Huge turnout at Pakatan rally to hear about Kuan Yew, Dr M, Najib and Altantuya

A multi-racial crowd packed the night-market compound
Dinesweri Puspanadan and Wong Choon Mei, Malaysia Chronicle

UPDATE5 Despite police discouragement, more than a thousand people packed the night market compound in Taman Melati, Wangsamaju to hear a Pakatan Rakyat political lecture led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

They were not disappointed. A star-studded line-up greeted them with speeches that soon had them cheering and clapping. Pakatan leaders such as Tan Tee Kwong, Tian Chua, Khalid Samad,Teresa Kok and Shamsul Iskandar Akin renewed the coalition's pledges of change and reform.

The multi-racial crowd was also clearly eager to hear Pakatan's explanation of the accusation made by Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew against Anwar. They wanted to know why the elder statesman would make such a remark on WikiLeaks and were also keen to hear Anwar talk about former premier Mahathir Mohamad, who has insisted Kuan Yew's facts are right.

Anwar - has not lost his charisma
"Do you think I'm dumb to go into a trap knowing it is a trap? Don't challenge me too much! I will open up the murders - committed and covered up!," Anwar told the crowd, which roared back their support.

"WikiLeaks, do you have technical evidence? If you do, bring Lee Kuan Yew to court. Whether you think I did it or not, that's none of my business. You have any video recording or doctors' notes, produce them at court."

Most of the Pakatan's side of the story has been blacked out in the mainstream media which only carried news that Kuan Yew had told Australian officials that he believed Anwar was framed, but he had also committed sodomy.

Tan Tee Kwong
Anwar has repeatedly denied these charges and his lawyers have earlier today announced he will be suing Mahathir. It is likely Anwar's defense team may try to subpoena Kuan Yew to testify in his Sodomy II trial.

"Lee Kuan Yew is afraid that Singaporeans will seek reformasi as the party in Singapore is the same like Umno which has never changed. We are not afraid, confused, or shocked with this allegation," Tian told the crowd.

But most sought-after were the Najib tidbits

But above all, the crowd appeared most eager to hear the latest tidbits about Prime Minister Najib Razak, who was also criticized by Singapore officials. WikiLeaks had also exposed these comments but the mainstream press had again blacked out this news.

Tian Chua
"If Utusan published about WikiLeaks on sodomy, why did it not publish about Najib's link to the Altantuya murder which was also said by the same Singapore intelligence. We want Singapore to bring the evidence about the sodomy and the murder of Altantuya to court. I want to propose to the Dewan Rakyat to debate on the issue of WikiLeaks - the sodomy and Altantuya murder and expose all the evidence to the public. Dr M responded for sodomy but what about Altantuya's murder and the link to the PM?" asked Tian.

Top Singapore diplomats such as Tommy Koh, Peter Ho and Bilahari Kausikan had in comments to their U.S. counterparts called Najib an "opportunist", saying his involvement in the Altantuya murder was tarnishing Malaysia. They also said Malaysia was on a decline due to "incompetent politicians".

Standing room only - total crowd size of around 2,000
Najib had tried to keep a lid on these explosive comments by asking Malaysians to ignore the Singaporean criticism. But tremendous pressure from Malay groups have forced him to issue a letter of protest to the Singapore High Commission today.

"Now, it's not me who said Najib is involved in the Altantuya murder but WikiLeaks. WikiLeaks is the one who says our prime minister in involved in a murder," said Anwar.

"The Umno media create havoc about sodomy but sideline the Altantutya link to Najib, which was also in WikiLeaks. Najib is now desperate to defend Putrajaya because he is scared the Altantuya murder will finally be fully exposed. I challenge Najib to challenge Singapore to prove his link with the Altantuya murder is false."

Shamsul Iskandar
Dissolve Parliament, hold snap polls

Anwar also told the crowd that if Parliament suspended him for linking Najib's 1Malaysia with APCO, a U.S. based firm with Zionist links, he would tour the country and speak to the people.

Police had earlier set up road blocks nearby to Taman Melati but decided to allow the ceramah to carry on as a permit had already been obtained.

Meanwhile, PKR Youth Chief Shamsul Iskandar Akin challenged Najib to dissolve Parliament and hold snap general elections if he truly believed Malaysians were behind the Umno-BN.

Political academics have been reported as saying BN would still win the next general election. However, they were not sure if it could regain the two-thirds parliamentary majority lost to the Pakatan in 2008. They warned that a Third Force, promoted by several prominent bloggers and whom many Malaysians believe are actually funded by Umno, may further undermine the Pakatan's chances.

Teresa Kok
In her speech, Teresa also lambasted the Selangor Umno for spreading lies about the Pakatan state government.

"The federal government alleged that Selangor was suffering a drop in investment. From January to September, we drew RM6.53 bil, the highest in Malaysia whereas Johor - despite all of BN's Iskandar corridor efforts only pulled in RM3.57 bil," she told the crowd.

She also explained the Selangor administration's need to regain control of the state's water assets including revoking the existing monopoly granted to Umno crony firm SYABAS, which currently has sole rights over water distribution in the state.

"If we don't take over SYABAS, the price of water tariff would increase," warned Teresa.

Dead-end in black eye case

By Syed Jaymal Zahiid

KUALA LUMPUR: Attempts to revive the "black eye" scandal have proven futile, with Putrajaya ignoring the latest allegation that Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail had fabricated evidence.

The disinterest became clear today when Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Abdul Aziz side stepped allegations made by Mat Zain Ibrahim that Abdul Gani had falsified documents and medical reports in the case. Mat Zain made the accusations in two recent open letters.

Mat Zain was the investigating officer in the black eye case, in which Anwar Ibrahim was assaulted in detention following his arrest in 1998. The arrest came after he was sacked from his position as deputy prime minister.

Nazri, in a highly-anticipated ministerial reply, instead addressed a secondary concern raised by Mat Zain, saying the independent panel commissioned to investigate the matter did not have to clear the former officer's name because he was not subject to its investigation.

"The MACC’s (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) advisory board, through its letter to Datuk Mat Zain on July 23, 2009, already stressed that there was no need for the independent panel or the MACC to clear Mat Zain’s name, since he was not the subject of the investigation in the first place,” he said.

The independent panel was formed to assess the outcome of MACC’s probe into the black eye incident. It cleared both Gani and former Inspector General of Police Musa Hassan of any wrongdoing.

Musa was the investigating officer in Anwar's first sodomy case, which he (Anwar) said was trumped up by then premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He was eventually acquitted.

Within the powers of the Solicitor General

Nazri then went on to address Mat Zain’s assertion that the appointment of members to the independent panel, done by the Solicitor General (SG), was unconstitutional.

In his first open letter to Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar, Mat Zain said only the King, with advice from the Prime Minister, had the power to appoint the tribunal. He said the SG’s act of appointing the panel’s members violated subsection 376 (4) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

According to Nazri, Section 376 (2) clearly provides the power to the SG, who in this case acted as the public prosecutor given that Gani had been implicated.

Subsection 376 (2) states: The Solicitor General shall have all powers of a Deputy Public Prosecutor and shall act as Public Prosecutor in case of absence or inability to act of the Attorney General.

Nazri said subsection 376 (2) must be read with subsection 376 (3), which states:

"The public prosecutor may appoint fit and proper persons to be deputy public prosecutors who shall be under the general control and direction of the public prosecutor and may exercise all or any rights and powers vested in or exercisable by the public prosecutor by or under this Code or any written law except any rights or powers expressed to be exercisable by the public prosecutor personally and he may designate any of such deputy public prosecutors as senior deputy public prosecutors."

In his second open letter, Mat Zain blasted Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein for attempting to silence him, citing Hishammuddin’s written reply to Lim Kit Siang (DAP- Ipoh Timur) that the case had been closed and would not be reopened.

This, Mat Zain claimed, signalled the government's intention to protect certain individuals in the scandal.

In July 2008, Anwar filed a police report accusing Abdul Gani, Mat Zain, Musa and a Dr Abdul Rahman Yusof of forging a medical report on the black eye case.

The report claimed that Anwar's injuries were self-inflicted.

PM Najib Razak lets AG Gani Patail off the hook
KUALA LUMPUR — Putrajaya has closed the door for good on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s 1998 “black-eye incident” despite allegations of evidence fabrication against Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail.

In its highly-anticipated explanation to Parliament today, the government clearly side-stepped the damning accusations made by former investigating officer Datuk Mat Zain Ibrahim that Abdul Gani had falsified documents in the case, brushing aside the former’s two recent open letters.

Instead, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz told the House today that there was no need for Mat Zain to complain that the independent panel formed to investigate the evidence fabrication had failed to clear his name in the incident.

This, said Nazri, was because Mat Zain had never been the subject of the panel’s probe and had merely been called forth as a witness to testify.

“The MACC’s (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) advisory board, though its letter to Datuk Mat Zain on July 23, 2009, had already stressed that there was no need for the independent panel or the MACC to clear Mat Zain’s name, seeing as he was not the subject of the investigation in the first place,” he said.

Nazri also said that the panel had been constitutional, despite Mat Zain’s claim that the Solicitor-General had no right to appoint the members.

In his first open letter to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar, Mat Zain had claimed that the right to appoint a tribunal only lay with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, based on the prime minister’s advice.

The A-G, he added, had deceived the Cabinet into believing that the S-G could act in his stead and appoint the members as deputy public prosecutors under the Criminal Procedure Code.

In July 2008, Anwar had filed a police report, accusing Abdul Gani, Mat Zain, Musa and a Dr Abdul Rahman Yusof of falsifying a medical report on his black-eye case, which alleged that his injuries had been self-inflicted.

Three independent panel members comprising Federal and Court of Appeal judges later cleared Abdul Gani and Musa of the allegations, but the status of Mat Zain and Dr Abdul Rahman remained uncertain.

Najib finally sends 'protest' letter to S'pore to stem rising unease

Despite expensive PR, Najib failed to impress foreign leaders
Wong Choon Mei, Malaysia Chronicle

Buckling to tremendous pressure to explain why he was keeping silent over senior Singapore diplomats' comments that he was an "opportunist", among the "incompetent politicians" causing Malaysia's downfall, and that his involvement in the Altantuya murder was tarnishing the country, Prime Minister Najib Razak has finally asked his foreign minister to send a 'protest' letter.

However, the Malaysian premier stopped short of demanding an explanation or an apology in what many pundits believed was a "show" move to silence his critics and "save some face".

"He has to explain to the conservatives and the Youth in Umno why he is being so soft towards the Singaporeans when the insults they have hurled at him were so harsh," PKR vice president Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

"If he doesn't react, then the only explanation which is already on everyone's mind is that he doesn't dare to prolong the negative publicity because who hasn't heard of Altantuya and corruption in the submarines deal. This shows that despite the hundreds of million of taxpayers' money Najib has wasted on public relations, he can't fool people all the time. They can always sniff out a bad leader."

A fatal loss in credibility

After avoiding the press on Sunday, Najib had on Monday night asked Malaysians to ignore the Singaporean comments. In particular, his forgive-and-forget attitude stunned many Umno members, who in the past would have speedily marched to the Singapore High Commission and staged a noisy protest - maybe even burn a few flags.

Malaysia's bad image - the buck stops with Najib
“We can show to our neighbors, that although sometimes they make disparaging remarks about us, that Malaysians can actually achieve,” Najib had said.

However, when his minders realized that such refusal to confront the Singaporeans would be taken as an admission of guilt by his fellow Malaysians, foreign minister Anifah Aman was tasked with sending a letter to the Singapore envoy to express the country's unhappiness.

“I called the High Commissioner to my office this morning, I summoned him to my office, and handed over the letter of protest. I also explained our concern and displeasure towards what was leaked in WikiLeaks,” Anifah was quoted as telling Malaysian Insider.

Malaysian leaders hit the international headlines on Sunday after WikiLeaks passed on the information to several Australian newspapers. Comments by senior Singapore diplomats Tommy Koh, Peter Ho and Bilahari Kausikan to their U.S. counterparts were revealed on the international whistle-blower website.

In their comments, they accused Najib of being an "opportunist", directly referred his involvement in the murder case and that Malaysia was on a "decline" due to "incompetent politicians".

In particular, the remarks sparked immediate speculation as to why the Singaporeans used the term “opportunist”, and was it related to a recent rail-land swap or previous deals where Najib may have attempted to benefit himself.

In the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case, the Malaysian premier was accused of having met the beautiful Mongolian translator at a diamond-show in Singapore, and she had helped his close friend Razak Baginda close a RM6.7 billion ringgit submarines deal that Najib had approved in his then capacity as defense minister.

From that acquisition, Baginda’s firm was awarded a side-deal worth 114 million euros and Altantuya was later found murdered in a jungle clearing in Malaysia in 2006 after harrassing Baginda for her US$500,000 share of the submarines commission allegedly paid by French vendor DCNS.

Two former bodyguards of Najib and his wife Rosmah have been sentenced to hang for her killing, but the key question asked by Malaysians remain unanswered, who ordered the killing?

Jeffrey Kitingan to quit PKR Thursday, say sources

KOTA KINABALU - Former Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice- president Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan is expected to announce his resignation from the party on Thursday, according to sources.

A special press conference has been arranged for Dr Jeffrey to make “a very important” announcement on that day, they said.

The sources said Dr Jeffrey, who is former Bingkor assemblyman and younger brother of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) President Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, might also announce the setting up of a movement to continue his political career in anticipation of a snap general election next year.

“Dr Jeffrey is not quitting politics ... instead he is upgrading his political struggle,” the sources told Bernama.

The sources declined to say whether the movement was linked to the formation of a third political block in the country which is said to be headed by former PKR stalwart Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.

Political pundits see Dr Jeffrey’s imminent resignation as a major blow to PKR’s attempt to strengthen itself in Sabah, dubbed as “the fixed deposit” for the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN). — Bernama

~~~~~~
KOTA KINABALU: Phone lines in Sabah are burning up with speculations that Sabah PKR strongman, Jeffrey Kitingan, will be quitting the party.
Party insiders are expecting the former PKR vice-president to announce his departure from the beleaguered party on Thursday, the day he returns from his two-month vacation from politics.
Jeffrey is scheduled to hold a press conference the same day at a restaurant in Penampang.
Jeffrey's aide, Philip Among, said his boss was holding the press conference "to explain his political destiny and the future of his struggle".
"He will also announce the setting up of a movement," Among added.
Among, who quit PKR weeks ago, is facilitating Thursday's press conference at the restaurant which was booked for the function. Scores of Jeffrey's ardent supporters are expected to show up.
Weeks of speculation that Jeffrey would follow in the footsteps of Zaid Ibrahim, who quit PKR not so long ago, culminated in a burst of text messages saying that he would leave on Thursday.
Jeffrey, when approached, remained tight-lipped. Both his lieutenants Danial John Jambun and Mozes Michael Iking, who were suspended from PKR for their involvement in the aborted attempt to register a PKR-breakaway party last year, also refused to talk on Jeffrey's move.
Rumour has it that Jeffrey may lead a political party and work with a Sarawak-based party and AKIM, the peninsular-based party to be headed by Zaid.
Jeffrey's disenchantment with PKR stemmed from, among others, the party's failure to leave Sabah leadership issues to Sabahans, lack of commitment from the PKR leaders to the 20-point Malaysia Agreement and Borneonisation.
Jeffrey has been politically rootless since the ouster of the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) government led by his elder brother Joseph Pairin Kitingan in 1994 by the current Umno-led Barisan Nasional coalition government.
He joined and left in quick succession several newly-formed political parties following the fall of PBS.
PKR calls for review of flying doctor service
By Joseph Tawie
KUCHING: Sarawak PKR has called for a full review and renaming of the Flying Doctor Service (FDS) in Sarawak.
Its health bureau chief Dr Francis Ngu said the FDS should be renamed as Flying Medical Services (FMS) providing paramedical staff and community nurses instead of doctors.
"We would achieve the same or comparable public health outcomes with paramedical staff as with the current doctors. Currently the FDS is highly expensive for both logistics and personnel," he said.
Ngu said that while the FDS should not be restricted to one or two sorties per day, it must however improve ground personnel through village health promoters, facilities and equipment rather than focus on improving service delivery.
“Should there not be health promotion talks, demonstrations instead of just ‘pills-for all’ services?”
“Should there not be rural health promoters at all locations, to provide continuous synergism to the service of the FDS/FMS staff?” he asked.
Ngu was responding to Chief Minister Taib Mahmud's call on Saturday urging the federal and state governments to map out a more “realistic” plan in view of the scattered population in the state.
He reminded the governments that Sarawakians were spread out in 6,000 settlements, out which 60 percent consisted of fewer than 50 families.
“As long as the population was not concentrated and without easy transport, more efforts must be placed on the flying doctor service,” Taib had said.
Commenting on Taib's statement, Ngu suggested that where small plane landing airstrips are made available, for instance at Bario, Ba’Kelalan and Long Seridan, the FDS should be upgraded by using fixed winged aircrafts.
He also proposed that more landing strips be built for fixed winged aircrafts at remote locations, if population concentration justifies.
“Such a service would allow more staff and equipment to be flown example for dental service and eye screening,” Ngu said.
He added, that FDS/FMS would be better served by a full time Flying Medical Services Corps, thereby developing special expertise in rural medicine and dentistry.
“While consolidating and even vastly improving the FDS, the stronger emphasis must be steadily increasing the rural reach by land and riverine transport infrastructure, and establishing static facilities where population numbers justify cost effectiveness,” he said.
Contract irregularities
The FDS was launched in September 1973 as a pilot project to bring modern medicine to people in very remote areas of Sarawak.
Among its aims were to medically treat people in remote areas and help them improve their health status so that they would be economically productive.
It was also to narrow down the disparity in the provision of Medical and Health Services between urban and rural and remote interiors which are not easily accessible by normal means of communications.
In addition the government also hoped to make its presence felt in these remote locations which otherwise could easily fall prey to the influence of the insurgents.
Following the initial success of the white-coated doctor's visit to the longhouses which had never seen such personnel before, the government decided to have the FDS as a permanent service.
However recently FDS has been seeing a series of setbacks.
“The FDS is an expensive service which was put in place as much for political expediency of government rural reach in the 1970s, as for focused service provision," said Ngu.
"It was meant to be a stop-gap measure till the development of transport infrastructure, whence static service will replace the FDS.
"In recent years, there have been widespread service disruptions, leading to much dissatisfaction from rural communities concerned.
“Much of this failure has been traced by an opposition legislators to contract irregularities, involving political cronies,” he added.
Khir Toyo - WikiLeaks are mere diplomatic gossips not to be taken seriously....
Recently-leaked US diplomatic cables which referred to several Malaysia personalities should not be regarded as facts, said former Selangor menteri besar Dr Khir Toyo.
Referring to the cable on Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy trial provided by whistleblower website WikiLeaks to the Sydney Morning Herald, Khir added that such information should be regarded as diplomatic gossip.
What was recorded in the relevant diplomatic notes were discussions and gossip that has been common in Malaysia for years. It was merely raised again by Singaporean leaders to diplomats from other countries and it became a classified diplomatic document for the United States. This does not mean that it is true, let alone factual, said Khir in a posting on his blog today.
He explained that diplomatic notes more often recorded the diplomat's perceptions which may not necessarily be true. In the case of Singapore, Khir pointed out that the cables do not provide any evidence to back the claims.
'WikiLeaks might confuse people'
He added that if issues raised by WikiLeaks were used overzealously, it would have a serious effect on the public and some court cases. I fear that there are some people who are confused about WikiLeaks and takes it as facts which will later influence their decisions, he said.
The unfinished Malaysian corruption story
Dr M - you did it for inhabitant interestTunku Abdul Aziz
Malaysia is, ethically speaking, in dire straits. Mahathir founded his administration department upon corruption, lies as well as subterfuge. He lied to the republic about the most schemes which were blatantly dishonest. Worse, they were criminal, such as gambling with the EPF money, your income as well as mine, to dilemma the general tin market as well as after the countrys pot to assume upon the banking market, pitting himself in the latter box opposite George Soros. The nation mislaid billions.
I was celebrated final month by the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association with an call in to broach the International Keynote Address during their 2010 Conference during the Sydney Hilton.
Three hundred corporate lawyers participated in the two-day conference, with the small 400 in attendance the ACLA Awards Dinner. you was invited to perform the similar charge final year by the association, though to my bewail as well as finish shame, you was forced to cancel, during great price to my Australian hosts, my appearance in Melbourne, their 2009 discussion venue.
I found myself the demure studious during the Gleneagles Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, with the serious lung infection. The doctor pumped, yes, pumped sufficient antibiotics in to my body to float the destroyer as well as may be keep the two intrepid submarines happily submerged forever.
It transpired which you had picked up the virus in the Netherlands whilst in attendance an ethics discussion during the Amsterdam Free University. you was really surprised, to contend the least, when you perceived the repeat call in from ACLA really early this year. you asked the organisers, in jest, if they realised which they were taking the risk as the same thing competence happen again.
Overcoming Corruption: A Regional Challenge was the title of ! my addre ss. you positive them which there was really no need to feel endangered about the state of illness of crime in the region.
In Malaysia, in particular, in annoy of the flurry of wake up to put upon display the full duds of anti-corruption paraphernalia, it is all form as well as no substance, as with most things you see in this land of the Morning Glory. If they wanted my honest opinion, you would contend but fear of aroused contradiction which crime in Malaysia was not usually alive as well as well: it was in indecently robust great health. The ultimate TI Corruption Perceptions Index says it all.
I treated them to the comical small version about the afterwards newly appointed President of the World Bank, James Wolfensohn, who during the meeting with senior colleagues, pronounced which something had to be finished to reduce crime in borrowing countries in Asia, Africa as well as South America. He pronounced which most saw the Bank as partial of the complaint of corruption. His advisers told him which he should not ever again discuss crime as this would upset the Banks most clients. The fact which they were all corrupt, as well as kleptomaniacs to the man, did not appear to matter.
The subject was the banned in respectful society. When Wolfensohn, feeling the small prohibited under the collar, asked what he should call it then, he was told, quite unabashedly, to impute to it as the C word. The point of this loyal story is which you have all come the prolonged approach given and, in the impolite arrange of way, so has corruption. Corruption never sleeps.
Malaysia is, ethically speaking, in dire straits. Mahathir founded his administration department upon corruption, lies as well as subterfuge. He lied to the republic about the most schemes which were blatantly dishonest. Worse, they were criminal, such as gambling with the EPF money, your income as well as mine, to dilemma the general tin market as well as after the countrys pot to assume upon the banking market, pitting himself! in the latter box opposite George Soros. The nation mislaid billions.
Mahathir succeeded in planting as well as nurturing the culture of parole as well as disinformation that, even prolonged after he left office, has one after another to flourish. Of course, the man who cut his commercial operation teeth minding the stall during the Pekan Rabu in Alor Setar during the Japanese Occupation can explain all this divided by saying which whatever he did, it was finished in the inhabitant interest. We have listened it all before.
The lawyers represented, as well as advised, most large Australian companies. They knew their stuff, kept themselves abreast of the regions economic, amicable as well as political developments. There was not an horrible lot you could tell them which they did not know already about the appalling standards of public ethics, as well as the pervasive nature of hurtful practices which both define as well as enclose the approach you control the commercial operation exchange both in as well as out of the corridors of power. They had listened about the most agencies which provide ample opportunities for the merger of personal wealth as well as abuse of power.
What vacant them, though, was the inform about the small of the frontline immigration officers stashing divided millions of dollars of cheat money. Corrupt officials do not make the law, as well as this has led to easy entrance in to the nation of drug as well as tellurian traffickers as well as alternative illegals. And the crime has incited Malaysia in to the passage for tellurian trafficking in to Australia. When you supplement to this the crime in the ruling elite, the police, the judiciary, the etiquette as well as alternative pass institutions, you have the entirely ugly design of the nation fuelled as well as driven by ethically reprehensible behaviour.
I warned the Australians which you welcome their investment, though it usually satisfactory to warn them which doing commercial operation in Malaysia required m! ore than the common due diligence since Malaysians were surprisingly adept during branch crime in to the low risk as well as high return commercial operation try for themselves, leaving you holding the baby. The complement tolerates as well as encourages it.
We have, as the nation, been truly sole down the river of no return by Mahathir, who right away continues to set his version of the moral tinge of this country. In what capacity you conjunction know nor caring any more. Flood or pestilence, it is commercial operation as usual. In this country, you privatise as well as politicise everything, including corruption.
A woman in the audience asked if there was anything which could be finished to take Malaysia behind to the pre-Mahathir values. The reduced answer is yes, there is. It is probable by turfing out the present administration department so which the thorough as well as finish review of policies as well as procedures could be put in sight to safeguard relevance, with mechanisms for checks as well as balances resolutely put in place. All institutions will have to justify their life as well as those which are no longer relevant will be sealed down. Institutions which have been rendered dysfunctional will be strengthened. The deadwood as well as the hurtful will be speedy to take early early retirement as well as meritocracy will be the sole pattern used to determine suitability to lead.
I am positively assured which transforming the administration department is not usually desirable, though positively essential if this nation is to succeed in claiming its right to the seat during the tip table, among the purify nations which will shape the destiny of the world. Change, as well as finish change, is the answer. Malaysians contingency decide the kind of destiny they want.
I am anti-national by Najibs ultimate definition since you speak the law in the unfamiliar nation about Malaysias tasteless reputation for massive corruption. you suspect living off crime as most of the leaders do ! with pan ache as well as parole is partial of being the loyal Malaysia.
Singapores Disdain Exposed
Comment
By Mergawati Zulfakar
SINGAPORES most senior Foreign Ministry official Bilahari Kausikan is heading for Kuala Lumpur on December 22 as a leader of a delegation to discuss KTM Berhads land swap deal in Singapore agreed in May by the Prime Ministers of the two countries.
This is the fifth round and possibly the last meeting of the Malaysia-Singapore Joint Implementation Team (MSJIT) between officials of both countries, each side with about 20 people representing various ministries and agencies.
After the last meeting two weeks ago, a short one-paragraph joint statement was issued describing the meeting as one held in a cordial atmosphere. Come December 22, the atmosphere will definitely be awkward, at least to some officials. Simple analogy imagine sitting with someone that you know who has been bad-mouthing you to others. How would you feel?
Now, how about sitting down to a meeting with the very man who claimed, among others, that Malaysia was confused and dangerous, fueled by the distinct possibility of racial conflict?
Not only that, Kausikan said back in September 2008 that a lack of competent leadership is a real problem for Malaysia. Courtesy of WikiLeaks and not exactly denied by his boss, Foreign Minister George Yeo, Kausikans remarks are riling up officials in Putrajaya.
His remarks are crude and smack of arrogance. It is not just what he has said but how he said it. It shows his sentiment for us.Every time there is an MSJIT meeting, the host country will host lunch and dinner. It is going to be an awkward situation for us, said one government official.
Kausikans predecessor Peter Ho has also made damaging remarks on Malaysia, along with the minis! trys Amb assador-at-large Tommy Koh whose views of Japan and India were damaging.
Fat losers, stupid, bad leadership are some adjectives that had been used by Singaporean diplomats to describe their neighbours. Yeo, in an immediate attempt to play down reports, defended his officials, saying their comments were taken out of context and were interpretations of views reflected by American officials.
The comments, which Yeo described as cocktail talk, were confidential and should not have been released. Yeo said his ministry would not check the veracity of the remarks, nor comment on what could have gone on in an informal and confidential setting.
It is normal for diplomats to get information from others during cocktails. What is surprising, though, is that the information gathered from the Singaporeans merit attention from the Americans.
I am sure how it was said by the Singapore diplomats and the sentiment that it merits attention, said an official. For those who have dealt with Singapore, nothing has changed.
The general feeling among officials is that their Singapore counterparts do have condescending traits. WikiLeaks exposs in the past weeks have caused embarrassment to diplomats and government officials around the world.
This week, it is Singapores turn. There are thousands of documents yet to be made public by WikiLeaks and who knows if Malaysia would be next, as we are never short of politicians who may not be able to keep their mouths shut.
As Yeo said, he did not think relations with the countries will be affected.True, but as the closest neighbour with supposedly warm ties, Singapore would do well to show some kind of regret over the remarks made by its officials.
If it had been Singapore at the end of the stick, they would not stop until they get what they want. No doubt, Malaysia will now need to be more alert when dealing with Singapore.
During next weeks meeting, officials will need to remain professional when they meet Kausikan. They have to stic! k to the agenda as there are objectives to be met since the leaders have given officials until end of the year to iron out details of the KTM land swap deal and other related projects.
The days of being emotional are long gone. It is time to think strategically for the long term and best interest of Malaysia.
Letter & Opinion From Joe Public
NCR Defender to be charged in Court tomorrow
HU Editor
Numpang Anak Suntai (picture right) will be charged in the Magistrate Court in Serian tomorrow morning, allegedly for criminal intimidation.
Last month, Numpang together with 290 other representatives of the 15 Iban communities from Sebangan, Simunjan, Sarawak had filed a suit against Quality Concrete Sdn Bhd, a logging company substantially owned by Sarawak Chief Ministers sister Roziah @ Raziah Mahmud, for trespassing and encroachment into their native customary rights land.
Family members, friends and relatives of the gentle-speaking Numpang are expected to crowd the Serian District Office premises to show their support for him and the on-going battles to defend native customary land rights in Sarawak.
It Would Have Been A Sin for PKR To Have Allowed Jenapa to Contest
UMNO/BN stooges like Jenapala and Salehudddin Hashim is going to town accusing PKR Secretary General of forging the sacking letter. People like Haris Ibrahim and Raja Petra without hesitation lend their support to Salehuddin's accusation while completely dismissing Saifuddin Nasution's explanation.
Saifuddin repeatedly says that the sacking letter was found in the files left behind by Salehuddin Hashim.
Salehuddin on the other hand is a turn-coat and a traitor to the cause of PKR and the cause of reform in Malaysia. He engineered several cross-overs which might have led to BN restoring the 2/3 majority.
Haris, Johnson Chong and Raja Petra chooses to believe in Salehuddin more than Saifuddin. I wonder WHAT IS THE BASIS of their support to Salehuddin Hashim?
Another angle that we can consider. Saifuddin is accused of forging the sacking letter or Jenapala.
My question is: WHAT THE HELL FOR?
At the point when Jenapala declared his interest to contest for Timbalan Presiden, Saifuddin already ALL EVIDENCE and AUTHORITY to sack Jenapala on his own accord.
Why does Saifuddin needs to forge a new letter? He can issue a new letter sacking Jenapala.
People like Johnson Chong tries to GIVE SUPPORT the agenda of Salehuddin Hashim by saying he has never seen the letter before. Well, if Johnson Chong has never seen the letter it sure doesn't mean that the letter doesn't exist.
And, people like Haris Ibrahim openly give creadence to turncoats like Salehuddin Hashim. I mean, between Saifuddin and Salehuddin, any idiot on the street can tell which one has more credibility. For anyone to take SAlehuddin's word over Saifuddin, he is either a staunch UMNO supporter or a nut case.
Hence the reason for Johnson Chong lending his open support to Salehuddin's affidavit. From the very first day I met Johnson, i already know the guy is a nut case. I bet my late uncle would be very very sad seeing what this Johnson guy is doing.
Anyways, isn't it we! ird Hari s Ibrahim openly attacks Anwar because Anwar refuse to appoint Jeffery Kittigan as Sabah PKR Head? He loves Jeffery so much he is willing to throw his support behind Salehuddin's accusation of forgery.
At the end of the day, the stuggle of the "Third Force" is nothing more than personality worship of people like Jeffery Kittigan, Salehuddin Hashim, Zaid Ibrahim, Jenapala and many more. Anwar Ibrahim refusal to support dubious and doubtful characters into the party has resulted in Haris and Raja Petra forming a new movement to rival PKR.
I wonder how Malik Imtiaz Salwar will fare in seats like Dungun Parliamentary Seat or Tahan State Assembly seat in Pahang. I wonder if kampong folks will appreciate a candidate like Malik Imtiaz Salwar.
I pray that God will help Anwar Ibrahim in cleaning these negative elements from the party. I commend Anwar Ibrahim for protecting the party from opportunists like Jeffery Kittigan, Zaid Ibrahim, Haris Ibrahim, Jenapala, Johnson Chong and many more.
Thank you.
The unfinished Malaysian corruption story
Dr M - you did it all in inhabitant interestTunku Abdul Aziz
Malaysia is, ethically speaking, in apocalyptic straits. Mahathir founded his administration department department upon corruption, lies as well as subterfuge. He lied to the republic about the most schemes which were blatantly dishonest. Worse, they were criminal, such as gambling with the EPF money, your income as well as mine, to dilemma the general tin marketplace as well as after the countrys pot to speculate upon the currency market, pitting himself in the latter case opposite George Soros. The nation mislaid billions.
I was celebrated last month by the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association with an call in to deliver the International Keynote Address during their 2010 Conference during the Sydney Hilton.
Three hundred corporate lawyers participated in the two-day conference, with some 400 in attendance the ACLA Awards Dinner. you was invited to perform the similar charge last year by the association, yet to my regret as well as utter shame, you was forced to cancel, during good price to my Australian hosts, my coming in Melbourne, their 2009 discussion venue.
I found myself the reluctant studious during the Gleneagles Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, with the serious lung infection. The alloy pumped, yes, pumped enough antibiotics in to my body to boyant the destroyer as well as may be keep the dual intrepid submarines happily submerged forever.
It transpired which you had picked up the pathogen in the Netherlands while in attendance an ethics discussion during the Amsterdam Free University. you was unequivocally surprised, to say the least, when you perceived the repeat call in from ACLA unequivocally early this year. you asked the organisers, in jest, if they realised which they were taking the risk as the same thing competence happen again.
Overcoming Corruption: A Regional! Challen ge was the pretension of my address. you positive them which there was unequivocally no need to feel endangered about the state of health of crime in the region.
In Malaysia, in particular, in spite of the flurry of activity to put upon display the full duds of anti-corruption paraphernalia, it is all form as well as no substance, as with most things you see in this land of the Morning Glory. If they longed for my honest opinion, you would say without fear of aroused counterbalance which crime in Malaysia was not usually alive as well as well: it was in indecently robust good health. The ultimate TI Corruption Perceptions Index says it all.
I treated them to the comical small anecdote about the afterwards newly appointed President of the World Bank, James Wolfensohn, who during the meeting with comparison colleagues, pronounced which something had to be finished to reduce crime in borrowing countries in Asia, Africa as well as South America. He pronounced which most saw the Bank as partial of the complaint of corruption. His advisers told him which he should not ever again mention crime as this would upset the Banks most clients. The fact which they were all corrupt, as well as kleptomaniacs to the man, did not appear to matter.
The theme was the taboo in respectful society. When Wolfensohn, feeling the small hot under the collar, asked what he should call it then, he was told, quite unabashedly, to impute to it as the C word. The indicate of this loyal story is which you have all come the prolonged approach since and, in the impolite sort of way, so has corruption. Corruption never sleeps.
Malaysia is, ethically speaking, in apocalyptic straits. Mahathir founded his administration department department upon corruption, lies as well as subterfuge. He lied to the republic about the most schemes which were blatantly dishonest. Worse, they were criminal, such as gambling with the EPF money, your income as well as mine, to dilemma the general tin marketplace as well as after the c! ountrys pot to speculate upon the currency market, pitting himself in the latter case opposite George Soros. The nation mislaid billions.
When you supplement to this the crime in the statute elite, the police, the judiciary, the etiquette as well as other key institutions, you have the entirely ugly picture of the nation fuelled as well as driven by ethically reprehensible behaviour.
I warned the Australians which you acquire their investment, yet it usually satisfactory to advis! e them w hich doing commercial operation in Malaysia required some-more than the common due industry since Malaysians were surprisingly adept during turning crime in to the low risk as well as tall lapse commercial operation venture for themselves, leaving you land the baby. In what genius you conjunction know nor care any more. Flood or pestilence, it is commercial operation as usual. In this country, you privatise as well as politicise everything, together with corruption.
A woman in the audience asked if there was anything which could be finished to take Malaysia back to the pre-Mahathir values. The short answer is yes, there is. Crocodile Tears!
Sarawak Report
Fake concern?
Chief Minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud, has been attempting to use the Borneo Post in increasingly desperate attempts to rescue his reputation over Pulau Bruit. The fact that there has been a recent stream of announcements showing his sudden new concern for the poor islanders is a sure sign that the revelations that he and his family have stolen millions of ringgits of their land without compensation are causing him trouble!
How stupid do they think people are?
All Taibs sudden expressions of concerns came after we exposed him last week for stealing most of the land of Pulau Bruit and handing it to companies owned by himself and his family. We showed how his brothers made RM 40 million in 12 days by re-selling Native Customary Lands on the island, which Taib has organised for the government to sell to them for well below market price. We later showed that he had removed the rest of the available land and given it to a company Delta Padi, in which he owns shares himself along with other members of his family!
So now, according to the Borneo Post he has come rushing to the Island to make amends! The paper says that the Chief Minister Apparently appalled by the depressing conditions in Pulau Bruit, has called for for immediate actions to be taken to improve health facilities for the people there. What cheek given that he more than anyone is the cause of their problems!
The government-controlled newspaper labours on trying to repair the damage for the Chief Minister, but only makes it worse with laughable att! empts to portray the greedy old man as being caring and generous towards the islanders. It reports that the Chief Minister made a dash to visit the area after the news broke about his thefts and found the people were mostly suffering from malnutrition and there were cases of high blood pressure even among the younger generation due to improper food intake and frequent consumption of salted fish
The Chief Minister has decided to blame the monsoon season for these problems, but the rest of Sarawak knows that the blame lies with himself, since he took these peoples forests and polluted their fishing areas through logging and palm plantations without providing compensation. Just a little of the RM40 million taken by Taibs brothers could have made all the difference to these peoples lives. He could even now provide them with some money now to be more comfortable, but forget it. He needs the people to be poor so that they stay desperate and intimidated and agree to vote for him in return for RM 20 ringgit (or so he hopes).
Vague promises about solving an emergency situation
Emergency Situation why did the Chief Minister who took the land need us to point it out?
The Post says that the Chief Minister admitted that the predicament of the people of Pulau Bruit is an emergency situation. However, instead of offering immediate financial help the old man in his usual way prefers to rely on vague talk of better times in the future (once he has completed his grand projects in Tanjung Manis, by which he hopes to enrich himself further by cutting down the rest of the mangrove areas and making factories). And, rather than providing immediate sources of better food and fresh water, he offers wooly ideas about calling for the provision of better health facilities. He is laughably quoted! as sayi ng:
If possible, I would like to appeal to the medical services in Sarawak to start something for the people there
If possible?! Taib Mahmud has the power to take any land he likes and give it to himself, which is what he has done in Pulau Bruit. So why does he act as if he has to politely request for someone in the medical services to possibly do something to make life better in Pulau Bruit! If the people of Pulau Bruit are suffering from malnutrition then this needs a better response than such a woolly request.
Time to call in the UN?
A proper and caring government would be taking emergency action to meet an emergency situation. Why does Taib not use some of his Hornbill jets that everyone knows he keeps for his own use to do some good and fly in proper foodstuffs? That would address the malnutrition that he has personally caused. Or will the State of Sarawak, Malaysia, one of the richest countries in the world in terms of resources, be forced to call in the UN to help its people, because the Chief Minister refuses to spend money on anyone but himself and his family?
We predict that the Chief Minister will be making many more pronouncements in the coming days and weeks before the election showing his concern for Pulau Bruit, which he admits has up till now escaped our radar. There will be talk of hundreds of millions in projects for a start, but surely no one would be fooled into thinking the benefits of such money will go to the small population of the island. Just one million handed directly to their needs would go a long way to relieving their situation, but Taib would prefer grand projects which he can put through his family companies!
But, we at Sarawak Report will be happy to take the ! credit f or whatever does now come to the people in Pulau Buit. This is because the Chief Minister, who managed to take their land but failed at the same time to notice their poverty until we pointed it out, seems to have woken up to the danger of mistreating his people in this way, now that we have brought it to public attention!
Abdul Karim, Taib and life in the Big Top
Pak Bui
Abdul Karim Hamzah, State Assembly representative for Asajaya, and chief political secretary to Sarawaks Chief Termite Taib Mahmud, has made a sorry spectacle, clowning around to please his boss. Voice recoding here
Abdul Karim has endured punishing criticism (and even more fearsome, derisive laughter) from all over the country, thanks to his ill-advised comments in a recent interview with Sarawak Free Radio.
Taib, the Ringmaster in Sarawaks propaganda circus, seems to need his retinue of clowns with slow wits and flat feet to speak up for him. The Ringmaster himself has not dared to produce the slightest peep over the devastating, carefully documented revelations of his property empire worldwide, and his land deals in Sarawak, in Sarawak Report and all over the worldwide web.
Laughing off the reports
His chief political clown Abdul Karim attempted gamely to defend his Ringmaster, by tooting his horn and giggling. When he said Taib had not sued Sarawak Report for libel because I mean, to take up an action is not as simple as it is (sic)sometimes its better to just leave things as it (sic) is, because it will, after a while, quiet down (laughs).
He seemed to find it funny when he championed a White Paper obviously aimed at silencing political opponents, ranging from Sarawak Report, to Pakatan Rakyat leaders like Anwar Ibrahim, Sivarasiah Rahsia and Lim Kit Siang, to the new radio broadcasting station Radio Free Sarawak to blogs like Hornbill Unleashed, Broken Shield and Dayak Nation.
If we feel that they are not desirable to us, if they are known to bewho have been! running us down, from their writing, from their blogs, I think if they are not a friend to Sarawak, I would say, then we stop them (laughs).
Indeed, if reports from insiders are accurate, Taib is planning to clamp down on Hornbill Unleashed, perhaps by legal action. He must be hoping his team of cracked sharpshooters can bring down the hornbill and bury it, never mind about the leash.
But his marksmen might be shooting their boss in the foot, since this would draw even greater worldwide attention to his plummeting reputation, just as the Clown Prince Abdul Karim has.
Life in the Big Top
The Clown Prince Abdul Karim seems to be living in an alternative universe. In his circus world, those revealing shady land deals in an effort to cut down on corrupt practices, and provide more state money for poor people, is not desirable. In his world, these people are not a friend to Sarawak.
Taib, on the other hand, appears to be desirable and friendly to Sarawak, though he has scrabbled together a vast fortune for himself, for example by acquiring land cheaply, as Abdul Karim puts it.
Do political secretaries understand the basics?
This chief political secretary and state assemblyperson, and indeed the chairman of the Barisan Nasional backbenchers club, might be expected to understand the basics.
Sarawaks government is not Sarawak. The government is merely a group of ordinary people voted in to administer Sarawak and use its resources for the benefit of Sarawaks citizens, and not for themselves.
All elected representatives, even the Chief Termite, serve the people and the state (as outlined in the oath of office they swear), and not the other way around. If they indulge in private, personal wealth accumulation at the expense of the poor people of Sarawak, they are by definition the ene! mies of the people and of the state.
This is simple and universal political theory, but it appears to be beyond the grasp of the poor clown with the smile painted on his face. If he had any self-respect left, he would surely resign.
Abdul Karims pathetic defence of his master getting cheap land (for example) was greeted with contempt; unfortunately, although Abdul Karim claims he reads Malaysiakini and Free Malaysia Today, he may not be able to understand sarcasm. His use of English is not his strong suit; slapstick is more his style of communication.
He may even think the Facebook likes given to reports of his Radio Free Sarawak interview may be likes of him.
There are reams of publicly documented evidence of Taib and his family, featuring a smiling procession of his late wife, brothers, sister, children, brother-in-law Abdul Aziz Hussein, and cousin Hamid Sepawi, obtaining contracts from the state government.
Such beneficiaries of Sarawaks taxpayers hard-earned money include CMS, Naim Holdings, Sarawak Energy, Titanium, Mesti Bersatu, Quality Concrete and numerous other family companies. These contracts were under the responsibility of Taib himself, as finance minister and minister for natural resources and planning.
There are tonnes of detailed descriptions of the timber concession holdings given by Taib, as minister for natural resources and planning, and lurid records of generous gifts to Taibs family by cronies such as Samling.
And there is an intricately traced paper trail showing the lucrative land acquisitions by companies owned by Taibs family. They have had vast tracts of cheap or free land alienated to them and have then been able to sell them on for immense profit.
Abdul Karim has succeeded only in highlighting his Ringmasters stinking wealth, and foul conflict of interest and instant riches from acquisition of land titles. Abdul Karim must now be one of Pakatan Rakyats newest assets in Sarawak.
Perhaps Abdul Karim should be exiled from Sarawak u! nder his own White Paper, since he himself has blatantly tried to run down the government, tried to create instability, whether economically or politically, in the state, as he accused Taibs critics in his interview!
Nik Aziz: Separate state polls may backfire
Nik Aziz
KOTA BHARU - Pakatan Rakyat-ruled states have been urged to first carry out a study before deciding whether or not to call for state elections on a different date than the parliamentary elections.
According to PAS Murshidul Am Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, it was immaterial whether the proposal could be put to practice, saying the repercussion on the state governments for having separate elections from the general election must be examined.
Nik Aziz was responding to a statement by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim who hinted that PR state governments could choose call state elections on a date other than the day of general election which will be decided by BN as the Federal government.
Anwar had said that the power to dissolve the state assembly belonged exclusively to the respective state governments.
Nik Aziz, who is also the Kelantan Menteri Besar, however cautioned that having separate state elections would make things easier for the BN and UMNO machinery to train its gun on these states.
"I think the proposal should be reviewed before it is implemented," he said.
Since the idea for separate polls was mooted by Kelantan Exco member Husam Musa earlier this year, there have been both supporters and opponents to the plan among the PR leaders and supporters.
One PR supporter highlighted legal conundrums in the four respective state constitutions on dissolving their respective state assemblies.
“Kedah silent on Menteri Besar’s discretion [Article 53 Clause (2)]. Kelantan similar Article 46 Clause (2). Selangor worse - even silent on whether Sultan can dissolve without MB's permission [Article 55, Clause (2) (b)]. Penang - Yang Di-Pertua can withhold consent [Clause 8 Article (2) (b).
"And last but not least if it goes to court for some reason, let us not forget, if state and federal are in conflict, Federal prevails, Article 75 of Federal constitution, bad idea in my opinion,” warned Vijay Kumar Murugavell in a posting on social network Facebook.
How to spoil Najib's surprise
Husam
In June, Kelantan Exco Husam Musa had suggested that Pakatan Rakyat state governments respond to the prime minister's hinting of a 'surprise' general election by announcing their respective state elections earlier.
“What if the four Pakatan states move to set the date for state election earlier?" wrote Husam in a blog posting.
Husam said the states need to decide on a date for state election before Najib announces that parliament is dissolved.
Explaining further, Husam said that there was a good chance that state elections would be held separately from the general election if Najib decide on a different date.
“This means the state election in four states will be different from the date of parliamentary elections if Najib chooses a different date than the date we have announced,” he added.
Turning the tables on BN
Husam said by doing so, the Barisan Nasional government would be forced to decide and announce an election date which either coincided with PR's state election date, or set for an earlier date as PR has been hoping for.
Husam also said the move would eliminate the element of “surprise” in the holding of general election, which could catch PR off-guard.
Earlier, prime minister Najib Razak was quoted as saying that the date of the next general election would be a “surprise to all” in response to a suggestion by former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad that he should hold elections now due to his improved ratings.
Husam however said there was a possibility that the BN would continue the old way, in which case the parliamentary election will be on a different date than the state elections in the PR-held states.
“This suggestion is a democratic act to break the monopoly to determine the election date by the ruling party and to ensure fair play to all parties,” he claimed.
According to him, the date for state election can be predetermined, such as using the year tenure as the determiner.
“If we decide the tenure is five years, then the four Pakatan state assemblies will be dissolved in early 2013. If we set for four years then we will dissolve the state assembly in early 2012.
“Let us tell Najib that he is not the only one who can spring surprises."
Bamboo money containers may help prevent defections : PAS
PAS vice president Tuan Ibrahim
TEMERLOH - PAS members and leaders have been urged to prepare a ‘bamboo money container’ each as a preparation to face the looming 13th general election, which is widely expected to be held in the first quarter of next year.
The party's vice president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said this would not only equip PAS financially but also ensure potential candidates stay loyal to the party.
“The bamboo money container should be handed over by PAS members to the PAS candidate who is contesting with a message, so that the candidate will be reminded that they are elected due to members’ hard work.
Symbolically, the money container will be presented to the candidate on the day he is appointed as the candidate,” he said.
Tuan Ibrahim said the idea dawned on him during a recent visit to Johor, where PAS members were presenting their bamboo money containers to the area's ballot box unit (Unit Peti Undi).
Making a slight modification, Tuan Ibrahim suggested that instead of giving to UPU, people should give to one who is contesting and "write our messages on the container to him”.
He believed the proposal would spiritually prevent elected leaders from betraying the party as they would be constantly reminded that their victory was due to the hard work of all members and supporters.
“I am sure everyone has spare change... Instead of burdening our pockets, it is better we put the money into the bamboo money container,” he said.
Taib's Sarawak to destroy 1 million hectares of tropical forests
KUCHING - The Sarawak government intends to convert one million hectares of land into oil palm plantations within the next ten years. Most of this land is currently covered by secondary rainforests, yet it also includes fruit and rubber gardens as well as hitherto untouched primary rainforests, including peatland swamp forests.
According to Sarawak's Land Development Minister, James Masing, the government needed to look into a more aggressive conversion of native lands into oil palm plantations. He said that the state government intended to double its oil palm plantation area from the current 920,000 hectares to 2 million hectares by 2020, and stated that his ministry had requested funds from the Malaysian federal government for this purpose. The announcement was made in an interview with The Star, Malaysia's largest English-language newspaper.
Masing's announcement comes as a shock to human rights and environmental campaigners who are increasingly concerned about the ruthless alienation of native lands and the rapid degradation of Sarawak's rainforests, one of the most biodiverse habitats in the world. Last year, Malaysia's indigenous organizations called for a moratorium on the development of new plantations due to the blatant disregard of native rights by the state authorities.
Sarawak's failure to enforce its forest legislation policies and its unlawful handling of the native rights issue have recently caused the European Union to stall timber trade talks with Malaysia over a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA).
While the state's logging policies have been controversial for more than two decades, the root cause seems to be the massive corruption under Sarawak s Chief Minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud, who has been in power since 1981. Taib has recently come under fire over land deals attributed to his family members and a large number of overseas properties belonging to his family, whose wealth is of unaccounted origin.
