‘Biased’ emphasis on Malays, Islam in history syllabus, says historian

Historian Dr Ranjit Malhi Singh also believed that “scant attention” has been given to the efforts of the Chinese and Indians in the development of the nation.
The author of history textbooks up until 1996 also charged that there were too many “half-truths and factual errors” in the current syllabus, and that it was laden with “value judgments.”
“There should be no value judgment in our textbooks. It is the greatest sin in any history book.
“There is a lopsided emphasis on Islamic civilisation... five out of 10 chapters of the current Form Four history textbook deal with Islamic history whereby earlier the Form 4 history textbook only had one chapter on Islamic history,” Ranjit said at a discussion organised by Catholic Teachers’ Association at the Assumption Catholic church here.
According to Ranjit, “half-truths” and inaccuracies were evident in the existing syllabus. As an example, he said the history books have omitted the fact that Parameswara (founder of Malacca) was a Hindu prince from Palembang who died a Hindu.
He also said the current syllabus gave the wrong impression that the other races did not fight courageously in defending Malaya during the Japanese Occupation, and that only the Malay Regiment did so.
“Thousands of Punjabi, Gurkha, British and Australian soldiers died defending Malaya during the Japanese onslaught.
“Thirty-three of the 232 names on the Tugu Negara are Sikhs,” said Ranjit.
The historian pointed out that the current Form Four history textbooks had reduced by more than 25 per cent of the text related to Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism compared to the previous syllabus (from 1,112 words to about 832 words.)
Ranjit lamented the fact that non-Malay leaders were not duly recognised in the history books.
“The current Form 2 history textbook has downplayed the role of Yap Ah Loy in developing Kuala Lumpur, it has just one sentence on him.
“Yap Ah Loy was why Kuala Lumpur became what it is today, he established the township... he initiated the KL-Damansara road, and was the first person to build brick shophouses in 1884,” said Ranjit.
The majority of the 100-odd people who turned up for the discussion today agreed with Ranjit’s findings.
Many of them, mostly non-Malays, expressed fears of an unbalanced teaching of history in the classroom, with specific emphasis only on Islam and Malays.
Some present today were heard whispering “pseudo-Islamisation” to each other during the discussion.
One parent, who did not want to be named, has begun a petition to demand a revamp of the syllabus.
“What kind of balanced proportion is this none? One civilisation that is glorified at the expense of others.
“History classes become more like ‘agama’ classes, children have no opportunity to learn about comparative religions,” she said.
Ranjit said he had already contacted the director-general of education and planned to notify him of the suggested revamps to the history module.
He said that the Form 1-5 history textbooks should be reviewed to ensure factual accuracy and consistency and a balanced account of the country’s history.
He also said the advisory panel and writers should be drawn from various ethnic groups, and that the textbooks should be devoid of value judgments.
“All history textbooks should be revised to ensure factual accuracy, consistency... right now they are not.
“What’s more, all 17 authors of the books belong to one ethnic group. How can this be? You must have a balanced ethnic composition,” said Ranjit.
He also called on the government to change the methods of teaching history to be geared towards active participation and live debates rather than memorising and regurgitating facts.

It was the (Brunei) Malays that handed Sarawak (approximately Kuching Division then) to James Brooke and made him Rajah. That started the 100 year dynasty of the "White Rajah".
The Dayaks (and the Chinese - Chinese Rebellion) are the only BUMIPUTERAS that ever resisted the Brooks at the Battle of Beting Maru, 3 Sadok Expeditions, Saribas Expedition, etc.The Dayaks are the only "Malaysians" ever to have fought a sea battle against the Royal Navy (represented by HMS Dido) at the Battle of Beting Maru.

Just tell your children to memorise whatever that will come out in the exams - just swallow - then at the end of the exam - just puke everything out. 'Study' for the sake of passing and purge everything. After all what they need is just the ticket to get to higher education. When they come out to work, such biased history will be only a figment of an imagination anyway. So advice your kids to just do a GIGO till they get out of school. For now, that's the only way to 'adapt' to the current Malaysia.

Malaysian history should not start at malacca Sultanate, but dated way back to Langkasuka, Ligor, Srivijaya and Gangganegara long before Islam come to this land. Enrich Nusantara and non-malays involvement in Malay Archipelago politics, economic and social history.

Dt Ranjit Malhi's books were well-thought out, well-structured, products of a writer who understands history. He knows what he is saying. Present-day history syllabus is stilted, myopic, and restricted to the little that these new-fanglef textbook writers know. This is to help them 'cari makan' because they can't write about anything else outside their coconut shell.

History was supposed to teach the people about the facts and the flow of the development of a country, not trying to infuse them with religion teaching and influencing.. what's more, pin pointing their contribution whilst belittling the others are trades of cowards who are afraid to admit that what we have today is what EVERYONE fought so hard for in the beginning of Malaysia's time.
No offense, but glorying the name of 'Malay' in the context of islam teaching and bloodshed 50 years ago is not a something proud, but rather to be ashamed of as it shows how closed and irrelevant their mindset is in building up this country..

I believe it was Hitler's propaganda minister ( Goebbels ) who said, " If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. ". The UMNO government have been re-writing History to suit their pro-malay agenda. UMNO's blatant lies is used to promote Malay chauvinism. The reason for downplaying the other races contribution to nation building is because the it is apparent Indians and Chinese have contributed more to the modernization of Malaysia. How do you run a country if there are no taxes, labors and businesses!

first, skew historical facts. next, make history a compulsory subject. next, introduce a factually wrong, racially biased literature text as compulsory read. this is a surefire formula for social reengineering.
Dr. Ranjit, i salute you. a little late, in my humble opinion but it is a beginning. to other so called emminent datuk historians, what are you afraid of? call a spade a spade. this man cannot fight alone or soon he will feel dejected and give up. man needs fellow historians support. do give him your support.

These chauvinists even tried to blame the Chinese and Indians for the fall of Malacca Sultanate to the Portuguese. They have now twisted the history text by saying the Chinese supplied tongkangs and Indians worked as spies for the Portuguese whereas the Javanese fought as mercenaries for Sultan Mahmud 500 years ago. This amounts inciting hatred and promoting bigotry in your schools.

Morons, that's the truth and the correct connotations about the other races in this country who cry foul that the Malays have played their back after all these years. What the hell were you all doing so long? Never once the non Malay citizens stood up to show discord on the atrocities that were silently going on. Don't blame the UMNO government after all these years. When, erosion of Non Malay intake in Public sectors, University placements, Business licenses, Business loans and Grants, and all other services like Police force and the Military were happening right in front of the eyes of the Non Malay citizens, no one ever stood up to correct the situation just because of self interest superseding the welfare of the alike. Thus, the end result of all these lopsided and heinous practices by the Mahathir regime were corruption, cronyism, nepotism, arrogance, master and slave attitude (Ketuanan Melayu), and racism to a major extend. These blind spots will take decades for rectification! So, hello don’t say only history is distorted but remember everything is distorted, to the extend that Malaysia is now ranked as failed state.

Take a tour in any city/town in Malaysia and you will find that towns/cities are built by the Chinese/Indians/British. It remains until today. Look at Penang, it is very evident the Chinese/British/Indians developed it. Look at Kampung Baru in KL, its nowhere although it is smack in the city. Look at Malay Kampungs, such kampungs remain as kamoungs. Go to any Chinese New Villages where Chinese were resettled to protect the British from the onslaught of Malayan People Anti Japanese Army.......there are factories/thriving restaurants businesses, big houses and full of hustle bustle even late nights. Malay kampungs are dead after the 5th prayers. Look at the roads, the railways, the rubber trees etc.....who built them? Without the Indians and Chinese, the British cannot have done it by themselves. The towns/cities/structures are evidences of the false history taught today and compare it to Putrajaya/Cyberjaya, the townships built by the Malays........

In the long run, there is an outside world where the truths and facts reside, the UMNO/BN govt can spin all the lies and distortions that they want now but it will not change history.
When Malaysians go out to the outside world, the real facts will stand.
It is the Malay people who is being deceived here. UMNO has now twisted history so much the Malays are thoroughly confused!
All because the UMNO leaders wish to continue their exploitation of the people by dividing the people!
A life based on lies leads only to disappointments!
My sympathies to the Malays for the deception these so-called "protectors of the Malays" have spun.

Sigh.... This is their typical pattern in order to outshine others you see.... Else they've nothing much to contribute in the history books. So they've to make up stories but in order for those fictitious stories to be belieable, they've to reduce the stories of the others in order to look & sound significant. Sigh..... This pattern of theirs (not ours), that is lying seemed to be only way for the Malays to gain superiority over others, and that is indeed sad.

1 Malaysia - my foot!! Malaysian history must revolve around the Malaysian Master race. Just take a page out of the history book of Nazi Germany - and you will inevitably come to realize that the history of that particular era likewise glorified the achievements and deeds of the German "Master race". In world history we have only two claimants to a "Master Race" status - the Germans and the Malays. We know the Germans as a an industrious, creative and intelligent race. But the Malays?? Can we make some 'value judgement' here?

This is a systematic plot to wipe out traces of other races from Malaysian history. First, they in crease the number of Indonesian to Malaysia and diluting the percentage of other races. With this, they have the reasons to discriminate other races in all fields. To make their discrimations legitimate, they start to deny the contributions from other races through brain washing programmes like BTN and lop sided education system. Parameswara, Hang Tuah, Yap Ah loy are the victims of those brain washing programmes.

Let them have their version of story and let us tell our children who are the real warriors and who developed Malaysia. Everybody know which race is the most hardworking and which race is depending on Gov to feed them monthly....

bravo ranjit! you have guts and you are great for speaking out the truth. you tower way above professor dr. khoo.
malaysians want to study a more balanced and truthful history. you would do the nation and rakyat a great service if you could do more in such aspects, and perhaps recruit more truthful historians to set the perspective right.
keep the history and religious perverts and freaks out, preferably in the cesspool, so that they have no opportunity to skew up malaysian history.

The same goes to history books in Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam, and not to forget our prosperous neighbour, Singapore. Their history never recognised the Malay Kingdoms. So all them are right only the Malays are wrong.

What has BN historian Khoo KK got to say about this?
MCA, Gerakan and MIC, do you know that your ancestors' contributions have been ignored? Are you all so indulging in the wealth and power which Umno gave you that you have forgotten your roots?

Dr Ranjit I loved your chart-books on history when I was doing SPM.
Seems like the History Book committee is an extension of BTN... all from one race. That's the dirty hand of UMNO in action.

I agree with Ranjit's views. The textbook is too bias towards Islamic glory. There's not much coverage given for other empires. The students should know how corrupted these Islamic empires is that lead to their downfall. Look at how they oppress the womens in Saudi Arabia. If your husband dies, you're practically non-existent in that country because of the Islamic law. Islam is fair? I doubt it.
Taking food that the ants gather all year long to give to the grasshopper which shows no effort in gathering food isn't fair.

Don't fret too much. When "islam" comes into the body politics of a nation, it self destructs. No need to give examples. its QED.

To be honest, when I was in secondary school and studying all these 'sejarah', even the young me then find the 'facts' to be questionable. So easy to see the bias la, even for a kid.
And oh. Obviously they also try hard to waterdown the agreement during Malaysia formation back then. I've always wondered since young why Sarawak, the largest state which seems so different from the states in the Peninsular was given little acknowledgement in the textbook. I have always felt something was terribly wrong with the formation of Malaysia, just that I didn't know where to get explanations for my instinct.
My young instinct years ago has now proven right.

I can see the invisible hand of BTN type of indoctrination working to change history.
The MCA appointed Deputy Education Minister as well as the non umno ministers in the cabinet are betraying the non bumi communities by allowing this to happen and allowing the UMNO Education Minister to ride rough shot over the non bumi.
We need to throw BN out of office.

I remember visiting the national monument as a schoolboy , and beaming with pride that about one third of the names on one of the cenotaphs were Sikhs. We have shed more blood for this country per head than any other community. Yet we do not want special privileges. Our religion teaches us the virtues of hard work, and to always fight for truth and justice.all we want are equal rights as equal citizens, despite our unequal contribution! What we will not tolerate is the re-writing of Malaysian history !

Only the learned Malays can challenge the injustices of the Umno Malays . Learned Malays who did not help to fight the enemy of our nations will also find their children suffering under a dictatorial or oppressive regime.

history is not an arts, it is a science that has to be based on concrete evidence. It has to reflect the facts as they are. It has to be honest and truthful. It is universal and history wouldnt change at ones whims and fancies. If we want to be a global player, if we want to groom a high achieving nation then we need to teach our students with the highest standards in all fields including history. If want a nation of jaguh kampungs then we can continue with manipulating with historical facts to suit our myopic malay agenda which will not bring this nation any where. We need not go far to prove this. Just look at singapore and see what is the status of their university and the status of our university in the world ranking. The choice is ours. If want to remain in Kampung then it is upto us, If we want developed status by 2020 then we got to discard these idiotic agendas which really ruins the efforts in nurturing the intelligentsia of our country
