Attention swivels from racial politicking to national plunder
Malaysia ChroniclePakatan Rakyat dismissed speculation of a widening rift between Prime Minister Najib Razak and his predecessor Mahathir Mohamad over ultra-Malay rights group Perkasa, pointing out it was a smokescreen and both men were likely to be more concerned about how to suppress a slew of huge corruption scandals from becoming public.
Let them talk, say what they want to hide the real issue but a lot information is already out in the open and more is going to be revealed soon, PAS vice president Salahuddin Ayub told Malaysia Chronicle.
Mahathir and Tajudin in their glory daysSalahuddin was referring to RM8 billion in losses incurred by national airline MAS, which so far appears to be the biggest financial debacle arising out of the BN's 53-year rule.Large-scale plunder
Not only is Mahathir and his immediate successor Abdullah Badawi accused of having plundered the airline, Najib has also been caught helping himself to a new mega-project the double-track national railway.
Perkasa, Ibrahim Ali, all these are nonsense. They are just Umno gimmicks. What you can tell though is Mahathir will have to give up more ground because the Malaysian public is no longer with him. He cannot rally enough support to overthrow Najib because he has destroyed his own popularity with his racism and Perkasa! s. Najib will get stronger but even so all three PMs will be vulnerable to further revelations of corruption because their deals were all so huge, the public backlash will be fantastic.
It does appear that the graft accusations swirling around town have hit a raw nerve. Raja Petra Kamaruddin, the operator the Malaysia Today website, has been at forefront of a series of articles exposing the ramifications behind several huge privatization deals. His website has been blocked and is down for a third straight day.
Not only has he accused Mahathir, Badawi and former finance minister Daim Zainuddin of helping Tajudin pilfer from MAS, Raja Petra also alleged that Najib was now using the national railway company as his new cash cow.
On Friday, Mahathir who is the patron of Perkasa defended the group after Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan disavowed links with it. His comments generated talk that his rift with Najib might widen as result of this dispute.
Perkasa members are Umno supporters. It would not help Umnos cause to turn them away, Dr Mahathir told the New Straits Times.
Letter & Opinion From Joe Public
PR: Utusan’s ISA call a bid to frighten Malays
By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal, The Malaysian Insider
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lawmakers have attacked Utusan Malaysia’s latest diatribe which calls for the Internal Security Act (ISA) to be used, saying it is an “old tactic” to scare Malays into thinking that their rights are being eroded.
The lawmakers claimed that the Ummo-owned daily’s push for the use of the law — which allows for detention without trial — reflects the party’s inability to address problems affecting the Malays.
It also intends to frighten the Malays into thinking that their rights, which are guaranteed under the Federal Constitution, are in jeopardy.
Utusan editor Zaini Hassan wrote the editorial today that called for the ISA to be used against those who questioned the Federal Constitution, saying “Use the ISA. All of us Malaysians want the government to use this law against anyone who wants to threaten the peace and stability in this country.
PR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim slammed the article, saying that Utusan’s latest claims reflect the ruling Umno elite’s inability to have an open “intellectual” debate on the Constitution.
“Utusan has tried this angle again and again. It is an age-old debate that has been going on. Utusan’s arguments represent the views of the ruling elite who are not prepared to face the Malay masses. They cannot address the problems that are affecting the Malays, therefore they are using the ISA as an excuse to make Malays feel that their rights are under threat,” said Anwar.
Anwar told The Malaysian Insider that Malays should be open to discussions on the Constitution, saying that the special rights of Malays and Bumiputeras under Article 153 will be upheld.
“Malays should have the confidence, they should have the strength and the resolve for an intellectual debate, to truly understand the position of the Malays today, and what they can do to become better, more competitive, more successful,” said Anwar, when commenting on the editorial.
The former deputy prime minister also defended his daughter — Nurul Izzah Anwar’s actions in inviting Malay rights group Perkasa for a dialogue on Malay rights recently.
“All (Nurul) Izzah was saying was that let us look at the provisions within the Constitution. Let us discuss this. The provisions are meant to be protected. It is only being discussed because leaders from the ruling elite have used this to protect their cronies.
“Who is questioning the Constitution? Their assumption is based on their lies and deceit, as well as their inability to form coherent arguments [based on] their archaic form of thinking,” added Anwar.
The Utusan article also called on the Najib Administration, specifically the Home Ministry, to be “firmer” in taking action against individuals who questioned the social contract.
“The Home Ministry has to be firmer...people are wanting firm action to stabilise the country’s situation, This is our country, we love this country, what do we care about what foreigners say about our country’s security.
“Only those who have ill intentions and don’t want the ISA to threaten them would oppose the ISA and would want it abolished. Don’t let a small group of protestors (less than 10 people) in London the other day be a reason for the government to be soft... everyone knows that the protests were done by the country’s opposition,” said the article.

Khalid: I am neutral ...
Taib is the King Digger !
Even from Sarawak’s sewers – Taib can dig RM78 million!
It has emerged that Abdul Taib Mahmud and his family have conducted a massive raid on the public funding for Kuching’s new sewerage system.
Figures show that out of a total 530 million ringgit handed out from taxpayers’ money to pay for the project, a staggering 78 million ringgit has been siphoned off by the Taib family and a crony company called Nishimatsu Construction (Nishimatsu’s parent company is currently being prosecuted in Japan in connection with a massive bribery and corruption scandal).
The theft is just the latest example of the so-called ’skimming’ of publicly funded projects by using bogus sub-contracts, which has become a standard form of abuse in Sarawak under Taib.
Critics have condemned it as the crudest possible form of corruption.
”Even a child could understand what is going on”, complained one outraged opposition figure last week, “the only reason Taib gets away with it is because he would sack any newspaper editor who dared to print what is going on. If the people knew the extent of it, the billions he has stolen in this way, they would be marching in fury!”.Skimming using bogus sub-contracting is now standard practice in Sarawak
The method of theft is indeed astonishingly simple and the Chief Minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud, has made it common practice during his thirty years rule over the State of Sarawak. First he abuses his position of power by placing a project in the hands of a company run by an unqualified member of his own family or a friend. Then the crony sub-contracts the project to another company that is capable of doing the job, but for far less than the original amount. This way the Taibs pocket the difference.
In the case of the Kuching Sewerage System, therefore, it came as little surprise to insiders when it was announced on 30th September 2008that the Chief Minister had awarded the 530 million ringgit contract to a consortium of three companies that included Kumpulan Construction, which is run by his sister, Raziah Mahmud. She and Taib’s brother Onn own 87.5% of the shares in the company.
So what does Raziah Mahmud know about building a public sewerage system?
Kumpulan construction reportedly has no construction equipment and Raziah Mahmud is not qualified to build a modern sewerage system. In fact, her meteoric ‘business career’ developed shortly after Taib Mahmud became Chief Minister, when numerous public contracts started coming the way of companies suddenly started up by herself and other Taib family members.
Onlookers point out that
Raziah Mahmud has only developed one area of evident expertise, which is her ability to rapidly sub-contract projects which have been handed to her by her brother. Thus, on 21st October 2008, less than a month after the original government contract was awarded to the consortium of Kumpulan Construction, Nishimatsu Construction and Hock Seng Lee Bhd (HSL) it was further announced by HSL that the project had now been sub-contracted to them alone, but at the much reduced sum of 452 Million Ringgit. This leaves 78 million ringgit unaccounted for in the hands of the other two companies, Kumpulan and Nishimatsu.Unsavoury business partner?

Sarawak Report would therefore like to know how the missing 78 million ringgit was divided between Raziah Mahmud and the Japanese-owned Nishimatsu Construction Co?
Nishimatsu Construction hit the headlines last year when the Japanese authorities arrested its Chairman for operating a I billion Yen slush fund, which he admitted he had used to make bribes to gain foreign contracts and to make illegal political donations. The scandal forced the resignation of the Japanese opposition leader Ichiro Ozawa.
Therefore, it is only fair to demand a clear explanation of the relationship between Nishimatsu and the Taib family and to ask what work could have been carried out by Kumpulan/Nishamatsu during this three week period that could have merited a payment of what is around US $25 million?
If such enquiries have brought a top political resignation in Japan, what might a proper investigation produce in Sarawak?
Taibs’ long-standing ties with Nishimatsu

Since Raziah’s take-over of Kumpulan in June 1986 (up to which point it was a dormant company) the projects awarded to the same three companies have included the 40,000 seat outdoor stadium at Petra Jaya worth RM105 million and The Senari Deepsea Port valued at RM160 million.
Unfortunately for the public purse however, the level of profit that Kumpulan has been able to register from these major ventures has been minimal, according to figures obtained from the Register of Companies. For example, in 1991 a turnover of MR8.5 million produced only MR 249,474 in profits and in 1991 a turnover of MR 5,811,443 produced profits of just MR 23,451. In fact for five of the years between 1986 and 1998 the company actually registered a loss for tax purposes.
How much went to Taib himself?
Given that Sarawak Report has now established that Taib family members operate a system of secretly holding shares in their companies in trust for the Chief Minister (see Unmasked – Taib the Godfather, Sarawak Report), the people of Sarawak can assume that in fact a large chunk of the money skimmed off from the sewerage project has gone straight into Taib’s own foreign bank accounts.
The vast ‘cut’ taken by the Chief Minister’s family for this project means that either the people of Sarawak have paid MR 78 million too much for the job in the first place, or that the contract is now short of money and will be inadequately carried out.
Worringly, the most likely answer is a combination of both, meaning the people of Kuching have paid too much money for a sub-standard sewerage system purely in order to further enrich the Taib family.
Reform of the system could immediately be carried out by returning to the conventional system of open tendering for public contracts, which is the globally-accepted method of preventing fraud of this nature and is supported by the main opposition parties in Sarawak.

Soi Lek the Chinese Ibrahim Ali: Race politics will always rule
Chua bids to regain votes with Chinese chauvinism?
If Malaysian Chinese held hopes the MCA could help broker a new politics for the country that tore through racial lines, then they will be sadly disappointed. MCA president Chua Soi Lek not only admitted racial tensions were rising in Malaysia, but refused to acknowledge it was due to the divide-and-rule policies promoted by the ruling BN coalition, insisting that race politics would always be the name of the game.
“It confirms what the Chinese community has been saying about him since he became president. He’s a running dog for Umno and can never take MCA or the Chinese community to new heights,” PKR vice president Lee Boon Chye told Malaysia Chronicle.
“He has promised to stay as president for only one year. MCA members better make sure he doesn’t change his mind because one year with him is already one year wasted. A good leader could have done so much more to help improve race relations in the country. But instead of trying, he has already made up his mind it can never happen. Why? Is it to curry favor with Umno so he can stay on when his year is up?”

Chua already given a warning by Muhyiddin
He has tried to show MCA’s independence from Umno, the dominating partner in the BN coalition, by calling for an end to the 30 percent Malay and Bumiputera corporate equity target. But he quickly retreated after Muhyiddin and other ultra-Malay rights leaders like Ibrahim Ali bombarded him with threats and warnings not to challenge their status.
Soi Lek got into another scrape when he tried to turn the Chinese community against PAS, the Islamic-based party in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, but again had to U-turn after prominent Muslim leaders in the country took him to task for his religious ignorance and bigotry.
The MCA president also failed a major test when he refused to speak up for controversial rapper Namewee, whom Umno leaders had wanted to prosecute for a three-minute video clip made to protest the racist behavior of two Malay school principals. The two teachers had allegedly told their Chinese pupils to go back to China and one of them likened the Indians to dogs.
Outright rejection of multi-racialism
Ibrahim Ali - Chua's 'mirror' image
“Whoever comes to power, whether it’s BN or PR, it’s a game of balancing, of managing the expectations, needs and fears of all the races. And this is not an easy game,” Soi Lek had said.
Pundits however point out that racial tensions rose in Malaysia not because of the Pakatan, but due to 53-years of built-up communal politics promulgated by the BN. In particular, Umno has been accused of stirring hatred in the Malays for the minorities especially the Chinese.
In the courses run by the BN's National Civics Bureau, it has been revealed that university graduates and civil servants were taught that Chinese are like Jews – the traditional enemy of the Muslims.
Yet Soi Lek made no mention of these factors, opting to pin his views on baser human instincts rather than call for a concerted national effort to blur racial lines. Such a call would surely get him into trouble with Umno, which promotes a Malay supremacy policy.
“He is a bogus and insincere leader. Malaysians especially Malaysian Chinese must ask why they should ever vote for him since he cannot even fulfill the basic requirements of nation-building,” PKR strategic director Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.
LETS BLOG IT: Malaysia Today blocked to cover up a scandal
From the Asia Sentinel
Inside: Documents revealed in Malaysia Today
Unknown forces attempt to blockMalaysia Today from printing documents involving a huge scandal
Malaysia Today, the hard-hitting news website edited by Raja Petra Kamarudin, has been blocked by mysterious technical problems twice in the last 24 hours after publishing damning articles of deep corruption at the top of the Malaysian government.
One implicated the United Malays National Organization, the countrys leading political party, in looting MAS, the countrys flag carrier. A second alleged that a friend of Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak was attempting to steer RM200 million into the pockets of Najibs family from China Railways Engineering Corporation (CREC), for double-tracking the national railway.
We are under severe attack, Raja Petra said in an email from London, where he now lives. Weve been down for the last 12 hours and a day before that for 24 hours. Looks like someone is spending a lot of money to keep us off the air. The websites technology personnel restored access, only to have it disappear again.
It was the MAS story, Raja Petra said. The site was brought down just a few hours after that. We revealed documents to and from the court to compromise the MAS case against Tajudin Ramli.
The fugitive editor was forced to flee the country 18 months ago after being charged with criminal defamation of Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, and being threatened with prosecution under the countrys stiff Internal Security Act, which allows for what amounts to indefinite detention without or trial.
It wasnt clear who was doing the blocking, but whoever it is must be learning that the Internet is a sieve. The offending stories almost immediately appeared in another anony! mous blo g called Malaysians Must Know The Truth.
Despite the fact that Malaysian bloggers have developed a healthy opposition press delivering voluminous details of government wrongdoings that cant be read in the government-controlled press, so far the Internet has remained free of interference. Government leaders have repeatedly denied any intention to shut down the bloggers.
Over recent weeks, however, Raja Petra has been particularly hard-hitting with a series of articles based on verbatim documents concerning the misdoings in MAS. The Asia Sentinel, in anAug. 24 article using the same documents, wrote that Tajudin Ramli, a crony of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, was accused of looting the airline of tens of millions of dollars and very nearly putting it into bankruptcy by investigators who themselves then faced a campaign to discredit them.
The airline, which had been privatized and turned over to Tajudin, had to be rescued by the government. After it had incurred RM8 billion in losses, Tajudin returned the airline to the government for almost the original price, the losses notwithstanding.
Raja Petra continued to write about the issue, culminating in an article on Sept. 8 in which he said Tajudin had been given immunity by UMNO with the backing of former Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and that reports by investigators and whistle-blowers went unheeded by the police.
In the article, Raja Petra said he had been visited by Tajudins lawyers in London, who told him that he had only been a front man for UMNO and that UMNO not only has to protect him from prosecution but that they also had to ensure that the government bought back the shares at the same price that they were sold to him although the shares were only worth a portion of the real value.
According to the article, which is printed here, This was going on not only for MAS but for other deals as well. The depositions listed a long series of documents detailing misdoings in UEM/Renong, an UMNO-linked constr! uction c ompany once headed by Halim Saad, another Mahathir crony, which has long been accused of looting the government treasury through vastly overpriced construction contracts.
These are all Tajudins allies working in concert to now spill the beans. They were all Umno front men and nominees. And they all now have an axe to grind with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Raja Petra wrote. And, more importantly, it appears like the current Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak, is giving his tacit approval for Tajudin Ramli, Rahman Maidin and Halim Saad to sing like a canary and finger UMNO, Dr Mahathir and Tun Daim Zainuddin as the real rogues behind the plundering of billions of ringgit of taxpayers money.
That wasnt all. On Sept. 5, Malaysia Today posted anarticle alleging that Tan Kay Hock, the controlling shareholder of Johan Holdings Bhd, a publicly-listed investment holding company and golfing partner of the prime minister had asked Chinese officials who had contracted to double-track the national railway for RM500 million and told them that RM200 million is for Najibs family.
And this is making the Chinese very unhappy because, in China, both the givers as well the sis charged to the family of the deceased, Raja Petra wrote. The Chinese are wondering whether it is worth the risk to pay Kay Hock the RM500 million he is demanding.
The national railway, he wrote, is being used as Najibs new cash cow. A deal to supply coaches worth RM1.4 billion went to a company involving Najibs wife Rosmah and two other women. The coaches were said to be worth only RM300 million and do not function.
The documents referred to by Malaysia Today are listed below.

Monkey please complain to monkey
File a report with MACC, IGP told
PETALING JAYA: An opposition leader has urged outgoing Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan to file a complaint with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) about his accusation of third-party interference in police work.
Klang MP Charles Santiago said Musa should do this if he was serious about cleaning up the police force, “especially if it involves corruption and framing of people as part of a political power play”.
On Tuesday, Musa had alleged that there were third-party interference during his tenure as the top man in the police force.
He said this included people from the Home Ministry, outsiders and those with vested interests, but the ministry had since dismissed this.
However, Santiago also took a swipe at the outgoing IGP, saying that Musa's recent outburst did not really do any good to his battered image.
“I am not surprised at his bitterness as he is on the verge of losing his powers. His attacks on government ministries and his thinly-veiled hints on the Home Minister (Hishammuddin Tun Hussein) did not speak well for his (Musa) integrity and honesty,” said the DAP leader.
Santiago said that Musa's track record in the force had been murky and taking pot shots at his former benefactors showed that he had no regard for the police force or the nation.
“It was during his tenure that the police force had been marred by the use of excessive force, with baton-wielding anti-riot police breaking peaceful demonstrations and candle light vigils.
“Not to forget an increase in lock-up deaths and gross abuse of power by police officers,” he said.

Taibs long-standing ties with Nishimatsu

Nishimatsu admitted paying 400 million yen bribe to build this water tunnel in Thailand. What was the deal in Sarawak?
Our researches have further shown that the Kuching Sewerage project is just one of several large-scale public construction projects that have been handed in much the same way to the same consortium of Kumpulan Construction, Nishimatsu Construction and HSL.
Since Raziahs take-over of Kumpulan in June 1986 (up to which point it was a dormant company) the projects awarded to the same three companies have included the 40,000 seat outdoor stadium at Petra Jaya worth RM105 million and The Senari Deepsea Port valued at RM160 million.

Despite the fact that Malaysian bloggers have developed a healthy opposition press delivering voluminous details of government wrongdoings that can't be read in the government-controlled press, so far the Internet has remained free of interference. Government leaders have repeatedly denied any intention to shut down the bloggers.
Over recent weeks, however, Raja Petra has been particularly hard-hitting with a series of articles based on verbatim documents concerning the misdoings in MAS. The Asia Sentinel, in an Aug.
In the article, Raja Petra said he had been visited by Tajudin's lawyers in London, who told him that he had only been a front man for UMNO and that UMNO "not only has to protect him from prosecution but that they also had to ensure that the government bought back the shares at the same price that they were sold to him although the shares were only worth a portion of the real value."
According to the article, which is printed here, "This was going on not only for MAS but for other deals as well." The depositions listed a long series of documents detailing misdoings in UEM/Renong, an UMNO-linked construction company once headed by Halim Saad, another Mahathir crony, which has long been accused of looting the government treasury through vastly overpriced construction contracts.
"These are all Tajudin's allies working in concert to now spill the beans. They were all Umno front men and nominees. And they all now have an axe to grind with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad," Raja Petra wrote. "And, more importantly, it appears like the current Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak, is giving his tacit approval for Tajudin Ramli, Rahman Maidin and Halim Saad to sing like a canary and finger UMNO, Dr Mahathir and Tun Daim Zainuddin as the real rogues behind the plundering of billions of ringgit of taxpayers' money."
That wasn't all. On Sept. 5, Malaysia Today posted an article alleging that Tan Kay Hock, the controlling shareholder of Johan Holdings Bhd, a publicly-listed investment holding company and golfing partner of the prime minister had asked Chinese officials who had contracted to double-track the national railway for RM500 million and told them that RM200 million is for Najib's family.
"And this is making the Chinese very unhappy because, in China, both the givers as well the sis charged to the family of the deceased," Raja Petra wrote. "The Chinese are wondering whether it is worth the risk to pay Kay Hock the RM500 million he is demanding."
The national railway, he wrote, "is being used as Najib's new cash cow." A deal to supply coaches worth RM1.4 billion went to a company involving Najib's wife Rosmah and two other women. The coaches were said to be worth only RM300 million and do not function.
The documents referred to by Malaysia Today are listed below.

Khalid, aye or nay?
I was in Hulu Selangor for the by-election last April.
I had heard that there was going to be moves within PKR to sabotage their own candidate. For what it was worth, I called and alerted Zaid.
On nomination day, and the days that followed, UMNO made it clear that they were going to deflect the attention of the voters away from the issues plaguing the nation by embarking on character assassination.
First off, it was ‘kaki botol’.
Then, it was ‘kaki judi’.
I was incensed. Pissed off. If this was how UMNO wanted to fight this by-election, we would fight fire with fire, I blogged then.
masterwordsmith-unplugged’s ‘PKR – Self-Destruct Mode?’ post yesterday got me troubled.
She reproduced a letter, dated 5th April, 2010 which she received from an anonymous reader, and which, on its face, appears to have been written by Azmin Ali to Selangor MB Khalid Ibrahim.
If this letter is authentic, it means that Azmin wrote to Khalid to warn of the several issues that could be raised by BN if Zaid were nominated to stand in the by-election.
If indeed written by Azmin, the very first issue that he mentioned was ‘Zaid dikenali sebagai kaki minum dan juga gemar berjudi di kasino”.
The very same two issues that were played up by UMNO at the very onset of the by-election were previously foretold by Azmin?
Prophetic?
Now, doctored photos portraying Zaid holding a bottle of whisky got pasted up all over the constituency.
Blogger OBE exposed this scam HERE.
OBE’s expose fingered the blog that first hosted these doctored photos.
In that blog, below those doctored photos, this explanation was proffered.
“gambar ini dikirimkan kepada gap oleh ‘sumber dalaman pkr’ . gambar ini disiarkan oleh gap bagi menjawap cabaran azmin ali kepada BN semalam.azmin ali dengan sengaja meminta BN membuktikan tohmahan kononnya zaid ibrahim seorang peminum arak yang tegar.apa niat sebenar azmin ali memberikan ‘bola tanggung’ ini kita sudah ketahui !”
Did Azmin in fact challenge UMNO to show proof and, if so, how?
More disturbing revelations on this matter in yet another blog.“Datuk Gap sudah menerima gambar berkenaan dari seseorang dalam PKR seminggu yang lepas.
These two blogs are run by pro-UMNO bloggers so, yes, take the contents with a pikul of salt.
However, if true, the implications are enormous.
As a starting point to trying to make some sense of all this, MB Khalid can shed some light.
He can confirm if Azmin did indeed write the letter of 5th April.
Khalid, what say you?
OMG! Another Teng Chang Khim story!
Teng Chang Khim has supporters as well as enemiesThomas Lee(MySinchew) - According to the Metro report published on Wednesday 8 September 2010, Sungai Pinang assemblyman Teng Chang Khims name is found to be written all over the place at public parks in his constituency.
Chang Khim, who is also the Speaker of the Selangor state assembly, has apparently adopted a publicity blitz strategy by having his name painted on benches, gazebos and playground equipment installed by him from his elected representative's annual allocation.
Chang Khim was quoted by the Metro report as saying that he had embarked on the publicity strategy after the Pakatan Rakyat took control of the Selangor state government following the March 2008 general election to show the consitituents what the new Pakatan Rakyat administration is doing for the people.
Chang Khim said he had spent 30% from his RM500,000 annual allocation to provide park facilities in his constituency.
He said that most of these venues used to be just empty fields but now they have benches, gazebos and mini playground facilities, obviously due to his efforts.
"The facilities will encourage the residents, including children, to come out of their homes and get involved in outdoor actitivies as a community, he said.
Obviously what Chang Khim has done for his constituents is commendable and worthy of emulation by other elected representatives, but the way he has used or abused the facilities paid for by public funds by promoting his own personal image is certainly questionable and impugnable.
The veneration of his name on public properties is not only in bad taste, smacking of egotism and self-importance, but surely an abuse of power.
As a veteran member and leader of the DAP, Chang Khim should know that since the party's founding on 18 March 1966, it has always frowned on the practice of ta! lking an d promoting about oneself excessively because of an undue sense of self-importance.
Hence, except for one or two black sheep from Perak, none of the party leaders has received civil awards, unlike the Barisan Nasional component party leaders who are crazy over titles and civil awards. Every other MCA leader, for example, is a titled personality, and I am sure all the MCA state leaders in Penang would have been made Datuks if it is the MCA running the government there.
Although veteran DAP leaders like Dr Chen Man Hin, Lim Kit Siang, Karpal Singh, Dr Tan Seng Giaw, etc, certainly deserved to be given the highest civil awards for their many years of service and sacrifices for the country, yet none of them has been given any award even after the Pakatan Rakyat took control of several states. As the Chief Minister of Penang, Lim Guan Eng should be bestowed the Datuk Seri title in acknowledgement of the appellation of the highest office in the state, yet he has not been bothered about such designation, but concerned only about how to give the Penangites the best quality of life and lifestyle.
It is simply flabbergasted that a person of Chang Khim's disposition should resort to the rather sham and cheap way to promote himself. The whole fiasco makes him look fatuous and foolish, and reflects badly on him as one out to promote himself as a personality cult image.
I don't think that such a publicity gimmick is practised anywhere else in the world, with the exception of North Korea where Kim Il-Sung is the country's Eternal President and venerated as a cult personality, with everything named and attributed to him.
Chang Khim was probably given the wrong advice by those around him, and so got into what I think is going to be a really grimy and messy scandal which will be exploited to the fullest by the political enemies of the DAP. I believe the MCA and Umno hawks are now sharpening their claws to launch another of their Selamatan Selangor attacks.
The damage is done and C! hang Khi m is now going to be under siege. What he should do as part of the damage control is to eat the humble pie, and admit his mistake, apologise for the lapse, and remove his name from all the facilities.
Nothing else will be able to redeem his stricken integrity and wounded probity. - MySinchew
Letter & Opinion From Joe Public
Police Brutality
Malay-sian police aid Malay mob in beating up Indian youths
Goodbye Musa Hassan. Welcome Tan Sri Ismail Omar to continue UMNO brute police racism and religious supremacy against Indians. Almost zero action against Malay policemen and Malay criminals.
By Human Right Party
For 53 years UMNO has been using the brute police force against the Indians.Just two weeks ago a mob of 15-20 malay muslims attacked Nithananthan a few Indian youths who were at the compound of their Vista Damansara flats after accusing them of trying to steal motorcycles. The police patrol car unit which arrived arrested instead the injured youths and let off the hook the Malay mob despite police reports against the said mob and the police for the inaction. The Indian victims were prosecuted for rioting and the Malay muslim mob gets away scot free.
Even as late as two months ago a Malay muslim mob of about 100 attacked an Indian family in Nilai, N. Sembilan. In broad daylight they beat up an Indian youth, seriously injuring him right before the eyes of the Malay muslim policemen. Three car windscreens of the Indians were smashed up. Instead nine Indian victims of the Malay muslim mob were arrested. One of them was actually beaten up by the police right in the centre of the Nilai police station.
Two months ago, Mugilan, a 16 year old youth and his friends were accused of disturbing an 8 year old Malay girl at a swimming pool in Pantai Hill. The police which was called in slapped Mugilan straight away and arrested him and his 5 friends, one of whom was dangerously handcuffed to the police motorcycle rear seat bar and taken to the police station. Mugilan was again beaten up in the police station by the very same policeman.
In the 2001 Kg Medan racial attacks against the working class Indians where a Malay muslim mob from outside Kg. Medan killed five Indians and grievously injuring 100 over Indians. It is 10 years now and zero action has been taken against the malay muslim mob despite scores of police reports against the police for their inaction.
95% of the Malaysian victims killed in police lock-ups and shot dead by the police for merely being “suspects” are the Indians.
80% of the detainees without trial for alleged gangsteriem at Simpang Rengam are Indians when they form only 8% of the population. Police summary justice, arbitrary action and expediency. Why not prosecute them in a court of law.
In fact almost every day we receive phone calls from nationwide of Indians being unlawfully arrested, beaten up, maliciously prosecuted by Attorney General Gani Patail. 99% of them being forced to plead guilty as they cannot afford to raise the bail or pay their lawyer legal fees.
This is just the tip of the iceberg of the racial and religious supremacist agenda and police enforcement of the law led by Tan Sri Musa Hassan of the Malay-sian police brute force, abuse of powers, high handedness, above the law mindset and police crime against in particular the most vulnerable and soft target poor Indian community who are politically powerless against the racist and religious supremacist.
And now the baton of command is passed on to Tan Sri Ismail Omar. Old wine in new bottle.
Only with a four star army general assuming the top leadership of the police force will we see some significant changes.
Selamat Hari Raya PRDM. Eat well!

Illegal arms, Umno Youth paramilitary training: PM Najib must explain
Najib - time to stop hiding behind platitudesViktor Wong, Malaysia ChronicleEven if the Umno-led BN federal government succeeds in shutting down all news portals that are critical of it, Malaysians already have a sense of what is going on and it would be better for Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is also the Umno president, to volunteer an explanation before they demand one.
The recent reports are very alarming. Umno Youth is apparently sending selected members for intensive paramilitary training. The federal government was reported to have acquired large quantities of arms and ammunition not via official channels but through secret and illegal channels.
Popular talk-show host sackedSo, what exactly is going? Why is Umno sending its Youth members for paramilitary training? Why are they buying those illegal arms? If these are meant for the nation's armed force, why do it so suspiciously, why buy illegal stuff? Is Umno planning to wage a war? And war against whom? The people and democracy?A pattern can be traced
We saw a number of crackdowns on political dissidents recently. Some senior executives and managers of a popular radio station were being terminated for being critical of the federal government. Two online news portals and the website of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim were attacked or blocked. Certain information related to power abuse and mismanagement at some government-linked companies were suddenly withdrawn from the press under the pretext of "for security reasons". Opposition politicians were denied press coverage and journalists instructed to minimize reporting on dissent and disapproval for government policies. The list goes on.
Where is our nation heading now? The economy is not improving, the inflation rate is ! going up , the people are unhappy with the current political situation and racism is rising. Are these the perfect combination for a lethal cocktail of terrorism and civil unrest?
1BigBluff
We would like to remind Najib, if our suspicions are not true, then come out and explain. Prove us wrong but no platitudes and generalities, please. Give us evidence, give us facts. As it is, many Malaysians find it hard to believe you at all. Those who are old enough will remember it was under your father's watch that the May 13, 1969 racial riots broke out. Again the incident was manipulated by Umno and for the sake of political power.
So don't blame us for being suspicious and for thinking you might be tempted to do the same thing as your dad did!
See What Barisan Nasional Gotta Say?
