THE BALFOUR DECLARATION
The Origins of the Arab-Israeli Conflict
By Jonathan Schneer

by Tom Segev

Lord and Lady Balfour of Burleigh

On November 2, 1917, the British government expressed its sympathy with Jewish Zionist aspirations and announced that it would use its best endeavors to facilitate the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people. The announcement came in a letter from Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Lord Rothschild, the unofficial leader of the British Jewish community. The Balfour declaration became the diplomatic foundation stone of the state of Israel; it is considered the original sin by Israels opponents.

In this comprehensive study, richly documented by diplomatic correspondence, Jonathan Schneer concludes that the famous declaration seems to have just missed the sidetrack of history: in contrast to a common myth, Britains support for Zionism was not the result of an inevitable process. In fact, as Schneer reveals, shortly after Balfours promise to the Jews, the British government offered the Ottoman Empire the opportunity to keep Palestine and to continue to fly the Turkish flag over it.

Schneer, a professor at Georgia Techs School of History, Technology and Society, is a talented writer. Describing the British Empires haughtiness, he takes his readers inside the Foreign Office in Whitehall, walks them along the marble floors and among the columns, pointing out the grand red-carpeted staircase outlined by polished gleaming banisters, arched windows, glowing chandeliers and elaborately patterned ceilings and walls.! Schneer says about the men who worked there that when it came to measuring themselves against visitors, no matter how distinguished and no matter where from, they suffered few insecurities.

Chaim Weizmann, the leading spokesman for Zionism in Britain, must have felt ill at ease when he entered those awesome corridors of power. A Russian-born chemist, he began to solicit support among the British soon after he settled in Manchester in 1904. He could hardly speak English in those days: his first contacts with British officials were conducted in French. But if he was taken aback by the snobbery and coolness that awaited him at Whitehall, he made sure to conceal his uneasiness, acting as if he commanded an almost omnipotent power: World Jewry. The British believed he did.

Obviously there was no Jewish power controlling world affairs, but Weizmann successfully pretended that the Jews were in fact turning the wheels of history. For once, the anti-Semitic image of the Jews proved useful they were believed to be so maliciously dangerous that one would do best to acquire them as allies rather than as enemies.

Beginning in 1916, the British hoped that in exchange for their support of Zionism the Jews would help to finance the growing expenses of the Great War, which at that time was not going very well for Britain. More important, policy makers in the Foreign Office believed that Jews could persuade the United States to join the war. In this sense, as Schneer points out, the decision to issue the Balfour declaration was based upon a misconception.

But fear of the Jews was only one part of the story. The other part, which Schneer neglects to explore, was the genuine admiration many of Britains leaders, including Prime Minister David Lloyd George and Balfour himself, felt for the Jews and their history. These men were deeply religious Christian Zionists. They had grown up on the Bible; the Holy Land was their ! spiritua l home. Modern Zionism, they believed, would fulfill a divine promise and resettle the Jews in the land of their ancient fathers.

As part of this context, Schneer expertly analyzes the passionate and fascinating controversy between non-Zionist and Zionist Jews that preceded the Balfour declaration. The Zionists spoke in the name of Jewish nationhood; their Jewish opponents denied that Jews even constituted a separate nation.

The Balfour declaration used deliberately vague language. The term national home was chosen in order to minimize the Zionist dream, that is, to make Palestine an actual Jewish state. The Arabs, whose civil and religious (not national and political) rights were not to be prejudiced, as the declaration put it, were referred to only as existing non-Jewish communities.

According to Schneer, the Arabs were as invisible to the early Zionists as Africans had been to Boers in South Africa, or Indians to the French and English colonists in North America. But in fact, some of the first Zionists were well aware of the Arabs vehement objection to their national aspirations. As early as 1899, Theodore Herzl himself, the father of political Zionism, corresponded with the Arab mayor of Jerusalem, Yusuf Dia al-Khalidi, who urged him to find a national home for the Jews somewhere else in the world. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict seems to have had its origins at the very beginning of Zionism.

Many of the British diplomatic papers Schneer examines were brilliantly written. At times it seems that these dispatches and reports, rather than analyses of foreign policy, were the exercises of frustrated poets and writers, educated at Eton and Oxford, who hoped for posterity in the Public Record Office. Much of what they wrote led nowhere, though Schneer elaborates on their maneuvers at great length.

He details, for instance, the correspondence between British officials and the Arabs, as well as a secret diplomatic sche! me of 19 16 known as the Sykes-Picot Agreement, which would have partitioned much of the Ottoman Empire, including Palestine, between Britain and France. These initiatives have little significance today, except perhaps with regard to the Arab contention that the British had promised Palestine to the Arabs before they promised it to the Jews.

Schneer suggests that the promises given to the Arabs were too vague and contradictory to evaluate. Still, the way he reveals the characters behind the diplomatic papers, bringing them to life, makes his book particularly enjoyable.

Take Britains magnificent, if abortive, effort to detach the Ottoman Empire from the Central Powers. The idea was to orchestrate what would today be called regime change in Turkey. The new rulers would then make a separate peace with Britain, retain Palestine and get a handsome bribe for themselves millions of American dollars. The central figure in this drama was a man named Basil Zaharoff, later Sir Basil, an Ottoman-born arms dealer and self-made diplomat whose corruption, pomposity and eccentricity British policy makers could not resist.

The Balfour declaration thus finds its place among a multitude of fruitless schemes and indulgent fantasies, except, of course, that in this case, surprisingly, the British by and large kept their word. For at least two decades they allowed the Zionist movement to bring hundreds of thousands of Jewish immigrants into Palestine, and these new arrivals set up hundreds of settlements including several towns, as well as the political, economic, military and cultural infrastructure of the future state of Israel. But if Israels existence originated with the British, so did the Palestinians tragedy. The Balfour declaration was only the opening chapter of a still unfinished story.

PM wants full investigation into 'doa' issue

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak wants the police and Penang Islamic Religious Council to conduct a full investigation into the alleged use of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's name, replacing the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's, in the "doa" after the Friday sermon at some mosques in the state recently.

He said action must be taken against those responsible under the existing rules.

"I ask that this matter be fully investigated; who did it... as the delivering of Friday sermons is determined by the state Islamic Religious Council and people are not allowed to use our own script," he said at the handing of Raya goodies for the Malaysian Armed Forces in Pekan, Pahang today.

Penang Umno liaison chief Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was this week reported to have revealed the use of Lim's name in the "doa" recited after the Friday sermon at some mosques in the Permatang Pauh and Jelutong areas recently.

"What happened was clearly against the state Islamic Religious Council's ruling and this should be investigated by the relevant authorities, and action taken in accordance with the stipulated procedures," said Najib.

Letter & Opinion From Joe Public

UMNO, why do you keep pushing me away?

  • I dont remember ever buying Utusan Malaysia. Judging by yesterdays headlines in Utusan Nama Guan Eng Ganti Agong, I doubt I will change my position and start reading this UMNO controlled newspaper. In my mind almost all the MSM in Malaysia does not meet the standard of independence and responsible journalism but Utusan Malaysia has proven that it is probably worth less than a toilet paper. The only reason I knew about this when I saw the headlines at my regular news vendor and after watching further propaganda on TV3.

  • We must accept that without proof we cannot deny or admit such a thing happened. However based on logical assessment and the majority Malaysian mentality of the religion of Islam, it does not make any sense at all. When I saw the news on TV3 where it was shown that 3 old man was interviewed on they claim that they heard while listening the Friday Prayers sermon, I sat back and think very hard on what is the probable thing that has happened.

  • It is a standard ruling where all Friday sermons in every state in Malaysia are regulated. The content is standardized in every state by the respective State Religious Authorities. If indeed what is claimed by the 3 man interviewed by TV3 news as true than it only means that some coordinated effort has been engineered by a third party to discredit LGE. Common sense will show that LGE will not dare to get involved in a sensitive matter like religion in Malaysia. He is not exactly a green thumb politician. MAIP has also denied that they have given out such instructions to replace Agongs name with LGE.

  • The question that popped my mind is could it be it is a coordinated political play by UMNO? Maybe they get a few pro UMNO khatib in Penang to purposely deliver a sermon that has been modified in order to elevate the political game in Penang. If indeed this is the case, what are the probabilities that it is done by people other t! han thos e who are link to UMNO? I am not making an accusation but merely asking people to think rationally.

  • In any case, I also wonder sometime if it is wrong for a Muslim to DOA for the well being of a non-Muslim. I searched the Malaysian e-fatwa
but did not find anything relevant. I found a discussion portal on religion which suggest that it is a non issue but then we would not know for sure because the discussion portal is a public portal which are not limited to scholars. I did not manage to find any specifics on my favourite site Islam-online other than the DOA for non Muslim parents. If we accept that all mankind are children and grandchildren of Adam and Hawa (Adam and Eve) then I would like to ask those who says that it is an offence to Doa for the non Muslim on why it is so?

  • My expectation from UMNO is for them to show us the way for better living. The weak reaction of the DPM on the Kulai HM statements shows very poorly of them. In an opposition state, I expect UMNO to show that they are better and they can deliver and able to compete for the peoples trust in an environment where they no longer have power.

  • Right now that is not happening. What they are doing is merely continue to divide the people along religion and ethnic lines. This is sad. Do they really think they can win votes this way? Dont they realize that people voted them out because they are fed up with their ways? I wonder why UMNO is not able to do the right thing to regain my trust.

How the RM9 billion hole was left to the taxpayers

In seven years, Tajuddin Ramli turned a profitable airline company that had more than half a billion ringgit in cash reserves into a company that was RM8 billion in deficit. In March 2007, the head of the CCID, Ramli Yusuff, wrote to the Prime Minister, going into great detail about what happened. But it was Ramli and not Tajuddin who was dragged before the courts on various fabricated charges -- where he was acquitted without his defence being called.

DAP questions DPMs reluctance to slam racist remarks

    By Yow Hong Chieh

Tony Pua questions Muhyidin's reluctance to condemn racist remarks uttered by school principals Reuters pic
The DAP questioned today Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassins reluctance to condemn racist remarks uttered by a school principal, adding an investigating task force would just complicate a straightforward case.

Its national publicity secretary Tony Pua also called the education ministers decision to set up a task force to investigate Johor school principal Siti Inshah Mansors allegedly racist remarks an afterthought.

The question is, why is he, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, so reluctant to condemn such remarks and warn others in the Education Ministry from ever doing the same or face the harshest of consequences?

His action, or in this case, inaction, has further damaged the 1 Malaysia concept proposed by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak to promote national unity, Pua said in a statement.

The Petaling Jaya Utara MP said it would have been simple for Muhyiddin to determine if Siti Inshah had uttered racist words given the tens of witnesses present and the police report filed after the fact, and accused the Umno deputy president of complicating the probe.

Pua said that, while it was fair for the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra principal to receive a thorough investigation, the emphasis by Muhyiddin that the probe will involve several agencies was a clear attempt to unnecessarily prolong the investigation.

[This] despite the obvious fact that Siti Inshah has apologised to the students for the offence, he said.

Muhyiddin yesterday directed Education director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom to set up a committee to investigate the matter. Alimuddin had earlier said it was a misunderstanding that had been resolved in a failed effort to placate angry parents.

The police are currently invest! igating the case under section 504 of the Penal Code for provocation which carries a maximum imprisonment of two years, a fine or both.

A total of 20 complaints have been lodged with the authorities.

Sit Inshah had reportedly made the derogatory remarks during the launch of the schools Merdeka celebrations earlier this week.

Chinese students are not needed here and can return to China or Foon Yew schools. For the Indian students, the prayer string tied around their neck and wrist makes them look like dogs because only dogs are tied like that, Siti Inshah was quoted as saying in at least one police report.

Pua added that it was telling that Muhyiddins investigative task force had not been set a deadline to present its findings when a week would have been enough to determine the outcome.

He said this was proof that the Education Ministry was not serious about getting to the bottom of the issue quickly, and claimed the task force was just a way to placate angry parents and upset Malaysians while the ministry buys time for itself to resolve the issue after the first attempt backfired.

However, he said the ridiculous precedent of setting up a high-level task force to investigate such allegations may create a tidal wave of such task forces now that the same offence was reported to have been committed by a principal in Kedah.

A Kedah school head was yesterday accused of racism for allegedly telling her Chinese pupils to return to China.

The Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bukit Selambau headmistress was said to have accused the Chinese pupils of being insensitive towards their Muslim peers by eating in the school compound during the fasting month of Ramadan last Friday, and ordered them to return to China if they could not respect the culture of other races.

Will the Education Minister announce another taskforce to investigate these claims? Will more taskforces be set up as more such offences get reported? Pua asked.

He also called on Muhyiddin to demonstrate his! commitm ent to 1 Malaysia by condemning racist remarks outright and warning all teachers and principals that those found guilty of uttering them will be punished most severely, including being sacked from their job.

If Tan Sri Muhyiddin still refuses to take quick action on the above, then it is imperative for the Prime Minister himself to take all necessary steps to hold together his fragile 1 Malaysia brainchild, if the concept still means anything to him, he said.

Sekiranya Kita Ikhlas Memberi Mahasiswa Peluang Memilih

Refleksi dan analisa seorang mahasiswa tentang perbicaraan sama ada hak dan kebebasan mahasiswa berpolitik harus dipulangkan kepada mahasiswa.

Tan Sri Ibrahim Abu Shah, mantan UiTM

Tan Sri Ibrahim Abu Shah, mantan Naib Chancellor UiTM

UMNO and MACC ‘strangling’ each other

    By Pak Bui

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) head prosecutor Abdul Razak Musa made a humiliating spectacle of himself in front of the coroner’s court during the hearing into the death of Teoh Beng Hock. His self-abasement is a terrible setback for UMNO’s efforts to regain votes in the next general election.

The MACC has plumbed the depths of public mistrust, and in so doing has reflected badly on its masters in UMNO. Public anger towards the MACC will also be directed against UMNO, since Malaysians of all races understand that the MACC behaves as a political weapon, wielded by UMNO and its allies against their opponents.

The MACC’s move to attack celebrated Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand appears to have backfired. Abdul Razak Musa was ill-prepared, and cracked under the intense pressure on him to cast doubt on the Thai doctor’s findings.

Abdul Razak inexplicably mixed up ‘dead’ and ‘unconscious’. He blurted out irrational statements and questions, drawing laughs and jeers from the public gallery, and even from the coroner himself. He asserted that a man could “strangle himself” (as Pakatan Rakyat leader Anwar Ibrahim was said to have given himself a black eye during his persecution a decade ago). He also insisted a man would weigh more when unconscious than conscious.

In short, he brought shame to the Malaysian legal profession, and to our nation as a whole. He also brought shame to his masters in UMNO. UMNO and MACC are now caught in a fatal embrace that is suffocating both institutions. UMNO has lost votes, while the MACC has lost credibility in the midst of this mutual strangulation.

Only a change in government can improve the MACC and the UMNO party itself. And any rehabilitation efforts will mean wholesale reforms and changes of staff: it will take years to repair the damage inflicted by UMNO warlords’ interference.

Lawyers’ duty to search for truth

Razak refused to speak to the press after the hearing, realising perhaps that his catastrophic performance had done more harm than good for UMNO apologists, in the shambolic coroner’s investigation.

The MACC’s Abdul Razak and Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail have made a mockery of the process of justice in Teoh’s inquest. The Attorney-General tried to submit a so-called ‘suicide note’ nine months after the inquiry began. Teoh’s family members have told the press the note is a forgery. The prospect of a Royal Commission into his death appears ever more distant.

Abdul Gani has also supervised the removal of a Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) from Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy trial, following reports of a sexual affair between the female DPP and the prosecution’s star witness, Saiful Bukhari. There has been irreparable harm done to the credibility of the trial, with the potential breach in confidentiality of the prosecution’s information.

The MACC, the Attorney-General’s Office, and their masters in UMNO, have made Malaysia, our judiciary and legal profession a laughing stock. Our worldwide reputation now matches that of the Singaporean legal profession, infamous for its meek subservience to the executive.

Will these senior government lawyers’ cynical manipulations now be seen a role model for young Malaysian lawyers? These wealthy MACC and government lawyers behave like highly paid vassals of the ruling class within UMNO. The damage wrought by their contempt for the justice system is another example of how UMNO’s misrule is strangling Malaysia and her institutions.

The irony is that the legal profession has a rich and noble history. Lawyers pledge to further the cause of Truth and Justice, two of the greatest Platonic ideals.

The profession has been illuminated by intellectual giants like Francis Bacon and Lord Denning. Lawyers have also found an affinity with politics, perhaps because some of the better lawyers have always striven to represent their countrymen as well as their clients.

Famous political figures trained as lawyers include Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Barrack Obama, and closer to home, Baru Bian and See Chee How of the PKR, and Chong Chien Jen, Wong Ho Leng, Karpal Singh and Lim Kit Siang of the DAP.

Ambiga Sreenivasan, former Bar Council president, and recipient of the US Secretary of State’s award for International Women of Courage, as well as human rights lawyer Edmund Bon, among others, have earned Malaysians’ respect for their public service, and for advocating reform of the judiciary and freedom from oppression.

Edmund Bon has even shown defiant iconoclasm, by saying the Bar Council has lost its momentum in the national fight for justice, and has grown toothless and lethargic in the past few years. He drew plenty of flak from fellow lawyers in the process.

Unfortunately, Abdul Razak and Abdul Gani Patail, and examples of our local Sarawakian species such as state legal representative JC Fong, appear far less independent than we would expect our lawyers to be, and far more slavish to our political elite.

    Doctors and lawyers

The local medical profession has also lost credibility, over its kowtowing to UMNO.

One example was the heavily criticised post-mortem reports by local pathologists on the violent deaths of M Kugan Ananthan and Teoh Beng Hock – seen by most Malaysians as victims of brutality by the police and the MACC, both institutions displaying a crude bias towards UMNO’s interests.

Another example was the odd announcement by the president of the Malaysian Society of Colorectal Surgeons, that sodomy can take

place even if an examining doctor finds no evidence of this. This public statement was hardly seen as helpful and objective, in the politically charged trial of Anwar Ibrahim.

Anton Chekhov wrote: “Doctors are the same as lawyers; the only difference is that lawyers merely rob you, whereas doctors rob you and kill you too.”

What is the way forward for Malaysia’s professions to reclaim their credibility, after the chokehold placed on them by UMNO and its servants?

Zahid Hamidi Tak Takut Dosa Sebar Fitnah Dalam Bulan Puasa

Anwar: Isu khutbah fitnah terbaru Umno, Ogos 20, 10 4:55pm

    > Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Keadilan) views with grave concern the continuing occurrence of incidents where racial hatred is incited, the latest being the statement made by the Johor school headmaster during a school assembly.
    >
    >
    >
    > It is unacceptable to suggest, as stated by the Department of Education that it considers the matter closed and that the matter has been settled between the said principal and the students and/or their parents.

    > This incident has been widely publicized and is a matter that affects the whole nation. It is also irresponsible to suggest that it is merely a misunderstanding.

    > Keadilan demands that the said Principal be suspended pending an investigation and if found true that she did indeed make such remarks, she should be immediately removed.

    > These recurring incidents of incitement of racial hatred and racial insults are a manifestation of a bigger problem i.e the Barisan Nasional Government’s tacit encouragement of incitement of racism and lack of real political will to curtail such behaviour.

    > As long as draconian laws such as the ISA and Sedition Act exists and used to stifle healthy discussions and openly allowing extremist groups to continue inciting racism with impunity, this problem will fester.

    > Keadilan's view is that statements such as that made by the Johor principal are not isolated incidents and must be dealt with a holistic and comprehensive approach.

    > Our answer is to provide a genuine multiracial political paradigm based on principles of fairness, respecting human rights, democracy and justice to all and to reject race based politics.

    > Further, we and Pakatan Rakyat are committed to the enactment of a Race Relations Act to deal with such instances of incitement of hatred, to provide mechanisms for resolution of such problems when they occur and to safeguard unity and harmony of the rakyat.

    Saving Sarawak from corrupted leaders

By Joseph Tawie, Free Malaysia Today

KUCHING: Pakatan Rakyat wants to gain a foothold in Sarawak to “save the state from corrupted leaders”. It is gearing up for the fight in the coming state polls, confident that it can do better this time around.

Not wasting time, Pakatan will hold a one-day meeting next Thursday in Kuala Lumpur to draw up its battle plan to capture the Land of the Hornbills.

Said PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution: “Leaders of Pakatan will meet and discuss only one agenda – the preparation for the coming Sarawak election.”

“We expect to discuss the list of candidates, seat allocation, manifesto, logistics, strategy and various other issues,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

He said he was satisfied with PKR election preparation, adding: “We are ready now to enter the fight.”

On seat allocation, Saifuddin said the overlapping of claims was only minimal and hoped the matter could be thrashed out at the Kuala Lumpur meeting.

“Unlike previous elections, this coming election will see one-to-one fight against the Barisan Nasional in the 71 constituencies,” he said.

“We are confident we can do better this time,” he said.

PKR’s head of strategy bureau, Tian Chua, who was present, said the people of Sarawak should vote wisely because their choice was important.

“Pakatan Rakyat is coming to Sarawak not only to try gain a foothold, but also to save the state from corrupted leaders who have been in power for so long,” he said.

"Most misunderstood" Ronnie Liu: No more letters of support

KLANG (Malaysian Insider) — Embattled DAP leader Ronnie Liu, who is caught in a widening scandal involving issuing of “support letters” for business contracts and other unsavoury allegations, is feeling isolated in Selangor as party leaders shun him.

But the 52-year-old party veteran has vowed to fight on and even contest the state party elections later this year despite admitting to making mistakes and receiving a severe reprimand in the scandal.

He cut a lonely and vulnerable figure at a DAP function Thursday night to honour Everest climbers N. Mohanadas and M. Magendran who were recently made Datuks by the Penang state government.

Party secretary general and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng together with other top national and Selangor state leaders attended the event but some of them avoided Liu like a leper.

Liu (picture) came late and alone but as he climbed up the stage, some DAP leaders aligned with Guan Eng were noticeably uncomfortable with him now that two party leaders, veteran Dr Chen Man Hin and Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi have openly urged the Pandamaran assemblyman, for all intent and purposes, to resign largely because his involvement in and handling of the “support letters” controversy has tarnished the party’s image.

“I am the most misunderstood leader in the DAP,” Liu later told The Malaysian Insider in a late night interview at a veteran DAP leader’s house-cum- restaurant in Telok Gong, Klang.

In between slurping porridge Liu, the DAP leader privately regarded as the Taiko of Selangor, the biggest and richest state in the Pakatan Rakyat stable, poured out his heart defending himself against accusations of alleged corrupt practices, his friendship and now acrimony with Selangor DAP leader and Speaker Teng Chang Kim and why he would not resign as demanded by party leaders.

While party strongman Lim Kit Siang and Guan Eng are silent on Liu and the support letters issue, the behaviour of many DAP leaders to avoid him indicate he is being ostracised in the party and is not welcome anymore in the DAP’s inner circle as was the case before the scandal broke.

“Liu would fall on the sword if Kit Siang asked, he was such a loyalist and by extension that loyalty extends to Guan Eng,” a party insider said.

But the question is, are Liu’s days numbered in the DAP? Is his former benefactor Kit Siang and the new power broker Guan Eng turning against him?

“Misunderstood because I tried to solve my problems by myself, I did not burden the party leaders, the party elders. I should have shared the problems and challenges of administration with them, consulted them, kept them, informed.

“I thought I could deal with all matters arising like the support letters. I was over confident,” Liu said as explanation for the way the support letters controversy has turned out.

“I should have shared my burden with others. Now I am being unfairly targeted,” he said. “I am new to power; we all are new to power. We have a steep learning curve. We made mistakes...I made mistakes,” he said.

In various reports, Liu had either said he had signed the letters or that his signature was forged while others like Klang municipal councillor Tee Boon Hock admitted to signing such letters to help people get contracts, including his son. The DAP sacked Tee on Aug 6.

Liu also faced the party disciplinary committee on August 12 but was let off with a reprimand, an unpopular decision going by public comments on the Internet.

The committee saw the “Liu issue” as a case of bad management, not corruption or bad governance and urged him to improve himself.

But Dr Chen and Ooi disagreed and upset by the shift in public perception of the DAP, whose sterling reputation for good governance is tarnished, want Liu to more or less resign to salvage the party image.

Liu however disagreed with the view that he has to resign. He said Ooi is too influenced by Internet comments which are biased and controlled by the DAP’s political enemies, the Barisan Nasional (BN) specifically.

“I know public perception is important but the truth is also important and truth is behind me,” he said. “The truth is I did my best to serve the people, I made mistakes and now I am making amends. No more letters of support,” he said.

“I have said I will improve myself. The disciplinary committee wanted me to improve myself and I am working on it. Give me a chance,” Liu said. “I am a party loyalist, a diehard.”

“I went through hell...no more support letters,” he added.

Liu also refuted allegations as executive committee member for local government that he issued massage parlour licenses, had links with gangsters and had abandoned DAP allies for new friends after coming to power, mostly ex-MCA and Umno people.

“Massage parlour licenses were frozen in 2006 by the previous government and remain frozen. No new license has been issued,” he said adding however licenses for reflexology centres were issued but these are legitimate enterprises.

“There are illegal massage parlours and have no licenses to operate,” he said, dismissing allegations that the reflexology centres were fronts. He also refuted allegations the centres and illegal massage parlours were “protected” and no action is being taken against them.

He blamed political enemies for the many attempts to tarnish his name. “I saw all these coming, I wished I had shared my fears with party leaders but I did not. I thought I could handle it on my own,” he said. “This is my character.”

His relationship with Teng has also soured and they are political rivals now.

“I was instrumental in helping him, advance his career, getting him selected as DAPSY head, assemblyman but now this...he is a rival,” Liu said.

“I joined the party earlier than Teng in 1980,” he added by way of comparison.

The controversy comes at a time when the Selangor DAP, like other states, is holding state DAP committee election and is seeing a major tussle between various faction leaders.

Teng has gathered to his banner all the anti-Liu factions while the pro-Guan Eng factions in the state, of which Liu is a nominal member, is arrayed against him.

Liu said he will definitely contest in the election in December and is aware that leaders are likely to field their menu, or preferred list of candidates.

“I don’t want to say I will field a menu but I will definitely contest in the election,” he said.

    The Family in Ramadan

    Praise be to Allah.

It is one of the blessings of Allah to the Muslim that He enables him to fast in Ramadaan and to spend its nights in prayer. It is a month in which good deeds are multiplied and people are raised in status, when Allah frees some people from the Fire. So the Muslim should strive to make the most of this month and the goodness it brings; he should hasten to spend his life in worship. How many people have been deprived of this month because of sickness, death or misguidance.

The Muslim must make the most of his time during this month; he has an unavoidable duty towards his children, to raise them well and bring them up properly, to urge them to do all kinds of goodness and make them get used to that because the child will grow up in the manner to which his parents makes him get accustomed.

During these blessed days, the father and mother have a role to play in making the most of this time, and we can offer parents the following advice:

1 Checking on the childrens fasting and encouraging those who fall short in this regard.

2 Reminding them about the real nature of fasting, and that it is not just giving up food and drink, but it is a means of attaining taqwa (piety), and that it is an opportunity for sins to be forgiven and expiated.
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ascended the minbar and said: Ameen, Ameen, Ameen. It was said to him, O Messenger of Allah, why did you do that? He said, Jibreel said to me, May Allah rub his nose in the dust, that person who Ramadaan comes and his sins are not forgiven, and I said, Ameen. Then he said, May Allah rub his nose in the dust, that person who lives to see his parents grow old, one or both of them, but he does not ent! er Parad ise, and I said, Ameen. Then he said, May Allah rub his nose in the dust, that person in whose presence you are mentioned and he does not send blessings upon you, and I said, Ameen.
    Narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah, 1888; al-Tirmidhi, 3545; Ahmad, 7444; Ibn Hibbaan, 908. See Saheeh al-Jaami, 3501.

3 Teaching them the etiquette and rulings on eating, such as eating with the right hand from what is directly in front of them; reminding them that extravagance is haraam and is harmful to the body.

4 Not letting them spend too long on eating iftaar so that they miss praying Maghrib in congregation.

5 Reminding them about the situation of the poor and destitute who cannot find even a mouthful of food to quench the fires of hunger; reminding them of the situation of those who have migrated or are fighting in jihad for the sake of Allah in all places.

6 These gatherings offer an opportunity to bring relatives together and uphold the ties of kinship. This custom still exists in some countries, and it is an opportunity to reconcile and mend broken ties between relatives.

7 Helping the mother to prepare the food, and to clean up and keep the food fit for eating.

8 Reminding them to pray qiyaam (taraweeh) and to prepare for it by not eating too much and to get ready in time to perform the prayer in the mosque.

9 With regard to suhoor, the parents should remind the family of the barakah (blessing) of suhoor and that it gives a person the strength to fast.

10 Allowing enough time before Fajr prayer so that those who have not prayed Witr may do so, and so that those who have delayed their prayer until the end of the night may pray, and so that each person may make duaa to his Lord as he wishes.

11 Paying attention to praying Fajr on time in congregation in the mosque, for those who are required to do so. We have seen many people who wake up at the end of the night to eat, then they go back to bed and neglect Fajr prayer.

12 It was the practice o! f the Pr ophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the last ten days of Ramadaan to stay up at night and wake his family. This indicates that the family should pay attention to making the most of this blessed time in doing things that are pleasing to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted. So the husband should wake his wife and children to do that which will bring them closer to their Lord.

13 There may be small children in the house who need to be encouraged to fast, so the father should urge them to get up for suhoor, and encourage them to fast by praising them and giving a reward to the one who fasts the whole month or half of it, and so on.
It was narrated that al-Rubayyi bint Muawwidh said: On the morning of Ashoora the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent word to the villages of the Ansaar saying, Whoever started out not fasting, let him not eat for the rest of the day, and whoever started the day fasting, let him fast. She said: We used to fast and make our children fast, [and take them to the mosques] and make toys for them out of wool, then if one of them cried for food we would give him that toy until iftaar.
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1859; Muslim, 1136 the words in square brackets were narrated by Muslim.
    Al-Nawawi said:
This hadeeth shows that we should train children to do acts of worship and get them used to that, but they are not accountable. Al-Qaadi said: It was narrated from Urwah that when they are able to fast it becomes obligatory upon them. This is a mistake which is disproven by the saheeh hadeeth, The Pen is lifted from three: from the child until he reaches adolescence And Allah knows best.
    Sharh Muslim, 8/14

14 If possible, the father and mother should take the family for Umrah in Ramadaan, and that is something that will benefit them in the Hereafter, themselves and their family, for Umrah during Ramadaan has the same reward as Hajj. It is better to go at the beginning of Ramadaan so as to avoid the crowds.

15 The husb! and shou ld not overburden his wife with more than she can bear of having to prepare food and sweets. Many people take this month to prepare fancy foods and drinks, and they go extremes in that. This detracts from the sweetness of this month and goes against the reason for fasting, which is to attain piety.

16 The month of Ramadaan is the month of the Quraan, so we suggest that each family gets together to read Quraan. The father should teach his family to recite Quraan and help them to understand the meanings of the verses. In the same gathering they may also read a book about the rulings and etiquette of fasting. Allah has enabled many scholars and seekers of knowledge to write books which can be used for preaching and teaching during Ramadaan; the books are divided into thirty parts, so one topic can be read each day, and this will benefit everyone.

17 They should be encouraged to spend and check on their neighbours and the needy.
It was narrated that Ibn Abbaas said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was the most generous of people, and he was at his most generous during Ramadaan when Jibreel met him. He would meet him each night and revise the Quraan with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was more generous than the blowing wind.
    Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6; Muslim, 2308.

18 The parents should prevent their families and children from staying up late at night and wasting their time in things that are of no benefit, let alone things that are haraam. For the devils among mankind are more active in this month in promoting evil things and acts of immorality to those who are fasting, during the nights of Ramadaan and during the days.

19 They should remember the familys meeting in Allahs Paradise in the Hereafter, and the great joy of meeting there under the shade of His throne. These blessed gatherings in this world and coming together to obey Allah by seeking knowledge, fasting and praying are only the means t! hat lead to attaining that happiness.

Letter & Opinion From Joe Public

Nazri: Non-Malays have the right to ask

    By Hemananthani Sivanandam, TheSun

"I certainly dont condone this. In public, you say we are 1Malaysia and then you say we are the BN and we have a spirit of our own and then later, you show that you are quarrelling. What message are you giving to the public?" he asked.

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 19, 2010): Non-Malays are not questioning the rights of Malays when they ask for what they think they deserve, Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said today.

"They are merely asking for what they think they deserve. For example, if a non-Malay student with 9As and comes from a poor family asks for a scholarship, what is wrong with that? He deserves it, and its a valid request," he said.

"So it does not make sense when people say such valid requests are questioning the rights of the Malays," he said after meeting representatives from the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Hua Zong) led by its president Pheng Yin Huah at Parliament House.

Nazri: So it does not make sense when people
say such valid requests are questioning the rights
    of the Malays.
The federation had asked for the meeting to discuss several issues, including the 1Malaysia concept mooted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.

Nazri said the 1Malaysia concept took into consideration what had been provided in the Federal Constitution. "Its clear; so what is there to fight about? We know each others privileges and our rights and we respect each other. Whats in the Constitution wont be affected by the 1Malaysia concept," he said.

Nazri stressed that it was not true that the non-Malays were questioning the Constitution, as they were only asking for what they feel they ought to have.

"Why do we have to show this guilty con! science on our part to interpret that every time (they raise such issues), it means they are questioning our rights? I dont understand!" Nazri said.

Asked to comment on the recent debates between the Barisan Nasionals two biggest coalition parties Umno and MCA over a resolution passed at the recent Chinese economic congress, the Padang Rengas MP said the squabbling did not impose confidence on the public in the spirit of 1Malaysia.

The MCA and its president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek have come under a barrage of criticism from senior cabinet ministers and Malay rights groups following the release of the congresss 13-point resolution, which included a call for the gradual reduction of the 30% bumiputra quota.

"I certainly dont condone this. In public, you say we are 1Malaysia and then you say we are the BN and we have a spirit of our own and then later, you show that you are quarrelling. What message are you giving to the public?" he asked.

"That is why, I realise now, why there is so little respect for politicians .... because they say one thing and they do another thing, and I dont blame all of you (the public), if youve got no respect for politicians.
Sadly, I belong to this group. But we will try to bring back confidence of the public to ourselves," he said.

Asked if he agreed with the resolutions passed at the economic congress on the abolition of the 30% bumiputra equity quota, Nazri merely said that genuine partnerships between the bumiputras and non-bumiputras ought to exist.

"I would like to promote a Malaysian venture. If they are asking to abolish and they want a fair share, that means its a 50-50 partnership. I would rather go for a partnership which is Malaysian in nature, bumiputra and non-bumiputra," added Nazri.

At Ringside: Dato Ramli Yusuff Acquitted For The 3rd Time!

    August 21, 2010

At Ringside: Dato Ramli Yusuff Acquitted For The 3rd Time!

    by Din Merican

My comment yesterday was just a curtain raiser. Here is my ringside account of the Dato Ramli Yusuffs acquittal by Judge S.M Komathy Suppiah.

At 4pm sharp on August 20, 2010, the KL Criminal Sessions Court Judge SM Komathy Suppiah asked Dato Ramli Yusuff to stand up and then pronounced: Dato Ramli, I find that the Prosecution has not established a prima facie case against you, your defence is not required and I hereby acquit you!

This is the last of the series of cases leveled by the Unholy Trinity of the AG Gani Patail, the IGP Musa Hassan and the MACC.

The public at the gallery clapped. The pretty Judge smiled and then retired to her chambers. Dato Ramlis friends and family members surged to him, some hugged him, others shook his hands. Tears dropped from Dato Ramlis eyes and rolled down his cheeks. Tears of joy, tears of relief, tears of gratitude to the Almighty God for having given him full vindication.

Dato Ramli walked up to thank the hands of his most eloquent counsel, the eminent Dato Seri Shafee Abdullah. Dato Ramli walked to DPP Tuan Ahmad Bache and shook his hands too. A display of the finest breed of gentleman who would thank his own prosecutor. This was the scene in court on the acquittal of Dato Ramli for the third time.

Dato Ramli walked up to thank the hands of his most eloquent counsel, the eminent Dato Seri Shafee Abdullah.

A Possible End of Trumped Charges by the Unholy Trinity

This is the last of the series of cases leveled by the Unholy Trinity of the AG Gani Patail, the IGP Musa Hassan and the! MACC. I t is very telling that despite deploying the whole of might of the most potent law enforcement agencies and supposedly the best brain in the AGs Chambers, not one of the charges leveled against Dato Ramli could stick. The charges could not stick because these were trumped up charges. These trumped up charges build from fabricated evidence was like trying to spread rotten egg on a teflon coated frying pan, it would just peel off. These fabricated charges crumbled once the facts are presented before a fair court.

The charges could not stick because these were trumped up charges.

Sessions Court Show Independence and Fairness in dispensing Justice

It is with great hope that we see the Sessions Court showing independence and fairness in dispensing justice,

    transgressor of the law

just when the High Courts and the so called Superior Courts have failed and disappointed us, countless times again and again. An indictment of the failure of the superior courts could not be more damning than a recent statement from the former Justice NH Chan in describing Augustine Paul as an obnoxious man who was not fit to be called a judge. In NH Chans mind, Augustine Paul was a transgressor of the law and thus violated the oath of his office.

The same should therefore be said of men like Musa Hassan, Gani Patail and now Abu Kassim for violating the oath of their offices. Enough ugly things have been said of Musa Hassan Mattress Carrier and Fixer, but nothing more damning than when he tried to sway the court against the witnesses who had spoken in favour of Dato Ramli during the Sabah case.

    The Sabah Case (Round 1)

Musa held the post of Bukit Aman prosecution/criminal law deputy assistant director in 1995 and Johor Chief Police Officer in 2003.

The IGP Musa Hassan made the biggest mistake when he appeared as the Prosecutions 75th witness in order to rebut all the other police directors who had given evidence earlier. In the end, Judge Supang Lian damned Musa Hassan in clear unequivocal terms when the Judge said that Musas evidence was incredible and not to be believed. Never before in the history of the legal annals has an IGP been damned with such words. In Japan, a four star general , which the IGP indeed has four stars on his shoulders, would commit harakri to save his honour. Do you know why Musa would not do? Its because he has none!

    Kuala Lumpur Case (Round 2)

AG Gani appealed but lost before High Court Judge Rahman Sebli. So in Sabah, Dato Ramli had won two acquittals- one before a Sessions Court Judge and another before a High Court Judge. The same thing happened before Judge M Gunalen, when Dato Seri Shafee Abdullah showed that many of the MACC witnesses had lied, especially the faggot DPP Kevin Morais. I have written extensively about this in my article The Liar Kevin Morais buried in his lies.

    Kuala Lumpur Case (Round 3)

Then yesterday, we have the pretty Judge SM Komathy also acquitting Dato Ramli. As explained by Dato Seri Shafee Abdullah, it is significant that in all the three cases, Dato Ramli was acquitted without his defence being called. It is significant because it means that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case. In laymans term it means that the prosecution had not shown there was a case. In street term! s, it me ans there was no case. It means the IGP, the MACC and the AG made up a case. It means they tried to fix Ramli but failed. Bad men plot but God disposes their conspiracies!

In mathematical terms, they tried to fix Dato Ramli three times for three different charges in three separate courts before three different judges but failed. In doing a headcount, it means that 3 senior Sessions Court Judges and 1 High Court Judge had found Dato Ramli innocent. Judge Supang Lian and Judge M Gunalen have since been elevated to the High Court. So that makes it three High Court Judges and 1 Sessions Court Judge i.e. a total of 4 Judges have found that Dato Ramli was innocent. Is that full vindication or what?

In mathematical terms, they tried to fix Dato Ramli three times for three different charges in three separate courts before three different judges but failed.

The AG will likely Against Judge Komathys Acquittal

So, will the AG appeal this one? Well, we wont be surprised. It is easy to imagine that the AG Gani is now enraged with Dato Ramlis third acquittal. AG Gani must be fuming mad as RPK is presently exposing that the AG Gani had blocked Dato Ramlis investigations into the crooks of the underworld and of the corporate world. RPK had exposed why Dato Ramli faced all these trumped up charges in his article The Ramli Yusuff Story the real reason why he was brought down.

It would be no surprise if an appeal is made as they need to divert and tire Dato Ramli down from tracking that the IGP, the MACC and the AG had conspired in the following:

    1. In the Sabah case, ASP Chew Kam Soon of the Police and Superintendant Sok One a/l Esen of the MACC had fabricated evidence to make it appear that a village headman had named Dato Ra! mli in a report. They fabricated facts about disturbance to villagers, but instead charged Dato Ramli for unauthorized use of a police Cessna. They concealed the fact that Dato Ramli was in full uniform conducting an aerial survey of weakspots in the coastal line of Sabah. Because of that Judge Supang Lian and Judge Rahman Sebli acquitted Dato Ramli;

    2. In the KL case (Round 2), IGP Musa Hassan detained an underworld operator Moo Sai Chin under the Emergency Ordinance and forced this criminal to agree to implicate Dato Ramli. For doing that he was then released not only from detention but also from Restricted Residence. That was why the MACC needed four cover reports to camouflage their tracks. The MACC faggot DPP Kevin Morais then lied throughout his court testimony. Judge M Gunalen saw through all this and thus acquitted Dato Ramli without calling for his defence;

    3. In the Summons case before Judge Komathy, the MACC cut and paste provisions of the Reg. 5 of the General Orders to make out an offence under Section. 168 of the Penal Code i.e. that Dato Ramli was engaged in trading without permission. The problem was: i) Dato Ramli did have approval to form a company as admitted by Dato Robiah and then IGP Tan Sri Bakri Omar ; ii) the company was still dormant as admitted by the Investigating Officer (IO) and the Company Secretary; iii) a dormant company could not be said to be trading as was admitted again by the IO and the Company Secretary.

The Mystery: What happened Tan Sri Bakris Letter of Approval?

What remains unanswered is did Musa Hassan destroy or caused to disappear Tan Sri Bakris signed

    ]

The suicide note in Chinese reads: 'Mom, I am sorry that I could not be with you anymore. Please give my liver to father after I die.' [Modern Express

letter of approval from Dato R! amlis se rvice record? If he did not, where is that signed letter of approval? It could not just vanish into thin air? Was that why the Prosecution refused to call Tan Sri Bakri and Dato Robiah to be witnesses. But then again, Musa is not known as the Mattress Carrier for nothing. In Sodomy I and the Black Eye incident, he was shown to be an expert in making evidence appear or disappear. Just like how the AG now conjures the suicide note from Teoh Beng Hocks rug sack.?

The Case against Lawyer Rosli Dahlan is absurd

So we now have it, that the three charges were clearly trumped up charges. Todays verdict was very significant because it raises our hope that Truth and Justice will prevail eventually. I said that yesterday in an article which I dedicated to Rosli Dahlan to celebrate his birthday. So Fridays acquittal of his friend, his client, his buddy is the perfect birthday and Ramadan gift for Rosli. And like a true loyal friend, Rosli was in court listening attentively to Judge Komathys verdict.

A true loyal friend, Rosli was in court listening attentively to Judge Komathys verdict.

In reciprocation of true friendship and ikhwan, I overheard Dato Ramli saying to DPP Ahmad Bache that

No wonder Dr Pornthip asked if Razak was a lawyer (implying he was a red-nosed clown!). Having now read how fat badut Razak could ask Dr Pornthip if she had any experience jumping off a building, I now realize why the whole MACC is the biggest joke of the Abdullah Badawi legacy.

Ahmad should recommend the withdrawal of the case against his friend, Lawyer Rosli Dahlan. I overheard Dato Ramli rationalizing that since he (Ram! li) have been acquitted, how could Rosli be abetting a non-crime? The MACCs case against Rosli is as ridiculous as the MACC Director of Prosecution suggesting that Teoh Beng Hock died of self-strangulation!

Public Sympathy and Support for Rosli

I want Rosli Dahlan to know that he is not alone.

When I saw Rosli in court yesterday, I took the opportunity on behalf of all of us to personally wish him a Happy Birthday. I told him that he should purge from his mind that the cause he is fighting for is a hopeless cause. I told him not to despair. I told him not to be sad. I told him not to think of quitting his practice. I told him that my article yesterday on Dato Ramli and Lawyer Rosli Dahlan hit 92nd spot in the WordPress Top 100. I told him that Malaysians are behind him in this fight for truth and justice. I hope he will read my article and realize that I am telling him about what the average Malaysians feel about the whole affair. I want him to know that he is not alone.

Rosli must not feel alone just because Dato Ramli has been acquitted of all the charges whereas his case is still hanging over his head like the sword of Damocles. Rosli must know that people support him just as he was surprised to see that even his senior partner, Dato DP Naban, came to court today to lend support. It shows that his partners cared. It shows that Malaysians cared. It shows that we all share the same ideals, vision and hope.

I also wanted him to know that YB Salahudin Ayub who sits in the MACC Special Committee on Corruption has been in trying to be in! touch w ith his office to get more information of the cover up in the MAS case that led to him and Dato Ramli to be charged. I hope Rosli will not use clients confidentiality to avoid helping the good MP who is doing what the MACC had refused to do. I also now want to use this opportunity to ask YB Salahuddin Ayub to use his position in the MACC Special Committee to summon Rosli and Dato Ramli to appear before the Special Committee to testify what they know of the collusion between AG, the IGP and the MACC to release that underworld criminal Tengku Goh and corporate figure Tajuddin Ramli.

Gaji buta for some, durian runtuh for others. Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the MAS advisor, should start cracking on the lop-sided monopoly contracts which are against MAS' greater interest. He can start with the LSG Sky Chefs-Brahim's Sdn Bhd catering contract with the national carrier. In three months, the Sdn Bhd did slightly more than RM50 million worth of business with MAS. Oh, by the way, the Brahim in the Sdn Bhd is Ibrahim Badawi, brother of the MAS adviser.

Malaysians must join me and we must stand together to demand that the MACC Special Committee do that. Our voice together as Suara Rakyat is Suara Keramat. Let us use our Suara Keramat to denounce these abuses of power. Let us use our Suara Keramat to drive obnoxious men like Gani Patail and Musa Hassan from their office. As for MACCs Abu Kassim, he had made a public pledge to resign if any report is not investigated. His public pledge is his sumpah. Like the ancient Malays saying biar dia dimakan sumpah! Let them know that we the Rakyat will not acquit them so easily!
