Metallic black jibes: MIC wants sterner action

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC Youth today urged DAP to take sterner action against Pantai Remis state Assemblyman Nga Kor Ming over his "metallic black person" remarks.

Its information chief S Subramaniam said DAP seemed to be racist in dealing with its undisciplined members.

"Is Nga so influential in DAP that no action can be taken against him? It seems that DAP is now showing its racist stripes," he said, referring to DAP chairman Karpal Singh's statement that Nga will merely be given a warning.

He pointed out that DAP's Kota Alam Shah assemblyman, M Manoharan, was given a six-month suspension for his comments on the Malaysian flag, but party secretary-geneal Lim Guan Eng was let off the hook for his alleged comments that Johor was unsafe in Singapore.

"Is DAP only for the Chinese? Why was Manoharan suspended from the party but no action was taken against Nga and Lim? Is it because if a member is an Indian, he gets a harsher punishment while a Chinese would only be let off with a warning? Why the different standards?" asked Subramaniam.

Subramaniam said that Nga's "metallic black" jibes at Perak Menteri Besar Zambry Abdul Kadir insults all those of darker skins, and especially hurt the Indians.

"Why are those Indian representatives in DAP quiet about this? Do they not feel insulted or are their voices being drowned within DAP?"

"MIC Youth challenges all the MPs and state assemblymen of Indian descent (in the DAP ) to voice out their anger. A wrong is a wrong. DAP that fights for democracy is hardly democratic in this issue."

Yesterday, Karpal warned Nga, who is also DAP Perak secretary and Taiping MP, against making any racist remarks in the future and that the party would take stern action if the latter did not watch his mouth.

Nga had previously apologised for his remarks. However, he had maintained he was not referring to Zambry's skin colour or Indians.

I would cheer if a BN wakil rakyat does the RIGHT thing, so:

Belaltedly, I applaud an UMNO MP from Sabah, often notorious for his knotty remaiks with sexual innuendoes in Parliament, for being a "LONE and BRAVE VOICE" at the recent UMNO General asembly calling on NFC-embroiled Minister Sharizat Jalil to resign her minister's post becaue of her husband's alleged misdoings/breach of trust/daylight robbery of funds given, amounting to RM250mil, as soft loan by the generous BN gopvernment for the now infamous cattle rearing project in Gemas.

The minister, also Wanita UMNO chief, and her husband, arrogantly dismissed all allegations of wrongdoing, although it was the Auditor-General in its 2010 annual report which concluded that the NFC project is "in a mess".

I had written a few articles in this Blog, shouting "F"... words under my silent lips when NOT A SINGLE DELEGATE challenged Sharizat's explanation that the project awarded during former PM Pak Lah's time, hence was it a surprise that UMNO Youth chief -- who happens to be related to Pak Lah by "marriage" -- Khairy J saw it fit to defence Sharizat like she was the mother of all UMNO kids?! (did I hear cows too?)

From the Malaysian Insider, which I am beginning to like more and more -- hence I use often as a news source for my commentaries hear! -- even if the ownership was/is still linked with UMNO, viz:

Bung Mokhtar sticks to stand that Shahrizat must quit over NFC

By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal
December 05, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 5 — Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin today stood his ground and repeated his stand that Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil resign over the cattle scandal, despite growing criticisms from within Umno over his position.

The Kinabatangan MP's action has earned him the ire and scorn of Umno supporters, with pro-Umno bloggers criticising h! im and g oing out of their way to defend the embattled Shahrizat.

In response, the outspoken Umno supreme council member said he was "well aware" that his remarks have made him unpopular among members within his own party, but stressed that the reason he did so was out of concern for the future of the Malay party.

"If there are even little cracks within Umno, it can cripple and destabilise the party in the elections. Whether or not this move of mine is seen as part of a vested interest, it is up to people to judge," Bung Mokhtar (picture) told The Malaysian Insider.

"I do not expect my views to be agreed upon by all in my party. Everyone has differing views, so there will be a response, but I needed to say what has not been said," he said.

The senior lawmaker, who hails from Sabah, charged that it was his "responsibility" to speak out on the matter, saying that he wanted to avoid the issue being a liability to Umno.

"I do not deny that Shahrizat has brought a lot of good to Umno, to the country, but it is not enough when there are mistakes," he said.

In their attacks against Bung Mokhtar, pro-Umno bloggers have outlined Shahrizat's past achievements and contribution as Wanita chief and a Cabinet minister.

But the senior Barisan Nasional (BN) backbencher stressed that Umno needed to look at what was happening "right now," and how the National Feedlot Centre (NFC) issue was a dangerous one to the party if not dealt with effectively.

"Times are changing, people do not want to hear about history or past glories. We cannot continue to rely on Umno's history, we need to look beyond this," Bung Mokhtar said bluntly.

He appears to be the lone voice in addressing the touchy cattle scandal, as others appear to avoid or skirt the issue altogethe! r.

< p>When addressing delegates during the women wing's assembly, Shahrizat said she had nothing to do with the RM250 million federally-funded cattle farming project and instead urged PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to resign over the allegations.

She reportedly earned wild applause from wing members during her speech.

The Malaysian Insider however understands that Shahrizat's explanation had failed to satisfy a number of leaders in the party who, like Bung Mokhtar, believe the senior minister should bow out of the coming polls.

Bung Mokhtar has been openly critical of the NFC scandal and was the first Umno leader who called on Shahrizat to explain herself.

The Auditor-General's Report released last month had criticised the NFC, pointing out that it was now "in a mess".

The report said production in 2010 was only 3,289 head of cattle or 41.1 per cent of the target set.

But Agriculture Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar responded on October 31 that the project was a success as it met its target of 8,000 cattle by 2010 once 5,742 slaughtered cattle were taken into account.

Some things we learned today – Joyselling Ton

DEC 5 — Don't rush out to buy the Star or the NST tomorrow morning because the propaganda sheets will not report what I will be highlighting in this post. Reading some of the news reports on The Malaysian Insider today left me shaking my head.

* For the most shameful act of vote-getting, please read Prime Minister Najib Razak belated recognition of Nicol David as the country's eminent sports icon.

I can only imagine that one of the PM's advisors told him that he needed to get the Christian/non-Malay vote after the last few days of presiding over Umno's attack on Christians, Chinese at the general assembly.

So they put their heads together (probably had a Cabinet Committee) and decided that what better than to roll out David and her parents for a photograph. Tomorrow, it will be on the front pages of all the papers as a sign that Najib really believes in 1 Malaysia.

This shameless posturing for political gain also happened when Lee Chong Wei did well at All-England. Not bad; after a few days of demonising Christianity, the administration is holding up a Christian girl as an icon. I suppose anything to win an election.

* For the dumbest statement, please all rise for Defence Minister Zahid Hamidi. He said that there is no need for oversight of defence spending by Pakatan Rakyat because there is a committee made of senior armed forces personnel perusing the deals.

Was this committee asleep when Malaysia paid RM6 billion for some patrol boats, which Philippines bought for a fraction?

Oh, sorry, I forgot we also bought missiles that can go to the moon and back. Did this committee find out why Perimekar @ Razak Baginda was paid tonnes of money in the Scorpene deal?

Please la, Zahid, it is an open secret that generals are beneficiaries of defence deals. Not as much as politicians but beneficiaries nonetheless. So having the Opposition look at defence deals will reduce the opportunity for inflated contracts!

*  For the most honest statement, I would like to nominate Najib. It is in a Malay-only audience that he shows his true self and he drops all this rhetoric about 1 Malaysia.

In Shah Alam, it was Malays this and Malays that if Pakatan Rakyat comes to power. I have no problem with him showing his true colours. If this is who he is, I have no problem. After all he was a firebrand Umno Youth chief best known for that speech at the TPCA Stadium and under his watch as education minister, the final nail was driven into the coffin of Christian mission schools.

He is a Malay and it is his right to look out for his race. if he feels that the Malays will keep him in office, who am I to challenge him?

Like I said, don't expect to read this stuff in the Star. The MCA-owned paper will be busy showing its readers how Perkasa and Abim are calling for Dr Chua Soi Lek to apologise over his comments on hudud.

The message to the Chinese community is that MCA is willing to stand up to Malay groups for the sake of the Chinese community.

But what will be left out in these reports is the fact even Soi Lek knows that Umno leaders support Islamic laws but are keeping quiet just to help MCA gain support from the Chinese.

Wayang, ma.

What thy name?

Peaceful Assembly Bill mala fide, says ex-top cop
A former senior police investigating officer says the Peaceful Assembly Bill, which Parliament passed after its second reading last week, is mala fide or done with ill intentions.

NONEFormer Kuala Lumpur CID chief Mat Zain Ibrahim said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who tabled the Bill for its second reading on Nov 24, may not have the "clean hands" required to introduce new legislation that touches on "public justice".

He accused the PM of making a statutory declaration resulting in giving a false affidavit in connection with Anwar Ibrahim's Sodomy II trial, and described it as a "public injustice".

"I question Najib's motive in tabling the Public Assembly Bill and having it passed speedily in the face of so many people objecting to it.

NONE"Is it to stop protests and peaceful demonstrations over his own misconduct and abuse of power by him or senior officials of the government administration, past and present?" Mat Zain asked.

The former top cop said the fact that the government rushed with amendments to the Bill before having it quickly passed, proved that the Bill was mala fide from inception, and was intended to "whack" the people.

He said it was drafted under the watchful eyes of attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail, whose character was "dubious" following recent revelations about him.

Without mincing his words, Mat Zain said with Gani overseeing the Bill, it was like putting the rights of the people in the hands of a criminal.

"What Najib has done in the Peaceful Assembly Bill is therefore not surprising," he said.

'Challenge Bill in court'

"I also welcome the efforts made by several MPs who filed a judicial review application last Friday to challenge the legality of the Bill, and who have named Najib and the government as respondents.

NONE"In my view, this is a civilised, logical and credible move that can be taken to resolve the problem, as holding street demonstrations now will only worsen the situation."

Now was the appropriate time to test Najib in court, Mat Zain said, as the prime minister was in a bind following his affidavits in support and in reply, dated Sept 21 and 23 respectively in connection with the Sodomy II trial, could be proven to be false.

He said he believed Najib and his wife were legally advised on the affidavits as well as the repercussions of possible action, either in a civil or criminal proceeding, before they signed them.

The affidavits truly challenge Najib's credibility and he can be cross-examined on the matter, which cannot set aside, as in the case of the subpoenas issued that were set aside.

Who is the real Najib?

Najib, he said, would have a problem in making clear his real name when he made the affidavit in reply in the action regarding the Sodomy II case in court.

In Najib's affidavit in this trial, his name is written as "Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak", but when he took the oath of office as prime minister April 3, 2009, he gave his name as "Muhammad Najib", Mat Zain said.

najib"Is the oath of office taken to be the PM, in the name of Allah and before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, considered legal when he called himself Muhammad Najib? Or is the name not his," asked Mat Zain.

This situation, he said, could put the PM's post in question and if this was so, he asked, could Najib have the right to dissolve Parliament?

It is compulsory, Mat Zain said, for even the Agong and his deputy to give their true names when taking their oath of office, as stipulated in chapter three of the federal constitution.

He said the former finance minister, Daim Zainuddin, had used his real name in an affidavit in a court case in 2006. He gave his name as 'Che Abdul Daim', as is required by the law.

"This shows that giving one's true name when taking the oath or giving oath is compulsory, and not merely as an identity introduction. It is required by law and the constitution."

The question is, why did Najib drop 'Mohd' or 'Muhammad' from his name when he signed the affidavits under oath?

Therefore, Mat Zain added, the affidavits Najib filed on Sept 21 and 23 in connection with the Sodomy II trial are illegal as they were not made according to the law requiring the true name of the deponent, as had also been stated in the Sharma Kumari Shukla case on the issue of name.

**************************************************

I don't know why our PMs are ash! amed to use their real name. Were they born pariah or what?

During his period as PM, Mahathir had refused to acknowledge the use of his real name Mahathir s/o Iskandar Kutty instead went by the name Mahathir bin Mohammad. So were all the papers he signed actually legal?

Then now it has come out in the affidavits Najib had filed in connection with Sodomy II using Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak whereas his real name is Muhammad Najib.

So who is sitting in Putrajaya and acting as leader in UMNO?

Are our PMs clone to deceived Malaysians by Aliens?

The answer can only be found when Sodomy II returns. Meanwhile the Judge will be busy counting his good fortune to have the clone or the real Najib under his palm. Now how much do you think the good Judge will be asking to ensure both names are legal.

Me I think the Judge will be smart and ask for RM20 million. After all how often does one get to blackmail the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Challenge to Muhyiddin – substantiate his UMNO General Assembly speech that DAP wants to set up a Republic or apologise for the lie

Speech (2) by Lim Kit Siang at the Pakatan Rakyat national rally at Stadium Melawati, Shah Alam on Sunday, 4th December 2011 at 10.30 pm:

Challenge to Muhyiddin – substantiate his UMNO General Assembly speech that DAP wants to set up a Republic or apologise for the lie

I challenge Deputy Prime Minister and UMNO Deputy President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to substantiate his UMNO General Assembly speech that DAP wants to abolish the system of Malay sultanates and set up a republic or he should apologise for the lie.

In his speech opening UMNO's Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings' annual general assemblies on Tuesday, Muhyiddin appeared to substantiate his allegation of a DAP agenda to form a republic when he followed up with a rhetorical question:

"If not, do they dare suggest the prime minister's position be selected based solely on elections and without being chosen by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong? What is the meaning of this?

"It means that the democratic parliamentary system and the constitutional monarchy which we have been practising thus far no longer suit their interest to seize power."

But this is a downright lie as no DAP leader had ever made such a statement.

I challenge Muhyiddin to substantiate his speech and declare which DAP leader, who, where and when such a statement wanting "the Prime Minister's position to be selected based solely on elections and without being chosen by the Yang di Pertuan Agong" was made.

If Muhyiddin is unable to substantiate his irresponsible and reckless allegation at the UMNO General Assembly against the DAP for wanting to set up a republic, then he should apologise and retract it or he would be exposed as a liar of the first order.

DAP was made the "whipping boy" at the UMNO General Assembly with UMNO leaders and delegates hurling all sorts of groundless and even seditious allegations and lies against the DAP – that the DAP is anti-Malay, anti-Islam, anti-Malay Rulers and "agents of Christianisation" to bring about a "Christian Malaysia".

This only shows how desperate UMNO leaders and delegates have become because they know that time is running out for them with the approach of the 13th General Elections.

The Prime Minister and UMNO President Datuk Seri Najib Razak has often said that UMNO must change or UMNO will be changed. The speeches of UMNO leaders and delegates at the recent UMNO General Assembly have shown that UMNO is incapable of change on its own and that it must be changed by the voters by giving UMNO an opportunity to play the role of a loyal and responsible Opposition in the Federal Parliament after the next general elections.

A gathering that embarrassed all Malaysians - Malaysiakini

A gathering that embarrassed all Malaysians

VOXPOP 'All the delegates did was to attempt to outdo one another with their hatred and slander against all Pakatan members, proving there are no true statesmen in Umno.'Of contrasting wind-ups and clashing visionsvox populi small thumbnailDavid Dass: The desperation to win elections sometimes results in the adoption of strategies each party considers best to improve its prospects of winning.
In a multiracial and multi-religious society like ours, pitting one race or religion against the other would be bad politics, no matter what the political dividends.
The possibility that Malaysians - Malays and Muslims in particular - could be whipped up into a jihad to 'save' the race, religion and country is just bizarre.
There is no evidence of any kind of conspiracy to destroy the Malays, Islam or Malaysia. On the contrary, all minorities in Malaysia recognise the importance of structuring a society where all rights and sensitivities are looked after.
No political party could contemplate a government without a substantial Malay presence. The Federal Constitution secures the Malay position on language, religion and special rights and the constitutional role of the Malay rulers.
The Malays dominate the civil service, the army and the police.Righteous: The way this so-called ruling party has carried on during its gathering is nothing less than embarrassing to all Malaysians. All the delegates did was to attempt to outdo one another with their hatred and slander against all Pakatan members.
The one thing that keeps being proven is that there are no true statesmen within Umno. They are all in it for themselves, not the country.
L Joy: Pakatan leaders outclass the Umno president hands down. Let scholars study their winding down speeches and comment objectively as to who and which party can take Malaysia forward.
In the final analysis, Umno will take its leaders into the billionaire category while Pakatan may at least help to increase income levels all round and improve human development.
The voters must decide what they want and stop being blinded by cries of race and religion sensitivities that do not actually exist.Milosevic: Umno is a vast patronage machine that is incapable of any programmatic approach to governance.
It had it once, in the 60s and 70s, but began to lose it as narrow economic interests trumped national goal settings.

Its agenda now amounts to empty slogans - 1Malaysia, Best Democracy, etc - that dissipate into thin air the next day. PKR indeed is able to convey a reform agenda, one hopes, partly out of conviction. But let's face it, opposition parties are inherently in a position to take the moral high road.

The citizens can only hope that PKR indeed has a serious transformative agenda. However, it is disturbing that Anwar can only articulate a framework of rule based on idealised notions of Malay feudalism.

Some of the religious positions, while seemingly tolerant, do convey a dhimmi understanding of non-Muslims. Yes the Malay base needs to be reassured given Umno's fascist onslaught, but at some point PKR needs to formulate a modern understanding of citizenship and fairness.

Pua: Liow downplaying E coli tainted KR1M milk find

VoteforChange: Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai, remember one thing, Tony Pua as a member of the Opposition, is there as a check-and-balance.

You, as the minister of health, should ensure that shops selling sub-standard products or their suppliers should be penalised and not the people who brought this matter up for the safety and health of the rakyat. If you are a true health minister, you should take action against Mydin and his suppliers, not Pua.

Lets be fair: The health minister is keeping a low profile, especially on this major issue affecting thousands of young Malaysian children. This is a big issue and you are conveniently keeping quiet on this. Stop playing numbers selectively.

Lie detector: Liow is a disgrace. Instead of punishing KR1M for breaking the law, he is concentrating on so-called labelling discrepancies. Hello, Liow, lives are at stake!

Bluemountains: Why is there no punishment for KR1M for breaking the law? The health minister must not play politics but follow the book.

Nik Aziz mahu tanding PRU13

Beliau menjadi Menteri Besar Kelantan selepas pilihan raya umum 1990.

Malaysian Girls come to town

PETALING JAYA: It is a tale of glitz and glamour. A musical number of beauties turning into bitches.

Local beauty queen Samsara Jaya has passed away, leaving the Malaysian Girls Pageant in chaos.

But the show must go on, and two very different people have stepped up to the plate.

Samsara's personal assistant Serenity Billion wants to keep the contest respectable.

Ray Sanjay – the deceased's brother – however has other things in mind. He wants to take the show to the next level; with many a scandalous idea ready to slip from his fingers.

Featuring a list of original songs from local singer-songwriters, Malaysian Girls is a good old-fashioned musical, complete with dancing and slapsticks.

Malaysian Girls, according to the show's director Joe Hasham, will have have something for everyone, and promised it to be a crowd-pleaser.

"Whether you are a theatre-goer or non-theatre-goer, female or male audience member, you will love this musical and guaranteed to have a fun time."

"It will be a show in every sense, from the catchy songs and explosive dance moves to the glitzy costumes and high-energy performance," Hasham said in a press statement.

Written by local writer Mark Beau De Silva, the show will supposedly explore Malaysia's diverse cultural identity, and look into issues such as "beauty and identity".

The show will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) this coming December, with a separate tour held at the Penang Performing Arts Centre (PenangPAC) in January 2012.

GE 13 : Pakatan Rakyat should name their candidates now

Don't waste time on speculating or predicting on when the PM is going to dissolve parliament and call for the 13th General Election. Treat it like its going to be held next week. Its only 15 months to go before the 5 year term ends. PM has to do it within these 15 months, so don't let him has the upper hand to play you all around.

As a voter, my view is that Pakatan Rakyat should name all their candidates now.

These are my reasons:

1)It will confirm that seats distribution among the 3 parties are all finalised. No more last minute fighting over seats allocation.

2)There will still be time to make changes if feedback from rakayt on any candidate is unfavorable. Rakyat can scrutinised the candidates in more details where the CEC may have miss out.

3)Reading the news on "Karpal hits out at DAP warlords", it is the more reason to name the candidates now. You can flush out all the unhappiness, warlords or Trojan horse(if any) and concentrate fully when campaigning starts.

4)Voters are more wary about candidates now after seeing the numerous elected representatives jumping ship and some not performing.

5)Those selected candidates can start working the ground and identify what kind of problems the rakyat are facing (especially those seats that are now under BN).

6)You will have sufficient time to cool things down from the upheaval confronting unhappy members not selected.

Not naming candidates ahead but until the last minute may be part of political manoeuvring against your opponent but I doubt it really help in the present new era.

There may be some risk factors in naming the candidates early but as the saying "No risk no gain" and the PM himself is bold enough to say "Don't be afraid to take risks", so?

This will be a true test and challenge for Pakat! an Rakya t to make changes to the political scene.

DAP should reconsider its no-datukship principle

DAP's stand against accepting honorific titles betrays either its failure to understand the Malay psyche or its lack of interest in winning the respect of the community.

If DAP is serious about increasing its appeal among Malay voters, chairman Karpal Singh should not have so easily brushed aside allegations by delegates to last week's Umno assembly that members of his party insult Malay rulers when they decline datukships and other such awards.

Datuks may be a dime a dozen to the sophisticated urban Malay, but to his more traditional minded cousin in the kampung, a person holding such a title still commands awe and respect because it shows that even a sultan has recognised his worth.

Of course, a Yang DiPertua Begeri can also confer a datukship, but that point is quite irrelevant. To the Malay mind, the head of a state is royal, whether his blood is blue, green or pink.

DAP must have noticed that in Penang, any department head with a "datuk" before his name commands greater respect among civil servants than even the Chief Minister, who is only an "Encik".

Of course, they know that Lim Guan Eng is their big boss. But as long as he is not a datuk, he is still seen as someone who is not fully recognised by the palace.

Officials at the higher levels who engage regularly with Lim may know that he is an Encik by choice. However, to the lower ranking officials and ordinary citizens, his lack of a title could be an indication of his ineligibility for it.

Umno can play on this perception. Some of the more crooked characters from that party might even go around saying that the royal houses do not approve of DAP leaders because they are bad guys, racists or traitors.

With datukships in hand, DAP leaders would gain more credibility when they try to fight off allegations that their party is an enemy to Malays and Muslims.

It is all perception, and DAP as a seasoned political party should know that is what politics is all about.

Taib family’s illicit billions disclosed!

EXCLUSIVE: Taib family's illicit billions disclosed!

"Billions of illicit assets": Abdul Taib Mahmud, the Godfather of Sarawak

Research by the Bruno Manser Fund (BMF) has uncovered the vast dimensions of the Malaysian Taib family's illicit assets. According to the Swiss organization, the inner family circle of Malaysian potentate Abul Taib Mahmud has a stake in over 400 companies around the globe and holds illicit assets worth several billion US dollars.

Abdul Taib Mahmud ("Taib") has been Chief Minister, Finance Minister and Planning and Resources Management Minister of Malaysia's largest state, Sarawak, since 1981. He has been long criticized for corrupt practices and abuse of office but Malaysian authorities have failed to take action against him, despite an ongoing investigation by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC). Taib is a key supporter of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak's ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.

In Malaysia alone, Taib, his four children, eight siblings and his first cousin Hamed bin Sepawi have a stake in 332 companies worth several billion US dollars. The Taib family's share in 14 large companies' net assets alone has been calculated at 1.46 billion US dollars (4.6 billion Malaysian Ringgits). The three largest Taib family-linked companies are the 84% Taib-owned Cahya Mata Sarawak (net assets 2.4 billion Ringgits), the 25% Taib-owned Custodev Sdn Bhd (net assets 1.6 billion Ringgits) and the at least 35% Taib-owned Ta Ann Holdings Bhd (net assets: 1.4 billion Ringgits).

Cahya Mata Sarawak is a construction conglomerate listed on the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange (KLSE 2852) that has benefited massively from a cement monopoly and from untendered public contracts awarded by the Taib-led Sarawak state government. Ta Ann Holdings Bhd (KLSE 5012), which is chaired by Taib's first cousin, Hamed Sepawi, is an internationally active logging company. Since its foundation in the 1980s, Ta Ann has been granted more than 675,000 hectares of logging and plantation concessions by the Taib government. Privately-held Custodev Sdn Bhd is a Sarawak-based property development company. Achi Jaya Holdings (net assets 550 million Ringgits), which is wholly owned by the Taib family, holds a monopoly over log exports from the timber-rich state.

"We consider these corporate interests of the Taib family to be illicit assets", said BMF director Lukas Straumann today. "There are many clear indications that Taib has abused his public office to build a corruption and fraud-based billion-dollar empire."

"We are shocked to see that the Taib family has so shamelessly enriched itself while the people of Sarawak have to struggle with widespread poverty and an appalling lack of infrastructure and government services."

Apart from Malaysia, the Taib family also has stakes in at least 85 companies in 25 countries and offshore jurisdictions, namely Australia (22 companies), Bermuda (1), the British Virgin Islands (7), Brunei Darussalam (1), Cambodia (1), Canada (9), the Cayman Islands (1), Fiji (3), Hong Kong (7), India (2), Indonesia (3), Jersey (1), the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (1), Labuan (1), New Zealand (5), the People's Republic of China (2), the Philippines (1), Singapore (2), Sri Lanka (1), Thailand (2), the United Arab Emirates (1), the United Kingdom (4), the United States of America (6) and Vietnam (1).

The Bruno Manser Fund is calling on anti-corruption and anti-money-laundering authorities worldwide to investigate the Taib family's business activities and freeze Taib family assets in their countries.

Business leaders and corporations are advised not to conduct business with Taib family corporations for legal and reputational reasons.

DR. J : USNO Supports UBF and Forms Alliance to Fight for Sabah’s Rights

By Datuk Dr. Jeffrey G. Kitingan, UNITED BORNEO FRONT Chairman

The newly revived USNO became the latest entity to support the United Borneo Front (UBF) and the fight for the restoration of Sabah's rights in Malaysia. This was the message conveyed by protem USNO Vice-President, Abdullah Sani Hj. Salleh and protem Secretary-General, Datuk Arifin Datuk Abdul Salam in the presence of USNO die-hard supporters at a recent gathering at the birthplace of USNO in Kg. Tanjung Kapur, Kudat.

Abdullah Sani told the large and mixed crowd of Bajau, Suluk, Sungai, Dusun, Rungus, Kagayan and other races that the State Government leaders and UMNO in particular have failed to safeguard and protect the rights of Sabah and Sabahans.

"Pemimpin-pemimpin USNO menyokong UBF and perjuangan UBF serta pejuang tulen Sabah, Datuk Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan. Penyokong-penyokong USNO juga harus menyokong UBF dan Dr. Jeffrey demi mengembalikan hak-hak Sabah" advised Abdullah Sani to the villagers.

"USNO will work towards the unity of all races in Sabah regardless of whether they are Bajau, Suluk, KDM, Rungus, Brunei or others to reclaim the rights of Sabah and Sabahans in Malaysia" added Abdullah Sani.

Abdullah Sani told the villagers that their land problem was just one of the many examples of the State Government failing the people and that the State Government and the "wakil rakyat" have victimized the villagers by alienating the land where their homes to outsiders. Since the State Government has done little to help, Sabahans should unite to change the State Government.

The crowd was informed that Kg. Tanjung Kapor was the birthplace of USNO in 1961 and USNO will assist the villagers to defend their kampong land. Abdullah Sani further said that Tun Datu Mustapha although once the leader of the Sabah Government, the late leader had not taken an inch of the lands of the villagers other than the land for his own house which still stands today, although powerful as he was, unlike the present Barisan Nasional leaders who would do everything to alienate lands to their cronies and to the extent of "stealing" land from the local native villagers and evicting them.

Abdullah Sani then announced that "at its birthplace, USNO and its supporters will support UBF and the Borneo Agenda advocated by Dr. Jeffrey and will form an alliance with UBF and Dr. Jeffrey to change the State Government and "evict" UMNO and other Semenanjung parties from Sabah." The crowd roared in appr! oval wit h shouts of "HIDUP USNO".

In a follow-up speech, Dr. Jeffrey told the crowd that their land problem was not unique to Kg. Tg. Kapor and that the State Government has failed to protect the rights of the natives to their own land throughout Sabah as can be seen in the recent cases of land grabs and demolition of the homes of natives and the destruction of crops and plants in Sukau and Tongod.

Dr. Jeffrey welcomed the support of USNO and added that "together with the cooperation of USNO, UBF will form an alliance for all Sabahans regardless of race and religion to stand united to protect and safeguard our interests and rights and follow the motto of UBF – KALAU BUKAN KITA, SIAPA LAGI! KALAU BUKAN SEKARANG, BILA LAGI! and "UNITY IS DUTY".

Dr. Jeffrey then advised the crowd not to be misled again by the sweet talk of the so-called leaders of Barisan Nasional and to use their vote wisely. "Sabahans do not need leaders who are pulled by their noses by leaders from West Malaysia or dictated by their political bosses from Kuala Lumpur." "Sabah needs genuine "pejuang-pejuang" for Sabah and Sabahans' rights and every patriotic Sabahan should be a "pejuang" for Sabah".

Police ready to face national polls

KUALA LUMPUR: The federal police logistics department is all geared up to face the 13th general election which is expected to be held in the near future.

The Bukit Aman director of logistics department Zulkifli Abdullah said the department was discussing with the Home Ministry to determine the equipment and adequate funds required to face the election.

"The Logistics Department and the other departments have also discussed among themselves the requirements for the general election. We have always been ready and waiting for the right signal when it (general election) will be held," he said.

He said this after the Logistics Department Assembly and Presentation of Excellent Service Awards 2010 to 110 police officers and other ranks as well as civilian staff at Bukit Aman, here, today.

When asked on the distribution of the budget allocated to the Police Logistics Department in the 2012 Budget tabled in Parliament by the Prime Minister, he declined comment except to say that new equipment would be obtained in June next year at the latest.

He said the department received RM2.8 million from the 2012 development allocation to provide a store for the Narcotics Department.

Earlier, Zulkifli said five reslutions had been acepted by the department at the conference of police chiefs recently.

"The five resolutions that must be understood by every member of the Logistics Department are the management of acquisitions for the modernisation of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and strengthening of investigations; to ensure that basic 'Head to Toe' equipment were provided based on the quality and time specified; diligent spending by emphasising value for money and avoiding wastage.

"In addition, we must ensure standard acquisition based on the best practice and adherence to all regulations and financial procedures and to determine the logistical requirements to face the 13th general election," he added.

The Star Online: From tweets to public debate

Born of a challenge on TwitterJaya, come Sunday, tweets on the Peaceful Assembly Bill will turn public debate, with the main twitterers facing off.

IT was a match made in Twitter. After exchanges confined to 140 characters in TwitterJaya, lawyers Tan Keng Liang and Edmund Bon agreed to bring their debate on the Peaceful Assembly Bill (#pa2011) to the public arena.

And #EdmundBonDebatesTanKengLiang will roar at the Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism & Human Rights (PusatRakyatLB) in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, on Sunday.

Kedah Gerakan Youth chief @TanKengLiang recalled: "I saw #EdmundBonDebatesTanKengLiang on my timeline (on Nov 28) and a tweet by @saroki19 – '@EdmundBon agree to live debate #pa2011, well done. @TanKengLiang how? 1Malaysia waiting 4 answer'."

Tan believed that it would be a great opportunity for him to clarify the misconception over the Bill, and he accepted the challenge.

@EdmundBon, who is with LoyarBurok.com, MyConsti and PusatRakyatLB related:

"On Nov 28 the Bar Council was in the midst of mobilising members to participate in #Walk4Freedom (to protest against #pa2011 at Parliament) and naturally conversations on TwitterJaya veered towards the Bill.

"I was trying to simplify how the Bill detrimentally affects the layperson through #FunFacts and Tan was tweeting in support of the Bill.

"Then out of the blue @saroki19 asked 'Bon care to debate', and I said 'accepted'."

In explaining his challenge, @saroki19 said he wanted to find out "what kind of man Tan was, as he was famous in TwitterJaya".

Indeed, in TwitterJaya (the moniker of the Malaysian Twittersphere) Tan with 10,578 followers is so popular that he has his own hashtag – #KenLiangMania.

The joke in Twittersphere is if there is an election for P223 TwitterJaya, Tan will win it.

As @kcl1308 pointed out in his tweet: "I can see people are really excited about @TanKengLiang! He (is) almost like a movie star!"

The organiser, @saroki19, noted that there was interest in the debate because people wanted to see Tan in action.

"I want to see whether TKL is as articulate as he is in TJ (TwitterJaya). And the topic is quite hot at the moment," said @NickLiewKY. He will travel from Penang to Ipoh and then together with @JoLum500 head for Kuala Lumpur to witness the debate.

The debate is a must-watch for @DatuWil as @TanKengLiang is his punching bag.

"I whack him on Twitter when I have a bad day at work," he said.

"@TanKengLiang is oblivious to his own irritating persistence of fighting a losing cause."

For example, referring to Perak DAP secretary Nga Kor Ming's "Black Metallic" remark, @TanKengLiang tweeted: "So, will DAP take any action on @NgaKorMing + @NgehKooHam? Or hope Malaysians will forget about it? @LimKitSiang".

And @MikiChoo retweeted: "yawWwnn".

But to Barisan National cyber troopers, Tan is a hero.

@KhanOfWar tweeted: "@TanKengLiang is a real fighter we all #SupportTanKengLiang Kudos!"

Bon, with 3,406 followers, is no pushover in TwitterJaya.

Reading tweets about @EdmundBon, you can sense a certain adoration for him.

#BonCon is a popular hastag. According to him, "activists and friends think that I somehow 'conned' them to do activism work".

Some Twitterers think #EdmundBonDebatesTanKengLiang will be bigger than the October Tweet Festival in Petaling Jaya.

The festival broke the Guinness World Records for the most number of check-ins (1,935) at a Tweetup.

On Saturday, @LimMengKeong tweeted: "I've been learning some karate moves to protect @TanKengLiang, just in case some of his fans get too excited."

Just like maniacal Beatles fans, @PhilipGolingai expects women will throw their panties at Tan while he is debating.

The event will be moderated by @WanSaiful (Wan Saiful Wan Jan, the CEO of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs Malaysia or IDEAS).

And @HoongLing (Chew Hoong Ling, Voice of Women president, kidney donor and Durian FM DJ) has volunteered to cover the event.

Tan is hoping @TonyPua (DAP publicity secretary Tony Pua) will attend the debate so that he can consume a mug of Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia's (KR1M) Chocolate Malt in front of him.

The challenge (born in TwitterJaya) is if Tan dares to drink the malt drink, Pua will donate RM1,000 to charity.

Yesterday, Pua tweeted three photographs of cheques totalling RM1,000.

Echoing the confusion on #pa2011, @DidiMazril cheekily tweeted in Malay: "You don't need to apply for a permit to hold this debate?"

And Tan replied: "Police permit not needed 4 debate at @PusatRakyatLB. It's a private place ….. unless demo outside the building."

Is it game on for the lawyer vs lawyer debate?

Unlike Opposition MPs who staged a walkout before the Peaceful Assembly Bill 2011 was passed on Tuesday, it was unlikely Bon and Tan would #WalkOut.

And as @SmellyKateMoss tweeted: "Attention TJ! Must see!"

#International Volunteers Week (2-8 Dec): More than just about giving something for nothing

The Million Happy Faces Project booth at Little Day Out 2011, a charity fundraiser for the underprivileged children at Publika on 20 December 2011

I have a confession to make. I have no idea there was such a thing as International Volunteers Day until I was asked to write something about it here.

Being more than just a little curious and enthusiastic about the state of volunteerism in this country, I naturally volunteered (pardon the pun).

While writing this piece, it forces me to ask two interesting questions. Why would people volunteer for anything and what makes them want to sign up for something at their own expense?

First up, volunteering isn't quite as sexy or glamourous as it's made out to be. Sure, there are times when volunteers get pampered with a nice meal, free T-shirts and goodie bags. Then there are other roles that see a volunteer getting their hands dirty, sometimes quite literally.

It takes a certain degree of optimism (some would say gullibility) to traipse through mud-covered peat swamps, brave insect bites and kilometre-long walks under the hot sun (or rain) at 8am for a tree planting exercise, all without the comfort of running water or toilets. Yet, there's never a lack of volunteers, never mind the ungodly waking hours on a weekend and extra laundry to do after.

Some, like myself, are concerned about climate change and would like to do something to reduce our own carbon footprint. Others enjoy being in the outdoors, getting in touch with nature and the feeling of having a seedling in their hands while nurturing it to grow.

Volunteering automatically brings you closer to the cause you volunteered for. Whether it's planting trees, teaching kids, working with refugees or being part of a booth crew, it's a chance to see an issue through different eyes.

The environment, economy, human rights and social justice are all dicey, heavy subjects. When you get an opportunity to work with children's welfare for instance, you see first-hand why the issue is so pressing and needs to be addressed.  You often feel thankful for the people who will willingly devote their time and money into championing a cause without any thought of personal gain or glory.

For a volunteer, seeing your work having an impact is its own reward. It can even be fun.

As part of the Million Happy Faces Project, I have to somehow coax people to put on funny faces and bring out smiles in front of a camera. As if that isn't humiliating enough, their pictures are posted on Facebook and used as a backdrop for the photo booth. Sounds like a pretty embarrassing task, right? Well, you'd be surprised. There are plenty of people who would willingly (some less so) set their reservations aside and put on some of their wackiest and happiest expressions for the camera.  Clichéd as it may sound, the mood gets infectious and you'd have to be pretty cynical not to be smiling yourself by the end of the day.

Some say volunteering is an opportunity to meet people with like-minded interests. Or maybe that's another way of saying you get to meet attractive people. I can't imagine how one can possibly snag a boy/girlfriend at a tree planting session by getting knee deep in mud and stinking to high heaven afterwards in a shared car. But hey, sometimes volunteer work requires annoyingly undying optimism and possibly some degree of shamelessness.

If you meet a cute guy or gal along the way, at least they'll know how you look like at your messiest (some would call it rugged), although it may all go downhill from there.

In all seriousness though, it's empowering to meet other volunteers who are just as passionate about an issue that matters to you. Volunteers are people indulging their passion or curiosity, and at times it brings out a side that you may never see on a regular working day.

Voluntarism does not discriminate when it comes to age, ethnicity and social standing. If anything, it brings different people together in one common purpose. Very often, trying to create social change is met with hardship, sometimes even derision and ridicule. So being able to put names and faces to other people working together towards a common cause is a powerful and sometimes, a necessary incentive to keep going.

In an age and society where money talks, volunteering for anything seems almost like an oxymoron and sounds like an excuse to be manipulated into doing free work. It certainly can feel that way when a major, for profit event is run by unpaid volunteers. But I also see voluntarism as an indicator of our society's health. If we get to a point where nobody is willing to do anything unless they're being paid, what will that say about our society and ourselves as human beings? Thank goodness, we're nowhere near that, and the spirit of voluntarism remains strong, even gaining momentum as more people see a need to feel connected to issues impacting our society.

Voluntarism is a cycle of giving out, of empowering others and finding self-empowerment in the process.

Richer Than The Queen! Top TV Coverage In Canada, As Taibs’ Wealth is Exposed

Sarawak Report

Prime Time TV – Global News Canada 7.30pm Saturday

The campaign to expose the corruption behind the deforestation and land grabs in Sarawak has received a top TV billing on Canada's Global News station.

During a prime-time slot aired on Saturday night's 16X9 programme, investigative reporter Sean O'Shea focused on the massive property portfolio that has been developed in Ottawa, London and the US under the name of Jamilah Taib, the Chief Minister's oldest daughter [see 'Family Trees' 16X9 Global TV]

Threats – Sean Murray has falsely accused Sarawak Report of being funded by Malaysian opposition parties !

This means that for the first time the questions about the money laundering of Taib's corrupt kickbacks have been publicly raised in North America.

In response Sean (Hisham) Murray, Jamilah's husband, threatened Sarawak Report.  he stated "Jamilah and I find these statements about ourselves and our business false, highly defamatory and very damaging."  However, the couple refused to be interviewed by the programme.

Devastating report on the Taib family's company ownerships

The show was aired just before the publication of a separate, devastating 'blacklist' of Taib family companies by Switzerland's Bruno Manswer Foundation, now available online.

BMF's Stop Timber Corruption Report  lays out extensive research into the Taib family's company ownerships in Sarawak, Malaysia and elsewhere.

It  establishes that Taib and his immediate family (his children, siblings and cousin Hamed Sepawi) have beneficial shares in more than 400 companies in Malaysia alone.  In many of these companies they also act as the controlling directors.

The Taibs also have a further 80 companies in 25 countries across the world including Australia, the UK, US, Canada, New Zealand, Jersey, Hong Kong, British Virgin Islands, Fiji, Cayman Islands, Indonesia, India, Jersey, Saudi Arabia, Labuan, Cambodia, Brunei, China, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam !

Richer than the Queen – assets of at least one and a half billion US dollars !

BMF's 'Stop Timber Corruption' campaign is cornering Taib with allegations he has proved unable to anwer to a growing body of international critics

BMF acknowledges that this research only covers publicly available information from Malaysia's Register of Companies and other official company registers.

This means it is likely to represent just a fraction of the Taibs' actual wealth.

However, by calculating just the share values of 14 of the major companies on this list, they have estimated a total worth of one and a half billion US dollars (4.6 billion Malaysian ringgit).

Not counting their more hidden wealth, this puts the Taib family firmly into the category of one of the richest families in the world and makes them far richer than the Queen of England (whose assets are a mere half billion pounds).

Proceeds of corruption

Given that it can be clearly demonstrated that the majority of these Taib family companies have made their wealth from the receipt of contracts from the Sarawak State Government and land grants from the Sarawak State Government, it is impossible to deny that this wealth has come from the proceeds of corruption by Taib, who is Chief Minister, Finance Minister and Planning Minister of the Sarawak State Government!

My family only do business outside the country!

Business women or just beneficiaries? – Taib's oldest daughter Jamilah (who has interests in over 84 companies in Sarawak) and youngest sister Raziah (who has oil palm concessions greater than the size of Singapore).

All this from a man who had the brass-necked cheek to declare in a recorded interview just a short while ago that his family only does businessoutside the country, to avoid "being hounded" by accusations of using his political influence to enrich himself!

[see Taib's claim]

So, sadly, we have to addliar to the list of Taib Mahmud's numerous crimes.

Stolen

The wealth of the Taibs represents the wealth of the natural resources belonging to the people of Sarawak, which the Chief Minister has taken by cheating his people.  It is the value of their timber and their lands.

There is also the immense value of Sarawak's oil, which is treated by Malaysia's BN party as a national secret!

International disgrace

What rubies! – Taib's latest dependent, his new bride, decked in priceless rubies

The MACC (Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission) will continue to fail to proceed against Taib.  Their instructions are to torment him with their investigations, but not to rock BN's 100% control over Sarawak's vital federal votes.

Of course, Taib maintains this grip on Sarawak's votes through deeply corrupt practices, which recently caused 50 thousand people in Kuala Lumpur to come out on the streets calling for free and fair elections.

Shamefully, BN have just responded to those calls at the Bersih 2 rally by bringing in laws to prevent more than 3 people gathering together in a public place without a permit!

So just in the same way that the international community are waking up to Taib, it is also waking up to BN's corruption and repression in Malaysia.  Taib is going to find it harder to do his business abroad in future and BN are going to find it harder to find people prepared to speak up for them internationally.

But, wake up Sarawak!  In the end this man is your responsiblity, so don't let West Malaysia's BN Party keep treating you like meek children.  Get rid of him!

12 Oktober 2011 - Rekod Pelarian Malaysia - MP PAS Tumpat
