Azmin, Zaid among frontrunners for PKR deputy presidency

PKR supreme council member Zaid Ibrahim's announcement that he will contest in the upcoming party polls - the first direct election with voting being carried out over four weeks in October and November - has brought about intense speculation over who will vie for the coveted deputy post.

The post, currently held by Syed Husin Ali, is up for grabs should the incumbent announce his intention to step down in the coming weeks.

The veteran politician, who has held the post for two terms, is likely to quit following family pressure and health concerns.

While Zaid did not specify which post he is contesting, he is a prominent figure in the list of four said to have the deputy post in their sights.

The others include fellow supreme council member and vice-president Mustapha Kamil Ayub, Selangor MB Khalid Ibrahim and vice-president Azmin Ali.

But according to a former political bureau member who request anonymity to adhere to party discipline, it is likely to be a straight fight between Zaid and Azmin.

Having come under so much criticism from PKR lately, Khalid's political support is questionable.

He also admits to be less interested in politics, preferring instead to focus his attention on running the state.

Mustapha, one the other hand, is a "non-starter" who is believed to be "planted" in the ring to discourage others from contesting the same post, the source said.

According to the source, who holds a prominent party post, the vice-president is also too much of an "unknown figure" to have a chance in this battle of giants.

Wanita PKR chief Zuraida Kamaruddin agrees: "He (Mustapha) is an old face, but profile-wise, he will lose out to Azmin."

This is despite that both men have been in the party for about the same period of time.

Zaid's loyalty untested

Azmin Ali
Azmin's lengthy experience in the party puts him head and shoulders over Zaid, whose loyalty some feel is still under question, she said.

"(Zaid) has yet to be tested. No doubt he has made his sacrifices in Umno. But after the defections, the grassroots are very cautious about loyalty.

"The members would want to ensure continuity, they would vote for someone who understands the party struggle," she said.

Zaid, who is also Federal Territories PKR chief, had joined PKR as a 'prized catch' two years ago.

Although saddled with allegations of money politics in Umno, his protest resignation as de facto law minister after the Internal Security Act was used against dissidents, gained him respect and raised his public image.

But as a man of principle, Zaid also appears to be marching to his own tune and is uninterested in keeping up appearances.

Political bureau member S Manickavasagam said for Zaid, a relatively new party member, to go for such a high position could rub some people the wrong way.

"People would think that a new (member) shouldn't suddenly contest for such a high post," he said of Zaid, whom some claim had even considered the top post.

Azmin, he added, is far more recognisable, particularly in Selangor where he was recently appointed state chief - a position which was taken from Khalid following apparent unhappiness in the party.

Support in Selangor is important as the state has the most number of the party's 400,000 members, each of whom will contribute a vote for the aspiring candidates.

Azmin's political ambitions

To some extent, said Zuraida, the said rift between Khalid and Azmin will influence the decision of members.

While the party leadership denies it, the issue has been heavily reported by the media and could influence members who are not privy to leadership meetings, she said.

The changing of the guard in Selangor PKR is reminiscent of allegations that Azmin was involved in internal sabotage, which led to Zaid's defeat in the Hulu Selangor by-election.

Azmin's obvious political ambitions could also hurt his campaign, particularly in Sabah, said the former political bureau member.

The vice-president is alleged to have masterminded the suspension of 12 leaders due to their role in setting up Parti Cinta Sabah last year.

"Sabahans also do not favour him as he played a role in bringing Umno to the state when he was Anwar's aide during his Umno days. He is seen to still act like an Umno man," he said.

On the other hand, Zaid's 'liberal' approach has attracted the attention of the majority non-Malay members of PKR.

"PKR may have Malays at top leadership but less than 60 percent of its members are non-Malays. 20 percent are from Sabah, 15 percent are from Sarawak and there is a sizeable number of Indians," he said.

This 'liberal' image is also not going to put off the Malay members of PKR, he said, of whom half would probably vote to back Zaid in protest against Azmin's 'Umno-demeanour'.

Spanner in the works

While party loyalty is important, said another party insider, Azmin's performance in the past 10-odd years pales in comparison to what Zaid has achieved since he joined.

"Zaid is seen as someone who can put together structures and develop strategies. The fact that he was chosen to put together the Pakatan common policy, and not Azmin, says something," he said.

At the same time, the experienced politician's glowing public image is believed by some to be due to his influence in the media.

While he refutes such claims, Zaid is said to be linked to a number of non-mainstream print and online media which have been championing his case against Azmin.

Whatever the case, nothing is certain until Syed Husin's announcement, said the former political bureau member.

"He can put a spanner in the works. He has not, and will not, likely to throw his support behind either Azmin or Zaid," he said.

He added that if the 74-year-old contests and retains his seat, and later decides to resign before his term ends, the supreme council will need to appoint an acting deputy president.

If Azmin is indeed Anwar's blue-eyed boy as claimed by many, there will be no questions over who the new PKR No 2 will be, he said.

Soi Lek, Gerakan slammed for turning a blind eye on Namewee

Namewee faces arrest for his 'Nah' video
Malaysia Chronicle

As signs turn increasingly ominous for controversial rapper Namewee, Pakatan Rakyat leaders flayed MCA president Chua Soi Lek for turning a blind eye to the youngster’s plight despite blatant double standards imposed by the Umno-led government in the case.

“How can the MCA leadership with four Ministers in Cabinet take such an irresponsible position, giving a blank cheque to racists and extremists to set the agenda as to the punishment that should be meted out to Meng Chee? Isn’t this a gross abdication of responsibility in government?” said DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang in a statement.

Not only irresponsible, absence of fair play

Kit Siang is among the first Pakatan leaders who have spoken up for the 27-year Namewee, whose full name is Wee Meng Chee. PKR strategic director Tian Chua and vice president Lee Boon Chye have waged a verbal onslaught against Namewee’s perceived persecution.

Muhyddin warns of stern action
The Muar-based rapper got into trouble with the authorities after releasing a three-minute video tape lambasting two Malay school principals for hurling racial slurs at their Chinese and Indian pupils. But despite the underlying anti-racism message in Namewee's video, several Umno and BN leaders including Soi lek have seized on the vulgar language Namewee used and counter-accused him of being racist against the Malays and of having committed sedition.

There is also speculation that Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had wanted to play up Namewee’s video so as to deflect pressure from his ministry to act against the two teachers. Muhyiddin is also the Education minister and has tried to delay making a decision on their fates. While both headmistresses have apologized, there is strong public demand for them to receive stiffer punishment including demotion or even sacking and prosecution under the Sedition Act.

Tian calls for fair play
“As far as most Malaysians are concerned, there is no fairness in this case at all. The BN government including Soi Lek is only bullying and twisting the facts. Namewee’s video is available and people can judge for themselves. What the two headmistresses have said are also record. How can you turn something that is not racist into racism and something that really is racism into something that is not,” PKR’s Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

"We hope the government will be fair not just to Namewee but also to the two teachers. We do not want anyone to unjustly punished. But the BN government must act fairly – who is wrong must be punished fairly and befitting of the wrongdoing. It cannot simply manipulate just to achieve a certain political outcome to benefit its own leaders.”

MCA, Gerakan neglected Namewee's rights

Kit Siang: MCA irresponsible
BN multiracial component Gerakan has been silent on the issue although its Kedah leaders were among the first to report on one of the headmistresses. Both women had allegedly told their Chinese pupils to go back to China and one of them even likened the Indian students to dogs.

The pair has also apologized to the pupils’ parents, while Namewee too has withdrawn his video from Youtube and issued a clarification that he had not meant to hurt the Malay community. He said his only target was to teach the two teachers a lesson for hurling racist remarks at their pupils.

Soi Lek - sex scandal in 2007
However, while no further police action has been taken against the headmistresses, Namewee was interrogated by the MACC for 7 hours on Friday. A few days earlier, he was quizzed by the police for 3 hours. He has said he fears he will be arrested soon and the sound bites coming from Muhyiddin do indicate that he may be taken in by the authorities.

“Is the video crude, vulgar, abusive and even obscene? Yes. I have said twice publicly that I do not approve of the crude, vulgar, abusive and even obscene style used by Namewee but that is different from saying that it is seditious or racist and deserves the harshest criminal action to be taken against Meng Chee,” said Kit Siang..

“This is also why I cannot agree with the public stand of the MCA President Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek who declared on National Day eve that MCA fully supports any action taken by the government against Meng Chee. Does this include action under the Sedition Act or other capital offences?"

Double standards

PKR vice president Lee Boon Chye has also slammed the double standards displayed against Namewee and called for Prime Minister Najib Razak to intervene to stem the rising unhappiness amongst the non-Malays especially the Chinese over the Namewee flare-up.

Boon Chye: Don't drag on
“It cannot go on like this. Surely, there must be an outcome. If Muhyiddin continues to procrastinate, the feelings of unfairness and racial discrimination will only get stronger,” Boon Chye told Malaysia Chronicle.

Boon Chye also took Soi Lek to task for hypocrisy towards Namewee, referring to the 2007 video scandal where the 63-year old MCA president had been filmed having sex with his mistress. The video was widely viewed around the world and Soi Lek has blamed his foes within MCA for sabotaging his career.

“Soi Lek has no moral standing to criticize Namewee. No matter how vulgar Namewee was in his expression, it cannot be worse than Soi Lek’s video. Just ask youselves, if our children listened to Namewee’s tape and then watched Soi Lek’s video, which one would be the greater negative influence,” said Boon Chye.

Why double standards against Namewee, not headmistresses?

Lim Kit Siang

Why double standards against Namewee, questioned for over 10 hours, for his anti-racist outburst as compared to treatment for the two errant school principals?

Four questions need to be asked in the Nameweek’s “Nah” videoclip controversy.

Firstly, is the three-minute video “Nah” uploaded on YouTube by rapper Wee Meng Chee better known as Namewee seditious? I would say no.

Secondly, is the video racist? I would also say no, unless an anti-racist response has also become “racist” in the way that former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad wants Malaysians to believe that meritocracy has become a form of racism.

Thirdly, is the video crude, vulgar, abusive and even obscene? Yes. I have said twice publicly that I do not approve of the crude, vulgar, abusive and even obscene style used by Namewee but that is different from saying that it is seditious or racist and deserves the harshest criminal action to be taken against Meng Chee.

This is also why I cannot agree with the public stand of the MCA President Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek who declared on National Day eve that MCA fully supports any action taken by the government against Meng Chee. Does this include action under the Sedition Act or other capital offences?

How can the MCA leadership with four Ministers in Cabinet take such an irresponsible position, giving a blank cheque to racists and extremists to set the agenda as to the punishment that should be meted out to Meng Chee? Isn’t this a gross abdication of responsibility in government?

The fourth question is whether Meng Chee is the victim of double standards by the authorities?

Yesterday, Meng Chee was questioned for more than seven hours at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for the “Nah” videoclip. Three days earlier, he was questioned for three hours by the police – making a total of over ten hours of questioning by the authorities since National Day.

In contrast, the two schools principals in Kulai and Bukit Selayang, who had made racial and seditious slurs against non-Malay students, had been spared such an ordeal although Meng Chee’s video was made as an anti-racist protest against these two incidents.

The Public Service Department (PSD) is reported today as saying that a show cause letter will be issued to the school principal in Kulai if she had indeed uttered derogatory remarks at her students recently.

Three weeks have passed since the incident in Kulai on 12th August. Is it so difficult to establish the facts and the truth of the incident?

Where is the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s pledge of “Zero tolerance for racism” and his slogan of “1Malaysia. People First. Performance Now” when there could be such great contrast between the treatment meted out to the two errant school principals and Meng Chee?

If action is to be taken against Meng Chee, there must be a sense of proportion and justice with regard to the action meted out to the errant school principals on the one hand and Meng Chee on the other.

UMNO Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin’s self-serving response to my statement on Thursday does not merit much attention as I had never said that “two wrongs make a right”.

However, a person who had been guilty of making racist statements should not be trigger-happy to demand action to be taken against others on the alleged ground of racism.

Malaysianki readers have themselves shot down Khairy’s self-serving explanations in the Malaysiakini interview, as his defence of his racist statements would be as believable as his support for the keris-wielding incidents by the Umno Youth leader, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein for three years consecutively when he was then Deputy Umno Youth leader!

Khairy’s claim “if you ask 10 Malaysians what they thought” of the Namewee line “You tak baca? Siapa buat Malaysia kaya?” that 10 Malaysians would agree with him that it was racist is debunked by one reader who commented:

Wong Jiang Fung KJ: “If you ask 10 Malaysians what they thought Namewee meant by that statement, they’d say that there is an obvious undertone which is suggestive.” “Of course it was offensive, implying that we don’t have any contribution at all,” I have 10 friends on fb who watched the video, none of them think like KJ did. This proves KJ is wrong. The statement is controversial but not seditious.

Writer Mariam Mokhtar in her article ‘Namewee is a uniting factor’ also clearly does not agree with Khairy, and I would urge Umno and MCA leaders to ponder what she wrote, viz:

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin adopted a different spin on Namewee’s questions: “You tak baca? Siapa buat Malaysia kaya?” (Don’t you know? Who made Malaysia prosperous?). Khairy assumed that Namewee suggested the ‘Malays played a minor role in Malaysia’s economic growth’.

Khairy is possibly wrong and as far as can be ascertained, Namewee wasn’t alluding to anything.

Namewee posed an open-ended question. However, political personalities are already scoring brownie points by insinuating various things.

Namewee was wrong to be abusive – even I would balk short at such behaviour. But Namewee speaks for all those who suffered that day in school and for the people in Malaysia who care.

Maybe if the authorities had been swift in their response, Namewee would not have had the reason to come up with this clip.

The more potent danger

Actually, Namewee has done the job of the government much better that the government itself. It has given prominence to racism issues in a creative way and made us take a stand against racism. If not for his Youtube, clip, would we have taken as much attention? The problem is that the authorities have ‘lost it’.

When Dr Chua Soi Lek criticised Namewee and said, “Freedom of expression should come with responsibility to consider sensitivities towards other races and religions”, he forgot that it was the two school principals who ignored sensitivities and caused a furore.

And instead of the school principals being censured, it is Namewee who is allegedly being charged with sedition. Namewee’s clip was crude and coarse, but not racist.

This young disgruntled Malaysia’s response to racism has been blown into something of a racial firestorm. That is the more potent danger.

It seems that when you scratch beneath the surface, 1Malaysia is unraveling faster than a knitted jumper. One person condemns an irresponsible racist head, and the so called defenders of the race, react like beasts unleashed, and all for the wrong reasons.

Namewee has talent. He engages with the young via his rap music and lyrics. He should be nominated for a role in the Ministry for Information, Communications, Culture and Arts, to promote racial unity and other Malaysian issues.

Far from creating disharmony, Namewee has united us against racism. He at least has the courage to tackle racism in his own entertaining way. - (Lim Kit Siang is the DAP adviser)

PKFZ: The next 'big fish' after Hari Raya and to come from Umno

Malaysia Chronicle

Speculation has intensified that after Hari Raya the next ‘big fish’ will be hauled up for RM12.5 billion Port Klang Free Zone financial debacle, and this time it is learnt it will be someone senior from Umno.

Former Transport minister Ling Liong Sik was the first prominent political leader to have been arrested over PKFZ. Charges were pressed against him on July 30 for misleading the Cabinet on the project's land valuations. He has pleaded not guilty.

In the days that followed Ling's arrest, there were high expectations that Prime Minister Najib Razak would follow through with a long overdue promise to weed out corruption. But more than a month has passed and no one other than Ling has been brought in.

Ling Liong Sik's arrest shocked the nation
As a result, Najib’s already thinning credibility took further blows. He was accused of making decisions to manipulate the political situation at both Umno and BN to his advantage, rather than attempting to solve the endemic corruption in the country.

The Chinese community also saw in Ling’s arrest a stepping stone for Najib to placate the Umno grassroots while he went after several key leaders in the party that he regarded as obstacles to his career.

But Umno watchers deny the allegations and said the PM had to bide his time because the investigators were not ready.

“He may also have pulled back because he felt the timing was not to his advantage. He is extremely cautious but after Hari Raya, he will make his next move. It will be someone very senior in Umno even though he may not be so active in the party anymore. There will be a few others but it may not be all in one go,” a reliable source told Malaysia Chronicle.

Chan Kong Choy
Mat Tyson or Chan or Tiong

Names that have been bandied around include former Selangor mentri besar Muhammad Muhammad Taib, another former Transport minister Chan Kong Choy and Bintulu MP Tiong King Sing, whose firm Kuala Dimensi was the turnkey contractor which racked up the project's massive cost overruns.

Muhd Taib aka Mat Tyson
PKFZ is an ambitious integrated port development mooted during the Mahathir Mohamad administration. It took off in the early 2000s and Abdullah Badawi continued the project after Mahathir retired in 2003.

The scandal has been described as a true Malaysian power play of conflict of interests, weak project management and bad governance at the highest levels - all the way up to Mahathir and Badawi.

Tiong King Sing
Among the personalities named in an external auditor's report are two former transport ministers Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik (1986-2003) and Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy (2003-March 2008), former Minister of Housing and Local Government Tan Sri Dr Ting Chew Peh, who was also Port Klang Authority chairman (2000-2004), former Serdang Member of Parliament Datuk Yap Pian Hon who was Port Klang Aurhority chairman (2004-2007), Alor Setar Member of Parliament Datuk Wira Chor Chee Heung, who was Port Klang Authority chairman (2007-2008), former UMNO treasurer Datuk Seri Azim Mohd Zabidi, the first woman general manager of Port Klang Authority Datin Paduka O.C.Phang and the project "executor" Bintulu Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Taib gets full support from party

KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) today expressed its undivided support for Abdul Taib Mahmud to remain as the party president, saying this was necessary to maintain political stability and continuous development in Sarawak.PBB deputy president Alfred Jabu said the support was expressed by all the PBB supreme council members and all the leaders of the various segments of the 71 branches of the party.

The support was expressed via a pledge of loyalty and a resolution at the meeting of the PBB supreme council chaired by Taib himself, he said.

"We (PBB members) unanimously support the leadership of Pehin Sri (Tan Sri) Abdul Taib Mahmud and will continue to support his leadership and that of Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak," Jabu, who is a Sarawak deputy chief minister, told reporters this evening.

Taib, who is Sarawak chief minister, left 10 minutes earlier and declined to speak to reporters who had been waiting since morning. He left it to Jabu to attend to the newsmen.

See What Barisan Nasional Gotta Say?

Anwar: Deception is Umno's routine

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Sept 5 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim took his campaign against the Barisan Nasional (BN) to his political fortress here last night when he accused the ruling coalition of circulating a doctored picture of Lim Guan Eng slaughtering a cow in a bid to win more support.

Anwar said the action showed that the coalition was desperate for superimposing a picture of the Penang chief minister over that of someone slaughtering a cow for Muslims consumption.

He urged the Malays not to be fooled by what he claimed to be Umno’s lies.

“Do not follow the practice of Umno and BN. Deception is their routine to win over support,” the Permatang Pauh MP told reporters after presenting Aidilfitri gifts to mosque officials here.

Anwar said Muslims should show respect for the holy month of Ramadan by abandoning the practice of slandering political opponents.

Earlier Penang Umno had denied any involvement with the circulation of the picture, challenging Pakatan Rakyat (PR) to prove their allegation.

Its secretary Datuk Azhar Ibrahim said the Malay party had no knowledge of the picture adding that it was not Umno’s style to gain popularity.

“Making false accusations is not our way. If it is true Umno was behind it show the evidence. Diverting the public attention to cover up own mistakes is also not Umno’s style,” said Azhar.

Anwar also said that Umno leaders have tarnished the image of Islam by politicising the mosque visits by non-Muslims.

“Non-Muslim visiting mosques or surau is not new. It has been a normal practice to approach the Muslim community,” said Anwar.

“Because Umno and BN have run out of political issue, so they sensationalise this thing while at the same time some of their leaders are responsible for undermining religious institution,” he added.

On his visit to Sarawak recently, Anwar said the party has been getting encouraging response.

“We have a good chance there, but the media is not being fair to us by not reporting the truth,” said Anwar.

“But we will work harder to strengthen ourselves ahead of the general election so we can fight for the interest of the people there,” he said.

The event last night was also attended by Penang Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Mansor Othman.

How playing golf with the Prime Minister can earn you billions

Tan Kay Hock is the low-profile controlling shareholder of Johan Holdings Berhad, a public-listed investment holding company. He is also the golf buddy of Najib Tun Razak and this relationship has made him hundreds of millions. Kay Hock recently caused ripples in China when he asked the Chinese for RM500 million and told them that RM200 million is for Najibs family.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Raja Petra Kamarudin

For about ten years and over three Prime Ministers, the current Prime Minister included, the contract for the double-tracking electric train from Gemas to Johor Bahru has been ding-donging. Despite what was agreed between the leaders of China and the three Prime Ministers, which was later confirmed by the issuance of a Letter of Intent to China Railways Engineering Corporation (CREC), the government is again backtracking.

Najib now wants to award the contract to China Harbour Engineering Co. Ltd. (CHEC) instead, the company that is building the Second Penang Bridge -- which shot up from RM1 billion to RM4.5 billion and now to RM22 billion (read more on the matter below).

The man behind this is Tan Kay Hock, Najibs golf buddy. He is brokering the deal on behalf of CHEC.

The Chinese say that Tan Kay Hock is demanding RM500 million from CHEC and he told them that RM200 million is for Najib's family. And this is making the Chinese very unhappy because, in China, both the givers as well the receivers of bribes will be sentenced to death with a bullet in the head plus the cost of the bullet is charged to the family of the deceased.

When the Chinese government offered the Malaysian government a loan to construct the Gemas to JB railway they indicated that CREC should be the contractor. CREC is one of the biggest specialist contractors for electric trains while CHEC has not constructed eve! n one ki lometer of electric railway (more details below).

A Letter of Intent had already been awarded to CREC. Now the government wants to cancel this Letter of Intent and issue a new Letter of Intent to CHEC. But for the new Letter of Intent to be issued to CHEC they must fork out RM500 million, which Kay Hock claims RM200 million will be paid to the Prime Minister of Malaysias family.

This is not only a violation of the terms of the loan from China but CREC is the company with the experience in constructing electric railways, not CHEC, the company already involved in the construction of the Second Penang Bridge. Added to the withdrawal or cancellation of the Letter of Intent to CREC and a new one issued to CHEC, with a RM500 million price tag attached, it puts the Chinese government in a dicey spot when the risk would be a bullet in the head for those who approve the payment.

The Chinese are wondering whether it is worth the risk to pay Kay Hock the RM500 million he is demanding. If the Letter of Intent to CREC can be withdrawn after issuing it, what guarantee is there that the new Letter of Intent to CHEC will also not be withdrawn after they pay the RM500 million?

The Chinese are very aware that Vincent Tan also received a Letter of Approval for his gaming licence, signed by the Deputy Minister of Finance. However, after he paid RM170 million under the table, Najib denied in Parliament that Vincent Tan had been given a gaming licence and subsequently the Letter of Approval was withdrawn.

KTM is being used as Najibs new cash cow. The EMU coach was a deal involving Rosmah Mansor (Najibs wife), Mumtaz Jaafar (Saiful Bukhari Azlans godmother) and Cindy (Desmond Lim's wife). Desmond, in fact, handled the deal where KTM coughed out RM1.4 Billion for coaches that cannot function. According to KTM, the coaches are not even worth RM300 million.

The saga gets more interesting with Najib and Rosmah holidaying in Monaco as guests of Jho Low -- who told ev! eryone t hat the yacht belongs to the Prince of Qatar. It was later revealed that Jho Low rented the yacht for Euro 90,000 per day to allow Najib and Rosmah to rub shoulders with Hollywood Starlets.

That brings us to a very crucial question. Where did Jho Low get that kind of money? Well, you see, after Malaysia Today exposed Deepak Jaikishan -- Rosmahs carpetman cum bagman cum toyboy -- she was forced to dump him. So now Jho Low is Rosmahs new Mister Fixit and Collector of Commissions.

Let us see how the CHEC-Tan Kay Hock saga is played out. Now that the Chinese government knows that we know about the RM500 million deal would they dare still proceed with it? And does Tun Dr Mahathir Mahathir know that Najib has hijacked his pet electric train project?

The Second Penang Bridge

The Second Penang Bridge is a new bridge under construction in Penang, Malaysia. It will connect Batu Kawan on the mainland Seberang Perai and Batu Maung on Penang Island. It will be the second bridge to link the island to the mainland after Penang Bridge.

The total length of the RM4.5 billion bridge is 24 km and will become the longest bridge in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. China Harbour Engineering Co Ltd (CHEC) expected to start work on the second Penang bridge in November 2007 for completion in 2011, but it had to be postponed for completion in May 2012, as the construction started late in November 2008, due to Umno-owned United Engineers Malaysia Berhads demand for a higher contract price. Second Penang bridge: 'UEM making outrageous demands'

UEM Builders Bhd has been making outrageous demands for financial assistance for the construction of the second Penang bridge, a state assemblyman charged today.

And the federal government is bowing to this government-linked company, said Sim Tze Tzin, Pantai Jerejak PKR state assemblyman.

He said the matter came to light after a whistle-blower produced a confidential letter from UEM to the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) soon after Pakatan Rakyat took over Penang two years ago.

Sim, who showed the letter to reporters in Parliament, said the letter, dated Aug 8, 2007, was signed by UEM chief executive officer Ahmad Pardas Senin and was addressed to EPU's director-general Dr Sulaiman Mahmod.

Sim said the contents of the letter revealed, among other things, that UEM has asked for financial assistance to the tune ! of RM22 billion to build the bridge although the actual cost of the project is only RM4 billion.

"This is a very outrageous demand and the federal government has complied with it. We are afraid that the federal government would blindly agree to all other kinds of assistance requested by UEM, he said.

"The letter is genuine. So far, any request from UEM has been complied with by the federal government," he added.

In the letter, UEM has also asked for a concession period of 45 years, including seeking government soft loan and grant.

Something 'amiss'

According to Sim, UEM has also requested that the toll rate be fixed at RM9.40 for the second Penang bridge. It also wants the toll price for the first bridge, currently at RM7, be increased to RM9.40, with the maximum tagged at RM11.50. This price structure will go on till 2051.

The toll collection is expected to amount to RM7 billion.

But Sim said the concession for the first bridge expires in 2018 and so why did the letter state that it (toll price) will go on until 2051?

He said UEM had also asked the government to scrap the 20% discount for the Touch 'n Go cards.

"Lately, the government had announced it would abolish this discount, which goes to show that what the letter had stated is true. But due to public pressure, the government backed down and said the discount would only be for Penangites.

"Last week, the prime minister has said the toll price for the second bridge will be at RM9.40. Now, we are worried if the government had given in to UEM's demand," said Sim.

He added that there is something amiss in the second Penang bridge project, as the federal government is providing a huge amount of financial assistance to UEM. -- Free Malaysia Today, 22 June 2010

Police officer transferred for telling victim to go back to China

KUALA LUMPUR - Police have taken immediate action to transfer an investigating officer from the Kepong Police Station who was said to have scolded a female snatch theft victim who could not speak the national language.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief DCP Datuk Muhammad Sabtu Osman said the officer concerned was now assigned to administrative duty while waiting for the outcome of the investigation being carried out.

On August 28, a Chinese woman had gone to lodge a report on a snatch theft case involving her at the police station and claimed that she was scolded by the investigating officer who also asked her to return to China.

Consequently, the woman had lodged a police report at the same police station this morning.

Muhammad Sabtu said he would ensure that the case would be investigated fairly and in a transparent manner, and would not protect any police personnel found to have committed any misconduct. – Bernama

Paderi O-Young: Homoseksual bukan dosa dan bukan penyakit

Paderi O-Young Wen Feng
O-Young Wen Feng

Paderi Homoseksual: Pemuda PAS Wilayah desak kerajaan nyatakan pendirian

Tackling racism in Malaysia

Dato' Mohd.Ariff Sabri bin Hj. Abdul Aziz

For the past few days I have written several articles about racism in Malaysia. My objective is to see the extent of racism in our country. My report is, racism is extensive and it exists openly and subtly. We see things in our respective race-blinkered lenses. Every Malaysian has his quotient of ethnicity. We have to learn to live with this fact. We can't purge our Malay-ness, our Chinese-ness or our Indian-ness that are in us.

But as long as our racism is not allowed to forcefully prevail onto another race's domain, it is all right. Or as long as it's not reflected in our daily interactions with people of other race, that is ok.

Which leads me to this conclusion. If we were to rely on human voluntariness to expel racism, we are bound to fail. I now believe that we require explicit laws which outlaw racism. We have to simply outlaw policies, rules, regulations that promote racism and discrimination. We have to outlaw all political parties that adopt race, religion or culture as their political foundations from competing in general elections. Only political parties that reflect the proportional racial mix of this country are allowed to participate in general elections.

Hence Barisan Nasional cannot contest in elections unless its candidates are 60% Malays, 30% Chinese and 10% Indians and others. Barisan Rakyat cannot contest in general elections unless its candidates are similarly arranged. This way ensures inclusiveness of all Malaysian races. Maybe, this can start Malaysia on the road to a two-party system.

Racism becomes a problem when its translated out into the open as a social policy. Rules, regulations and policies that seek to discriminate others on the basis of their racial background skin colour, religion, culture and language are racism. When you see a sign board that says dogs and Chinese are not allowed here- that is racism because it discriminates t! he Chine se on account of his ethnicity. If Christopher Wan didn't make it to IGP because he is Chinese that is discrimination.

If I were to view Chinese as devilishly cunning, skilled, powerful and therefore evil, I am being a racist. If I were to see Malays and others as subhuman, beastly, and inclined to immoral acts, I am also being racist in my attitude. My focus is either someone is evil or inferior because of his racial background. Hence the Chinese is evil because he is greedy, wants everything, our wealth, our women, our children. The Malays are evil because they are lazy, violent and are interested in stealing our women. We adopt these views to justify our treatment of these people.

We justify excluding Chinese from political power because they are inherently evil, cunning, manipulative, greedy etc. we justify excluding Malays because they are lazy, incompetent, less humanlike, etc.

Racism is simply unqualified hatred of one race on another based on skin colour, language, religion, physical appearance and so forth. Racism takes place when one race views another as genetically inferior and having less human attributes. Hence when someone says, Malays are inherently lazy because of genetic reasons and because of that not qualified to participate in commerce, be senior executives and so forth, that is racism. When someone says, the other is a lazy bump and hasn't got good work ethics because he is Malay that is racism. When someone says, TNB is tiu na bu because the workers there are mostly Malays, that is racism.

The basis for such hatred and anger or the only reason explaining the loathing is another person's racial background, skin colour, culture and religion.

There is open and subtle racism. Among Malays, their racism is easily discernible as it is commonly held, that the institutions before us are all embodiment of Malay racism. By institutions, I mean and define them to be public institutions. A restrictiv! e defini tion makes the concept, operational. This allows us to exclude having to discuss a wider field. As Malays dominate in public institutions, whatever actions these institutions take, are taken as representing the latent racism of Malays that operate at personal levels.

When Siti Inshah Mansor abused non Malays because of their ethnic background, that is racism. But what if Siti Inshah Mansor was verbally abusive because the students were vandals or were gangster-like, can she be classified as racist? Her choice of words were unfortunate but were her actions prompted by the students' different racial background?

The other races are racist too. In non public institutions, discrimination against the Malays is widely practised. This is subtle racism. The capable Malay is often bypassed in terms of promotion in Chinese owned companies. Malays are suited to PR work only, arranging end of year dinner parties, soliciting GROs for the boss, ordering RM 3000 a bowl shark's fin soup for the taikor, organizing sporting activities etc. The technical stuff?- that's off limits.

Accessibility to supply sources is often restrictive to Malay businessmen. The retailing and wholesale businesses are practically off limits to Malays. Having dominance in these areas, surrendering accessibility is almost unheard of.

In other words, business policies define Malays as inferior people and therefore discriminated against.

The irony is racism in non public institutions is often disguised behind the concept of meritocracy, suitability, capabilities, efficiency and so forth. Hence its often bandied around, that because of commercial dictates we want Mandarin or Cantonese speaking candidates. Oh, the Malays are disqualified because they don't have good work ethics. Come on- very often the work requirement in the relevant fields does not require a qualification in rocket science.

TNB is lambasted and verbally abused and assaulted not because! its man ned by Malays but because it is inefficient. See how clever the racism is disguised under the concept of efficiency.

Because the test is to look at the non Malays who are chosen to perform the tasks which are said to require meritocratic qualifications. A Chinese is equally inept at speaking and writing in English, he is equally lazy, equally mediocre in certain areas but because, the shots are made by non Malay bosses, the Chinese will get the job.

While the racism of the Malay appeared to be an accepted fact, mere mention of the possibility that a Chinese can be a racist too, unearth vehement protests. To me, the Chinese is equally capable of self denial as do the Malays. So don't come down on us with all those patronizing clichs of what givesyour caliber is skin deep and so forth. Spare us the nausea please. Perhaps its your own racism that prevents you from acknowledging your own prejudices.

Hence we come to the sobering realization that racism is alive and pervasive in our society.

Have anyone given a thought as to why the majority of maid abuse cases involved Chinese families against Indonesian maids? Could it be that the Indonesian maids are looked upon as the Malay species and therefore subhuman and inferior? They are fit to eat with dogs, eat leftovers etc. And that all the cruelty and abuses imposed on them are but vengeance by the Chinese on Malays to compensate for their own perceived racist victimization?

When Namewe asks didn't you read, who made Malaysia rich can be translated into we Malays owe the Chinese a living. That is precisely the basis of the behavior which Namewee exhibited when he hurled all the abusive and expletives on the TNB workers in Muar. Banana sucking Malays are just peons, security guards whose primary function is to slave it out so that people like Namewee will not experience blackouts. Malays are fit to be jagas, security guards policemen and soldiers ensuring this country is s! afe so t hat people like Namewee can make this country rich. What gave people like Namewee the right to speak in such arrogant manner to salary earning workers?
