US government knew about corrupt Taib
I will reveal more, Khalid warns Mais...
Unbowed by charges pressed against him for teaching Islam without a permit, Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad has intensified his attack against the Selangor religious authorities, whom he has accused of being stooges of Prime Minister Najib Razak's UMNO party. He vowed to expose "more details" over the next two weeks.Khalid Samad, the PAS deputy commissioner of Selangor also challenged the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) to come clean on a secret meeting held last month with Jais, other Muslim NGOs and members of the Attorney-General's office.
"I will be increasing my attacks over the next two weeks because I want to show people, the system has been infiltrated by UMNO. Politics has become the overriding motive," Khalid Samad told Malaysia Chronicle.
'Christianisation' to oust MB
Khalid had accused some of the state religious officials of being part of an alleged black conspiracy to oust Mentri Besar Khalid Ibrahim by getting the Sultan to remove him for allowing the "Christianisation" of the state.
"A denial is not enough, show the minutes of the meeting. Why were the people from the Attorney General's office not involved. How come the Muslim community in Selangor were not informed and Mais only confirms it after I wrote about it in my blog," said Khalid Samad.
In his blog, Khalid had written that the groups met in the wake of the Jais raid on the Damansara Utama Methodist Church Centre to allegedly clamp down on proselytization. The Muslim groups had planned to hand over a memorandum of complaint to the Sultan against the chief minister.
It looks like an effort to topple him. It is hoped that none of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state executive councillors, espec! ially th ose from PAS, were involved, Khalid Samad wrote in his blog.
Victimising Khalid Samad, like Dr Asri previously
Jais is the Selangor Islamic Religious Department and had a day ago charged Khalid under Section 119 of the Selangor Islamic Religious Administration Enactment for allegedly giving a sermon at a surau or prayer hall on August 16.
In Selangor, religious scholars have to get a permit from JAIS before they can teach Islam. The move is regarded a way for the Jais to exert control over the Muslims in the state. Muslim scholars whom they regard as a threat to their authority, such as former Perlis Mufti Dr Asri Zainul Abidin, have been victimised before in the same way as Khalid. Jais even refused to renew the permit of PAS Selangor Commissoner Dr Abdul Rani Osman.
"I would not be surprsied at all if this is their motive. It will get worse when the General Election gets closer because they would want to deny us access to certain platforms to reach the Muslim community," said Khalid, when asked if Jais was trying to 'silence' him over the DUMC and MB Khalid fiascos.
He admitted to not having a permit but denied teaching, as accused by Jais, saying that he was merely giving a talk. "It is wrong to teach but where does it say it is wrong to preach or talk about Islam."
"Look at how fast Jais can act when they want to. They suddenly summon me, charged me and even set November 24 to hear my trial. But when it comes to the DUMC report, see how they drag their feet," the PAS MP added.
"The entire raid lasted only about an hour or so and yet they have to ask for an extension of time. It is nowe almost two months. Is this fair to all the parties inluding the 12 Muslims accused of apostasy and the church officials who have to put up with the bad publicity and threats."
Mais deniesMeanwhile, Mais chairman Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa today confirmed the meeting, but denied it was part of a conspiracy to topple MB Khalid Ibrahim. According to Adzib, the meeting was to explain to the NGOs why Jais raided the DUMC chuch on August 3.
I, as the Mais head, and Jais explained what happened to the Islamic NGOs... not just them reading from the papers or The Malaysian Insider... but this was not a political meeting, merely to explain what actually happened, Malaysian Insider quoted Adzib as saying.
We only explained. At the end, they said they have received accurate facts... Mais and Jais duty is to give out correct information.
When asked to confirm if the meeting was attended by representatives from the A-Gs Chambers, Adzib only replied that some of the NGO members present in the meeting also served within government agencies like the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim).
But they are also part of NGOs and they were representing the NGOs, not any government agency, Adzib fudged.

Reforms should also have covered constitutional matters - Malay Mail
WHILE outgoing Chief Justice Tun Zaki Azmi has won accolades for instituting sweeping reforms in the judicial system, the Bar Council feels he fell short on key constitutional amendments which would have put to rest long-standing conflicts of laws.
Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee, in calling the Chief Justice (CJ) "a friend of the Bar" for his sweeping reforms and unprecedented consultations with lawyers, also said Zaki could have done more for constitutional reforms.
We would have liked a more progressive development in constitutional matters but Zaki had missed certain opportunities, such as in S. Shamala's case which is an important issue," said Lim when met by The Malay Mail.
"Our judges, when deciding on such sensitive issues, cannot hide behind technicalities as the law is there to provide remedy and relief to litigants. If there is a need to change the law, then change the law.
Lim was responding to The Malay Mail's Q&A interview with Zaki (published yesterday and today), in which theChief Justice had said he could not decide on the fundamental issues in 39-year-old Shamala's case as she was in contempt of court by opting to take her two sons to Australia instead of facing custody hearings against her Muslim-convert ex-husband in Malaysia.
On whether it was right to put the ball at the feet of the polit! icians t o settle thorny issues, such as the Civil-Syariah courts overlap, Lim said: Judges are the last frontier. It is not a good defence to say politicians should sort out these issues. Three-quarters of our Federal Constitution has political dimensions to it, so the minute there is a constitutional case, it becomes political.
Lim said another missed opportunity was upholding the principle that the will of the people should prevail, as in the Perak constitutional crisis in early 2009 in which Barisan Nasional did a reverse takeover of the State, causing Pakatan Rakyat to lose the State they had won in the March 8, 2008, general election.
There were also cases relating to the Internal Security Act (ISA) and human rights which Zaki could have better addressed. To be fair, we have seen some brave judges and judgments under Zaki's watch," he said, alluding to the disclosure of government agreements with concessionaires, which, however, was later overruled and sex discrimination cases.
"If Zaki was as Machiavellian as some people believed he was, we would not have had some decisions where judges had ruled against the government (which, however, had appealed against those decisions)."
Lim said there were reservations to Zaki's appointment in 2008 due to his links with Umno as their former legal advisor.
But when looking back at his tenure, Zaki has done a lot of good, and he was the man of the moment to improve the machinery and efficiency of the judicial system.
He was a friend of the Bar, notwithstanding some issues initially, such as his initiating KPIs (key performance indicators) to improve delivery and the installing of ! video re corders in court. Thanks to his open-mindedness, much of our complaints were resolved. The Bar welcomes Zaki back to its fold and we hope he will take up a practising certificate again."
When interviewed by The Malay Mail, Zaki had stressed it was unethical for senior members of the Bench (judiciary) to return to practice.
Lim also opined that while the Malaysian Bench had been through a long dark chapter from the late 1980s (due to the removal of Tun Mohamed Salleh Abas), things improved somewhat during the watch of Zaki's predecessors, Tun Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah (2000-2003) and Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamad (2007-2008).
"Zaki brought a new culture of hard work and discipline among judges. He also brought in a culture of consultation between Bar and Bench, and a culture of technology," said Lim who described the proximity between the Bar and Bench during Zaki's tenure as positive as judges who were not up to the mark were a lot more careful due to the access the Bar had to Zaki.
But Zaki was not one to just accept anything the Bar said as he had defended his judges, and also put in time and effort to verify claims.
Lim is confident the CJ's successor, Tan Sri Arifin Zakaria, will continue Zaki's policies but hoped Arifin would initiate improvements on the quality of judgments. Zaki ends his tenure as the country's sixth CJ on Sept 12, and on the same day, Arifin will take over.
Whatever you may say, Zaki has left the judiciary in a far better shape then when he entered it, said Lim.

Katanya, tindakan Jais ini seumpama arahan Nabi s.a.w sampaikan daripadaku walaupun satu ayat dimansuhkan.

Dismal Indian politicians
FMT LETTER
From Janarthani Arumugam, via e-mail
I read with great interest the article in Malaysiakini entitled Ramasamy snubs forum, wants debate with Najib. I admit his decision not to be part of the publicity mongering stunt by BN and its honchos, is admirable.
Prof Ramasamy has made some significant contributions to the study of Malaysian Indians in his wonderful academic treatises, however his impact has not been as significant in politics.
Judging from the lack of proactive policies which have been implemented in Pakatan states for a marginalised community, there seems to be little interest to address the legitimate grouses of ethnic Indians in this country.
The thing is, when does the Indian debate rise beyond the petty dialectics of minor politicians vying for a little bit of power? When will these ethnic representatives be worthy of a debate on rights and social justice?
To be statesmen, they need to be able to shake off their petty egos so that they may elevate the struggle to one beyond ethnicity and appeasing their political masters. The case in point would be the MIC leaders who have long towed the line in return for two Ministerial positions which benefits the politically privileged in MIC and not the community.
It is timely to move beyond racial chauvinism and deal with real issues facing the community. Has there been an independent study conducted to understand poverty among Indians? Do we know the root causes of poverty amongst them?
Why plantation workers have been demanding rightfully for an increase in wages for the past 53 years, despite having GLCs for employers? Do we have affirmative action for economically and socially marginalised groups regardless of their ethnicity? And I am not talking about the New Economic Policy which has benefited a minority of wealthy relatives of the ruling elite.
It is timely for Indians to reflect on the realities of living in a nation that ! has forg otten their toil and sacrifice. They need become independent of leaders whose representational politics erodes the bargaining position of the community.
The next GE will bring these wolves at our doors demanding for votes with empty bags of promises. We need to be able to see through this charade. The community needs to rise above chauvinism and start using the language of rights, demand for social justice and due recognition for their contributions to this nation.
I am Malaysian
FMT LETTER
From Leroy Luar, via e-mail
Once upon a time, a gentleman-prince politician debonair, orator extraordinaire and all around hero stepped up onto a podium in a stadium and into history where he declared, in no uncertain terms, that his country was to be released from the shackles of imperialism. Malaysia, then called Malaya, was to be free; and along with her her people as well.
In one word, repeated seven times culled to three in televised footage in the interest of editorial brevity Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al Haj vindicated the struggles and sacrifices of his predecessors and contemporaries, gave voice to the hopes and dreams of a generation of newly liberated citizens and gifted to generations of Malaysians to come our very own backyard to play in, bedrooms to rest in, kitchens to feed and be fed in and libraries to learn and teach in. He gave to us the trappings and comforts. He gave to us a home to call our own.
Right from the moment when I became Prime Minister, my aim, my thinking, my planning and as a matter of fact, my whole heart was set on building up a prosperous and happy Malayan society. said the good Tunku.
And prosperous we certainly were and in spite of the recession still are. Malaysia boasts sophisticated infrastructure soaring sky-scrapers, soon-to-be far reaching mass transit, near nationwide broadband access a curiously resilient economy, priceless natural resources, insulation from damaging natural phenomena. By all accounts, Malaysia seems to have it all made.
Yet, in spite of all the roses on full display for the world to see, beneath the blossoms are thorns in equal, if not greater, profusion. As recent research has indicated, Malaysians have never been more divided from one another, never more suspicious of each other. Malaysians who believed that ethnic unity (perpaduan kaum) as sincere and friendly declined from 54% in 2006 to 35% in 2011, a drop of 19% while t! he numbe r of people who felt ethnic unity was superficial rose from 29% to 44%.
And who can blame them? It is all we see in the news lately; Christians allegedly proselytising to unwilling Muslims, political parties shattering the fabric of our nation for favours and votes, this, that or the other entitlement or special right being intruded upon, documents of all sorts the Bible, the Quran, the Constitution being bandied about to justify acts of varying atrocities. And so on and so forth.
Above all else, it has become painfully apparent that fear is the biggest thing we all seem to have in abundance lately. While not completely debilitating in its effects at this stage, I fear this environment of fear if allowed to fester unchecked will be that one proverbial straw responsible for breaking our poor camels back.
For fear of a colour for fear of what it represents, for fear of the ideas it may inspire and the actions that may follow our reputation was bruised, a handful of people were injured, scores more were arrested and the national capital was sent under siege in an unprecedented move probably more suited for actual times of Emergency.
For fear of breaking with archaic, outmoded traditions for fear of acknowledging that change may be a good thing, for fear of losing the privileges and benefits these traditions guarantee great transgressions to human rights have been committed. A recent incident remains fresh in the memories of Malaysians who care: a woman lost her life for want of that one right to which every human being is entitled not the right to dress as she wants, speak as she pleases or marry as she wishes but the fundamental right to her identity and by extension, her existence.
For fear of causing offence in this so hyper-sensitive period of time for fear of being considered agent provocateur on the one hand; as one ill-timed and badly-told joke recently suffered, for fear of being considered traitorous on the other hand we have been r! eminded time and again to muzzle ourselves, drown out our thoughts with distractions and along with it our voices and opinions.
Oh yes, even as we gear up to commemorate the anniversary of our nations liberation flags, anthems, parades, dances, retail promotions the whole shebang, I cant help but wonder; Are we truly Merdeka?
For there is more to Merdeka than just colourful, and sometimes bizarre, costumes that no longer have any relevance to or practicality in our daily lives. It is more than merely watching a parade convoy of the best defense technology money can buy or distributing and flying miniature flags for one day and forgetting all about if for the rest of the year.
Merdeka is more than just a public relations exercise. It transcends interviews and campaigns, eclipses personality-driven travelogues and professionally produced advertisements and leaves behind in the dust the limiting confines of tongue-twisting slogans and incomprehensible catchphrases.
Merdeka is the man and occasional woman who drives the buses we all take to go to work in. Merdeka cheered alongside each other when Harimau Malaya took home the Suzuki Cup 2011 and groaned in unison when Lee Chong Wei fell, yet again, to his bitter rival. Merdeka agrees to disagree with each other on so many things at so many levels people are not born identical after all without being disagreeable. Merdeka lives in the myriad faces we see every day, bustling about and around each other, sharing space and time, in our mad and sometimes futile scramble to weather our personal storms just to get through the day with our dignity intact.
In Tunku Abdul Rahmans declaration of independence, he concludes The Persekutuan Tanah Melayu is and with Gods blessing shall be for ever a sovereign democratic and independent State founded upon the principles of liberty and justice and ever seeking the welfare and happiness of its people.
In our 54th year of Independence, I believe it is more important ! than ev er for us to come together not only in celebration yes, after all is said and done, there is reason still to celebrate for we have made it this far, have we not? but also in meaningful reflection of what we can, and should, do to live up to the ideals of Merdeka as put forth by the good Tunku himself. If recent events are an indication of things to come, a great change is set to sweep through the nation and for better or for worse, we are all bound as one with our collective fates hanging in the balance.
In looking forward to such day as will come when we can all step forward for our day in the sun as friends, as family and as equals, long may the Jalur Gemilang fly and long may we all prosper in solidarity and in harmony.

A plot to oust Selangor MB...
Shah Alam MP Khalid has alleged that several religious authorities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are conspiring to topple Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim. The PAS leader claimed that the groups, including the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais), Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) chairman Datuk Setia Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa, several Islamic NGOs and representatives from the Attorney-Generals Chambers, held a secret meeting last month to discuss a plan aimed at unseating the first-term state leader.
The move, he alleged, was planned following Jais controversial raid on the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) in Petaling Jaya on August 3.
They discussed handing over a memorandum to the Selangor Sultan, attacking the mentri besar on this issue of Christianisation.
It looks like an effort to topple him. It is hoped that none of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state executive councillors, especially those from PAS, were involved, he wrote in his blog last night.
When contacted by The Malaysian Insider, however, Khalid said he was unsure of the specific date of the meeting but claimed that prior to Election 2008, the religious authorities hardly interfered in the then Barisan Nasional (BN) state governments administration.
But in the era of a welfare-oriented mentri besar (Khalid Ibrahim), one who is clean of corruption and prioritises the people, any excuse is used to blast the mentri besar.
There are those who are beginning to ask, why was there silence before and now they are making noise? Then there are those who say tha! t before they got a slice but now they do not even get dust... so that is why they are all chaotic now, he said.
In his entry, Khalid also accused Umno of exploiting the palaces name for BNs political interest. He said during BNs reign in Selangor, news involving the Sultan was rarely publicised save for those involving the palaces customary functions.
This is Umnos behaviour. When they are no longer in demand, they bring the Sultan to the fore when before, they were the ones casting him out.
What I am most concerned about is that the image of the palace and the Sultan will be tarnished if Umno-BN continues to drag them into politics, he said.
Khalid also likened Umnos willingness to sacrifice the public and the country for the sake of recapturing Selangor to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafis rule. On Jais action on DUMC, Khalid expressed disappointment that the religious authority had requested another month to complete its report.
This, he said, would reflect negatively on the departments professionalism as they had acted speedily when inspecting the church but chose to drag its feet when required to produce a report on the incident.
I understand that the DUMC officials have met with PAS, clarifying that the church had nothing to do with the dinner function that night, he said, adding that the NGO Harapan Komuniti had been the one requesting to use the churchs premises on the night of the raid.
The claim of apostasy was made by unknown persons and Jais acted without prior investigation. Perhaps the parties that reported the claim had a bad intention from the start? Khalid questioned.
Khalid Ibrahim has announced that he will receive Jais full report when he returns from his working trip to Germany on September 16.
Sekarang habuk pun tiada, maka itulah sebabnya bikin kecoh.
Dulu pada zaman BN kaki rasuah memerintah Selangor, jarang sekali kedengaran berita Sultan Selangor kecuali berhubung program adat istiadat. Sekarang, Baginda kerap diketengahkan, menegur dan membidas MB. Itulah perangai UMNO.

BN govt doesnt care about animal welfare
This plea goes out to animal lovers/activists and the 300 pet guardians whose pet cats were left to die by an illegally run pet boarding centre please hang on to your votes until the federal government bucks up and starts taking cases of animal cruelty seriously.
To some, this may sound no less a threat and so be it, considering how the federal government, under Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, has shown zero concern over the numerous cases of cruelty to animals.
So much so that the 124-year-old London-based The Mayhew Animal Home and Humane Education Centre has concluded that the indifference shown by the Malaysian authorities towards the many cases of animal abuse reflects Malaysias lack of respect for its animals.
To the 300 pet owners who left their pets at the Petknode boarding centre in Damansara Damai to travel during the recent Hari Raya Aidilfitri long holidays, their anger is very much justified. And so is their frustration with the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) for long having shrugged off its responsibility.
In 1995, repeated calls by a concerned neighbour to the DVS to come to the rescue of Sheena, a German Shephered canine abandoned by her owner when he moved house, were ignored by the department. Needless to say, Sheenas blood is on DVS hands.
In the Petknode case, the owners returned over the past weekend to discover that their pets had been abandoned for nine days without food or water, and were covered in their own waste. Thirteen of the 300 rescued cats died due to starvation and many more were missing.
Petknode owners, Yushairi Khairuddin and Shahrul Azuwan Adanan, were brought in for questioning on Sept 4 evening but were released just hours later without being charged.
Bad enough that these! two tur ned up to be conmen using a pet boarding as a cover. Yushairi and Shahrul gave the pet owners the worst nightmare ever by refusing to reveal the location where 100 more cats were kept.
Typically, Malaysias lame laws saw no reason to remand these two men, that too after Shahruls family-turned-partner in crime helped clean out the Petknode premises and destroy all evidence.
Shame! This is how animal lovers and activists define DVS impotency in sensing urgency to act in the Petknode case. As they say, both the dead and animals cannot speak up, hence the take it easy attitude adopted by the DVS in attending to cases of animal abuses brought to its attention.
But for how long more does the DVS intend to sit back and enjoy its makan gaji status, the least bothered that its reputation precedes its image?
Take DVS and PJCC to task
Over 100 activists and owners stormed the Damansara Damai police station on Sept 5 evening demanding that police take immediate action in finding the missing felines and persecute both Yushairi and Shahrul. Fingers were also pointed at the DVS which has taken over the case.
But lawyer N Surendran told FMT that although the DVS was investigating the cruelty charge, the police are still responsible for investigating the missing cats case.
The police are working on some leads but the problem is that the culprits have been released, he said after joining the group at the police station on the night of Sept 5.
Surendran added: When DVS took over the investigations, the police washed their hands off the case and now the men are free to do whatever they want. The two should have been held further.
He said the distraught group is demanding that the duo be charged with cheating and theft which carry a heavier penalty than a cruelty charge.
But the Criminal Investigation Department has yet to classify it as such so I hope they do it soon, he said. This is a clear-cut case of cheating and theft, and we want ! to see t hese monsters behind bars.
And then comes the news that confirms that our local authorities are doing what they are good at makan gaji buta without breaking a sweat. How else then does one explain the fact that the Petaling Jaya City Council (PJCC) had no idea that Petknode had been operating illegally since 2009.
The fact that Petknode was an illegal entity, never paying for its operational licence or renewing it since 2009, only came to light now, after the owners cheated the pet owners and caused the death of 13 cats who starved to death.
So much for Najibs performance now promise! Together with the DVS, the PJCC too must be taken to task for failing to do its job.
Makan gaji buta mentality cannot go on
The local councils of this country have become too comfortable in their comfort zone, taking home their gaji or salary, without batting an eyelid where job performance goes.
This makan gaji buta (not working hard for your money) mentality has to stop. What more has to happen before the local councils here wake up and take their job seriously?
In my previous articles concerning cruelty to animals, I had cited the many cases of animal abuse, particularly dogs, committed by the local council enforcement workers. But it seems that more effort is required to tear down the comfort zone of these councils.
The crimes against animals in this country are painfully troubling. Last year, an elderly woman was traumatised when the Ipoh City Council put to sleep her loyal and licensed therapy dog. The council tried to absolve itself by saying it thought the dog was a street animal.
In March last year, too, a concerned citizen wrote a letter to a news portal depicting the horror of witnessing a dog being abused at the Kepong central KTM station by Kuala Lumpur City Hall workers who tied the dog to a grille and shoved a piece of wood down its throat.
The dog was bleeding and surrounded by its faeces. Its suffering did not bother ! these Ci ty Hall workers who were more concerned about sprucing up the area in preparation for a visit by a Cabinet minister.
The workers escaped punishment. Why were they not punished? Was the dogs life not precious and wothy of respect?
Yet, another case involved the Kuala Langat District Council which was reported to have killed nine pedigree dogs without any veterinary assessment
In 2005, The Star reported a cat breeder was charged in court with neglecting his cats by forcing them to lie inside small cages alongside their faeces, resulting in an unbearable stench.
In another incident in Johor Baru, five men armed with sticks attacked several street cats and dogs under the care of the Johor Baru Humane Touch Animal Welfare Society in Taman Delima.
Malaysias lousy human and animal rights record
It is no hidden secret that the human rights record under the Barisan Nasional-led government sucks. Add now the animal rights record as well. Does this shame the BN government even an iota or has it become so blinded by power and money that it doesnt care two hoots for both human and animal welfare?
The Petknode case has left animal lovers fuming. Equally livid is the Malaysian Animal Welfare Society. Its president Shenaaz Khan said the government does not care about animal abuse cases.
The pet owners (affected by Petknode) can make as many police reports (against Petknode) as they want, but what is going to be done after the reports are made? she asked.
Like many animal lovers and animal activists who have given up on the DVS, Shenaaz too would not be surprised if the DVS let off Petknodes owners with nothing more than a slap on the wrist.
Shenaaz said: They (DVS) are the enforcement agency with regard to domestic animals (but) not much action will be taken against (Petknode).
They (Petknode) will certainly get away with it, there will be a public outcry for a while, the company will lose its licence, but (later on), it will! just se t up another business elsewhere.
Shenaaz said that DVS officials are not animal-friendly and lax in taking action against animal abusers.
She also criticised the Animal Act 1953 (2006 Amendment), arguing that it is not adequate to deal with animal abuse cases.
Currently, the Act states that anyone guilty of cruelty to animals would be liable to a RM200 fine or a six-month jail term or both.
Sheenaz then cited Chao Xiao Weis case as an example. In March this year, Chao stomped on three kittens.
Her actions, captured on CCTV and spread over the Internet, led her to being slapped with a RM400 fine but no jail term.
Sheenaz also slammed the Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry, which oversees the DVS, for constantly promising to raise the Acts maximum fine to RM50,000 and one years jail.
Its just something they like to talk about to shut people up, she said, adding that the minister, Noh Omar, did not follow up with his promises.
Thank you, Shenaaz for opening up the long overdue can of worms. It is now left to the Najib-led government to either rebuke the DVS for being downright lazy and irresponsible or do what it does best ignore animal abuses taking place in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, animal activists and the Press must never cease to badger the federal government to shape up and respect all living beings, big or small regardless.
Umno guna taktik propaganda Hitler

OUTRAGE AS TAIBS TA ANN FILES LOSSES IN TASMANIA

Sarawak Report
Senator Bob Brown, Leader of Australias Green Party
The Leader of Australias Green Party, Senator Bob Brown from Tasmania, has issued a statement deploring the fact that the Taib family timber company Ta Ann has once again declared losses in the state.
Ta Ann is the worlds biggest hardwood timber company in terms of market capitalisation, achieving a revenue of over 800 million ringgit last year, a 25% increase on the year before. The company has also declared a 25% profit margin in its latestAnnual Report.
Yet, to the fury of environmentalists, the company managed to extract massive public subsidies to set up business inTasmania. It is nowextracting timber fromthe remaining wildforest areas, amid huge controversy.
And, despite those subsidies the company has just announced further losses. Yesterday the senatorstated:
Since it began operation in Tasmania, Ta Ann has made a net loss of about $18 million, despite receiving $10 million in direct public subsidies and being housed in premises which cost Forestry Tasmania $22 million and which it runs at a loss. When public money is poured into poor business models in forestry, we have less to spend on our hospitals, schools and national parks[Senator Bob Brown]
- Battling like the Penan in Tasmania
Australians overwhelmingly reject logging
The protest comes har! d on the heals of a recent opinion poll conducted by the Green Party, showingjust how unpopular logging is in Australia. 88% of people surveyed said they want all logging of their wild jungle stopped immediately and that the 570,000 hectares of native forests in Tasmaniashould be turned into a National Park.
The Greens are therefore demanding to know why anapparently powerful lobbyhas nevertheless managed to extract such subsidies for Ta Ann and gain the companyaccess to the state, only to see the money wasted?
Thepoll was carried out late last month:
Question:
As part of the Tasmanian Forest Intergovernmental Agreement, 570,000 hectares of native forests were identified as needing immediate protection. Do you support or oppose the Tasmanian Government protecting the 570,000 hectares of forests by making them National Parks?
Support 85%
Oppose 10%
Neither/Dont know 5%
Taib family business

- Hamid Sepawi Taibs cousin and key crony is CEO of Ta Ann
The concern amongst Tasmanians about the activities of Ta Ann has increased withgrowingpublic understanding in Australia about the nature of this Sarawak company and its links to the Chief Minister, who has fabulously enriched his family at the expense of the Borneo jungle andits people.
Ta Anniswidely acknowledged to beone of the mainvehicles for Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmuds personal business interests in Sarawak, which he has run like a personal fiefdom for the past 30 years.
Like many of his otherwealth creating concerns, Ta Ann is headed by his cousin, the Chief ExecutiveHamid Sepawi. Sepawi is also the public companys largest shareholder, controlling a stated 26% of the sharesalongside a! nother k ey Taib crony and political side-kick, Wahab Dolah. Wahabs brother, Said Bin Haji Dolah,is also a Director on the Board.
Sepawiis listed by Forbes asone of Malaysias wealthiest men. However, students of Sarawak affairs recognise him as merely another of Taibs placemen, or so-called nominees. The usualhandsome reward for such services, according to insiders, is10% of the profits, mainly from timber extraction and oil palm production.
Less than 5% of Sarawaks virgin forests, which were virtually intact in the60s, nowremain.
It has nevertheless been routine for the handful of crony companies licenced by Taib to strip out the jungle,to postminimal profits and beg for lower royalties, thereby escapinggenuinetaxation in the State and depriving the people of Sarawak of at least some realcompensation for the loss of their unparalleled asset.
Another Taib crony company, Samling, which has an appalling environmental record, has likewise been criticisedfor logging for years in Guyana, while failing to ever register a profit!
Questions for the Australian authorities
Sepawi also has strong personal as well as business connections with Australia. His wife is Australian and he is believed to have acquired Australian citizenship and to spend most of his time now in his home inAustralia.
It is believed he hasstrategically moved from Kuching, where Taibs corruption and control of the economyis being increasingly questioned, even by the Malaysian authorities.
This raisesseveral questions for the Australian authorities as well, given Sepawis immense wealth and his investments in that country.

- Said Bin Haji Dolah Another crony on the Board of Ta Ann. His brother is a main shareholder and political ally of Taib in the rulling PBB party
Because, as Malay! sias own Anti Corruption Commission continues itsinvestigation intoSepawes cousin, Taib Mahmud, the legitimacyof that wealthand those investments is increasingly suspect.
The septuagenarian Chief Minister, who also acts as Finance Minister and Planning and Resources Minister, has hadtotal control of every licence and permit issued in the State over the last 30s years.
Sepawe has been an outstanding beneficiary in what can only be described as rampant nepotism at best. Nepotism is corrupt.
Ina development just this week Switzerlands Bruno Manser Foundationissued a strong letter to the Australian Governmentrequesting that the extensive business and property interestsof the Taib family and their associates be investigated by the Australian authorities, on the basis that they are the proceeds of extensive corruption and money laundering. Sepawi is one of those key family associates.
Indeed, Australia is believed to be one of the main countries where the Chief Minister has invested the proceeds of his timber corruption. Now, through the activities of Ta Ann, it is also one of the countriesthat has becomeenmeshed in the global logging network spawned by the reckless destruction of the Sarawak jungle.

MCLM chief opts to believe PDRM propaganda overe Batu MP Tian Chua's record!
Yes, this post, much aided by a commenter calling himself DON, TO SHOW THE HYPOCRISY OF PEAOPLE's PARLIAMENT hostblogger--cum-MCLM Prez Haris Ibrahim.
I was truly amazed and angry that so-called "People's Parliament" blogger-cum-lawyer could turncoat so badly. In fact, merely reading the titles to his two posts would make anyone who is well-informed to shake his/her head in "disbelief". I won't even dignity this guy reproducing the two posts here/hear -- THE TWO LINKS WILL SUFFICE.
Tian Chua, have you been a bad, bad boy?

From henceforth, I am taking the liberty of using a well-informed Commenter there at Haris Ibrahim's post to "speak" as his views easily resonate with what I have been writing all along for the past one year-plus about Haris Ibrahim (RPK too) and Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (MCLM) and incidentally Haris' connection with Bersih2.0.
My esteemed readers are advised to check out the many comments at People's Parliament to get a "balanced" picture, but following are Don's and Desi's takes:):)

The same names, the same game, the same lines of defence, Haris is sitting next to God, nah, he is God, only well, second to RPK of course, Haris is committed to reforms, Haris is the next wonderful thing, 2nd only to RPK, to happen to Malaysian politics, blah, blah blah. All bloody excuses to enable RPK, Haris, etc., to bring down the present leadership of PKR, especially Anwar, so that RPK and Haris can dictate to PKR. The trouble with these people is that they are sooo predictable and unrelenting in the attempts in wanting to bring Pakatan down.
I always said, many, many times, Har! is, Zorr o and RPK are arse holes, this proves it. Again, I have said several times, Haris, together with RPK are working with BN, and are trojan horses, now this is the proof.
Surely there are other ways to get Tian Chua answer for the video. For Gods sakes, its 40 seconds of film, and by watching 40 seconds of film, Haris has already come to a conclusion. And no matter how Tian Chua defends himself, Haris has made sure that he has got public opinion on his side. To ensure maximum effect, he has got his minnows and side kicks to comment negatively about Tian Chua.
Haris knows that there are more effective ways of getting Tian Chua explain himself. But doing it that way, will not achieve Haris and the puppet master RPKs objectives and ulterior motives.
Tian Chua has given his life to fight for the benefit of others, that have brought about terrible consequences upon himself. RPK has, countless hit out at Tian Chua, saying a certain website is linked to Tian Chua, and that, that website is bending backwards to accommodate Tian Chua, I knew worse things will follow, and I guessed that Haris will be one doing the damage to Tian Chua, at RPKs bidding, and it seems that I was right.
All I have say is this: shame on you Haris. You formed MCLM with two members, you and RPK, one as chairman and other as President, to cause maximum damage to the reputations of Anwar, and now it seems to Tian Chua. You came into Bersih, now we know, as a trojan horse, and it would also seem that you have achieved your purpose, but the game is not over yet. You will get what is due to you.
Haslinah Yacob is the the first to see through your veil. Others will follow. I am eager to see the day when someone in the UK spits on RPKs face and calls him a coward. And you Haris, because you allowed yourself to be used, your turn will come too.
To all those who will write to defend Haris, I do respect your decision to do so. Just argue on the points th! at I hav e raised, dont be cowards like RPK and Haris and become comment snipers.
Enough said.

Don, I second most of what youve written here. I saw thru Haris and RPK long ago when they constantly n consistently condemned PKR and its leaders starting more than a year ago, hece my writing several articles at MChronicle rebutting him, Haris and MCLM,
I also asked Haris Ib to reessin from the Bersih2.0 Steering Committee the moment he took up post as secoid lieutenent to RPK, my Fac-Off opponent whom I also challenge to prove his false allegations against me. He maintained elegant silence, and I told him in one post hes both a coward and a liar.
Hari Ib only resigned his Bersih post recently, BUT HE WAS THE ONE WHO COMPROMISED BERSIHS NEUTRALITYT.
