Seksualiti Merdeka a collateral damage

KUALA LUMPUR: Seksualiti Merdeka festival organiser, Pang Khee Teik, believes that the police ban against the festival was because it was to be officiated by Bersih 2.0 chairman S Ambiga and that they have been made a collateral damage.

I think it is because of Ambiga. It is being politicized, said Pang when met at the Burmese refugees fund-raising dinner function at the Annexe, Central Market.

The government agencies are using every opportunity to rouse sentiments against Ambiga and (Opposition Leader) Anwar Ibrahim.

We are mere collateral damage, said Pang.

He said this in response to the ban against the festival by Deputy Inspector General of Police, Khalid Abu Bakar.

Earlier today the DIG said that the police will take action under Section 27 A (1) (C) as well as 298 A of the Penal Code to prevent any functions relating to the programme.

Seksualiti Merdeka is an annual festival highlighting issues faced by lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals since 2008.

Pang also accused the government of ignoring the innocent and marginalised segments of the community.

He stressed that the festival was an avenue to hear out the plight of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual community.

All we are asking is for our side to be heard. Thats not illegal.

The chaos that they are accusing us of is actually perpetuated by those who are trying to shut us up.

We are pleased to know that Seksualiti Merdeka is as important as Bersih that it needs to be banned, he added.

There has been various opposition against the Seksualiti Merdeka programme. PAS along with a coalition of Muslim NGOs have planned to d! emonstra te against Seksualiti Merdeka after Friday prayers tomorrow in Kampung Baru.

PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat has also voiced his opposition against the festival.

Sejak kira-kira jam 5 petang, ahli kesatuan mula berhimpun.

Rahim Noor should crawl back into the woodwork

A man who infamously trampled upon the rights of others has no right to speak on human rights. He is the least qualified to speak on this subject.

Yet, the former InspectorGeneral of Police, Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor, emerging as it were from the dead, expressed some startling views on human rights.

He is quoted as having said that the coming of a human rights wave would threaten the principles on which this country was founded.

In what way would the human rights wave threaten the principles on which this country was founded?

The principles on which this country was founded is embodied in the Federal Constitution, which was agreed upon mutually by all the communities that aspired for a free and independent Malaya.

The Federal Constitution specifically guarantees the human rights of all the citizens. Indeed, it protects the rights of all Malaysians. If these rights were not guaranteed and protected, there would be no Federal Constitution to begin with and we wouldnt have attained our independence on 31 August 1957.

The human rights wave, reflected in the Bersih 2.0 Walk for Democracy that demanded clean and fair elections, cannot by any stretch of the imagination be termed as a communist wave. It is a democratic wave giving expression to the innate desire of the human spirit to be free and treated fairly and with justice.

The present wave demanding accountability, transparency, good governance, rule oflaw, the right to information, the right to assemble peacefully, the right to publish and disseminate views represents the universal rights that are upheld by the United Nations, As Malaysia is a member of the UN Human Rights Council, we are duty-bound to respect and protect these universal values.

Calling upon the Malays to unite against this human rights wave is acting foolishly and ignoring todays political reality. The vast majority of thinking Malaysians are no! t narrow -minded bigots and will not fall for this call to respond along ethnic lines.

This was clearly established when the Himpunan Sejuta was organised to inflame the sentiments of the Malays against the Christians. The fact that only about 5000 turned up which prompted Ibrahim Ali to confess that he was embarrassed by the turnout is proof enough that racial politics will be spurned by citizens of goodwill who only wish to live together in peace and harmony for the betterment of the nation.

Though it was touted as having the backing of 3000 Malay NGOs, the fact was they failed even to send two representatives each, which would have boosted the attendance to 6000. The number that turned up was a far cry from the one million that was expected. The ultras and the extremists can claim anything but gutter politics will not hoodwink the majority of peace-loving Malaysians.

Rahim Noor should crawl back into the woodwork and remain there for a long time tocome.

Join forces with GLCs,Bumi traders, Chinese urged

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has urged the local Chinese business community to continue to be partners in developing Malaysia and invest in the domestic economy.

He also urged them to join forces with both government-linked companies (GLCs) and Bumiputera businessmen to play a role in the next stage of Malaysias development.

For a long time, local Chinese businessmen have been the main domestic investors and it would be safe to say that without them, Malaysia wouldnt be where it is today.

However, increasingly over the past 10 years, more and more domestic investments have been undertaken by GLCs, Muhyiddin said in his keynote address at the third World Chinese Economic Forum here today.

He also said there is room for improvement in the relationship between Malaysia and China in the coming years.

Malaysia, he added, wants to continue to forge links, increase cooperation and make the most of each others expertise for mutual gain.

Over the next five years, we expect trade between Malaysia and China to double and reach more than US$100 billion by 2015. But while we are doing our part, I would also like to see the private sector play a greater role.

As it stands, Malaysian companies have invested over US$2 billion in China but Chinese companies have only invested US$250 million here. I would like to see this gap closed, Muhyiddin said.

He said through the New Economic Model (NEM) and the 10th Malaysia Plan, Malaysia was investing in and promoting new growth industries that will provide significant opportunities for the private sector to participate in the countrys development.

In order to make the private sector the new engine of growth, businesses need open, transpa! rent and even-handed economic stewardship.

We will continue with this approach and through greater liberalisation and deregulation, aim to create a competitive environment for the private sector to thrive, Muhyiddin said.

He pointed out that Malaysia further liberalised 17 services sub-sectors last month on top of the 27 announced in 2009, making Malaysias economy more open than it has ever been.

The forum, themed Linking East and West, was jointly organised by the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (ASLI) and the Country Heights Group.

It focuses on the emergence of the Global Chinese economic power, not only from China but also the Chinese diaspora worldwide.

PAS kesal Soi Lek agresif tentang Hudud

PETALING JAYA: Dewan Pemuda PAS Malaysia sangat kesal dengan tindakanagresif Presiden MCA, Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lekmenentang hudud, kata ketuanya Nasrudin Hassan.

Sekali lagi saya menyeru agar mereka sertai terlebih dahulu wacanaatau diskusi mengenai pel! aksanaan hukum syariat Islam.

Tidak memahaminya perlu kepada penelitian dan pengkajian. Bukanmenolaknya mentah-mentah apatah lagi menghinanya.

Storm breaks out over demolition of Malay houses...

NONEA minor storm blew up in the Penang state legislative assembly today when Umno and Pakatan Rakyat assemblypersons slugged it out over who demolished the house of a Malay resident in Pantai Jerejak.

While Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng insisted that it was an Umno contractor who demolished a squatter house in the area to pave the way for a housing project, the Opposition vehemently denied that this was so.

Lim said investigations into the matter showed that the developer that carried out the demolishment was Umno-linked Koperasi Tunas Muda, whose chairman is former Umno Batu Maung assemblyperson Mansor Musa.

"It is obvious here that it is not the Pakatan Rakyat government that demolished the houses," Lim said when winding up the state's 2012 Budget debate at the state legislative assembly.

"I say confidently that the state government has never demolished any house without providing proper compensation," he added.

Lim was responding to a question from Pulau Jerejak assemblyperson Sim Tze Tzin, who said an Umno-linked developer had demolished the house in his constituency.

'Developer not Umno-linked'

Bayan Lepas assemblyperson Syed Ameeruddin Syed Ahmad in his response said although the Koperasi Tunas Muda chairperson is an Umno man, the board comprises members from other parties as well, such as PKR.

Syed Ameeruddin said when the court ordered the eviction of the residents and the bailiff arrived at the site, there was nothing that could be done to stop the demolition.

"Attempts to stop the eviction by should have been made earlier by the assemblyperson of the area," he said, referring to Sim, ! who is a lso PKR Bayan Baru chief.

NONETeluk Bahang assemblyperson Hilmi Yahya (left) said Umno did not blame the DAP when villages were demolished by developers who were DAP members.

"We never stooped so low to blame DAP when the Seberang Jaya Municipal Council demolished hawkers stalls in Taman Pelangi," Hilmi said.

"Please show some humility. It is like DAP can do no wrong... this is not right at all."

Dato Keramat assemblyperson Jagdeep Singh Deo refuted the claim that nothing could be done when the bailiff arrived to evict the residents.

"The assemblyperson has the right to ask the bailiff to hold back the demolition," he said, adding that the baliff acts on the order obtained by the developer, who may not want to hold back the exercise.

Deputy Chief Minister I Mansor Othman then said he had made efforts to intervene in several evictions, for example, in Teluk Kumbar and Balik Pulau, where the developers were willing to negotiate.

"Do you think we did not call Koperasi Tunas Muda developer to discuss it? The company did not want to (discuss the demolition)," Mansor said.

"The house that was demolished without compensation belong to a PKR member, those who were Umno members got compensation," he said.

Developer has no sympathy

Lim said he was often accused of being anti-Islam by Umno, and anti-non-Muslims by Gerakan for increasing allocations for Muslim affairs programmes.

However, it was clear from this episode that those who marginalised the Malays were "none other than Umno".

The Umno-linked developer, Li! m said, not only lacked sympathy but displayed arrogance in its attitude towards poverty.

"We feel the developer's act was not appropriate, especially when the company is chaired by an Umno person.

"Moreover, the house was occupied by a 70-year-old senior citizen with his wife and daughter, who is also a single mother," he said.

Lim added that the state government would help the family by asking the Penang Municipal Council not to approve any application for development until the family was provided with proper compensation.

Hindraf slams labour law amendments

GEORGE TOWN: Hindraf Makkal Sakti has joined the growing chorus against the amendments to the Employment Act 1955, calling on the Putrajaya administration to scrap the changes.

Hindraf Makkal Sakti supremo P Waythamoorthy insisted that the changes would revive the dismantled colonial system in which indentured labourers were brought in from India and exploited in this country to benefit the ruling class.

The London-based leader described the amendments as feudal labour policies in which the rich would mercilessly exploit the working class to get richer.

He dismissed the governments claim that the changes would reform the labour system, pointing out that the changes were pro-capitalist policies designed to benefit the ruling elites and their rich cronies.

The working class will remain as the downtrodden society. The government should scrap the amendments and introduce liberal policies for the workforce.

Amendments should be made to strengthen workers rights, interests and benefits, not to deprive them, Waythamoorthy told FMT.

Critics, especially trade unionists, have claimed that the labour law amendments would exploit workers and benefit political cronies.

They claimed that amendments would promote outsourcing of workers to middlemen without providing any protection for the workers.

Waythamoorthy said the outsourcing formula was similar to issuing taxi permits to Umno and other Barisan Nasional cronies, in which the working class taxi operators benefit little.

Return to slavery

Human Resources Minister Dr S Subramaniam said that the ministry had gone through rigorous consultation with various parties, including workers representative the Mal! aysian T rades Union Congress (MTUC).

He defended the amendments, saying that it was not intended to promote or institutionalise contractors for labour.

He said that it was to ensure workers rights were protected when all outsource agents were registered and monitored.

But union groups called the amendments a return to slavery, anti-worker and anti-union.

MTUC had staged a picket outside Parliament and would be organising a nationwide picket against the amendments today.

Stressing on the current workers uprising worldwide against capitalist exploitation, Waythamoorthy called on Putrajaya to do away with the amendments.

Or else, Malaysian protests against the amendments will turn into a global anti-capitalist movement similar to current demonstrations in America and elsewhere, he warned.

Differences between Indonesia & Malaysia

Differences between Indonesia & Malaysia from a retired German
lecturer P. Feisenberg who had worked in Penang during Tunku's days
and in Jakarta in Suharto's time. An interesting account of his
observations and gloomy prediction of the future of a young nation ...

A big divide between the two countries yet they live next to each
other and both are Muslim countries.

Is this because there is a Mahathir ( and an UMNO ) in one whereas
there is none in the other ?

I always tell my friend that Indonesia is not the best country in the
world to work and live but since working in Indonesia for about 5
years, I dont have the feeling that I am living in a Muslim country
despite 93% of Indonesians are Muslim. 99.9% of my colleagues are
Muslim and we go for lunch and dinner together and sometimes to a
Chinese restaurant that served pork and there is no fuss about it.
(For your information the people who sell pork are Muslim bosses
are Chinese and employ Indonesian Muslim to cut and sell pork in the
wet markets)

All 5-star hotels served pork bacon and ham for breakfast and are
prepared by Muslim.

Alcohol is sold everywhere in the street and Indonesia No 1 selling
beer is Bintang and is brewed locally and is consumed by all Muslim
openly. No issue.

During fasting month the Muslims are free to decide if they want to
fast or eat as normal no issue at all and no one catch them..

The president and vice president are elected by the people and so are
the governors of the city (in Malaysia we call them Mentri Besar). No
one is appointed by the President or in Malaysia by the PM.

National holidays Hari Raya Idul Fitri is 2 days and Chinese New
Year is 1 day but Christian enjoy 3 days Christmas, Ascension of
Christ and Good Friday. The Hindu in Bali has 1 day for Hari RayaNyepi celebrated only in Bali. Wesak day is also a public holiday.

A Muslim can convert to a Christian tomorrow and then to a Buddhist
the next dayand back to a Muslim. .no issue at all.

In supermarket pork is sold side by side with chicken and beef.no
issue at all..

I can go on and on.in short Indonesia is a very liberal Muslim
country.. definitely not Malaysia. FYI our Malaysian senior government
officer suka Indonesia you know why!!!

Subject: Another Report: Why I left for our poorer neighbour Indonesia

This writer is absolutely correct and gave a very fair view of
Indonesia. I have been in and out of Indonesia for the past 10 years.
Sometimes, my stay is up to one month per visit. I have worked with
senior Indonesia managers as well as low level staff. I have also
interacted with lots of direct sellers from all sorts of background. I
have dealt with the Indonesian civil servants.

They don't talk about race. The mass media do not propagate racial or
religious divides. They don't spin story of Christian fighting the
Muslim or Muslim fighting the Christian. Husband and wife can have
different religious belief. There is not such fuss as Halal
restaurant. Tony Roma in Indonesia serves the best pork rib. In all
the Tony Roma restaurants Muslim and non Muslim sit and eat together
on one table. I ate pork rib, my Muslim colleagues ate beef and lamb.
There is no such thing as a Halal and non Halal section.

Comparing the environment and the working culture in Indonesia between
pre 1998 (Suharto's era) and the year 2008, you can see the vast
improvement in Indonesia civil services.

During Suharto era, my visit to Tax office (Kantor Pajak) cannot be
done without carrying cash for coffee money. The tax
officer will always start with " Pak dari Malaysia mahu chak kopi
dulu". And this small favor money must be given and openly counted on
his desk before any discussion.

My last visit in 200! 8 to the government office (Departmen Pentadbiran,
you cannot use Jabatan Kerajaan. They hated the Raja), you cannot even
mention anything about "Kopi". See the vast difference. SYB sent his
own brother-in-law to jail. Suharto's youngest son, Tommy Suharto was
jailed. Do you see this in Malaysia ?

Malaysia is rotting. And the writer is absolutely correct. If the
situation is not changed, Malaysia will be the biggest exporter of
maids to Indonesia, 10 years down the road. Padam muka orang orang
kampong.

Muslims in Indonesia have no problem with patronizing outlets that
sell alcohol or non-halal food, even if they choose not to have any.
In Malaysia, the Muslims make a big fuss over small things which they
claim are not halal. You may argue that there are fanatics here in
Indonesia, but the number is small relative to the population. Just
look around Malaysia. Everywhere you look, you get fanatics.

Living in the light of Truth

FMT LETTER

From May Chee Chook Ying, via e-mail

Its been one harrowing month. However, reading about the selfless act of the Thai soldiers forming a human barricade, holding on to each other to prevent a neighbourhood from going under the deluge of the swollen Chao Phraya River, brought back some measure of faith in humanity for me. Its acts like this that keep me going, to feel hope when all else appears to be lost. Since hope tends to appear unnoticed between faith and love, Im hoping that theres a lot more love and faith out there than we can feel!

These little acts of mercy are what they are to be in solidarity with our brothers and sisters when the going gets tough. They are not signs of guilt, like someone opined when my little girl gave a tissue to him during my moms funeral recently. For her to show that moment of tenderness to someone who has always put her down, says a lot more about her character than his.

Im very sure those soldiers were helping to save the lives of the common folk. They werent there to save only the rich and famous, they were there for everybody especially those who didnt have the means to secure their houses from acts of nature. I, for one, have always taught my kids to look for Jesus in the little ones, the Lazaruses of society for the physicians can heal themselves. Ive always told my kids to avoid those who think they belong to a supreme race, like a plague!

Its infantile to think that every child in school would want to belong to a group of girls or boys who think they are the smartest, richest or best at everything. If only one can hear what their detractors have to say. Anyway, they are just kids; they will grow out of it. Twenty years down the line, well see who will have the last laugh. I feel almost cruel to say that like the way Ive always regretted that I told someone that Pride comes before a fall. He has not got up since. I wished I didnt say it, honestly I do.

Its strange how some people who! had fla sh-in the pan successes or moments tend to dwell in the past. They indoctrinate those ill-informed about their heroics and so-called sacrifices but conveniently deleting their indiscretions, misdeeds and acts of injustices to others, including help rendered. They raise hell and fury; finding issues with some. They keep in their hearts all these years things said during heated moments when the ones they aggrieved most have already forgiven them. I guess malice does have a long memory. This stirring of a bucket of shit is most unwise; it hits first and worst the one who stirs it!

It gives me great pleasure to see those yellow-haired boys who used to sell illegal vcds turning over a new leaf. I see them now selling mangoes out of their bone-shaker car trunks, walking up and down the pasar malams selling curry puffs but Ive to take my hat off to this group of youngsters selling cakes.

Once, one of them, on seeing me walk by without stopping at their stall kept shouting for my attention. Auntie, Ive been shouting for so long. Why you dont want to buy my cake today-ah? he said, almost indignantly. I had to laugh. So, I told him that I will give him face by buying his layered cake.
On a previous occasion, the older guy asked me to taste a piece of his chocolate cake. I told him it was ok. I, too, can bake, so it was ok for something that costs only RM5. He wasnt satisfied and proceeded to tell me that something was not right. He felt that it was bitter. I told him that I like it bitter since I didnt have a sweet tooth. He, then, told me he will make another batch and improve on it.

They arent my babies, these yellow-haired boys but I feel as proud as a mother. They want to do good; they want to be good at what they do. Do they need to have an IQ of 180? No, they only need to have an iota of decency. The reality is they need to put food on their tables back home. They need to feed their loved ones. They need to clothe them. Most of all, they need to show exemplary leadership to those who loo! k up to them.

Thank God they do not behave like those who like to blame others for their misfortune; pointing a finger at others, dismissing at least three others pointing back at themselves! Its true that human personality cannot develop unless a person has something to care for and to defend; something to fight for.

Those who wallow in self-pity can only blame themselves for being caught in a time warp, while others have gone on to lead more meaningful lives. (By the way, they have since outgrown the yellow-haired look. They now, sport dark hair.

Keeping the commandment of love is what distinguishes people of the light from those who live in darkness; those who live in the truth from those who live in denial. It is said that, He who hates his brother is a murderer. Bloody wars have resulted from empty arguments. When we refuse to argue at any point of time, it does not mean we are wrong or we agree with those empty arguments. We hold our peace out of love and respect.

A protracted argument, especially one as childish as Who started it first, only ends with more hearts broken. Though we do not have any illusion of what someone is, that does not stop us from loving him. He is still our own. If we love authentically, we never need to feel superior or that we need others to recognise our merits. We just simply realise that it is this love that will liberate us. If money can untie chains of commitment to one another, then it is the cheapest price to pay!

If someone told me that my children could go around bragging about being wealthy, I would die of shame. I guess the reason why Ive yet to be struck by lightning is due to the fact that my children know better! I tell my children its very important to be true to oneself. The gifts we receive from God must be treated with utmost care and to be used for the larger good, including money.

Money is something that can both be easily acquired and lost. It therefore, does not define a person. I warn them against allowing money to possess ! them and to think that it is this money that can approve a moral order which justifies ones privileges; lest they forget the Gospel values they ought to live by that of justice and humility. The wall that a rich man willingly builds in his life, becomes after death, an abyss that cannot be bridged. The one who thinks he can live with this form of separation will be on the other side forever.

Most people think they become righteous by their own efforts. Its a form of idolatry when one thinks so highly of himself. Guess they have not learnt one of lifes greatest lesson that the lowly will be exalted and the arrogant brought low. I pray each day that my kids will keep themselves grounded with humility, that they do not live in sin for when one live in sin, the truth is silenced.

I hope they do not get carried away by todays prevalent society of consumers where the ideal is to satisfy every desire and profit from life to the maximum. Its the latter thats turning humans into monsters! The need to manipulate, the need to lie and the need to stab others in the back.

Is that the happiness that we seek? Wouldnt it leave a better taste in our mouths if we show love, mercy and justice to others? Wouldnt we sleep better if we recognise the dignity of others and their right to a meaningful life? Wouldnt it be better for all of us if we live in the truth?

Its been raining. I hope my mum is not crying from heaven. I hope she forgives us for the silliness we have displayed these last ten days. I hope she knows that in spite of ourselves, we do love each other very much. God bless your soul, mom, and please intercede for our well-being. I do miss you so. May your rest in peace.

Lim fending off a third force

GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has been facing a unique challenge to his political might in Penang since the start of this year and it is not from the Barisan Nasional.

Instead, it is being mounted through the third force representation of Parti Cinta Malaysia, Kita and several Malay-based NGOs who claim to enjoy links with Lims ally PAS.

Initially in 2008, it was BN, who played the opposition role although it was mostly muted as it was still struggling to come to terms with the fact it was no longer the state government.

This was then followed by several state PKR leaders who went rogue, such as former deputy chief minister Mohamed Fairus Khairuddin and ex-Penang PKR chairman Zahrain Mohd Hashim as well as Nibong Tebal MP Tan Tee Beng.

Besides dealing with their own internal party squabble, they encountered problems with Lim, portrayed by many within his inner circle as an uncomprising and strong-willed leader.

When the dust had settled, all three had quit PKR to either join BN, Kita or become Independent elected representative.

Lims administration was once again besieged, this time, it came from Malay-based NGOs such as Pajim and Perkasa with one, claiming to represent Penang PAS members.

They were the most vocal, ironically fighting for the same issues, which Pakatan had previously campaigned on, such as affordable housing, equality and human rights.

Lately, it is the third voice who raised contentious issues to the point of distracting Lim and his administration, which is gearing up for the next general election.

PCM exposed a land sale involving a DAP state assemblyman, especially when Lim had declared that no Pakatan rep should purchase any land during their tenu! re of th e state.

Lim was forced to come the assemblymans defence, saying that he was merely re-acquiring his ancestral land and that the transaction was above board.

Still, eyebrows were raised as the issue had undermined Lims oft quoted CAT (Competency, Accountability and Transparency) governance.

Tan had also revealed a car park at the foot of Penang Hill, which was constructed under the Penang Development Corporations clout and approved by the Pakatan government in 2008.

The car park was found to be defective and too narrow so much so only Kancil vehicle models could be accommodated. Tan lodge a report with the MACC about possible fraud.

He also raised the issue of whether the last remaining natural green lung, Penang Hill, would be subjected to redevelopment.

Such issues did resonate with the fence-sitters and the social activists, dominant in this highly critical pace of Penang.

Mustapa Amin, a member of an NGO, who specialises in education, said while Pakatan is performing well in Penang, it is prone to committing mistakes due to inexperience.

Mustapa said people would want to give the benefit of doubt to the government, as they need time and opportunity to show their capabilities and their key performance indicators.

Any new employee undergoes a probationary period. It is the same with Pakatan and their own representatives, he said.

Honeymoon over

Mustapa claimed the issues raised to illustrate Pakatans weakness are not big enough to rock Lims administration, but there is uneasiness about Pakatans crisis management.

He declared that their honeymoon period as a state government is now effectively over, since an election is looming.

He said that Pakatan should reign in unsavoury forms of protests such as vandalism, rallies, which disrupt traffic and racial undertones before it affects the everyday lives of citizens.

For now, as PCM vice-president Huan Cheng Guan (photo) says, the third voice is basking in their role in pointing out shortcomings as they are not beholden to either BN or Pakatan.

We criticise without fear or favour as we have the interests of the people, said Huan, adding that PCM has intentions to contest at least five seats in Penang in the next election.

Tan, who is the sole Kita elected representative, is also considering the possibility of defending his Nibong Tebal parliamentary seat, or contest a state seat on the island.

Both are buoyed by the fact that the issues they are raising have caught the attention of the state government and certain quarters, giving rise to the possibility that they may have a degree of support if they chose to contest in the election.

Now, there is also a possibility that a former ally may turn into an adversary over the proposed RM300-million subterranean Penang International Convention and Exhibition Center (sPICE) project.

Bukit Gelugor PKR division head Lim Boo Chang has openly questioned the process involved to approve the project, claiming it was bulldozed at the expense of the Penang Municipalitys autonomy.

For now, Pakatan has made a principled and strategic stand that the states under its control Kedah, Penang, Selangor and Kelantan may not dissolve its own respective state legislative assemblies even if Najib Tun Razak does not pave the way for the 13th general election.

Singapore-based political observer Jason Wong said that Pakatan has upped the ante on the importance of those states. If each of the four have separate elections then the country could be dealing with holding elections from now until next year, said Wong

We may witness one round of parliamentary election, eight state elections followed by four other ! rounds o f state elections instead of just one main Malaysian election as in the past, added Wong.

Being yourself, that makes you special

People want to be different and they want to be special. Lets start by asking why.

Source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/59615235@N05/6306687179/sizes/m/in/photostream/

Why does one want to be different? Is it a must to put up a mask just to fit in a clique?

Do you realize that, sometimes, just being ourselves is one of our biggest fears in life? Were afraid of not being accepted and tend to act to please others, instead of ourselves. If God created us the way we are, why try to be someone were not? Can anyone explain this? I believe most of us have experienced this before.

I remember my mum telling me that if I dont get a high paying job, I will not be accepted in society. When I asked her why, she answered in a very off-hand manner saying, Dont ask so much because the world is just like this, and all we can do is follow the flow. I listened to her.

As I grew older, I came to realise that what she said was not true. However, I often see this happening among my friends. I notice how they act differently to different people. To tell the truth, Ive never questioned their behavior (or rather, I havent had the guts to do so). Sometimes I ask myself whether I behave in the same manner. If yes, why? Will I be able to change myself? And if I do, can I help change others as well? Right now Im still wondering if its achievable. Hopefully time will tell.

Frankly speaking, I do not want to live in a world where everyone puts up a mask. However I do understand that, in some circumstances, such as attending someones birthday party whom I dont know very well, its hard to just be ourselves. Again I pose the question, is it achievable for everyone not to put up a mask in societ! y?

I once read this from somewhere:

Worry about your character, not your reputation; because your character is who you are, and your reputation is what people think you are.

Do you agree? Is it for the sake of reputation that society behaves like this? The question is for you to answer.

Being someone else does not make you special, being yourself makes you special.

Polls In January??

The nerve of them to even consider having the elections so soon, when they haven't even made any attempt to clean up the elections as per the BERSIH 2.0 demands.

Malaysia can kiss goodbye its hopes of changing the government if the playing field is not level.

Gemas feedlot debacle: Half-truths and pertinent questions

FMT LETTER

From Nawawi Mohamad, via e-mail

A RM73.64 million government project in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan linked to Shahrizat Abdul Jalils family to produce 8,000 heads of cattle in 2010 and ultimately 60,000 heads in 2015 has turned into a mess when production was at only 3,289 heads in 2010, that is only 41.1%. This was in the Auditor-Generals report and carried in the media.

In parliament Noh Omar who is the Agriculture Minister said that the project has been successful because the total number of cattle brought into the farm between 2008 to 2010 was 8,016

But, the main purpose of the farm is to produce cows and not to bring in cows from somewhere, feed them and slaughter! When we talk about producing, it involves breeding and everything that goes with it.

The reporting by the media and response by the minister was not entirely correct. The money involved was RM 131 (not just RM73.64 million) a portion of RM250 million soft loan and thus far RM131 million have been disbursed as confirmed and defended by the Prime Minister.

The Gemas feedlot is supposed to be the National Feedlot Authority in conjunction with the MoA and the Negeri Sembilan government.

The annual target envisaged by the Ministry of Agriculture is to produce 1.3 million heads in 2010 and not 60,000. It is a comprehensive scheme with the Gemas feedlot centre as the main anchor with 310 satellite feedlot sites all over the country and one private feedlot. This is how the loan was allocated; the Gemas feedlot was given RM80 million and the rest RM40 million.

The Gemas feedlot has to produce (for itself) 60,000 heads annually in 2010 (not 2015) and it has a major role to play in supplying the feeder cows, food, technical assistance, advise and other services for the entire feedlot schemes nationwide including the private one. Now remember, the target was 1.3 million cows believe it or not!

Thus when the main player in Gemas could only produced 3,289 head! s for it self in 2010, how can it be able to provide all the feeder cows, food and other services for the rest of the satellite feedlots?

The other question that needs to be asked is what happens to the 311 feedlots in the scheme? The next question is what should be done next? Would it be much cheaper to just import the cows? Is the MACC going in?

This is money-wasting scheme as a result of money-making and one more never ending burden the rakyat has to bear. Could it be that the Umno/BN government thought that the rakyat are cows?

Maglin Dennis D'Cruz's directive to exclude and destroy audio and video recordings of Bersih 2.0 is a denial of the facts of Malaysian history

Media statement by Teresa Kok Suh Sim in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, 2nd November 2011:

Maglin Dennis D'Cruz's directive to exclude and destroy audio and video recordings of Bersih 2.0 is a denial of the facts of Malaysian history

Deputy Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Maglin Dennis D'Cruz directive to exclude audio and visual recordings of the Bersih 2.0 rally from the National Archives and his desire to have them destroyed reveals Barisan Nasional (BN) Government's denial syndrome and its foolishness in trying to erase the facts of history. (Source: http://www.sinchew.com.my/node/225108?tid=1 )

His wild accusation that the Bersih 2.0 civil society movement for clean and fair elections "destroys the state" and causes "national unrest" is preposterous because it is and has always been strongly opposed to the use of violence.

The Bersih 2.0 public rally held on 9 July 2011 was a day to remember in Malaysian history because on that day, 50,000 Malaysians of all backgrounds and ethnicities walked for electoral reform. D'Cruz should not insult the intelligence of the 50,000 Malaysians by suggesting they were anything but peaceful.

Any "national unrest" which occurred was in fact caused by the BN Government which installed unnecessary road blockades, causing massive traffic jams in and around the city, inconveniencing thousands and further employed disproportionate use of force in the form of tear gas and chemical-laced water cannons to attack peaceful and unarmed Bersih 2.0 supporters.

It's ironical that D'Cruz made this statement at the National Archives when the National Archives is meant to be a repository of Malaysia's history based on fact and evidence, not partisanship.

Perhaps the true reason he would like to have the audiovisual evidence of Bersih 2.0 destroyed is to hide the Government's oppression and abuse of power! .

Furthermore, his directive to the National Archive will only make Malaysia an international laughing stock as video clips of Bersih 2.0 have already been broadcast throughout the world and can be easily found all over the Internet.

D'Cruz can destroy the physical audio and videos of Bersih 2.0 but he can never erase the memory of 9 July 2011 from the minds of the 50,000 Malaysians who marched for clean and free elections.

He cannot erase the memory of the pain and suffocation felt by them when they were hit with tear gas and chemical-laced water cannons.

And he cannot erase the feeling of solidarity and pride felt by each of them when they recognised in each other, not a Melayu, a Cina or an India, but a fellow Malaysian who shares the same dream of a more democratic and socially just Malaysia, and is willing to stand up for it.

Macaus youth flock to gambling school

By Judith Evans

MACAU: In a big, garishly decorated room, dealers deftly lay out cards for baccarat while an eager crowd watches a roulette wheel spin. But the money changing hands is fake, while the punters are scribbling down notes on casino mathematics, because this isnt a casino but a classroom.

Thousands of students aged from 18 upwards pass through the mock casino run by the Macau Polytechnic Institute each year, training to work in the enormous gambling venues that dominate the worlds biggest gaming city.

As the sector balloons, young locals hold the aces in the job market: with the law giving them priority, they are almost guaranteed a job in gaming if they want one.

This is where they come to learn how to deal smoothly, calculate chips in a split second, and deal with the bad losers; to pass exams in baccarat, blackjack and Texas hold-em.

We used to earn bad salaries now we earn more, and are no longer afraid of finding ourselves without a job, says student Derek Kwok, 30, who is re-training as a dealer after working in hotels for 10 years.

He has witnessed the gaming sectors extraordinary growth since licensing was opened up to foreign competition in the early 2000s, and wants to be part of that boom. Last year the sector grew by 57 percent.

Kwok is one of over 6,600 students taking vocational courses in gaming at the polytechnic this year, another sign of the speed of expansion in an industry that currently employs about 43,000, or 13.5 percent of the workforce, and indirectly provides work to many more.

The mock casino is laid out as an entire gaming floor, complete with cash office and multicoloured carpet,! and stu dents take turns to play the parts of gamblers and staff.

The lions share of students are learning to work as dealers, but the polytechnic also offers courses in cash management, slot machines and surveillance, while it has recently started offering a degree programme for those aiming for higher management.

Most of the courses are brief, and the salaries on graduation good: dealers start on over 10,000 patacas (US $1,280) per month, said trainer Lucy Ki. Unemployment for June to August this year in Macau was just 2.6 percent.

But those who already work in the industry, and are back at the polytechnic to further their skills, say there are more difficult lessons to be learned in the new Macau.

Yoki Leung, 28, is studying on the degree course and works as a dealer, but her real interests are more sedate. She hates working shifts in a 24-hour casino, and would prefer to work in government while studying cooking and flower arranging on the side.

The best jobs

Leung says she wishes gaming licences had not been opened up.

Everyone was happy in the past, when earning a monthly salary of 10,000 patacas was plenty. Now everyone agrees that the gambling jobs are the best in the city, and yet even with them, you cant afford a flat, she said.

Her fellow students also cite inflation, social problems and the burden of working nights. The courses include advice on gambling addiction, to which dealers as well as punters can succumb.

And others speak of the strange effect of seeing huge amounts of money won and lost every day.

Mandi Ieong, a degree student aged 20, works as a host on high-roller junket trips that bring in VIP gamblers from Thailand, Japan and South Korea. She has become adept at dealing with demands from gamers to borrow more money once their millions run out.

I have seen them win 10 million (patacas) and I have seen them lose 10 million, so I am not excited and I am not disappointed when I watch, she said.

Ieon g is not interested in gambling herself. All of my friends, we have realised that if you gamble for a long time, you will lose everything. All my classmates, we are studying this, we know that theres actually nothing to win, she said.

But grateful for the prosperity that gaming has brought, Ieong brushes aside her familys concerns over the antisocial hours and her own scepticism about gambling. Im young, Im still just trying things out, she said.

Professor Zeng Zhonglu, who researches the economics of gambling at the institute, says workers in the industry can afford to be carefree for the next five to six years, as the eye-popping growth is set to continue.

But then it will slow as the sector matures, he predicts, based on surveys of the gamblers who visit Macau. Meanwhile locals will continue to battle inflation and threats to their living standards.

Questions remain over the future of those now entering the industry as dealers, who some casinos will reject later as too old for the quick calculations the role requires.

No other choices

Meanwhile, Zeng said, young people are becoming complacent, with many failing to carry on their education because so many jobs are available with minimal training.

He urges both individuals and Macau as a whole to prepare for the future change of pace.

It is not possible for the industry to keep growing forever, said Zeng.

Alex Lo, 35, co-ordinates training on slot machines at the mock casino and is proud that this is the only such training course in Asia.

He has thrown himself into the field with zest, campaigning for better industry standards and comparing Macaus slot technology avidly with that elsewhere.

But like many in the mock casino, he laughs when asked what he thinks of gamblers, and says: They cant control themselves.

And on whether he enjoys working in the industry, Lo who first trained as an electrical engineer says simply: Theres no other choices.

NOH KENCING PASAL PUSAT FIDLOT KEBANGSAAN

PKR meminta Menteri Pertanian dan Industri Asas Tani, Datuk Noh Omar menyemak keseluruhan dasar dan sasaran kementeriannya sebelum mengeluarkan kenyataan yang dianggap memperbodoh rakyat.

Pengarah Strategi Keadilan, Rafizi Ramli berkata, jawapan Noh mempertahankan prestasi National Feedlot Corporation Sdn Bhd yang diterajui keluarga Datuk Seri Sharizat Jalil menimbulkan banyak persoalan.

The declining state of Malaysias Senate aka Dewan Negara...

Malaysias Dewan Negara or Senate consists of 70 members, the majority of whom (44) are appointed by the King on the advice of the Prime Minister. The rest represent their states.

The Senates original role of functioning as a check and balance on Parliament was entirely lost once the majority of the Senators owed their appointments to the PM. They are no longer likely to question bills passed by the Parliament.

The Senate has therefore become a way for the BN to appoint to Ministerial position those who have been rejected by the people; like Women's minister Shahrizat Jalil, Gerakan president Koh Tsu Koon and MIC chief G Palanivel. It is also a way for BN political parties to fulfill their members' insatiable thirst for power, position and money. The Senates real objective seems irrevocably lost.

Immediately offered himself as a candidate for GE-13

The recent appointment of KS Nallakaruppan, a one-time follower of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim but now turned bitter critic, underlines the declining state of Malaysias Senate. Nallakaruppan is not known to have distinguished himself in any industry nor for his social service. His party, the MUIP, is only representative of himself.

Nalla is best known for turning up during the election season,! going f rom ceramah to ceramah frequently with Ummi Hafilda, hurling the most vile and jaded calumnies against Anwar Ibrahim. This will be accompanied by his declaration that he will provide proof of his accusations at the right time. For which right time, you will wait in vain!

It is quite clear that Nallakaruppan is being rewarded for his willingness to be used by the BN to character-assassinate Anwar. In like circumstances, another PKR turncoat and now Umno Senator, Ezam Mohd Noor, was also rewarded with a senatorship for the same reason.

It is unfortunate that the House is being debased by the inclusion of such dubious and despicable characters as members. It is even more unfortunate that the Malaysian taxpayer is paying their fat salaries, their allowances, their claims and their RM200,000 allocation.

Nallakaruppan mumbled his way through his oath today, and then promptly declared that he would be willing to stand for elections if the Prime Minister wished it. Najib is unlikely to wish any such thing, as Nallakaruppan is most certainly not a winning candidate, even if he is good for a few laughs.

MIC still feuding and doing nothing for the Indians

Nallas appointment is also bound to rub the MIC the wrong way, as they like to portray themselves as the sole representative of the Indians in the BN. The Senate was crawling with various oily MIC functionaries and politicians on Wednesday; as one of them was also being sworn in as a Senator.

Among them was K Devamany, who is certain to be dropped as the MICs candidate for Cameron Highlands, as well as M Saravanan and P Kamalanathan, who may also not be retained. The MIC is split in a continuing feud between G Palanivel and S! amy Vell u.

The MIC will most certainly resent that Nallas slot too did not go to them. Though you wouldnt be able to tell from the way they were shaking his pudgy hand, false smile plastered firmly on.

One wonders what the poverty-ridden Indian in the estate would make of the sight of a whole bunch of his leaders, wearing expensive suits, eating off the well-laden buffet tables at Parliament while plotting and scheming against each other in little groups of four and five. At intervals, they would get up, smile and shake hands with passing politicians whom they may very well have been just deriding. The hypocrisy of the political creature.

We can only hope that all these fortune-seekers and mercenaries will be dumped in the dustbin of history, after the next general election.-Ismail Dahlan

Perlantikan Datuk Nalakaruppan Sebagai Senator, Satu Lagi Penghinaan Kepada Pemimpin UMNO BN Yang 'Setia Pada Parti' Itu Sebenarnya !

RM5,000 in zakat funds 'used for BN propaganda'?

Almost RM5,000 of tithe (zakat) funds has been used to pay for propaganda material, claimed an opposition MP today.

Mahfuz Omar (PAS-Pokok Sena) said that Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Jamil Khir Baharom in charge of Islamic affairs, had bought 250 copies of a book entitled Bukti PAS Bukan Parti Islam (Proof PAS is not an Islamic Party) using that money.

Mahfuz alleged that Jamil(left) had ordered Yayasan Taqwa, an incorporated body under the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council entrusted to manage the tithe money, to pay RM4,975 for the books.

However, it is not clear that zakat money was used for the payment.

This is clearly an abuse of abuse of power by the minister... zakat should be used to help the less fortunate, rebuked the MP.

He also handed out copies of a letter signed by Jamils senior private secretary Ab Jabar Mohamad Aris to the media, asking Yayasan Taqwas general manager Ahmad Ayob Ibrahim to make the payment to one Ramesh Rao.

It is stated in the letter that Ramesh is general manager of RR Media, and believed to be the publisher of the books. Also attached with the letter were transaction documents including the quotation and the invoice between RR Media and Jamils ministry.

The books, I believe, were distributed to muezzins and imams from Kedah who attended a three-series course in Bangi early this year, said Mahfuz.

The issue is not distribution of the books but the usage! of zaka t money, he added.
