Ranum Mina (Opar) and Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa (Engkilili) to ensure that they remained loyal to SUPP.

He said the new CC line-up announced today was also important to continue the implementation of the transformation plan in the party as outlined previously.

"What is most important is to ensure that the SUPP remains in the BN to further strengthen the coalition at the state and national levels," he said.

Chin will be replacing long time president George Chan who had agreed to step down to take responsibility for the party's disastrous performance in the April state polls.

Meanwhile, his deputy, Richard Riot said that his election in the party was an honour for the non-bumiputera members in the SUPP.

He said it was a new milestone for the party and certainly the focus now was to assist the president to resolve any internal problem and to prepare the party to face the 13th general election.

"To me, the party's internal problem should be resolved within the party and boycotting is not the best way to resolve any problem," he said.

Bar postal voters from voting in Sarawak

KUCHING:  The opposition in Sarawak wants the 20,180 postal voters in Sarawak, comprising mostly security personnel from Peninsular Malaysia, barred from voting in the state in the coming general election.

The party is of the view that such voters should not decide the future destiny of Sarawak.

"A fair election system should ensure that the fate of a country be determined by her own people.

"Similarly, the future destiny of Sarawak should be determined by those who are intimately connected to Sarawak and not by those who come from outside Sarawak state," said state party chairman Wong Ho Leng.

This was one of the recommendations submitted by DAP to the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) which met in Kuching last week to seek views of various people including political parties with regard to electoral reforms to be introduced by the government before the next general election.

Wong, who is the MP for Sibu said: "According to Parliament answer, as at June 30, 2011, there are 20,180 postal voters in Sarawak.

"We believe that the bulk of these are from the armed forces and police, and most of them are stationed in P.195 Bandar Kuching (2,142), P.196 Stampin (4,147), P.197 Kota Samarahan (4,259), P.212 Sibu (3,468) and P.219 Miri (1,359).

"Much as there is nothing in the Federal Constitution to prohibit security personnel and police from Peninsula Malaysia who are posted to Sarawak to vote in Sarawak, DAP feels that it ought to be a public policy that only those who have genuine connection with Sarawak be permitted to vote in Sarawak, whether Parliament or state elections.

"Connections can be by marriage and not by short term posting to Sarawak.

"These security personnel and police should vote by post in elections of their own state of origin," he suggested.

Give us back 34% seats

On  fair representation of Sarawak and Sabah, Wong said that in accordance with the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement, 34% of parliamentary seats must be from Sarawak and Sabah but it has now been reduced to a mere 25%.

The voters of Sarawak and Sabah have thereby lost their rightful and proportionate representation in Parliament, he said.

"Instead of enhancing the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement, the present representation in the lower house of Parliament is skewed in favour of Peninsula Malaysia.

"This is because the Election Commission had re-delineated constituencies which reduced the representation by Sarawak and Sabah in Parliament.

"Before Sarawak and Sabah joined to form the Federation of Malaysia, it was clearly and carefully stated in the Cobbold Commission Report and the Malaysia Agreement that the number of parliamentary seats in Peninsula Malaysia must not be more than 2/3 of the total parliamentary seats.

"This is in order to ensure that Parliament shall not be able to amend the Federal Constitution willy-nilly.

"In so doing, the special rights and safeguards of the Borneo states are protected.

"Any amendment thereof would require the support from the Borneo states.

"During those days, of the 155 Parliamentary seats, Peninsula Malaysia was allocated 104 seats, Singapore 15 seats, Sabah 16 seats and Sarawak 20 seats.

"Peninsula Malaysia had therefore 67% of the parliamentary seats. However, after re-delineation in 1974, Peninsula Malaysia had an additional 10 seats, while there was no increment for Sarawak and Sabah.

"With the withdrawal of Singapore from the Federation, Peninsula Malaysia is able to secure a two-thirds majority without the support of Sarawak and Sabah.

"The representation by Sarawak and Sabah has been further eroded recently when Peninsula Malaysia has 166 parliamentary seats.

"That represents 75% of the total 222 seats. With a total of 56 seats, Sarawak and Sabah has a mere 25% representation in Parliament," he said.

Unjustified imbalance

Wong said the imbalance is unjustified because it violates the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement.

"It violates the sanctity of the federation that Sarawak and Sabah actually joined to form the Federation of Malaysia as equal partners.

"Further, the re-delineation by the Election Commission apparently failed to consider the geographical sizes of Peninsula Malaysia (166 seats for land size of 131,598 sq km), Sarawak (31 seats for land size of 124,450 sq km) and Sabah (25 seats for land size of 73,631 sq km).

"To rectify the imbalance, the Election Commission should reinstate the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement, and re-delineate and increase the Parliamentary seats for Sarawak and Sabah," he said.

For Sarawak, the average population per constituency is around 30,000. However, pursuant to the electoral roll as at June 2011 there are five constituencies with less than 20,000 voters.

These are P200 Batang Sadong (17,898), P.203 Lubok Antu (18,334), P.206 Tanjong Manis (17,754), P.207 Igan (16,193), P.210 Kanowit (18,135), P.216 Hulu Rajang (19,900) and P.222 Lawas (17,217).

On the other hand, urban/semi urban centres show a concentration of voters. There are seven constituencies with voters exceeding 40,000.

These are P.194 Petra Jaya (44,741), P.195 Bandar Kuching (53,276), P.196 Stampin (76,494), P.211 Lanang (53,486), P.212 Sibu (60,284), P.217 Bintulu (54,821), P.219 Miri (62,147).

"Considering the geographical vastness of Sarawak, it is acceptable to give certain weightage to rural constituencies, but the larger urban/semi-urban constituencies do provide justification to increase parliamentary seats.

"Such re-delineation will ensure that there is 'fairer' representation of urban/semi-urban folks in Parliament," Wong said.

Practice 'caretaker government' policy

The DAP leader wanted the government of the day to be caretaker government as soon as Parliament or state assembly is dissolved, pointing out that there is no reason why a caretaker government is allowed to use public facilities such as government vehicles, town halls, Dewan Suarah to entice voters' support.

"The caretaker government should not be allowed to dangle development projects as election bait.

"No money or monetary gratification should be distributed in the name of it being a "caring government" in order to enhance support during the campaign time.

"The Election Commission should ensure that such unhealthy political and electoral manoeuvring is stopped once Parliament or state assembly is dissolved," he said.

He went to say that in order to gain public trust, the Election Commission should be truly independent and not beholden to any political party, especially the government.

"No election officer or returning officer shall practice double standard. One example of double standard was recently practiced in Sibu.

"The same Returning Officer for the Sibu by-election had disallowed the winning DAP candidate from making a victory speech on May 16, 2010 but he allowed the BN/SUPP winning candidate of Bawang Assan to give a lengthy victory speech in the Sarawak state election of April 16, 2011.

"Such glaring double standard ought to be avoided," he said.

Ramasamy ready to quit DAP

PRAI: Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy today declared he was prepared to leave the party for good if it comes to that.

He claimed there were baseless allegations against him and a conspiracy to tarnish his reputation.

"If it comes to the extent I have to leave, I am ready to leave the party.

"I can go back to my hometown Sitiawan.

"But even then I will not stop fighting for Indians," announced Ramasamy in his winding up speech at the Penang DAP annual convention here today.

He was responding to criticisms by delegates at the convention against his performance as DCM II.

Earlier DAP national chairman Karpal Singh warned Ramasamy to behave and not to act like a war lord.

Ramasamy admitted he had made a statement that there should not be war lords and godfathers in the party.

Ramasamy said he would put the matter now to rest and leave it to the central executive committee (CEC) to make a decision.

"I will abide by any CEC decision. CEC is a collective decision.

"Let the internal mechanism resolve this problem and face the Barisan Nasional juggernaut," said Ramasamy, the DAP deputy secretary-general.

Political guru

However, he declared to fight all the way if injustice was done to him.

He hit out at his detractors for calling him a Samy Vellu, saying that such remarks were "childish, stupid, nasty and uncalled for."

He said he hoped Karpal will give him a chance to speak and explain.

He added that he had tried to call Karpal several times over the past week, but the national chairman did not return his calls.

Ramasamy claimed he joined the DAP in August 2005, not six months before the last general in 2008 as alleged by his detractors.

He claimed to have been involved with DAP even long before that vis-à-vis late stalwarts V David and P Patto.

He said he has high respect for Karpal and veteran supremo Lim Kit Siang.

"Karpal is like a political guru to me… he has all the rights to scold me," he said, denying that he parachuted into DAP and Penang politics.

He also urged his critics, especially Seri Delima assemblyman RS Nethaji Rayer and Bagan Dalam assemblyman A Tanasekharan to reflect themselves before criticising others.

He said he was originally supposed to contest only the Batu Kawan parliamentary seat in Penang in the last election.

"But I did not know why I was given the Prai state seat as well," he said.

In his winding up speech, party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng confirmed that Ramasamy was given the Prai state seat by Karpal's suggestion.

Kedaulatan, maruah negara terancam

Umno/BN no joy for babies

Dean Johns | Dec 7, 2011
Malaysiakini

I've always had a soft spot for babies, and thus have found the fathering and nurturing of several in the course of my somewhat chequered marital career to be life-enhancing experiences.

So I was far from surprised that, of all the lovely people I was privileged to meet at the Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia dinner in KL last Saturday night, the new acquaintance I found most utterly enchanting was the youngest 'member' or at least attendee, a three-year-old aptly named Joy.

There were two reasons why my heart went out to this delightful little sprite. Firstly, her spirit of frolic and fun that inspired me to play so many silly games with her that I ended up limp with exhaustion and soaking with sweat, while she was still as fresh as the proverbial daisy and ready for more.

And secondly, she reminded me of my own similarly joyful daughter Sammie, whose birth in Malaysia 16 years ago transformed me from an appalled but passive expatriate observer of the local political scene to an outraged critic of the evils I saw her as having to face if she stayed in Umno/BN's Bolehland.

Happily she's been spared most of such problems, thanks first to the efforts of her mother, maternal grandparents and some very good teachers in Malaysia, and also her subsequent relocation into the admittedly far-from-perfect but at least somewhat more progressive Australian educational system.

But as is perhaps evident in the columns I write for Malaysiakini, I've maintained the protective rage that her arrival in my life generated, and remain inspired to vent this emotion on behalf of Malaysian sons and daughters of all ages, races, genders and religions.

Rage at the fact that, as almost everybody in this nation with even a shred of awareness knows by now, Umno/BN, behind its pretence of promoting and protecting Malay rights, religious beliefs and prosperity, has been misleading, suppressing and shamelessly ripping-off the Malaysian people, Malay and non-Malay alike, for decades.

Defective 'growing-up' milk powder

And perhaps most reprehensible, at least in the long-term, is this kleptocratic regime's depriving millions of young Malaysians of the truly excellent and enlightened education they need and deserve, while sending its own pampered offspring overseas or, in flagrant breach of its own rules, to local international schools.

And now, apparently no longer content with educationally and otherwise victimising children and adolescents, now Umno/BN has been cheating toddlers and babes in arms by selling sub-standard milk powder to their unsuspecting parents through its lavishly publicly-funded chain of 'discount' stores known as Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia, or KR1M.

Investigations by Tony Pua and other diligent opposition politicians have revealed that the now-discontinued 1Malaysia 'growing-up' milk powder previously sold for months in KR1M outlets contained no trace whatever of 15 essential nutrients, vitamins and trace elements, and provided a mere 4.5 percent of the calcium and just 7.4 percent of the iron that the relevant food regulations deem necessary for healthy growth and development of young bodies and minds.

And arguably even more disgraceful was that this same product for babies and toddlers was found to contain many times the maximum permitted level of Vitamin A, which in excess can lead to symptoms including liver dysfunction, reduced bone mineral density, skin discolouration and hair loss.

Yet, when faced with these shocking revelations, the Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai, the same Lai who lied when he denied that police fired water cannons and teargas grenades into the grounds of a hospital during the Bersih 2.0 rally earlier this year, rather than apologising or better yet resigning, attacked Tony Pua for revealing the truth to the previously unsuspecting public.

In fact, Lai had the hide to accuse Pua of "trying to politicise the matter".

Fraudulent concept

Which was hypocritical in the extreme in light of the plainly evident reality that the entire KR1M operation is just another cheap and shabby attempt by Najib Razak and his Umno/BN colleagues and cronies to use their fraudulent '1Malaysia' concept to politicise every possible aspect of society.

And speaking of trying to kid the Malaysian people, the head of Wanita Umno and Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, was apparently too busy defending her husband and children against allegations of impropriety in their involvement in the notorious National Feedlot Corporation scandal to bother about such trifles as dangerously defective milk powder.

Though admittedly her department did lavish heaps of cash on full-page colour ads in the mainstream newspapers showing her interacting with children with disabilities to demonstrate was a truly caring person she would like to be perceived as.

But there was precious little concern shown by Shahrizat or anyone else for mothers, babies or children by, or indeed for any Malaysian families other than those of members and cronies of the ruling regime, in the recent Umno general assembly.

All we saw and heard was one infantile rant after another against the opposition, and juvenile calls for oaths of loyalty to the ever-predatory party.

Not a word about any plans to address any of the countless genuine concerns confronting Malaysian families, like the rising cost of living, the worsening of the nation's corruption index, the massive wastages, frauds and thefts revealed by the recent auditor-general's report, and the budget cuts on education and health to enable the purchase of outrageously-overpriced 'defence' items like the world's most expensive patrol boats, and a fleet of armoured personnel carriers whose prices have mysteriously multiplied several times between their purchase in Turkey and delivery to the Malaysian army.

So it's as clear today as it has been for generations that, for as bright a future as possible for my young friend Joy and her contemporaries, and for even younger and as-yet-unborn babies, it's vital to put an end to the criminal misrule of Malaysia by this gang of Umno/BN boobies.
