The BN will fall in the next General Election

The BN will fall in the next General Election
MalaysiaKini : The Malaysian General Election will be called soon. It will be in June or July this year, definitely before August. The latest indicator was the postponement of Mr Ling Liong Sik's trial to August 1st. The BN does not want that embarassing trial going on during the elections.
The BN has been engaged in a desperate battle to regain lost ground before calling the elections. But they are blunderers, and are increasingly out of touch with the common voter. The votes that they lost to the opposition in 2008, have stayed with the opposition.

As example, we can look at the Hulu Selangor constituency. The BN won it by 14,483 votes in 2004. They lost it by 198 votes in 2008 to PKR. They won it back in a by-election in 2010 but only by 1,725 votes. 14 thousand vote margins are a thing of the past. In 2011, they will lose it again.
Nor will BN win back Selangor. In fact, they may very well lose Tanjong Karang, Sabak Bernam and Pandan, all parliamentary seats which they won by fairly slim margins in 2008, as well as the related state seats.

The BN looks at Malaysians through race-tinted glasses and they have different strategies for different races.
For the Chinese, it is threats, as reflected by Najib's transparent blackmail attempt. Not voting for the MCA, he warned, will cost the Chinese representation in the Cabinet. He was assisted by the dubious Chua Soi Lek, who tried to pretend that the PM was merely stating a fact. No one, of course, was fooled.
The Malays are served up an unappetising fare of scandal and innuendo to try to get them to reject Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar and PAS are the key to the opposition Malay vote. So the BN applies the dual strategy of trying to destroy Anwar's character, while at the same time trying to win over PAS to their side. Both strategies have failed.
The MIC meanwhile is complacent enough to believe that it's the usual tactics of buying the rural Indian vote for pittances, will succeed. They have long given up on the urban Indians, who would be too embarassed to have anything to do with the MIC. It would turn them into the butt of jokes among their peers, if nothing else.
The MIC's strategy will not work this time, as the voters are more knowledgeable and the opposition is making headway into the estates. Even if the MIC succeeds, the Indian swing will be made irrelevant by the Chinese vote shift.
Sarawak, which the BN arrogantly called it's 'fixed deposit', has woken up. The BN will lose at least 10 parliamentary seats there.
Najib's 1Malaysia strategy is in tatters. It was a 2-faced strategy in any event, 1Malaysia for the non-Malays, 1Melayu for the Malays as promoted by Utusan and seconded by Mr.Muhyiddin, the Deputy Prime Minister. It crumbles under the weight of it's own contradictions.
They have nothing, they will lose, and Malaysia may finally be free.

Dr M sees racial strife if MCA shut out

May 04, 2011

Dr Mahathir said MCA was in a similar position ahead of Election 1969. — file pic

PUTRAJAYA, May 4 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad suggested today that the Chinese community needed to keep MCA in government to maintain racial stability and co-operation.

He stressed that this was a matter of concern for the entire nation as without co-operation among the races in government, instability would ensue.

“It’s a cause of worry for the whole nation.

“Once we divide ourselves into Chinese and Malays and we fight each other, that’s the end of co-operation and there will be no stability in the country,” he told reporters after attending the prize-giving ceremony of the Perdana Leadership Foundation – MPH Essay Competition 2010 here today.

Dr Mahathir was asked to comment on his Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s call for the Chinese community to vote for MCA or risk losing representation in government.

After the prime minister’s statement was likened to a threat to the community, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek came to his rescue, claiming it was merely a statement of fact.

Dr Chua added that Najib was only reiterating his party’s stance that it would not accept any post in the federal and state governments formed by BN if it did worse in the coming 13th general election than Election 2008.

Dr Mahathir agreed that Najib was stating the obvious, pointing out that should MCA fare badly in the next general election, its party leaders could not be appointed into government.

“You cannot expect that if there are no (MCA) candidates but Barisan Nasional wins, they take a DAP man as minister.

“That is not possible,” he said.

Dr Mahathir also recalled a similar scenario in 1969 when former MCA president the late Tun Tan Siew Sin had made the same assertion.

“But in any case, MCA still won quite a lot of seats then so there were candidates for MCA to be represented in government,” said Dr Mahathir.

MCA, the ruling BN coalition’s senior Chinese partner, currently only holds four out of 30 spots in the Cabinet.

Najib, who is also Umno and the coalition’s chief, said on Saturday that MCA had sent out a clear message to voters that they cannot have it both ways.

“I see the MCA sending the message that the Chinese cannot support the opposition and at the same time expect strong representation in the government. They have to choose,” he was reported as saying by state news agency Bernama.

In Najib’s defence, Dr Chua had also denied the Chinese electorate cannot be represented by leaders from other races but hinted that only MCA can lead the community in BN.

“No, it is not that the Chinese cannot be represented by Malays or Indians but because the composition of Barisan Nasional has been such that we are a multi-racial Barisan Nasional but traditionally within this Barisan Nasional umbrella, there are component parties that represent certain ethnic groups not forgetting the common interest of all Malaysians that cuts across races,” he added.

Currently, the senior party in the BN only has 15 MPs and 31 state assemblymen from the last general election in 2008.

It had contested in 40 parliamentary seats and 90 state seats in GE12.

The MCA presidential council has also backed Dr Chua’s promise to reject all government posts if it fails to win votes from the Chinese community it is supposed to represent.

Dr Chua was also reported to have said the MCA would stay in BN even if its performance remained dismal.

The former health minister has come under repeated attacks from the opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) bloc and his predecessor in the MCA, Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, in the last two weeks since the Sarawak state election.

Dr Chua has been challenged to stake the MCA’s government positions after controversially telling its Chinese coalition partner in Sarawak, SUPP, to drop all positions in the state Cabinet after a poor showing in the state polls.

However, the MCA and Umno-owned newspaper Utusan Malaysia have clashed over the latter’s call for a “1 Melayu, 1 Bumi” campaign to unite the Malays against the growing threat of Chinese political power.

'Umno never labelled Indians pariah, we just address them as one.?"

'Umno never labelled Indians pariah'

'Umno has never caused disunity... only the Indians have called themselves pariah,' says Sungai Dua rep Jasmin Mohammed.

A Penang Umno assemblyperson has vehemently denied that his party leaders or members had ever used a derogatory term for the Indian Malaysian community.

Debating the Yang di-Pertua Negeri's speech in the state legislative assembly today, Jasmin Mohammed (BN-Sungai Dua) denied that Umno had ever used the word 'pariah' to insult the Indians.

"Only the Indians have labelled themselves pariah," said Jasmin.

"Umno has never caused disunity among the races. It has made efforts to unite everyone... we have Chinese and Indians with us (in BN), but we are often blamed for all sorts of things."

NONEThe matter cropped up when RSN Rayer (DAP-Seri Delima, left) commented on the controversial Malay literature book 'Interlok' used in schools and blamed the BN for disuniting the people.

Surfacing several times during debate over the last two days, the issue of 'Interlok' continued to be a controversy despite the move to drop the word 'pariah' from the textbook.

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had said that the word had sparked a firestorm of protests from the Indian Malaysian community.

Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, had said an independent panel set up to study the novel had agreed to replace the word 'pariah' with 'golongan yang sama' (the same group).

In response to Jasmin's denial, Rayer said only Indians from MIC used the term for people of their own race.

Speaker Abdul Halim Hussein moved to prevent a potential blow-up and told the members not to prolong the issue.

'Chinese are pendatang'

Unwilling to let up, Rayer asked Jasmin to come clean and admit that one of its leaders in Penang had previously called Chinese Malaysians immigrants.

NONEHe pressed Jasmin (left) to concede that the party's former Bukit Bendera chief, Ahmad Ismail, had made the controversial remark in a ceramah during the Permatang Pauh by-election in 2007.

"He said the Chinese are pendatang... true or not? Until today, Ahmad Ismail has yet to withdraw his statement," said Rayer.

"No action was taken against the one who called the Chinese immigrants, but the reporter who reported the matter was detained under the Internal Security Act."

The reporter who was detained, Tan Hoon Cheng from Sin Chew Daily, was released after 24 hours.

Then Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said Tan was kept in police custody because "her safety was under threat".

Jasmin defended Ahmad, saying the Chinese daily had quoted the Ahmad selectively, leaving out other parts of his speech.

He urged Malaysians to remember their history as it is integral to their lives, and cautioned that history is often politicised by certain quarters.

No difference with or without govt representation

No difference with or without govt representation
MalaysiaKini : Prime Minister Najib Razak has changed his tack in relating to the Chinese electorate. He seems to have discarded his role of the charmer who spun 1Malaysia hogwash to win Chinese hearts and minds. He is now threatening them instead.
Hes telling them that if they dont support Barisan Nasional (BN) at the next general election, they will not have representation in the Government. This is because Chua Soi Lek, the MCA president, has declared that his party will not accept government positions if they dont get Chinese support.

Najibs switch to a threatening mode shows that hes desperate. He clearly must be after what has happened in the recent Sarawak state elections, when the Chinese dumped the Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) in favour of the Opposition. Despite Najibs 10-day campaign in the state, the Chinese there did not show him any face. They are simply fed-up with the corrupt BN Government and they want reform. But for BN, the loss of Chinese support, especially in Sarawak, with the possible spread to Sabah, could be crucial at the next general election.

Chua has since come forward to say that Najib was not issuing a threat but only making a statement of fact in response to the MCAs proposed stand. But knowing the kind of pakat-pakat (conniving) politics practiced by BN, one is more likely to believe that Najib and Chua had both cooked up this ploy together right from the start to supposedly strike fear in the hearts of the Chinese.

But should the Chinese be cowed? Should they worry if they had no representation in government to be specific, the BN Government? Why should they? What ha! s MCA (a nd Gerakan) representation in the Government done for them? Hasnt Chua woken up to the fact that it is because the Chinese feel the MCA has been useless in BN that they dumped the party in 2008?
And as if to reaffirm the hopeless situation that both the MCA and Gerakan are in, the same day Najib issued his threat, Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali issued his own warning the two parties to stop bringing up sensitive issues or risk having their candidates undermined at the next general election. By this, Ibrahim meant Perkasa would urge Malays not to vote for the MCA and Gerakan. He even insisted that both parties must defend the Malays and Islam before they should get Malay votes.
Of course, we can dismiss Perkasa as a minnow that appears bigger than it really is because its president has a loud mouth and exaggerates his own importance. But it is no less humiliating for the MCA and Gerakan to be publicly chided in this fashion. Whats more, big brother Umno has made no move to chide Perkasa back, which merely underscores the weakness of the lesser parties.
Should the Chinese support such weak parties? If the MCA and Gerakan were to remain in the BN Government after the next general election and thats assuming BN wins they would merely be playing the same old second fiddle. Supporting them would probably just give them a chance to continue to get a share of the loot, like the MCA did in the PKFZ scandal. Why elect them for that purpose?

In any case, if the MCA wants to turn down government positions, thats its own business. It has no right to put the onus on the Chinese or attempt to blackmail them.
Threats wont work. Chua should know that. So should Najib. Former prime minister Abdullah Badawi issued the same threat on the eve of the 2008 general election; it was on the front page of mainstream newspapers. The Chinese didnt give a damn; in fact, they were even more pissed off. Taib Mahmud did the same in the run-up to the Sarawak state ele! ctions. The Chinese told his coalition to go fly a kite.
If Najib wants to win back the Chinese, he has to take positive, radical measures. He has to assure them that the Government would be squeaky clean, that there would be no more rent-seeking, that the countrys institutions will be respected, that the Government will strictly follow the rule of law, that the Chinese would have a place under the Malaysian sun as is guaranteed by the Federal Constitution.
It will not be enough for him to merely say that he will attend to these things; he has to be seen to be doing it. Because talk is cheap. The reason the Chinese dont buy his 1Malaysia drivel is that its precisely nothing but drivel. In reality, nothing has been done to make things better for them. And meanwhile, the corruption and the rent-seeking continue. The Chinese realise more and more that the taxes they pay are going to the wrong causes. But what are they getting in return? Has there even been an improvement in the quality of Malaysian life?
The MCA and Gerakan have failed them. They are as culpable in the corruption that has set this country back. Their leaders get shouted down each time they make a squeak about any issue that displeases Umno. They get insulted by Umno seniors like Nazri Aziz and Hishammuddin Hussein.
Why should the Chinese want any party to represent them that has no cojones?
In fact, the MCA is a reminder to them of what a disgrace it is to Chinese dignity. As for Gerakan, whenever a politically aware Chinese person says something about its president, Koh Tsu Koon, they would accompany it with spittle. And they dont even have to be from Penang.
The greatest irony about Najibs threat is that for one who espouses 1Malaysia, he should even have entertained the thought. A truly 1Malaysia government would not look at race in its appointment of ministers. It would serve all races, whether or not there are Chinese representatives among its Cabinet. And if indeed the MCA did pull o! ut of go vernment positions and Najib still craved to see Chinese faces at Cabinet meetings, he could still do what he has done before appoint non-politicians, like he did Idris Jala. Or appoint Chinese from other BN parties. If they havent been duly elected, he could simply make them senators first. Hes not new at that game either.
So, whatever it is, the Chinese have nothing to worry about. With or without representation in government, there is no difference they will still be as they are. Chua and his MCA can do what they like; it wont matter anyhow. The Chinese will vote according to their conscience. After all, they have a saying: It is better to die a hero than to survive in disgrace. Perhaps the MCA should take note of that before the next general election.

The time has come for UMNO to join PAS and control 90% of Parliament

The time has come for UMNO to join PAS and control 90% of Parliament
MalaysiaKini :Written by Iskandar Dzulkarnain
Now that PAS has openly rejected UMNOs offer to merge, many quarters have begun to question PASs sincerity as an Islamic Party for not accepting UMNOs offer. In the mass media, they hope to sway the Malays from perceiving PAS as a Malay and Muslim Party. They are saying that PAS is willing to sell out the Malays and Muslims whereas UMNO has been protecting the Malays and Muslims all this while.

PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang has called on UMNO to join PAS instead. An olive branch has been offered to UMNO to join PAS and save themselves from disintegration. But has UMNO considered the offer seriously? What is so wrong for UMNO to join PAS? Isnt it UMNOs dream to be united with PAS?
Like SNAP, UMNO just has to leave the Barisan Nasional and deregister the party. Then call on all UMNO members to resign. UMNO members can then join PAS to fight for Islamic Unity as they have professed to do. They should also not vie for party posts in PAS, and it us up to the PAS Supreme Council to determine which ex-UMNO leaders should run in the next election. And if ever they fail to get enough votes they should not vie for Cabinet posts as well.
The criteria for membership in PAS should be that: UMNO leaders who wish to join PAS must accept PASs political struggle. Proclaim their affirmation of the Islamic Faith and to uphold the sanctity of Islam. They must also be prepared to fight for social injustice, as well as for all races in the country. Can they accept such a struggle or is it just talk?
Declare assets and be corruption-! free

They also have to declare their assets and be free of corruption. PAS does not want recurring sinners contaminating the party. They must declare their will to discard racist mentality and to uphold Islamic principles that guarantees equality among all races. They must also assist PAS to bridge the racial divide and assure equal opportunities based on meritocracy. UMNO cannot continue to champion unequal rights and get away with it.
They must be able to accept Pakatan Rakyats struggle for Nationalism, Racial Equality and a Competent, Accountable and a Transparent Government
There should not be any remnants of UMNO in PAS, should they wish to merge.
Immediate on the list would be the dismantling of the Executive, Judiciary and Legislative so that these 3 bodies can be independent of itself.
With UMNO, Pakatan can control 90% of Parliament
In doing so, Pakatan Rakyat will be strong enough to take over the government with at least 90 per cent of the seats. A BN without UMNO will be helpless to take on PR. This will also rid this country of all the old leaders that have overstayed their welcome. With new leaders taking over, Malaysia will be transformed into a vibrant democratic nation with a prosperous future.
But will UMNO leaders resign to join PAS? Why should PAS join UMNO? Malays are not divided. Enlightened Malays join PAS and PKR to fight for injustice against the Malay race. UMNO has failed to improve the lot of the Malays, and that is the reason that Malays are flocking to PAS and PKR. It has a lot to do with religion, as UMNO has many a time interpreted the religion to suit their political agenda. Their consistent degradation of the religion has made many Malays displeased.
Muslims under PAS hope to see a new era in Islamic freedom, free of the shackles that thwart Islamic thought. Freedom to practise their faith without radical interpretations and freedom to ! live an Islamic way of life as Muslims see fit without the hypocrisy attached to it. With such enlightenment, Muslims hope to see more non-Malays attracted to the greatness and compassion of the Religion. More than anything, Muslims truly want Islam to be respected for its true essence, and placed highly where it belongs.
Pointless to hold onto a divided Malaysia

UMNO fails to see that holding on to a divided Malaysia will not solve any problem. It is only a recipe for disaster. It is also the reason why Malaysians are running away from UMNO. Their stubborn insistence of race based politics has finally brought about their downfall.
Malays have also seen a lot of injustice done in the past to their race, and to the Non Malays. Religion is being used indiscriminately by UMNO to suit their agenda, enslaving the Malays and Muslims unconsciously. Pitting religion to muscle in on constitutional rights has made many Malays and Non Malays unhappy.
50billion ringgit of the 52billion ringgit earmarked for the Malays have gone missing. 50billion ringgit is not much compared to the 888billion ringgit that has left Malaysian shores. But 50billion is equivalent to 50,000 Malay millionaires. Assuming only 100 Malays down line, from immediate families, to friends and colleagues benefit from the economic stimulation of each millionaire, 5 million Malays would have stood to benefit from this economic stimulus. That would have made the 30 percent needed by the NEP for Malays economic participation more attainable many years back.
The General Election is very close. UMNO can still reconsider PASs generous offer for a better Malaysia.

Snap polls this year says Anwar....

Opposition leader and PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim gave his two sen worth on when the snap general election will be called, reckoning that it will be this year.

I believe that it will be called this year. Whenever it is, we must be prepared. The Pakatan Rakyat council also had a meeting on this recently," he said.

Saying that the coalition would work hard to defend its seats, he also lambasted views that PKR is the weakest link in the Pakatan, having been rocked by defections and Anwar's (left) own alleged sodomy and sex controversies.

"Never mind. Is that MCA's view?" he asked the ethnic Chinese Malaysiakini reporter with a smile.

Choice words for analysts

Despite that, he remained upbeat about Pakatan's chances in the polls, reserving some choice words for armchair analysts.

"If you look at Sarawak, from Kapit all the way to Ba'Kelalan... see, I was there. And you can't just say that (PKR should only focus on) Permatang Pauh and Ampang.

"Those areas are tough, but you ask those analysts from Kuala Lumpur to go to Ba'Kelalan and see the trend there.

"There're no newspapers or alternative media there, only TV. The challenge is serious, but our machinery is in place there," he said. Ba'Kelalan is held by Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian.

The party had won only three out of the 49 seats it contested in the recent Sarawak state election. PKR won 31 parliamentary seats in the 2008 general election but the numbers have dwindled to 25 as a result of defections and the sacking of the lawmakers.

Speaking at an economic forum at the Ampang Jaya local council auditorium, Anwar - also the Selangor economic adviser - estimated that the Klang Valley mass r! ail proj ect will cost the taxpayers RM55 billion through bonds, the highest-ever estimate for the project. A CIMB Research report previously estimated RM53 billion. The original estimate by the government was RM36.6 billion.

My estimate is that this will spike up the national debt to more than 60 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) when the project is complete by 2016, said Anwar, a former finance minister.

The high debt increment will need a comprehensive study and analysis, and yet the prime minister is still flip-flopping over the detailed cost of the project, he said.

Anwar also proposed to the Selangor government to set up an independent panel to study the feasibility of the project.

Malaysia starts fingerprinting visitors

Malaysia has begun taking fingerprints from foreigners entering the country in a bid to prevent illegal immigrants coming in using fake papers, an official said on Thursday. -- PHOTO: AP

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA has begun taking fingerprints from foreigners entering the country in a bid to prevent illegal immigrants coming in using fake papers, an official said on Thursday.

Up to two million people - mostly from neighbouring Indonesia and Myanmar - work in Malaysia illegally, authorities say. Those arrested for working illegally or overstaying are deported but many try to return.

A pilot system, implemented at several entry points like the Kuala Lumpur International Airport since late last month, requires visitors to give prints of both index fingers, immigration spokesman Abdul Haidir Mohamad Sukor said.

He said the biometric system was expected to be implemented nationwide from June 1. Malaysia has one of Asia's largest populations of foreign workers. Some 1.8 million people, mostly from poorer regional countries, work in such sectors as construction, plantations, manufacturing and hospitality.

The new scheme will help authorities keep better track of foreigners, said Abdul Haidir, with those caught overstaying or committing any other offences now unable to re-enter Malaysia under different identities.

'Starting from June 1, all foreigners must give their data,' Abdul Haidir told AFP. 'We collect all the data to ensure we can detect problems earlier, if they have committed any offence before.' 'Before this in Malaysia, the overstayers are just sent back but they can come back with fake passports. With the biometric system, they cannot lie,' he said. ! -- AFP

"MACC to charge Lim Kit Siang soon ... "?

Teoh, his boss suspected of cheating: witness

(Bernama) -- The commission of inquiry into the death of Teoh Beng Hock yesterday was told that Teoh and the Seri Kembangan State Assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah were suspected of cheating the government by abusing a bumiputra company to secure projects.

Besides Teoh and his boss, contractor Lee Wai Weng was also suspected by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) of the same offence.

Investigation officer of the Inspection and Consultancy Division of MACC, Ahmad Shafik Abdul Rahman said the three individuals were suspected of committing the offence but the MACC could not continue with the probe due to the death of Teoh and the circumstances then.

He said initially, the investigation only focused on the false claims under Section 18 of the MACC Act for 80 projects in Seri Kembangan and Kuala Kubu Baru but later there were other statements concerning cheating offences.

He said that based on the statements by several individuals, it was found that nine bumiputra companies had been abused by Lee to secure Class F and small projects.

"The owners of these companies had denied carrying out the projects or programmes stated in the Assemblyman's allocation application. They (the companies) only lent their company name to Lee because they were promised between five and 10 per cent depending on project size," he said.

Ahmad Shafik said that for the Class F licence, one of the conditions stipulated was that the company must belong to bumiputras but in most cases, the non-bumiputras were the ones who obtained government projects.

"It's as though the government has been cheated by what is being done by the non-bumiputras. Such cases were not investigated because at that time I only focused on the false claims," he said.

On Teoh, Ahmad Shafik said Teoh had said that he had discussed with the Kajang Municipal Council Member Tan Boon Wah on the price of flags and Teoh received 60 sen each but the flags were sold at RM1.60 each.

The investigation also revealed that there were four invoices for certain projects in Teoh's laptop computer (using the name of bumiputra companies) and according to Teoh's statement, they were received from Lee by e-mail.

Meanwhile, salesman Mohd Harun Abdullah disclosed that he and Lee had been friends for the past 10 years and he was involved in the formation of three companies registered under the name of his wife, and brothers-in-law to secure DAP projects.

He said the three companies were set up on the recommendation of Lee and that he could not register them under his (Mohd Harun) name because he had been blacklisted by the bank.

Mohd Harun said the owners of the three companies did not carry out any transaction and they only signed blank cheques to make payments to the DAP because all project transactions were handled by Lee.

In the morning's proceedings, a member of the Kajang Municipal Council, Lee Kee Hiong said that Teoh was an honest man of integrity, and in fact described Teoh as the best political secretary that he had ever met.

Teoh, 30, who was the political aide of Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam on July 16, 2009, after being questioned overnight at the Selangor MACC office on the 14th floor.

The commission is headed by Federal Court Judge Tan Sri James Foong Cheng Yuen. The members on the panel are former Federal Court judge Datuk Abdul Kadir Sulaiman, former Court of Appeal judge Datuk T.S. Nathan, Penang Hospital's forensic pathologist Datuk Dr Bhupinder Singh and Professor Dr Mohamed Hatta Shaharom, the Dean of Cyberjaya Medical Science College University.

The setting up of the commission was announced by the Prime Minister on Jan 26, which among others, was to investigate the cause of Teoh's death after the Coroner's Court returned an open verdict.

The hearing continues today and Ean will be called to give his statement.

Police reports that go nowhere

MalaysiaKini - KUALA LUMPUR: Police rarely investigate reports filed by non-governmental organisations.
Police blame the NGOs for not following up on their complaints, but several of the groups say this is not always true and is a poor excuse for inaction.
“We do follow-up,” said Fadiah Fikri of Lawyers for Liberty.

“We send memorandums and once went public asking for progress reports. But they keep forgetting to update us, or they pass us from department to department when we call.”
She added that it was in any case not necessary for complainants to follow up on their reports since it was the police’s duty to investigate.
An officer at Bukit Aman claimed that none of the reports that were ignored fell under the “criminal case” category, but the Human Rights Party (HRP) said this was a lie.
“We’ve made hundreds of reports over deaths in custody, racial disharmony and so on,” said S Jayathas, HRP’s information chief.

“I feel that police action is based on who makes the report. If it were Umno or Perkasa, action would be taken immediately.”
Police sources denied this allegation.
“If it’s criminal in nature, we will definitely investigate,” said one source. “But if there are civil cases which do not merit police investigation, then we do not. Many groups lodge reports for the sake of it. They should seek advice before doing so.”
Describing the typical NGO complaint, the Bukit Aman officer said: “It’s lodged at some police station, gets classified and falls into some strange category because it’s not under the Penal Code.
“We review them on a case-by-case basis and some are thrown out because they are civil cases under specific acts, such as commercial crimes.
“Complainants should come back to check on the status of their cases, but they don’t.”
Yap Heng Lung, a coordinator at Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram), complained that although the police would give cursory preliminary updates, they would not follow up despite promises to do so.
“When we ask them what’s happening, they make excuses like saying they are busy.”

TV3 bent on doing hatchet job on Anwar

MalaysiaKini - Sparing no efforts to finish off Anwar Ibrahim – the man who, after five years as deputy prime minister, found himself dethroned and later went on to stir the fire of reformation among the people – has revealed the depth of nastiness the country’s politics has stooped to.
Going after Anwar’s blood, by hook or crook, has also proved that while politics in this country has long been bastardised by unscrupulous minds, politicians continue to shamelessly display their insecurity over the loss of power and are willing to do whatever it takes to stay in power.

Working in cahoots to perpetuate the infamy is TV3, which has proven to be the least objective television station around. Owners Media Prima are sparing no efforts in joining hands with Umno in doing what it takes to kill off Umno’s most dreaded enemy, Anwar, leader of Pakatan Rakyat, the three-party opposition alliance.
Recently, TV3 in an act so callous aired on its prime time news at 8pm the controversial sex video clip allegedly depicting Anwar, 63, with an unknown woman. This clip was lurid in that it depicted the man in a compromising situation with his female partner.
And it was none other than Rahim Tamby Chik – the former chief minister of Malacca who years ago lost his position after news broke out that he had sex with a schoolgirl – who, together with two others, showed the video clip to media editors on March 21 this year, certain that it would put an end to Anwar.
If showing the video clip was TV3’s aim of humiliating Anwar and burying him, it is far from successful. Instead, it only earned TV3 public condemnation, for the station’s lack of discretion in showing a video clip entailing “closed-door” acts. And that day, too, TV3 made it obvious that it will do whatever is necessary to satisfy its political master, Umno.
Since TV3 is owned by Media Prima, which is linked to Umno, there is no saying what more this television station is capable of doing to appease its “bosses”.
TV3 no longer objective

The puerile action by TV3 is nothing new. When it comes to topics concerning sexuality, TV3 notoriously goes to town depicting the marginalised communities be they gays, lesbians, bisexuals or transgenders as deviants.
On days when a by-election or general election is at hand, TV3 becomes the able puppet of Umno, its strings pulled by this ruling party any which way it desires.
A shame that the mainstream media can no longer be relied upon when it comes to free and fair reporting in their servitude to the ruling party Umno.
Taking the Anwar sex clip to a level so crass has made it clear that Umno is determined at all cost never to allow the Pakatan Rakyat alliance the slightest chance of making it to Putrajaya, the country’s cradle of power. And getting rid of Anwar is the only way for Umno to enjoy a good night’s sleep.
While Umno continues to spin its web of deceit, the party’s air-tight control over news channnels like TV3, TV9 and ntv7 has only worsened public’s opinion of the gross play of cheap tactics employed by Umno in wanting to exert absolute power, forever.
TV3 had no qualms going to town with the sex clip claiming to feature Anwar, yet this station had no guts to take on corrupt ministers who engage in breach of trust, corruption and betray the trust of the people.
Be it Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s alleged affair with Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu or the fact that Information, Communications and Culture Minister Rais Yatim was said to have raped his domestic helper, TV3 avoided these and many other issues that demanded public scrutiny like the plague.
There is no doubt left that TV3 has long become a slave to the “powers that be”, compromising its duty to its viewers and dishing out what its political masters dictate.
TV3 etc stop playing politics

Making judgment is not the job of a news channel. Yet, this is what TV3 knows best when its prime time news readers unabashedly conclude that only Umno can best administer this nation.
Watching the manner in which coverage was accorded to Anwar, it was clear that TV3 is never more thrilled than when it has the chance to show Anwar at his worst, losing his cool time and again when asked by reporters about the DNA or Omega watch.
For this television station, painting as ugly a picture of Anwar as possible is supposedly doing the country a favour, sort of cautioning the people that this is one man who is not fit to assume leadership responsibilities. After all, Anwar was charged with sodomy and corruption, the latter seeing him sentenced to six years in prison in 1999.
Whether Anwar makes a good leader or otherwise is not for Media Prima to decide. Nor is it the news stations’ work to play judge and jury, passing judgment on all that Anwar does.
It is clear that TV3 has turned deviant, its raison d’être now determined by none other than Umno. How long more does TV3 plan to humiliate itself in the eyes of the people? Many are tired with the station’s hidden agenda and have decided to boycott it.
Indeed, if Media Prima does have any understanding of the tenets of reporting, it will stay focused on its true purpose which is to educate, entertain and inform viewers, not lie, betray and brainwash the people.
As for Umno, deriding an individual for his past actions, however unsavoury, does not give it the licence to engage in character assassination. As for the misguided belief that only Umno is fit to stake its claim to Putrajaya, the 2008 general election was the much needed wake-up call to accept the bitter truth that the road to Putrajaya is not exclusive to Umno.
As for Anwar, enough of destroying his reputation – labelling him as a sex maniac. To hound him using flimsy excuses has resulted in Umno making a fool of itself and the recent video clip is yet another desperate move to humiliate Anwar in the hope that it will finally teach Anwar the much- needed lesson to back off from his dream of conquering Putrajaya.
Maligning Anwar every second of the day is not going to win Umno the people’s trust, one which it lost in 2008. Stop the gutter politics and get down to serving the people – that will help Umno redeem its lost esteem.

Pakatan still confident of regaining Perak even with lesser seats

Pakatan still confident of regaining Perak even with lesser seats
MalaysiaKini : Public anger over Barisan Nasional’s (BN) 2009 takeover of Perak appears to have dissipated with a Pakatan Rakyat (PR) poll showing it will win fewer seats now than if snap polls were called then.
An opinion poll conducted by the state PR shortly after the February 2009 putsch found that the coalition would have swept to victory in 40 seats or a two-thirds majority in the 59-seat assembly which BN currently controls with 28 assemblymen and four “friendly” independents.

However, a similar survey by Perak PR earlier this year showed it would only win 33 seats if polls were held now.
“Sentiment was very high in 2009. Since then people have calmed down,” said Perak DAP chief Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham.
Pakatan Rakyat (PR) had won 31 state seats in the March 2008 general election and in January 2009, Bota assemblyman Datuk Nasarudin Hashim defected from Umno to PKR.

However, he returned to Umno in early February at the same time three assemblymen left PR and backed BN as independents.
This allowed Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir to be sworn in as mentri besar on February 6, 2009.
The ousted Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin then challenged the validity of Zambry’s appointment in court.
The Bukit Gantang MP claimed the Sultan could not order him to resign as MB and that BN’s majority had not been tested in the assembly.
PR campaigned for a fresh election to be called so that the people’s mandate could be sought.
But BN resisted and finally prevailed in February 2010 when the Federal Court ruled that Zambry was the rightful MB.
Malim Nawar assemblyman Keshvinder Singh also left the DAP in June 2010 and became a BN-friendly independent, giving the ruling coalition a majority of 32 to 27.
Ngeh said personal feedback from Perak voters showed that they have become less interested in the takeover and wanted both coalitions to serve the public.
“After we did the hunger strike in May and fought BN’s legitimacy in several assembly sittings, people started telling us that they got the message and it was time to move on,” said the Beruas MP.
With the momentum appearing to swing back towards BN, Ngeh said PR may try to resurrect the issue during the next general election.
However, the Sitiawan assemblyman said the year-long impasse had created a personality battle between Nizar and Zambry in the silver state.
He said the state opposition has already agreed to maintain Nizar as its mentri besar candidate.
“One of the questions that Perak voters must decide on is which MB they prefer?” he said.
Ngeh said while PR questions Zambry’s record as mentri besar, BN countered this by trying to provoke Nizar and himself.
The senior state executive councillor during Nizar’s 11-month administration said this includes the claim that Ngeh was the “de facto MB” and the PAS leader was merely a puppet for the DAP.
He also said according to PR’s analysis, the next general election could see it losing up to nine marginal seats that it won in 2008 although it could also snatch victory in 11 such areas held by BN. - Malaysian Insider

Utusan may have twisted Perlis cleric's comment on Umno merger, warns PAS
MalaysiaKini : PAS has reacted with caution over a report in UMNO-owned Utusan Malaysia quoting Perlis mufti as condemning those who opposed unity between the Islamic party and UMNO.

An aide to Kelantan Menteri Besar and PAS Murshidul Am today said he believed that the statement by Dr Juanda Jaya had been deliberately taken out of context and misinterpreted by the paper to show that the mufti was against PAS leaders who rejected the idea after being suggested by prime minister Najib Razak last week.

"Let it be recalled, that PAS leaders including Murshidul Am Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has repeatedly said they were anytime prepared for unity between PAS and UMNO so long as UMNO changes its policies to Islam," said Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, Nik Aziz's press secretary.

He said just like a Muslim is required to proclaim the shahadah (affirmation of the Islamic faith), similarly an organisation's constitution would be considered as its shahadah.

"Has UMNO proclaimed the shahadah in its constitution?

"It has been asked, how come PAS could work with DAP and PKR in Pakatan Rakyat? The fact is DAP and PKR had never rejected PAS's Islamic principles and neither have they called on us to abandon our struggle," he said, and referred to the recent statement by Chinese-based MCA calling on PAS to first drop its Islamic ideology before being invited to join Barisan Nasional.

He said the mufti should instead comment on the cooperation between UMNO and MCA, who plans to sue the Kelantan state government over its ban on gambling in the state.

"What is Islam's view when UMNO, the MCA's partner in Barisan Nasional, keeps its silence about this stance?" he asked. - Harakahdaily

Umno College ridiculed online

MalaysiaKini - KUALA LUMPUR: Twittersphere is buzzing with pot shots at the proposal for an Umno College by party leader Mukhriz Mahathir.
Mukhriz was reported proposing for an Umno Scholarship and Umno College to be set up in order to project the role of the party in youth development.

It was reported that Mukhriz had stressed the term Umno in the endeavours so that Bumiputeras, in particular, could appreciate the partys contribution.
Twitter users were merciless in their criticism of the Umno College idea, with some creating imaginary courses which could be offered.
User jimspc commented, Bach in Internal Diplomacy major in Dictatorship. Another user comradenami twitted, Bachelor of Science of Blackouting so they can do more blackouts in election counting center. User rastom tweeted, Subjek teras #KolejUMNO Tipulogy I, II, III (wajib 3 tahun) (compulsory subject for three years at Kolej Trickology I,II, and III).

Meanwhile, zulf_o took a stab at the partys alleged corrupt tender process twitting, Ijazah Sarjana Muda Pembahagian Tender at least 10% komisyen, itu wajib tahu (Degree in tender allocation at least 10% commission, that is compulsory knowledge).
Another user aimannnn commented, Ijazah Sarjana Muda Persumpahan Laknat (Bachelors in oath taking).
This was in referrence to businessman Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, one of three who exposed a sex video implicating Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, taking an Islamic oath last Friday that it was Anwar in the video.
Other users took swipes at the partys ceremonial rituals. User hasbidin twitted, Sebelum masuk kelas ada perhimpunan. nyanyi lagu umno dulu. (Umno party song will be sang at the assembly befo! re class es start).
One user tuzaifah twitted, Kene bawak keris tiap2 hari sebagai punch card.Nk masuk kelas kene cucuk keris kat sesondol pintu baru leh masuk (One wold have to bring along the keris to swipe at the door, instead of a punch card, in order to gain entrance). The keris, a Malay traditional dagger, is part of Umnos logo.
Mukhriz had made the proposal last week during an Umno Youth event in Papar, Sabah.
It was not clear if only Umno members and their children would be given entry as he later added that both these institutions should also benefit every community whom we serve.
It is common for political parties to fund educational institutions in Malaysia. The Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST) University is set up by the educational arm of MIC and Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR) College is funded by MCA. Both institutes are open to all races.

Apakah Eskay nak tuduh Anwar rogol si jalang pula.....

- wfauzdin ns.

Why was QE Hospital hastily demolished?

MalaysiaKini - KOTA KINABALU: The state government may have demolished one of its buildings with undue haste.
According to new information, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital which was razed several months ago was structurally sound and damaged portions could have been saved.
The iconic eight-storey tower block that was opened in 1981 was demolished in haste last year to make way for a 10-storey
twin tower project.

It was done so fast before any discussions could be made (on repairing the building), said a knowledgeable source.
The source cited the case of another multi-storey building in the city that was once condemned and left vacant for years and which had recently been refurbished and turned into a hotel.
The same could have been done for the QEH. If the Nautica building can be changed from unsafe to safe, the QEH was a hundred times stronger, said the source.
The commonly held believe is that vested interest was involved in the hasty condemnation and demolition of the hospital.
Just imagine, putting a 10 storey twin towers is going to be very lucrative for whoever gets the contract, added the source.
Consultant engineering firm Kumpulan Ikram Sdn Bhd and the Public Works Department have justified the demolition on the grounds that the buildings would not stand for long and it was uneconomical to repair.
Poor planning

The demolition of the QEH Tower block, which acted as the main referral hospital in the state, caused a massive headache for health services with patients having to be shuttled around from hospital to hospital within the ! state.
The city has been without a general hospital for almost three years while a private hospital, Sabah Medical Centre, has been purchased and is being renovated to act as a substitute until the completion of the new hospital blocks.
Since 2008, medical workers and patients have criticised the poor planning by the government which has put patients who are already suffering major illnesses and injuries to further suffering.
QEH was declared unsafe in October 2008 during an engineering evaluation by Kumpulan Ikram Sdn Bhd and the Public Works Department.
Chief Minister Musa Aman later announced that the hospital was to be relocated and it would be replaced with a twin towers that would house 660 beds.
Since then, the wail of ambulance sirens have resounded around the city and surrounding districts as they shuttle patients from hospital to hospital.

Anwar and PAS are the! key to the opposition Malay vote.

Police trying to find source of sex vid copies

May 04, 2011

Ismail revealed that more people have been sent the sex video. — file pic

KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 — The police are attempting to trace the people responsible for distributing a sex video allegedly of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, after a lawmaker was mailed a copy of the clip said to be in the sole possession of the authorities.

On Saturday, Kapar MP S. Manikavasagam had received a compact disc (CD) containing the full version of the sex video at his parliamentary office, and had demanded an explanation from the police.

Today, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar revealed that several other people have also received copies of the CD in their mail.

“We can confirm that a number of VIPs including politicians have received copies of the video believed to have been distributed by certain parties. Several police reports have been lodged,” he was quoted by state news agency Bernama.

The video first made headlines on March 21 after it was aired to selected media outlets at the Carcosa Seri Negara by an individual identifying himself as “Datuk T”.

Two days after the screening, the trio of Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, former Malacca chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik and Perkasa treasurer-general Datuk Shuib Lazim came forward to reveal themselves collectively as “Datuk T”.

Following a police investigation into the screening, the trio claimed to have surrendered the only extant copy of the sex video to the police.

The unedited video had also been uploaded to video sharing website YouTube on April 28, but was taken down shortly after for violating the site’s terms of usage. Prior to that, two “teasers” of the clip had also been uploaded to the same site.

The police have denied involvement over the leaks.

Sarbani deathfall: Police record statements from new witnesses

MalaysiaKini - Police have recorded statements from new witnesses to assist in the investigation into the death of a Selangor Customs Department assistant director.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah said the investigation papers would be sent to the Attorney-General by Friday next week at the latest for further action.

"That's the nature of any investigation. We'll call up new witnesses if the need arises," he told reporters after attending a debate competition here Wednesday.

Zulkifli also said that police were compiling certain documents in connection with the case.

Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed, 56, who was attached to the Port Klang Customs office, was found sprawled on the badminton court at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) building in Jalan Cochrane, here, on April 6.

He had reportedly gone there to meet an investigating officer in connection with graft and money laundering cases involving 62 Customs officers.

Police had earlier recorded statements from 44 witnesses before the investigation papers sent to the Attorney-General were returned to them.

Longing For A Free Mind (Part 9 of 14)

Longing For A Free Mind (Part 9 of 14)

[Presented at the Fifth Annual Alif Ba Ta Conference at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ, organized by UMNO Club of New York-New Jersey, January 29, 2011.]

Free Minds in Our Legends and History

In Sulalatus Salatin (Malay Annals) there is the story of Temasek (old Singapore) being regularly invaded by a school of flying swordfish. Hundreds fell victim, impaled by the sharp snouts of the fish. All efforts at combating this piscine scourge were unsuccessful.

That is, until a young boy suggested to the sultan to plant a row of banana stems along the shore. In that way, Hang Nadim told the sultan, when those flying fish darted onshore, they would be impaled on the soft stems.

The scheme worked wonderfully well, and the pleased sultan decided to honor the young man. The sultans advisors however, had second thoughts. If that youth could dream up such a brilliant scheme at a young age, they convinced the sultan, imagine what else would he think of later as an adult. Sensing a future threat, the sultan had Hang Nadim executed instead. Imagine!

That young man certainly had a free mind. He could, to borrow the current clich, think outside the box. He was certainly not at all shy in telling the sultan what to do. In a deeply feudal society, as Malay society was then (still is), that took great courage.

That boy paid dearly for his courage and free-mindedness. Tragic as that is, the far greater tragedy is borne by society. Executing that young man not only deprives the society of its brightest talent, potentially its future Munshi Abdullah or Datuk Onn, but also sends a clear message that it is does not pay in fact downright dangerous to be innovative or original. Such a society can never aspire to greatness. That is a very steep price.

Lest you might conclude that this malady is peculiar only to Malay sultans, let! me take you back to Czarist Russia. Legend has it that after the impressive St. Basils Cathedral on Red Square was built, Ivan the Terrible had the architect blinded lest he would recreate another rivaling masterpiece. In China, the First Qin Emperor had all the workers of his fantastically elaborate tomb killed lest they might reveal its secrets!

Of the three Russian czars, Chinese emperors, and Malay sultans only Malay sultans still exist. I let you decide whether that is a compliment for the sultans or an indictment of our society.

If you kill off all your bright talents, a generation or two later you would have a society of dumbbells. When the Moguls invaded the Muslim heartland, the first thing they did was to kill off the intellectuals and luminaries, effectively decapitating that society and culture. Then the Moguls could easily colonize and subjugate the rest.

The sultans treatment of Hang Nadim reminded me of the ancient practices of the Mayans where they sacrificed their most beautiful virgins by throwing them into the dungeon to please the Gods. A few generations later and all the babies in the community were ugly, as the gorgeous potential mothers had been sacrificed.

In Hikayat Hang Tuah (The Legend of Hang Tuah) we have the two protagonists in the service of the sultan. One is Hang Tuah, the hero and eponymous legend. Even the name is auspicious; Tuah, the blessed one! In contrast, his nemesis Hang Jebat rhymes with yang jahat, the sinister one.

The legend began in childhood with the pair, together with another three, bonding as brothers. Later they were hulubalangs in the service of the sultan, in the manner of King Arthurs Knights of the Round Table, minus the equality implied by the round table. Hang Tuah, being numero uno, took his loyalty to the sultan to extremes, even lying on his behalf to deceive a young princess. Soon however, palace intrigue took over and Tu! ah was c harged with treason and summarily sentenced to death by the sultan.

The sultan replaced Tuah with Jebat. On discovering the grave injustice perpetrated on his dear friend, Jebat relentlessly pursued the guilty parties. Threatened, the sultan summoned his chief minister who suggested that the sultan recall Hang Tuah whom the minister had secretly protected. Tuah, ever loyal to his sultan despite the earlier death sentence, returned to protect him. The climax had the two childhood buddies battling it out in a duel, with Tuah killing Jebat.

The conventional wisdom has Tuah as the hero, ready to defend the sultan, right or wrong. The free-minded thinker Kassim Ahmad, on re-examining the legend, concluded otherwise. Tuah, far from being the hero, is the archetypical palace sycophant willing to kill his dear childhood friend in order to regain the sultans favor, even that of an unjust sultan. Jebat is the genuine hero, willingly sacrificing his life to right a gross injustice. Where Tuah is loyal to the person of the sultan; Jebat is loyal to the principle of justice.

Tuah conveniently wraps his opportunist core in the well worn but expedient cloak of loyalty. Today our society is plagued with hordes of Hang Tuahs; what we sorely lack are leaders in the mold of Hang Jebat.

Earlier I mentioned the pivotal role of Datuk Onn in derailing the Malayan Union. He was a senior civil servant at the time, a significant and rare achievement for a native. Had he been a Hang Tuah, ever loyal to the British, there would be no limit to the height of his achievement, perhaps becoming the first native Governor of a Malayan Union.

Instead, like Jebat, Onn saw the grave injustice perpetrated upon Malays by the colonialists in cahoots with the sultans. He heard the braying of the donkey, the sultans selling out our country. He saw them repeating what their brother Sultan of Johor did with Singapore 127 years earlier.

! T he pathetic aspect of the Malayan Union treaty, like the earlier ceding of Singapore, was how easy those sultans capitulated. Sir Harold MacMichael, the British point man, took only a few months to secure the agreement, with not a whimper of protest. Some of the sultans took only a day or two to ratify the agreement. The few who had flashes of courage quickly backed down under threat of being replaced or prosecuted for presumed collaboration with the Japanese during the war.

It turned out that our sultans Allahs representatives on earth too menurut arahan, not from Him however, but from Sir Harold. Thanks to Datuk Onn, the Union treaty was rescinded just two months shy of its second anniversary. Onn had taken on the mighty Brits and prevailed, with no help from the sultans! He did it without being biadap (treasonous) or resorting to armed insurrections.

It is ironic that Onn would be instrumental in this, for earlier the Sultan of Johor, Onns own ruler, had banished him for daring to criticize the sultan. If Onn had been concerned with settling old scores, and at the same time endear himself to the British, he would let the treaty be, and those sultans would today be reduced to the status of the Sultan of Sulu, or suffer the fate of the Chinese emperors and Russian czars.

Further back there was Munshi Abdullah. Today he is held in low esteem and dismissed as a brown Mat Salleh by revisionist historians and self-proclaimed champions of our race. They even ridicule his impure Malay heritage. These nationalists are perturbed that Abdullah free-mindedness let him collaborate with the colonialists. He even translated the bible!

To Munshi Abdullah however, working with the colonialists meant the opportunity to expand his intellectual horizon and learn the advances of the West. Most of all he wanted to understand what made the British tick. When they invited him to visit a warship, he was not a mere casual tourist. ! He recor ded his experiences, complete with drawings of the contraption, and then challenged his readers to wonder how it was that British minds could invent such awesome machines. Today, more than a century and a half later, we are still benefiting from his writings and wisdom. As for the sultan at the time, we do not remember his name.

Hang Jebat and Hang Nadim are but characters in our legends, but the chronicles of their exploits serve as eternal lessons. Munshi Abdullah and Datuk Onn were giants in our history, but being technology students, you may not have heard of or find them interesting. So permit me to cite a contemporary figure.

Many of you know of Ungku Aziz, a man of many firsts. I will not enumerate them as they are not pertinent to my story. To me, he is a man whose insight on rural (and thus Malay) poverty is unmatched. Equally unmatched is our leaders inability or unwillingness to tap his vast expertise.

I have not been privileged to meet this eminent economist. My first introduction to him was as a secondary school student in the late 1950s visiting the University of Malaya campus. There was a lull in our schedule and we were let loose in the library. Among the stacks of books there was one that attracted my attention, a thick volume, The Fragmentation of Estates. On it was the authors name, Ungku A. Aziz.

What drew my attention was of course the authors name. In those days it was rare to see a Malay name attached to a book, except perhaps some trashy novels on jinns and hookers. Even though I did not understand a word in the book, nonetheless it made a huge impression on me. Here I was a high school student; I had difficulty even reading my textbooks, and they were considerably thinner. Yet there was this thick volume on a substantive topic written by a Malay. It inspired me! I wondered whether someday I too could have my name appended to a book.

Unlike others who are content merely with ! catalogi ng the ills of Malay society and then dredging up old ugly stereotypes to explain our backwardness, Ungku Aziz approached the problem scientifically, meaning, empirically. He actually studied poor rural Malay families, from measuring the heights and weights of their children (an indicator of nutritional status and thus economic level) to the number of sarongs per household his famous sarong index of rural poverty.

One of his studies debunked the view widely held (then as well as now, and not just by non-Malays) that Malays do not save or respond to modern economic incentives. Indeed a casual observer would conclude similarly, seeing the small number of accounts in financial institutions held by Malays. When the British tried increasing the interest rates of postal savings accounts to encourage Malays to save, our folks did not respond.

In his studies Ungku Aziz discovered that on the contrary, Malays were indeed diligent savers as attested by the ubiquitous bamboo tabongs in Malay homes. We saved for weddings and of course for a pilgrimage to Mecca, the aspiration of all Muslims. However we did not use savings institutions because of our religious prohibitions against interest earnings.

It is a tribute to the genius of Ungku Aziz that he not only identified the problem correctly (the key towards solving it) but went on to create institutions that would cater to the specific needs of Malays. Thus was born Tabung Haji, a mutual fund-like financial institution that takes in Malay savings, especially from rural areas, and invest them in halal enterprises (meaning, no casinos and breweries). The returns on such investments were rightly labeled as faedah (dividends) and not bunga (interests), thus taking care of our religious sensitivities.

Today Tabung Haji is one of the largest financial institutions in Southeast Asia, a tribute to the brilliance of one man, one whose mind was not trapped by conventional wisdom.!

Today we have many more Malay economists, some with impressive doctorates from elite universities. Thus you would expect a quantum leap in the number of innovations like Tabung Haji to cater to our special and specific needs. Alas that is not so. Instead what we have are a plethora of Government-linked Companies more adept at sucking precious public funds and then squandering them.

Even Tabung Haji has not demonstrated any innovation since its inception. No one has carried the ball forward. I would have thought those eminently trained economists that Prime Minister Najib brags about being on his team could expand Tabungs reach, like catering for Muslims in the region or offering services to our entrepreneurs. As you can see, impressive academic qualifications alone do not equal or signal free and innovative minds.

Ungku Aziz is still alive, but I reckon few of you would recognize his name much less his accomplishments. That reveals more about our society than about the man.
