To All Concern Malaysians

Today is a sad day for all Malaysians.

We worked and slave for the development of this country. Today we are deprived of our human rights to have a say "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH" to all the cheating, abusive manner and arrogance of the Election Commission. At every turn, we are been BULLIED into a corner. At every opportunity we are made a scapegoat for their failure. At our expenses they steal from us. Today when we want our voices to be heard we are TOLD TO SHUT UP AND BE SILENCE.

As Malaysians we are NOT SLAVES. We are ALL MALAYSIANS born under the same sky. We experience day and night. We experience happiness and sadness. We are not all perfect but our needs are the same.

In Malaysia today we have different laws for different people. Our lives are divided based on religion and race. We are bribed and courted when there is a need. When not wanted, we are condemned and abused.

Today we just want to have a say. Is that so difficult to understand and appreciate? Instead we are treated as OUTLAWS.

MALAYSIANS and ROYALTIES WHO HIDE BEHIND THEIR GOLDEN PALACES. GLANCE THROUGH THE LIST AND PRAY TELL ME WHICH GROUP STAND FOR ALL MALAYSIANS OF ALL RACES AND RELIGION.

Ask yourself this "WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR THE PRIME MINISTER AND HIS FAMILY MEMBERS TO HAVE A SUDDEN HOLIDAY, IF HE HAS DONE NO WRONG?" The excuse of seeing the POPE with two suitcases of CASH DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.

Today BLOOD WILL BE SHED in the hands of the authorities who refuses to LISTEN AND SEE that the people wants this country to be for ALL MALAYSIANS OF ALL RACES AND RELIGION.

TODAY, WE DO NOT HAVE THE POLICE, ARMY, JUDICIAL, ROYALTIES, CRONIES, MONEY, SILAT WARRIORS AND MAT REMPITS TO SAVE THIS ! COUNTRY.

TODAY WE HAVE ONLY OURSELVES TO SAVE THIS COUNTRY. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH WE ARE NO LONGER SCAPEGOATS. WE ARE MALAYSIANS.

Despite obstacles, Bersih will at Stadium Merdeka at 2.00pm...

Negotiations with the authorities have broken down and Bersih 2.0 is maintaining that its rally will be at Stadium Merdeka at 2pm tomorrow.

In a statement late this evening, the Bersih 2.0 steering committee said the authorities have put obstacle after obstacle to frustrate any form of cooperation.

Having faced half-hearted offers of stadiums, arrogance regarding meetings as well as denial of permits, arrests, detentions and so much more.

We feel that we have done all that is humanly possible to demonstrate sincerity and good faith in dealing with the government - but we have only been met with reversed decisions and stone walls, said the committee.

The statement comes soon after Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said that the movement is free to hold its rally anywhere other than Kuala Lumpur. However, the minister's statement just comes hours after the Selangor Sultan decreed that no rally can be held in his state, leaving Bersih 2.0 with little options.

There has been a massive police mobilisation in Kuala Lumpur as authorities plan a water-tight cordon around the city centre where the stadium is located. Bersih 2.0 is adamant on using Stadium Merdeka due to its historical and symbolic significance, but the authorities want the movement to use another stadium.

Below is Bersih 2.0's statement in full:

2pm, July 9, Stadium Merdeka:

Mala! ysia's m oment of truth. Malaysians from all walks of life have travelled a very long road to reach this defining point in our nation's history.

With less than 24 hours to our intended peaceful gathering, our resolve to walk the last, most difficult mile as one united people in pursuit of clean and fair elections and a better Malaysia for all is firmer than ever.

Our reason for gathering is pure and simple to demand the electoral roll be cleaned, that the postal voting system be reformed, that indelible ink be used, a minimum 21 day campaign period be instated, free and fair access to media for all be provided, public institutions be strengthened, and for corruption as well as dirty politics to be stopped.

The authorities have put obstacle after obstacle where they only needed to provide sincere cooperation to win the trust and confidence of the people.
Having faced half hearted offers of stadiums, arrogance regarding meetings as well as denials of permits, arrests, detentions and so much more, we feel that we have done all that is humanly possible to demonstrate sincerity and good faith in dealing with the government but we have only been met with reversed decisions and stone walls.

There are no walls however, that will arrest the advance of the cause of peace and justice. Come the 9th of July, we will uphold our constitutional right to converge peacefully on Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur.

No government agency has any right whatsoever to prevent Malaysians from exercising their freedom of movement and access to our capital city. No threat or intimidation can overturn this fundamental truth.

Malaysians have now seen for themselves the degree of paranoia and lack of principled leadership that seems to have gripped the government. It is thus all the more imperative that patriotic Malaysians rise now and take this stand together to save Malaysia from slipping further in! to this insane darkness.

Since the beginning of Bersih 2.0, we have witnessed nothing but the utmost bravery and commitment to peace and justice demonstrated by ordinary Malaysians from every walk of life. Inspired by this example, the Bersih 2.0 leadership reiterates our own unyielding commitment to our shared cause, and to being at Stadium Merdeka at 2pm tomorrow.

We will meet at the carpark, and trust that the doors will be opened for us.
This is Malaysia's single most important defining moment in recent history, and we are fully confident that the rakyat will heed the call to safeguard the principles Malaysia was founded on and together ensure that we pass down to our children a nation that is just, democratic and united in love for one another.

Excerpts:

Analysts say the Bersih campaign could help the political opposition.

"The opposition parties have jumped on this bandwagon because they would
be direct beneficiaries of electoral reform," said Ibrahim Suffian,
director of the Merdeka Center, an independent polling firm in Kuala
Lumpur.

Describing Bersih's demands as "perfectly normal in terms of what's
expected in a functional democracy," Mr. Ibrahim said that if large
numbers of protesters turned out Saturday, it could slow the
government's momentum after a recent series of by-election victories.

"I think that is the deeper concern: that a show of protest, a show of
force by the opposition and NGOs demanding reforms from the government,
could sway undecided people to feel that the government is not doing
enough," he said.

Ong Kian Ming, a political analyst at UCSI University, said that the
rally came at an "opportune time" for the opposition and that a violent
crackdown on the protesters could be "a game changer" in the coming
elections.

Sultan Selangor seru Melayu bersatu padu

Pemimpin2 UMNO terkejut titah nasihat DYMM Agong...

Kings independence surprises Umno leaders, say sources

Whose nadir?

By Farida Jivamala Ibrahim

Najib, you had hoped, you and your minions, that the atrocities committed against ordinary, decent and innocent people would bring them to their nadir their worst moment, their moment of least hope. But its backfired on you.

It is your nadir, Najib. Not ours. The more abuse you allow hurled at the rakyat who want a good government, the more those divisive slurs, the stronger the rakyat become. The more you allow freedom of speech and action to be stifled, the more they will speak out and do what is necessary for oppression to end.

Ethnic groups are coming together like never before. People are closing their eyes to status, race and religion and opening their hearts to one another. They have learnt to trust again, realizing the real party that has been shredding the fabric of unity and respect all this time. The walls you allowed to be erected are fast coming down.

The internet blossoms now with new and fervent writers, many of them so young, whose openness, passion, steadfastness and writing gifts this nation should be proud to acknowledge and applaud.

Freedom has finally found its voice. Courage has finally found its people.

Everywhere, people are awakening teenagers, adolescents, young and old. I keep hearing of 18-,17-,15-year-olds wanting to step forward. They have found new dreams. They see in the distance the fruition of a better country and are willing to give their all for reforms to be birthed.

It will come a free and fair country where we can stand tall among the nations and know there is a future for all.

And that glorious future can include you, Najib if you can get out of your time warp and Hitlerian mentality, and get Perkida, Wataniah, Mat Rempit army, Perkasa, silat groups etc to see reason.

You know, I went to court the other day about 8.30am, to give support to Murugan the last man standing. I was surprised at the number of Malay youths present at the complex, almost a hundred, I would say. They were giving support to the Datuk T trio, holding placards which proclaimed they loved them. Love porno-video makers?

I could not stay for Murugans session which was rescheduled to take place at 11.30 am. I walked out of the court complex at about 11am and saw those youths still there, a few possibly even as young as 13 or 14. They were standing around, sitting on the steps, doing nothing. I also saw a sea of gleaming motorbikes in the parking lot.

I wanted to ask some of them why they werent in school or college or working at that hour. I looked at one youngster, wondering whether it was he I should speak to. He looked back at me, and there was something in his eyes that made me keep my silence.

That day I had many troubled thoughts. All I could think of was the waste the waste of young potential, the brainwashing of gullible minds, perhaps even the poison of money doled out?

Why have these youths been brought down to this state of idleness?

Who in the end will rescue our young Malays from their wayward ways and dependency syndrome and give them something fresh and real and true to hold on to, something that will help them gain self-respect and esteem and worth?

Truly, no one has done a greater disservice to the Malay community, damaged the young, fed them insecurities, robbed them of self-esteem and self-respect than those who want an eternal perpetuation of their own position and power.

Please let our young grow before it is too late and! they le ad permanently damaging lives.

I am sure there are some people in the police force, on the bench, in the MACC, in SB,etc. whose conscience bothers them because they see the atrocities and think they cannot do anything. They are decent, they understand and want a better nation but they live in straitjackets, needing their jobs.

The time is now, if they should ever want things to get better. There is a choice, albeit a hard one. To say, No moreor continue to be dominated and be devalued as people, having the humanity in them slowly stripped away.

Najib, you bungled big-time. All you should have done was agreed to the Bersih rally, the Perkasa rally, the Khairy rally because that is democracy, never mind the purposes of each.

Instruct that each march occur at different times, and dont forget Bersih set their date and time and venues before the others. Have the police on hand to protect the marchers and apprehend any agent provocateur bent on disturbing and disrupting the peace, and when July 9 comes to an end, positive things would have been said about you. And you would have taken that first small step towards redemption.

Instead, you get the police to carry out your unreasonable orders and they get the bad name. I feel sorry for the police, so many good people there having to do bad things for you.

Ive ceased being angry with you, Najib. Ive ceased feeling disdain for Khairy, Hishamuddin, Rais, Muhyddin, Mahathir, Ibrahim Ali, Nazri and others recruited to spread hate and cause fear.

Why? We often hear this saying, If you do the same thing over and over again, and expect different results, thats insanity.

Look at where our nation has been heading down the years? See what you have been allowing directly or through your minions! The rakyat are bullied, threatened while you just rail and rant. The rakyat are constantly intimidated while you twist innocent words and actions, having the media print falsehood to raise the racist and religious temperature to new! obnoxio us highs. You allow the police to arrest Bersih individuals for merely wearing those t-shirts but Umno and Perkasa with their threats of violence, bloodshed, arson and unlawful behaviour get off scot-free.

And now, what is most incomprehensible is that in your total fear of the rakyat whom you are required to defend and protect, you make Yellow, the colour of royalty, a kotor concept.

You do these over and over again and yet expect different results? You do these over and over again and think somewhere along the way people will grow to respect and love you, obey and applaud you? If that isnt insanity, what is?

You have a choice. Call off your police and FRU and the army and SB. If they have orders to shoot, the bloodshed that flows is not that of an enemy of the state but of innocent people who want a future for our country, the citizenry of this country! That is betrayal of the highest order!

Why is it so difficult for you to comprehend that Bersih 2.0 is not about taking over government but about free and clean elections? That is so clear. The more you resist, the more we suspect so much of unethical moves are being done in preparation for GE13 and so now because you are being stalemated you have to resort to bestial and barbaric ways. Thus the fury.

In days of yore, many kings walked out of their palaces to sit in the public square to meet their subjects, hear cases and deliver judgment. That has drastically changed today. Walls and guards keep people away from their King and walls and guards keep their King inside.

Subjects want to meet their Ruler. Subjects want to hand over important matters for the Ruler to consider. Kings are not just figureheads. They have a crucial role to play in nation-building. And no one has the right to stop subjects who want to appeal to their King.

Najib, you may go on in this incomprehensible, reprehensible way. Thats your choice. But in the end there is always the day of reckoning for each of us each of us have to be finally a! ccountab le to our Creator.

For now, as July 9 looms, know that people are not afraid.

Here is a likely scenario I hope you will read and think through with compassion:

In his little village, 75-year-old Pak Mat rises from his prayer mat and steps out onto the veranda. He looks out to a dawn that is breaking and reflects on the significance of the day. In a few hours he will be there to march for free and fair elections. .

Mak Su joins him and he sees the tears before she hastily wipes them away. Dont go, she says imploringly. What if they beat you up, break your legs, detain you?

I have to, he replies sombrely. Its gone too far. If I dont do something now, therell be no hope for our country and our childrens future. It is my duty to stand up against all the wrongs.

Pak Mat slips into the bedroom where his five-year-old grandchild sleeps. He brushes the little ones cheek gently with a feathery kiss and hurries out to the veranda again.

He puts on his sandals , picks up his walking stick and looks at Mak Su. She is weeping.

What if they shoot you what if you are killed? she says brokenly, her weeping giving way to heart-wrenching cries.

Pak Mat takes his wifes hands in his, and with hope and faith in his heart says, I will be back. God is on our side.

Joint Statement by Global BERSIH 2.0 on 8 July 2011

Joint Statement by Global BERSIH 2.0 on 8 July 2011,

with updated list of BERSIH hotspots around the world

The BERSIH 2.0 Global Solidarity Network strongly supports the BERSIH 2.0 rally for Clean and Fair Elections in Malaysia on the 9th of July 2011.

We urge all Malaysians abroad to unite in solidarity with our Malaysian brothers and sisters at home by joining BERSIH 2.0 walks and other events in cities across the world (see below for complete list). Malaysians have the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech in keeping with international human rights norms.

As citizens, we demand free and fair elections, which provide the foundation a better, more democratic Malaysia. We support BERSIH 2.0s eight points of electoral reform and call in addition for a ninth: suffrage for Malaysians residing abroad.

We, ordinary Malaysian citizens around the world, are supporting BERSIH 2.0 because we can and because we should. We believe that the future of Malaysia belongs to all our children and that together we can ensure that the legacy we leave them is a beautiful and just one. We are speaking out because we live in open democracies where the freedoms of speech and of peaceful assembly and the right to demonstrate are the norm rather than the exception.

As is the case with the rally in Kuala Lumpur, we intend to gather peacefully and with dignity, and we shall do so without fear of water cannon, tear gas, police intimidation and brutality, or arbitrary arrest for dressing in yellow. Wherever we may be, we shall be wearing yellow T-shirts and carrying yellow banners, balloons and placards with peaceful slogans in support of clean and fair elections in Malaysia. We shall be bringing our family members both young and old.

Together with Malaysians all over the world, we urge the Najib government to support electoral reform. Clean and fair elections are essential to developing a mature and open democ! racy, an d to safeguard the integrity of our nation for future generations.

We call on the Prime Minister to respect DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di-Pertuan Agongs advice to His Majestys government to show prudence and fairness in carrying out the duties entrusted to it by the Malaysian people. We also urge the federal government and the Inspector-General of Police to follow this advice by releasing all those detained in connection with BERSIH 2.0, and stop the ongoing, systematic harassment of BERSIH 2.0 supporters.

It is not too late for the Prime Minister to fulfil his duties and responsibilities in a manner that becomes his office and to allow this gathering to proceed peacefully in recognition of the will of the people. With the proper cooperation of all government agencies, we are confident the gathering will be nothing more and nothing less than a peaceful expression of a just and legitimate cause.

The eyes of the world are now on the Prime Minister and his government, in this pivotal moment that will surely define his legacy in the eyes of Malaysians as well as citizens and governments the world over. We urge him to rise to the occasion.

See How They Cheat

To all those gullible people out there who think that the government is no worse than any other: watch this and tell me if we have free and fair elections or not.

Support Bersih In Its Moment Of Need

Support Bersih In Its Moment OfNeed

Dato Ambiga Sreenevasan

I would like to thank all Bersih supporters for your kind outpouring of support thus far. Bersih 2.0 has come a long way in carrying the aspirations of the rakyat for clean and fair elections, and it is the rakyat themselves above all who have made this possible.

We have faced massive obstacles, vilification and oppression, but inspired by the bravery of the Malaysian people, managed to overcome them all thus far.

Like many other Steering Committee members, it has been challenging personally to face threats of murder, gang rape and various other violence directed against myself and others. Nonetheless, we understand our responsibility in holding the line on behalf of all of you who want nothing more than a clean electoral system and a better Malaysia.

Malaysians both at home and abroad have already been called to make so many sacrifices, so while we do not aspire to add to your burdens, we are writing this in the hopes that you can spare some support.

The cost of our campaign increases every day, complicated by constant harassment by the authorities. In addition to our operational expenses listed below that are necessary to organising our gathering successfully in a peaceful and secure environment, we find ourselves having to raise money to bail staff at the secretariat of Bersih 2.0 that have been unjustly arrested and are now facing charges that make no sense whatsoever. Having key staff detained will cripple our operations in devastating ways.

Malaysia: UN rights office concerned at reported crackdown ahead of planned protests

From UN News Centre

5 July 2011 The United Nations human rights office today voiced concern about measures being taken by authorities in Malaysia, including restricting freedom of expression, ahead of a peaceful demonstration scheduled for this Saturday.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has recently been receiving reports of a crackdown, including harassment, intimidation, arrests and threats, targeting members of the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih).

According to reliable sources, at least 150 people have been summoned, arrested or charged, including a number of opposition members of Parliament, Rupert Colville, OHCHRs spokesperson in Geneva, told reporters.

The authorities have also reportedly arrested activists simply for possessing Bersihs distinctive yellow T-shirts and campaign pamphlets, he added.

We are very concerned about the various measures that are being taken by the authorities to restrict freedom of expression in Malaysia, including preventive detention, and the Governments decision to reportedly declare Bersih an unlawful organization, said Mr. Colville.

We call on the authorities to release all those being detained for peacefully exercising their freedom of expression.

Peludah Warna : Pak Samad

Kuasa gusar kini menggelegak murka;
warna kuning diisytihar racun terbisa.
Diragutnya baju-T segeram tenaga
dan diumum itulah busana bahaya.

Tapi, kita jahit semula perca kain,
menjadikannya panji terindah dan tulen.
Warna kuning yang teramat tenang dan syahdu
kita kembalikan damai ke dalam qalbu.

Kini cahaya mentari mungkin diramas
dan sinar kuningnya juga mungkin dicantas.
Memanglah mereka kini peludah warna
sedang menghimpun lendir kahak sebanyaknya.

Kerana nikmat amat lama berkuasa,
kuasa pun seolah menjadi hartanya.

Dirty treatment for a clean cause

Shamefully desperate. This best describes Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, who is going all out to finish off election watchdog Bersih 2.0.

Applying all the dirty tactics in the book, Najib sought the help of his cousin-cum-Home Minister, Hishammuddin Hussein, and got Bersih 2.0 declared as an illegal outfit.

Then, there were claims that Bersih 2.0 chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan was the beneficiary of illegal funding including from controversial currency speculator George Soros.

It did not end there. The police claimed it found a bag full of the yellow T-shirts with the word Bersih on it, Molotov cocktails and other weapons days ahead of the July 9 rally.

Still unhappy with the peoples show of support towards the rally, Najib has ordered the police to apply for a court order and arrest the 91 individuals including Ambiga, Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang should they set foot in certain parts of Kuala Lumpur.

All that could be done to tarnish the image of Bersih 2.0 and cast doubt on its Walk for Democracy rally was being done by Najib and his team. Yet, all that failed to brainwash the people who staunchly support Bersih 2.0.

Utterly desperate, Najibs last attempt was to instruct the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to interfere, which the former dutifully did, urging that the rally due tomorrow not happen on the streets because of the chaos it might lead to.

Bersih 2.0 respectfully abided by the Kings request to not take to the streets, not realising that the powers that be were not trustworthy.

Bersih 2.0 agreed to hold the rally in a closed-door environment and identified Stadium Merdeka as the preferred venue, due to its historical significance, that is, being the site where the countrys independence was proclaimed by the co! untry fi rst prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman.

But the Stadium Merdeka management refused to entertain that request from Bersih 2.0, giving reasons that the stadium was already booked for July 9.

Passing the buck

While the tug-of-war goes on between Bersih 2.0 and Stadium Merdeka, Najib watches from afar, pleased that he succeeded in giving Ambiga the run-around for a venue, passing the buck of dealing with an illegal organisation to the police.

The latest scenario has the Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar telling Bersih 2.0 to seize the golden opportunity offered by the government for the rally to take place indoors but best they do it outside Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia is a big country. Why do you want to hold it in the heart of the city which could potentially become chaotic? Please listen to my advice, Ismail said at a press conference at the federal police headquarters at Bukit Aman.

Meanwhile, Ambiga is adamant that the rally will take place at Stadium Merdeka.

So intense has the situation become that with the peoples support towards the Walk for Democracy growing by the day, so has Najibs fear of not enjoying control over Putrajaya, come the 13th general election.

The police crackdown, the clampdown on public transport to prevent supporters of the rally pouring in to lend support plus a series of manipulation adopted by Najib have all failed to scare Ambiga from going ahead with the Walk for Democracy. This former president of the Malaysian Bar remains focused on the objective behind the rally, which is to reform the electoral system.

Provoking the people into street riots is not Ambigas agenda. To make sure the nation is free of corrupted influences during elections is what Bersih 2.0 is working so hard to achieve.

But then, as history has shown, fighting for the truth is always painful and difficult. The case with Bersih 2.0 is no different. Its office was raided and the now symbolic yellow T-shirts seized.

!

Still , Najib was not satisfied. He turned to instilling fear in the people, which was done with the arrest and re-arrest of the Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) activists under the Emergency Ordinance, one of them being Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj, the good doctor who dethroned veteran politician S Samy Vellu from his Sungai Siput constituency seat in the 2008 general election.

A humble Malaysian poet, A Samad Said who supported Ambigas call for a reformed electoral system was also taken to task over a poem he dedicated to Bersih 2.0 and its efforts to weed out manipulation at the polls.

Using the monarch

Still, the vendetta against Bersih 2.0 was far from over. Threats to her life aside, the well-intentioned Ambiga became the target of hate by the powers that be. To the ultra-Malay group Perkasa and Umno Youth, they had the task of foiling the July 9 rally and that too by holding counter-rallies of their own on the same day of the rally.

While Umno Youth has pulled out from organising a rally, Perkasa mouthpiece Ibrahim Ali who is infamous for being crude and brute, says his rally is on and that too at Stadium Merdeka, failing which it will take place at Stadium Titiwangsa, that too for free since Perkasa is an NGO and is not flush with cash.

Despite all the damage done to Bersih 2.0 and the July 9 rally, the people however are in no mood to swallow whatever venom the government servant Radio Televisyen Malaysia has been spitting against the Walk for Democracy.

That too failed to garner Najib the desired results. Now completely desperate, he made the final move, that of asking the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to come to his rescue.

So on the night of July 3, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin sent out a message that street demonstrations bring more harm than good, albeit the original intention being good.

Trusting Najib to handle the rally problem in the best possible way, the monarch urged the Barisan Nasional government to carry! out eve rything that is entrusted to it by the people in a just and wise manner.

The problem is that it is this very mandate of the people that for 53 years had been sacrificed for personal agendas by these so-called leaders.

Now that the Bersih 2.0 clarion call has been made for changes to the electoral system and the people too have agreed, the insecurity facing Najib and the rest of the BN leaders might just turn fatal.

Dealing with the Walk for Democracy in such a seedy manner has earned Najib nothing but disgust as far as the Human Rights Watch (HRW) is concerned.

Its deputy director for Asia, Phil Robertson, said none of the demands made by Bersih 2.0 warranted a spate of arrests including using the draconian Internal Security Act (ISA) and deploying the army on the day of the rally.

Reputation tarnished

He said the governments clampdown on the rally oganisers and supporters was likely to tarnish Malaysias reputation within the United Nations Human Rights Council.

For some reason, the Malaysian government has decided to make this rally a test of its power. It almost seems like it has a screw loose. It is very clear that this is a campaign of intimidation, Robertson was quoted by FMT as saying.

Robertson dismissed accusations that Bersih was politically motivated due to the support from opposition parties. He stressed that even a member of a political party still has the rights of a citizen.

The issue here is of freedom of peaceful assembly. If a non-governmental organisation and a political party decide to walk hand-in-hand that is their right. The government is just churning out excuse after excuse to stop the rally in the hope that the people will believe at least one of them, he said.

Robertson said Malaysia is bound by Article 21 of the United Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR) to allow this rally.

Article 21 states that the will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of the government: this will ! shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.

Said Robertson: Bersih is asserting its right under Article 21 and that right should be respected.

Does all this mean anything to Najib? Or is the BN way of rigging the polls the only way it dares attempt?

That then sums up Ambigas determination to carry on with the rally tomorrow.

Our first and foremost responsibility is to our future and our children, and we have resolved that they shall inherit a nation ruled not by fear, but by the principles of justice, she said.

Perak police detain 41 activists over Bersih rally

FREE MALAYSIAKINI - Perak police detain 41 activists over Bersih rallyWelcome to Perak police detain 41 activists over Bersih rally
Thursday, July 07 @ 10:52:26 CDT

Perak police have detained 41 people in several districts in the state from last Friday on suspicion of involvement in the assembly planned for Saturday.

Perak police chief Skukri Dahalan said among those detained were several opposition representatives, individuals and a religious teacher.

"They were held for gathering and producing and distributing T-shirts and leaflets on the illegal assembly," he told a news conference after the Perak police's monthly gathering here today.

He said they were detained in Sungai Siput, Kuala Kangsar, Batu Gajah and Ipoh and had been freed on police bail.

He reminded members of the public not to get involved in the illegal assembly, saying police would not tolerate those who were adamant on going ahead with the activity.

Are police waging war against the Agong?

'Who are the communists - the rakyat or Umnoputra? They are doing what Mao Zedong had done by clamping down on the rakyat.'

DAP: Continued clampdown an affront to Agong

Swipenter: The Umno regime and PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) must immediately desist from harassing Bersih 2.0 supporters and release all those detained under the Emergency Ordinance immediately now that the Agong has spoken and a compromise has been reached.

The Agong's consent in meeting S Ambiga and two others and the go-ahead given by Najib to have the rallyin a stadium is nothing short of acknowledging the legitimacy of Bersih 2.0.

Unless of course, there are other forces opposed to PM Najib Razak and the Agong and/or some kind of a power struggle is playing out behind the scenes and Bersih 2.0 is being used as a convenient scapegoat to mask the power struggle. This happened to Umno in the mid-1980s under the early years of the Mahathir administration.

Abasir: I was stuck in traffic for an hour during which time I cursed Najib and his gang of crooks for this blatant abuse of state machinery. I am sure other road users felt the way I did. I am also sure that all of this BN-engineered hardship, waste of expensive petrol and time, and colossal loss of productivity will translate into votes.

I urge Najib to continue with this lunacy. It will be his road to destruction.

Ipoh2: It seems that despite the agreement to move the rally to a stadium, Najib/Umno/BN is being nasty and still persisting in preventing the rally from taking place.

Or at the very least, to drastically reduce the number of people attending. This is the result of dealing in good faith with two-faced snakes.

Quigonbond: The king has already proclaimed that Bersih 2.0 has good intentions. How could anything with good intentions be deemed illegal?

Further, Najib has agreed for Bersih 2.0 to gather at a stadium, so why t! he hypoc risy of continued clampdowns onBersih 2.0? It looks like the Najib is confused, and his administration is in disarray over this matter.

S.citizen: From what is happening, it is the police who are waging a war against our beloved king. Their behaviour is really disgusting.

They have no respect for our constitution and the rule of law. I have lost all the respect for them. Najib, be a man of ethics and practise what you preach.

Muak: "Polis sudah derhaka kepada Yang DiPertuan Agong!" There shouldn't be any more crackdown after the king has called for the government and Bersih 2.0 to meet.

The king has also met up with Bersih 2.0 and has acknowledged the movement's concerns.

A regime that says one thing and does another needs to go. A regime that allows Ibrahim Ali to question and challenge the king has to go.

A regime that manufactures 'evidence' to frame its citizens does not deserve to be in power. A regime that does not heed to calls of the very people that put it in power has to be voted out of office.

DannyLoHH: A police force that does not up hold the constitution, a police force that does not respect rule of law, and a police force that arrest woman for having a yellow badge in her pocket with message that call for clean and fair elections, is not a police force of a democratic state.

The police force has gone way overboard, it should be blatantly clear now that there is a dire need for the IPCMC (Independent Police Complaints and Misconducts Commission) to be set up.

Meluat: Indeed we are now a police state. But the rakyat who want change must persist. Wear and carry anything yellow.

They are trying to use scare tactics on Bersih but please remember they are the scared one. The insecurities are mounting hence all these extreme measures.

Chuath: So does anything Najib says really matter then? This is not unexpected. We do not have high expectations th! at the p olice will act according to the law.

May87: Malaysians, we have to continue to unite to make our stand and our voice to be heard that such blatant ignorance to proper rule of law will not be tolerated. Malaysians shall continue to unite to push for a fully-flourished democracy, not the dictatorship we seem to be living in now.

MyMalaysia_4c4: Who are the communists now - the rakyat or Umnoputra? They are doing what Mao Zedong had done by clamping down the rakyat.

Just imagine, to the extend of arresting one who had a Bersih 2.0 badge in her bag and those who wear yellow. Isn't yellow the colour of the Agong? Is Umno waging a war against the Agong?

Army's simulation exercise: 'Disperse, or we'll shoot'

David Dass: This is unreal. "Disperse or we will shoot." Is this rehearsal simply designed to frighten would be demonstrators from demonstrating?

The king has proposed a solution. The PM appeared to have accepted the king's proposal. And the problem was resolved. The stand-off was averted.

But now the government says Bersih is an illegal organisation, the police say that no permit will be given to the them as they do not meet existing criteria and the stadium officials say that they will not allow the stadium to be used.

Why is the king's proposal already accepted by the PM not accepted by the rest. We would show disrespect to the king if we suggest that he participated in a ruse to induce Bersih to announce acceptance of his suggestion.

We must accept that the king was sincere. We must accept that the PM meant it when he accepted the proposal. So what has gone wrong?

Anonymous_3del: It will be a sad day for this country if a standing army is being deployed to kill fellow citizens on the orders of a corrupt and desperate regime out to muzzle the people's dissent against election malpractices of a brazenly biased Election Commission.

My understanding of th! e sacred duty of the armed forces is to protect the nation against external threats and enemies.

Are we plunging into the level of some tyrannical banana states where the army becomes a cat's paw to carry out the despots' wishes to cling to power by killing kith and kin?

The FRU and police force are already known to be brutal in their handling of peaceful assemblies.

What now with the army ordered to use live bullets on unarmed civilians? I hope the authorities are merely calling their bluff. Otherwise we will descent into a failed state.

Tel: What is the government trying to prove by having such an exercise during such a time? What do they mean by 'we will shot'? Are they warning us, the rakyat? Are they trying to create Middle East-type tensions in Malaysia ? Or are they just plain stupid?

BTN: I believe that all this signs point towards one thing only and that is change is imminent and cannot be stopped anymore. The government who professed to the world that they practice democracy is actually bullshitting as long as they are secured as government.

These stupid idiots are so afraid to lose. Winning and losing is normal in a healthy democracy and if there is nothing to hide, there should not be any fear of losing.

P Dev Anand Pillai: In 1969, a group led by then Umno Youth chief Harun Idris was allowed to go amok and now we have the second generation of Umno leaders ready to use the army to shoot at civilians.

This regime has come to a point that it is ready to kill its own people, and it is beyond redemption.

It is now up to the people to massively vote against it and ensure that no other Southeast Asian immigrants who have been given IC cards are able to vote.

Massive rigging will take place and we have to capture this on video to pass on to the election watchdogs of the world and to the United Nations to show how elections are rigged in Malaysia.

The moment the army has been given instruction! s to sho ot, we can't reason with this government anymore.

Anonymous_4196: I appeal to the army and police, don't kill innocent rakyat. We are not going out there to cause chaos.

There is no need to threaten the rakyat. Violence has no place here. The rakyat are assembling peacefully for the betterment of Malaysia. It is for your children and our children's future.

Dood: I feel like a Palestinian now.

TIPU PRESIDEN UMNO/APCO: BETUL-BETUL PANDY KUTTY

Mengapakah ahli-ahli UMNO/APCO sanggup menipu presiden mereka sendiri?

Najib melalak tapak perhentian teksi Pasir Puteh dijual tanpa mengemukakan sebarang bukti sahih. Cakap ikut sedap mulut sahaja.

Education Ministry issues form to monitor staff

The Education Ministry has issued a form ordering its heads of departments to name officers, teachers, and staff who may attend illegal rallies this weekend.

NONEThe form is titled 'Borang Pemantauan Penlibatan Pegawai/Guru dalam Perhimpunan Haram atau Gerakan Yang Mengancam Keselamatan Negara' (form to monitor the participation of officers, teachers and staff in illegal gatherings or movements which may disrupt national security).

Heads of departments are required to fill in the particulars of the person involved, including name, identity card number, address of the institution and its phone number.

It's understood the form is mainly directed at staff attending to the Bersih 2.0 rally.

After completing the form, all forms are to be returned to the Education Ministry director-general's office either by fax or mail.

Barred from participating

The ministry's director-general, Abd Ghafar Mahmud had issued a circular dated June 30, in barring officers, teachers, lecturers, staff and students from participating in the Coalition of Free and Fair Elections Bersih 2.0.

NONEAbd Ghafar (left) in addressing all Education Ministry division directors, state education department directors, Teachers Training Institute directors and Matriculation Colleges directors have asked their staff and students from being present to the rally which is called "Walk for Democracy".

The director-general claims that police have classified this as an illegal assembly and would lead to riots, demonstrations and internal conflict.

"All officers and staff under the Education Minis! try and students in these institutions are prohibited in attending or participating in the rally by the illegal organisation Bersih on any days or events organised by them," he said.

Round 2 of tug-of-wills goes to Bersih

by

The ongoing tug-of-wills between Bersih and the government turned this week into a game of feint-and-maneuver in which the first round appeared to go to the government, mainly because of the latter’s orneriness.

But the pendulum has swung back Bersih’s way because of its decision, announced late yesterday, that the NGO won’t be swayed in its determination to hold its rally – peacefully, it has always emphasised – at the Merdeka Stadium this Saturday.

Bersih had responded in good faith to the king’s intervention early this week that was aimed at heading off a confrontation between the electoral reform pressure group and its adversaries – Perkasa and the police.

Bersih took the royal hint and requested for an audience to seek the king’s advice.

azlanPresumably, at the behest of the constitutional monarch who granted the audience on Tuesday, Bersih called off its street rally scheduled for July 9, opting instead for a gathering in a stadium on the same day.

It must be recalled that the government had long urged Bersih to hold its rally in a stadium.

But Prime Minister Najib Razak decided yesterday – in a move that typified his shiftiness on matters of principle – to pussyfoot on that earlier call and pass the buck of responsibility for approval of the gathering to the police.

To be sure, Bersih does not need a police permit to hold its gathering. That right is implicit in the Merdeka Constitution.

An arbitrary overlay of repressive legislation, passed during Umno-BN’s stultifying domination of Parliament, had come to shroud the freedom of speech and assembly guarantees in the Merdeka Constitution.

A return to the bedrock guarantees of that constitution is what the entire reform movement in Malaysia, now 13 years in gestation, is ultimately driving towards.

stadium merdeka 041208 03Which is why Bersih’s decision to hold its much-travailed rally at the Merdeka Stadium, where the independence of the country was proclaimed on Aug 31, 1957, is of momentous significance.

By the choice of location for its rally, by the meaning and significance of its reform agenda, Bersih has regained the initiative it seemingly lost in the gap between its deference to the king and the Najib administration’s apparent desire to play fast and loose with its word.

In an ever-fluid situation, Bersih has regained the momentum it had built up until the king, employing the unifying symbolism of his office, interjected to head off a looming confrontation between the pressure group and Perkasa, with the police in the role of supposed neutral-turned-repressive partisan.

Ball in government’s court

In this weeks’ old battle of serve and return between Bersih and its adversaries which has revolved round the question of whether the pressure group could hold its rally peacefully, a notional moral ledger had opened up whereby both Bersih and its interlocutors had sought to score points before an appraising public.

When Perkasa and its chief, Ibrahim Ali, fulminated against the rally and threatened dire consequences, Bersih tallied up a high marks on that ledger.

Repressive detentions by the police and asinine pronouncements by Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein only served to inflate Bersih’s moral score.

But when the king interjected with a plea for moderation, Bersih’s trajectory felt a crimp, but it recovered by gallantly abiding by His Majesty’s behest.

Bersih immediately shifted its rally plans from street readiness to stadium mode but the government, marinated in reactionary obtuseness, responded with the pussyfooting that only a bold hurling of the gauntlet can serve notice of patience’s limits.

Bersih, by saying that it will rally on July 9 and at the Merdeka Stadium, has kicked the ball into the government’s court.

The latter, already short on the moral calculus in this tug-of-wills, is in danger of coming up even shorter if it refuses to grant to the rally an approval it can no longer withhold.

1Tipu or 1 Bunuh ?

Najib the murderer has given the green light to shoot at sight

Bersih wants fair elections.
Perkasa and UMNO Youth wants revolution.
Najib and Police want the people shot.

People round the world did not use yellow to protest.
What does MALAYSIANS WANT?

Najib - Give the rakyat a honourable hearing...

This is getting really serious………..the army has began to train its troops for public order duties, supposedly in anticipation for a riotous Bersih rally this Saturday 9th July. Earlier, I received several calls from my retiree friends and they all express their fear for the worst should the army be deployed. They also questioned why commit the army over a situation they believe to have been crafted by the police themselves? After making a number of unwarranted arrest; unbelievably for an offence of wearing the ‘illegal’ yellow colored T shirts and on suspicion of some being communist sympathizers’, the police began to set-up road blocks in and around the city to conduct searches for more Bersih related paraphernalia. It appears to me now that the authorities are more afraid of the yellow colour; paranoid for a better word, than to safeguard and protect the constitutional rights of the people to a legal assembly demanding for an electoral reform that benefits all Malaysians.

Now, are we expecting another May 13 alike this time? While the May 13 was a race riot, this time (should a riot occur) will be markedly different. It will be a riot by Malaysians of all races, united and resolve in their demands for free and fair elections, against the authorities that are predominantly Malays. This being so, we can expect the worse, for I believe it will eventually be the pro Bersih Malays leading the charge against another fellow Malay. I dread such a scenario, and the consequences following such a riots (God forbid) will surely leave the Malays further divided and unity in tatters.

It was based on the above scenario that I believe the army SHOULD NOT be involved. The primary role of the army is clear and definitive i.e. to defend the integrity and sovereignty of the country against a foreign invader or an armed insurrection of the magnitude of the first Malayan Emergency or the communist insurgency. In the case of Bersih, I do not believe it to be anywhere close to an armed insurrection; neither can it be deemed a communist resurgence. Finding a few parangs and some home-made ‘Molotov cocktail’ cannot justify that the country is at the verge of an armed insurrection or the makings of a communist resurgence. I would term it as an act by belligerents; if indeed it was done by supporters of Bersih, and this I doubt it to be. This is where the army leadership has to be very clear as to their roles and responsibilities, and any deployment has to be fully justified and sanctioned by the highest authority of the land; in this instant the Jawatankuasa Panglima Panglima (JPP). Politicians are certainly not the authority to sanction the deployment of the army or any of the other two services of the Armed Forces. And it is important too that His Majesty the King being the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces has to be respected and consulted. And please remember too that the people are not foreign enemies of the state, but citizens of the country.

The Bersih movement as I know has since its inception being in the forefront for an electoral reform that they believe is mired in controversies. Bersih 1.0 rally that attracted thousands to the streets was for a similar purpose as Bersih 2.0, which resulted in the fall of five peninsular states to the hands of the opposition during the 2008 GE. Even Tun Dr. Mahathir conceded that the manner in which the government handles the Bersih 2.0 affair can be disastrous to the Najib regime during the up-coming GE. Tun Dr. Mahathir’s forthright statement cannot be ignored, but I see little hope in Naijb making any concession to Bersih for their demands to be heard. Taking this hard line stand against the people’s wishes this time around will lend the final blow to Najib’s administration, and to UMNO/BN 52 years of continuous rule.

My advice to Najib is to listen to the people and more importantly to the call by His Majesty the King to confer with the people in order to avoid leading this blessed country to ruins.- Brigidier General (Rtd) Mohd Arshad Raji

Bersih 2.0: The Agong fills growing vacuum — Ooi Kee Beng

Really ? Perkasa thinks he should be dethroned ... (see their messages and decipher them using rule 010).

JULY 7 — The showdown scheduled for Saturday between the Malaysian government and the group of non-government organisations calling itself Bersih 2.0 has taken a turn.

What would probably have been a long peaceful march by 100,000 Malaysians of all races, dressed in royal yellow T-shirts, towards the palace to hand over a memorandum seeking wide-ranging electoral reforms, will in all likelihood now be a rally taking place inside a stadium.

This compromise was reached after a momentous meeting between Malaysian King Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and three leaders of the non-government organisation (NGO) coalition: Front person Ambiga Sreenevasan, steering committee member Zaid Kamaruddin and national laureate A Samad Said.

The aged and highly-respected A Samad Said is being investigated under the Sedition Act and the Police Act related to unlawful assembly. His offence was a recent recital of a poem at a Bersih 2.0 event.

But, whether the stadium rally happens peacefully will depend on how the Malaysian police choose to handle the issue over the next few days. An application for the demonstration will still be required of Bersih.

It is also vital that Prime Minister Najib Razak, whose suggestion it was initially to move the rally to a stadium, shows some national leadership and gets the Home Ministry and the police to simmer down as well.

If the Home Ministry continues to feel that the compromise is a victory for the government, then one may expect more flexing of muscles from the beleaguered and agitated police force.

In the weeks prior to the march, the Home Ministry and the police had been taking messy Draconian measures to intimidate the public and discourage supporters of Bersih 2.0. These included roadblocks, arrests of members of the Parti Sosialis Malaysia on the ludicrous suspicion of trying to revive communism in the country, the detention of people wearing yellow shirts and the holding and questioning of opposition leaders and activists.

For now, calls for the release of detainees have gone unheeded, and the police have been causing huge rush-hour traffic jams outside KL with roadblocks at entrances and exits to major highways. This is highly reminiscent of the days before the first Bersih rally in November 2007 and the Hindraf Hindu rights march in December that same year.

As with these earlier cases, the rally planned for Saturday was also banned, along with Bersih 2.0 itself, by the highly unpopular Home Affairs Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, who is the Prime Minister’s cousin.

The drama of recent weeks, ending with compromises on both sides, has, to an extent, overshadowed the key issue — and this is what has left many Malaysians unhappy about the compromise stadium rally. Once the impetus of the march has died down, there is little that suggests the Prime Minister will be more willing to negotiate with Bersih 2.0 than before the intervention of the King. Electoral reforms may not take place at all.

Indeed, it is the King’s intervention that carries great significance. Whether it was the Prime Minister or not who had asked for him to intervene last Sunday, the fact remains that Mr Najib has failed over the past three years to build up his standing as a national leader, despite his various reform initiatives and One Malaysia slogan.

His refusal to act against right-wingers in his party for apparent sedition has undermined what was a weak reputation to start with. By failing to use the law in a clearly fair manner and through the continuation of dubious electoral practices, he bears responsibility for heightening the public’s need to respond against the downward trend in governance.

In the end, only the institution of the King could act as mediator between the two sides.

Through his intervention and decision to meet Bersih leaders, the King basically neutralised the Home Ministry’s ban on Bersih. It is now up to the government to act in accordance with the unique stand taken by the King, or run the risk of being disrespectful to the only office left in the country which commands nationwide esteem. — Today

Of discordant voices — Mat Salleh Rempit

JULY 7 — I have a confession to make. I am not a communist. And... I know I am French but, I swear, I don’t go on a rampage around the world, trying to destroy every monarchy on the planet.

I am not anti-Muslim. And, more importantly, I am not some stupid hooligan planning to wreak havoc upon your beautiful country. Yet, this is what the government wants you to believe about me. And still, I hope to be someone tolerant, peaceful and logical.

There is no need for me to introduce Bersih. We all know what it is about. Oh, wait... do we? As I have come to notice, there are a lot of conflicting reports on the topic. So, before I proceed, please allow me to define what Bersih is, based on my opinion.

Bersih is a movement by citizens, for citizens, asking for free and fair elections, which are usually seen as a pre-requisite for any healthy democracy. But all those conflicting reports have generated conflicting opinions.

Now, don’t get me wrong: I have no qualms with people having different opinions to mine. On the contrary! It is a great opportunity for us to exchange ideas, to have a dialogue, to... dialogue?

OK, so, this is where I am getting all hyped up. Let the NGOs, the government, the opposition deal together, sort the legal stuff out and untangle the whole situation. What I am really concerned about is the lack of reasonable arguments, of any real dialogue, at the grassroots level, between citizens.

I am worried about the way normal people, people like you and me, react to this situation. Doesn’t it look like a lot of people are popping out of their minds recently? That common sense has just gone rushing through the gutter?

I tried having a dialogue with some anti-Bersih people. Some are actually moderate and we can have a nice cup of tea and talk like civilized friends. But too often, I get those deaf monologues.

The “I speak, I speak, I speak and I won’t listen to whatever you have to say” kind of conversation. When I post a pro-Bersih statement on Facebook, some other pro-Bersih’s will “Like” it, some others would comment on it, and then comes an anti-Bersih.

He counter-argues. With two words, “Ambiga ke***g.”

Are you kidding me? Is that all you have to say? Is that your strongest argument against Bersih? I swear, sometimes I feel like a cartoon character about to pull off her hair out of frustration!

Ask an anti-Bersih a legitimate, logical question to understand his point of view, and he will most often shoot himself in the foot by avoiding the answer and ranting about something else. How to look credible and sensible with this kind of reaction? Another example:

Anti-Bersih, on my wall: Malaysia is not like Egypt, Libya or Syria. There’s democracy, elections and freedom in Malaysia. We should be grateful to be Malaysians.

Me, trying to use reason: Freedom? What about the freedom of speech and expression? The right to peaceful assembly? Those are ensured by the Malaysian Federal Constitution, Section 10, Articles 1A and 1B. How come then that they are not respected?

Anti-Bersih: Malaysians are peace-loving people. We can have teh tarik, roti canai and nasi lemak anywhere without disturbance. We don’t like violence.

Aaargh, pening! Just answer the question!

Not being able to run through a dialogue would be bad enough, but the anti-Bersih’s are also making themselves guilty of what they are accusing us of. Yes, let’s talk about threats of violence.

I am sure you have all heard of this Silat master planning to call on all his students to go to the streets and fight to protect the country. Can you imagine them? “You shall not pass.” (To be pictured with a Silat pose.) It would be funny, if they were not serious about it.

Who would be starting the violence? Am I supposed to look like a dangerous warrior, hiding weapons up my sleeves, lurking in the dark, killing innocent citizens?

And yet some people are getting really frantic and personal about it. An acquaintance of mine, an army veteran, went to the point of making threats. I am going to quote him on this. “Old soldiers never die, they fight all the way. We are determined to demolish all these evil people once for all, enough is enough. These idiots have underestimated us, we will see what happens. Are we going to just sit and watch? You know what ex-French legionnaires are capable of!”

He concluded by telling a friend “If they attack the Istana Negara, there will be bloodshed.”

Any attempts at rationalising the discussion, at calming down the situation, went to no avail as this veteran is the Ambiga-ke***g-I-won’t-answer-your-question kind of person.

Am I violent? No. Am I planning to overthrow the monarchy and the government? No.

Am I planning to destroy the country? No.

So why make threats of violence against me? Yes, I am scared. And I do believe that rising above your fears is very important. But one disturbing statement made by this ex-soldier keeps running through my mind. “I hope to meet you on July 9th.” Oh really? What for? I don’t want to find out...

Between threats of violence, kindergarten-level reasoning and refusals to have a civilised dialogue, anti-Bersih’s are most of the time harming themselves. I do agree with one anti-Bersih argument, the one stating the opposition’s hidden political agenda. Yes, the opposition is trying to hijack the movement and, no, I don’t like this one bit!

But I am open to dialogue. Are you? Will you listen and try to understand my arguments, as much as I try to understand yours? Let’s start a dialogue. A real, mature one, amongst normal citizens, between you and me.

Please. For the sake of democracy. For the sake of this country. Thank you.

Najib risks becoming the first Kafkaesque Prime Minister — Lim Kit Siang

And Lim Kit Siang Potentially Risks Becoming The Next One ?

JULY 7 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak runs the risk of becoming the first Kafkaesque Prime Minister in Malaysia who does not mean what he says and does not say what he means.

“Kafkaesque” relates to or suggestive of Franz Kafka or his writings and is often applied to bizarre and impersonal administrative situations where the individual feels powerless to understand or control what is happening.

The national sigh of relief evoked by the wise and just intervention of the Yang diPertuan Agong on Monday — that the “gathering storm” in the past week over the Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9 calling for free, fair and clean elections could be dispelled — lasted only 24 hours, for it proved to be both short-lived and premature.

As a direct consequence of the wise and just intervention of the Yang di Pertuan Agong, Bersih organisers called off the July 9 march and instead agreed to hold a rally at any stadium as proposed by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

However, when the Bersih organisers decided on Merdeka Stadium as the venue for the peaceful rally for free, fair and clean elections, all sorts of roadblocks and obstacles were thrown up by the various authorities despite the fact that such a rally at Merdeka Stadium had the blessings of the Yang di Pertuan Agong, viz:

The Home Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein's insistence that Bersih is still illegal (suggesting that the Yang di Pertuan Agong had met with unlawful characters), that the Bersih T-shirts were still unlawful and that the law would apply to close to 200 persons arrested in connection with the proposed Bersih 2.0 march on Saturday;

Police insistence that the Bersih stadium rally requires a police permit; The snub by the Merdeka Stadium authorities refusing to allow the use of the stadium for Bersih 2.0 rally; and

The statement by the Minister for Information, Communications and Culture Datuk Dr. Rais Yatim late yesterday evening that the Cabinet had decided not to allow Bersih to use Merdeka Stadium as the venue for the July 9 rally.

Najib capped these roadblocks and obstacles with his most irresponsible act in his 27 months as Prime Minister when he “passed the buck” of the Bersih 2.0 stadium rally to the police claiming that Bersih, “although still an illegal entity, will have to make an official application to the police” — without explaining how an illegal entity could make such an application or why the Prime Minister is not prepared to take responsibility for the stadium rally which has the blessings of the Yang di Pertuan Agong but allow it to be derailed.

With the refusal of the Home Minister to stand down the police apparatus of repression and reports of the Federal Government suspending multiple public services this weekend including full or partial clampdown on the internet to foil the Bersih 2.0 stadium rally at Merdeka Stadium, unnecessary police roadblocks choking traffic and business, it would appear that the just and wise intervention of the Yang di Pertuan Agong had been in vain.

At the height of the Egyptian popular uprising in February, Najib called for an end to the bloodshed in Egypt and stressed the importance for its people to decide the future of the country.

He said the Malaysian government want both sides — Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Egyptian protestors — to not resort to any form of violence and there not be any casualties as “the people only want to show where they stand regarding the leadership of the Egyptian government”.

Najib had added: “In a democratic system, we must prioritise the people and that is why any solution in Egypt must be based on demands and wants of the people to determine the future of their government.”

Why then is Najib ignoring his own advice to Mubarak in February?

Why has Najib allowed the authorities to step up their threats in the joint police-army crowd control simulation exercise two days ago, conspicuously warning that participants will be short if a dispersal order is not heeded?

It is reported that the Prime Minister will be leaving for overseas tomorrow. He should not do so but should be in the country to ensure that the Bersih 2.0 stadium rally on July 9 as agreed upon as a result of the wise and just intervention of the Yang di Pertuan Agong and with his concurrence is held in a smooth, peaceful and orderly manner.
