The future battery

BY STEPHANIE LIOU

It sounds like something out of a cheesy science fiction movie, but thanks to new research by several Stanford scientists, transparent cell phones are one step closer to becoming a reality.

Several companies have successfully created partially transparent gadgets such as digital photo frames and cell phones with see-through keyboards. However, fully transparent e-book readers or cell phones have remained largely in the realm of conceptual art due to one last missing puzzle piece.

"If you want to make everything transparent, what about the battery?" said Yi Cui, an associate professor of materials science and engineering and of photon science at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, renowned for his work with batteries.

With graduate student Yuan Yang, who is the first author of the paper "Transparent lithium-ion batteries" in the July 25 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Cui set out to create a clear battery suitable for use in consumer electronics.

"I can make the battery more powerful, but I also want to make the battery look fancier," said Cui, who praised Yang for coming up with this unusual research idea.

Since key active materials in batteries cannot yet be made transparent or replaced with transparent alternatives, Yang and Cui realized that they had to find a way to construct a battery such that its nontransparent! compone nts were too small to be seen by the naked eye.

"If something is smaller than 50 microns, your eyes will feel like it is transparent," said Yang, because the maximum resolving power of the human eye is somewhere between 50 to 100 microns.

Yang and Cui devised a mesh-like framework for the battery electrodes, with each "line" in the grid being approximately 35 microns wide. Light passes through the transparent gaps between the gridlines; because the individual lines are so thin, the entire meshwork area appears transparent.

This was easier said than done. The pair finally came up with an ingenious three-step process that utilized low-cost, commonly available substances.

First, since regular materials such as copper or aluminum were out of the question, a transparent alternative had to be found. Yang and Cui settled upon a transparent, slightly rubbery compound known as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).

"PDMS is pretty cheap, and already being used in plastic surgery and contact lenses," said Yang. "But it is not conductive, so we had to deposit metals onto it to make it conductive."

To do so, PDMS was poured into silicon molds to create grid-patterned trenches. A metal film was evaporated over the trenches, creating a conductive layer.

The researchers then dropped a liquid slurry solution containing minuscule, nano-sized active electrode materials into the trenches.

Next, Yang developed a special transparent substance to be sandwiched between electrodes. He modified an existing gel electrolyte to make it serve double-duty as both an electrolyte and a separator. Since all of the materials used to make separators in regular batteries are nontransparent, this was a vital step.

By precisely placi! ng an el ectrolyte layer between two electrodes, one functional battery is created. Multiple layers can be added in order to create a larger and more powerful battery.

As long as the gridlines are matched accurately, transparency is maintained. Yang and Cui's light transmittance tests showed a 62 percent transparency in visible light, and approximately 60 percent transparency even with three full cells stacked on top of each other. The entire battery is also highly flexible.

Perhaps best of all, the transparent battery is less expensive than one might expect.

"Its cost could be similar to those of regular batteries," said Cui. "Especially if we use low cost metals as current collectors, there is no reason this cannot be cheap."

The only current limitation is that the transparent battery is only about half as powerful as comparably sized lithium-ion counterparts.

"The energy density is currently lower than lithium batteries," said Yang. "It is comparable to nickel-cadmium batteries right now."

Most laptops and cell phones are powered by lithium-ion batteries, while nickel-cadmium batteries are often found in cameras and other less energy-intensive devices.

Yang and Cui are optimistic that advancements in materials science will enable the improvement of the energy density of the transparent battery. The manufacturing process is definitely scalable, and there is potential for commercial application, said Cui, who has filed a patent for the battery.

But wait, one might ask what is the reason to have a transparent device, or even a transparent battery?

"It's very exciting for doing fundamental scientific research," said Cui. "You can study what is happening inside batteries since they ! are tran sparent now."

Grand contributions to science aside, though, there was definitely a bigger motivating force behind Yang and Cui's research.

"It just looks cool," said Cui. "I want to talk to Steve Jobs about this. I want a transparent iPhone!"

Yang's work is supported by the Stanford Graduate Fellowships Program in Science and Engineering. Funding for this research was provided by the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

Sangmoo Jeong, Liangbing Hu, Hui Wu and Seok Woo Lee, all of Stanford, also contributed to this research.

Najib: BN would have won Kelantan in 2004 if polls skewed - The Malaysian Insider

Najib stressed today that his administration was fully committed to electoral reform. file pic
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 Datuk Seri Najib Razak today shot down accusations that the countrys electoral process was unfair, and said that if Barisan Nasional (BN) could manipulate results they would have won Kelantan in 2004.

The PAS-run Kelantan government, an opposition stronghold, suffered a near defeat during the 2004 general elections when PAS won the state with a slim majority of just three seats.

If you think we (BN) can manipulate the ballot box, dont you think its also possible we could have come up with three extra votes? If you say the Election Commission (EC) is not transparent, if you say we manipulate votes ... we can do it but we have not done so.

There are fair elections in Malaysia, you should not doubt that, Najib said today during his speech to conclude the Malaysian Student Leaders Summit (MSLS) here.

The ruling BN coalition has garnered severe criticism over the way it handled the Bersih 2.0 rally, amid a long list of complaints over an unfair election process by Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and civil society groups. The international community, from Singapore to the UK, has criticised the governments handling of recent public dissent.

Najib stressed that his administration was fully committed to electoral reform in order to bring about an improvement to the current system.

Im committed to electoral reform. We will make sure there are no more phantom voters ... If the biometric system goes ahead, there will ! be no ch ance of phantom voters, he added.

The PM said he refuted allegations that there is no parliamentary democracy in Malaysia, before stressing that the only ones who determined the ruling government in Putrajaya was the electorate.

There are no guarantees for anyone in the general elections. There is no way to fix the ballot box, Najib said.

Bersih estimates that 50,000 people showed up at the July 9 rally for free and fair elections despite efforts to prevent it from taking place while police have said the number was closer to 6,000.

The protest turned chaotic when police fired tear gas and water cannon at thousands of demonstrators, resulting in nearly 1,700 arrests, scores injured and the death of ex-soldier Baharuddin Ahmad, 59.

The government has promised to investigate allegations of police brutality while the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) will hold a separate public inquiry into police conduct during the rally.

RCI judges three blind mice, says ex-Judge

A respected former senior judge has branded the three judges on the Teoh Beng Hock royal commission of inquiry (RCI) three blind mice for concluding that the political aide committed suicide despite lacking expert opinion.

Former High Court and Court of Appeal judge Datuk N. H. Chan said the commission had no business forming such an opinion as none of the experts it called upon gave the opinion that Teoh committed suicide.

He pointed out that this went against Section 45 of the Evidence Act 1950, which states that when a court has form an opinion on a point of science, the opinions of experts are relevant facts. Without any relevant fact, that is to say, without an opinion from an expert, a court is unable to form an opinion upon... the scientific point that Teoh Beng Hock took his own life. In this case, none of the experts gave the opinion that Teoh took his own life, Chan said in an essay sent to The Malaysian Insider.

The commissioners must not substitute their own opinion for that of the experts! Yet this was precisely what the RCI did! By assuming the mantle of a forensic psychiatric expert it came to the conclusion that Teoh took his own life.

He added that the finding that Teoh was driven to suicide after relentless questioning from Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers was also unfounded, and lamented the fact that the public still did not know how the political aide died.

The RCI unanimously ruled that Teoh, aide to Selangor executive councillor and Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, committed suicide as a resul! t of pre ssure from aggressive and continuous questioning by anti-graft officers.

The five-man panel wrapped up its report on June 15 after having heard testimony from 70 witnesses in its bid to unravel the mysterious circumstances behind Teohs death.

The 30-year-old DAP political aide was found dead on July 16, 2009 on the fifth-floor corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after he was questioned overnight by MACC officers at their then-Selangor headquarters on the 14th floor.

The coroners inquest had in January returned an open verdict ruling out both suicide and homicide some 18 months after Teohs death.

The government was then forced to establish the RCI, which first met in February, with two terms of reference: to probe how Teoh plunged to his death and to look into MACCs investigative methods.

Teohs family has rejected the commissions verdict and are currently mulling a judicial review of its findings.

Najib: Release of PSM 6 in accordance with rule of law

The prime minister said today that the decision to release the PSM 6 was made by the police based on “their observations.” — file pic

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak has insisted that the release of six Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) members from their Emergency Ordinance (EO) detention was done according to the due process of the law.

The prime minister told reporters today that the decision to release Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Devaraj Jeyakumar and five others at 5.30pm was made by the police based on “their observations.”

“We welcome it. It is up to the Attorney General to decide on further action. As a country, we hold to the rule of law,” the Umno president said after chairing an Umno supreme council meeting.

However, The Malaysian Insider understands that several younger leaders at the meeting that began at about 4pm had asked Najib to “rethink Jeyakumar’s detention.”

The six were initially held on June 25 with 24 others in the run-up to the July 9 Bersih rally for allegedly attempting to revive communism and waging war against the Agong.

Dr Jeyakumar began a hunger strike yesterday to protest the detention without trial under the EO, his wife Mohanarani Rasiah had said.

Nearly 2,000 others, who were arrested in the days leading up to and during the outlawed July 9 rally for free and fair elections, have been released.

But the continued detention of the six had garnered widespread criticism from opposition figures and human rights activists with regular candlelight vigils being held nationwide calling for their release.

The Najib administration has already suffered international criticism over its handling of the Bersih rally, with influential media such as the Guardian, Wall Street Journal and al-Jazeera taking stinging tones towards the government crackdown.

Police had dispersed tens of thousands of demonstrators calling for electoral reform on July 9 with tear gas and water cannons and arrested nearly 1,700 on the day itself, leaving scores injured and the husband of a PKR division leader dead.

The released detainees, popularly known as the EO6, are scheduled to speak to the press at 7.30pm tonight.

Reminds me of the matrix...

JANGAN beli kurma JORDAN RIVER, Malaysia negara munafik

Kurma menjadi produk tumpuan ketika Ramadhan.

The public declaration of the Malaysian Prime Minister and Minister of International Trade and Industrial that their country intends to pursue economic relations with Israel is another milestone in the development of trade with this continent.

Penafian Rosmah ditolak

Nicely photoshopped...wtf?

-tvsnews

Stop relying on government, Najib tells BN parties

"The govt is only for me, my darling and my friends ..." ?

Najib said today BN should use political avenues to help the public rather than resort to the current practice of pressuring the various ministries to act. — file pic

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak told his Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition today that it must work to solve problems faced by the public without resorting to government channels.

The prime minister said that under its new political model, the ruling coalition must strive to use political avenues to help the public rather than the current practice of pressuring the various ministries to act.

Najib said that “in the current landscape ... political parties can act through political channels” to request help from partners and “take the initiative to have programmes.”

His administration has been committed to trimming the budget deficit from a two-decade high of seven per cent in 2009 to 5.4 per cent this year but surging inflation — especially in urban centres where his coalition is weakest — has forced Putrajaya to rethink its timetable for subsidy cuts.

After hitting a two-year peak of three per cent in March, the consumer price index has continued to rise, hitting 3.5 per cent in June as the government increased fuel, electricity and sugar prices to prevent the subsidy bill from doubling to RM21 billion.

The Umno president is also expected to call for general elections soon despite his mandate only expiring in early 2013.

Both government and opposition lawmakers have said that Najib should announce an election budget for next year as sustaining subsidies continues to put a strain on the Treasury.

Pressure from hardline Malay ground to maintain Bumiputera quotas is also threatening the prime minister’s economic transformation programme that aims to double per capita income by 2020.

Observers believe a new five-year mandate will give Najib some breathing space to execute his economic reforms to move Malaysia out of the “middle-income trap,” which in turn, will allow him to ease the burden of subsidies on the budget.

Launching the BN Youth Home Owner Programme Exhibition (Hope) today, Najib said that such initiatives, which pulled together stakeholders such as developers, financial institutes and prospective homeowners, were an example of how “BN is capable of fulfilling the hopes of the public.”

Ministerial positions

  • I guess the either the entire MIC members nationwide or just Mr. Palanivel and his cronies would have gone to bed smiling happily after our PM said that Palanievel will be sworn in as a full minister by next week. I have nothing against Palanievel and dont know him personally but his close aid is a good friend of mine. I dont know if I should be excited about it or be more worried.

  • We are now in the 21st century and currently the nation is going through some very challenging time. The global economic is skewed, national debt is rising, some power brokers personal wealth is increasing exponentially but in general the people is getting poorer because of reduced purchasing power. At such a difficult time, we would expect the nation CEO to hire the best person to fill up any position and not appointing people based on skin color.

  • If I am a CEO of any organization, I would look for the best person to fill up vacancies. In the last 8 months, I have assisted my CEO in hiring 3 persons for our company and repeatedly my boss tells me, it is money well spent. I feel the same too because I played a significant role in bringing this 3 people over and skin color was not our criteria in hiring people. The last person that we hired was a real brilliant, brainy and beautiful (BBB) lass. Why did we do this?

  • We are answerable to the board. The board wants results and we have to gear ourselves in finding the right people to ensure that the whole company can meet the board expectation. Only a foolish man will look at skin color and not performance in hiring people as it would have back lash. Maybe in politics, it is different. Hiring the best man is not the way to do it. Malaysia truly boleh!
