PDC senior manager claims trial over 'false claim'

K Baskaran denies charges by MACC that he had made a false claim for a time recording item worth RM5,700.

Penang Development Corporation Management Services senior manager K Baskaran has denied charges by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) that he had made a false claim for a time recording item worth RM5,700.

He was picked-up by the MACC at 1pm in Penang yesterday.

Baskaran, 53, who has served the PDC, a state-owned agency, for 28 years, claimed trial at the Sessions Court today for making the fraudulent claim for the item, which was not supplied, in 2006.

He had allegedly produced a false invoice to Dalilah Yusoff of the PDC's Finance and Investment Division, for the purchase of an EN200 Ethernet Communication Module from Gizasoft Technologies Sdn Bhd.

He allegedly committed the offence under section 11(c) of the Anti Corruption Act 1997, at the PDC building in Bayan Baru on Aug 11, 2006.

If found guilty, he faces a fine five times the value of the bribe and up to 20 years' jail.

Deputy public prosecutor Janariah Abdul Mutalib proposed that the court set bail at RM20,000.

Baskaran's counsel N Rajivan, however, pleaded for a lower bail in view of the former's long service to the corporation, and that he is married with two children.

Rajivan added that by setting bail at that amount, the accused is being 'punished' before the trial even began as the bail is much higher than the amount of the bribe in the offence.

Judge Roslan Hamid then set bail at RM10,000 with one surety. The case is fixed for mention on Jan 27 next year.

Jais: Shiite adherents not scared of ISA

Some of them were arrested under the ISA, and yet they are still active, says Jais deputy director.

Selangor Islamic Authority (Jais) deputy director of enforcement Mohamad Rais Rasid said that the use of the Internal Security Act had failed to deter the Shiite sect's activities.

“Some of them were arrested under the ISA, and yet they are still active,” he said.

NONEMohamad Rais added that the Islamic authorities will nevertheless continue to monitor and take action against the group it labeled as deviant even though it may not be able to stamp it out completely.

“Even if actions against them failed to eradicate the movement, at least the public knows what Shiism is.”

“If there are actions from religious authorities - and if they truly understand what Islam is and our faith as followers of the Sunnah Wal Jamaah school of thought - they will stay away from Shiite teachings,” reasoned the Jais official.

Some of the more aggressive actions that have been taken against Shiite adherents included the 1997 crackdown which saw 10 leaders of the sect held for two years without trial under the dreaded ISA for causing “religious disharmony” and being “a national threat”.

These include lecturers Lutpi Othman, Fadzullah Shuib and Che Kamarulzaman Che Ismail.

Nine of them were released in 1998 - one year after their detention, while Che Kamarulzaman was only released in 1999, though he is reportedly still living under restrictions to his personal freedom.

All three Shiite practitioners however are still active in practicing and propagating Shiite teachings to date.

Shiite teachings persistent

Commenting on the resilience of the branch of Islam thought considered deviant in Malaysia, Mohamad Rais said that the persistence of the belief can be seen via the blossoming of blogs and websites about Shiism.

“However, we cannot pinpoint where they are operating from, because it is difficult to trace blogs. If we have the location, we will investigate thoroughly one by one,” he said.

According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) website, there are an estimated 2,000 people who professed the minority Shiite branch of the Islamic faith, considered to be deviant in Malaysia.

The government considers only the Sunni denomination to be legal in Malaysia. Sunni Islam is the world's largest branch of the religion, followed by Shiite Islam.

Law gives S'gor a say over state sec's post, says rep

A state rep argues that the appointment of the state secretary does not necessarily have to be made by the PSC.

The Selangor constitution does not provide the federal government full authority to decide on the appointment of the state secretary, claimed Kampung Tunku state assemblyperson Lau Weng San.

Lau argued that Article 52 (1) of the state constitution states that the position must be made by the "relevant services commission" and not necessarily the federal Public Services Commission (PSC).

"It is clear that the appointment of the state secretary does not necessarily have to be made by the PSC. The appointment can also be made by the 'relevant services commissions' such as the Selangor Services Commission.

"The phrase 'Public Services Commission' was not mentioned specifically in the Selangor constitution," said Lau in a statement today.

Lau was commenting on a report by Sinar Harian which said that the palace had endorsed the PSC's recommendation of former Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) director Mohd Khusrin Munawi as the new state secretary.

"In my view, the decision has been confirmed because His Highness has given his consent the appointment," said the sultan's private secretary Mohamad Munir Bani, in a front page report by the Malay daily.

Over the past week, there had been mounting speculation that Khusrin would receive the appointment and it was confirmed by the chief secretary to the government Mohd Sidek Hassan yesterday.

Khusrin had long been regarded as a thorn in the state government's flesh through a series of controversial decisions that had put them in a spot.

His appointment is also the latest in a series of events that has widening the rift between the state and federal government.

State secretary accountable to MB

Taking his legal argument further, Lau said that the state constitution dictates that the state secretary, along with the state financial officer and legal adviser, must take an oath of secrecy before the menteri besar and not the Sultan.

"This means that the state secretary must be directly accountable to the menteri besar," said Lau.

He adds that naturally, the appointment of the state secretary must be referred to the state government for its advice.

Meanwhile, a highly placed source in the Selangor government told Malaysiakini that Khusrin was not among three individuals recommended by the menteri besar to the palace for the state secretary's position.

The trio, said to include a local government head and a senior state civil servant, were shortlisted and interviewed by a special panel appointed by the menteri besar.

"Perhaps Mohd Khusrin's name was forwarded to the palace by the outgoing state secretary," said the source.

Thorny relationship

Yesterday, the Selangor menteri besar's office issued a statement denying that Mohd Khusrin's appointment, in replacement of Ramli Mahmud, was final.

Mohd Khusrin's thorny relationship with the state government largely stemmed from his ban on speakers at mosques and surau that without Jais' permission.

The most prominent case involved Jais' decision to take legal action against former Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainal Abidin for giving a religious talk at a bungalow in Ampang last year.

Recently, Khusrin issued a warning to the committee members of Surau Al Ehsan, Gombak for inviting PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, a renowned religious scholar, to a speaking function on Nov 22.

He had also suspended the committee of the Al Huda surau in Kajang for allowing non-Muslim Teo Nie Ching, the MP for Serdang and a non-Muslim, to enter its premises during a breaking of fast function.

Khusrin sparked another controversy when he insisted that non-Muslims must be subjected to mandi hadas (ritualistic cleansing baths) before entering a mosque or surau.

Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad had questioned the validity of this decision.

MB's aide: S'gor is proof Pakatan can run Putrajaya

Pakatan Rakyat’s management of the state’s economy debunks claims that the coalition’s plans for Putrajaya would bankrupt the country.

The Selangor government's track record in managing the state's economy is proof that Pakatan Rakyat's policies are viable for the country.

NONEFaekah Hussin, the political secretary to the Selangor menteri besar, said that the government had spent vast amounts of money on the state but its coffers were in good health.

“These problems did not make Selangor bankrupt. Instead, revenues have increased throughout 2010 and there is a balanced budget for 2011.

“This is far better than some BN-controlled states which tabled a deficit budget. In fact, the federal government had been tabling a deficit budget for 10 years.

“Pakatan's manifesto will not make Malaysia bankrupt if it is managed well, honestly, transparently and responsibly, such as what is being practiced in Selangor,” she said.

Faekah was responding to Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's claims that Pakatan's pledge to provide a RM500 special allowance to those in the public teaching sector would bankrupt the nation.

Track record

The pledge was among 10 promises which Pakatan said will be fulfilled within the first 100 days of conquering Putrajaya.

Faekah also listed down numerous achievements by the state government to prove that it was capable of managing the economy.

Among others, Faekah said that religious teachers have received a RM500 pay rise as well as a RM500 bonus for festivals and year-end bonuses.

She added that the state government, through Menteri Besar Incorporated, had successfully identified and collected RM392 million in debts from Talam Corporation Bhd owed since a decade ago, when BN ruled the state.

“As a result, RM50 million from this debt recovery exercise is being returned to the public through the Selangor Micro Credit Scheme (Skimsel) to help the rural poor while RM20 million was used to help the urban poor,” she said.

1Malaysia vs real reforms

On the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) schemes, Faekah said that the state had been working hard to “save” many failed projects and had resolved low-cost housing projects located in areas such as Bukit Botak, Ukay Perdana and Alam Perdana.
http://malaysiakini.com/news/130023

At an administrative level, she said the state government had established the Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) to identify mismanagement and other administrative wrongdoings.

azlanIn addition, the state government had also succeeded in bringing greater public participation in the administration of the state through the Freedom of Information Enactment and becoming the first state in the country to have public hearings in all local governments.

Faekah said that all this, and others, were achieved with state revenues through proper management of the state resources without relying on the federal government.

“Muhyiddin can continue repeating his 'Malay first' commitment and repeat his 1Malaysia rhetoric but Pakatan will continue to do what it promised: Reforms through accountability and responsibility,” she said.

Gobala-PKR war of words rages on

MP N Gobalakrishnan insists newly-minted vice-president N Surendran is not even a party member.

The war of words between the Padang Serai MP from PKR, N Gobalakrishnan, and the party leadership rages on, with the former casting doubts over the legitimacy of the recent appointments in the party.

NONEHoning in on newly-minted vice-president N Surendran - a relative political novice - Gobalakrishnan had questioned his credentials, insisting that he is not even a party member.

“It makes me wonder how Surendran was appointed when he was not even a member of the party. I question his integrity when he speaks about the PKR election,” said Gobalakrishnan (more popularly known as Gobala).

The former MIC Youth leader also alleged that Surendran - a human rights lawyer - did not vote during the recently-concluded party elections.

“His name doesn't appear in the voters' list of the Lembah Pantai cabang where he claims to be a member or any other cabang in the country.

“Can he show proof of where he voted or at least produce three witnesses who have seen him voting or attend the divisional annual general meeting? Then again, I know that there are means to slot his name or any name in the voters list if (PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim) wishes to do so,” he said snidely in a statement this morning.

NONETrouble started between Gobalakrishnan and the party when he had openly supported former PKR leader Zaid Ibrahim in alleging that the party elections had been riddled with malpractices and fraud.

However, it intensified after the announcement of the new party appointments which saw the Indian quota for vice-presidency going to Surendran, who until now had never held any party position.

Gobalakrishnan had then took to Twitter, hurling vitriol at the party leaders, namely Anwar and deputy president Azmin Ali, claiming that they do not care about the welfare of the Indian community.

'But I am not ranting'

Claiming that his tweets were not “rants”, Gobalakrishnan insisted that his statements were also “not vague, baseless or unproductive”.

“I do not have any personal agenda or gain in all that I do. I always strive for justice for all especially the downtrodden Indian community. This has been my struggle since I started my political career in MIC about 23 years ago,” he said.

He had also challenged the party to address several Indian issues including reopening the Hindu Sivan Temple in Bukit Gasing as well as the poor estate workers in the Coalfields estates.

Claiming that Anwar had shut down construction of the temple within just 100 days of Pakatan Rakyat helming the Selangor state government, Gobalakrishnan said that it was due to the “dragon fencing”.

“This problem existed during the BN rule in Selangor but they did not go to the extreme of closing the temple! Being a successful human rights lawyer, I challenge Mr Surendran to assist to open the temple to the devotees for the New Year,” he said.

It was previously reported back in 2009 in The Sun that a stop-work order was issued on the temple in 2007 because of safety concerns on the landslope development. Only an area of 1,400 sq m was approved for the temple but the final plans showed it occupying 5,400 sq m.

Gobalakrishnan had also claimed that the Coalfields estate workers are being evicted from their quarters without compensation.

“The above are only a very few of the many problems faced by the Indian community in the country which Anwar is not bothered to assist. He doesn't care about the Indian community,” he said.

“If any disciplinary action should be taken, it should be against Anwar first for closing the Bukit Gasing Sivan temple and (Selangor exco member) Xavier Jayakumar for using gangsterism during the recent PKR elections,” he said.

The battle for Taib's affections

taib-mahmud-new-wifeCOMMENT Sunday lunch with the rest of the family in the Taib household is never going to be the same again. Sarawak Chief Minister, 74-year-old Taib Mahmud has taken a new young bride from Jordan and at 28-years-old, the age difference is an eye-watering 46 years.

Even Taib’s youngest daughter from his union with his Polish–Australian wife, Laila, who died last year, is only 38 years old. It will be awkward for Hanifah to call a younger woman “mama”.

Kuching may have been buzzing with interest and amusement at this union but this latest news has probably filled his political associates and his family with dread. Will Taib find the time to concentrate on affairs of state, at a crucial time in Sarawak’s political history, with the Sarawak state elections and the general election due soon?

Or will Taib be more interested in the affairs of the heart?

Will his ‘new-found love’ be able to soothe away his troubles and rejuvenate his tired old body that he is able to summon the strength to focus on the upcoming elections?

Will the happy young bride, reluctantly release Taib to attend to matters of the state or will she want to keep him all to herself?

The sniggers of the domestic staff as they discuss their employers’ playful romps should be interesting.

What about the rest of the family? How have they taken to Taib’s latest 'acquisition'? They must be wondering if she is able to influence him and change his cosy domestic arrangements, which thus far have been managed by his daughters.

How will they even react if the new mistress of the household decides to move the furniture around to her satisfaction? All those little momentoes of their own mother might be consigned to the storeroom.

Did they ask “papa” to make the new lady in his life sign a pre-nuptial agreement?

If the rest of the family and his political colleagues do not make his new wife welcome, she might make him spend time away from Sarawak – his political base. Will he be able to hold the country together if he is frequently absent from his heartlands?

At stake is a multi billion ringgit empire which includes city properties, country estates, land, cars, shares and control of companies spread all over the world.

Last May, Taib told Semariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hashidah Syed Aman Ghazali, that he had no plans to remarry after he was widowed.

He said, “I am already 74. It's too old for me to get a new partner now”.

He joked that he missed Laila and that she was his “accountant” who would carry money on her whenever she went with him for functions.

He joked and said, “Now, if I need money, I have to ask my bodyguards.”

At least, the new bride is assured of a new role when they are out in public.

But it must be worrying for the rest of the family, if she decides to be in charge of more than just a few thousand ringgits in her purse. What if she had grand designs on the rest of Taib’s finances?

Taib’s rags-to-riches rise is inextricably linked to his political well-being.

Sarawak politics has just become more interesting with Taib’s marriage.

People have been unkind about her and asked “Did she marry for his money or his morals?”

What if it was the other way around? The new bride might still be the sweet innocent party and from what we know of Taib, he is cunning and an opportunist.

What if he saw an opportunity in his new wife’s Middle Eastern credentials as a means and an excuse to expand his business empire and political influence, in that part of the world.

Didn’t he just officially launch a 'world halal food hub' in the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), which is the new development corridor in central Sarawak?

When he remarried, one can expect the crafty old devil wasn’t just thinking about his private pleasures but also about extending his political and business domination. - Malaysian Mirror

Malaysia colleges a hotbed for militant recruiting

Zionist APCO reverse propaganda Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Chechnya, Pakistan, its now the turn of Malaysia For God or for fame?Malaysia's universities have become prime recruiting grounds for Islamic militants

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA'S universities have become prime recruiting grounds for Islamic militants looking for youngsters to draw into terrorist networks, security experts warn.
Unlike neighbouring Indonesia and Thailand, the moderate Muslim-majority nation has remained largely free of terror attacks but there are fears that lax admission policies have created a haven for jihadists.
A string of arrests and detentions this year have highlighted the growing presence of radicals using Malaysia as a base to sign up supporters and plan attacks.
In June, authorities deported 45-year-old Al-Qaeda-linked Syrian scholar Aiman Al Dakak along with eight other foreigners from Syria, Yemen, Nigeria and Jordan, most of them students.
Al Dakak gave lectures to Malaysian and foreign students at his Kuala Lumpur home, allegedly indoctrinating them with jihadist ideology and urging them to carry out bombings on places of worship in the multi-ethnic nation.
The following month, engineer Mohamad Fadzullah was detained under internal security laws for trying to recruit students at Malaysia's national university and technical institutes for the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) extremist group. -- AFP
But why Malaysian officials are tight-lipped about this issue ?OR they don't know that nurturing a monster of terror can turn on its patron? They should look at Pakistan (the failed ever state in world !) and learn a lesson Malaysia is in a state of dilemma. While it is considered one of the better administered democracy and a modern country amongst the Islamic world like Turkey, it is also seen by other Islamists as dithering away from Islamic oneness! Malaysia fiercely wants to retain the image it has painstakingly created for itself- that of a modern and moderate Islamic state. But it cannot deny visa to Islamic clergy from Middle East. That will be seen as closing doors on Islams most important proponents. Malaysia wants no association with anything concerned with terror as the economic impact of that image is huge for the country to bear. How that country chooses to balance both worlds would be interesting to witness

Perak Saga: A rerun in Selangor

  1. It is never easy for me to write about the KSN, Tan Sri Sidek Hassan. Usually I am full of praise of the KSN but his latest action after his defense of Nik Ali in Penang begins to raise a lot of question. It is difficult for me to interpret his recent action in the appointment of Selangor State Secretary. I cannot find any good reason other than political in interpreting the choice of candidate and the manner the appointment was made. This will create another dent among the educated masses to give BN another chance in Selangor.

  2. While most bloggers and online media would argue from the point of Selangor State Law, I prefer to look at the issue from the angle of productivity. I don’t have a copy of SS laws any my search on the internet has not been successful. I suspect and assume the law does not differ much with Perak State laws since every piece written seems to point to Article 36(c).

    ;

  3. With the assumption that the law in Perak and Selangor is similar with the appointment of SS, then it is clear that the blessing of the Sultan is not necessary. The appointment is dependent on the choice put forward by the service commission. The Sultan blessings, approval is not required. Yet the KSN finds it fit to use the Sultan in sending out the message of appointment. This is not right.

    ;

  4. The appointment of SS should lie with the State Service Commission because it is a State post. It is not a Federal post. Therefore it is imperative the right of the state is to be respected. For the Selangor State to move efficiently, it needs the support of a team player. The SS must be someone who can execute the decision of the State Councilor and State Legislative Assembly. If the person does not have the confidence of the MB and the State Exco than it is going to be very difficult for the MB to manage the state. For the record it is not the job of the Sultan or KSN to manage the state.

    ;

  5. In appointing such an important post it is important that the person that is appointed is professional and could act impartially irrespective of who governs the state of the day. In this case, I think Kushrin has proven to me as a person who has failed to meet this important criterion based on the recent issues in the last few years. This is a job for a professional, talented and a politically impartial person. In less than one year the KSN has dented my trust in him. This would be the biggest dent. As for Kushrin, he should do the honorable thing i.e. declining the post in the best interest of the state.

Corrupt political leadership does not attractive men of outstanding integrity; neither can it be expected to enact effective laws to maintain high integrity in government. That truism has practically reduced our options to only one – a change of political leadership. That is, if we are still serious about restoring the rule of law and the pursuit of excellence for the country. ”He is not immune from action under the law. Investigation can be made if he had acted beyond the scope of his official duties,” MACC’s Legal and Prosecution Division Director Datuk Abdul Razak Musa told reporters.

Fear is, and has always been, the hallmark of political tactics. The people will only willingly submit to tyranny if they are made to believe that without government a fearful state of affairs might obtain. No other emotion can bypass rational argumentation, grab allegiance and push people to violence like fear.
Since love and fear can hardly exist together, if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved.
Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince
Machiavelli was writing for kings and emperors. Nowadays, of course, politicians have the loyalty of the people, and no longer need to be feared. Rather, they use fear for the further purpose of expanding their power.
The very existence of government is predicated on fear, the fear of chaos and general violence of all against all. Never mind that government itself is the greatest creator of chaos and violence; never mind that Anarchies have always been less violent than their contemporary societies; government propaganda and Big Media have been successful in implanting the belief that Anarchy equals chaos and violence by constantly making this correlation. Now we are stuck with the laughable absurdity of a society of people who fear that, if we remove the entity which causes wars, outlaws victimless crimes and takes over vast swaths of said society, we will have widespread violence and chaos.
The dishonest usurpation of the Articles of Confederation, and its thuggish replacement by the US Constitution (a document which deserves a place alongside the Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf as rallying points for the enemies of freedom), was based on fear of widespread chaos, using the Shay Rebellion as the case in point. Very often, fear is generated by taking one or a few isolated cases and letting people’s imagination run wild. “What if we get rebellions all around? What will we do without a strong central military to protect us?” These scenarios are always outlandish, but as long as people believe that it might just happen, they will fear it, no matter how improbable it is (see, for instance, the tactics of global warming fearmongers).
Now think of all the areas in which government takes over, intervenes or legislates, and you will find a tactic (if not all tactics) based on fear. Fear of terrorism, fear of other “countries,” fear of “immigrants” taking over, fear of losing one’s culture, fear of being attacked, fear of being sick, fear of dying, fear of accidents, fear of having to take responsibility for one’s actions, fear of losing control over other people.Fear, of course, is rarely the actual reason underlying any government policy. The actual reasons for government policies are generally more mundane: corporate favours, popularity, interventionist foreign policy, expansion of the tax base, control over prevalent ideas, and so on. But fear is the most powerful tool that they possess in order to get those policies accepted and supported by the general population.
Take the “War on Terror.” The WoT has been a tremendously powerful and efficient tool in expanding the power of government. Why? Because the fear tactics underlying it became ridiculously easy to implement after 9-11. This operation made it easy for everyone to swallow the party line that “terrorists want to kill you for your freedom.” Never mind that the 9-11 attacks came after a concerted strategy that aimed to attack US military assets in the Middle East, and that the enemy of the terrorists is the interventionist policy of the US Empire, not “our freedom.” Never mind that we are not free. Never mind that the attacks that came afterwards had absolutely nothing to do with stopping terrorism.
Most FEAR MONGERING start with government lies and deceit, and the 9-11 attacks really illustrated the power of fear. Unthinkingly, the American public bought the lies completely, because they were gripped with fear and the desire for revenge. Fear overrides discourse and thought. Fear is primal, visceral, animalistic, a similar overwhelming feeling to the one primitive man must have felt when he faced a saber-tooth tiger. A man experiencing fear either flees or fights. If he cannot fight himself, then he will cheer on those who can. Thus the terrorists’ strategy of sinking the US government in war debt predictably won out, because their terrorist attacks were so spectacular that they had the expected effect.

Fear is, and has always been, the hallmark of political tactics. The people will only willingly submit to tyranny if they are made to believe that without government a fearful state of affairs might obtain. No other emotion can bypass rational argumentation, grab allegiance and push people to violence like fear. he always remind me not be vulgar but street is my university ,

hat we are among the most corrupt societies in the world needs little reiteration. But that's not the real bad news. The real bad news is that our corruption has several layers - in fact layers upon layers - which may make it all but...
one were to trace the genesis of the epidemic of corruption it could be argued that the disease could well have been spawned during MAHATIR's regime and the licence raj inevitably fostered both the generation of black money and the unholy nexus between politicians, bureaucrats and big business. With its catchy slogan of 'BERSEH CEKAP AMANAH' and its populist gimmicks i's asocialism was in fact the legitimising of a mahatirmafia.

Corruption is not about money and power alone. It is anything and everything that compromises morality. And today morality is the first casualty everywhere — from Parliament to dirtiest Toilet Ministery, from mall to TAXI PERMIT and from stock market to school.

This is not a news item that is likely to make the government or its vast machinery sit up and take note. After all, in all 'fairness', we have a humongous machinery in the name of government that does not sit up and take note of anything for that matter, does it?
Clearly, service mentality and the Government rarely go together in our part of the world. This is because by definition, one is supposed to have no service or performance matrix for government servants. By definition, no one in the government sector may easily be penalized, leave alone lose his or her job, for such cavalier treatment of those they are supposed to serve. And yet, the same government servants will be at their servile best before political masters who often demand services they are not entitled to.

NATIONAL STUDENT ASSEMBLY 11.1.11: Students Of The Nation, Unite!

By The Worried Student

Be part of history. Be part of change. If you are a student, from any university or college, register now for Perhimpunan Mahasiswa Negara and to join Malaysia’s first mega-scaled Students Parliament on 11.1.11.

This nation has a rich and colourful history of student activism. Such activism has brought about change to marginalised communities in the past but it has since been wiped out from our history books by belligerent academics and university administrators. Recent events have again put Malaysian students in the limelight. Students who have voiced out, who have questioned the status quo, who have taken part in the democratic process of this nation have been victimised and persecuted for putting into practice their fundamental rights.

The Universities and University Colleges Act 1974, the Educational Institutions Act 1976 and other laws have been used as tools by the Establishment (the Haves) to silence students (the Have-Nots) for they fear the students, they know that students have the inherent power to change things they don’t like. And so, university autonomy is dead. Academic freedom is dead. Ask Azmi Sharom. Students of this great nation have been robbed of their idealism. However, the greatest crime of it allis that apathy has been allowed toreign.

Apathy amongst students is a result of ignorance and an effective system that seeks to popularise apathy. As a result, we have become victims of our own doing. This reign of apathy must end. We must remind ourselves that we are a part of a larger community, one that we owe a responsibility to.

The struggle for our rights and liberties to enable us to uphold our responsibilities is paramount. But so far, it has been done disparately and ineffectively.

It is now time to ORGANISE.

On the 11th of January 2011, students from every private and public university/college all across the country, shall come together as one to demand that they be recognised as equals in society, to demand the abolishment of unjust laws, to demand that their rights be respected and as a show of solidarity to students everywhere, to make it known that in your fight for truth, freedom, equality and justice, you are not alone.

If you have ever felt as if you were another pawn in the system, if you have ever felt like you needed to do something for the marginalised, if you believe that something is simply wrong with the way things are, if you wish to put forth your issues and causes, or if you just believe in something - come and join us on 11.1.11. At this point in time all across the globe, students everywhere from South America to Europe are reclaiming the streets and finding their voice again, to speak up against injustice and oppression. We must join hands in this noble struggle and be one with all the students of the world.

Let us show those in the corridors of power that we are a force to be reckoned with. Student unity is the first step towards achieving the impossible. It is high time we realised that we are all in this together. We shall be victims no more. Fellow students, the time has come.

Let us take charge, again.

The Worried Student a.k.a. Haji Lou Reed is a student from a local university that is exclusive to non-citizens and bumiputeras, ignoring about half of the nation’s very own people. He wishes to write more for this awesome blawg but is worried that by being an active LoyarBurokker he will be a target for academic assassination and will never graduate.

I read this out to my parents, and my emotions took the better of me. I have always been very disappointed with my (mostly bourgeois/upper middle class) friends and how they viewed the local environment, apathetically. They complained about the social (and political) situation in the country, treating it as a lost cause, and always telling me off as being a ‘intellectual poser’ because I spoke of social change. All they ever want to do is to migrate to Australia. But I always knew that everything was going to be alright. I constantly tried to reassure those who did want to migrate to have faith in our generation. I am finally at ease, knowing that there are like minded people out there who actually care. The future is in our hands and we can make a change. Our time is now, lets make a lasting impression

Karpal Singh wanted Nawar Sodomized ?

“YB Karpal Singh Demanded The Govt To Investigate Into Anwar Ibrahim’s Sodomy Case”

c

It has been reported, that on 21-12-2010 YB Karpal Singh has said that he had asked for YB Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when he was the Deputy Prime Minister, to be investigated for sodomy.

It was reported as follow: “The DAP chairman Karpal Singh said yesterday he had in 1997 asked sodomy allegations against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to be investigated in his capacity as an opposition member of parliament MP.

Karpal, disputing the account of Datuk Zaid Ibrahim over his (Karpal’s) own role in the issue, said he was approached by Anwar’s driver Azizan Abu Bakar and a few others over the sodomy allegations against Anwar.”

I did bring this up in Parliament, that in 1997 YB Karpal Singh did say in a DAP ceramah in Federal Hotel that he has proof that YB Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was involved in sodomy. At long last it has been confirmed by YB Karpal Singh otherwise another defamation suit. Civil suits flying all over the place. How scary!

On 08 February 2009 YB Karpal Singh has called upon YB Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in HERE, to step down as the leader of the coalition (PR) and in o8 March 2009 (a month later) he turned around to say that “Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim can remain as Opposition Leader because he continues to command the confidence of opposition MPs, said DAP chairman Karpal Singh.” Another flip-flop!

PKR confirms Surendran’s membership

Anwar says Surendran qualified for PKR veep post

December 27, 2010

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 27 – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim defended today PKR’s unexpected decision to appoint N. Surendran as vice-president, indirectly sniping at rebel MP N. Gobalakrishnan’s for questioning the move.

The PKR de facto leader (picture) explained on Twitter this evening that the civil rights lawyer was appointed to represent PKR as a vice-president as he was “qualified” and “credible”.

“Surendran as vp-qualified, credible,” he tweeted, in response to a follower’s message requesting that he posted Gobalakrishnan’s tweet attacks on his blog.

The follower had written, “You should post @Ngobalakrishnan tweets on yr blog and... he just wants yr attention.”

Anwar, who is presently abroad in Istanbul with his family, carefully avoided commenting directly to Gobalakrishnan but insisted several times that Surendran was a good choice.

Instead of responding directly to a follower’s message on Gobalakrishnan that read, “...looks like another frog to jump. Whacking party thru tweets?”, Anwar said, “Keadilan to present qualified, credible leaders. Surendran for vp”.

When the same follower asked, “Then why was he selected to represent PKR?”, again in reference to Gobalakrishnan, Anwar replied, “Not as vp. Public expect credible, qualified leader.”

After losing in his vice-presidency bid during the party polls last month, Gobalakrishnan again failed to make the cut when the party leadership appointed Surendran and two others into the post.

Another follower tweeted: “Kredibiliti PKR akan tros dipersoalkan kalau isu2 ini e.g. @Ngobalakrishnan berlarutan” (PKR’s credibility will continue to be questionable if these issues continue) to which Anwar replied, “Naib pres-harus wibawa”.

The party de facto leader’s messages appeared to suggest that the party did not view Gobalakrishnan as more qualified than Surendran, leading to its decision not to appoint the former into the post.

Over the past week, the outspoken Padang Serai MP had launched a series of hard-hitting criticisms against Anwar and PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, lamenting that the duo had sidelined many party loyalists for their self interests.

His grouses with the powerful duo began during the party’s polls last month which he claimed was frought with irregularities and malpractices.

Gobalakrishnan had even threatened to quit the party if the leadership failed to clean up the polls process and call for re-elections.

Today, he told The Malaysian Insider that the Anwar-Azmin team had been cheating the Indian community and even claimed that the community was better off during Barisan Nasional’s reign in Selangor.

In his latest jibes on Twitter, Gobalakrishnan lamented that his pleas for help to Anwar had only fallen on deaf ears.

“I went all the way through the Thick & Thin but only Betrayal by Anwar is the result,” he said.

He also wrote, “many times when I met Anwar regd problems he just told me off or challenged me to join BN” and “I was truly comitted to Anwar last 12 yrs but he only used me and was never sincerely committed to help the POOR”.

Gobalakrishnan also appeared to attack the entire PKR leadership by claiming that the party had failed to address the people’s concerns in its scramble to wrest Putrajaya from BN.

“Only Putra Jaya at any cost. Putra Jaya Putra Jaya Putra Jaya. Poors, Care a damn but sweet talk. 3 yrs people Zero,” he tweeted.

His relentless attacks caused a stir in the Twitter community with many BN leaders using the opportunity to re-tweet his messages.

Gobalakrishnan had earlier also claimed that PKR’s appointment of Surendran as vice-president was unconstitutional as the latter was not a party member.

This was however denied by party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution who announced that the lawyer was indeed a registered member in the Lembah Pantai division.

The Machang MP also told The Malaysian Insider that the party’s political bureau would likely discuss the possibility of reprimanding Gobalakrishnan for his public outburst during its meeting next month.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 27 – PKR confirmed today that its newly-appointed vice-president N. Surendran is a party member despite MP N. Gobalakrishnan’s claim that he was not one.

Party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution told The Malaysian Insider today that he had directed his staff to check with the party’s membership listing and discovered that Surendran (picture) was presently a registered member with the Lembah Pantai division.

“Gobalakrishnan’s accusation is not true. Surendran is a party member,” he said when contacted.

He added that the Padang Serai MP should have consulted him first before going public with his allegations.

“I do not understand why. He could have referred to me and I can check for him. It is just a matter of a click on the mouse and we can trace back the membership list.

“But making a public statement as if he knows the truth... that is inappropriate,” he said.

In a surprising move earlier this month, the party leadership appointed Surendran as a vice-president, along with former MCA president Datuk Chua Jui Meng and Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian.

Gobalakrishnan, who failed in his bid for vice-president during the party’s recent elections, was not selected to fill the post.

He later complained that Surendran’s appointment was unconstitutional as the lawyer was not a party member.

When contacted today, Surendran insisted that he had been a PKR member since 2002.

“I was first listed in the Kepong division but now, after I changed my address, I am under the Lembah Pantai division. I even have a membership number,” he said.

The prominent civil rights lawyer added that Gobalakrishnan’s accusations against him were “baseless” and a “non-issue” as they were untrue.

He also claimed that the party could appoint anyone – even a non-member – as a vice-president.

“I am not bothered by what he said because it is absolutely untrue. So it is totally a point of no basis. I have also told him to cease all his allegations,” he said.

Surendran also questioned if Gobalakrishnan’s latest onslaught of criticisms against the party’s top leadership was the MP’s way of provoking a sacking.

“Perhaps it is true that he is trying to force the party’s hand to take action against him so he wants to do as much damage as he can,” he said.

He added that it was likely that the rebel MP was planning to leave PKR.

“But I think there is no point in being too concerned over his attacks. PKR’s record is clear. We know what we stand for and what we are fighting for and we will continue to do so,” he said.

Surendran added that Gobalakrishnan was merely “ranting” instead of leading an intelligent attack against the party leadership.

“We cannot make much of it because they are more of rants. He is just ranting against our leaders and we are not interested to respond against his rants.

“The public can see that there is no basis... if there is a concrete issue, we will respond. Otherwise, it is pointless,” he said.

Gobalakrishnan recently embarked on a spree to attack PKR’s leaders, especially its de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and deputy president Azmin Ali.

Using microblogging site Twitter as his platform, the outspoken MP continuously accused Anwar of sidelining party loyalists to promote Azmin, said to be his right-hand man in the party.

He however told The Malaysian Insider today that he had no plans to leave PKR but was merely concerned with the party’s direction.

He claimed that both Anwar and Azmin have been “cheating and bluffing the Indians”, adding that the community was treated better by the Barisan Nasional when the ruling coalition helmed Selangor.

Saifuddin said that the party’s political bureau would likely discuss Gobalakrishnan’s attacks during its next political bureau meeting to decide if the leader should be reprimanded.
