Sarawak CM defends record against Chinese

Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud disclosed today that he met Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) president George Chan on Thursday and had an exchange of opinion with him.

Taib said the meeting went well and that Chan had told him that SUPP would not leave the Barisan Nasional (BN).

We had an exchange of opinion, details of which I wouldnt want to reveal. I had given him my perspective of how the Chinese perceive problems and how we can bring them to work with other races, he told reporters here.

Taib said he had also urged Chan to find new ways to engage the Chinese community and to explain to them the governments ideas and aspirations.

If they dont understand these ideas, they cannot participate in the development and they will be left behind, he said.

Taib said he had striven to help the Chinese community in the state.

I have helped the Chinese in general ways. Dont tell me that the Chinese have not benefited from our general prosperity, he said.

Meanwhile, Chan said Taib was supportive on many issues affecting the Chinese, including the need to assist Chinese schools and on the land premium rebate issue.

With the strong support from the Chief Minister, and the Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, we hope that the state election will be easier for SUPP, he said.

SUPPs position in the state BN became the subject of speculation after several grassroots members said that there would be no purpose for the party to remain in the Sarawak BN if issues facing the Chinese community remained unresolved.

The ex-Land and Co-operative Development Minister, Tan Sri Kasitah Gaddam, has a tape-recording of the AG extorting money from him. Yes, that’s right, the AG demanded money from Kasitah Gaddam or else he was going to charge him for corruption.

Home ministry’s appeal on RPK release postponed

(Bernama) — The Federal Court today adjourned the hearing of an appeal by the Home Ministry against the High Court’s decision to release blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin from two-year detention under the Internal Security Act (ISA) to a date to be fixed.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Tun Abdul Majid Tun Hamzah informed the panel led by Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Arifin Zakaria, that the prosecution had not served the notice of appeal on Raja Petra, the reason for his absence today.

Justice Arifin who sat with Federal Court justices Datuk Hashim Yusof and Tan Sri James Foong Cheng Yuen granted the prosecution’s application to adjourn the appeal, as they had not served the notice on Raja Petra, who is the editor of the web portal Malaysia Today.

When asked by Justice Hashim on the chances of serving the notice on Raja Petra, Tun Majid replied: “Raja Petra’s address is still unknown.”

Raja Petra’s counsel Malik Imtiaz Sarwar told the court that the appeal had become academic because the minister’s order to detain him for two years had already expired.

“The matter is academic but it’s nothing to stop the minister to issue a new order as it’s already two years,” he said.

Tun Majid replied that the minister’s order would become academic after Sept 21, 2010.

Speaking to reporters later, Tun Majid said the prosecution did not know Raja Petra’s whereabouts as his right address was not known to the prosecution. On Nov 7, 2008, the Shah Alam High Court ordered the release of Raja Petra from ISA detention after ruling that his two-year detention at the Kamunting detention camp in Taiping was unlawful.

Raja Petra was arrested on Sept 12, 2008 as he was deemed a threat to national security and the order to detain him under the ISA was issued on Sept 22, 2008.

Raja Petra was detained on the grounds that he, among others, owned and operated the Malaysia Today website and had intentionally and recklessly published his articles and also readers’ comments on Malaysia Today that were critical of and insulted Muslims, the purity of Islam and the personality of Prophet Muhammad.

In filing the habeas corpus application, Raja Petra had named the Home Minister as the respondent.

***********************************************

The Umno people are asking me to come home to ‘face the music’. Basically they are talking about my allegation against the wife of the Prime Minister, Rosmah Mansor. They call me a fugitive from the law and accuse me of not being brave enough to be accountable for my actions by coming home to face trial, and so on.

As I said before, either they are ignorant or they are intentionally trying to mislead the public. I have already written about this issue at length more than once so allow me to just go through the summary of the whole issue.

First of all, the two criminal charges against me have been dropped. I have been discharged not amounting to an acquittal. So what charges are they talking about? There are no charges against me and neither is there a warrant of arrest pending. So how can I be a fugitive from the law?

That is the first point.

What I have stressed over and over again is the fact that they are still trying to get me under detention without trial — the Internal Security Act. In short, they are trying to get me through the ‘back door’. That is my bone of contention.

Now, there are two things wrong here.

First is that my detention without trial is for the same ‘crime’ as the charges I had faced, and now dropped. This means I am being punished twice for the same crime, which is wrong in law. You can’t be punished twice for the same crime. I have said this before.

Second is that the Shah Alam High Court has already ruled my detention as unlawful. The government, however, is not happy with that. Around the same time that the government announced it would not be appealing against the Razak Baginda acquittal it announced it would be appealing against the high court’s decision to release me.

Is not murder a more serious crime than writing an article not favourable to the government? Why announce that they would not appeal against Razak Baginda’s acquittal for murder and at the same time announce that they would appeal the release of someone freed from illegal detention without trial?

Okay, so they want to appeal the high court’s decision to release me. Well and fine. They in fact already filed the appeal in early 2009. Then, after almost two years of inactivity, they suddenly pursue the appeal.

Why after almost two years of silence do they suddenly wake up? Is it because the detention order against me is expiring soon — in about three weeks to be exact? Are they trying to ride on the old detention order so that they can roll over the detention order another two years? This would avoid them having to issue a new detention order.

I call this mala fide, which means bad faith in layman’s language.

Yesterday, the Federal Court was supposed to hear the appeal. But without any warning the government asked the court to postpone the hearing. My lawyers were ready to proceed and I had already told them to fight this case till the end. Why do they not want to proceed with the hearing? Why ask the court to postpone it indefinitely?

The excuse the government is giving is they do not know my address so they can’t serve any papers on me.

That is utter bullshit. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad knows my address. I have given it to him. Tan Sri Sanusi Junid also knows my address. He has come to my house for dinner. In fact, we met twice. And Sanusi has not hidden this fact. He has told others about it who in turn phoned me to tell me that they found out from Sanusi that he came to my house for dinner.

It is therefore no secret.

When I was in Kamunting back in September-November 2008 they served papers on my lawyers. They know who my lawyers are so why can’t they serve whatever papers they want to serve on my lawyers? They have done this before. Why can’t they do it again? My lawyers are authorised to receive papers on my behalf. Serving the papers on my lawyers is as good as serving them on me.

Anyway, yesterday’s appeal hearing is a continuation of the hearing of February 2009. This is not a new hearing. It is a continuation. And this means the papers have already been served back in 2009. So what new papers are they talking about?

More importantly, I do not need to be in court for the hearing. I am not under arrest or out on bail. This is detention without trial, not a criminal charge. So I do not need to be in court. Why can’t they proceed with the hearing even though, as they said, I am not in court?

Do you remember the case of the Hindraf 5? They were also not in court. Yet the court heard their appeal in their absence. In fact, the Hindraf 5 asked the court for permission to appear in court but the court rejected their application. The court ruled that they do not need to be in court.

So there you are. The Umno chaps talk about the allegation against Rosmah Mansor. I am telling them it is not about that. It is about the government still trying to detain me without trial. And yesterday the government just proved me right.

Over to you Umno. What do you have to say now?

Aiyah, the Attorney General is so full of shit. He treats Malaysians as if they are country bumpkins. Okay, his DPPs are stupid, as the Teoh Beng Hock murder inquiry has proven. But that does not mean the rest of us are also stupid.

Hey, maybe the AG would like to response to this allegation.

The ex-Land and Co-operative Development Minister, Tan Sri Kasitah Gaddam, has a tape-recording of the AG extorting money from him. Yes, that’s right, the AG demanded money from Kasitah Gaddam or else he was going to charge him for corruption.

Kasitah Gaddam then went to meet the Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and played the tape for the PM to hear. But the Prime Minister did nothing. And Kasitah Gaddam refused to pay the money that the AG demanded. So the AG charged him for corruption. Read more here: http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2004/2/13/nation/7307934&sec=nation

Does Umno want to talk about this? A comment from Dr Mahatbir maybe?

As I said, the AG is so full of shit. And I bet he prays five times a day and fasts the entire month of Ramadhan as well. I suppose he can always go to Mekah after this to get his sins cleansed in front of the Kaabah like most Muslims do.

Munafiq!

Pairin sees no need to kick him out of office

By Joe Fernandez

KENINGAU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Joseph Pairin Kitingan sees no need for party members or voters to kick him out of public office.

He likened the party to a plane where the pilot, crew, mechanics and other workers must co-operate with each other to prevent any accidents.

Even though I have been the pilot (of PBS) for 25 years, there would come a time when I would be replaced, Pairin said in a pre-Hari Raya Aidilfitri remarks to PBS Sook delegates in Keningau in the west coast interior. However, I would not use a parachute and suddenly jump from the plane.

Pairin, also Huguan Siou (paramount chief) of the KadazanDusunMurut, was commenting on a growing unease with his long stay as party president, Keningau MP and state assemblyperson for Tambunan.

In reiterating that he would not quit suddenly, leaving PBS in the lurch, he gave no indication when he would walk into the sunset and not look back. His only promise was that he would leave gracefully.

Instead, he urged party members to co-operate with other BN component parties to ensure the ruling coalition won the election that is expected to be held anytime soon.

Pairin did not say what he plans on doing after he quits the political scene which he has dominated, along with his younger brother Jeffrey Gapari Kitingan, for the past quarter century.

He indicated, on the sidelines of the meeting, that he may write his autobiography. He has previously expressed the same desire as recently as late last month in Penampang at a book launch.

Everybody in their heart of hearts would like to write their own book, one way or another, in a big or small way. Its the same with me, he said. I have not worked it out. Some people have said why not but I have not given it serious thought. Other people have been writing about me in little ways.

Pairi! n said t hat maybe when I get inspired... maybe I will pen something and people can read about me in my own words.

The criticism among the young in particular, especially the opposition, is that hes squatting on the community. They want him to withdraw completely from the political scene immediately and focus instead on uniting the community as Huguan Siou.

Keningau parliamentary liaison chief officer Harry Otigil described Pairin as a great leader whose services and leadership are still needed by the people especially in the constituency.

The call for him to step down did not come from the people but the opposition who resorted to provocative and cheap politics to gain attention, he added.

Its not true that he has never spoken up for the benefit of the people especially those in the rural areas, said Harry. Pairin has done his best for the people.

Undisputed leadership

Liawan PBS information chief James Stephen also said the opposition has no right to ask Pairin to resign as he was duly elected by the people to struggle for and defend their rights.

Pairins leadership could not be disputed, he added.

He has championed the peoples rights in this state since he entered politics, said Stephen. The people still want him to be their member of parliament.

Many PBS Youth leaders, however, feel that Pairin has long outlived his usefulness.

If Pairin, again, decides to stand in Tambunan and Keningau in the next general election, he will really prove himself to be unreasonable, selfish and really unbecoming of a leader, said a Youth leader who wished to remain anonymous. Hes supposed to be old and wise, not old and foolish.

Pairin has already been returned unopposed late last year for another three years as PBS president. Fifty-five of the partys 60 divisions, based on the state constituencies, nominated him for the number one post.

Five divisions did not nominate him, according to PBS information chief Johnny Mositun beca! use they could not hold their annual general meetings in time.

PBS deputy president Maximus Jonity Ongkili, meanwhile, has ruled out challenging Pairin, his uncle, for the party leadership. The thought has never crossed his mind, he said. The party remains stable under the leadership of Pairin.

Maximus had previously said in public that this would be his last term in the party.

Pairin has since twice invited Jeffrey, in recent months, to return to the party which he helped co-found in 1984 but left after difficulties with Maximus, among others.

The younger Kitingan, it is learnt, is unlikely to return unless hes assured of the presidency by consensus and Maximus pledges loyalty to him.

PBS vice-president Herbert Timbon Lagadan, a Pairin loyalist, has publicly offered to vacate his party post for Jeffrey. Hes a national vice-president in the PKR, which has consistently tried to marginalise him in Sabah, according to his supporters.

Malaysia's Bakun dam - a monument to corruption?

NONE
Submerges an area the size of Singapore
(AFP) - The multi-billion-ringgit Bakun dam in Sarawak, already condemned as a catastrophe for the environment and the tribal people, is now battling suggestions it could become a giant white elephant.

The dam, that will eventually submerge an area the size of Singapore, is finally nearing completion after suffering a series of setbacks and delays since its approval in 1993.

But at the last hurdle the project has stumbled again, with delays in winning the state government's permission to begin the flooding process and no takers yet on purchasing its hefty 2,400 megawatt output.

With ambitious plans for an undersea cable to feed Bakun's electricity to the Malaysian peninsula now abandoned, the Sarawak government is the only feasible buyer - leaving it with a very strong hand.

Negotiations not going smoothly

Negotiations with the dam developer Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of the national finance ministry, have reportedly been tough.

"It's a case where the owner of the project is naming an asking price that is very different to what the buyer would want," said Wong Chew Hann, an analyst at Malaysia's top bank Maybank.

NONE
Add caption
"I understand there's quite a huge mismatch," she said. "I'm not sure what they've incorporated into the pricing, but the cost of the project has gone up so much since it was started."

As well as the cost of construction, there is the expense of compensating tribal people for their forced relocation from ancestral lands, and suppliers affected by the long delays.

"So the question is, are you going to incorporate all the compensation costs in the tariff price?" said Wong.

With the indigenous people from the Bakun catchment area long since resettled and its valuable timber resources long since felled, the dam has been ready to be flooded since April.

The state government had delayed permission, saying it was still evaluating river levels and the impact on boat transport.

A Sarawak minister reportedly said last week that the necessary permit has been granted, denying both that it had been used as a bargaining chip to lower the tariff and that Sarawak was facing an energy glut.

Not held to ransom

Sarawak Hidro managing director Zulkiflie Osman played down suggestions that he has been held to ransom by the state government.

NONE"Both parties are working together and want it to be settled amicably, with a tariff acceptable to both parties," he told AFP, adding that he expected to strike a tariff deal before December.

The next of Sarawak's mega-dams, the Murum, which is being developed by the state government, is due to come on line in 2013 but Osman said he was convinced the state authorities will not bypass the Bakun in favour of its own project.

Alongside the power purchase negotiations, the federal government is also said to be discussing selling the entire Bakun facility - built at a reported cost of RM7.3 billion - to the state government, but pricing and finance problems have emerged.

Star daily reported in July that the federal government was seeking RM8 billion while the state government offer was just RM6 billion.

NONEThe Bakun's output far exceeds existing energy needs in Sarawak, a relatively undeveloped state, and is mostly destined for industrial users such as aluminium smelters, but these are still on the drawing board.

"The main problem is that currently there is no demand for such a big capacity yet, and in order for Sarawak Energy to purchase the dam they would need adequate funding," said an analyst with a major research house.

"The banks would ask for some kind of feasibility study, and as there is no real demand yet this project risks becoming a white elephant," said the analyst, who declined to be named.

Newspaper reports have questioned how the federal government can ever hope to recover the huge amount of money it has sunk into the project.

'Non-starter'

bn supreme council mt meeting sapp sabah issue 190608 taib mahmud"Marred by too many disagreements, the RM7.3 billion project could very well turn out to be a non-starter," Star said last month, adding that with both the Bakun and Murum dams online there would be a "very real possibility" of a power glut.

Transparency International has labelled Bakun a "monument of corruption" in Sarawak, a state that has been ruled for three decades by the formidable Chief Minister Taib Mahmud (right).

NONEThere has also been fierce criticism over the botched relocation of 15,000 indigenous people, who have made an unhappy transition to life in drab resettlement areas.

Baru Bian (left), chairman of the opposition party Keadilan in Sarawak, said the Bakun project was designed purely to profit cronies, and not planned in the public's interest.

"The dam is a waste of public funds, it's not necessary, and what is paramount is that it is disturbing and disrupting the lives of the natives and the environment - the trees and the forests."

Umno risks further electoral loss by snubbing Perkasa, says Dr M

SERI KEMBANGAN, Sept 12 Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad warned today that Umno could lose further support in the next general election and risk deepening party schisms if it snubs Perkasa.

They (Umno) are so very divided that to distance themselves away from Perkasa will divide themselves even more, the former prime minister said at his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house here.

Dr Mahathir (picture) said Umno should not distance itself from Perkasa as the party could ill-afford to alienate even a single vote, given its less than stellar showing in the Election 2008.

Last election, the margins were very small. If you lose some support, you might even lose the election.

Umno... is not very strong. We cannot reject anyone because even if we lose 100 or 200 people, we might lose in certain constituencies, he said, adding that in the last election many Umno members voted for PAS.

He added that Umno should instead be getting close to as many groups as possible rather than quarrel with them, and said it was a prime principle to pick a fight with only one and not everybody.

Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali yesterday issued a thinly veiled threat to Umno, saying he might give guidance the pressure groupss 300,000 members 80 per cent of whom are said to be Umno members on how to vote in the next election.

Firing a shot across Umnos bow, Ibrahim said membership numbers meant nothing as only a select hardcore would vote for the party every time.

He claimed the rest could be overrid[den] by issues and persuaded to vote for other parties, and hinted that the perceived erosion of Malay rights was one such issue.

Dont think that Umno members will vote for Umno... You cannot take things for granted, so long as theyre your members, theyll support you. No, not necessary, the Pasir Mas MP cautioned.

The maverick independent MPs warning came just a day a! fter Umn os top leaders, who have kept silent so far on the topic of Perkasa, cautiously agreed that supporting the controversial groups views could prove detrimental to Barisan Nasionals (BN) struggle.

Leading the fray was Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, who told The Malaysian Insider that it was about time that Umno made a strong stand against Ibrahim and his Malay rights group.

Nazri, who has been the most vocal of all Umno leaders on the topic of Perkasa, even went a step further to assert that all of Perkasas members from Umno and its patron, Dr Mahathir, were political has-beens.

Also joining in was Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who told his BN component party counterparts that Umno will not back Perkasa or Ibrahim in the next general election as such a move will only erode non-Malay support for the ruling coalition.

However, opposition leaders, including Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, were sceptical of Umnos attempts to distance itself from Perkasa, pointing out that it was Umno that built up the Malay rights group to what it is.

Dr Mahathir reiterated his claim that Perkasa existed only because the Malay grassroots felt that Umno could no longer look after their interests, pointing out that the vacuum left by a weak Umno will only spur other groups to take their place.

He blamed increased demands from non-Malays to abandon the social contract for giving rise to groups like Perkasa, which he said was only reacting to challenges to the status quo.

During my time, there was no Perkasa. Everybody seems to be happy Chinese, Malays and Indians. But when somebody comes up and questions whether we should allow this to go on... then, of course, there is a reaction to that, he said.-Malaysian Insider

Millionaire Sosilawati mystery deepens as police confirm arrests

KUALA LUMPUR (Malaysian Insider) Police have arrested more than four persons in connection with the disappearance of cosmetics millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya and three men, but refused to confirm speculation that charred remains found in a Morib poultry farm last night belonged to the missing people.

According to various news reports, the police believe Sosilawati and her companions may have been killed and their bodies burned following the discovery of charred remains at a poultry farm in

Tanjung Layang, Morib yesterday night. Their ashes may also have been scattered either into the sea or along the beach.

My team is still at the place, newly installed Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Ismail Omar said at the Royal Malaysian Police Academy here today.

He added that he was confident that the police will solve the case soon with those arrests.

Millionaire Sosilawati carrying large amount of cashSosilawati, 47, her driver Kamaruddin Shamsudin, 44, CIMB Kampung Baru officer Noorhisham Mohammad, 38, and lawyer Ahmad Kamil Abdul Karim, 32, were reported missing since August 30 after going to Banting, Selangor, for a land purchase matter.

Sosilawati had told one of her daughters that she was going on a business trip to Banting for three days and was said to be carrying a large amount of cash.

On Monday, police found her BMW at Angsana Apartment in USJ 1, Subang Jaya and the BMW of Ahmad Kamil in front of a hotel in Subang Jaya but the missing millionaire has not been seen since she was spotted buying Raya cookies at a shop in Kampung Sungai Lan, Banting on September 2.

Media reports in both Mingguan Malaysia and Berita Minggu today said sev! eral sus pects including a lawyer with a Datuk title have been held in connection with Sosilawatis disappearance since Aug 30. The number of suspects range from six to seven.

Earlier, police have cordoned off a site at the poultry farm that was said to belong to one of the suspects, where excavation work was expected to be carried out today.

Police at the site said last night that a forensics team from Bukit Aman would be conducting investigations today.

It is believed that police recovered several items belonging to the four missing people at the same farm.

PKR is happening ... One hot battle on the cards

One hot battle on the cards

Insight
By JOCELINE TAN

PKR is facing its most happening election since its formation and the high stakes contest between its star Azmin Ali and high-flying lawyer Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has taken centrestage.

THE temperature in PKR is rising. The fight for the party’s deputy president post has become the hot topic at the Hari Raya gatherings.

Some people have been all hot under the collar over the accusations and counter-accusations going on between supporters of Datuk Zaid Ibrahim and Azmin Ali.

As such, when secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution was hospitalised last week, some thought he had crumpled under the pressure of the party’s first direct elections.

The top man’s preference: Anwar’s legal hurdles will play a big part in determining whether he prefers Azmin (left) or Zaid (right) as the next deputy president.

Saifuddin had been travelling all over the country - Perlis one day, Sabah the next, as he put it - to make preparations for the division meetings which will start in a week’s time.

By the third week of Ramadan, while the blood pressure of others in the party was shooting up, his blood pressure dived and he landed in hospital where doctors said he was also badly dehydrated.

Poor Saifuddin was probably suffering from political fatigue.

PKR is facing its most happening election since its formation in 1999.

This is the first party election based on the one-member-one-vote system and there has been a deluge of nominations for contests at the division level. The supreme council posts are also likely to see a crush of nominations.

But nothing has captured the interest of people inside and outside the party as much as the contest for the deputy president post between Azmin Ali and Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.

Johari: Supports Azmin because he has gone through hell for the party.

They are two big personalities with tall ambitions, deep pockets and they are claiming the political endorsement of different members of the powerful Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim family.

The intellectuals love to go on about how politics should be about issues and policies. But the reality is that a lot of politics on the ground tends to boil down to personalities and it is no different in PKR.

The fight is very much about the personalities of the two men, their histories and their ties with those around them.

Azmin is being portrayed as a party man, a loyalist not only to Anwar but to the party struggle, someone who has been there from the start of the Reformasi movement.

Said Kedah strongman and Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul: “He has been through hell and back for the party. They humiliated him, made him produce his two-year-old son in court, they said it was not his child, all not true. How many people would have put up with that? But he never left.

“We’re not saying Zaid is not good. He was a minister; we welcome him but he has never been in opposition politics. We need more time to assess him. Generals must move up the ranks; they cannot command the troops overnight.”

Azmin’s edge is that he has a track record in the party. It is not an unblemished record but it is there, nevertheless.

He has shown that he is a team player and had dutifully pulled out twice from the contest for the No. 2 post before when asked by Anwar.

Saifuddin: Probably suffering from some degree of political fatigue.

Zaid was welcomed into the party like a hero after he quit his minister’s post over the Government’s use of the ISA. It was apparent from day one that he was not there to be a foot soldier for he immediately moved into a role articulating issues that cut across party lines.

He is an intellectual; he thinks on his feet and is very articulate and persuasive no matter how complex an issue. But he is also all too human and his drinking and horse-racing have become political issues.

He is not a hypocrite about his liberal lifestyle and view but unfortunately Malay society can be very judgemental. That is what he is now struggling with.

He is also fighting the perception that he is an over-ambitious parachutist who is aiming to take over the party after barely a year.

Loyalty to the party has never been more crucial given all those people who jumped ship over the last one year. Members are asking: if he can walk out of Umno, what is there to stop him leaving PKR?

Zaid was reportedly livid about the show of force by the MPs and assemblymen aligned to Azmin earlier this week.

The gloves are off

Since then, there has been a blitz of articles running down Azmin in the news portal which is closely tied to Zaid’s interest.

One article titled “Party over in Sabah, Sarawak if Azmin wins” suggests that East Malaysia will abandon PKR if Azmin becomes the No. 2.

A letter that Azmin reportedly wrote to the Selangor Mentri Besar objecting to Zaid as the candidate for the Hulu Selangor by-election has also made its way into the portal. Among some of the reasons listed were that Zaid could not be trusted; he drinks and gambles; he is vengeful; his religious credentials are in doubt; and he had sued PAS over the hudud issue.

Anwar’s politician daughter Nurul Izzah has openly aligned herself to Zaid.

“Nurul Izzah is 100% with Zaid, or to put it more accurately, she is 100% against Azmin,” said a party insider.

Insiders said Anwar is uncomfortable with Nurul Izzah’s stand on the No. 2 fight but he is even more concerned that she may go for a vice-president post.

He thinks it is too early for Nurul Izzah to make such a big move and that it may alienate people in the party - father the supreme leader, mother the president and daughter going for vice-president.

The most-asked question is, who does Anwar favour? Is he backing Azmin as claimed or is he is still in two minds whether Syed Husin should let go or stay on another term?

Saifuddin, who has spent some one-to-one time with Anwar in the last few weeks, had asked the PKR leader if he was going to support anyone or any line-up.

“He said he is too old for all this. He said he has seen so much dirty politics after 17 years in Umno that he no longer wants to get involved in this sort of game. I believe he will leave it to the members to decide,” said Saifuddin.

Actually, that is a classic Anwar kind of answer - neither a yes or no, and not even a maybe.

The perception is that Azmin would not be moving so boldly without the blessing of Anwar. Azmin’s relationship with Anwar is such that while he can whisper into Anwar’s ears, he will also do as Anwar says. That is the depth of their relationship.

Azmin’s campaign style is vastly different from that of Zaid’s. He has a lot of people willing to speak up on his behalf and come out in the open to state their support.

Support from the Yang Berhormats has given an important boost to Azmin’s campaign even though the votes will be decided by a wider circle of people.

Zaid’s campaign, for someone of his stature, is rather too much on the defensive with too much play on the underdog status.

His strategy has been to pre-empt issues that the other side may bring up later in the campaign. He is meeting people on the ground but his campaign has been most visible via the Internet.

Different personalities

Even their respective blogs are a world apart.

Azmin’s blog has a very PKR feel about it and his album has photos of him and his wife in Mecca, both of them looking like any other pakcik and makcik from the kampung even though they live in the same posh neighbourhood as Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

Zaid’s blog is very much about the man of the world that he is. Although Haji Zaid performed his Haj last year, there are no pictures of him in Mecca but there are lots of photos of him and Tok Guru Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

Both men are presenting their religious credentials in their own way.

Zaid’s blog recently acquired a more contemporary look as he asks his readers to “Follow me as I work towards a better future for the people of Malaysia.”

This is a medium where he can really showcase his intellect and opinions because, in person, he is rather cold and aloof. Zaid has oodles of IQ but seems short of EQ or emotional intelligence.

Fortunately for him, Azmin is not exactly overflowing with EQ either.

The battle between Azmin and Zaid is happening in a big way on the Internet but it will be determined mainly by Selangor, Sabah, Penang and Perak where the bulk of PKR members are located.

The fight will also have a Malay flavour given that 55% of PKR member are Malays. And now that the holy month has given way to festivities, the gloves will come off and the real show is about to start.

The UMNO Perkasa Sandiwara

Petelagahan Umno Dan Perkasa Hanya Sandiwara

Don't tell me S'wak Chinese didn't benefit :Taib to George Chan

Chan and Taib
KUCHING (Bernama) — Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud disclosed today that he met Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Tan Sri Dr George Chan on Thursday and had “an exchange of opinion” with him.

Taib said the meeting went well and that Dr Chan had told him that SUPP would not leave the Barisan Nasional (BN).

“We had an exchange of opinion, details of which I wouldn’t want to reveal. I had given him my perspective of how the Chinese perceive problems and how we can bring them to work with the other races,” he told reporters here.

Has stranglehold on the state
Taib said he had also urged Dr Chan to find new ways to engage the Chinese community and to explain to them the government’s ideas and aspirations.

“If they don’t understand these ideas, they cannot participate in development and they will be left behind,” he said.

Taib said he had striven to help the Chinese community in the state.

“I have helped the Chinese in a general way. Don’t tell me that the Chinese have not benefited from our general prosperity,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Chan said Taib was supportive on many issues affecting the Chinese, including the need to assist Chinese schools and on the land premium rebate issue.

“With the strong support from the chief minister and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, we hope the state election will be easier for SUPP,” he said.

SUPP’s position in the state BN became the subject of speculation after several grassroots members said that there would be no purpose for the party to remain in the Sarawak BN if issues facing the Chinese community remained unresolved. — Bernama

Tanding jawatan Presiden PKR: Anwar belum ada jawapan

Azizah, Anwar asked to go for No. 2 and No.1 spots

Zaid and Azmin

Tajudin dicabar tuntut suruhanjaya siasatan

Penny Lane The Path That Pariah Made Possible ?

Penny Wong - when grit and talent triumph over hypocrisy, racism

KK-born Penny - Hakka dad, Aussie mom
Malaysia Chronicle

News that Penny Wong was made Australia’s Finance Minister created a stir in Malaysia, where she was born, especially at a time when her country of birth is going through one of its most tumultuous spates of racial and religious bigotry.

To the ethnic Chinese in Malaysia, Penny’s rise to such a high position in the Australian Cabinet symbolizes the system of meritocracy and equality that they crave for but have been largely deprived of as a result of 53 years of Malay political dominance under the Umno-BN government.

Indeed, many talented Malaysian Chinese are still fleeing their country of birth, seeking better educational and economic opportunities, and perhaps equally important peace of mind, in places like Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. Instead of improving, racial relations have only gotten worse in the Southeast Asian country, with ultra-Malay rights groups and Umno leaders now openly proclaiming and insisting on their supremacy over the other races.

Senator Penny Wong with her partner Sophie Allouache
Be that as it may, Penny or Penelope Ying-yen Wong could not have had an easy ride in what is basically still a largely White Australia, despite its better leveled playing field.

The 42-year old Wong is Australia’s first openly gay federal Cabinet minister and has made no bones about how gay and racial discrimination have set her back in the past. Still, her courage and her talent probably saved her from ignominy.

"By virtue of who I am, prejudice and discrimination are things I have first-hand knowledge of," Penny said in a recent interview with an Australian daily.

"When I entered the parliament, I did actually think very carefully about how to handle being Asian and gay and in the parliament, because it hadn't been done before. Part of the reason I did that was because I thought it was very important to show that you should never be ashamed of who you are."

Being part Chinese, she is no stranger to the racism that flares up occasionally in the Land Down Under. Nevertheless, Wong has managed rise above her obstacles to become the first Asian-born Australian federal minister. Before entering Parliament, she was a barrister and solicitor in Adelaide and an adviser to the Carr Government in New South Wales.

Hakka dad, Aussie mom

Penny was born on November 5, 1968, in Kota Kinabalu, capital of Sabah, East Malaysia to a Malaysian Chinese Hakka father and an Australian mother She moved to Australia at the age of eight with her mom and younger brother Toby, after her parents separated. Toby went on to become a chef in Adelaide, South Australia. Although her father does not live in Australia, they keep in touch.

In Parliament
After spending a year on exchange in Brazil, Wong studied Arts/Law at the University of Adelaide. When she was 18, she seized control of the Labor Club from a faction controlled by George Karzis. While at university, she worked part-time for the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union.

She also became involved in political activism at university, winning a position on the National Executive of the National Union of Students. Wong has been a delegate to the South Australian Labor Party State Convention every year since 1989, with the exception of 1995. Her time at university was one where a substantial number of contemporaries became Australian politicians. Senator Natasha Stott Despoja was a contemporary and former boyfriend Jay Weatherill, a senior minister in Mike Rann's South Australian Government among many others.

Wong graduated from university in 1992, and continued on with the CFMEU, working as an industrial officer, gaining admission to the bar in 1993. During 1995 and 1996, she acted as an advisor to the timber union and the newly-elected New South Wales state government, specialising in the area of forest policy in the middle of the fierce 1990s environmental battles over logging in NSW. On returning to Adelaide, she began practising law, won a position on the ALP's state executive, and also took on work as a legal officer with the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union.

First in many things

With ex-prime minister Kevin Rudd
She has held a number of firsts in Australian politics. Wong was the first Australian Minister for Climate Change and Water. Her appointment was amended on 26 February 2010, by the Prime Minister, to the Minister for Climate Change, Energy Efficiency and Water. This change in the Government's cabinet was brought about by the controversy of the Home Insulation Program (HIP). On 13 September 2010 she was sworn in as Minister for Finance and Deregulation in the Gillard Labor cabinet. She has been a member of the Australian Senate since 2002, representing South Australia.

Wong ran for pre-selection for the Senate in 2001, and was selected for the top spot on the Labor party's South Australian ticket. Wong is a member of EMILY's List Australia, the support network for Labor women, and, until appointment as a minister following the 2007 election, sat on a number of Senate committees, primarily those related to economics.

With Prime Minister Julia Gillard
In June 2005 Wong was appointed Shadow Minister for Employment and Workforce Participation and Shadow Minister for Corporate Governance and Responsibility. Following the reshuffle in December 2006, she became responsible for the portfolios of Public Administration and Accountability, Corporate Governance and Responsibility, and Workforce Participation.

In November 2007, in the wake of the Labor Party victory in the 2007 election, Wong was appointed Minister for Climate Change and Water. As a result of this promotion, she is the highest ranked politician representing South Australia. She accompanied Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to Bali for the international climate change talks. Wong led final negotiations as Chair of the United Nations Working Group in the closing days of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in December 2007, shortly after her appointment as Minister for Climate Change and Water.

On September 11, 2010, Prime Minister Julia Gillard - herself Australia's first woman premier - announced Wong’s promotion to succeed Lindsay Tanner as Minister for Finance.

Malaysian-born Penny Wong promoted Australia’s Finance Minister

September 11, 2010

MELBOURNE, Sept 11 – Malaysian-born Senator Penny Wong is the new finance minister in the newly-elected Gillard Labor Government.

Wong had been keen to move from the climate change portfolio, following her failure to have parliament’s upper house (Senate) approve the government carbon pollution reduction scheme.

A hardworking minister, Wong’s promotion nonetheless, came as a surprise when Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced her ministry today.

Born on November 11, 1968 in Kota Kinabalu, Wong takes over the finance portfolio left vacant by the high-profile Lindsay Tanner when he retired from federal politics in the August 31 election.

A former lawyer in Adelaide, Wong was elected to represent South Australiain the Senate in 2001 and was named minister in charge of climate change, energy efficiency and water when Kevin Rudd won office in 2007. – Bernama

Invitation was for an Aidilfitri event: Kelantan Exco

Sarawak BN finalising list of candidates

September 11, 2010

KUCHING, Sept 11 – Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) is finalizing its list of candidates for the impending state election.

Sarawak BN chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said he was waiting for the state BN component parties to finalise their candidate list for the coming state election.

“I’m waiting for the other party leaders to make their own assessment (candidate to contest in the coming state election),” he told reporters at the Hari Raya Open House held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here.

Taib (picture), who is the president of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB), the backbone of Sarawak BN, said he has identified 70 per cent of the candidates for the coming state election.

In PBB, he said new faces would replace a few incumbents who have “volunteered to go out”.

Among those who have volunteered were former assistant tourism minister Hamden Ahmad, who is the incumbent for Belawai and former assistant minister in the chief minister’s office, Bolhasan Di (incumbent for Beting Maro).

The state BN component parties namely PBB, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) and Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) took 71 seats in the 2006 state election.

In the last election, PBB took control of 35 seats, SUPP (11 seats), PRS eight and SPDP eight seats.

Meanwhile, SUPP’s president, Tan Sri Dr George Chan said 30 per cent of the party’s candidates would be new faces.

Dr Chan, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, said the party would field young professional candidates to wrest back the lost seats.

SUPP lost eight of the 19 seats it contested in the 2006 state election. It was the party’s worst defeat.

For PRS, its party president Datuk Seri Dr James Masing said the party would have a 30 per cent change in candidates in the election.

Masing, who is also the Land Development Minister, said the party would field a new face for Ngemah seat, which was won by independent candidate, Gabriel Adit who defeated PRS’s candidate, Alexander Vincent, in the last election.

Earlier, SPDP’s president, Datuk Seri William Mawan had said the party would retain all eight incumbents to defend their seats in the coming election. – Bernama

Dompok says problems if only Sabah-based party leaders allowed to join state Cabinet

September 11, 2010

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 11 — United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok said the position of half the Sabah Cabinet members would be affected if only leaders or elected representatives from Sabah-based parties were allowed to join the Cabinet.

This would probably create a problem, he said.

However, Dompok said there was a need for further discussion among leaders of the state Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties with respect to the probable appointment of an elected representative from a peninsular-based party as one of three Sabah deputy chief ministers.

“I will present our views to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman on this matter soon,” he told reporters after launching the Kota Kinabalu Upko division here today.

Dompok was asked to comment on the stand taken by Parti Bersatu Sabah president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan that the deputy chief minister’s post be given to a Sabah-based party following the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister and state Youth and Sports Minister Peter Pang En Yin from the Liberal Democratic Party on September 1. — Bernama
