Will Tunisia Be the First Domino?

In Egypt, too, protestors are laying waste to the mistaken notion that Arabs and Muslims are politically passive.

By Anwar Ibrahim*

Tunisians earlier this month forced their president out of office, marking the first popular revolution in an Arab country in modern history. The swiftness with which it came about should send a clear message to other autocracies and dictatorships in the Muslim world.

The longevity of such regimes comes from their ability to suppress dissent with state-controlled organs, particularly the military. What Tunisia’s example demonstrates is that when one of these organs malfunctions—as the security forces did when they failed to mobilize effectively—others, like the media and the judiciary, can fall rapidly as well.

Could this be a Berlin Wall moment for the Middle East? Will other Arab states that employ the same modus operandi of political oppression also fall?

In a 2005 address at the U.S.- Islamic World Forum in Doha, I argued that democratization would come to the Middle East sooner than most projected, and I criticized what I consider to be the U.S.’s “policy of selective ambivalence.” While the Bush administration extolled the virtue of freedom in waging its war on terror, the U.S. remained closely allied with various countries that use blatantly repressive policies to stamp out civil society and subvert democracy.

This ambivalence has not dissipated under the Obama administration. Despite Mr. Obama’s historic speech in Cairo, where he specifically extolled representative government, this White House continues to work closely with a range of Middle Eastern autocrats. From the perspective of democrats in the region, this is because democratization will likely yield governments that tend to be less responsive to U.S. demands—particularly those governments regarded as Islamist.

Consider Tunisia. Zine El Abidine Ben Ali would not have remained in power for 25 years had it not been for American support. The fact that this kleptocratic regime finally fell is a stark reminder that government built on the suppression of its citizens is temporary. We saw this in Iran in 1979 with the dramatic downfall of the Shah, and also in 1998 when Indonesians peacefully transitioned to democracy after three decades of military rule.

The problems that plague the Arab world remain overwhelming: the concentration of wealth and power by the few over the many, poor infrastructure, primitive education systems, minimal health care, and decreasing incomes in the face of rising food prices and cost of living. Corruption and nepotism reign in the complete absence of accountability and transparency.

It is a perfect recipe for political upheaval: political marginalization and economic impoverishment for the people and ill-gotten wealth for the ruling elite. It’s a reality that can’t be cloaked by propaganda—citizens can see the reality on YouTube and Facebook—though the leaders certainly try. Indeed, no Arab leader has owned up to any of these evils, other than by offering pious platitudes about improving the economic lot of their people.

It would be foolhardy for governments in the region to regard Tunisia as an isolated case. The economic and political grievances that spawned the revolution are not unique to that country. One need only walk the streets of Cairo and Karachi, or roam the back lands in Algeria and Afghanistan, to see how grinding poverty and oppression can crush a person’s dignity.

Autocratic rulers accustomed to permanent sovereignty might consider changing their mindset. The Tunisian uprising was driven by a desire for freedom and justice, not by any particular ideology. The bogeyman of Islamism, the oft-cited scapegoat of Middle Eastern dictators to justify their tyranny, must therefore be reconsidered or junked altogether. The U.S., too, should learn a lesson about the myth that secular tyrants and dictators are its best bet against Islamists. Revolutions, be they secular or religious, are born of a universal desire for autonomy. The common thread that binds the Iranian revolution and the Tunisian upheaval is the rising discontent of the people after years of suffering under oppressive rule.

Could Tunisia’s revolution turn this winter of Arab discontent into a spring for Middle Eastern freedom? As Tunisia moves into the league of Middle Eastern democracies along with countries such as Turkey, for much of the rest of the Muslim world democracy remains elusive. Opposition groups in countries like Egypt have found a beacon of hope in Tunisians’ struggle. Demonstrations in Cairo and throughout the region lay waste to the mistaken notion that Arab and Muslims are politically passive and prone to authoritarianism. But will they be given a fair chance? The Palestinians chose their own leaders through the ballot box, but the West changed the rules of engagement midway through the game.

The fundamental lesson is clear: The U.S. must stop supporting tyrants and autocrats whether in the Middle East, Pakistan or Southeast Asia. Let this be a new dawn for democracy in the Arab and Muslim world.

PAS no play with Hudud ...

Hudud not first priority for PAS, says sec-gen

January 26, 2011

Mustafa said that Barisan Nasional was trying to play up racial sentiments to create animosity between the voters and PR.
LABIS, Jan 26 — PAS has pledged that it will not implement hudud if Pakatan Rakyat (PR) takes over the federal government although it will not budge from pushing for Islamic policies.

Its secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali said this today in Tenang, Johor where MCA has made the Islamic state pursued by PAS a major issue for the January 30 polls.

“Even if PAS had absolute power with two-thirds majority in Parliament, the first thing that PAS will do is not hudud,” he said in a press conference this morning.

Mustafa said that it could not implement hudud immediately upon taking over the federal government as there were preconditions such as economic justice, minimum wage and punishing rulers if poor people had to steal before the laws could be introduced.

He added that hudud was not in the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) Common Policy Framework.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek has attacked PAS’s Islamic state policy in the Tenang campaign, where he was reported to have said that voting for Normala was voting for an Islamic state.

The former health minister had said that even though DAP was an ally in PR, it could not stop PAS from continuing its Islamic state policies.

“If PR wins at the federal level, I feel that it is not possible. PAS will be the leader as the party with more resources as compared to DAP and PKR,” Dr Chua said.

Mustafa said that Barisan Nasional (BN) was trying to play up racial sentiments to create animosity between the voters and PR.

“When they go to a Chinese area, they say DAP is following PAS. When they go to a Malay area, they will say that PAS is being used by DAP instead.

“This is racial politics. When Soi Lek says DAP will do whatever PAS wants, that is hudud, I will just be clear and say that Islam is PAS’s policy and we have never moved from that stand.

“Islam is our policy and must be accepted by all, whether PAS or Umno but if Umno only wants to use it halfway, then that’s up to them,” he said.

The issue of implementing hudud, or Islamic criminal law, and establishing an Islamic state has often caused tension between the Islamic party and its PR partners, especially DAP.

Hudud imposes strict punishment including amputation for stealing and stoning for fornication and has been used, especially by MCA, in the Tenang by-election to campaign against PAS candidate Normala Sudirman.

Last night, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng also accused MCA of raising the Islamic state issue to block non-Muslims from recognising that Islam is the official religion of the country.

The Penang chief minister said that Dr Chua raised the issue to attack PAS and instil fear in non-Malays before the Tenang polls this Sunday.

Rosmah Mansor Moves Into Her Own "PM" Office in Putrajaya

"FLOM"= First Lady of Malaysia

Putrajaya:

A new unit in the Prime Ministers Department has set tongues wagging.

The unit known as FLOM, an acronym for First Lady of Malaysia, is a full-fledged department that looks into the operational needs of the Prime Ministers wife, Rosmah Mansor.

Ensconed within the premises of the PMs Office, FLOM has a six-member staff headed by special officer Siti Azizah Sheikh Abod.

The rest of the unit comprises two personal assistants Saleha Mohd Rabani and Siti Zaiton Abdul Ghani and three assistant officers with special functions G Vimala, Rizal Mansor and Nurul Rosemiemmy Kahsimi.

What these personnel actually do is anyones guess and FLOMs mission and vision remain a mystery. The Prime Ministers Office (PMO) official website too is not helpful.

Suffice to say that FLOM was probably involved in the highly publicised and controversial Islamic Fashion Week, the recent RM4.5 million three-day First Ladies Summit and, not to mention, the additional official activities and visits to New York, Europe and the Middle East.

Curious bloggers hot on the Rosmah trail have been spewing venom at her audacity to establish her own unit within the Prime Ministers Department.

(FLOM shares the SAME stature in the PMO as that of five other units, namely private secretary, political secretary,! Office of the Prime Ministers adviser, Office of the Prime Ministers economic adviser and Management Office of Sri Perdana.)

Already shes taking away hundreds of millions of ringgit from the taxpayers money to channel into her Permata (early childhood education) and other project. When the PM was sick, she ignored Muhyiddin (Yassin) and stood in for PM Now she has moved into the Prime Ministers Office what will she do next, ranted one blogger.

Another blog posting demanded to know the operational cost of running a six-member department and who was paying for it.

What is she trying to do run the country? The role of the wife of a PM is to complement him in relation to the social aspects. Rosmah should play the role of mother to the people of Malaysia, instead of wasting taxpayers money to establish a division, noted the posting.

Yet another posting noted: Rosmah fancies herself as Michelle Obama (US President Barrack Obamas wife) with access to the Oval office.

Fascinated by the online brouhaha over Rosmahs latest stunt, FMT made a short call to the PMO only to be told that the entire FLOM team was not back from Oman but declined to give furher details.

Meanwhile, a report in The Star last week noted that Rosmahs OFFICIAL visit to Oman will further strengthen relations between Malaysia and the sultanate.

Opposition parties here have not been without their views. PKR has reportedly demanded that Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak explain FLOMs legality.

Said PKR womens chief Zuraida Kamaruddin: Najib should explain this division, and the establishment of this unit without going through the legal convention such as Parliament. Rosmah should not have an office in PMO.

Revolusi Tunisia Dorong UMNO Pinda Akta Cetak Untuk Kengkang Internet

Revolusi Tunisia berlaku tanpa penganjur.

KITA Who? Us lah!

  • Last night I had the pleasure of being invited for some noodles, Nasi Lemak and Roti Jala at Dato Zaid Ibrahims (DZ) house. It was a lovely evening where about 20 odd people came and shared their views after DZ gave his briefing about KITA

  • As publicized in the media, KITA was formed as a result of a back door take-over of an existing party via a friendly process. The new party has a fresh logo, objectives, and organization structure and membership criteria. The constitutional amendment is pending ROS approval. The details of the pre-approved constitution can be read here.

  • From the briefing, I was impressed upon that one of the conditions for any office bearers to contest in the GE is that they have to relinquish party post. In fact the commitment that was displayed is that party office bearers has no real interest in contesting in GE but prefer to develop the party. This is good as it would mean that either DZ will not contest or he will have to relinquish his present post as the president of the party.

  • Some friends told me that it would not be a good idea to be associated with DZ at the current moment if one wants to test the political arenas. I beg to differ if we were to look at things objectively. Like DZ, I am also not a saint. In fact most of us have some skeletons hidden in the cupboard somewhere. DZ may not be politically popular but last night in passing I told DZ in the presence of the crowd that KITA is not about DZ. KITA is about kita or Us

  • When we say us, we must refer to issues that are relevant to us. In my case it varies from the safety of neighborhood, traffic jams, abandon houses, development policies and other nation! al level issues. The party should not focus on issues that are not relevant to the people. Issues like APCO are only good for politics and people who are emotional.

  • Ask any man in the street whether it is relevant to them in their daily life and you will get a resounding firm negative answer. I guess the biggest issue surrounding any family is managing cost of living and having access to a community support services like schools, clinics, shops etc within a reasonable distance and time frame.

  • The appropriate question now would be that why wouldnt anyone want to be associated with KITA? It is not DZ party. He and like other office bearers in any association are a temporary custodian. The objective and the party will outlive the personalities. For that reason I see no reason for people who criticize BN and PR to support KITA. They are looking for people to stand for office in the GE13 as well as people who prefer to play a supporting role in promoting the party and support the candidates. If you are keen, give KITA a buzz. In BA, I am thinking whether I should assist in giving AA a run for his money. Lets be involve forkita (us)

EC Chairman Aziz should be put out to pasture

EC Chairman Aziz said that anyone who wishes to object to a person eligibility to vote should pay RM10 to the State Director within a week after the electoral roll is up. How many people are willing to pay that RM10 when our money is so small especially now that food prices have soar rocket high?

People like Aziz spent RM2500 an hour for a few second of orgasm with models and singers do not understand the meaning of RM10.

That is why this country is ruin when the very people who are out to serve us are filthy rich beyond nine (9) generation. They do not serve nor work with their heart. They only work for money and position and some for titles.

Many countries are working towards a uniform computer database structure so that different database can talk to each other and bring a more transparent list to the people but our EC boys are still playing snake and ladder and once in a while entertain us by juggling with their balls.

Maybe the boys can look into Botong Pinoy by Rafael Garcia III who had claimed the most modern computer voting systems in the world.

Botong Pinoy may be one of the most modern computer voting systems in the world.

Rafael Garcia III, the man who gave Filipinos instant driver's licenses and NBI clearances, presented his ideas on what he calls "Botong Pinoy."

"Picture this scenario: You go to your registered precinct and you find a computer that checks if you are registered to vote in that precinct not through the use of an ID card but by recognizing your face (after it had checked your face at the time of registration against all the faces of all registered voters at the speed of 1 million faces per second to make sure you have not registered more than once)?

! "After i t recognized you by face, it then checks your scanned fingerprint against the fingerprint that you have on file in the Comelec Database to make sure it really is you before you are allowed to vote?

"After it is sure that you are who you claim you are by making use of the latest facial and fingerprint biometric technology, the system then guides you through the entire voting process by talking to you in Filipino, English or the dialect prevalent in the region where the precinct is located? A computer that actually talks to you!

"How would you like a voting system that allows you to vote for the candidates or parties of your choice simply by pointing at their names, faces or parties on the computer screen as the faces and names of candidates for each position are displayed on the screen?

"How would you like a voting system that automatically tabulates all votes cast in each precinct, then transmits the tabulated votes for the precinct at the end of the voting day to a secure Internet Website where its electronic signature is verified before it is allowed to post its tabulated votes, and where all the votes from all precincts are automatically tabulated on a Barangay, City or Municipal, Provincial or Regional and National levels, totally eliminating the pernicious practice of Dagdag-Bawas that has eroded the trust of the people in the electoral process?

"How would you like a voting system that uses the latest state of the art computer systems, every election year, and even helps in promoting the use of IT technology in the Philippines and yet costs the Comelec only one-fourth to one- fifth of the cost of acquiring the latest computer system?

"Sounds too good to be true? Welcome to Botong Pinoy!

"Botong Pinoy may be one of the most modern computer voting systems in the world, making full use of most of the proven technologies available today but leaving a lot of room for future improvements as technology continues on its logarithmic climb to faster, better, smaller a! nd cheap er computer systems.

"The system that we are proposing is a two-level system: a precinct level voting and tabulation system developed by Mega Data, the implementer of the fast and convenient kiosks used by the NBI and the LTO to renew NBI Clearances and Driver Licenses, coupled with an Internet-based Nationwide Precinct Total Tabulation system developed and implemented by Polistrat and already proven to work in the last elections.

"There are several basic premises that are the foundation of the entire concept:

"1. We believe that the Comelec must never buy hardware, considering that technological innovations every six months will render any computer equipment acquired for any elections obsolete almost immediately after they are acquired. Instead, all hardware should be leased! This way, if the equipment can be leased for three months for one fifth of the cost of acquisition, the Comelec's computerization budget can be spread out over five elections (or fifteen years).

"2. The Comelec should only own its database and its software! These can be upgraded and updated from election to election (every three years) depending on what new operating platforms are available for the current elections.

"3. In order to afford the latest high-tech identification systems that make use of facial and/or fingerprint biometrics, the Comelec again should only rent the operating biometric platforms for the duration of the election build-up and actual voting. This way, it doesn't cost the Comelec the millions of dollars that hardware-based biometric systems like the fingerprint system used by SSS would cost.

"We propose to install a computer system in every voting precinct throughout the country. That's approximately 200,000 computers for 200,000 precincts. Where there is no power available, we will provide battery-powered inverters to power the computers.

"The most current version of the Precinct Voting and Tabulation system will be loaded into each of these computer systems as! well as the most current Precinct Database for the 200 to 300 voters registered for each particular precinct.

"As the voter approaches the voting machine, the video camera immediately captures his/her facial biometrics and compares this with its database. The system will then ask the voter to put his registered finger on the fingerprint scanner to extract his/her fingerprint biometrics, which is then compared with the stored fingerprints of those in the candidate list extracted from the Precinct database. The system will authorize the voter to vote only if there is a match. Otherwise, the system will alert the precinct supervisor.

"The voter will be presented with the pictures, names and parties of all the candidates for each position (from local to regional to national). The voter will also be allowed to vote by party to enter a vote for the entire party slate. What is convenient is that the voter votes simply by touching the screen over the face or name of the candidate or party!

"The voter indicates that he/she is finished voting by pressing the appropriate section on the computer screen. At that point, the system will print a computer-generated ballot of the candidates that the voter voted for. The ballot will also have his/her computer printed fingerprint. The ballot itself is dropped into the precinct ballot box for manual tabulation after the electoral process has been completed to act as an audit trail and a check and balance to the computerized tabulation system.

"As each voter enters his/her vote, the Precinct Level computer system will tabulate the votes for the entire precinct such that at the end of the day, the Precinct supervisor can generate a precinct level Tally Sheet at the same time transmitting the same to a specific website in the Internet to provide Barangay, City, Municipal, Provincial, Regional, and National tabulation automatically!

"This system will allow the early releases of computerized election results in a matter of minutes after the Precinct Le! vel Tall ies have all been posted."

This is something that can be done and it is home-grown, designed and created by Pinoys. Let's all go for Botong Pinoy!

Court orders halt to logging by Taib-linked firms

Keruah Usit

An interim injunction has been granted to 15 Iban longhouse communities in upper Sebangan in Simunjan, Sarawak, ordering Quality Concrete Holdings Bhd and its contractor Loyal Billion Sdn Bhd to halt logging, land clearing and other related activities there.

Timber concession licence holder Quality Concrete is substantially owned by Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmuds sister, Roziah. Another two of Taibs family members also have shares in the company.

bn supreme council mt meeting sapp sabah issue 190608 taib mahmudTaibs first cousin, Hamed Sepawi, is listed 28th among the 30 largest shareholders of Quality Concrete as at May 6, 2010, according the companys annual report for that year. Another Taib relative is his brother-in-law Abdul Aziz Husain, a former state secretary, who is listed at 24th.

The longhouse communities are claiming native customary rights to the land. The 15 villages are proprietors, occupiers, holders and claimants of NCR lands surrounding Kampung Entanggor, Ensika, Lumut, Arus Dayak, Tongkah Dayak, Tongkah Dayak Lubuk Manta, Tongkah Dayak Atas, Tongkah Dayak Rumah Panjai, Lunying, Belimbing Besi, Ketimbong and Bajong Ili, Bajong Ili Atas, Bajong Ili Tengah, Bajong Ili Baruh, located about three hours drive from Kuching.

District office, forest department refuse to act

In November 2009, the Sarawak Forest Department issued Quality Concrete with a Licence to Take Jungle Produce, but the company has been extracting timber from an area measuring 5,525 hectares, which the native Iban communities claim to be thei! r NCR la nd.

The company and its contractor Loyal Billion faced strong resistance from the local native communities when logging operations began in June 2010. The longhouse residents lodged police reports and sent numerous letters to the relevant authorities asking for the logging to be stopped.

NONEFrustrated by the refusal to act on the part of the local district office and the forest department, the natives last October set up barricades along the logging tracks.

The stand-off came to public attention when Loyal Billion directors told a press conference in Sibu that their logging camp, located 4km from the native blockade site, was torched on Oct 18.

Police then stepped in and arrested activists Nicholas Mujah and Numpang anak Suntai, as well as five longhouse chiefs. They were detained for three days and then released on police bail.

In November 2010, Numpan and 290 other representatives of the Iban communities filed a suit against Quality Concrete, Loyal Billion, the Sarawak Forest Department director and three others for trespassing and encroaching into their native customary land and seeking a declaration on their customary rights to the land.

Barely two weeks after filing the civil suit, Numpang was brought before a magistrates court in Serian and charged with criminal intimidation.

In the affidavit filed in support of his application for an interim injunction, Numpang included photographs of the timber logging activities being carried out, despite the expiry of Quality Concretes logging licence.

The photographs were said to have been taken in the presence of police officers from the Simunjan station.

After hearing submissions from See Chee How of Baru Bian Advocates and Solicitors yesterday morning, judicial commissioner Rhodzariah Bujang granted the interim injunction and fixed theinter-parte application to be heard on Fe! b 9.

Rosmah’s own ‘oval office’

Controversial wife of Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak may have gone one step too far with her latest shift, quite literally, into the Prime Minister's Office.

PUTRAJAYA: A new unit in the Prime Minister’s Department has set tongues wagging.

The unit known as FLOM, an acronym for First Lady of Malaysia, is a full-fledged department that looks into the operational needs of the Prime Minister’s wife, Rosmah Mansor.

Ganyang or Selamatkan M'sia, where BN crushes and Pakatan saves

It is worrying when people refuse to learn from history and keep repeating mistakes. In this instance, it is the Umno-controlled newspaper Utusan Malaysia that has been seen as riding high even to the point of arrogance, and all for the wrong reasons.

The newspaper recently tried to get rid of its writer Hata Wahari using intimidating tactics because he - in his capacity as head of the journalists' union - had questioned Utusan's racial stand in many of its writings. But what did such action earn Utusan? Loads of public wrath and certainly a drop in readership.

Unfortunately, in the eyes of the 'almighty' Utusan top management, the battle is far from over. For now, Hata's issue has been put on the backburner for there is a bigger and supposedly more important agenda.

The newspaper must focus on helping its political masters grab the Tenang state seat come the polling day on Sunday. To do that, the newspaper has decided to 'widen' its horizons, this time by making use of the IndonesianKonfrontasi slogan 'Ganyang Malaysia" (crush Malaysia),

On Wednesay, the newspaper decided to make comparisons between "Ganyang Malaysia" and the Pakatan Rakyat's chant of "Selamatkan Malaysia" (Save Malaysia).

What was Utusan up to this time

It was the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontations in the 1960s which included claiming right to sovereignty of Malaysia and the dispute over the territory of Borneo island that gave birth to the slogan "Ganyang Malaysia".

A little journey into the annals of history courtesy of Utusan Malaysia was made 'available' to Malaysians when its assistant editor-in-chief Zaini Hassan wrote in his column how on September 2, 1964, Indonesia went on to invade the area nearby Labis town which is located within the Tenang state constituency, all as part of a mission to crush Malaysia.

Just why would Zaini want to rake up the past pain?

Was there a lesson not well comprehended? Yes, because Zaini's column on "Ganyang Malaysia vs Selamatkan Malaysia" is resting on the agenda of wrestling the constituency of Tenang for Barisan Nasional by any means the BN thinks possible.

In this respect, the people will remember how Utusan played to the gallery when it accused Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching of “causing problems again” just because she wore “tight clothes” at an aerobics exercise session at Taman Cheras Jaya mosque last month. Before that she had been investigated by the police for apparently making a sermon at a mosque, that too thanks to Utusan who had also accused of her dressing improperly.

Looks like Utusan enjoys playing moral policing whenever it suits its convenience. There was no fear of being charged for defamation when the newspaper called Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng a racist and “anti-Malay” in a December 20, 2010 article entitled “Kebiadapan Guan Eng" (The Rudeness of Guan Eng) that was published a day after a Pakatan rally.

The no-nonsense Lim responded by giving the newspaper two weeks to come out with an apology or face legal action after it accused him of being a foreign stooge and urging the BN government to ban DAP.

Lim’s lawyer Jagdeep Singh Deo said no less than five letters of demand have been sent by Lim to Utusan since 2008; one defamation suit has already made its way to court.

Fear of losing

Zaini's column may not reflect his personal annoyance with the opposition's use of the "Save Malaysia" mantra. Beneath it may lie a greater concern, that of Barisan Nasional's insecurity over the term "Save".

“PAS, which is now being controlled by DAP and PKR, is now hawking the slogan of Jom Ubah, Selamatkan Malaysia (Let’s Change, Save Malaysia) all over Tenang, which will go to the polls on January 30. Let’s wait and see if Selamatkan Malaysia is successfully stopped by the people of Labis, the same way Ganyang Malaysia failed 47 years ago,” Zaini wrote.

To the humble minds, Zaini's words are scary, for they paint a picture of confrontation, of conflict where only might will win. But for the people of Labis, there is no need for such 'spin' on behalf of Umno to insult their intelligence. They know well the difference between ganyang and selamatkan as to crush and to save are as different as night from day.

The pen is credited as being mightier than the sword and by exploiting this one simple truth, Zaini has again been accused of putting the pen to wrong use - to give inaccurate information to the public.

Zaini's column said that “Malaysia, once hated by Sukarno, is now a land of peace, prosperity and fortune,” referring to the Indonesian president, Kusno Sosrodihardjo, during the confrontation period.

He added that today, “millions of Indonesians are now proud to be in Malaysia. It is a land of fortune that provides for their descendants and relatives who live over there and in other countries, as well.”

Indeed, Malaysians, Zaini included have not learned from history. No doubt Malaysia is a land that has fed foreign mouths, it is also a country where Indonesian women who turn up to work as domestic helpers are abused as in the case of Nirmala Bonat and raped, as in the rape case allegation involving Information, Communications and Culture Minister Rais Yatim.

These women from Indonesia turned up on Malaysian shores hopeful of a good life but instead they soon return, unable to erase from memory the pain suffered here.

And precisely for this and several other reasons that during a DAP ceramah on Monday, the PAS candidate for Tenang Normala Sudirman had “shouted the slogan, Jom Ubah, Selamatkan Malaysia (Let’s Change, Save Malaysia).

Pen put to wrong use

Perhaps Zaini had other thoughts when he wrote: “Watching the ceramah (political lecture) , I was shocked. Save Malaysia? Why does Malaysia, which is peaceful and prosperous, need to be saved? Is this the voice of PAS or the conscience of DAP? DAP definitely wants Malaysia handed over to them, right?”

He was referring to the Pakatan convention in December, when the opposition coalition had unveiled its new slogan,Ubah Sekarang, Selamatkan Malaysia (Change Now, Save Malaysia) while Jom Ubah is a DAP slogan used from the time of the 2008 general election campaign.

Somehow, when so much truth is swept under the carpet, it becomes difficult to sieve through all the hidden skeletons in the closet. It muddles the mind and makes it tough to distinguish between reality and propaganda.

Perhaps this is what Zaini experienced when he wrote, “Cikgu Mala, who I think has no idea what she was saying, continued to cry out Selamatkan Malaysia several times,” he added.

Strange because to all those present and those who follow the developments of the soon-to-be-balloted Tenang by-election, Cikgu Mala was sending out an SOS.

Her cry was simply this - Malaysia must not go down in history as a country which is being prostituted by her very own children for their selfish gains.- Malaysia Chronicle

Dear DPM, all work and no play makes Tenang's Azahar a dull boy

BN’s Deputy chairman Muhyiddin Yassin described the coalition's candidate for the Tenang by-election, Mohd Azahar Ibrahim, as a hard-working person.

He said, “I was told that Azahar sleeps for only one or two hours every day. From the body language and manner of speech of the locals, I have gathered that they have confidence in BN.”

No wonder this country is slipping in the world’s ranking for most things. Someone who lacks sleep and sounds like he is suffering from a serious case of insomnia is BN’s preferred candidate? Was he selected because he is awake for 22-23 hours per day?

Muhyiddin gauges the people’s acceptance of BN from the ‘language and manner of speech of the locals’. I too would be all smiles and happy only if I were given RM 100 to wear a free-T-shirt and other freebies.

If BN selected Azahar because he spends more time awake than asleep then something is very wrong with BN’s selection criteria.

Perhaps Azahar is over-stretching himself because he does not know how to balance his work and life. Perhaps he has to work overtime because he is not efficient and cannot complete his work at the office. Perhaps he spends his time watching too much TV.

Maybe he has other nocturnal occupations?

Muhyiddin said, “When I introduced Azahar to them, many replied that they already knew him because of his family background. I also believe that the voters, whether Malay, Chinese or Indian, will go for Azahar.”

What Muhyiddin said is priceless! He gets first prize for empty and meaningless talk. Is this Deputy prime minister material?

If he got to his position as the country’s number two, then he must be one of the better ones in government. So, one really does wonder what the rest are like.

Muhyiddin said that Pas and its allies were desperate in their attempts to discredit Azahar.

He said, “The opposition has been searching high and low for Azahar's mistakes and faults but have not found any. We have already vetted Azahar thoroughly. Otherwise, we would not have fielded him. Azahar is completely clean and the best candidate.”

So would Muhyiddin like to tell us Azahar’s exemplary qualities (apart from his ability to stay awake) which made him BN’s best choice for Tenang?

Muhyiddin then said that Pakatan felt so “pressured” that it resorted to spreading slander about Azahar. The funny thing is that I have not seen any mud being slung at Azahar.

He said, “In many cases, however, voters always know what is true and what is not. They are not easily deceived.”

That is true as Muhyiddin found to his cost.

When BN orchestrated the moves to discredit the PAS candidate Normala, the backlash against MCA and BN was enough to make Muhyiddin call off his pack of dogs Chua Soi Lek and Ng Yen Yen. But the damage to BN had already been done. - Malaysia Chronicle

Muhyiddin and Chua Soi Lek - Stop being childish!

MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek has said he will continue to criticise PAS' candidate Normal Sudirman’s refusal to shake hands with men and her party’s Islamic state agenda despite being ordered to stop, by the Deputy Prime minister and BN polls commander-in-chief Muhyiddin Yassin.

So, is this part of the bigger BN plan in which the DPM shows magnanimity and solidarity with Normala, despite her being in the opposing camp?

No. The DPM is just trying to mitigate the damage done by the failure of his plans, to remove the PAS candidate from the Tenang by-election.

First, they tried to transfer Normala’s husband. This was to destabilise her so that she would follow her husband to Johore Baru, as a good muslim wife, and quit her political shenanigans.

But the couple put their feet down and with the unprecedented public opprobrium, the Education department had to rescind the transfer order.

Second. They tried to distract her with the case of the ‘wardrobe malfunction’ in which CSL admonished Normala for wearing gloves when greeting the public. This ploy was to alienate the Chinese voters and thus dissuade them from voting for PAS in the Tenang by-election.

Initially, no-one in BN or Perkasa showed any sympathy for Normala when she was admonished for wearing gloves, by CSL.

Then MCA’s Ng Yen Yen and Gerakan’s Tan Lian Hoe lent their support to CSL and they too admonished Normala.

This second plan did not succeed and there was even more public disapproval of the BN methods.

When Najib’s two stooges, Perkasa and the Perak mufti were ordered to jump into the fray and admonish CSL, the “muslim solidarity” had come too late and smacked of insincerity and cynicism.

If the concern had been genuine, they would have come to Normala’s defence as soon as her adherence to the religion and adat were questioned by CSL.

None of the BN party machinery gives two figs for Normala. They are just trying to control the damage done by cynical plans that have backfired and left egg on Najib’s face. - Malaysia Chronicle

PAS, DAP make their pitch in show of unity

January 27, 2011

LABIS, Jan 27 — PAS spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat made a brief appearance at a DAP ceramah last night in what was seen as a show of unity between the two Pakatan Rakyat (PR) parties.

His arrival at the Chinese-majority Labis Tengah polling district was announced by DAP Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching, who thanked Nik Aziz for defending her when she came under attack for visiting a mosque.

“The choice is very simple here, vote for Cikgu Normala,” said Nik Aziz, referring to the PAS candidate Normala Sudirman.

Both PAS and the DAP have been forced to be on a defensive mode as the Barisan Nasional (BN) campaign, through its second-largest party MCA, has been harping on the Islamist party’s agenda to form an Islamic state.

Even Normala’s refusal to shake hands with men was turned into a major campaign issue by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, claiming that her practice is not acceptable to the Chinese community.

Dr Chua had also warned Tenang voters against voting for PAS, saying that it would only further strengthen the party in PR and pave the way for the formation of an Islamic state.

Nik Aziz attempted to dismiss Dr Chua’s fear mongering tactic, saying that PAS had in the past faced worse accusations in election campaigns.

“In Kelantan, some people used to say when PAS comes to power everyone will be circumcised. I was angry when I heard this, we are all one, we came from Adam before we were divided by race,” he told some 200 people who gathered outside the DAP operations centre here last night.

Nik Aziz also pointed out that PAS, which has been in power in Kelantan since 1990, has taken steps to improve race relation in the east coast state.

“In Kelantan, we did a lot of things to unite the people, we built a mosque in Rantau Panjang that was designed after a Chinese mosque in Beijing. We did that to ease the tension between the Malays and the Chinese,” said Nik Aziz.

“A few months ago, the state government organised the Cheng Ho Expo. He was a Chinese Muslim who came to Malacca.

“Our objective was to instil the spirit of unity among the Malays and Chinese,” he added.

Call to probe politically-linked families

Call to hang Mamak too ...

KUCHING: Sarawak DAP wants an independent Royal Commission of Inquiry set up to investigate the massive illicit outflow of funds – RM889 billion between 2000 and 2009 – from the country and its link to powerful politically-connected families.

Citing a Washington-based Global Financial Integrity report on the massive illicit financial outflow from Malaysia, state DAP secretary Chong Chieng Jen said: “Not only is the figure shocking but what is more worrying is the trend of increasing illicit outflow of fund from Malaysia.

“In 2000 the estimated outflow was RM67 billion. In 2008, it shot up to RM208 billion.

“Compare this to the total expenditure of the federal government in 2008, which was only RM170 billion.

“The fund illicitly taken out of the country is larger than the total budget of the country’s government in the same year,” he said.

Chong also said that powerful politicians or their family members could be involved in such illicit transfer of money.

He said that the royal commission should investigate Chief Minister Taib Mahmud and his family’s alleged ownership of billions of ringgit worth of property in the US, UK, Australia and Canada.

“If the government truly intends to get to the bottom of the matter, investigation must start with politicians whose family members own valuable property overseas,” he said.

No explaination

Chong, who is also Bandar Kuching MP, said that despite widespread reporting of Taib’s massive wealth, no explanation had been forthcoming from the chief minister.

“Until today, Taib did not say whether the reports in the website are true – how the family members got the money to buy such valuable property.

“Was the money illicitly taken out from Malaysia?

“These are the million-dollar questions that most Sarawakians want to know and expect the authorities to investigate,” Chong said.

He also posed a question for Bank Negara.

“Given the severity of the illicit outflow of funds and the possibility that the country could lose more, doesn’t Bank Negara have the required power and independence to carry out a thorough investigation?” he asked.

He also spoke on the recent unprecedented act of deleting recordings from the State Legislative Assembly’s Hansard (official report).

“When DAP state assemblywoman, Violet Yong, confronted Taib in the state assembly on this issue, the whole text of Yong’s speech was deleted from the Hansard.

“Such unprecedented and improper act on the part of the state assembly speaker in not recording the debate of a member in the House gives rise to more suspicion,” he added.

What a shame to all Sikhs in Malaysia and the world

FMT LETTER

Harrybhullar, via e-mail

A Sikh boy’s hair got cut in a NS camp. Sikh NGOs, instead of protesting vehemently on behalf of the boy and his family, are trying to get popular, meeting with politicians and officials.

The camp commandant alleged only hair was cut and abdicated his responsibilty to ensure the safety of all under his watch. The sensitivity of the other races can be ignored. No big deal.

The Sikh boy’s family are pure Sikhs and are good Sikhs and model citizens of this country. Nothing is happening to the idiots who did this.

Why was the camp commandant not made to take leave until the case is solved?

There’s no accountability on all levels right up till the PM. Tan Sri Darshan and his bullshit organisation, Gerak Sikh Malaysia and its members, are all useless.

What a shame to all Sikhs in Malaysia and the world.

Take the goodies but do the right thing in Tenang

FMT LETTER

From Sebastian Loon, via e-mail

The MCA porn star president Chua Soi Lek has pressed the panic button, according to party insiders in Tenang.

The nepotism-practising Chua and his Labis MP son Tee Yong have thusn come up with a plan to put up a good show to please their Umno masters.

Unable to attract the attention and support of the Chinese electorate with their visible presence, they are printing thousands of 1Malaysia tee-shirts to be distributed free to the Tenang folk.

Insiders say all the Tenang folk need to do is to wear the tee-shirt for two hours and they will be paid RM100 each.

If this is true, please be Tenang. Take the money and wear the tee-shirt for two hours. You need not feel bad about it because it is all taxpayers’ money, meaning yours and our money.

But, come polling day on Saturday (Jan 30), do the right thing with your ballot for the future of the country and our next generation.

The dirty illicit-sex hands of Chua started the religious and racial bigotry ball rolling by complaining about Pakatan-PAS candidate Normala Sudirman wearing gloves to shake hands.

He likened her to PKR president Wan Azizah who also wears gloves when shaking hands with the public.

Do you really want to shake his (Chua) groping hands? He is so “gian” to feel Normala and Wan Azizah’s hands!

Chua is actually insulting the Muslim community with this and I wonder if the Umno Malays have the intelligence to realise it.

Hopefully, rational-thinking Malaysians, especially those in Tenang, will realise that Barisan Nasional (BN) has nothing to offer to forward Malaysia after 53 years of Independence.

They continue with their religious and race agenda to instil fear, to divide and rule Malaysians.

To MCA and Umno, the by-election is about wearing gloves to shake hands, chopping hands of thieves under Hudud laws (I have no fear because I’m not a thief and neither am I a Muslim).

Now, was it Umno (remember how Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein defended the slaughtered cow head protesters in Shah Alam) or PAS that resorted to this ‘violence’?

Was it Umno or PAS that defended the non-Muslims? Johor Mentri Besar Ghani Othman had warned voters in Tenang not to vote for PAS, otherwise the Islamist party may “chop off your hands for stealing”.

This is the classic IQ level of a BN MB.

Instead of resorting to propagating the virtues of a truly 1Malaysia through unity-themed campaigns, we hear the same old threats to instil fear among the various ethnic communities.

Now, we hear the MCA’s duo of Chua wanting to print 1Malaysia tee-shirts for show. Please remember this, Tenang folk. By supporting
MCA and Umno, you are endorsing that:

Money can buy support; Money can buy sex; and Money can buy anything.

Chua and his son are fighting for their political survival because Labis is supposedly their stronghold. You are fighting for our future. So, come Saturday, the future is in your hands or should I say, the ballot that you cast.

Traditional greeting from Normala would please the Chinese

FMT LETTER

From Boleh2, via e-mail

DAP can overcome the handshake issue easily. Normala Sudirman can employ the traditional Chinese way of greeting by cupping her own two hands together at her chest, without even having to touch the other person, just like when the Chinese traditional New Year greeting style.

The Chinese people will be very happy to receive it as they deem it very auspicious. That will help her gain enormous points among the Chinese.

Dim-witted school headmistress and the future of our children

FMT LETTER

From Tamilachi, via e-mail

All the people making comments about Interlok should realise that the real victims here are the Indian children going to the local schools in the states where this book is used.

Even before any resolution to the issue has been worked out, the headmistress of SMK Taman Tasik Ampang made a speech recently during assembly that the Indian community from the lower caste in India had migrated to Malaysia and were contented because they were better recognised here.

Who is she to come to the conclusion that all the migrants from India are from the lower caste? If a headmistress is unable to understand and decipher what unity is and how to treat people equally as postured in the book, how can the school children understand?

At this rate, children from other community will obviously started taunting and teasing the Indian kids by calling them the ‘p’ word. That is the core reason why the book should be removed. The majority of Malaysian are still not aware of what is a taboo subject among different races.

We are only aware of the rights and wrongs of particular community. Please try to understand other peoples’ feelings.

Interlok unlocks agenda of Umno and exposes impotence of Pakatan

FMT LETTER

From R Shan, via e-mail

Not only is Interlok insulting, it also proves that Umno has a freehand in writing its own ‘history’ based on what it perceived real history to be.

But does Umno know that the Malays were fishing and farming while the royal rulers were wining and dining with the colonialists?

Does it know that the Malays had sold their souls to the British masters whereas the Indians had to toil to ensure the whitemen and the royalty could live comfortably off their sweat?

Does Umno know that the sultans were not ready to embark on a journey to independence in 1957 as they did not want to lose their privileges? Today, Umno is doing the same thing as the colonialists. Let’s look at some of the comments in Interlok.

(a) Maniam seperti orang India yang lain, tidak pernah khuatir tentang keselamatan isterinya. (pp 218). I don’t know the relevance of this, such an insult to Indian women.

(pp 211) This guy is so messed up, he does not know the difference between North and South India since the proto -Dravidian language has about 85 branches that is in the south, including that used by the Brahui community in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran. Yes, the Indus Valley civilisation.

(pp 211). Derogatory when you don’t know the culture.

(d) Mereka berasak-asak seperti kambing. (pp 211) Contradictory to the above

(pp 216) Self-serving to justify, the kerja to ensure the Melayu can continue to be spoon-fed.

(pp 218). Chinese are opportunists and that is a known fact. How is this reflected on the caste issue?

(pp 218). What manusia? Go and look at the statistics of Indians who did well before the ’80s and how they were treated as 2nd class after that. Umno propaganda with their toothless mandores.

(pp 218 & 219). Are you talking about Umno and their kuncu-kuncu?

(pp 219). Are you talking about Umno and their kuncu-kuncu?

(pp 219) Are you talking about Umno and their kuncu-kuncu?

Are you talking about Umno and their kuncu-kuncu? I wonder why we have gloved half-past six doctors within the Muslim community.

(pp 220). So what is so wrong with it? Yes, the cow is the the ultimate source of life, yet the Muslims will slaughter it.

(pp 224). Aah! Sarcasm? Did you know sirih is actually an aphrodisiac? These days they call it Paan in Amrica and it is a booming business.

(o) Dia gertak sahaja, orang kulit hitam ini tentu takut kecut. (pp 253). I like the part of orang hitam who speaks well of how Malay literature has progressed.

Suppiah terjungkir. (pp 256) and Dia berasa bangga kerana anjing orang putih itu jinak dengannya. (pp 276). Thank you. At least with orang putih we knew how to deal with them, but a farcical Malay laurerate like who will sell his soul to ensure Umno maintains its hegemony is a bigger snake.

I must thank the ungrateful Pakatan Rakyat for their silence on this issue. Like Umno, they are only interested in the vote count as for them, Malaysian Indians are balls to be kicked around as and when to maintain their status quo.

Either way, since Malaysian Indians are going to be kicked around…then with Umno and now with Pakatan, why don’t they just unite and stand steadfast under Hindraf as they seem to be the only ones who have not swayed from their agenda nor their goal to ensure humanity prevails.

When thieves, clowns and dinosaurs open their mouths…

SHORTCUT TO SUCCESS.

In his latest, vaingloroius, public appearance, in Sarekei, Taib announced that there is no shortcut to success except by working hard. Unfortunately he did not go on to explain what he meant by “working hard.”

Did he mean working as a labourer on the oil palm plantations of his business cronies for a daily wage barely enough to keep alive on? Or did he mean stealing native lands to sell on to cronies at a huge personal profit?

And success? What is that in the Taib dictionary? Possession of billions of ringgit stolen from the people of Sarawak? A series of rigged elections won by bribery and intimidation? Or just staying alive in miserable conditions imposed by a corrupt and uncaring regime interested only in private profit?

Now he knows we would like to know maybe he will explain himself in his next public appearance!

DISINTERESTED HELP?

Speaking at a public function, BN deputy CM and SUPP boss George Chan told anyone prepared to listen to him that in Sarawak “we don’t help people based on race but based on need,” in reference to Pakatan Rakyat’s proposal to set up the RM1Billion Dayak Endowment Fund.

There might be a smidgen of truth in that claim. The Taib regime, of which Chan is a leading member both by marriage and political affiliation, does seem to take the needs of itself and its cronies seriously and gives them whatever it can whenever it can!

But the real truth is that we (the BN) help ourselves; and to everything we can lay our hands on. Maybe race does not enter into it though religion certainly does. The real criteria for help is “Are you one of us?” So the help trickles up; not down and the ordinary member of the public gets nothing while the sharks gorge themselves.

Wake up George! Have you not noticed that the SUPP, once so pure and communist, is dead and just awaits burial. That will come at the next election!

MINISTERIAL STUPIDITIES.

Deputy Planning Minister, Awang Tengah made a public fool of himself by announcing that the completion of the Bakun and Murum dams “would stabilise Sarawak’s electricity supply.”

Surely a “planning “ Minister should be aware that without a single new volt from these dams Sarawak’s electricity is in surplus of supply over demand?

Trying to justify this ridiculous statement the minister claimed that new businesses would be coming which would need the extra electricity. He was not able to name a single one nor to say when their arrival would take place. That is because no investor in his right mind will put money into Taib controlled, and milked, businesses when the latter is only weeks or months away from electoral defeat and probable prison sentence.

Awang Tanah Tengah might be better occupied considering his own position after a BN defeat in the state election.

SHADOW COMMUNITY.

“Without pride and integrity we will remain in the shadows and at the mercy of others.”

These words, addressed to the Dayak community might easily have been spoken by PKR leader Baru Bian; but were in fact those, of all people, BN Minister James Masing. So let’s look at Masing and BN in the context of those stirring words.

In the first place how can Masing, or any other BN personality, especially Taib, speak about integrity. People who have stripped Sarawak bare of nearly all its wealth for private gain. People who have falsified elections by open and barefaced bribery. People who have stolen native lands to sell on, at huge profit, to their business cronies. Integrity? They don’t know the meaning of the word!

Pride. Well that’s different. They take pride in their villainy and in the illicit riches which they have gained from. Billions abroad, private jet travel at taxpayer expense, weddings at public expense. Whatever they do, big or small, is tainted by criminality. What pride has been left to the Dayaks who have allowed themselves to be trampled on by the Taib gang? Well they can get it back. By kicking Taib, Masing and the rest into the dustbin of a rotten past and working with Pakatan Rakyat to build a prosperous future for ALL the people of the State.
