Taib Mahmud: Kalau Nak Berhenti Kerja, Kenapa Bertanding Lagi?

Itulah soalan yang menggangu benak Tulang Besi. Kalau Taib Mahmud benar2 ikhlas mahu berhenti kerja, mengapa Taib Mahmud terus bertanding?

Apakah rakyat Sarawak mahu mengambil risiko?

Pokoknya rakyat sarawak MESTI mengubah kerajaan. Ingat, Ketua MEnteri sebelum Taib Mahmud pun bukan orang lain. Pakcik Taib Mahmud juga.

Lepas ni mungkin adik Taib Mahmud, lepas tu sepupu Taib Mahmud, lepas tu anak Taib Mahmud. itulah yang akan terjadi sekiranya Taib Mahmud terus memerintah Sarawak.

BERTUKARLAH

Tulang Besi

ps Tulang Besi pernah dengar seorang veteran politik Sarawak bercerita berkenaan peristiwa "Ming Court".

BN offering between RM100-200 for your votes...

penans meet suhakam 130208 see chee howSarawak PKR information chief and candidate for the Batu Lintang seat, lawyer See Chee How(right), has told Malaysiakini that Kuching voters are being offered between RM100 and RM200 for their votes in the upcoming state polls.

"We are fighting an uphill battle, because we heard that they are buying votes in Stutong, in the market and the nearby area. So it's not going to be easy.

"We have (reports from) people who were offered money for their votes. We heard this when we were visiting the market this morning. The hawkers refused to give their ICs (to the people offering bribes). I don't know to what extent that might affect the voting on April 16."

See described similar tactics being employed in Pending, another constituency nearby, where incumbent DAP lawyer Violet Yong is facing a challenge from Sarawak United People's Party candidate, Dr Sim Kui Hian.

"One particular woman was offered RM100 in Stutong, but Violet told me that in her area, some were offered RM200 per vote. They did not make reports to the police or the Election Commission, because these are hawkers and these are people who would not go and approach the police."

See observed drily that the alleged vote-buying contrasted sharply with claims by his opponent Sih Hua Tong that Sih would stand up against corruption in the government, if SUPP recaptures Batu Lintang.

NONESih's (left) open letter to voters stirred up some confusion, on both sides of the political divide. He made a bizarre promise to be "f! earless and not to succumb to any pressure from the authorities" and to "fight endlessly and tirelessly towards the eradication of all forms of corruption and abuse of power within and outside the government".

At the same time, SUPP leaders have been vehemently refuting allegations that Chief Minister Taib Mahmud is corrupt, and have been insisting that the international reports are lies.

"This makes Sih appear to be a very insincere person, because he has been a private political secretary to Chief Minister Taib for so many years. We ask him to show us his report card, what he has done for the anti-corruption (effort) and to check abuse of power," the PKR candidate said.

"Being the political secretary, an agent of Taib Mahmud, I'm sure he cannot deliver what he promised in his letter to the voters. He knows that corruption is rampant."

See reiterated Pakatan's campaign message, calling for a change of Taib's regime.

Pakatan Rakyat has been exploiting Taib's lack of popularity in urban areas. Taib's extraordinary wealth, and the allegations that his family thrived on suspect land deals and timber concessions during his three decades in power, have caused unease throughout the SUPP ranks.

"The contest in Batu Lintang is not really us against Sih Hua Tong, but Pakatan against BN, and our fight against Taib," See asserted.

SUPP president Dr George Chan(below) and Sih have been trying to protect the BN and Taib, he went on.

"Obviously they're not doing a good job," he said with a hint of a smile.

Deserted in droves

See, a respected land rights lawyer, was dismissive of Taib's recent promise in Sibu to extend urban land leases for 10 years for a nominal fee of RM1.

Taib conceded this proposed reduction of charges in an attempt to quell a rebellion among urban voters over the spiraling costs of paying to renew the land leases for their properties.

Despite the high charges, many land leases only run for 60 years. Following this, the state takes over the land.

As a consequence, urban voters deserted the SUPP in droves in 2006. Government takeovers of private land for so-called 'development', made compulsory under the controversial Section 47 of the Land Code, further fuelled voters' anger.

The DAP and PKR have capitalised on these land issues, with some success, as an abuse of Taib's wide-ranging powers as minister for planning and natural resources. One recent example was in Bako, less than an hour's drive from Kuching.

"Why would you want to go for Taib's promise when we all know that he cannot deliver on his promises?" See maintained."He said he wants to make Sarawak the richest state if BN is given the mandate again. We say no.

"Thirty years ago, you inherited one of the richest states and you turned it into one of the poorest states. How can we trust you now, if you are given another two years or three years, when you say you are going to turn Sarawak into the richest state? That's rubbish."

Pakatan has pledged that if it is elected, renewal of land leases would be automatic, and would run for 99 years, and not the usual 60 years as is current practice. If land is taken over under Section 47 and is not used, as in Bako, the acquisition would automatically lapse after two years, See explained.

Pakatan's manifesto also promises a Land Reform Commission to protect native customary rights to land. See emphasised that land reform is a state-w! ide poli tical issue, relevant to all 71 seats being contested in the election, urban and rural alike.

"Taib doesn't care whether you're Chinese, you're Malay, you're Iban, he just takes the land as he wants it. Our figures show his family, his BN cronies, his relatives and friends have taken 1.5 million ha of land in Sarawak now," he said.

Sarawak's land area covers 12.4 million ha, most of it mountainous. "Land-grabs are colour blind," he concluded.

Lim Kit Siang asks Najib to establish RCI to predict when will his DAP join BN ... ?

Warning to Najib not to discredit RCI by setting one to serve dishonourable and selfish political objectives and challenge to set up 5 RCIs on pressing issues of public importance

PARKING FAIL

The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak must be warned that he should not discredit the concept of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI), which is an important device to establish government transparency, integrity and good governance, as by setting one to serve dishonourable and selfish political objectives as into the Carcosa sex video tape scandal.

Under the Barisan Nasional, public confidence in more and more key national institutions and concepts have plunged to unprecedented lows, whether it be the judiciary, the elections commission, the police, the anti-corruption agency.

All efforts by Najib under his 1Malaysia Government Transformation Programme (GTP) in the past two years had failed to check the rot as things have got worse instead of better.

For instance, in a matter of two years, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has proved to be an even greater failure than its predecessor, the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) in securing public confidence in its efficiency, independence and professionalism in combating corruption, particular the “grand corruption” of political “sharks” and their cronies despite getting more powers, funds and staffing from Parliament.

Now, Malaysians don’t even trust the MACC with their personal safety after the scandalous tragedies of Teoh Beng Hock who fell to his death from the 14th floor of MACC headquarters in Shah Alam on July 16,2009 and Ahmad Sarbani Mohamad who fell to his death from the third floor of MACC office in Jalan Cochrane, Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

It will a real national tragedy if the RCI concept is discredited because it is abused to serve dishonourable political objectives to attack opponents in the political arena, as in the Carcosa sex video tape scandal, instead of serving national or public purpose.

The real issue of national public importance in the Carcosa sex video tape scandal is why after three weeks, the three persons constituting “Datuk T” have not been arrested and charged in court for offences under the Penal Code and Film Censorship Act when they had admitted to the crimes in the cloak-and-dagger illegal screening of offensive videotape in Carcosa on March 21?

If Najib continues to ignore the failure of the Attorney-General and the Police to uphold the law by failing to arrest and prosecute the three “Datuk Ts”, setting up instead a RCI into the Carcosa sex video tape to pursue a political vendetta against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, then the biggest casualty will be the entire concept of RCI as an important vehicle to ensure government transparency, integrity and good governance as well as Najib’s 1Malaysia GTP.

Sarawakians and Malaysians are entitled not only to question the motives of Najib, but his fitness to continue as Prime Minister, if he could set up a RCI for the Carcosa sex videotape just for the purpose to persecute and pillory Anwar Ibrahim when there are so many important public issues which deserve RCI treatment.

Since Najib is going to park himself in Sarawak for the state general elections campaign until the very end, I challenge Najib to set up five RCIs which are of great concern and import to the people of Sarawak, viz:

1. RCI into the mysterious death of Sarawak Department of Environment investigating officer Rumie Azzan who fell to his death from the 9th floor of Sarawak Timber Association (STA) in Kuching on 17th September 2004 before 11 am, as his family suspected that he was murdered as he was investigating a major environmental case in the state.

2. RCI into the mountain of allegations of corruption and abuses of power against the Sarawak Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud

3. RCI as to how in 30 years, Sarawak had degenerated into one of the poorest states in Malaysia when it is one of the richest states in terms of natural resources and yet could produce a Chief Minister who is one of the richest men not only in Sarawak and Malaysia, but the world?

4. RCI into the deteriorating state of religious freedom in Sarawak in the past three decades.

5. RCI into why the hopes and dreams of Sarawakians in the formation of Malaysia 48 years ago in 1963 – that Sarawak can enjoy the full fruits of development comparable to those enjoyed in Peninsular Malaysia – had failed and even causing a major brain drain of Sarawakians whether to other parts of Malaysia or to other countries.

Let SUPP President Tan Sri Dr. George Chan explain whether he dare to support the call to the Prime Minister to announce the establishment of these 5 RCIs during the Sarawak general election campaign?

(Media Conference Statement in Miri on Sunday, 10th April 2011 at 12 noon)

Taib should have left 5 years ago....

NONEPakatan Rakyat leaders have ridiculed the prime minister for his claim that long-serving Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud will step down.

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim referred to Najib Abdul Razak's speech last night, during which the announcement was made.

Is this another cheap gimmick by Najib to cloud the vision of the public? If it is true that Taib will step down, the question is when? 2015? 2020? Anwar asked at a press conference in Kuching today.

Secondly, who is his successor? Is it going to be his brother, who has failed to groom his son as a successor? This must be answered. Asked about a suitable date for Taib to step down, Anwar replied: Five years ago. He should not be contesting (in this election)."

Last night, Najib tried to calm obviously growing urban disenchantment with Taib who is the focal point of Pakatan Rakyat's campaign by promising that Taib will step down, but stopped short of setting a deadline.

His speech, coupled with the fact that he is camping himself in Sarawak from yesterday up to the eve of polls, signals that Taib may be falling out of Putrajaya's favour.

NONE

In a related development, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution produced a newspaper clipping dated Nov 7, 1995 which quoted Taib as saying that he would step down in five years.

Saifuddin said that, when the deadline arrived in 2000, even the most powerful prime minister in the nation's history Dr Mahathir Mohamad could not hold Taib to his word.

Thus, he rationalised that Najib, who ha! s not he ld a general election to seek his own mandate, would not be powerful enough to ensure that Taib keeps his word.

Saifuddin said that now that Najib had given his assurance that Taib would step down, it would appear that Putrajaya is now dictating Sarawak's future. Should Taib hang on to his post, that this is likely to cause fissures between Sarawak and Putrajaya.

This is something that the voters have to keep in mind, Saifuddin said.

HNONEeadless state cabinet

The DAP jumped at the opportunity to present the Sarawak BN government as a "headless cabinet" following Najib's strong reiteration that Taib is on his way out. State party chief Wong Ho Leng (left) said the announcement does not hold much water as Najib has failed not only to name a date for Taib's succession, but to name the successor.

"This is an election to choose a new government. They should announce the (candidate to lead the government) now and let everyone make the evaluation," he told reporters in Sibu today.

Ever sceptical, Wong said that Najib's announcement that Taib will step down "at the right time" only smacks of insincerity. Najib, who is in Sarawak until Friday, had urged Sarawakians yesterday to "believe (him)" that Taib will soon end his 30-year tenure as chief minister.

Taib, however, has refused to name a successor and was quoted as saying he will quit in two or three years' time - a promise heard before. NONE

Responding to this, DAP publicity chief Tony Pua said that two or three years' time will mean after the general election. Will h e then make sure that he does not stand in the next election? Pua asked, echoing Wong's scepticism when met in Kuching today.

If anything, said Pua, the announcement is proof that Taib is a burden to BN in its state election campaign. When you read the actual text of Najib's speech you will see that he is not saying anything new (about Taib's resignation but) it shows that Taib's (tenure) is an issue. It shows that the federal government is trying to get rid of Taib and Najib is trying to figure out how to do it, he said.

DAP national secretary-general challenged Taib to produce a resignation letter if he is serious about quitting. "The proof of the pudding is in the eating. If he wants to resign then show us the resignation letter. Resign now. He said three years, but (SUPP president Dr) George Chan in 2006 said he'd resign in one year and now he's standing in election, with a new wife in tow," he quipped.

"The way Najib keeps saying that Taib will step down shows that not only the people but even BN leaders don't believe it. As Shakespeare wrote, '...he doth protest too much'."

State in Taib's hand

But unlike in the 1980s, where a coup to oust Taib needed sponsorship from federal-level BN sponsorship, Pua said Sarawak BN now holds the bargaining chips. All of state power is under Taib. You cannot say 'don't give projects to your son'. What can you do if he does?

Without (the support) of Sarawak the BN federal government can fall. BN is dependent on Sarawak MPs - there are 31 of them - to form the government, he said. Najib's presence in Sarawak is read by pundits as a sign of distrust of Sarawak BN which, having not experienced heavy losses in the 2008 general election, has yet to learn to deal with Pakatan Rakyat's attacks.

Najib is being accompanied by members of his cabinet and features of BN's campaign in the pe! ninsula are becoming more apparent in Sarawak. The 'divide and rule' element, for example, has reared its ugly head with SUPP telling the Chinese that voting them out will mean losing Chinese representation in government.

In Malay-majority areas like Satok, a fear campaign has been launched to frighten Muslim voters against voting for Pakatan, which has mooted a Christian Orang Ulu as chief minister if the coalition wrests power from the BN. At the same time, BN banners in Kuching warn that a vote for PKR is a vote for an Islamic state, a fear tactic heavily used by MCA in the peninsula.

najib stutong markets 110411

Mr.Deal or No Deal terurns

Najib has returned to his Mr Deal-or-No-Deal persona, oft seen during by-elections, telling those he met in Stutong in Kuching that he can solve their problems but only if they help resolve April 16 (polling day) for BN.

He told Bukit Saban constituents that any "love letters" (applications for allocation) will be considered only after April 16, after he sees a windfall of votes there.

Najib's presence is being seen as double standards by Lim, who insisted that Pakatan's enemy No. 1 in Sarawak is still Pek Moh - as Taib is known in Hokkien, for his white hair. We're not criticising Najib for campaigning here, he's Malaysian (and) he has a right to campaign. But we are saying that PBB and SUPP have double standards.

Why can they do it and we can't? he asked reporters in Kuching. The Sarawak BN government had previously tabled a motion in the state assembly to reject Western (Malaysian) influence brought in by 'peninsula eleme! nts'.

Ironically, Deputy Prime Minister and Johor-born Muhyiddin Yassin too has called on Sarawakians to turn their back on ghosts from the peninsula. PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's statement yesterday claiming that Najib is in town because he distrusts Taib has also been turned on its head, with Pakatan national leaders accused of calling the kettle black.

Defending Sarawak DAP however, Kuching incumbent Chong Chieng Jen said: We have always practised an open policy towards our national leaders, unlike BN which tabled that motion in the assembly.

Provokasi BN di ceramah Anwar....

Siri ceramah Ketua Umum KEADILAN, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim terus mendapat sambutan luar biasa apabila puluhan ribu rakyat sarawak membanjiri beberapa lokasi berbeza di sini, malam tadi .

Di Batu Kawah Bridge, sokongan luar biasa terhadap Pakatan Rakyat ketara pada majlis anjuran DAP yang turut membariskan Mursyidul Am Pas, Tuan Guru Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat dan Ketua Menteri Pulau Pinang, Lim Guan Eng.

Jalan raya menuju ke lokasi ceramah penuh sesak menyebabkan sebahagian meletakkan kenderaan di seberang jambatan dan berjalan kaki sejauh kira-kira lima kilometer.

Slogan Ubah Perintah (tukar kerajaan) kini menjadi ungkapan popular di kalangan penduduk Sarawak pelbagai etnik lantaran muak dengan pentadbiran Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Kawasan Melayu

Dalam ucapan Calon N7 Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Samariang, Zulrusdi Mohamad Hol, beliau menuntut rakyat Sarawak kembali mengingati perjuangan tokoh kemerdekaan Sarawak.

Bila tiba musim pilihan raya, baru mereka mahu datang.

Diberi makan, ucap terima kasih. Diberi baju, kain, beras gula, ambil tetapi jangan lupa undi KEADILAN, kata Anwar disambut dengan tepukan gemuruh hadirin.

Dry taps in Sarawak though dams around.....

NONELocated about 60km southwest of Kuching, Kampung Bengoh is a quiet Bidayuh village with two sundry shops, a small primary school, no restaurants and a close-knit community.

Often, however, the tranquility of the village is shattered by the roar of lorries and trucks, for the home to about 200 sits squarely in between a RM310 million Bengoh Dam and a quarry opened to supply limestone for the project. Work on the dam, meant to supply freshwater to Kuching and its surrounding areas, began in 2007 amidst protests, and is now in its final stages and ahead of schedule. Despite having to sacrifice their homes and farms on their native customary lands for the project, the villagers do not have treated running water.

NONEIn Kampung Bengoh, which is en route to luxury resort Borneo Highlands, water is sourced from the mountains through a gravity-fed system with villagers pooling RM10 per person every year and taking turns to maintain the system.

"It's okay for houses in low areas but you can't push the water up to houses on hills. The water is straight from the river so you have to be careful or else you'll end up with a leech in your stomach," said a man met during Malaysiakini's visit there on Friday.

As proof, his friend turns on the tap to show water barely trickling out.

NONE"Like rat's piss," quipped his friend, who has the Iban battle cry 'Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban' (As long as I breathe, I must fight) tattooed on his arm (left! ).< br>
The man, who declined to be named for fear of jeopardising his position as a civil servant, grew up in the village but is now living in more urban Bidayuh-majority Tasik Biru in nearby Bau.

His parents and extended family, however, still live in the village. He is one of many of young Bidayuh who have moved out of their villages but still maintain close ties.

Taxes paid but no land titles

Young men like him, who had to move away as teenagers to attend secondary school, are unabashed about their views, sharing their dissent with the older folks at home.

But even some who have lived there all their lives appear not too happy with the government, hinting that their support is not for Bengoh incumbent SUPP candidate Jerip Susil.

Akiu Nora's biggest concern is land rights - an awareness brought about by the construction of the massive dam a stone's throw away.

NONEThere are now two cases pending against subsidiaries of Naim Holdings - a conglomerate building the dam and operating the quarry - by Kampung Bengoh villagers and those displaced by the dam from nearby villages.

"They took away people's farm land to build the dam, but the compensation was unsatisfactory. They don't really tell us how they tally the amount for compensation," said the 63-year-old farmer.

Four villages, or 1,600 people, have had to be resettled because of the dam, and the villagers were told to buy houses in the new Kampung Tun Razak - a name Akiu finds amusing - for RM48,000 each.

NONE"For us, we didn't have to move, but you never know. What if they want us to relocate after the dam is impounded?" said Akiu (right).

"The land that this house sits on doesn't have a title either, but the authorities came to do a survey for assessment fees. We pay the fees every year, but we don't have land titles."

At present Naim Holdings, a company which has links to Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud's family, is facing two court battles pertaining to native customary rights claim - one for land where the dam is constructed and the other for the quarry.

'Infinite jury' over Al-Kitan issue

In the suit he filed along with six others, village chief Kayis Genyai, 81, said that he can prove the local community's ties to the parcel of land called Derod Mawah back to the 1930s.

NONEKayis, who claimed to be part of Iban leader Temenggung Jugah Bareing's delegation to Kuala Lumpur in 1962 prior to the formation of Malaysia, added that the caves where the stones are extracted also provide the villagers with income. Birds' nests are collected there at least once a month and are sold for RM500 to RM700 a month.

According to Naim Holding's quarterly report published on March 3, the High Court has yet to set a date for the quarry suit (for which a stop-work order application has been dismissed), while the dam suit has been fixed for trial on June 27.

Land issues also plague Bidayuh communities in Opar and Tasik Biru, and are tipped by! pundits to be the straw that could break BN's back in these constituencies.

VillagerBesides worries about land, the villagers, who are almost exclusively Christian, seem particularly upset at the impoundment and stamping of the Al-Kitab by the federal government.

The villagers may not have running water or telephone lines, but have electricity supply and subscribe to satellite television Astro, with which they keep abreast with current affairs.

"We are worried about this Bible issue. They tell us we cannot use the word 'Allah'. But I have used this word since I was born," said Akiu.

NONEThe younger folk were more vocal. Said the civil servant: "I had a dream about this. I dreamt that I put up signs that said 'Those who vote for BN are anti-Christian' because they are! How can you say 1Malaysia and do this?

"It was an infinite injury. We can no longer trust BN 100 percent. Nothing hurts more than people saying that your religion has no right," he said to nods around the table.

BN sorting out land issue

Quick to rectify this, however, the BN on Saturday embarked on a walkabout in the area, including visits to several churches by SUPP candidate Jerip and a fellow Christian leader, Minister of Science and Technology Maximus Ongkili, who came bearing gifts.

NONEContacted yesterday, Jerip, who won in 2006 against Snap with a majority of close to 4,000 claims that the many PKR flags lining his constituency is not a reflection of ! the comm unity's support for the party.

In fact, he said, BN had purposely allowed the peninsular-based party to raise their flags to "see how much influence they have". He also complained that BN's campaign banners were vandalised.

Near Kampung Benuk, for example, a banner with Jerip's face was spray-painted.

"This is a reflection of the kind of party PKR is. They have anger against the BN for no reason. It is impolite," he said. He doubted that it was the work of the mostly affable and polite locals, who are unlikely to do so even when angry.

bengoh dam sarawak 191208He added that the issues, which those approached by Malaysiakini had raised, are already being resolved by the ruling coalition.

The BN government, he said, is taking the matter very seriously by undertaking perimeter surveys and empowering the villagers to survey land themselves using GPS markers.

"We are now conducting seminars to teach the villagers how to do this so that we can resolve border disputes. Once the land is marked, we can take this to the Land Survey Department, which will recognise the document ... and then give out the land titles," he said.

Time is running out for BN?

But what about the greatest irony of all, the lack of treated fresh water?

NONE"Well, they have gravity pipes now, don't they? Oh, you mean treated water. Did you see the pipes lined up on the roadsides? That's to supply water to the villages from Batu Kitang (treatment plant) ... but these things take time," he said.

Time, however, may not be on BN's side.

"You know they say that voting for SUPP is like voting for (chief minist! er Abdul ) Taib Mahmud? I completely agree. He's been there too long. It's time to step aside for someone younger and better," said Akiu, flashing a smile.

However, BN too has reason to smile - all six Bidayuh-majority seats face multi-cornered fights in the April 16 state election.Bengoh and Tarat are being contested by BN, Sarawak National Party (Snap) and PKR.

Meanwhile, the other Bidayuh-majority seats -Tasik Biru,Kedup,Tebedu and Opar - are also vied by independent candidates.- Aidila Razak

< br>"Jadi pilih calon Pakatan Rakyat. Kalau calon DAP bertanding, pangkah DAP, kalau PKR tanding, pangkah PKR, kalau PAS tanding pangkah PAS," katanya yang turut mendapat tepukan gemuruh hadirin.

'Super Sunday' sweeps through Sarawak....

Batu Kawah

The mercury in Sarawak rose a couple of notches on a usually quiet Sunday night as BN and Pakatan Rakyat squared off in a show of might in the several regions midway through the Sarawak campaign.
Claws were bared in Kuching, in what was dubbed by the DAP as 'Super Sunday', as about 10,000 thronged their two rallies in the capital city.

The largest crowd was seen in Batu Kawah, where an estimated 8,000 people were on their feet for hours as they hung on every word uttered by Pakatan's superstar trio - DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat.

NONEA mere mention of "sex video" by Anwar drew laughter from the crowd, which was still growing midway through the ceramah, causing traffic congestion for about five kilometres on Jalan Batu Kawah.

"I received a warning - now that the Customs officer has died, my DNA would be found there too," he told the audience, some of which had brought their own plastic chairs to the Batu Kawah bridge some 200 metres away to listen to the opposition speakers.

On a more serious note, the PKR leader brought up the contentious issue of the 31,500 Malay-language Bible, Al Kitab, which were impounded in Port Klang and Kuching, and later released but with a Home Ministry 'For Christianity' stamp.

NONEWhile the issue, as well as the suit involving the use of the word 'Allah' by Catholic weekly the Herald was expected to be stirred up during the campaign in Sarawak where a significant number are Christian, the opposition has been largely quiet on the matter.

"Prophet Muhammad's father's name was Abdullah (meaning servant of Allah) and he was born 70 years before Muhammad's prophethood and the existence of Islam, so this is not an issue," he said.

Jokes,songs and a scramble for 1Malaysia goodies

The large crowd in Batu Kawah delivered a boost for first-time candidate Christina Chiew, who is said to be facing a tough battle against BN's Tan Jun Phoi.

NONEBatu Kawah is less than an hour's drive from other DAP and PKR contested constituencies of Batu Lintang,Padungan and Pending, so it is uncertain if the crowd was mostly Batu Kawah constituents.

While Nik Aziz's brief speech was met with hushed reverence by the crowd, it was Lim who was the star of the night, enthralling the crowd with witty comments against the Sarawak government.

The Penang chief minister was also mobbed by the crowd the moment he stood off the tiny stage by supporters who wanted him to sign their Ubah soft toys - the popular DAP mascot for its Sarawak campaign.

Another event which did not feature superstar speakers in Tian Thou temple of Bintawa, Kuching, drew a commendable number of 2,000.

NONEOn the other side of Kuching, Andrew Ong reports that an almost riotous scene broke out at an event graced by Prime Minister Najib Razak, who touched down earlier tonight for his six-day Sarawak sojourn.

Many of the 2,000 people, including the elderly and children, who attended the 1Malaysia event in a stadium in South Kuching were scrambling on top of each other to grab the goodie bags, packed with Tupperware brand tumblers adorned with 1Malaysia stickers (photo below).

Choice words for Taib

Meanwhile in Sibu, Regina Lee reports that 300 people attended the SUPP's ceramah in the town centre, a rather high figure compared to the norm for the embattled BN component party.

NONETaking to the stage, Dudong candidate Tiong Thai King (right) hit out at DAP's incessant attacks on ! Abdul Ta ib, challenging them to face the CM in his own constituency of Balingian if they are 'capable'. "If they want to overthrow the man, they should just go there and campaign," he said.

The PKR ceramah was at the Nangka constituency, where party candidate Norisham Mohamed Ali got a helping hand from national leaders such as PKR Johor chief Chua Jui Meng, secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution and Indera Mahkota MP Azan Ismail.

However, they could only attract a crowd of about 100 in a Chinese-populated spot on Jalan Delta, speaking outside a coffeeshop to diners.

NONEAll the same, Norisham did well even as a political novice, getting the slightly intoxicated beer-drinking crowd roaring with approval as he brands Taib "buaya putih" (white crocodile).

"(BN manifesto says that it) wants to make Sarawak the richest state by 2030. It's bulls**t! Bulls**t! (Taib) wants to make it rich for who? He wants to make it rich for himself. "I also don't want to call him 'rambut putih' (white haired - or pek moh, the opposition's nickname for Taib) anymore. He should be called buaya putih," he said.

Meanwhile, about 2km away, the crowd at the DAP ceramah swelled to 5,000, even without any party heavyweights. Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming, however, gave the crowd a treat with his fiery and entertaining oratory.

"Wah, this (complainant in Anwar's sodomy trial Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan) said in court that Anwar was polite before he played with his backside. He said he was very polite, saying that Anwar asked 'can I f**k you today'?" triggering laughter all around.

Then touching on the sex video allegations, Nga decried that the people were! being m ade fools again.

"(Anwar) is a promising star when he is in Umno, but after he is fired from the party, (they say) he has (committed sodomy) with an old man (Anwar's former speechwriter Dr Munawar Ahmad Anees), and ... (then) with a young man. And now he is having sex with a prostitute. Can you imagine that?

"You think we are 'bo ta chek' (uneducated)?" he said.

Wong Teck Chi
reports that Miri which saw crowds of thousands several nights ago was however quiet without any ceramah last night, while Guan Eng was the star again in Bintulu, without even having to show his face.

A video chronicling his journey in politics from his detention over allegations of statutory rape by then Malacca chief minister Rahim Thamby Chik to being Penang chief minsiter, was screened to about 500 people.

In Limbang, DAP collected a whopping RM26,759 from a 48-table dinner. Ipoh Timur MP Lim Kit Siang claimed that this was a record for the party in this northern town. Pasir Pinji assemblyperson Thomas Su said the dinner was attended by 500 people, while at least 100 more stood outside the hall to listen to the broadcast of speeches.

DAP is contesting Bukit Kota while PKR is contesting neighbouring Batu Danau, both of which are under the Limbang parliamentary seat. Sarawak will go to the polls on April 16.
